Characters with mental illness
are portrayed as…
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Stigmatized at times
● And conversely, empowered at times
● misunderstood, seen as ill as opposed to experiencing
life from a perspective different than the norm
● Stereotyped a lot of the times in my experience. Most
of the shows I've watched haven't done their research.
● Anxious

MH ACROSS CULTURES
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about and explore mental health in multiple ways.
In just a few words, please share:
How have you experienced the concept of "mental health" within your own cultural communities?
● As a young person, we kept quiet about it
● I've been blessed with a family thatVery understanding and
● acknowledged but not attended to
● We never spoke about it
● Not discussed and not trusted
● It is stigmatized. From the cultural aspect, you don't tell "other people your business."
● Family is still learning. Did not grow up speaking about it
● Lots of shame behind having issues
● My brother suffered from mental issues for over 20 years and my parents supported him
fully. He did lose a lot of friends,
● In my home, as a psych major raised by parents with mental health struggles, I raise my kids
with a mental wellness mindset. We practice coping skills and all utilize therapy and focus on
our social and emotional well being.
● In the Haitian culture its non-existent. If you’re struggling you pray about it.
● Lots of dismissive statement. "You'll be fine. It will go away."
● mental health/illness related to biology, we don't well enough consider issues as reflecting
psychological/spiritual dis-ease in the US
● He said he would of been homeless if they had not helped him.
● No awareness or acknowledgement of mental health when young but now with knowledge
and having so many living with mental illness there is a supportive environment and
recognition of support.
● My husband and I are raising our kids with mental wellness and strategies to help each
other and others.

What makes it difficult to
reach out for help?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● judgement
● Being treated differently and seen as weak
● Societal expectations. Family expectations. Fear of being
abandoned or shamed.
● facing negative emotions instead of avoiding them
● low self image
● Not having the words to explain how you feel.
● Added expectations or being told what to feel or to just get
past it
● Pride
● don't know how to ask for help, don't know where to get help

What did you think?
How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● anger
● sadness
● Witnessing her trauma, her lack of safety, fear to share, and disconnection from
support.
● I felt so bad for her that she was so scare that she couldn’t talk to some one. I
feel sad but both happy that she had the strenght to final talk
● day after day, week after week- 365 days of emotion and change . . .
● her resiliency and the courage to build community for others to get support
● Just a sense of "yuck."
● Her rapist continued his life like nothing happened
● Yes, turning a corner. And we don't know if that happened because she got
support or found that strength and compassion for others on her own.
● The loss of so much for her and finally getting to a place of speaking her truth.
● feeling misunderstood and that there's a wall between you and others
● Also, the stigma that if you're on drugs or drunk you weren't raped.

● Talk to your parents
● journaling by validating past or current emotions by
writing a letter to yourself
● Spiritual practice, journaling, connecting with
community
● nonverbal art like Japanese practice kintsugi can be
helpful way to start processing

What did you think?
How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● This was so powerful. I felt the breath pulled from me.
● A heavy weight in my chest. I can relate to her
experience
● Relatable
● Speechless and sad for her.
● I really frelt the tension in my face and I really related
to her escapism
● heart/chest this one hit home for me very relatable.
One line stuck out with me "everyday I picture the life I
cannot live" or something similar
● Her smiling through the pain

How can we support
ourselves and others?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Reach out to friends and family, even when you think
they're doing well. Tell them you love them and are
willing to listen no matter what they have to say,
without judgement.
● Be open to sharing and listening.
● group therapy can be helpful, other group
nontherapeutic settings, too, like holotropic
breathwork or mindfulness retreats
● We can support ourselves by being kind to ourselves
● Try to keep in mind for yourself and others that stress,
depression, anxiety are normal parts of life experience.
● Yes! self-compassion rocks!!!
