2. GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy – some
sections require you to delete the information on the slide
and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through the
pre-production phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
5. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
6. VIDEO1
TALKING HEADS ONCE IN A
LIFETIME
• In the video it has a sense of comedy as the main singer is
almost pretending to be a preacher and dances in erratic ways
making the viewer see it as comedic.
• The camera angles in the video tend to jump around lots with
lots of crash zooms and close ups of the singer.
• The use of layering clips with multiple versions of the singer add
a crazy kooky effect to the video.
• I think the video and its techniques will reflect well on my video
as id like mine to be a bit comedic and not take itself too
seriously as the song itself isn't meant to be something mopey
or depressing.
7. VIDEO 2
ARCTIC MONKEYS
TRANQUILLITY BASE
HOTEL + CASINO
• This video uses a sort of 60s 70s style to the filming
using retro lights and old cameras to get that old film
look.
• The music video makes itself almost mysterious as you
don’t learn much from it and its like a story happening
in the video.
• This video also has a small subtle comedic element to it
as it uses the old retro style as like a mockery of the
singer and how it seems he's living in the past.
• I feel this will reflect on the video I choose by picking
one with a style I like and would like to change up.
8. VIDEO 3
NEW ORDER
AGE OF CONSENT
• The reason I've put this one up is there isn't really a proper
filmed music video for the song its more of a live music video
and id like to believe id be able to make a better version as they
didn't’t do one themselves
• I think the live music video is a good setting for a music
video and there'd be lots for me to come up with for this
song.
• I would probably have to cut the time down as it’s a fairly
long song so id have to come up with a way to shorten it
down
9. VIDEO 4
GORILLAZ+SLOWTHAI
MOMENTARY BLISS
• The music video for this song incorporates animation mixed with real life
and I know it would be very difficult to animate anything like this but the
idea of using some kind of animation in the the music video seems like it
would be a cool idea not to the scale of this band as they would be
impossible
• I like how goofy parts of it are and how there's a funny side to things
that happen and also how grown up it is as usually animation people
would assume to be childish or for kids
• I think this video helps me think of new ideas with incorporating
something aside from just plain video whether it be some small
animations or props to help make it more watchable or comedic
10. VIDEO 5
METRONOMY
THE LOOK
• This video has been useful in coming up with ideas as its made
me think of using two different styles in one video and
switching between them as in this video there's the clips of the
band playing the song and then all the stop motion parts of the
seagulls and it switches between them making it keep the
attention of the watcher
• I also like how plain the rest of the style is with the cream
backgrounds and the laid back style
• I will take lots of stylistic ideas from this video and its been
useful in the sense of coming up with a theme and using props
and little characters to keep it interesting.
11. POTENTIAL SONGS
The songs that I believe have potential for a good vide
are
• Once in a lifetime by talking heads
• Remember when by wallows
• Four stars out of five by arctic
monkeys
• Tranquility base hotel + casino by
arctic monkeys
12. POTENTIAL
TECHNIQUES
Id like a fairly plain background so it doesn't draw
attention from the main parts
I think I'm almost definitely going to incorporate a sock
puppet of some kind into it instead of using real people
13. CONVENTIONS YOU
PLAN TO USE
I would like to make it a little bit funny as I don’t think I
can make something serious so I'm choosing a song that
isn't too serious or dramatic and making the video
correlate in a way
I'm going to use lots of interesting camera shots in my
video as I like the way they give a feel to the video
14. MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
ideas
Comical
• Funny
camera
angles
• Maybe a
funny
setting/bac
kground
• Using a
puppet or
some
animation
plot
• Was thinking of re
making the whole
video but instead of
real people making
it a sock puppet as
real people would be
too difficult to
manage
Id like to over exaggerate
things already in the original
music video to make it
pretty ridiculous
I'm not going to
completely copy the
original video I'm going
to make changes that
make it recognizable but
15. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
•Mine has the opportunity to be funny if people like it
•It has the opportunity to be unique (hopefully)
•It has the opportunity to be easy to watch wont stress
you out just a bit of fun no drama.
•Has the opportunity to be silly but have a cool style
about it and be visually interesting
•It has the opportunity to see the song differently instead
of how the original video would make you think.
16. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
• I will be filming and doing it alone so it may take more
time?
• I may have to make some things at home to use in my
video like props?
• The restrictions of my idea may be actually fleshing it out
some of what I want may be too difficult for the time I
have or the skills I have with software’s
• The song itself is quite long so I may be restricted in
things to fill up the video with I may need to cut down
the actual song or find a radio edit to help me be able to
have enough to make the video whole
• I may need to expand on my ideas if I do not have
17. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Name of track / name of artist : once in a lifetime/talking
heads
Brief biographical background : released in 1980
Links to other artists :
Genre info : the style of music is new wave and talking
heads were one of the first to be labeled under this style.
18. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
I think what the song is trying to talk about is not
worrying too much and just getting on with life and you
cant change the past. I think its also saying not to let life
rush ahead of you and don’t loose track of what's around
you including people/family and that money isn't
everything and to be happy with what you have.
The style of the song is very upbeat and makes you feel
good while talking about real life problems.
19. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
For my idea id like the take ideas from the song and
make them more literal and funny and instead of in the
real video it’s the lead singer dancing and acting like a
preacher id like to make it a sock puppet and have it act
out what the lyrics are saying.
I'm going to have it set up like the original video with a
fairly plain white background and then have all the
things happen the the puppet and have things going on
in the background.
21. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
22. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
What I plan to make is a spoof of the original video
where the lyrics are taken literally and its all acted out by
a sock puppet. I'm going to have things in the lyrics
happen to it like near the end there's a lyric that says
“here comes the twister” and id like to make a funny
cutout of a tornado/twister that would scare the puppet
the idea is for it to look homemade and not serious so
I'm going to use a lot of handmade props when I film it
that I can make at home.
I'm going to break it up into having one repeated part
which will be during the chorus where it’s the same lyrics
so ill just replay a certain section of filming during that
part.
23. LOCATIONS
Location one: my home. I wont need to travel for this one and I
can film the majority of the parts I need in and around my
house as ill be using a white background for a lot of it.
Location two: a field in my village. This one will be a bit of a
walk for me but as I'm filming it all on my phone I wont have
much to carry or worry about.
The weather could be a problem but either way it doesn’t
matter in terms of the footage its more just if I get wet or if my
phone does.
Location three: college. I need to use the college computers to
edit all my work together I can get here easily so I don’t need to
worry about travel.
24. EQUIPMENT
Equipment list
1.College software including premier, Photoshop,
PowerPoint. This is only available when I'm on site at
college and in lessons.
2.My phone to use as a camera for filming the actual music
video can use whenever I need to film at home or out.
3.I will need props and bits from home some I will need to
make myself this I can do at home in my own time after
college before I film.
4. If I needed to borrow a camera from college which I
doubt I will but I can ask to book one out if necessary.
25. FACILITIES
Ill be editing my video completely at college as I wont
likely be able to get the software on my computer at
home so ill have to focus getting my editing done while
I'm in lesson a college and try do as much as I can at
home with the other bits like filming.
26. PERSONNEL
As I'm the only one filming and making the
video I'm the only one in the crew I'm not
partaking I the video except for my hand as I'm
going to be making the main character a sock
puppet.
I wont need to worry about getting people
together to help me film or act in my video
which means I can get a lot of It done faster
and not worry about people not turning up or
not being able to help.
27. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
For props I'm going to make a simple sock puppet as the
main character of the video and I'm going to use lots of
other little cardboard cutouts of things like one I'm going
to have is the earth and some waves as the song
mentions lots of water and days going by I'm also going
to have a cardboard cutout of a tornado/twister.
1. Cardboard cutouts
2. Sock puppet
3. Blank white wall for filming against
29. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
30. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:
http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for-
hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
31.
32. CONCEPT BOARD
A lot of what I've collected on my concept board is to
remind me what I need to put in my video and help me
keep a scheme of what colors and style of things I want
like the cream colors are for the background and the
earth ,tornados and waves are all of props I'm going to
make to cutout and make little scenes.
There are also some screenshots of the original video fro
the song which I'm basically using a similar style to spoof
the original video but just adding more tings like a
different location instead of just the white background
and making it more of a joke.
33. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
34. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
35. BREAKDOWN OF
SECTIONS
I'm splitting down the song and my video into 7
sections being 6 verses, chorus in 2 parts and
the ending the chorus will repeat itself a few
times. I'm making a lot of sections as the song
is long and I don’t want to make it confusing
with not enough sections I will add more if
necessary while filming as I can just come back
and edit it if I need but it will all be mapped out
so I know exactly what I need to put In all
parts.
36. SECTION 1
Verse 1
And you may find yourself
Living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself
In another part of the world
And you may find yourself
Behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
With a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, well
How did I get here?
For this section of the video I'm going to have the puppet
pretend to be walking and have cutout with drawing on of like a
shack and the world and a car pop up in the background while
he's walking so what's being said in the lyrics is appearing
literally behind the scene. Its going to be a fairly close shot for
this as theres not going to be much in the back except my
cutouts
37. SECTION 2
Chorus 2 parts
The chorus itself repeats a lot of times during the song with the same
lyrics which is “letting the days go by let the water hold me down” so
I'm going to have a section of video that plays every time the chorus
starts and repeat it through the whole song it does vary in lyrics slightly
in some parts but shouldn’t effect the video.
I'm going to have it where there's cut outs of waves crashing on top of
the sock puppet and when it mentions under the rocks and stones have
big boulders fall on him.
This will have a normal sized small shot where everything's close
together so you an see whats happening without having to look around
the shot too much
Letting the days go by, let the water
hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing
underground
Into the blue again after the money's
gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing
underground
Letting the days go by, let the water
hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing
underground
Into the blue again into silent water
Under the rocks and stones, there is
water underground
38. SECTION 3
And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large
automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful
house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful
wife!
