1. All About Electricity Unit Plan
Thursday
Analyze the Learner
My class is a fourth grade class of 24 students-- 13 boys and 11 girls.
• 14 of my students are white, 7 are African American, and 3 are
Asian.
• One student has Asperger’s, four have ADHD, and one has
dyslexia.
• Two students are gifted learners.
State the Objectives
By the end of the day, my students will evaluate how they use electricity in their
everyday lives, with95% of the learners finishing the lesson proficient on the
topic.
Select the Methods, Media, and Materials
We will use Photo Shop and pictures of rooms in normal houses for an activity,
Zello and Twitter for a scavenger hunt, and Art Bot for a reading activity. We will
also need iPads, the Smart Board, FaceBook, blogger, and computers.
Utilize Media and Materials
The students will use Photo Shop to remove all the items in a picture of a regular,
modern room that use electricity. We will have a scavenger hunt where I will
post items that use electricity through out our school. I will Tweet the clues to the
scavenger hunt items. Students will use Zello to communicate while the search
for these items. I will be posting students work on our class Facebook, and
students will be presenting their Extra Credit assignments from the blog. Our Art
Bot will be part of a related reading assignment.
Require Learner Participation
During our reading class we will read a story about how Ben Franklin allegedly
discovered electricity with a key and a kite during a lightening storm. I will show
them my Ben Franklin Art Bot and we will discuss all the things we could not do
in Franklin’s time without electricity. We will begin science class by talking about
what we have learned about electricity. Students can present their extra credit
assignments (which are quick 5-minute-or-less demonstrations) to aid our review.
Then, we will talk about all the things we have that use electricity. Students will
then individually, use Photoshop to remove the items in a picture that use
electricity. Finally, we will divided our class in half. One half will stay in the room
to watch the Twitter Feed on the Smart Board. The other group will be searching
the school for these items. The two teams of students will communicate using
Zello.
2. Evaluate and Revise
I will assess students who present extra credit assignments presentations to see
what they have learned throughout our weeklong study. I will assess my class as
a whole by what they remove from their pictures and what they contribute to our
discussion about how we use electricity in our everyday lives.
