3. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or donât like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos
employing styles, techniques and conventions
that we have looked at in previous sessions.
Explore how you could interpret the song
differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is
relevant, images, mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us
to generate these
4. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 â add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
Youâve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
5. RESEARCH- TRIPPIE REDD â
DARK KNIGHT DUMMO &
LOVE SCARS
⢠In love scars the editing and effects used in the video have more of a vibrant, colourful and
retro style, a large portion of the video uses a blur effect to give off that retro feel. There are
also many bright colour themed transitions and effects. I will be taking inspiration from this
and implementing my own blur effect into my music video in attempt to also maintain a retro
theme.
⢠In love scars there is a lot of low angle shots, this may be done to make the subject of the shot
come across as a powerful figure or someone who has high authority, I will also be using this in
my music video not to present someone or something as powerful but rather to get a large
variety of different camera angles in.
⢠In dark knight dummo the theme is way less colourful and maintains a theme of darkness
throughout the entire video, this goes well with the narrative of the video (zombies and
violence). I will be also be incorporating a theme of darkness into my music video, the
actual clips themselves will be fun and enjoyable to watch but they will be mostly shot at night
time.
⢠In the dark knight dummo video there is also some intertextuality, they seem to reference
wrong turn the horror movie franchise, I will also be doing this and referencing a horror movie
in the video.

POLES1469 & WISH
⢠POLES1469 is also a very colourful music video, it is fast paced and gives off an
energetic feel through the activities in the music video and also the editing techniques.
There is also some colourful art design In the video with the lightning in the
background and the smoke used. I will also be making my music video have a very
energetic feel, the editing will be fast paced to sync with the song and the activities in
the clips will be fun and energetic.
⢠In the music video Wish Trippie redd is wearing a lot of jewellery, this is a genre
convention of the hip hop/rap theme he presents in most of his songs, I will be
implementing my own genre conventions of the alternative/indie music genre into my
music video like close/extreme close up shots and the use of props.

7. POTENTIAL SONGS
List the songs you might want to do
-Title fight â Evander
-inaristakeover x kayudo - can't be saved!
-Title fight â Leaf
-Title fight- Anaconda sniper
-Trippie redd â Love scars
- La Moyo The Band - ΤĎÎΞξ
8. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES
Look at camera, editing and special effects (digital and
physical) techniques you could employ. Look at tutorials
online and on YouTube.
⢠In the video I am going to use a variety of different editing, camera work and special
effects. First of all I am going to add a VHS effect over all my clips, this will help give off
a retro old school theme that I'm aiming for and will also fit the audio nicely since the
song is an alternative/indie type old school song.
⢠Im also going to use a lot of different camera angles and camera techniques in the
video. I want too include a large variety of different camera angles and shot types to
maintain that fast paced fun energetic theme to the song. I will be using close ups,
extreme close ups, long shots, extreme long shots, closed frame, medium shots and
medium long shots and many others.
9. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO
USE
What are the conventions of your musical genre? How
could you use them?
⢠Underground melodic music videos tend to be quite low budget and old school,
the visuals are not very clear and sometimes intentionally made blurry to portray
a retro feel to the song, I will be using this exact genre convention in my music
video, I will add a blur and VHS visual effect to my music video to replicate an
indie music video as best as I can.
⢠The setting of most Underground melodic music videos is out in nature mainly in
parks, fields, forests and sometimes beaches. I'll be shooting most of my music
video in a grassy field and forest type area.
⢠The most used shot types in underground music seem to be medium shots and
low angle shots. Although I will be incorporating many other shot types in my
video I will be using the low angle and medium shots quite a lot to try and
replicate the indie genre as best as I can. The shot types I use will differ based n
different part of the song to try and sync the audio with the shot types and
zooms.

Editing will be fast paced and in sync
with the song, cuts will be on beat t
make the overall music video flow
better. I will add a VHS effect to give
off a retro feel/theme. I also might
add in subtitles to the song at the
bottom of the video just for
aesthetic.
Theme will be very joyful/fun based,
the clips I use will just be put into a
compilation of fun activities and
having fun with friends.
I will be using most of the most popular
underground melodic genre conventions,
for example the setting of the music
video will be mainly in a grass forest
area and some shots at a lake which
both seem to pop up in indie music
videos quite a lot. I will also be using the
typical camera shot types that are used
In indie videos like medium shots and
close ups.
I will be using intertextuality through
the reference of horror movies,
despite reference quite a dark genre
of movies will implement it in a fun
joke sort of way so I can maintain the
theme of fun times with friends.
11. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas; what would it allow you to
do? Expand your skills? Refine something you already
know how to do?
