New Delhi: In yet another
difficult and challenging
operation, Indian Naval
Ship Tarkash evacuated
464 personnel of different
nationalities from the war
torn city of Aden, Yemen.
Body of Late Shri Manjeet
Singh, who succumbed to
injuries sustained during
bombing in Aden city was
embarked onboard INS
Tarkash for passage to
Djibouti. He was a resident
of Hamirpur, Himachal
Pradesh. 46 Indians
nationals and 422 persons
hailing from 14 countries
were evacuated in this trip
from the port city of Aden
and disembarked at
Djibouti. The personnel
evacuated were observed
to be in a state of shock
and were greatly relieved
to be onboard an Indian
Naval Ship safely.
Amongst the evacuees
there were four pregnant
women, one patient each
suffering from cancer and
renal failure and two mal-
nourished children were
provided succor and med-

was learnt from the evac-

siege by the Houthis and
the situation there was
grim with continuous
shelling and firing taking
place. Despite the difficult
conditions, embarkation
continued to be undertak-
en by INS Tarkash. Gun/
shots, shelling and firing in
port area and on the jetty
were reported by crew of
INS Tarkash.
Earlier, INS Sumitra had
safely evacuated 349 per-
sonnel including some for-
eign nationals from the
Port Al Hodeidah. Sumitra
was received in Djibouti
harbour by Indian
Ambassador to Ethopia
and Bangladeshi
Ambassador to Kuwait. All
evacuees were safely dis-

further passage to India by
Indian Air Force Aircraft
and civil flights.

Mumbai, Tarkash and
Sumitra deployed in Gulf of
Aden have evacuated
2671 persons including

New Delhi: Union Minister for Science &
Technology and Earth Sciences Dr. Harsh
Vardhan, has said that India has the poten-
tial of becoming the world’s largest suppli-
er of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAP)
given her rich tradition in this field. He said
rapid strides are now underway in research
and development of credible products.
While on a visit to the Central Institute of
Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) in
Purara (Uttarakhand) last evening, Dr
Harsh Vardhan emphasized the need to
promote agri-entrepreneurship in medici-
nal and aromatic plant cultivation because
the demand for these herbs, roots, leaves,
etc. is growing globally.
“India is already a big player in the interna-
tional market for medicinal and aromatic
plants. The government is giving techno-
logical support through enhanced R&D.
The future is very bright,” he said.
The Minister said that the growing global
popularity of alternative and traditional
medicine, backed up by a surge in the
number of practitioners, has created a
huge market for the MAP sector. The
domestic AYUSH market is estimated to
have volumes of Rs 500 crore and exports
are in the region of Rs 200 crore.

Mahendra Singh
We have visited the port of Aden several
times which has good market place and
restaurants along the water front where
you could sit in the evenings and enjoy
drinks and excellent food. The city used
to remain peaceful and we returned to the
ship around midnight with no danger of
terrorism or mugging etc. Beautiful girls
too visit the place as one can easily strike
up a conversation with them. As we head
towards the Red sea, there is a port
named Hodaidah. Several container
ships are anchored there. You can taste
some good “sherbets” near the jetty
stalls. Now, sadly we read about its pres-
ident having left for Saudi Arabia on
account of some disputes.
Islamic states are presently undergoing
too much turmoil which has become a
huge cause of concern. They can surely
enjoy better lives and enhance trade and
commerce. I always purchase excellent
quality biscuits and pure saffron from Iran
which is a developing nation. This nation
could have achieved more progress but
we do not know what they really want, a
bomb, and if so, for what purpose?
Iranian women are very beautiful and
healthy with glowing complexion; they are
very capable too but unfortunately not
making good use of their potential which
is really disappointing. I always took a
long walk on the jetty at Bandar Imam
Khomeini. Good canteen and duty free
shops are located in between.
Maryam Siddiqui a 12-year old Muslim
girl has won the Gita Champions League
contest for explaining the teachings of the
scripture in the best possible manner
which is praiseworthy. Maryam said that
she has always been intensely curious
about religions. Now, compare this with
Union Minister Giriraj Singh who is preoc-
cupied with colour of women’s skin
instead of doing sincere work in the min-
istry. Union Education Minister Smriti
Irani is more careful about who is watch-
ing her. It is true that her privacy must be
respected and there should be no delib-
erate recording with malafide intentions.
She is really smart and knows how to
remain in the news. I like her but Giriraj
Singh totally lacks “class”. When I last
sailed through the Gulf of Aden, I noticed
that piracy had reduced there. We were
accompanied by armed guards. When we
first sailed through this area, the maxi-
mum sea temperature; used to be 30
degree Celsius but now it remains 33
degree. But what a homely port Aden
used to be.
Aden a magnificent seaport city India observed the National Maritime Day. On this day in
1919 navigation history was created when SS Loyalty,
the first ship of the Scindia Steam Navigation Company,
journeyed to the United Kingdom. The National Maritime
Day was first celebrated on 5th April, 1964. Over the
years, we have made reasonably good progress in mar-
itime shipping and have acquired proficiency in the trade.
Thus we can legitimately feel proud of our achievements.
Our National carrier, the Shipping Corporation of India
has done a laudable job but it needs to do more because
after the loss of M.V. Chidambaram, we do not have any
big passenger ship under the Indian flag which is a major
cause of concern.
India has not developed sufficient facilities (floating dry
docks) to repair ships outside the nation. For achieving
this objective, the government should seek the assis-
tance of foreign countries, if required. Let this task also
become a part of the Make in India programme which will
give a boost to manufacturing activities in the country.
India has about 7516 kilometres of coastline serviced by
a total of 182 ports, 12 of them under a special status as
Major Ports being under the purview of the Central
Government. Seventy other ports termed as minor ones
come under the jurisdiction of the respective State
Governments. Ennore in Tamil Nadu has been declared
as the 12th Major Port.
A lot of development has taken place in the activities per-
taining to the manufacturing engines, pumps, compres-
sors and many other ship board equipment, big and
small, as witnessed in a recent exhibition at Goregaon
and for which we deserve credit.

