A strategy to make Geography a leading department at Priory School by:

Objectives
Geography @ Priory should:
1. Further developing a co-constructed curriculum that motivates and
inspires pupils.
2. Improve the quality of teacher interventions linked to progress and
attainment data.
3. Develop a pedagogy that supports the use of mobile devices in learning.
4. Provide opportunities for young people to engage with curriculum and
whole school change.
5. Embedding the language of Rights, Respects and Responsibilities

  • 1. Priory School Specialist Sports College Geography @ Priory Plan 2011-2012 A strategy to make Geography a leading department at Priory School by: Aims 1. Leading Enrichment • Creating actively engaged pupils in an actively engaged school. 5. Leading Support • Socially and emotionally aware staff and pupils Objectives Geography @ Priory should: 1. Further developing a co-constructed curriculum that motivates and inspires pupils. 2. Improve the quality of teacher interventions linked to progress and attainment data. 3. Develop a pedagogy that supports the use of mobile devices in learning. 4. Provide opportunities for young people to engage with curriculum and whole school change. 5. Embedding the language of Rights, Respects and Responsibilities

Target : All lesson evaluations completed in Geography are judged Good or Outstanding. Task Who When Resources Update June 2012 Evaluate and revise Key Stage 3 Curriculum so that it prepares students for success at GCSE and beyond. Student Curriculum Leaders to evaluate and co-create a wider range of the curriculum. DRg, Sat, JDb, Awe JDb Autumn term – Year 9 Spring Term – Year 8 Summer Term – Year 7 Summer Term Curriculum meeting time. PPA Time Day off timetable with students and JDb Changes to curriculum time will be addressed during away day. Y7-9 evaluated In progress. Potential SCLs identified through pupil survey in May 2012 by DRg and passed to JDb Evaluate GCSE textbook and other resources for effectiveness. Investigate other options if needed. JDb Summer term 2012 Possible bit for replacement textbooks. Decision not to buy a GCSE textbook at present due to potential impact of 2015 changes Write GCSE Economic Geography Scheme of Work. Observe each other teaching and share good practice / pedagogic risks All Aim to see each other teach once per term and feed back in Curriculum Meetings. Use curriculum meetings to share successes and risks including lessons learned. Occasional Cover needed if staff wish to see a particular feature. Anticipate max 6 lessons in total to cover. Curriculum time off site to inspire in Summer Term (July) Done well in the Autumn term; peer assessment of marking between teachers in place for summer term; curriculum meetings allow time for sharing pedagogic risks and success but the department is still relatively poor at sharing resources Staff to take a pro-active continuous ‘drip’ approach to CPD by engaging with the wider geography community and reflecting using Weblogs DRg, JDb, Sat Ongoing. Using Curriculum Meetings to feedback. Access to ICT during PPA time. Support with travel / accommodation for conferences / events Whole department engaged in CPD across the Geography Community. Target: GCSE A*-C results improve by at least 13% in 2012 with a reduced residual Task Who When Resources June 2012 update Ensure early contact with parents when LUCY data suggests below target progress. Focus on KS4 and Yr 9 DRg JDb SAt Ongoing. LM and NQT meetings should always start by focusing on pupil progress Better access to confidential telephone location. LUCY Data including residual. Better INSET training for staff in the use of data. Logging incidents using PARS neutral. DRg has a much clearer picture of intervention across the department (including the use of Google Intervention Doc) Intervention forms an integral part of Curriculum Meetings DRg to lead Curriculum Meetings Curriculum Meeting time. Accurate, timely data Use of Google Doc to track intervention to continue . SISRA and data conversations fully embedded. Staff understand the data process. DRg as CL has a very clear overview of KS4, KS3 working on. Improve the use of Marking a pupil feedback. Key stage 4 pupils should get 1:1 feedback at least once a term. Curriculum meetings will focus upon quality of marking once per half term. Feedback 5’s being used to develop student responses to constructive feedback. Assessment portfolios to be introduced in Sept 2012 to provide clear evidence of progression. Some use of Priory Cloud to support learning of those absent from lessons, but not consistent. Task Who When Resources BBC School report. Identify a group of year 8 students to take part in BBC School report, creating a contribution that attracts attention from the city JDb March 2012 After School time, cameras, green screen, I Can Present Software. Done, using link between Priory geography and Action Stations. Students to Olympic Park and Geocaching news on South Today. Working with some of the most challenging students and improving engagement. Plans to extend next year to involve more departments and students (using JDb possible link with Careers role) Dysarticulate. Allow all of Year 7 to participate in an on-site mock up of the Dysarticulate project linking to our place. Full scale event to take part with the University of Portsmouth linking to Our Place SAt / JDb Spring Term Meeting space (new link with Action Stations could be explored here) Done Olympic Geocaching Project.
