2. Reflection
• What are you making?
I am making a travel/music video that will advertise York to younger people. I
will make the music from scratch on Garageband so I can avoid any sort of
copyright. I will grab footage over the course of a weekend, creating
cinematic shots that I can then stabilize in post if it’s necessary. Most of the
work will be done in post as I have so many different ideas for editing that I
want to do. They’ll be a lot of cuts and transitions that I will have to create
myself as well as different filters that I will also have to make from scratch.
• Why?
I chose to make this because it allows me to be creative with my editing. I’m
taking a big risk with this as I’m trying to do a lot of new techniques but if
these risks pay off then the finishing product can look great. It will also let me
determine which techniques work so by the time my FMP comes along, I will
have a wider array of skills within my editing prowess.
3. Reflection
• Who is it for?
My audience doesn’t interest either gender, however following the
stereotypes of males and females, I’d probably edge more towards male due
to the wide array or pubs with themes such as Vikings and sports. As it is
basically an advert for York showing off all the best looking places, it could
appeal to anyone. My target audience is trying to interest 16-24 year olds,
however the majority would be 18 or over as I have a lot of focus on pubs and
bars. I don’t have a target for any particular sexuality either, however as it’s
wanting people to come to York, the majority of people who would see it are
heterosexuals, as they make up 95% of the population. York is also a kind of
expensive place. This is important as it affects the social grades for my
audience classification. Because of the price of the city, my audience would
be a majority of C1/B classes, both middle class and lower middle class if
they’re not students. Of the seven main types of Psychographics, Belonger is
the type of person I would attract, as they are most likely living in a small city,
one like York so it wouldn’t be a big move. As they are brand loyal and prefer
UK made products, York could be for them. York has many independent
businesses that would attract this psychographic.
7. Mindmap Analysis
The mindmap that I made clearly shows a favourite for what idea I should pursue.
Music video has the most ideas around it therefore it’s most likely the one I should go
for. Both of the other ideas seem a bit thin, however the project is supposed to show
York and so I need to incorporate them into my production a little bit. For example, I
could use the music video as a way to show off York, which adds a travel video
element to it.
I have a lot of ideas for what I could do in post for the music video, as shown on the
right of the map. However, these ideas aren’t limited to just a music video, the editing
techniques I want to try are suitable for any of the ideas I had. A con of the travel
video and documentary is that I’d have to add a script and have people speaking,
which I don’t really want as it can make the entire project unnecessarily complex if I
bring in actors who have to learn a script. On the other hand, a travel video would be
the perfect way to show off the city in a very cinematic way. Of the three ideas, I think
the only one I would completely rule out is documentary. Considering my idea is
mainly pub based to appeal to my target audience, a documentary would be difficult
to make interesting.
8. Mindmap - Developing the idea
From my analysis of the mindmap, it’s best if I go with the music video. However the
main idea of the entire project is to show off York, so there’s areas of a travel video
that I want to add into it.
The music video will be less of a story and instead be more cinematic. I will use a song
with clear and obvious beats which will make the editing look better, so far I have a
few ideas for what songs I could use but nothing as of now is set in stone. I also have a
few ideas for different shots that I’ve never tried before. If I get a short time-lapse in
the exact same position as an old black and white photo of York, I could put spots of
old York into the shot, as though they’re random blotches. It’s shots like this that will
make my video different and like something I’ve never done before. I want to make my
video stand out and be different to other adverts for York and spending the majority
of my production time on Premiere Pro creating something that’s one of a kind is the
perfect way to do this.
9. What Song?
Finding a song would be difficult because of the fact that that we’re creating projects
for a client so we have to use copyright free music. I already had some ideas for what
songs I could use, however all of them are unusable due to copyright laws. To counter
this I will find some royalty free music, and if I don’t find anything I like then I will
create a song myself on Garageband. If I have time left after editing, I could create a
second video using the song I originally had planned and then not use it for my final
project, just so I could see how well it could’ve turned out.
I’m looking for music that has quick beats so I can regularly change the shot on the
beat. Due to the fact that I am experimenting with the work I do in post, I’m not
looking for anything slow as it will make the video boring.
If my own music can’t be used, use this royalty free song:

10. Garageband Music – What
Instruments Will Work?
There’s a few instruments that I do want to use to
make my music. Because I want very clear beats I
think some obvious ones to use are drums and a
bass guitar. I also want to use an electric guitar to
try and add some excitement to the song, and also
a piano. I think the piano is the most important
instrument because it’s such a staple for these kind
of videos. On Garageband there’s several different
types of certain instruments, so it’s important I use
the right ones. I will go for the classic piano sound
because I don’t want anything too electronic, this
goes for all instruments really. I want simple sounds
and a basic song, anything too complicated would
take too long but if it sounds good, then that’s
good enough for me.
11. Pricing
Clifford's Tower Free (if I still have an English Heritage
card, otherwise £5.70)
Drinks (For a specific shot) Around £2.50 each (Most likely £5
total)
Bus into the City Center £2
The prices of everything will vary so there isn’t one specific price that
everything is. I want to keep costs down and let my work speak for itself.
