1. Friday ASSURE
A-Analyze the Learner:
I will be teaching a 5th grade class in a public school of 22 students: 13 girls and 9
boys. 90% of the class is White, 8% is African American, and 2% is Latino. Overall,
these children come low/middle income families, and are between the ages of 10
and 11 years old.
S-State Objectives:
My fifth grade class will demonstrate their understanding of the end of the
Holocaust after experimenting with secondlife, reading a blog, and posting on our
class Facebook page by the end of the day with 100% accuracy.
S-Selecting Methods, Materials, and Media:
To ensure successful learning in my class, I will utilize many different methods to
deliver the key elements of this lesson, including:
Secondlife: Students will create a second life avatar which we will use to
tour the Holocaust Museum.
Blog: As a class, we will read and discuss a blog about the end of the
Holocaust
Facebook: I will post a question on Facebook for students to answer on
their own.
Computer lab: I will reserve the computer lab to provide computer access
to all the students.
U- Utilize Media and Materials:
Before class, I will access the blog we will be reading to have it ready for class time.
I will also post the question for students to answer the day before on the class
Facebook, so that it will be ready when the students need to access it. I plan to
reserve the school computer lab, so that students will have access to the computers
for using SecondLife and accessing the class Facebook. Before instructing the class
to make their own avatar, I will lay some ground rules for using Second Life and
explain how to behave responsibly while using the application.
2. R-Require Learner Participation:
To engage student participation I will begin the class by reading a blog to students
about the end of the Holocaust, and then initiate a class discussion where I will
require student participation. We will then proceed to the computer lab where
students will be advised to access the class Facebook and to answer the question
posted to our page. Once the students have answered the question, they will be
instructed to create their own avatar on Secondlife using a completely made up
name. We will then, all together, travel to the Holocaust Museum and explore.
Students will be able to go on their own and explore the museum and discover what
all it has to offer. Once we return to class, the students will get with their groups and
present their newspapers they created to the rest of the class.
E- Evaluate and Revise:
I will evaluate learner progress by:
Assessing student presentations of the newspaper they created as a group
earlier in the week.
Evaluating the responses students post on the class Facebook page.
Facilitating class discussions and noting the conversations going on.
Monitoring student actions on Second Life.
