New Delhi: To mark this
occasion, the President
host a dinner for the
Council of Ministers and
other dignitaries. Two vol-
umes of his selected
speeches and two books
on Rashtrapati Bhavan
released on the occasion
by the Vice President of
India and Union Minister of
Home Affairs. The books
are titled “Abode under the
Dome” and “Right of the
Line: The President’s
Bodyguard (1773-2015)”.
The two volumes of
Selected Speeches of
President Mukherjee con-
tain important speeches
delivered by the President
since assumption of office
on July 25, 2012 as the thir-
teenth President of India.
The first volume includes
fifty two speeches and is
divided into five sections: (i)
The Nation; (ii) Parliament
and State Legislatures; (iii)
Judiciary and Constitutional
Bodies; (iv) Armed Forces;
(v) and Eminent
Personalities and
Commemorative Events.
The second volume con-
tains 102 speeches and is
divided into three sections:
(i) Education; (ii) Banquet
Speeches; and (iii) Foreign
Visits. The speeches
included in these volumes
reflect President
Mukherjee’s thinking and
appreciation of some of the
core issues concerning our
nation. The two volumes
are part of a four volume
collection of speeches soon
to be published.
“Right of the Line: The
President’s Bodyguard
(1773-2015)” is being pub-
lished in collaboration with
the Ministry of Culture and
IGNCA. The book traces
the history and ethos of
President’s Bodyguard with
its origin in the 18th century
as a trained body of sol-
diers who would escort and
protect the Governor-
General of India to its mod-
ern day contemporaneous
role comprising mainly of
ceremonial duties.
“Abode under the Dome” is
part of a series of books
aimed at documenting the
vibrant and rich legacy of
Rashtrapati Bhavan to
make the public informed
about its historicity and con-
tribution to India’s demo-
cratic fabric. The book is a
product of extensive
research and throws light
on how Rashtrapati Bhavan
spared no effort in caring for
its guests and adhering to
traditional Indian culture. It
also details the part played
by staff members of
Rashtrapati Bhavan’ Guest
Wing in making each and
every honoured guest feel
valued and at home. It cap-
tures fascinating informa-
tion on these visits; how the
world leaders were wel-
comed in India, their
impressions about our
nation and how their visits
to India changed the way
they and consequently the
world looked at our country.
All the above books have
been published by
Publications Division,
Ministry of Information &
Broadcasting.
As we congratulate to
President Pranab
Mukherjee for the comple-
tion of three years in office,
let's learn a little more about
him.
1.President Pranab
Mukherjee started out as an
upper-division clerk in the
office of the Deputy
Accountant-General (Post
and Telegraph) in then
Calcutta.
2. In 1969, he ran for the
public office for the first time
and won a seat in the Rajya
Sabha as a member of
West Bengal.
3. As a child, Mr President
was better known as 'Poltu',
his pet name.
4. Pranab Mukherjee was
rated as the best Finance
Minister of the world by
Euromoney magazine,
according to a survey done
in 1984.
5. Former Prime Minister
Indira Gandhi had once
mildly put forward the idea
of hiring an English tutor to
him, but Pranab Da, proud
of his thickly accented
Bengali English, had simply
declined the idea.

