3. The strengths of my research I thought were that I selected the right
type of information relating to what I was going to be working on. In
doing that I ended up getting some helpful information. This then
helped me shape my final designs and story line of my short film.
Another strength is that I paid attention to the important factors of my
research so I got down to what I needed when making my short film.
When it comes to weaknesses I would say that for my survey monkey I
could have done with more than 21 people answering it so I could get a
wider range of peoples information. Another one would be maybe
getting some more in depth knowledge on what makes the best selling
horrors the best. How I would improve these both is asking people to
complete my survey outside of college giving a wider rage of peoples
opinions. Then the other research I could've done was maybe go into a
few certain films and researched them more in depth.
4. My strengths of my planning I think were how I quickly thought of an
idea and then began to again quickly advance my story. I think that
what made my planning went so well is that I changed things
throughout which then made my end product look way better then
would've if I didn’t change my original thoughts of my story. When I did
all my planning I made sure that my story will make sense and that it
has an understandable story so its easy to follow. My weaknesses I
would say are that I could've taken some more thought into my
aesthetics when planning so I wouldn't have had to make some panicky
changes later on. Another weakness would be that I needed to put more
thought into my sounds effects because in my film I would say that’s a
main weak point. This would then I think effect my product in a good
way and that it would be a big improvement.
5. With my time management I think handled it all very well and I
managed to get all my work done before the day it needed to be handed
in by. When I was given the task I made sure that got on with the work
straight away so later on when filming I had more time if I needed to
change the production and then to finish editing in plenty of time. If I
had more time to produce my work then I could put a lot more effort
into my thought process and that should hopefully help improve my
short film.
6. When shooting my short film I had to work in low light so in most shots I
had to keep changing the contrast on the camera to help get the best shot
possible. Also whilst shooting I ended adding some panning shots to help
add some diversity in my short film and help give it the effect I needed.
When comparing my camera qualities I would compare them with the short
films I watched at the start of the rotation. After watching the ones that
were horror based that gave me some really good idea on hoe I would
possibly make mine. After dealing with the contrasts all the filming when
very well and I wanted to shoot a very neutral shot throughout so then I
could play around with my editing later on. The only thing that went wrong
was I got a few bits of grainy footage but after changing a few things it all
came out a lot better.
7. when doing my audio for the short film I put a lot of thought in what music I was
going to adding into it. I obviously had scaring music which helps set a mood of a
film very well. But I added so e more dramatic music to get across the feeling of
panic and tension that I hope draws people in to concentrate more. This I feel also
helps people figure out that it’s a high intensity and panic part of the film. Also I
added in some sound effects, and one of the sound effects is floor boards creaking
and for me I thought that would be a good noise for a certain bit in my film. When
comparing these technical qualities with other examples I feel that all horror
films will have these elements in to do exactly what I tried to do with is make it
spooky and scary.
8. When it came down to editing I first of all knew I was going to use ad fade in and
out of the music and sounds effect. I did that because it gives the film more of a
professional sound to it and it just makes the film better because the music doesn't
suddenly cut off and disappear. Then I added a shading filter to the rest of my
actually footage and I did this because it gave my film more of a rustique look to it
and made it seem more of a film then some terrible un edited footage. The hole
effect let me play around with it to help me get the correct look I needed. Again I
feel like every new film that comes out will in some way use these technical
qualities.
9. I personally think a lot of my film looks
very good for a horror genre. For my
final edit I obviously kept to the dark
lighting of the horror stereo type and it
made my final edit look so much better.
I found that my work was very creative
by me using the surroundings of where
I was filming to my advantage and
making my film look good.
My strengths of my aesthetic qualities I
think are that I used the surroundings
and where I was filming to my advantage
so then I wouldn't have to add any effects
that would've ruined the whole style I
was going for. My weaknesses I think
might be some of the angles and
techniques I used didn't work as well as I
thought and probably don’t look in place
to other people. For next time I feel that I
will have to shoot a certain scene with
more then one technique and see which
one works better.
10. I personally think my short film has a few features that I made sure were in that
my film that I learnt from my research. Such as jump scares and intense music.
These two features I would say are very key for horror and I added both of them.
Another one I feel like I added was music to help covey some tension during the
film. In a horror tension is a must have, and it helps build up for jump scares. The
reason I knew how to add these in because of my research and having a good
knowledge on horror films that I have watch.
12. What did you like about the product?
I liked the story you went with, because it fits the criteria well, and
there was no need for any dialog, to understand what was going on.
Also the lighting of the film fit the genre and tone very well. And
the music and sound effects fit perfectly.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
The only problem I have with the film is the volume, its fine for the
majority of the film but at the end it gets a bit too load. But apart
from that everything was good.
13. What did you like about the product?
I liked how it al made clear sense with little dialogue as I think
that is hard to do, as well as that I thought the sound effects were
really effective in creating a tense atmosphere, this atmosphere
was also outlined by the good use of the creepy music, I also liked
the storyline in general as it was original.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
You could have made it a bit shorter to fit the brief.
14. What did you like about the product?
The pace of the film
The use of visual storytelling
Point of view shots
The appearance of the antagonist and the shock effect
What improvements could have been made to the product?
A few more POVs
Some shots between entering the house and finding the victim
15. What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
Peer 1. I do agree with what my first peer said. That I did end
up missing out the dialog and that I thought my music did fit
well and the tone.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
I disagree with the volume part because I tried to make it
jump scary but I can understand because they probably didn't
realise.
16. Peer 2. I do agree with what my peer has said here and that all his
feed back is exactly what I hoped to expect. I do agree that it needs to
fit the brief because its way over the actual time needed.
I don’t really disagree with anything this peer has commented.
Peer 3. again I completely agree with everything my peer was saying.
On the things to improve on I agree that I could add some more POV
shots because it makes the feel of the film more intense and this can
then further my film. But again it was quite hard to fit more in on the
tike scale of how long my film needed to be. Finally I agree with that I
could have added and taken away some shots to then show how I
found the victim laying there.