13. Moodboard Analysis
The reason I have created a moodboard is to get inspiration and work out a colour
scheme that I would have to use. I need a colour scheme because I want to use a
variety of filters and there’s some that I may not be able to use with certain colours. As
seen on my moodboard, there’s a lot of dim brown colours. This means that I won’t be
able to use any filters that are too dark as I want everything to be seen with ease. I
don’t want the colour scheme to be the same throughout the video, so I think mixing
shots between outside and in would work better. I’m hoping that the weather will be
good, because I rely heavily on the cinematography and I wouldn’t get the shots I want
if there’s miserable weather.
On the moodboard the shots are from various angles. There’s a mix of close and
extreme-wide shots. This is inspiring to me because I really want to incorporate an
extremely wide array of shots and my moodboard has given me lots of inspiration as
to what I could do to accomplish this.
14. Speeding up footage and adding blur is something I’ve never done before,
the meaning of this experiment is to try it out. It may not come out perfect
but I think it’s important that I try it out before going into production.
Result:
Adding the blur proved to be extremely difficult. I only wanted it on the
edges so it actually looks like it’s meant to be there rather than just having
the whole screen blurry. I don’t think I achieved this to the degree I would’ve
liked because it just looks too busy and jumpy rather than a moving time
lapse. It’s something I’m looking to improve on next time, and spend even
more time trying to perfect the blur that I want.
Experiment 1: Speed
15. The second experiment I want to try is some
different transitions and cuts. This can give my
video something extra and keep it interesting.
Different cuts are a great way of keeping a video
alive so it’s important that I practice these so I
can get them right.
Result:
Although I messed up a little bit, the outcome is
still useful. The cut was okay and I know what I
have to do next time to improve. Next time
when I hide the camera between scenes I need
to make it one colour so the transition would be
smoother. It’s a simple fix that will be easy to do
next time.
Experiment 2: Cut
16. Fonts
Getting the right font is important for my video as it can complete the look that I’m
going for. I want something bold that stands out and can be easily read by everyone.
Universal Serif is a good, simple choice.
It’s not too bold and not too thin, it
would be a good choice.
Just Old Fashion may be a bit thin but
the fact that it looks old fashioned
may give it an advantage.
The Bold Font is simple, but it does
what I want. It’s a large font that can
dominate the screen, which is what I
want for a title.
After thinking about all three, I will go for the bold font. It’s prominent and can take
over the screen. If I add the right colour to it it can look amazing with the city in the
background.
17. Contingency Planning
Potential Issue Solution
My save gets corrupt/ Electricity
goes off
I create backup files so I have
multiple copies. I may still lose
some, but not very much if I save
regularly.
Camera runs out of charge. Always keep a spare battery in the
camera bag to replace it.
Internet goes off during uploading. I have a memory stick so I could
upload everything I need onto that
then upload it at home.
My music isn’t good enough to use. I will have a royalty free song
prepared as a backup just in case.
18. Potential Issue How to avoid issue
Eye pain and headaches from screens Take regular short breaks to avoid the pain
and keep the monitor in line with eyes
Back and neck pain Sit straight in the chair and stand up
during a short break if necessary
Fatigue Drink water regularly
Stiff legs and feet Move around in breaks and rotate ankles
to keep them moving

19. Shotlist
Shots Description
1 From the train station, walk to the minister. Speed up massively and add blur
while moving.
2 Time lapse of a street, with sections of old buildings edited in.
3 Close up of pub sign with slowly moving camera.
4 Cut to inside with cinematic shot of the surroundings.
5 Lay camera on the bar, then spin cut.
6 Spin cut goes onto table with a shot of drinks.
7 Close up onto the top of the drink.
8 Close up of a bottle with a drop of water running down it.
9 Transitions to a different street with another time lapse.
10 Goes to another pub, wide shot of the outside.
11 Transition to the inside by throwing the camera up, add blur. Camera then
comes up from the bottom of the table to reveal the inside.
20. 12 Repeat cinematic shots of the surroundings.
13 Have close ups of specific items that stand out, for example, a knick-
knack on the wall.
14 Wide panning shot of the street.
15 Final pub, close up of the sign again.
16 Cinematic inside shots.
17 Time lapse showing the sunset from the river.
18 Wide shot of the minister lit up at night.
19 The busiest street showing off the nightlife.
20 Finish by bringing in the title simply saying “York”
Note that these are only the finalised shots and more will probably
be added the time of filming. When including editing, the shotlist is
not very representative of my final product.
21. Production Schedule
Production Week 1:
Week one I will spend creating the music for my video. I want to make
something with clear beats that I will be able to change the shot to, creating
more of a fast paced video. At this point I will already have my footage as it
will be shot the weekend before however the music is arguably one of the
most important areas so I want to get that done first.
Production Week 2:
This week will also mostly be about music as it’s a long process and it’s very
important I get it right. This may not take all week however, and so if I finish
it, the remainder of the week will be spent editing. I will be looking to start
simple by sticking some of the shots together for the beginning of the video.
It will be done in small sections as there’s so much editing that I’m planning
on doing.
22. Production Schedule
Production Week 3:
This week will all be spent editing. I will be doing it sections but keeping it
simple to start with. Once I’m happy with the results of the basic editing,
making sure it’s on beat with the music and other important basic ideas, I will
then start the more complex areas such as filters and adding the blur effects.
Production Week 4:
Week 4 is the final week of production. I will aim to finish editing by Thursday,
completing all the intricate ideas I had for editing. After uploading it and
adding it onto my website, I can then spend a day concentrating on other
items for my client project. I will be able to improve other previous
PowerPoints or start my evaluation early which can be a massive advantage
going into the last week of the project.