⢠The settings I have chosen to shoot my music video at will enable me to reference
the original artist and resemble there style of music videos with my own twist.
Inaristakeover also normally shoot music videos in outside areas like fields and
forests, he also make the videos quite fast and fun themed. Because of the
inspiration im takin from Inaristakeovers music videos it will make my video fit
well with the song since the clips and audio will both have a similar feel.
⢠I will also be able to enjoy making my music video, since the theme of my video is
going to be a compilation of clips having fun and taking part in fun activities this
will allow me to enjoy the filming process. Since I will be having fun I will most
likely perform better and make the clips better quality since ill be enjoying it.
⢠Another good opportunity I will have because of working with friends is
suggestions. Since ill be working and shooting with other people they will be able
to give me good ideas and suggestions on how to improve my music video.
Working with others will ultimately improve the quality of my music video as there
is double the brainpower going into the video.
12. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas; what would it allow you to
do? Expand your skills? Refine something you already
know how to do?
⢠Since I am going to have multiple location sets in my music video, I will be able to
make the video more entertaining and attention grabbing. I will be able to better
sync and fit the video with the audio, the song im using changes tones quite a
few times so based on which part of the song is playing I can pair it with clips of a
location that fits better with that specific part of the song, different locations
might give off a similar feel to different parts of the track and I will be able to pair
them perfectly.
⢠Since the song im using is quite fast paced with many tone shifts I will be using a
lot of cuts between clips to try and sync the audio with the music video, since
there is going to be a lot of cuts this will give me the opportunity to experiment
and implement a lot of different transitions between cuts.
13. SUMMARY
⢠5 restrictions to your ideas. Think about locations, cast and personnel. Are
any elements of your idea really difficult? Do you have enough time?
⢠One restriction I have with my music video is lack of people, I will probably only be able to get 1 or 2 Pople max who
can act and be a part of the film.
⢠Another restriction I might come across is lighting as I will be filming in the dark, it might be hard to get good shots
in the dark as I wont be able to see very clearly, the focus and zoom tools also might be hard to control in the dark
since when focusing, the camera might not be able to actually see the subject of the shot that I'm trying too focus on.
⢠One other restriction might be time. I have a part time job on the days I'm not a college so the time I have to shoot
the clips is limited. It's not necessarily a problem I will most likely still be able to finish the video despite lack of
time it's just a bit of a restriction, would be much better if I had total freedom to make the video.
⢠I also do not have access to many props, not that my video relies on loads of props as a main part but it would be
nice to maybe use a football or some other sport prop to maybe add another activity we could potentially do in the
video. Any item used in sport would be useful as it would add a whole new set of clips that I could potentially put in
the music video, working with few resources can sometimes be difficult but I donât think it will be too much of a
problem.
⢠A final restriction I may have to face when producing my music video is syncing the video to the music and replicating
and showing the vibe/feel of the song in the video. The song is very fast paced which will make it hard to cut the
shots to the beat, the lyrics are also fast paced and sometimes had to make out, this will make it hard to receive the
message they are trying to get across in the song which will also make it harder to replicate the themes/feel in the
video as the lyrics play a big part in the meaning and atmosphere/feel of the song.
14. FINAL IDEA â
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Name of track / name of artist. Inaristakeover x kayudo -
cant be saved!
Brief biographical background â underground artist, not
very well known overall but well known in the
underground, started making music about a year ago
with his first song and has been makng music ever since
Links to other artists- Playboi Carti, Ken Carson
Genre info- underground melodic rap
15. FINAL IDEA â TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
â˘The song is very fast paced, the instrumental progresses quite swiftly
and changes tone and speed quite a bit, there are also times where the
beat stops or calms down for a second or so and then drops again. The
song is 2 minutes 23 seconds long, an average length song so won't be
too hard to get enough footage. In the song there is a portion where its
just the beat playing with no vocals, this could potentially give me an
opportunity to change the contents of the music video in this Portio
to signify and emphasize the change in tone of the song. Maybe in the
parts where the vocalist is singing I can have a person/persons always
in the shot and when its exclusively the beat I can just film cool shots
with no person in it to show the absence of a person in both video and
song. The track is fast paced with an in your face beat and vocals, it
has a very energetic feel to it, I will attempt to mirror this in my music
video.
16. FINAL IDEA â YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
â˘The premise of my music video will be friends having fun and taking
part in fun activities together, It will be a compilation of just cool shots
and fun activities, my editing will try and sync with the song and cuts
will be carefully placed at specific parts of the song to make the video
flow better with the song. I will be putting a VHS effect filter type thing
over the top of all my footage as im trying to present an old school
retro type vibe from the video. I will change locations in different parts
of the song to better represent the lyrics/feel of the track at specific
points. It will be mostly filmed at night and I will be using a few genre
conventions. For example, I will be implementing a range of different
camera angles including medium shots, extreme close ups and long
shots which are used a lot inn indie/alternative music videos. There
won't be much of a narrative to the video as it was advised not to make
one.

