2. Production techniques research
• Research potential production techniques you might want to use or
feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to camera,
editing, story, sound, etc
• You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your research.
• You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might
help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also ask
potential target audience what they think.
• You may need to add extra slides!
• With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or
how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it
completely
• Always think about your investigations links to your intentions and
production!
3. Product 1: a-ha – Take On Me
• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djV11Xbc914
This existing product is very similar to how I want my music video to pan out. They
have used animation and also they have used video footage too. In this music video
the have added the two together into the same clip and to do this you must need
to be very skillful at editing videos and also drawing. I don’t think that the song has
anything to do with the music video and I am going to make mine have context. The
music video that I have chose is a concept based music video because they have
concentrated on a
specific editing
technique. A concept
based music video
doesn’t always have
to consist of one
idea. For example
this one, it uses
video and animation.
animation style
videos usually don’t
have anything real
to show the viewer.
Even though the
music is produced
by the artist. i will
add animation into
my music video but
I probably wont be
able to match the
standard of quality.
4. Product 2: Coldplay - Paradise
• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G4isv_Fylg
This music video is a concept based music video and I can see this because the
whole video is based on the one specific elephant. This will be similar to my
music video because my video will be based on the artist flying on balloons and
also focusing on his surroundings. This video is a very high production video so
they will of used an expensive camera to get the best quality they possibly could
and also would of used a top of the top editor. The music video fits the sound
perfectly because the video is out in the desert implying that it is like paradise.
The music video also tell a story all the way through it so it could also be classed
as a narrative video too. The elephant is on is own the whole way through
searching for help and other
elephants and at the end of the
music video he finds other
elephants to hang out with.
5. Product 3: Sam Smith - I'm Not The Only One

rEMMKcWsQ1B&index=5
This type of music video is a narrative based video and I am also going to sort
of add parts in to my video to make it tell a story. From the video you can tell
that I clearly tells a story as the wife knows that the husband is cheating on
her with someone else. The whole way through the music video we have a
narrative that is being played by a few different characters. This video has a
really nice colour correction throughout the video and really makes you feel a
way for the characters in the music video. The music video fits the type of
music really well which you should expect when you watch these types of
videos.
6. Genre and artist breakdown
• Think about the conventions of music video and which of these you
feel are the most appropriate for you video and why
• Think about the genre characteristics for your chosen artist – how do
you plan to employ these?
• Which techniques and styles do you think fans of your chosen genre
prefer? What should you expect to see in that type of music video?
• Use the following slides to show your ideas and explain these using
good illustrative examples – this is where your research and
explorations should start. Remember to consider the aspects we
looked at in class [and the academic things from Goodwin, etc].
7. Conventions
• I feel like the most appropriate conventions for my music video will
will be the style of the music video. This is important because people
don’t just want to see a random video that makes no sense at all,
they would rather see something that makes sense and is interesting.
Also another part that I think will be really important for my music
video will be the editing techniques because I will be making the
video fit to the music and also add different transitions in-between
clips to keep the viewer interested.
8. Genre Chacteristics
• I plan to employ the different characteristics into my music video by
having the genre of music play over the top of the clips and then edit
the clips the the beat of the songs. The genre of music that I am
going to be using will be EDM music and they have a veriety of
different ways music videos are filmed. Some of them are the artists
playing in front of a crowd or it can be someone flying through a city
which wont be realistic but they are still able to pull it off in a music
video.
9. Chosen approach/justification
• I think the fans of my chosen genre really enjoy music videos that are
really vibrant and have all sorts of different effects throughout the
video. I lot of the videos that I ave watched have a lot of bright
colours and also a lot of them have their fans in their music video
too. I think the people that like this type of music want to dance to it
and hear it at a party or somewhere like that.
10. Experiment 1 - Process
In this experiment I made
the canvas size
1920x1080 pixels. This is
the standard size for a
1080p video. Before I
started to create this I
knew that it was going to
be very simple. I made
the background white
and then drew a man
holing a balloon. I used
the brush tool at size 10
in black to draw this.
11. Experiment 1 - Process
To create the second
layer for this animation I
made sure that onion
skins were on so I could
see the layer below it.
This helps because I can
draw over the original
image and then only
change the balloon to
make it look like it has
moved in the animation. I
then did this all the way
until the balloon went off
the top of the page and I
also changed how the
character looked as the
animation progressed on.
12. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
• Some of the elements that I will use in my final product is the
animation. So pretty much the whole thing. I will spend more time on
the animation and also make sure the drawing is 100% better. In the
experiments I quickly made a character just so I had something there.
The longest part was that I had to animate it, that did take some
time.
13. Experiment 2 - Process
The first thing that I did was go and
collect the clips from around the
college for my experiments. I also
used my animation that I made and
put it into this video because that is
what I am going to do for my final
project. To start I I added a dip to
black on the opening video clip and
audio. I did this because I feel like a
video always looks better when it
fades in. I have made the audio clip
play all the way through the video
with no cuts just so it sounds better
and then added a fade at the end
otherwise the audio would of just
stopped out of no where. On most
of the clips I have added a dip to
black because it think it fits better
with the music.
14. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product? What about this process has been notable [positive and
negative]?
• I will be using most of the elements that I have used in my experiments and I
will also be experimenting with other aspects of the software to make my
final product the best it can be.
