MH ACROSS CULTURES
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about and
explore mental health in multiple ways.
In just a few words, please share:
How have you experienced the concept of "mental health" within your
own cultural communities?
● Stoic - just keep pushing through and pretend it doesn’t exist
● We don’t acknowledge it in the Black community, swept under the rug or ignored
● I feel like in Christianity it is looked down upon a lot
● I think mental health struggles especially for men is something they aren’t supposed
to talk about their issues
● I’m lucky, my family has been open to talking about struggles
● I was not allowed to talk about mental health growing up
● You are Mom-shamed for getting your kids help with mental health
● We try and teach out kids how to use coping skills and being open about feelings
● Not allowed to talk about it, they’re seen as “crazy” and “selfish”
● Mental health was something you just have to push down because “everyone’s life is
hard”
● Allowing children to feel their big emotions and getting “looks”
● I’ve been told that sharing your feelings about mental health makes you “weak”
● Perceived as weakness
● I get told frequently “you need help” or “need to chill” instead of asking how I”m doing
