3. Mind map analysis
• I split my initial ideas for a video based project into three sections: a
documentary, an experimental short film and a music video. Doing this
allowed me to think about more ideas for these three ways to stylize my
video.
• I could think of the most ideas for a documentary based around mental
health as this was what I had done my research into as it was my initial
idea.
• I noted that in my music video section I could collaborate with local artists
in york however although this idea is an interesting one that I could
develop in various ways I think that it would be too difficult to find an
artist that would be willing to go along with this or even just a local artist
in general.
• I used the mind map as a way to plan some alternative initial ideas
however I’m still very invested in making a documentary on the issues of
mental health.
4. My finalized Idea
Create a documentary/short film that interviews
an artist aged 16-25 about their experiences
with mental health disorders while they create a
piece of art that expresses their experience. I
want to create this as I have connections to
people who are willing to be a part of it and I
can provide them with the materials they need
to create the art. I want to make some really
creative and interesting ways to edit this
documentary so that I am making as much of a
6. Mind map analysis
• In my aesthetic choices I wrote about how I could use the artists painting to create the artistic
choice in my video. I could have the colour scheme of my video be the same as the artists
painting and use quick cuts in my editing if the artist uses quick brush strokes and use longer
shots if the artists is taking their time to carefully paint their work. I think I could also use the
sound design and music in my video to match this by using music that expresses the same
feelings as the artist has made in their work. I think that doing this would make my work
more artistic as well as making it easy to get invested in the atmosphere and design of the
artists work
• I noted down some methods I could use while filming to get a variety of shots as well as the
best ways to get my artist to speak openly about their experiences. I would like to use
interesting shots such as POVs, still shots and tracking shots as I think think this would keep
the audience engaged.
• In my setting section I listed area’s where I would want to film B-role as I think most of the
places I listed are atmospheric. I want the atmosphere/aesthetic of my video to feel very
cathartic.
• I also wrote about directors that have influenced my ideas for this project. I mentioned
Werner Herzog as he has been involved in a few famous documentary style films which I
found emotive and interesting. I included Andrei Tarkovsky as an influence as even though he
wasn’t much of a documentary film maker I think that a lot of the cinematography in his work
is atmospheric in the same way that I want the replicate in my video. I chose the directors
Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi a they were directors of Free Solo (2018) which was
7. Art Installation Layout
• If I were to have my project shown as an art installation I would
arrange it so that there would be three screens placed around the
room where people could walk around and listen to the stories
separately.
• This layout for an art installation is very basic as the viewer cannot
interact with the screens and the layout isn’t very original however it
serves is function to present information clearly without being to
complicated to set up.
• The boards can be arranged into different shapes and layouts to
make them look more visually interesting.
• I think that if I use a different layout it could be a better way to show
my creativity in this project.

• The main way that video projects are presented in art installations is through
projections so there are various ways that projections can be used to merge
both physical and video art.
• I could use projectors in college to create an effect where my video is projected
onto an object relating to the overall theme of my project and film the results as
it could create a really nice looking effect that would link to the clients brief.
• Projections can be used in art in various ways. Videos can be projected onto
models to create the illusion of movement or it can be projected through fabric
or onto buildings or walls. This all creates the effect of movement where there
shouldn’t be.
9. Art Installation Layout
• For my art installation I want to project the video I make onto
the painting that my artist has made, I think that this would be
an artistic way to show the collaboration between me and the
artist as it would create the sense that both the video and the
painting are linked.
• Projecting the video onto the painting would also allow me to
make some really interesting shots that allow the video to
interact with the painting so that the light from the projector
traces the brush strokes (this might not work) it would look
like the painting is lighting up as it is worked on in the video.
• Using this form of projection as my art piece would definitely
elevate my video to a more artistic style which suits the brief
of the client as it would connect the artists painting and my
video.
10. For my project I’ve decided to work with an artist who’s in the same age range as my target
audience as I think this would make their story more relatable to my audience.
I have a choice of four artists that I could work with in my video all of which I have discussed the
project with. My original plan was to make a short video for all of them however I think that I’d be
giving myself way too much work to do with that so instead I chose to only work with one artist
as I think that would allow me to focus on make one video to the highest quality.
Fiona is probably my best option for an artist as she is currently doing for art A-levels so she will
probably create something that looks really good. She also seemed really interested in my project
and when I asked if she wanted to be in it she gave a very enthusiastic which lead me to believe
that she will probably be the most likely to turn up to film it.
