2. Process: split
In this production experiment, I tested out the split effect where I could merge two clips
together to make them one. What I did for this was I layered the two clips and took the
top layer. I used the crop effect on the top layer. The crop tool allows you to delete pieces
of the clip. I did this on the top layer so the bottom layer can be seen. I wouldn’t use the
crop tool on the bottom layer as it will still not be shown on the screen. When I did this, it
created a harsh line which made the shot look unrealistic and badly edited if I left it like
that. so I used the edge feather. The edge feather blurs out that harsh line in order for
the shot to be smooth and realistic. Overall I think this effect worked out well and created
a good shot. I used this YouTube tutorial to create this effect.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djFymNOGMA4
I really liked this tutorial because the creator made the tutorial easy to follow so I was
able to understand what I was doing. He also chose the simpleist way to do this effect so
it was quick to create this effect and overall this tutorial was really helpful when I was
doing my project experiment.
3. Process: color grading
Also in this production experiment, I tried out color grading. I will need to do this for
my horror short film to darken the piece. To do this I first used a RHB curve. When
applying this curve four colored lines in a grid will show like the one in the image. You
can then move these lines around to change the hue saturation in the shot. I have
changed mine so it looks like a darker blue/ grey color. I then use the noise effect. I
used this to add a bit of static to the image. Its not clear to see on the image because I
only had to add a bit to get a good quality. If I used too much noise then it will look
like an analogue tv which is not the look I'm going for. I then used the tint to the
image. The tint effect reduces the image to two colors based off its light and dark
colors in the shot. I again only had to use a small amount of tint or the image would go
black and white. Overall I think the image looks good but it wasn’t the look I was going
for. The tutorial I used is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diKnt6WbEyQ
The tutorial I used was very helpful when creating this piece. It did do everything the
creator did and they both pretty much turned out the same. However, when I come to
do my final project, I may have to look into more videos and the style this creator used
wasn’t the style that I am going for in my short film.
4. process
For this production experiment, I have created a
poster to advertise my short film. I have used
skills that I've learned during my print rotation to
create this piece. I cut out the inside of the
mirror and put a creepy background behind to
show what the reflection of the mirror is. I did
have a creepy girl in the mirror as well but I took
it out because it didn’t fit with the color scheme
of the poster and I did cut it out bad. I also
thought that it would be more creepy for the
audience to think about what things are lying in
the mirror. The only thing I would change is the
white text near the bottom of the page because
it blends into the floor.
5. process
• The first thing I did for this poster is focus on the mirror and its reflection. The original image
had a plain grey reflection and didn't give the image the creepy vibe I am going for. So I
used the selection tool to cut out the interior of the mirror and deleted it so is a gap in the
mirror to put a different reflection it the frame. I originally had an image of a creepy
bedroom as the reflection but it didn’t work with the mirror due to the different colors of
the walls and the lighting of the two images. I found this image of an abandoned house
and put it as the reflection and it works better than the previous image.
6. process
Whenever I tried a different color, it would either not
stick out and would blend in again or it wouldn’t go
with the color scheme of the poster. So what I decided
to do was to add a black boarder to the white text to
make sure it stood out but didn’t blend into the
background of the poster. I did this by adding the
stroke effect and turning the color to black. I only
added a small amount of the effect because if I put
too much of it on it would look too bulky. I like how I
did the title for the poster and I am definitely going to
use it in my short film
7. Reflection
With these production experiments I have learned many techniques that I could use in my final product.
Looking through what I've learned, I am definitely going to use the cloning effect because they product
would look better if there were two identical people in the same shot rather than creating two shots where
in one is the good twin and in the other shot is the bad twin. I found the technique very easy to do and I
enjoyed leaning something new. With the color grading technique, I liked the way the effect turned out.
However I didn’t know how to get that specific color grade to be on ever single shot which effected the
experiment because in each shot, the color would look different. Luckily there is a way to get that effect on
every shot needed by creating a layer and if I were to use this in the project I would make sure id do it
properly to make sure that the effect looked good on every shot.