PRE-
PRODUCT
ION
ASSESSM
ENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses

of it [remember the questions in the
workbook, e.g.
pace/mood/tone/structure]
Specific outline your intended
technical/equipment requirements
Include any details that you think
[you could use material from your
pitch]
20. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access,
cost, weather? How will you manage this?
â˘There aren't really any limitations in terms of the places I would like too
film the video at, all the locations ill be filming in are open and
available 24/7 so access wont be a problem. There is no cost to enter
these places either so cost wont be a problem also. I live close to the
locations and if I decide I want to get some shots some place else that
is further away I will just bike there. Weather doesnât really bother me
in fact if it was raining that would benefit me and add to the theme of
the music video.
21. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
â˘I will be needing a camera to film with and potentially an led light for
the lighting, ill also need an SD card to store my footage on. A tripod
will also be useful. To get this kit I can just use the York college kit
application form and select what equipment I need and select a date
and time to use them.
22. FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other
specialist facilities
â˘I will do any additional edits to my video in college
whenever I have free time, I might even come in on one
of my days off if I need to finish off any little bits. I will
also do some editing at home just to assure I get
everything done and completed perfectly by the
deadline.
23. PERSONNEL
CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each
team members strengths/weaknesses? When are they
available? - Ill mainly be filming with my friend outside of college, we are
both doing the music video task so we can help each other and suggest certain
things. We are both very creative and strong in the field of producing ideas for the
video, we also work well as a team and can figure out problems quickly if one
might occur. As for weaknesses the only one I can think of is motivation.
Sometimes when things are not going how we expected we tend to give up or find
out an easier way to do a certain task. As for availability we are both fully
available Thursday-Sunday.
CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are
they available? Cost implications? Will you have to feed
them? Transport them? - No one else will really be involved in the
project.
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you? - No.
24. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
â˘As for props I will only really be using skateboards as it will be
one of the activities in the music video to show that fun
energetic theme. Also, there may be the use of the Ghosface
costume and mask in the music video.
26. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your
video, establish the relationship between the visuals and the
track itself and create a structure for you to follow when
filming
It is important that you âpre-visualizeâ the video before you
make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
ď Pre-visualization and concept boards
ď Storyboarding
ď Shot list
27. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONC
EPT BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the âlook & feelâ
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the âmise-en-sceneâ
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you to
approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have
inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

28. STRUCTU
RAL
BREAKDO
WN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g.
intro, verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad
visual ideas to each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section
when you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections
of the song, then add a slide for each section with
timings, lyrics, what happens and details on
specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section
as you go, to break up the process.
29. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
(INTRO + VERSE)
Intro lyrics- It's too late to fix this. What's the point?
This is all so pointless. Sorry I tried so hard.
Just next time that I see you, just remind me not to act just like I care.
Visual ideas for intro- For the visuals in the intro I will mainly focus on
establishing the first location of the video. Most of the shots will be of
the environment, I wont show the actual person who's going to be in
the video until the vocals start.
Verse lyrics- All those memories you killed.
You're just burning bridges you helped build. And everything that I say,
I hope it brings you back to that one day. All I have left to do is to just
keep
reminding myself to forget about you x2.
Visual ideas for verse- Will be a compilation of clips, maybe some cool
shots of the environment and shots of fun activities and just messing
around with friends. Also some cool shots of cars passing by on the
street and shots of cool buildings.
30. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
(OUTRO)
Outro lyrics- None just the beat by itself
Visual ideas for outro- For the outro I have 2 ideas, one of
the ideas is to have the same or similar clips I had in the verse
portion of the video and just put it in reverse as I feel like it will
fit the end of the song well. My 2nd idea is to just continue
with the compilation of fun clips and slowly reduce the amount
of shots the person is in to signify the departure, the song is
coming to an end and so is the time with the actor.
31. STORYBOAR
DING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to
life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you
video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
ď https://www.storyboardthat.com
ď http://www.pixton.com [very
complicated]
ď http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you
to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph
your storyboard and scan or copy to insert
it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on
Blackboard!
33. SHOT
LIST
Your shot list should contain the
sequential breakdown of what you
need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with
your storyboard
It will be your working document
when you film
It should contain the shot number,
scene number, shot description,
framing and action you will see
It should also have information on
performers in the scene and other
props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard
in the pre-production folder.
