2. Idea : Football Podcast /
documentary
(Debate over) Who is the greatest ……. In ……. History
Striker : Centre back :
Transfer : Team : Manager :
youngster
Premier League : Champions league :
World Football : Lower league
I like this idea as its not as restricting as an interview where the questions are scripted and its harder to go
off track and open up proper conversation. It would be easier to bounce ideas off one another and create a
more open and easier to digest piece of media. Especially this one question can allow for more and more
branches of conversation to open up when you discuss and try to work out who is the greatest. Just talking
about the greatest striker could become the greatest goal scorer, number 9, current or generational. It also
allows conversation In how you decide who is the best. Amount of goals, the infamous goals, international
and league status or their age and how long they were able to stay in the top leagues for while still
performing.
3. Interview Practice :
I enjoyed conducting the interview, trying to move it along and being able to
host and control the tempo I liked, although it need improvement its
something I enjoyed and would like to reciprocate with a more open topic.
I think the flow was good, it felt natural most of the way.
We managed to be able to drag a small set of questions
out for some time.
I think it was somewhat interesting.
I felt only having one topic was quite restricting and made it hard to make a
natural conversation.
If you have no interest in OW I feel like it would be boring.
Audio quality and editing, if I had more time id like to have down more to make
it more diegetic.
I think more preparation and having more of a script rather
than just questions would be useful.
You don’t need to restart when you mess up once as you can
just edit in post.
Have a wider topic as it will help it run more smoothly and
let the interviewee have a look at the questions so there
isn’t long pauses, umms and errs.
Being interviewed was certainly stressful as while your focusing on the answers your giving and making it so there not dull and
just yes or no’s, you are also trying to focus on not pausing and stalling too often as that could potentially ruin their recording.
However it was useful as it gives you more thought into how you could better prepare your interviewee for a recording; let them
read the questions before, talk to them before hand and let them warm up.
For my interview I interviewed Millie Smith on her interest in Overwatch
4. Identify Experiments
For my experiments I'm going to create and a send a survey into teams about
football and what they'd prefer, this will help me explore my audience and be
able to narrow down my plan even further.
Another experiment I want to do is practicing shots and using two camera to get
different angles and piecing it together to make it look clean and not stop starty.
I might try this at home using my little sister or maybe
Lego figures and just use two different phones to practice.
Another part of this experiment will be practicing with using
lighting the same way they do in documentaries.
5. Audience Research
My Audience wont be very niche as football is one of the most popular sports in
the world however I have a chance to capture slightly more niche audiences
from which subcategory I use. If I make it about the greatest premier league or
English player then hypothetically we could gather a larger English audience as
they might be able to take more and grasp a greater interest from the series. The
same goes for if I base it on players performances in the champions league, this
could attract a more European audience as players from their clubs or smaller
leagues being talked about could capture their attention to the series.
6. Topic Research
I’ve looked at a large range of different football documentary's and series, most of which feature different focal points.
None of which has covered the topic I am wanting to base mine around, a majority focus solely on a single player or a
single league.
My main topic is based around Footballers careers and mainly just the highlights or small areas of the best of the best,
researching this will mostly come once I have spoke to my interviewees and learnt about who they are going to suggest
/ choose as their placement. .
I’ll focus the research on specific areas; age, team, goals, influence
STATS PAGE
Most of my topic research will come from sites like the one I have linked. They supple extensive detail and quantity
of different statistic for an incredible index or players both past and present
7. Existing Product 1
All or Nothing Amazon Docuseries
The All or Nothing series is a
docuseries based within a
sports club ( I will be
focusing on the football
clubs) and it follows the
everyday inner workings and
behind the scenes and
management of the teams
throughout the season.
Amazon have released two,
one on Manchester city and
the other on Tottenham
Hotspurs.
8. AUDIENCE
The wider Audience is more than likely projected to be males
between 16 and 50. Football has a predominately male
audience and the fact it is a digital series means the older
generation may not have easy access to be able to watch it as
you need some form on internet connection and amazon
account. The more nice audience targeting would be towards
Tottenham, Manchester City and general Premier league/
football fans. Seeing as the two series are based alongside
those two clubs during different season campaigns. This
means its quite easy to target this audience as it will captivate
their interests.
I don’t think any demographic in particular has been directly
targeted, but I think the most likely to watch/ be able to watch
it is anything on the D+ as it requires a paid subscription to
view.
