2. Idea Generation
• Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
• Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles, techniques
and conventions that we have looked at in previous sessions. Explore
how you could interpret the song differently using different methods
• You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images, mind maps,
etc
• For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate these
4. Idea one
• Stand in front of a green screen to remove the background in post
• Maybe put making the video itself as part of an intro/outro for the
video.
• Lip sync the lyrics so the video looks like the actor is singing
• Do the shoot in multiple different outfits but same hairstyle and
everything else the same.
• Some with sunglasses. Dressed in a suit
• Then get some shots in a dark room with lights a fair distance behind
• Edit some of the video into a picture frame/TV/similar, which will
slowly be zooming out
• Rap/Hip Hop track such as Eminem – Lucky You, Vic Mensa – U mad
5. Idea two
• Another idea for a song could be something based around following a
couple on a date.
• Going out for a coffee in a café, blurred background.
• Blurry TV screen just above their heads on a wall
• Sit drinking. Laughing. Talking but with none of the noise in the track
• Walking around outside in a built up area
• Song could be Ed Sheeran – Perfect (or similar sort of song style)
6. Idea three
• A group of friends sat around a campfire, playing games and talking
• A couple of people sat playing guitars and everyone singing along
• Some close ups of the individuals singing/playing guitars etc
• Song example: Knockin' on heavens door – Bob Dylan
8. Summary
• 5 strengths of your ideas you could use
• My ideas are strong and could make strong music videos if given enough
thought and with the right actors and all that sort of stuff
• My ideas all fit a similar style to the videos that are currently in use
by musicians
• The first idea can show off and test my Premiere and After Effects ability
• The third idea could allow for a lot of extra b-roll
• They all can be manipulated to demonstrate sound understanding of editing
programs
• 5 weaknesses of you ideas
• I think my ideas require a lot more work than we have class time
• My videos will require lots of work and equipment to make happen, ie
renting café's and similar.
• If filmed and edited poorly there's a high chance the videos could be
absolutely trash
• The first idea may require complex work done to create an aesthetically
pleasing background
• The third idea doesn't have much of a similarity with other rock music videos
9. Final idea – artist/title/info
• Eminem – Lucky You
• Marshall Bruce Mathers III, known professionally as Eminem, is an
American rapper, songwriter, record producer, record executive, film
producer, and actor. Eminem was born on October 17, 1972, in
St. Joseph, Missouri.
• MGK, 50 Cent, Drake, Kanye West, Snoop Dogg.
• Hip Hop. Hip hop or hip-hop, is a culture and art movement that
began in the Bronx in New York City during the late 1970s. The origins
of the word are often disputed.
10. Final idea – track summary
• Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content, duration,
pace and style of the song]
• This song follows a theme running through Kamikaze in which
Eminem declares his dominance over the current, modern
generation of rappers. Marshall criticizes those in the modern rap
game who use ghost writers.
• very fast rap flow.
• 4:04
• The style is a very recognisable Eminem song
11. Final idea – your idea
• Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your interpretation,
use of imagery or narrative, genre conventions, etc]
• My idea is to get the actor in front of a green screen and use what's
going on in the background to link in with the song.
• The video will follow the conventions of hip hop music
by promoting the artist, not the song and by showing off wealth.
12. Final idea – techniques and styles
• Video techniques/style/conventions to be used [include how you
intend to implement these]
• Close ups – To show the words that are being sung
• Zoom shots – Zooming into a subject, in this case the subject
probably being a TV screen.
• Green screen – Will be used to remove backgrounds
• 3d motion tracking – To place objects inside/on other objects
• Editing multiple of the actor on the screen at the same point – This
will show the two artists in the original song.
• Style is going to be quite complex, and there is going to be a lot going
on in the background especially behind the green screen.
13. Summary
• 5 strengths of your idea
• If I think about the shots I'm getting the video could look really good
• I think my idea is unique and similar videos don't show up often
• Can demonstrate editing ability
• 5 weaknesses of you idea
• Requires lots of work in post
• Isn't too similar to the normal Eminem music videos or follow many of the
conventions of an Eminem video
• Without work going into making a background for the video it won't look
very good.
14. Potential research targets
• Lip syncing
• Chroma Key and effects that I can put behind it
• Adding layers into other layers (putting a video inside a picture frame
or TV etc)
• Changing the perspective of video layers

What techniques, resources, locations, etc will you need to research?
