The document provides guidance for stage 2 of a music video production project which involves research and experiments. It instructs the reader to research potential production techniques, look at a minimum of 3 related products, and collect samples that could help with their own video. The reader is also asked to assess whether techniques could be used or adapted. The document then provides examples of 3 music video products for analysis and inspiration. It asks the reader to consider genre conventions and the characteristics of their chosen artist. The reader provides their chosen approach and justifies their choice. Finally, the document prompts the reader to evidence camera/editing/audio experiments and reflect on what elements they will include in their final product.
2. Production techniques research
ā¢ Research potential production techniques you might want to use or
feel would be most appropriate ā these can be related to camera,
editing, story, sound, etc
ā¢ You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your research.
ā¢ You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might
help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also ask
potential target audience what they think.
ā¢ You may need to add extra slides!
ā¢ With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or
how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it
completely
ā¢ Always think about your investigations links to your intentions and
production!
3. Product 1
This product is a bit like the style I'll be incorporating in my music video. I will be using a
technique in which I use a stabilized camera and have people cloned more that once and
also just standard stop motion. Ill try to keep the camera moving straight. The kit I would
need to create an effect like this could be any sort of camera but then I would edit it in
photoshop and use the skills I learned when doing animation for video games like the irn
bru advergame I made.
I would include this effect as it is very interesting to look at and this means it would then
make it entertaining for the audience which is the whole point.
There is many locations I could film this at, but preferably, I would have to find a space in
which there is an elevated climbing frame or tree where I could film straight down to
create the illusion that you'd be standing up when in reality you are laying fat on the
ground.
4. Product 2
This style of video with the abstract colours and symmetrical shot is what ill be using as
inspiration when making the music video. It has many random scenes but it keeps up with the
abstract colours. If I were to film like this id use an open space whether that be a set like in
the video or some sort of field in a naturistic environment. I would use the blocks that are
shown in the video or something like it. Maybe like a roll of paper suspended behind people if
I were to. I could still make it without people but it would not have the same effect s the band
members are playing instruments that are playing the song. Although I could just incorporate
a main singer and have them playing the guitar and walking around different naturistic
locations because in the video the singer is the only one in the band that does this, the rest
stay in one place playing their instrument throughout the different scenes.
5. Product 3
ā¢ This music video contains a lot of random shots that play with lighting which if
incorporated in my video would provide a cool looking atmosphere for the
audience to be enticed by. The process of incorporating lights this big would be
quite costly if I were to buy them. So to adapt this into my own video I would
probably use lamps and other light sources that I can move around. If in were to
do this I would have to get a long extension cord and some sort of set. I could
also film it outside in the dark as that lighting would look appealing to the
audience and also focus the audience attention on here I would want them to
look.
6. Genre and artist breakdown
ā¢ Think about the conventions of music video and which of these you
feel are the most appropriate for you video and why
ā¢ Think about the genre characteristics for your chosen artist ā how do
you plan to employ these?
ā¢ Which techniques and styles do you think fans of your chosen genre
prefer? What should you expect to see in that type of music video?
ā¢ Use the following slides to show your ideas and explain these using
good illustrative examples ā this is where your research and
explorations should start. Remember to consider the aspects we
looked at in class [and the academic things from Goodwin, etc].
7. Conventions
The conventions for an indie rock video include a diverse but specific
colour scheme and shade, for example in the 'what you know' video by
two door cinema club they use a very watered down colour and
specific colour placement as the set is block white. This sort of watered
down colour is a common occurrence in indie rock videos, it seems
that the edgy audience of indie rock has adopted this and its heavily
associated with this style of music.
Another thing that is associated with indie rock and its audience is
their choice of clothing, this is crucial when making a video because
8. Genre Characteristics
Much like āAlternative Rockā in the 90s and āCollege Rockā in the 80s, āIndie Rockā
typically describes a style of music that doesnāt quite fit a typical, traditional definition
of simply āRock.ā And, just like the two previous versions I mentioned, it started as a
label describing music that wasnāt quite fit for radio , but rose in popularity to the point
that itās actually become mainstream, or close to it. Indie rock is basically that, now.
You could go so far as to break down āindie rockā into around 12 sub-genres now, as
the term is used to describe many bands who donāt sound like each other.
I chose this sort of genre because I thought I could make the video look very stylish and
retro like many other indie rock music videos.
9. Chosen approach/justification
My chosen approach to the video will have an 80s/90s vhs tape style. I
will be using a lot of inspiration from alternative and indie rock music
videos. I want to do this as I believe I could make it look like a real
video that you would get from band in the indie rock scene. Although
my video may differ from Vampire Weekends official video of A-punk
which was a sped up, one shot video of the four members playing
instruments. Whereas mine may include a lot more of a naturistic
environment and scenery. There probably will not be any use of
instruments and the video will be more focused on the editing that is
in time with the song and the setting. I'll probably also locate the video
around York as it is easy to access and provides everything I am
planning to include in my video.
10. Experiments
Camera/Editing/Audio Experiments
This is for you to evidence the filming and editing tests we did.
Be prepared to add extra slides.
You can add more experiments as you do them as the project progresses.

12. Reflection
ā¢ What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
ā¢ In my final product I will be using the old vhs style filter over the
whole video which will convey a retro feeling. Although in did not
edit the video I. I will also use a another tint which will make the
video much more grainy to add to the aesthetics of a vhs tape. Also I
will incorporate the tempo of the video as this makes for more of an
old fashioned/retro look.
14. Reflection
ā¢ What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product? What about this process has been notable [positive and
negative]?
