1. Unit Plan: Habitats
Day 5: Desert Habitat
Analyze Learners:
The students in my third grade class are between the ages of eight and nine years old. The class consists
of 25 students, 14 boys and 11 girls who are all at grade level. 2 of the students have diagnosed ADD.
State Objectives:
The students in my third grade class that are between the ages of eight and nine years old, 2 of which
have diagnosed ADD, will be able to identify what the desert habitat is and certain characteristics of the
habitat, like plants and animals, by using a classroom blog, Smart Board, SecondLife, and looking at the
classroom Facebook. This will be done with 95% accuracy.
Select Methods, Media, and Materials:
My students will goes to the classroom blog, and look at all of my posts. Then they will post a comment
on one of the posts.
My students will then go, with my guidance, to the interactive desert area in SecondLIfe that I created.
That way I know that it is safe for my students to use.
After this, they will go to the class Facebook page and we will look at my links and videos about the
desert habitat.
Utilize resources:
Preview: I will make sure that all of the classroom laptops are completely charged a turning on properly.
I will make sure that I have all of my links to websites. I will make sure the SecondLife program is on all
the computers.
Prepare Materials- I will make sure I have everything that I need to complete my lessons for the day.
Desks will be facing forward so everyone can see the Smart Board and laptops will be available. The
classroom Facebook page will already be loaded up.
Prepare Environment- I will make sure that I have all of my notes with me when my lesson starts, and
that the laptops are ready. Each student will have a laptop available to them. The Smart Board will be on
with SecondLife projected on it.
Prepare Students- I will ask my students to think about the desert and why they think that certain
animals cannot live there. This way they will be thinking critically about it.
2. Provide the Learning Experience: For this day of the unit we will be discussing the desert habitat. We will
first go to the blog that I made for my students about some specifics of the desert habitat. They will then
comment on one of the posts that I have made. Then, with my supervision, I will take my students into
the SecondLife interactive desert area that I have made. It has many different things that you can look at
about the desert habitat. Then, we will go to the classroom Facebook page and review links, videos, and
posts about the desert’s animals and plants. After my students have completed this, they will have time
to work in their groups for one last time. At the end of the lesson, my children were to give a group
presentation about the habitat they were assigned at the beginning of the week. They must include an
editing digital imaging picture and a Voki about their habitats. Making a Glogster for your project was
optional and extra credit.
Require learner participation:
To make sure all of my students participate, I will set up a reward for them to want to participate. I will
give them a piece of candy of their choice at the end of the day. If they participate in discussion actively
and work hard on their group projects, then we will present them. At the end of the week after we have
given presentations, we will watch a movie during free time if the students have stayed focused all
week.
Evaluate and Revise:
Student will be evaluated on their presentations at the end of the unit. The edited picture, Voki, and
Glogster, if there is one, will be graded also.
