2. What to do
• Story boards
• Mind map
• Mood boards
• Aesthetics
• Colour scheme
• Script
• Detail on what it will be
• Layout of how the art installation will look
• production techniques
• Production experiments
• Inspiration
• Editing
• Camera angles
4. Mind map analysis
• I split my initial ideas for a video based project into three sections: a
documentary, an experimental short film and a music video. Doing this
allowed me to think about more ideas for these three ways to stylize my
video.
• I could think of the most ideas for a documentary based around mental
health as this was what I had done my research into as it was my initial
idea.
• I noted that in my music video section I could collaborate with local artists
in york however although this idea is an interesting one that I could
develop in various ways I think that it would be too difficult to find an
artist that would be willing to go along with this or even just a local artist
in general.
• I used the mind map as a way to plan some alternative initial ideas
however I’m still very invested in making a documentary on the issues of
mental health.
5. My finalized Idea
Create a documentary/short film that interviews
artists aged 16-25 about their experiences with
mental health disorders while they create a piece of
art that expresses the experience. I want to create
this as I have connections to people who are willing
to be a part of it and I can provide them with the
materials they need to create the art. I want to
make some really creative and interesting ways to
edit this documentary so that I am making as much
of a statement about the conventions of
documentaries/short films as the artists are about
mental health in the UK/York.
7. Mind map analysis
• In my aesthetic choices I wrote about how I could use the artists painting to create the artistic choice in my
video. I could have the colour scheme of my video be the same as the artists painting and use quick cuts in
my editing if the artist uses quick brush strokes and use longer shots if the artists is taking their time to
carefully paint their work. I think I could also use the sound design and music in my video to match this by
using music that expresses the same feelings as the artist has made in their work. I think that doing this
would make my work more artistic as well as making it easy to get invested in the atmosphere and design
of the artists work
• I noted down some methods I could use while filming to get a variety of shots as well as the best ways to
get my artist to speak openly about their experiences. I would like to use interesting shots such as POVs,
still shots and tracking shots as I think think this would keep the audience engaged.
• In my setting section I listed area’s where I would want to film B-role as I think most of the places I listed
are atmospheric. I want the atmosphere/aesthetic of my video to feel very cathartic.
• I also wrote about directors that have influenced my ideas for this project. I mentioned Werner Herzog as
he has been involved in a few famous documentary style films which I found emotive and interesting. I
included Andrei Tarkovsky as an influence as even though he wasn’t much of a documentary film maker I
think that a lot of the cinematography in his work is atmospheric in the same way that I want the replicate
in my video. I chose the directors Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi a they were directors of Free
Solo (2018) which was the first documentary I had seen that caught my attention purely because of how
ridiculous it seemed that there were people climbing cliff faces with nothing to save them if they fell, I
found the documentary really interesting as it constantly reminded me just how dangerous it was to climb
like that. I want my documentary/short film to approach emotional mental health issues in a way that feels
honest and helpful so watching different documentaries will definitely help me to find the best way to get
these responses from the artist I’ll work with.
8. Art Installation Layout
• If I were to have my project shown as an art installation I would arrange it so that there
would be three screens placed around the room where people could walk around and
listen to the stories separately.
• This layout for an art installation is very basic as the viewer cannot interact with the
screens and the layout isn’t very original however it serves is function to present
information clearly without being to complicated to set up.
• The boards can be arranged into different shapes and layouts to make them look more
visually interesting.
• I think that if I use a different layout it could be a better way to show my creativity in this
project.

