3. RESEARCH
Researching films such as ‘Drive’ or ‘Nightcrawler’ that
had the same aesthetic as what I wanted to recreate in
my video. This helped because it gave me more
inspiration and an idea where to go when colour
correcting in post.
I could have improved by digging into the deeper
meaning of the song. Instead I opted to take it at face
value to make visuals for the video easier to come up
with and easier to shoot.
The song itself features in the film Drive and worked
well, so the idea was to try and replicate the same
aesthetic, but taking the story in the song and turning
that into a sort of short film/music video.
I think I could have done more research into filming
techniques when filming on your own as it could have
been useful and given me ideas and techniques to
4. PLANNING
Planning helped because it provided me with a solid
foundation to build upon.
While not entirely the same (shot to shot), my planning still
gave me the premise and most shots in the video thought of
ahead of time, giving me more time to be creative, always
having the planning to fall back on if anything didn’t go as
intended.
Perhaps I could have included more visual planning to make
the tone come across clearer.
I also could have done more research into locations which
could have saved time when deciding where to film.
Also in the planning I said I’d have help to make it, I didn’t, I
did it all by myself which definitely made it harder and did
limit some shots I could do. If I were to redo it with
somebody helping it’d be a lot easier I think.
5. TIME MANAGEMENT
I think I could have handled my time better, however if I
had more time I think the video could be a lot better.
Obviously there is plenty of things that could make it
better, but its all about making do with what you have
available and with that criteria I got the job done.
If I had more time to make this I’d definitely film a lot
more footage even if I didn’t use it. The video was always
intended to be short, but giving myself more options in
the edit would have been nice.
Also originally planned to film it with my sister, but the
timing didn’t work out, so plan in advance with her to
find a time when we were both free to shoot footage
because having to do it on my own did limit what footage
I could shoot. Leading me to have to compromise/scrap
shot ideas I had originally.
6. TECHNICAL QUALITIES -
CAMERA
Blue/Late Night Colour Scheme
Person hidden in darkness/not
shown
Bokeh effect for the lights in the
background.
I tried to replicate the dark/blue colour
scheme in my video using the Day4Nite
colour correction option on premier with
a few small tweaks of my own, I couldn’t
get it perfect, but I like the way this shot
turned out.
7. TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
EDITING/POST
I tried to use intercutting in my video as it was an efficient
way to get everything across without the story being
necessarily linear.
I slowed down the footage at the start so the ‘bzz’ of the
phone line would sync with the person putting the phone
to their ear, also to create a vibe along with the colours and
lighting that something bad had happened before this
video started, then you start to find out what as the video
goes on.
I also used basic edits like cutting on the beat, between a
black screen and then back to the footage, the reason I did
this was to kind of separate the black and white shots from
the colour shots, besides from when they are swiftly
intercut with one another.
8. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
I’m quite happy with the way it looks visually considering I shot it all
by myself.
I used a 2:35:1 aspect ratio to give it a more cinematic feel rather
than a full screen music video/tv show feel.
I’m really happy with the way the scenes shot in the studio turned
out with the specific lighting, those scenes were also easier to colour
correct in premier.
The way the blue colour correction turned out I’m happy with, but I
think if I had time to re-edit it, I’d find a way to colour correct all the
scenes the same so I didn’t have to use black and white, although I
do like the difference in colour for the scenes that sort of flashback.
9. AUDIENCE APPEAL
I didn’t really have a specific target audience in mind
when making it, but I imagine it would appeal to
teenagers/young adults, with the general vibe the video
gives off.
11. FEEDBACK 1
What did you like about the product?
The blue colour scheme.
The cutting back and forth between footage.
The way you cut to the knife which implies something
bad happened.
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
Could have been longer maybe.
Less use of repetition with some of the footage.
More consistent colour scheme throughout the video.
12. FEEDBACK 2
What did you like about the product?
Likes the title card and colour of sky.
Likes the swipe of the camera when opening the box.
The use of the blue colours.
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
Consistent colours throughout.
Less repeating of the footage.
13. PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I agree with the lack of consistent colours throughout although I do
like the black and white I think having one colour scheme would have
been better.
I also agree with the less repetition improvement
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
That it could have been longer, whether it was long or short wasn’t
really important to me, I’d rather it be shorter and concise rather than
long and bloated.
I liked the blue colour scheme I went for but I think with more time
I’d probably find a better colour scheme and match it throughout the
entire video.
14. PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
I would find a more consistent colour scheme throughout the
entire video.
I’d also try to use less repetitive footage throughout the video.