I’ve asked Holly Clark to help me out as my back up artist in case Fiona can’t make it as she was
interested in my project when I was telling her about it. I think that Holly is a great candidate for
my project as she seems to know a lot about mental health so I think that she will have a lot that
she wants to discus in the interview. I’ve made sure that my other candidates are willing to take
Holly’s place if she changes her mind or can’t make It on the day of filming.

12. B-roll Colour Scheme
Forest area colour scheme Yorks colour scheme
I want the colour scheme of my b-roll to be a mix of natural environments such as rivers,
forests and flowers. I want to mix these shots with footage of places in york and my artist on
their own. I want my B-role to mainly consist of shots that have a different colour scheme to
my main shots as my main shots will have a similar colour palette to my artists painting.
B-roll colour scheme
13. Production Experiments
• I wanted to experiment with transitions as
an experiment as it seemed like it’d be a
useful tool to have while making my
project as it would help me make a video
that has seamless cuts between shot to
have some sequences that flow together.
• The finished product came out really well
and it was simple to edit so this is defiantly
something I could include in my video.
• I also made a reversal effect in my video
where I used effects in after effects to
make it look like the video was rewinding in
the style of a VHS tape. This also turned
out surprisingly well and although I
probably won’t use it in this project it
might be useful for future projects.

14. Locations/ shot ideas
When I was thinking of ways to make my
project a little more creative I decided that I
could add shots of nature into moments in
my interview as I find nature to be calming. I
went near the river that I live close to take
some shots of the scenery so I had a better
understanding of what I could film to get a
calming atmosphere.
I took a picture of a house infront of the river
as I thought it stood out from the trees
surrounding it so in my project I could use a
shot like this as a visual metaphore for if my
artist talks about feeling bad due to
deprssion.
I took a long shot of the river which was
similar to a shot I used in my horror trailer. I
don’t think this shot worked as it doesn’t feel
calming and it doesn’t have a nice
composition.
15. Locations/shot ideas
I wanted my shots of natural areas
to have a meaning and purpose so
that they don’t feel too
disconnected from the rest of the
video. In a shot of the railings I
thought that in my video I could film
a shot of my artist stood behind the
railings as it would be a visual
metaphore for how mental health
issues such as depression and
anxiety can feel like a prison as the
railings can look like prison bars.
For my next image I filmed a close
up of some plants I found and I
learnt that I could do a focus pull to
create a cool effect where you see
the background of the river and
then the foregroung of the plants. I
liked this effect as it feels quite
atmospheric.
16. Locations/shot ideas
For this shot I imagined my artist
stood in the passageway made by
the trees, I like this shot as I thik the
lighting is nice and it creates a sense
of isolation which I think ties into the
subject of mental health especially
with depression and anxiety as it
effects social interactions causing a
sense of isolation.
For this shot I stood ontop of a bridge
going over the river and I took a shot of
the roof tops that you could see from
the bridge. I think that if I were to use
this in my project then I would do a
close up shot of my artist looking out
across the bridge that turns to show
the view they were looking at. I think
that this would look quite cinematic as
well as showing more visual isolation.
17. Colour grading
No grade Colour grade
For this grade I wanted to bring out the green in the trees and
the browns of the walls however this created a kind of sepia
tone because of the brown colour grading. Although this bring
out more colour from the image it also makes the grading
very obvious because the sky becomes a noticeably different
colour so I think that when buildings are in shots I may have
to try and avoid having the sky in the shots or avoid adjusting
the colour.
18. Colour grading
Colour gradeNo grade
I like my colour grading for this shot as the change in
colour is subtle as it brings out the different colours in the
image without them being too in your face. I think that this
grade would only work for shots of plant life as it may look
extremely different if something such as a building or the
sky were to be in shot. I’ve noticed that the more subtle
my grading is the better it looks so for my video I will try
and keep my grading pretty subtle unless my artists
painting is very vibrant.