Barely two months ahead
of his second address to
the nation from the ram-
parts of the Red Fort, from
where he had implored
people for 'Swachh Bharat'
with clean toilets in every
school in a year,Prime
Minister Narendra Modi
has said toilets in all
schools would be provided
in a few months. Mr Modi,
in a recent interview to
United News of India (UNI)
, said the 'Swachh Bharat'
mission has been started to
see that health and
hygiene issues of the poor
do not affect their working
capacity and output. “We
took up the task of provid-
ing toilets in all schools. It is
going to be completed in
next few months.Don’t chil-
dren of the poor study in
these public schools?,”
averred Mr Modi. He was
replying to a specific ques-
tion that his detractors
allege that the Modi is pro-
corporate, anti farmer and
anti poor government.
Besides 'Swachh Bharat'
mission, he enlisted many
other programmes
launched for the common
man.
The Prime Minister retort-
ed, “these are just a few
examples. What prevented
these things from being
done effectively during the
last 60 years?” In every
household, kids are taking
lead reminding their elders
that cleanliness should
begin from the home, ''Your
question also points at the
same thing , I do strongly
believe that if every citizen
decides to to be partner of
the Swachh Bharat mission
that leanliness would auto-
matically be there in the
entire society. He said that
if every citizen be con-
cerned of it, then cleanli-
ness would prevail every-
where.''
The 'Swachh Bharat' cam-
paign ever since it was
launched by the Prime
Minister on Rajpath on
October 2,2014 has engi-
neered public response
and even at places ,where
social groups who had
nothing to do with city’s
hygiene got involved and
many groups are now fre-
quently seen in public
parks clearing the debris.
The Mission was launched
with the objective of ensur-
ing cleanliness and open
defecation free urban areas
in all 4,041 statutory cities
by 2019. Estimated cost is
Rs. 66,009 crore out of
which the Centre’s share is
Rs.14,643 crores.
Official sources said physi-
cal targets include 1.04
crore household toilets
,2.52 lakh community toi-
lets seats and 2.54 lakh
public toilet seats and
assisting 30 crore urban
population with solid waste
management practices.
During 2014-15, about Rs
800 crore has been
released to 28 states/
UTs.Over two lakh house-
hold toilets have been built
besides 12,000 community
toilets during the year.
Government sources said
390 cities have reported
100 per cent collection and
transportation of municipal
solid waste. Standard oper-
ating procedures (SPO)
were also issued by the
government to ensure
cleanliness during and after
public gatherings and
meetings. When UNI corre-
spondents interacted with
people across the coun-
try,most of them quipped ,”
Bhai sahib, Modi ji ne lal
quila par bola tha swachhta
ke bare mein,hum to ab
unke feed back ka intarzar
karte hein on the
Independence day “ ( Mr
Modi had spoken about the
cleanliness now, we await
his feedback on August
15). Tone and tenor of peo-
ple acrosss the country
was same ,but they all
admitted the buzz on the
cleanliness front.
Now less than sixty days
are left for Mr Modi to
address the nation from
Red Fort from where he
had appealed to finish task
of providing toilets in all
schools within a year. He
had said that he wanted
that all schools in the coun-
try should have toilets with
separate ones for
girls.“This target should be
finished within one year
with the help of state gov-
ernments and on the next
August 15,we should be in
firm position to announce
that there is not a school in
India without separate toi-
lets for boys and girls”.
The SBM, in tandem with
large number of govern-
ment agencies, is bracing
to ensure toilets in every
school in next few months
besides gearing up for to
ensure cleanliness during
the coming world famous
Kumbh Mela in Nashik on
banks of river Goadavari
from July 14 to September
25. Mr Modi, in his latest
meeting to review the pro-
gramme,has directed
authorities that spiritual
leaders should be associat-
ed with cleanliness efforts
during major congregation-
al events like Kumbh Mela
and Jagannath Yatra.

Asian countries were flourish-
ing with ship breaking and
related business in the last
decade. The Asian dry-docks
high on dismantle and sal-
vage for scrap iron and other
electronic scraps. Hundreds
of companies operate in
India. It had been the worst
affected industry by the
Global economic slowdown
and declining demand for
steel. This was a beneficial
business till the beginning of
2008, when the prices were
as high as $700 for a ton of
salvaged metal from the
ships. It has declined steadily
from there to reach $200 now.
This is a serious threat to
shipping industry as the
labour costs and overheads
have increased while the
prices are going downhill. The
worst hit state is Gujarat
wherein Bhavnagar; the main
industry is ship breaking
which is facing severe hur-
dles now. Ship owners are not
willing to sell their ageing
ships as the fall in the price of
scrap steel has depreciated
the value of ships. The liquid-
ity crunch have also brought
bad phase for the industry.
Ship Breakers Association of
India is doing its best but lack
of manpower and recruiting
the immediate resource is the
biggest challenge. This is a
major issue for the ship
breaking companies. No one
wants to break their aged
ships for the 30 per cent of its
value compared to the peak
prices. So, these oldies are
floating idle on the seashores.
Now the scenario has
changed, the ship-breaking
industry in India is likely to
witness hectic activity in the
next 10 years with the
European Union’s proposed
accelerated phase-out of sin-
gle-hull tankers. According to
a recent study, there are more
than 2,250 single-hull tankers
of 5,000 DWT, or a total of
129.5 million DWT (till
January 2004), that will have
to be scrapped. This is 25-30
per cent higher than the esti-
mate of peak volume of 2015.
These tankers will be with-
drawn by 2010 and 2015 in
accordance with the strict
time-tables set by the
European Commission (EC)
and the IMO (International
Maritime Organisation). The
new regulations include a ban
on carrying heavy grades of
oil in single-hull tankers.