34. SHOT LIST
For the first shot I'm going to try and establish the first location
and have an extreme long shot of the environment. There won't
be anybody in this shot or any props used either. For the
second shot I will show a different part of the first location for
the video and there won't be any performers or props used in
this scene. The 3rd shot will be a close up shot of the moon.
After this I will probably put in a long shot of a city area at
night with probably some people walking around in the
background. After this it will just be a combination of long
shots, extreme long shots and some close and medium
shots of one of the locations I'm in and clips of the
performer/performers doing fun activities.
36. PRODUCTION GROUP INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested
â˘Me (Brandon Lambert). My role will mainly be just filming
and producing most of the ideas for the video all the way
through since its my music video. Ill also be responsible
for gathering any equipment I might want to borrow
from college. I will also be in some shots of the video.
⢠Alfie Horwell, His role will be just being in some of the
shots and sort of acting in them to produce a good, fun
clip. He may also make suggestions on how we can
improve my film or what we can include.
37. LOCATION
INFORMAT
ION
Information and images of your
location[s] for filming
You should have address details,
clearance/permissions for filming,
recce photos and floorplans
[including camera, equipment and
cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B
fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues
and suggest solutions
38. LOCATIONS
I will be doing a portion of my filming at York train station, the trains
passing by will go well with my film and fit the aesthetic, a risk could be
getting hurt on the tracks, but I will just simply stay away from them.
Another location I will be filming at is York sports village, the grassy
field area behind it will be a good spot for getting some extreme long
shots or long shots, there is also a bike racetrack and lake close by which
also have the potential to fit well and produce some cool shots. A risk at
the sports village could be getting in the cyclist's way on the track but I
will just stay clear of the track if there is anybody using it.
39. RISK
ASSESSM
ENT
Risk Assess each separate filming
location using the table in the
camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring
point
Completing a generic filming
assessment would be a start, then
you can add specialist/site specific
risks as you progress your
production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an
ongoing document, you should
evaluate if anything changes in
production and when you put
control measures in place
You should add the table to each
call sheet for each location
40. RISK ASSESSMENT
⢠Risks- One risk of filming in the dark might be the lack of visibility,
while concentrating on filming I might potentially trip over something
or bump into something since im occupied, this could result in injury.
Another risk is potentially being seen as committing a crime, 2 people
in a field alone looks weird and the police could potentially get called.
â˘Risk solution- For the lack of visibility I can simply use the flash on my
phone or a different phone so I can better see where I am stepping, I
could also just pay attention to where im walking and be on guard for
anything I could potentially trip over. As for looking weird and being
seen as maybe committing any crimes or doing anything bad we can
just try and make it look obvious that we are making a video, we can
use a tripod to make it clear what we are doing and have lighting
devices set up to make it even more obvious that we are making a
video and not doing anything weird.
41. CONTINGENCY
PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a
backup or to minimize the effect on
production
You should consider the following areas:
Technical, Location, Personnel and
Organizational areas [about 5 potential issues
for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on
Blackboard
42. CONTINGENCY PLAN
Potential problems Solutions
May be asked not to film at one of
the specific locations.
Either ask nicely if we can film there since it's
for our media project and assure them we
won't be any bother or cause any problems, if
they still decline, we can just replace that spot
for another and find somewhere else similar for our
shots instead.
Phone or camera might die Firstly to reduce the chance of either of
the devices dying we could make sure they are
fully charged before leaving to go and film. Even
if they do somehow die we can just find a
charging port and charge them back up. Worst
case scenario both our filming devices die
and we cant find anywhere to charge, if this is
the case we can just simply come back another day.
The person I'm working with isn't available If the person I am working with is not available on a
day I want to film then I can just wait for the to
available next or go and film by myself and focus on
environment shots or get clips with myself in using a
tripod.
May not know how to do a certain
thing with the camera, for example
how to zoom in or focus.
If I forget how to do a certain thing with the camera
thatâs needed for my video I can just google how to
do it.
43. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Your schedule should budget a total of 10 hours for
production, that is for the filming and editing of your
project.
You should plan when youâre filming and how you intend
to use the in class days on your timetable/class schedule
44. SCHEDULE
Week Activity
1 Getting most of the footage filmed and composing the clips and putting them
into order as I get them so I donât have to take ages figuring out what order to
put the clips in.
2 Getting the rest of the footage for my video, composing it all into an ordered
music video with the song synced with the clips. At this stage I will also make a
start on the editing process an decide what editing techniques I want to use.
3 In the 3rd week I will finish all the editing and complete all the finishing
touches and make it perfect for the deadline.
45. CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
Any place you film and anyone you use in the
filming of your video must have a completed form
Blank forms are available for you to complete and
insert here, you can also create your own