19. Colour grading
No grade Colour grade
Although I like this close up shot of the
hanging braches from the willow trees I
think that my colour grading could’ve
been better. I tried to brign out the green
of the leaves and although I did this I
think that it could be more subtle as it
looks like I put a green filter over the
image instead of the green only being in
the foreground where the leaves are. I
think that this is because I adjusted the
colour of the shadows where I should’ve
adjusted the midtones or the highlights. I
need to make sure not to repeat these
20. Colour grading
No grade Colour grade
For this shot I wwanted to experiment a bit as I thought that if
my artist paints in black and white then I could grade my video
so that it’s black and white. Grading an image to be black and
white takes a lot more thought than expected as you need to
adjust aspects such as the contrast and the exposure to make
sure that everything in the image is clear as some parts in black
and white can be hard to make out as they can appear to be
similar shades. Overall I’m pleased with my grading in this
photo as it’s prepared me for if my artist does use black and
white and it’s taught me a new lesson about colour grading.
21. Music
I’m going to create my own music backing track
for my short film as it would mean that I can
create an atmosphere that suits the overall tone
of my video without having to worry about using
copyrighted music or having non copyright
music that doesn’t suit my video.
Depending on the style of my artists painting I
want to use different music for example if the
artist makes a painting that looks serene and
22. I’ve decided to get rid of the idea to add shots of natural areas into my
project as I think that it’s too disconnected from the message that I’m trying
to convey and it may confuse the audience as well as increasing the length
of the video. I am also debating on whether to remove the idea of using
editing that matches the painting my artist makes but I think that it would be
a good idea to do this as although it would go against all my planning and
the clients brief by making my project less creative I think that it would
improve my video overall by letting my artist be the focus of the video with
their creativity and expression being displayed rather than me trying to force
my creativity ontop of that through obnoxious editing choices. After making
this choice I feel a lot better about the future of this project as I think that I
feel a lot more free now to make the right decisions about making my artists
story as meaningful and signifcant as possible.
In retrospect I should’ve thought through some of my initial ideas more
carefully rather than proceeding with options that have lead me to make
choices that have affected my project so hugely like this. I think that in
future projects I will could try and do some second thoughts to my initial
plans so that I can avoid making the same mistakes.
A Big Choice/Change
25. Story Boards
I created my storyboards as I want to be able to have clear thoughts in my head
about what I want my finished video to look like. In doing this I’ve given myself a
clearer understanding of what I truly think my project should look like. I made my
story boards fairly short as I only detailed which shots types of shots I really
wanted to use as there will be some shots such as the time-lapse and the close
up shots. I think that because there isn’t going to be much of a narrative to my
video other than an introduction, the interview and a closing message, I made
my story boards more based on how I want the video to look rather than focusing
on the narrative of the video which is why the story board is fairly short. I made
this story board after I found out that Fiona could’nt be my artist as she’d
become ill and most likely won’t be able to film which is why the name on the
story board is changed to Holly. Making my story boards has helped me to get a
better understanding of what my finished project should look like and although it
seems failrly simple especially after the changes I’ve made to my plan I have
hope that it’ll turn out really well.
26. Sound effects/ audio

29. Production schedule
week 1
• Tuesday – I will spend the first day of production either
editing my footage or creating my music depending on
whether I’ve started filming at this point although I am
planning to film on Monday I most likely would've finished
filming by Tuesday.
• Thursday – I will use Thursday to continue editing my video so
that all the clips are in the right order and are edited to the
right length.
• Friday – I will most likely finish ordering and clipping my
footage and start working on any effects and colour grading
that I need in my video.
• At the the end of every day I will make an entry for my
production evaluation.
30. Production schedule
week 2
• Tuesday – I will finish editing the colour
grading and effects in my video and begin
working on the sound effects for the video
• Thursday – On Thursday I’ll add the sound
effects I made into my video and begin
creating some music in garage band that suits
the video
• Friday – I will carry on creating the music as it
would most likely take me a while to find and
create a sound that works for the video
31. Production schedule
week 3
• Tuesday – I will finish my music and add it to
my video and then make any final adjustments
to my video if necessary.
• Thursday – I will set up the projector and bring
in the painting and record my art installation
and then edit it to create another video.
• Friday – I will finish creating my art installation
video and look over all of my work to see if
there's anything else to edit.
32. Production schedule
4
• if my production takes longer than I expected
or I run into any issues then I will use the time
from this week to fix any major mistake or
time miscalculations as this is something that
will probably happen at one point. If every
thing turns out fine then I’ll finalize any
adjustments to the visual/audio aspects of my
project either in my art installation video or
my actual video.