More than 20 years have passed but trials
are still on. One more accused Yakub
Abdul Razak Memon, a death row convict
in the March 12, 1993 Mumbai serial
blasts case, will be hanged at 7 am on July
30 in Nagpur Central Jail. It will be the first
execution in the 1993 blasts case.
The Supreme Court dismissed the curative
petition of the lone death row convict in
the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case Yakub
Abdul Razak Memon, saying his punish-
ment adheres to the principles of natural
justice. A two-paragraph order passed by
the bench in their chambers away from the
public eye, said a curative plea would
stand had Yakub Memon not been made a
party in the lis (litigation) or being a party
he was not issued notice of the lis or if the
judge concerned was proved to have some
prior “connection” with the case, which
might give an apprehension of bias. Since
none of the three instances have been agi-
tated or proved by Yakub Memon, the cur-
ative would not stand, the court held.
There are still around 7 more days to go
for the execution to happen. I am sure the
pseudo-secular brigade would try some
more tactics and try the “human rights”
route to somehow save this terrorist. So
far, the government agencies and judiciary
have followed the rule book to the last
sentence. It should also be appreciated
that both the BJP led Central Government
and the BJP led State Government have
not tried to hide information about the
hanging, like what the Congress regime
did in the case of Afzal Guru. I hope that
the execution will take place on said date
and that gives a good chance to the broth-
er of the condemned man – Tiger Memon
and his friend Dawood Ibrahim to contem-
plate on the whole purpose of their lives.
The execution would give solace to the rel-
atives of the innocent people killed in the
bomb blasts; for no fault of theirs.
The 1993 Mumbai bombings were a series
of 13 bomb explosions that took place in
Mumbai. The co-ordinated attacks were
the most destructive bomb explosions in
Indian history. The single-day attacks
resulted in over 257 fatalities and 700
injuries. The attacks were co-ordinated by
Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar, don of the
Mumbai-based international organised
crime syndicate named D-Company.
Kaskar is believed to have ordered and
helped organise the bombings in Mumbai,
through one of his subordinates, Tiger
Memon. The bombings are also believed
to have been financially assisted by the
expatriate Indian smugglers, Haji Ahmed,
Haji Umar and Taufiq Jaliawala, as well as
the Pakistani smugglers, Dawood Jatt. The
Indian authorities have not successfully
proved the involvement of the Pakistani
intelligence agency (ISI) in the blasts.
Several of the terrorists according to
Indian government allegedly received
arms, ammunition and explosives training
in Pakistan but Indian authorities have
failed to provide any evidence confirming
these allegations.

Xu-ZiqinPakistan will buy eight submarines from China in
a multi-billion dollar deal that will boost Pakistani navy’s
maritime capabilities, media report.
An agreement was reached in Islamabad during a meet-
ing between Pakistan Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Xu
Ziqin, President of state-owned China Shipbuilding &
Offshore International Company Limited (SCOC) — the
trade arm of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation.
The two sides in-principle agreed on the sale of eight
submarines that China will provide to Pakistan Navy, The
Express Tribune reported.
Sources in the finance ministry, however, said the deal is
subject to final review form higher authorities in Beijing,
following which a formal agreement will be signed.
They also said that Pakistan would make payments in
four instalments and the delivery will be made in coming
years.
According to a vague statement issued by the finance
ministry after the meeting, Dar said the visit by the CSOC
delegation to Pakistan would strengthen bilateral eco-
nomic and defence cooperation. “Pakistan and China
have reached an understanding on matters of defence
cooperation relating to Pakistan Navy,” the statement
said. “Financial arrangements to this effect were also
concluded,” it added. The statement quoted Xu thanking
Dar for his contribution in concluding the arrangements,
saying it was reflective of the “deep-rooted” China-
Pakistan friendship. The reports of submarines deal was
in the air since the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping
to Pakistan in April. It was reported then that the contract
could be worth USD 4 billion to USD 5 billion, the biggest
arms export deal for Communist China.
Pakistan has been negotiating the purchase of sub-
marines from China since 2011. No details were, howev-
er, given about the type of the submarines.

