3. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or donât like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
4. MUSIC VIDEO IDEAS
1. animation. Find out a bunch of objects and gifs that fit into the music and have
them float around them while they preform animating it off and on screen.
Would be fully animated by hand
Have multiple backgrounds and switch ups to make the music video not stale.
Coloured in depending on mood of the song
Pros: would be unique as a lot of music videos havent done it before
would look more professional
Cons: time consuming
art experience may not be enough
may not have a song that goes with the idea
2. irl video recordings with drawn special effects in to make the character dancing
glow and have more into the action.
High editing will go into this idea
Pros: still gives the animation/art effect
not many people have done it before
Cons: time consuming
difficulty
3. lyrics of the song used in an abstract way with easter eggs related to the song
Would be drawn in with a comic book type style.
Would be brightly coloured in
4. short film portraying the songs idea.
Would have to do with the songs entire idea i.e. romance, war etc.
5. one direction rapper type music video which is just showing off and doesn't
have much to do with the song.
Wouldnât really have anything related but would show the correct persona
5. MUSIC VIDEO IDEAS
3. lyrics of the song used in an abstract way with easter eggs related to the song
Would be drawn in with a comic book type style.
Would be brightly coloured in
Pros: easy to do
wont take up much time
Cons: not necessarily impressive
bit too simple
a lot of people have done it before
4. short film portraying the songs idea.
Would have to do with the songs entire idea i.e. romance, war etc.
Pros: would give the music video meaning
fun to do
may be able to link it to something the song already is linked towards
Cons: number of people
time consuming
may not have the right idea
5. one direction rapper type music video which is just showing off and doesn't have
much to do with the song.
Wouldnât really have anything related but would show the correct persona
Pros: easy to do
wouldn't take much time/ production
Cons: boring
too easy
wouldn't relate to music video
pointless
6. MUSIC VIDEO IDEA
EVALUATIONOverall numbers 1 and 2 are the most appealing to do but they
would take the most amount of time. Id like to add
artwork/animation into the product but I may not have enough
time to do so. The song with have to do with something I'm able
to animate which may not be a possibility.
Numbers 3 and 5 are a bit too simplistic and overall just
wouldnât be worth the effort for a small quality music video. Is a
great option depending on how much time I have. If I run out of
time I'm able to use these two idea as something to fall back on
Number 4 is a great idea but would be very time consuming and
hard to put together. It would create a lot of work to be able to
make this the quality I want it to be. Also some things may be
out of reach for example sets, people to act in the scenes,
quality cameras and required setups.
The one I want to do the most is number 1. the easiest to do is
number 5. the best quality would be 1 or 4. so overall I'm going
to choose number 1 to do as it suits my idea the best and makes
the process easier.

Ava Max- Freaking me out: lots of visual lyrics in the song that I can use for
the music video. Tells a small story but doesnât include enough for a full music
video of visuals.
ELO- Mr. blue sky: doesnât have a music video. Can picture a lot of visuals for
the music video. Doesnât say enough for a short film music video.
Ruth B.- Lost boy: tells a full story about peter pans lost boy and neverland.
Good visuals for music video and characters that already exist therefore easier
to plan.
Lukas Graham- 7 years: tells a full story about growing up. Could be used
effectively with a short film. Would require a lot of work which may not have

8. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 â add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
Youâve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
9. RESEARCH
Links to music videos:
Beerus- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sE74_ucrAXQ
Ares: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CPzBQiz_Yk
on point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TofmKTHkAGE
Camerawork: in Beerus Zooming in onto the character gives mystery to
see the final product. Also zooming in on to the products being used to
create this god also keeps us wondering what the character is going to
become once finished. Also in ares they make the lighting show off the
house in the background to make sure thatâs the primary focus in the
scene. It shows the how big the house is to show how much money the
rapper has. This may be used with one of the idea to make the
character stand out more in the short film and give them some sort of
props to light up to make them seem more powerful
Editing: At the very end of Beerus the character is duplicated to make it
look like there is an army behind KSI. This gives a look at how powerful
the character is. Giving him a whole army also shows power and
popularity. And in on point at the end of the video ksi is wielding a
infinity gauntlet. The editing to show the infinity stones glowing gives
more of an effect that he is almighty which is his approach.
10. RESEARCH
Art design: the art design in beerus comes from the
clothing. When they show the product the scientist
created being beerus. Ksi is wearing the outfit of beerus
to make the clothing and music video have more
structure to it. This will be used in every idea because I
was to be as correct with clothing/style/background as
much as I possibly can
Performance: the scientist scene is done excellently to
make the story as realistic as possible. This is done
because they want to show how beerus was created
clearly and make sure most of the audience can
understand it without it being too complex. This will be
used in every idea as I want the audience to be able to
understand what is happening with ease
11. POTENTIAL SONGSLink to Ava Max-Freaking me out:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9vpeZN4O5E
Link to Ruth B.-Lost boy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58TBZnvyGwQ
Ruth b.-lost boy: good lyrics focusing on a story. Would be easy to
animate as it tells a story using an existing character. There is already
an existing music video but not with the style I'm going for.
