1. Wednesday - Habitats
A - Analyze Learners
Teaching to a second grade class about the zoo with 7 boys, 8 girls, 11 white, 3 African-
American, and 1 Latino. Three students in the class have mild to severe ADHD
(attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
S - State Objectives
My 2nd grade classroom will be able to demonstrate their understanding of the natural
habitats of the zoo animals that can be found in the world by completing the “Habitats”
portion of the “Animal Expert” WebQuest assignment with 90% accuracy after showing
them a YouTube video, created by me, that features the five main habitats and showing
a Photoshopped image, also created by me, that shows many different animals in one
area, or habitat.
S - Select Methods, Media, & Materials
Methods
While sitting on the rug in the classroom, students will watch my YouTube video that
presents information about five different habitats around the world and what animals
you may find in them. After watching the YouTube video, my Photoshopped image will
be shown to the class. Students will examine the image and tell me which animals from
that image belong in that habitat and which do not. Then, students will go to the
computers and continue their research to complete the “Habitat” portion of the
WebQuest assignment to become an “Animal Expert” on three animals.
Media
Media that will be used:
• Audio (voice)
• YouTube Video
• Still Image
• Computers
2. Materials
Materials will be obtained by working with what is already in the classroom and what I
will be able to get myself from a store, if needed.
Materials will include:
• Computers
• Photoshopped Image
U - Utilize Media & Materials
Preview the Materials
I will preview my YouTube video to ensure it still works properly and the audio will be
loud enough for all students to hear. Computers will be checked to ensure that
everything is in working order before use during the lesson, for completing necessary
research, and continuing the WebQuest assignment.
Prepare the Materials
I will ensure that the YouTube video is ready to be presented and that the
Photoshopped image is clear and clean. Also, I will make sure that all computers
needed for students to complete research and continue the WebQuest assignment are
in working order.
Prepare the Environment
The classroom will still be set up with the desks arranged in a “U” shape so that there
will be plenty of room for sitting on the rug while viewing the YouTube video and viewing
the Photoshopped image. This arrangement of the desks also ensures that all students
will have a good view of the materials presented to them and will allow my observation
of their understanding to be more easily seen.
Prepare the Learners
Before showing the YouTube video, I will ask students to tell me what they remember
about the animals from the previous lesson. I will prepare my students by informing
them of what will be expected of them and the activities they will be completing during
the rest of the week. I will also explain to them that I will be observing them throughout
the week to evaluate their understanding.
3. Provide the Learning Experience
I will use the previously mentioned methods throughout the lesson to provide a learning
experience for my students. While presenting all activities, I will make sure to have a
clear voice, use eye contact, use appropriate gestures and visuals, and use positive
reinforcement to keep my students interested and engaged in their learning experience.
R - Require Learner Participation
I will require all of my students to participate in all activities relating to the lesson. For
the students with the mild to severe ADHD, I will have them sit towards the front of the
class when viewing the YouTube video and photoshopped image. To avoid distractions,
time spent on each activity will last from 12 to 18 minutes to help to not overwhelm the
students and to keep them focused.
E - Evaluate & Revise
Before
To determine what the students already know about the zoo animals natural habitats, I
will ask students a few questions such as “Besides in the zoo, where would a lion be
found in the world?” and “Do you know what the word tundra means?” This will be done
individually to give me a starting point for each student’s beginning knowledge.
During
Throughout the lesson, I will observe the students to evaluate how they are doing during
the activities, mostly through their participation. I will make notes about concerns or
positive things I see with each student and work accordingly with them going forward.
After
At the end of the day, I will visit each student individually and have them demonstrate
their knowledge by showing me their completed WebQuest which includes the
“Classifications,” “Diet,” and “Habitats” of three different animals they became an
“Animal Expert” on. After final evaluations, I will ask the class as a whole if they enjoyed
the activities and then ask what they enjoyed the most and least. This will show me
what I need to revise for teaching this subject in the future.