9. Production methods
The Filming uses a lot of handheld shots mixed
in with plenty of stationary shots. The handheld
shots are mainly when your up close and
personal with the players and coaches whereas
the stationary/tripod shots are positioned
slightly further or from within the building
compound.
The lighting is very natural as its set within the
training ground, stadiums and dressing rooms
and not a studio.
The main edit within the series is just narration over the video,
whether this is the players coaches or a narrator. Its cut very clean
and most shots are long shots of the same thing rather than cutting
to different views and angles like a tv show or movie.
10. Tone and Style
A majority of the time the docuseries is very light hearted and of a light tone as most of the content is the players
training or having a laugh, however it can switch to a more serious tone when it wants to indicate that its at a more
crucial point of the campaign or if there has been an upset in the game or a big injury.
When they want to make the series seem more serious
and ‘darker’ they use shadows In the lighting, they use
footage with everyone looking concerned and glum,
mostly head down and seem to focus in on the people
who are isolated from the groups and by themselves
12. Existing Product 2
FIFA Classic Players series
The FIFA classic player series
is a short film series which
narrows in on single players
throughout history, primarily
focusing on the greatest
players throughout the
years, like Cruyff, Garrincha
and Pele
13. AUDIENCE
The target audience for this mini web series would clearly be football fans,
however with the older players and more vintage clips I would assume
they were either hoping to introduce newer fans into these classic players
or hoping to spark a feel of nostalgia into maybe slightly older fans.
Another part of the audience could be set club fans. For players like
Johan Cruyff and Bobby Moore, who were instrumental players to
their country and especially one major club each ( Barcelona and
West Ham respectively). A potential audience could be fans of those
clubs that these huge names represented or even nations.
From looking at the comments you can see the audience they’ve
brought in for players like Puskas is multi national. It also shows the
older population as they are happy because “Now the younger
generation will know who he is”.
14. Production methods
The start of each episode has the player
isolated on screen mid game, it then cuts to a
freeze frame to put the title episode and series
title next to them. For the whole of this they have
a yellowish tint overlay to give of the aged
footage feel.
The footage is accompanied by narration
describing the games or the tournaments and
how large it is for/within the players career and
what it led to.
All the footage in the series is purely clips and footage from old world
cup games as it talks about the players international careers. It
shows highlights for the players as well as challenges they may have
to overcome ( conceding a goal or injury). Its more or less a montage
reel based on the players tournaments.
15. Tone and Style
It is quite a short quick cut series which purely focuses on delivery the information across about each player its
reviewing.
I like the style of having a narration over mainly
stock/archive footage of the player in question playing. I
want to incorporate this into my work but not have it as
the main things as FIFA CLASSIC PLAYER does.
16. Genre
I don’t think its possible to narrow it to a specific genre
other than maybe a docuseries/documentary type mini web
series
17. Existing Product 3 Pelé : Netflix Documentary
The documentary focuses on Pelé life in and out
of football. Unlike most media on Pelé which
focuses in on his playing career and whether he
really is the greatest of all time, this focuses on
his life growing up, his numerous affairs and his
relationship with the authoritarian government
who controlled brasil during his playing career
18. AUDIENCE
Although he’s a player from almost 50 years ago he’s one of the
biggest names in football. The audience it would be able to
attract would consist of a wide range of football fans and the
Brazilian audience it could pull in would be massive as Pele is
renowned almost as a god amongst them.
However the addition of talking about Brazil's political
State at the time and Pele’s involvement will appeal to a
Much more niche audience compared to just talking
About Peles playing career.
19. Production methods
Most of the shots in the Documentary are either
a close up shot of an interview with Pele ( the
interview seems to portray Pele as this weak
and frail old man which is quite contradicting
when talking about his affairs and playing
career).
Most of the narration is Pele talking, however its
dubbed by an English narrator as he speaks
Portuguese and Netflix's domain audience is
predominantly western so English is the main
language they would understand.
There are multiple other archive clips of Peles playing career, this of
the goals he scored and the major tournaments he played in. The way
this is set out is quite similar to FIFA CLASSIC PLAYERs layout with the
montage and narration.
The documentary also
uses a lot of graphics for
Scores, games and dates.
20. Tone and Style
The majority of the documentary it feels quite formal and more like a structured interview with Pele and his peers
about his career and lifestyle.
There is certain parts of the film were they seem to try
and force a more informal feel by making it seem like a
jokey conversation with friends, however with.
A lot of the set design feels like its been done and
they’ve used these places to give it a more personal feel,
especially the shots of his family house with the Pele
memorabilia on the wall.
