2. Idea Generation
• Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
• Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles, techniques
and conventions that we have looked at in previous sessions. Explore
how you could interpret the song differently using different methods
• You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images, mind maps,
etc
• For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate these
3. Idea one- AJR Burn the house down
• Styles
I believe the style used would be a narrative style since it’s trying to give a
message and the video is trying to help provide that.
• Techniques
Effects used in the video would be the smoke and lighting used as some clips
wouldn’t normally have enough to help represent what’s happening in that
scene. Also near the end of the video they used lighting to make it look like
fire was in front of them. The camera angle of focusing on them give the scene
more tension from moving around since you can’t see what’s in front of them
until the camera switches to that person.
• Conventions
The lyrics could mean a few things but the main thing that hit me would be a
person who was relaxed and didn’t care about their surroundings but then it
hits them and they flip out.
4. Idea two- Imagine Dragons Believer
• Styles
I think the songs using a narrative style to show the meaning to the viewer and
help portray the message they’re saying.
• Techniques
A technique that the video uses would be the how they video cuts to the beat
and most motions which gives the music more emotion since it’s effecting
what’s happening in the scenes. Also the effects used in the video gives parts
the illusion of a large stage that’s been set. With use of smoke and digital
backdrops. Additionally, the camera angles and movement flow with the fight
that’s happening in the video making it seem more intense then it probably
was. Finally, they used Chroma key to allow them to place the characters
inside the digital ring they had created.
• Conventions
Meaning behind the song could be a variety of things but I think it’s about
believing in yourself and not letting anyone bring you down if you’re fighting
your hardest.
5. Idea three- Imagine Dragons Natural
• Styles
They use a surrealist style since there are many things In the video
which are impossible to do in real life but it also has a narrative behind
the video
• Techniques
Effects used in the video would be the different smoke used to make it
look like people were turning to dust. Additionally, the lighting used to
make the house seem more spooky. The camera angles used in the
video gives it more emotion for example there's an angle of inside the
grave with a POV shot of hands trying to get out.
• Conventions
The message I receive from the video is that if you’re a natural at what
you do then you’ve got a gift to surpass others and live on doing that
7. Final idea – artist/title/info
• Believer/ imagine Dragons
• Imagine dragons emerged from las Vegas to become one of the
worlds top bands. They started as alternative rock but then decided
to mix pop, rock and electronic music.
8. Final idea – track summary
• The meaning behind the song is to be able to continue even if you
think it’s a losing battle and to keep fighting until you’ve won. The
content in the video shows that with enough determination many
things become possible. The duration of the song is 3 minutes but it
still keeps the pace up and has different meaning sin each verse. As
well they keep the style the same whilst progressing through
different parts of the song.
9. Final idea – your idea
• The video I plan to create would be one with a similar style whilst
keeping the narrative of the original video. From this I might use a
different type of fight like a sword fight or fighting that isn’t boxing.
Additionally, I would want to keep the peaceful parts of the song in
calm locations which means I would have to find a quite place to
complete those parts.
10. Final idea – techniques and styles
• Techniques I plan to use would be different lighting to change the
atmosphere, the use of a green screen to place my characters in a
digitally designed location, also using different camera angles to
follow the fight and camera movements to make the fight seem fast
than it actually is. The style would be narrative to match the song but
to implement that into my video would be difficult so would have to
create certain moments the view could recognize.
11. Summary
• 5 strengths of your ideas you could use
• A strength of of my ideas would be the idea of cutting the video with the music to
help intensify a simple fight
• Another strength would the idea of making things more surreal to help put the songs
message into motion
• My third strength would be to use different effects to change the surrounding and
make it look more realistic instead of a standard set
• My fourth strength would be the use of effects to destroy or rebuild something like a
wall or building.
• My final strength would be to use the music to help produce my video and keep the
flow going
• 5 weaknesses of you ideas
• A weakness of my ideas would be how I would create something so complex with no
training
• Another would be if I have the props needed for the production of the video
• Thirdly do I have the room for any complex green screen scenes
• Fourthly if I have enough actors to be able to do a good shoot
• Finally if I have the room to do large effects and if I have the software to complete
this
12. Potential research targets
• I will need to research how to create different effects and the
programs needed for them.
• I will need to look for resources like actors and props for them to use.
• I will also need to look at the locations I have on offer to me and find
out if they’re large enough for use or if I must find my own locaton of
too small.
Editor's Notes
What techniques, resources, locations, etc will you need to research?