Kolkata: An 18-year-old girl and her father were assault-
ed by an auto driver at the busy Rashbehari crossing on
Tuesday night when they protested against abrupt short-
ening of a route. The girl says the accused tried to stran-
gle her.
The Rashbehari-Behala auto-rickshaw route is one of the
busiest in Kolkata but the father and daughter duo could-
n't find one willing to go the distance even at a peak office
hour, 5pm. All the auto-rickshaw drivers said they would
go only up to Chetla or Taratala, which would force pas-
sengers to pay twice for the same distance. "We were
turned down by 40 auto drivers. Finally, we asked one
why they were not going to Behala. It led to an altercation.
Suddenly, another auto driver pulled my father by his col-
lar and dragged him towards an auto. Other auto drivers
separated the two. However the attacker returned with a
brick and threw it at my father," she said. The girl rushed
to save her father. "The auto driver came up from behind
and tried to throttle me," she said. They filed a complaint
with Tollygunge police. The accused is under arrest.

exciting case after another!
Bringing some more twists to the
tale, Sony Entertainment
Television’s CID comes to the
city as they began their exten-
sive journey in the north of India
for a special series – CID Mar
Miteynge.
The fearless trio of ACP
Pradyuman, Abhijeet and Daya
will be seen solving one of the
grittiest murder mysteries ever in
the city. This investigation will
take them to popular places like
Dilli Haat, Lajpat Bazaar, Sardar
Bazaar and of course the
famous Delhi Metro.
We’ve been telling you for a while now that
female actors are not happy with the
disparity in pay in Bollywood, and it
now appears that they’re out to get
what they want. While there have
been reports of actors Kangana
Ranaut and Deepika Padukone
increasing their fees, male actors
like Emraan Hashmi and Saif Ali
Khan have slashed theirs.
"After delivering a spate of
flops, Emraan has slashed his
fee for the Azhar biopic to Rs 4
crore instead of his usual Rs 11
crore," a source was quoted as
saying earlier, while Saif has
also cut down his fee after
delivering flops such as
Humshakals (2014) and Happy
Ending (2014).
Trade analyst Atul Mohan says
that the reasons notwithstand-
ing, this has levelled the pay
field. "There has always been a
debate on how the pay structure
of actors and actresses are dif-
ferent. This will help bridge the
gap," he says.
Producer Krishika Lulla agrees. "It’s good that actors are
decreasing their fees. I think it’s better if they share the profit,"
she says.
Another factor that is contributing to closing the gap is the success of women-
centric films, says actor-producer Ajay Devgn. "Things are changing now that
women-centric films are doing well.

CID’s quest for justice brings them to Delhi
RadhikaAs the young wife of
an aging artist, Radhika Apte
brought an understated sen-
suality to her role in Sujoy
Ghosh’s latest short film
“Ahalya”, which is director’s
feminist take on the famous
mythological story.
She liked the fact that
despite being a seductress, her character had a certain
innocence and simplicity.
“It was a unique character of a seductress and yet so
simple. There was nothing flashy about it. It was very
simple and subtle. The experimentation with the look is
also like that, the way she walks and sits… I am happy it
has paid off,” said Radhika.
The actress, who has been getting rave reviews from the
audience and the critics for the 14-minute-long short,
said it was a wish come true to work with the filmmaker
and share screen space with veteran Bengali actor
Soumitra Chatterjee again.
“The two foremost reasons for me to do ‘Ahalya’ were
Sujoy, who is a fantastic story-teller and a great filmmak-
er and Soumitra da, with whom I had worked previously
on a Bengali film. I couldn’t believe I was getting to work
with him again. I am a big fan of his work.”