Verse 3
Ill have a similar section to the 1st verse where there will
be cutouts of the car and house bobbing up and the
puppet pushing them away like he doesn't’t want them
and have the puppet looking around like its unhappy
39. SECTION 4
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Verse 4
For this one as there's not much I can do visually I think ill
just have some swirling effect happening to the puppet to
give a strange effect and then it snaps back to normal in
he next verse I was also thinking if possible I could make
the camera angles change while its swirling like flipping it
upside down or on its side to give it a weird look this shot
will stay close to help the swirly effect and make people
40. SECTION 5
Water dissolving and water
removing
There is water at the bottom of the
ocean
Under the water, carry the water
Remove the water at the bottom of
the ocean!
Water dissolving and water
removing
Verse 5
For this section as its talking about removing
water and carrying it I'm going to have the
puppet lift up the cutouts of the waves and
chuck the water around as it says in the lyrics
and have waves flowing around over him.
This will all be in a normal ranged shot as
41. SECTION 6
You may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
You may ask yourself
Where does that highway go to?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right? Am I wrong?
And you may say yourself
"My God! What have I done?"
Verse 6
For the part where it talks about the house this time instead of
a cutout of a house ill use a real one and for the lyric where
does that highway go to ill have a clip of a road near me that is
long and have the puppet looking down it as this section of
lyrics is talking about what the person singing has been doing
with their life I'm going to make the puppet look very confused
and annoyed at what's happening to it this gain will keep the
42. SECTION 7
Ending
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Look where my hand was
Time isn't holding up
Time isn't after us
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Letting the days go by
Same as it ever was
And here the twister comes
Here comes the twister
Letting the days go by (same as it ever was)
Same as it ever was (same as it ever was)
Letting the days go by (same as it ever was)
Same as it ever was
Once in a lifetime
Let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by
The ending is probably the longest of the
sections but I'm going to put a lot into it for
the beginning I'm going to do the same
swirly effect but I'm going to have a cutout
of a clock in the background so it links
within the lyrics about time and ads another
layer to the background to keep I interesting
this will be a fairly close shot to keep things
focused on the middle.
Then it will settle out as it says here comes
the twister and then I'm going to have a
cutout of a tornado chasing the puppet I the
middle of a field which I will make look very
DIY and funny this will be a big wide shot
with lots in it as I need to fi all the
background in.
For the very last part it will end with the
waves covering the puppet and then it’s the
43. STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
https://www.storyboardthat.com
http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and
scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
45. SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.

49. LOCATION INFORMATION
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/premissions
for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including
camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues and suggest
solutions
50. LOCATIONS
Location 1: my home
Most of the filming will be in my home in my conservatory as there
is lots of natural light for filming I am also going to set up my
photography lights to give me a brighter scene if it’s a gloomy day.
The camera is going to be set up central to the big white wall in my
conservatory so I get a nice blank background for my scene so
everything is nice and fitted in a small white square.
Location 2 : a field next to my village
There is a big field near my home where I will be filming the
outdoor section of my video with the tornado I will be allowed to
film there as it’s a common dog walking public footpath so I won't
need to get permission. The camera will be facing out into the
open so I can get a big wide shot and make my prop of a tornado
look like its huge and sweeping across the field. The only issues
with this location is the weather may be a setback on the days and
my props may get wet but I can use certain days to my advantage
to make sure the timing is right
51. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production
and when you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
52. RISK ASSESSMENT
location Risk level danger that
could occur
How to avoid
My home low Could slip or
fall while
filming
Be careful while
working don’t mess
around
Village field low Could
encounter
people that
don’t want
filming may get
angry
Don’t film people
without their consent
or just wait until the
scene is clear
college medium Busy college so
could get in the
way and
knocked over
while working
Be aware of
surroundings and
people working in the
same areas as you
53. CONTINGENCY
PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
54. CONTINGENCY PLAN
Technical: hopefully not a lot can go wrong as I'm not using much except for some
stand lights which I know how to use properly if not I will be able to manage without or
use a lighter room I'm using my phone to record so I wont have to worry about getting a
camera.
Location: the location is mainly in my home except for one scene which is in a field but
if I cant get what I want outside I will finish it all inside my house as it makes sense to
keep it all to one style anyway
Personnel: I only have one person worry about helping me with the video and they live
with me so I wont have to worry about crew not showing up and me being able to film it
myself so I'm okay if worse came to worse I could ask one of my parents to help me
film.
Organisation: I have made a script and everything is all broken u into easy parts for me
to film in clips so im organised as much as I've planned nothing should go wrong with
the filming as its all pretty simple and I don’t have lots to manage in terms of people
and going places
55. PRODUCTION
SCHEDULE
Your schedule should budget a total of 10 hours for
production, that is for the filming and editing of your
project.
You should plan when you’re filming and how you intend
to use the in class days on your timetable/class schedule
56. SCHEDULE
Filming I am going to give myself 3 hours as I am only
filming short clips and I have everything needed to get it
all set up and ready and filmed quickly.
I'm giving myself 2 hours for making my props as I have
to make all the cardboard cut-outs and make them
useable in my video
Then I'm giving myself the rest of my time to edit and
finish my video this should be enough time to get it all
done if everything runs to plan the class days will be the
only time I'll be able to edit my video as I can't get
the software needed at home but I can do all my filming
at home on my home and make all my props at home
which gives me all my lessons to use the software.