New Delhi: Ronnie
Screwvala’s entrepreneur-
ial journey is filled with inno-
vation and disruption, and
he has done the same for
his debut book – Dream
With Your Eyes Open.
Founder of one of India’s
largest media & entertain-
ment conglomerates,
Ronnie launched his book
with a Koffee Session with
Karan Johar in an event
held at the capital today.
“Ronnie’s journey is an
inspiration, to say the least.
His innate ability to merge
creativity with commerce is
remarkable. I am sure his
book will ignite this nation’s
spirit and urge people to
dream and give them the
confidence of making their
dreams come true. I am
delighted to have been a
part of his journey and
thrilled to be doing my
Koffee Session with him
today for his book’s launch!”
said Karan Johar.
The book is already getting
rave reviews and congratu-
latory messages are pour-
ing in from all corners.
Hon’able Prime Minister,
Shri Narendra Modi has
also sent in his encourage-
ment to Ronnie and said, “I
hope the book will encour-
age the youth of India to
pursue their dreams, and in
doing so, devote their ener-
gies to find innovative ways
to build better lives for mil-
lions of Indians”.
Speaking at the launch,
Ronnie Screwvala said, “ I
wanted to write a book on
entrepreneurship as I
believe in its unbridled
power. It is the growing spir-
it of entrepreneurship and
leadership in India, coupled
with the new wave of opti-
mism, passion, aspiration
and ambition that inspired
me to contribute in my small
way and write this book. In
this book, I have shared by
successes and failures and
have detailed out my vast
experiences in an effort to
inspire this generation to
dream, and dream big.”
Supporting the book and
Ronnie’s attempt to cham-
pion the cause of entrepre-
neurship in the country, are
messages from some of the
most sought after entrepre-
neurial stalwarts of our
times.
“Businesses need to go
beyond the interests of their
companies to the communi-
ties they serve. I hope this
book will inspire many to
believe and question how
they impact others as they
grow their companies, says
Ratan Tata.