Ava Max-freaking me out: music video is mostly lyrics therefore the
style I'm going for would be different. Has a lot of visual representation
in the lyrics.
Overall I think I'm going to choose Ruth b.- lost boy as it tells a story in
the lyrics that I can use for my animation. It also uses existing
characters so the design becomes a lot easier as I already know what
they look like. The story is about one of the lost boys finding a home.
Ava max does have a lot of visuals but not to put into any sort of
sequence/animation that would make sense.
12. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES
In my idea there is a lot of different art techniques and
animation techniques I can use. The animation I will be
going for is simply cartoon with frame by frame
animation. The art technique I will use will be similar to
the cartoon story of peter pan. As the music is related to
peter pan and his lost boys it would be a lot easier to
base my artwork around the animated film.
I have chosen to have it like this so I can be as close as
possible to the original peter pan which the song is
talking about. This will make my music video look more
official and realistic. This also gives me an easier idea to
put the music video together and get my plan to animate
it to work in time.
13. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO
USEAnimation is a convention I plan to use. Having an art
background and doing art as a hobby makes the process
of animation easier. I have done animation before and
not done camerawork so sticking to doing animation
makes the music video easier to make as I already have
some sort of knowledge in animation in comparison to
no knowledge in camerawork.
Camerawork I've never done once because I have had no
reason to in the past. Picking up a camera and using it
correctly would be a difficult process and will overall
make the music video a low quality product and time
consuming.
15. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
Short film gives me the opportunity to learn to make a
short film.
Animation gives me the opportunity to get better at
making animations.
Animation and dance routine gives me the opportunity to
learn to make a dance routine and animate effects over
the top of it.
Animation also gives me the opportunity to get better at
artwork in general.
Filming gives me the opportunity to learn camerawork,
lighting etc.
16. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
Animation may take too long and I may not have enough
time to get the full animation done.
Filming I have no experience in therefore would have to
learn first which I also may not have time for.
Lyrics is to simple to do and may not give me an overall
good outcome due to its simplicity
Short film would take a lot longer to think of the idea
and put it all together.
Typical music video would have no impact towards the
song and would make no sense although being an easy
option it more than likely isnât an actual option.
17. FINAL IDEA â
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
The name of the artist and track is: Ruth B.- Lost Boy
Brief biographical background: Lost boy is about the
characters from peter pan known as the lost boys. The
artists put herself in one of their shoes and tells his
story. This shows the characters feelings from being a
lost boy to having a home in neverland.
Links to other artists: this song links back to the artists
James Matthew Barrie and Libby Hamilton. These people
mentioned are the creators of the story peter pan which
the song is inspired by.
Genre info: the song is in the pop music genre.
18. FINAL IDEA â TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
The track is a first person perspective of one of the lost
boys from peter pan. Going through one of the lost boys
thoughts of what its like to go to neverland and finally
find a home. This gives a different perspective towards
the film peter pan giving you a behind the scenes look
into ones of their lives. The duration is long giving us the
entire story of how the lost boy got to where he is today.
The pace of the song is quite slow like being read from a
book. This makes the song seems more like a story that
an actual lost boy has written. This makes the style of
the song to be more like a narrative childrens book with
the twist of it being a song.
19. FINAL IDEA â YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your interpretation, use of
imagery or narrative, genre conventions, etc]
Starts off with a lost boy (cubby) in a dark room to symbolise loneliness. Pans
towards a window with the man in the moon (peter pan) pans back to lost boy
closing eyes and transitions to a black shadow flying high. Peter pan shows up
from the shadow and say âpeter pan thatâs what they call me, I promise that youll
never be lonely.â Pan over to the lost body (cubby) in neverland hanging out with
peter pan in the woods. Transitions to scene of captain hook. Words â run, runâ
appear on the screen. Pans to the whole of Neverland.
Peter pan sprinkling a lost boy (cubby) in pixie dust. Flying away scene from
peter pan. Feet of lost boy hitting sand.
Back to 2nd paragraph
Goes through the characters mentioned like a memory. Back to the room in the
beginning with him looking around at it.
Back to 2nd paragraph but more as a memory.
Pans to a white screen.
7 sections to animate.
2 sections can be avoided by copying it as its just a repeat section
My interpretation of the song is that its telling a story about the lost boys from
peter pan. With this thought I have decided to use those characters and put the
songs lyrics together into a plan of what to animate for the final product. This is
a story board of how I want to do the animation to make the product overall
easier when I actually get to the animation part.
21. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
22. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTION
OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended
outcome
Detailed breakdown of the music track chosen and your
interpretation of it [remember the questions in the
workbook, e.g. pace/mood/tone/structure]
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment
requirements
Include any details that you think [you could use material
from your pitch]
23. PRODUCTION OUTLINE
My product is going to be an animation based off the
story the song is telling. This will basically give a vision
towards what's going on in the story. My intended
outcome is to have a full animation of the song in which
the story is being told. I have decided upon this decision
as the song tells a already known story from somebody
different showing a different perspective. Knowing that
having a animation for it would be a cool idea to give
people a visual on what that other perspective is like.
24. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
25. EQUIPMENT REQUIRED
The equipment I will need to make this animation is all
digital based. This will include a computer with internet
access so I can research poses of the peter pan
characters. This will also include software's like
Photoshop so I can draw and create the animation.
Premier is also needed so I can put the final product
together and put final edits into the product.
These requirements are easy to obtain as in the college
there is a library always open with computers available.
As all my lessons require computers I will always have
one. These options will always be available during
college open times
26. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access,
cost, weather? How will you manage this?
27. LOCATION
Location for filming isnt needed as I will not be filming I
will be animating. As long as the location has computer
access then any location can be used
29. FACILITIES
I will edit my video during lesson time and in the library
free time if needed. The editing process should be the
shortest time process so shouldnât really need that much
time.
30. PERSONNEL
CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each
team members strengths/weaknesses? When are they
available?
CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are
they available? Cost implications? Will you have to feed
them? Transport them?
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you?
31. PERSONNEL
At this very moment there is only myself working on the
product but more help may be used down the line. If
help is needed it would be used for creating some of the
frames during the animation due to having little time and
little options.
34. PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL
PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you âpre-visualiseâ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
ï Pre-visualisation and concept boards
ï Storyboarding
ï Shot list
35. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEPT
BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the âlook & feelâ
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the âmise-en-sceneâ
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:
http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for-
hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
36. STORY BOARD PLAN
This is the plan of the direction I want to animate in:
Starts off with a lost boy (cubby) in a dark room to symbolise
loneliness. Pans towards a window with the man in the moon (peter
pan) pans back to lost boy closing eyes and transitions to a black
shadow flying high. Peter pan shows up from the shadow and say
âpeter pan thatâs what they call me, I promise that youll never be
lonely.â
Pan over to the lost body (cubby) in neverland hanging out with
peter pan in the woods. Transitions to scene of captain hook.
Words â run, runâ appear on the screen. Pans to the whole of
Neverland.
Peter pan sprinkling a lost boy (cubby) in pixie dust. Flying away
scene from peter pan. Feet of lost boy hitting sand.
Back to 2nd paragraph
Goes through the characters mentioned like a memory. Back to the
room in the beginning with him looking around at it.
Back to 2nd paragraph but more as a memory.
Pans to a white screen.
7 sections to animate.
2 sections can be avoided by copying it as its just a repeat section.
38. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
39. STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
ï https://www.storyboardthat.com
ï http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
ï http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and
scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
41. SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.
42. SHOT LIST
I will need for the music video:
Computer
photoshop
Drawing tablet
Drawing tablet pen
Wifi/ internet
44. PRODUCTION GROUP INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested
Joshua Meredith- mobile phone no. +44 7534 635875-
entire stage of production as it is an animation. This is a solo
job therefore I will be doing all stages possible
45. LOCATION INFORMATION
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/premissions
for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including
camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues and suggest
solutions
47. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production
and when you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
48. RISK ASSESSMENT
There is no risk of location as the music video I am doing
doesnât require a location
This makes the process easier in a way as I donât have to
worry about my location being a risk.
49. CONTINGENCY PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
50. CONTINGENCY PLAN
In the images I have ways of simplifying the animation
process but cutting unnecessary bits and making the
animation different to fit the time frame.
I donât have to worry about location, people or areas as
none of that is needed for making an animation. This is a
solo project that doesnât require a location.
51. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Provide an outline of what you will do on which days
during production
You should broadly plan to the following structure:
- 2 weeks pre-production
- 1 week filming [plan for up to 2 days]
- 2 weeks editing [essentially 2 days for every day you
filmed]
52. SCHEDULE
My schedule is to take around 2 weeks to animate and 1
week editing. As the animation is the hardest part it
needs more focus then the editing which should be
straight forward in comparison.
The editing probably wont even take a week so I may
take longer than 2 weeks to animate.
53. CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of
your video must have a completed form
Blank forms are on Blackboard for you to complete and
insert here
54. PERMISSIONS FORMS
I do not need any permissions to film anywhere as that is
not required for my music video as it s an animation.
