June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

1. Tell me in no more than20 words, what is your
FMP idea?
An artistic short film named invincible and it
deals with the topic of alcohol and excessive
drinking
Why have youdecided to makeit? My video is aimed towardsteenagers and young
adultsand thistopic is a very serious topic that
needs to be addressedmore tothis age range.
What aboutyourproject makesit importantto
you?
The subject that I havechosen is importanttome
because myself anda lot of other people I know
who are under the legal of drinkingstill go to
parties andclubs and drink. I have seen the states
me and otherpeople get intoat these parties, soI
think it is key to aim at this demographicthat
alcohol can be dangeroussowhen people do turn
18 and startgoing o nights outdrinking, I’m
hopingafter thisproject, they knowhow to be
responsible.
Outline someof the initial influences onyour
idea/work and somepotential research targets
(remember, research isn’t justa paperbased
activity)
Someof the best influencers aboutalcohol and
substanceabusehave struggledwith it
themselves. A top story was RobinWilliams, he
struggledwith alcoholismin the 1980’s, butafter
becominga father andthe deathsof other
celebrities from the same or a similar natureto his
problem, Williams began to ‘clean up’. Robin
Williams did amazingthings for the film industry
with his ‘outthere’ personality andcharacter roles
he broughtto life in the silver screen. However,
he unfortunately died in 2014. Oneof my
research targets is to find out the emotionaland
physicaleffects of alcohol, not only on the drinker,
buton the people aroundthem.
What effect do youwant to haveon your
audience when they see yourproject?
When my audience see my video, I want them to
realise thatthis subject is importantto
understandandthe subject needsto be
addressedmore. I hope they have an emotional
effect onthe piece as the subject has caused
loadsof people to cause damageto themselves
andthose aroundthem.
Describe the tone/mood/styleofyourproject
[which productiontechniques/characteristicsare
youemploying?]
The tone of my project is going to be quite dark
andserious tonesbecause the subject is serious,
andI want to get the message across
appropriately. The moodwill startoff happy to
represent the character before his/her substance
abuseand the videowill progressively turninto a
dark and sadmoodas the character spiralsout of
control. The style of the project is artistic.
2. This initial document provides you with an opportunity to reflect on, review and summarise
your progress and achievements through the first 7 units of the qualification and what you
plan to create in your final project. Think about what you know now, and what it means to
you, compared with what you knew and could do before you started the course, and how
this has influenced your choice of pathway and your FMP.
Why have youdecided to makeyour project in
this style?
I havestarted to makemy film an artistic style
because this genre can allow me to be creative
with my techniques, shotstyleand visualeffects. I
want the moodandtone to be dark and a sad
topic because I want my audience to see that I
take thissubject seriously andI don’twantthem
to think I am pokingfunor portrayingthe subject
wrong as someonewho couldwatch the video
who is or knowssomeonewho is going through
an alcohol related issue make takeoffence or be
upsetwith the way I have donethings.
