MH ACROSS CULTURES
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about and explore
mental health in multiple ways. In just a few words, please share: How
have you experienced the concept of "mental health" within your own
cultural communities?
● Lazy, your fault
● Shameful
● Taboo
● Outcast
● Weakness
● My Mexican culture often dismisses mental health, that it’s selfish
● Embarrassing
● If we don’t talk about it, it’s not happening
● Attention-seeking
● Living in a Hispanic household being told you’re okay… playing it off
● That person’s fault
● Minimized
● Awkward to talk about
● Not real
● A curse
● Downplayed, ignored, characterized as over sensitivity
● You’re being too dramatic
● A choice
● It’s all in your head

How does stigma feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Shameful
● Isolating
● Lonely
● Not good enough
● Uncomfortable
● Self-hatred
● Keeps you closed up
● Scary
● Like someone stepping on you and forcing you to stay down
● Alone
● Silenced
● Powerless
● Suppressing
● Guilty
● Not being understood

What makes it difficult
to reach out for help?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Admitting you need help
● No know who to go to
● Being hurt
● Fear of appearing weak
● Feel like no one else could understand
● Culture
● Trapped, fear, insurance
● People you go to blow off your concerns
● Fear of people’s perceptions
● Afraid we’ll get kicked off a team or a role
● Feeling overwhelmed about the process that will heal you
● The process of finding a therapist that you connect with is also so exhausting
● “Suck it up, be tough!”
● “It’s your fault - what did you do to bring this upon you?”
● It’s a stage you’re going through
● Never felt safe to verbalize feelings
● “It’s all in your head, just get over it, think positive!”
● Others worrying about you
● It takes a lot to navigate the mental health syystem

What did you think? How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● I think it depicted the hopelessness, questioning, confusion,
struggle really well
● Overwhelming
● I wanted to hug them both, tell them they are loved
● Heavy, sad
● Reminds me to be kind always because you don’t know what
others go through
● Overwhelming
● It felt very informative, bringing direct perspective
● Feels good to see a visual of someone else going through
something I go through often
● I wanted to help them a lot
● Ugh that is the worst feeling, lots of empathy toward them
● I think about my daughter, would never want her to be by
herself
● Empathetic and understood
● There are so many people that are going through this
● Just made me think of how much people are experiencing this
even more so during a pandemic
● Seeing them side by side was very powerful
● It felt dark and cold

How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth

● This one seemed very upbeat/positive, after he made it through the
valley of darkness, he’s on the brighter side

skill to deal with other issues
● Always surprised how someone who seems successful on the
outside can struggle on the inside
● Are these films available to watch again