• The main way that video projects are presented in art installations is through
projections so there are various ways that projections can be used to merge
both physical and video art.
• I could use projectors in college to create an effect where my video is projected
onto an object relating to the overall theme of my project and film the results
as it could create a really nice looking effect that would link to the clients brief.
• Projections can be used in art in various ways. Videos can be projected onto
models to create the illusion of movement or it can be projected through fabric
or onto buildings or walls. This all creates the effect of movement where there
shouldn’t be.
10. Art Installation Layout
• For my art installation I want to project the video I make onto the
painting that my artist has made, I think that this would be an
artistic way to show the collaboration between me and the artist as
it would create the sense that both the video and the painting are
linked.
• Projecting the video onto the painting would also allow me to make
some really interesting shots that allow the video to interact with
the painting so that the light from the projector traces the brush
strokes (this might not work) it would look like the painting is
lighting up as it is worked on in the video.
• Using this form of projection as my art piece would definitely
elevate my video to a more artistic style which suits the brief of the
client as it would connect the artists painting and my video.
11. For my project I’ve decided to work with an
artist who’s in the same age range as my target
audience as I think this would make their story
more relatable to my audience.
13. B-roll Colour Scheme
Forest area colour scheme Yorks colour scheme
I want the colour scheme of my b-roll to be a mix of natural environments such as rivers,
forests and flowers. I want to mix these shots with footage of places in york and my artist on
their own. I want my B-role to mainly consist of shots that have a different colour scheme to
my main shots as my main shots will have a similar colour palette to my artists painting.

15. Production Experiments
• I wanted to experiment with transitions as
an experiment as it seemed like it’d be a
useful tool to have while making my
project as it would help me make a video
that has seamless cuts between shot to
have some sequences that flow together.
• The finished product came out really well
and it was simple to edit so this is defiantly
something I could include in my video.
• I also made a reversal effect in my video
where I used effects in after effects to
make it look like the video was rewinding in
the style of a VHS tape. This also turned
out surprisingly well and although I
probably won’t use it in this project it
might be useful for future projects.

27. Music
I’m going to create my own music backing track for my short film as it would
mean that I can create an atmosphere that suits the overall tone of my video
without having to worry about using copyrighted music or having non
copyright music that doesn’t suit my video.
Depending on the style of my artists painting I want to use different music for
example if the artist makes a painting that looks serene and picturesque then
I will make my music match this aesthetic by creating a calm and tranquil
track using very few instruments however if my artists chooses to paint
something darker in tone then I will make a track that reflects this mood.
I’ve chosen to make my music like this as I think it would improve the overall
atmosphere of my video as it link the style of both the painting and the video
so there’s no disconnect between what I want the audience to feel and what
my artist wants the audience to feel.
28. Sound effects/ audio
Sound effects I can record while filming
• Mixing paint
• Setting up equipment
• Sounds of nature
• The artist will talk about themselves and any issues
they’ve had regarding mental health
Sound effects I can make
• Brush strokes – record the sound of paper brushing
against the canvas before the canvas is used
• River - pour water
30. Production schedule
week 1
• Tuesday – I will spend the first day of production either editing my
footage or creating my music depending on whether I’ve started
filming at this point although I am planning to film on Monday I
most likely would've finished filming by Tuesday.
• Thursday – I will use Thursday to continue editing my video so that
all the clips are in the right order and are edited to the right length.
• Friday – I will most likely finish ordering and clipping my footage
and start working on any effects and colour grading that I need in
my video.
• At the the end of every day I will make an entry for my production
evaluation.
31. Production schedule
week 2
• Tuesday – I will finish editing the colour grading
and effects in my video and begin working on the
sound effects for the video
• Thursday – On Thursday I’ll add the sound effects
I made into my video and begin creating some
music in garage band that suits the video
• Friday – I will carry on creating the music as it
would most likely take me a while to find and
create a sound that works for the video
32. Production schedule
week 3
• Tuesday – I will finish my music and add it to
my video and then make any final adjustments
to my video if necessary.
• Thursday – I will set up the projector and bring
in the painting and record my art installation
and then edit it to create another video.
• Friday – I will finish creating my art installation
video and look over all of my work to see if
there's anything else to edit.
33. Production schedule
4
• if my production takes longer than I expected
or I run into any issues then I will use the time
from this week to fix any major mistake or
time miscalculations as this is something that
will probably happen at one point. If every
thing turns out fine then I’ll finalize any
adjustments to the visual/audio aspects of my
project either in my art installation video or
my actual video.