Vaidehi Taman
Nowadays, it is very easy
to abuse media. Media is
also referred with numer-
ous adjectives. Its credi-
bility is declining. I’m not
blaming anyone, neither
media nor people of this
country. The journalist
abides accountability
before the society in gen-
eral, before the law and
before the professional
connotation. The social
responsibility of the jour-
nalist requires that he
acts in accordance with
his personal ethical stan-
dards. Journalists’ main
goal is to guarantee the
right of citizen and show
truth, important informa-
tion, which allows them to
form adequate impression
about social processes,
their essence and impor-
tance, about the situation
in today’s world.
Even the readers, citizen
of this country, need to
introspect about the dou-
ble standards that they
carry. Everyone wants
journalist to be honest
and unbiased.
The question is that, do
we really respect neutral
reporters, newspapers
and broadcasters? I
bared the pain of being an
unbiased journalist. We
are attacked from all
sides. If you will not take
one particular stand, no
one stands by them. This
happens with me; I criti-
cize and praise every
political party for their
good and bad decisions.
Whenever, I write some-
thing against Congress,
I’m labelled as BJP sup-
porter, if I write something
against Modi’s decision
then I am branded as
Congress paid media or
AAP supporter. We don’t
really like neutral journal-
ists, because they don’t
always write what we
expect. They speak their
mind as and being unbi-
ased write harsh and their
content is not easy to
digest. Press freedom is
one of the major guaran-
tees of the freedom of
speech, an obligatory ele-
ment for ensuring other
civil rights and freedoms.
The freedom of the press
involves the possibility to
freely discuss and criti-
cise the activities of the
authorities, civil and pri-
vate structures.
Journalists contribute to
the realization of the right
to express unpopular
opinions or agree with the
point of view expressed
by the majority.
Proud to be only parallel media

Patna/ New Delhi: More
than 300 satyagrahis have
been taken into custody
with brutality by the Bihar
Police, when they were
holding a peaceful satya-
grah in front of the Bihar
Vidhan Mandal in Patna
today. Under the banner of
Bihar Nav-Nirman
Abhiyan, nine people’s
movements and organisa-
tions, namely Kosi Nav-
Nirman Manch, Jan Mukti
Sangharsh Vahini,
Parchadhari Sangharsh
Vahini, Lok Sangharsh
Samiti, Dalit Shakti
Sangathan, Samajwadi
Jan Parishad, Parivartan
jan andolan, Lok
Sangharsh Morchaand
Mazdoor Kisan Samiti,
came together to demand
people’s right over land
and livelihoods. The spe-
cific demands included:
1. Ensure Forest rights of 1
lakh people who have
been denied so far
2. Ensure land rights of
those who possess parcha
3.Guarantee rehabilitation
and resettlement of 3 lakh
people affected by Kosi
floods
4. Provide equal land rights
to women in the total
amount of land for distribu-
tion
5.Ensure land rights of
those who are affected by
floods and river erosion
6.Give individual parcha to
every homeless family
The satyagrah and arrests
in Patna is yet another
reminder that the move-
ment for land rights is
intensifying in every state,
district, village and basti of
this country.
Despite the State’s apathy,
use of brute force or the
draconian land acquisition
ordinance to facilitate cor-
porate loot of our
resources, the assertion of
right over land and
resources will only gain
strength. While the Bihar
government is taking a
welcome step to oppose
land ordinance, they still
have the responsibility and
the use of force against
peacefully protesting
Satyagrahis shows their
commitment to land rights.
We demand immediate
release of all satyagrahis
and urge the government
and state authorities to
accept their just and fair
demands.

Autism Carnival: Celebrate Autism

New Delhi: Disorders of
the brain or mind are less
understood in Indian socie-
ty and often paid inappro-
priate attention. Many
times these concerns are
brushed under the carpet
and superficially tagged as
a thought in futility. Autism
Spectrum Disorder (also
referred to as Autism) is
one such disorders that
still awaits its share of due
attention from our society.
Autism and Autism
Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
are both general terms for
a group of complex disor-
ders of brain development.
These disorders are often
characterized by difficulties
in social interaction, verbal
as well as non-verbal com-
munication and repetitive
behaviors usually in vary-
ing degrees. Dr. Deepak
Gupta, Child & Adolescent
Psychiatrist & founder of
Centre for Child and
Adolescent Well (CCAW)
says, "Every child with
ASD is unique in his or her
own way, an attitude that
our society has to under-

In a move that could upset India again,
the Lahore High Court has ordered
Pakistan government to immediately
release 2008 Mumbai terror attacks mas-
termind Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi.
The Lahore High Court suspended
Lakhvi’s detention under Maintenance of
Public Order after the government failed
to produce satisfactory sensitive records
of the former Let operations commander.
The release order was issued by Justice
Muhammad Anwarul Haq of the Lahore
High Court two days after he had directed
the Punjab government to prepare a
record of “secret documents and activi-
ties of Lakhvi” and submit.
However, the record presented to the
court was unsatisfactory, and hence not
accepted.
“The law officer had submitted important
information about Lakhvi, but the court
did not accept this and declared the evi-
dence unsatisfactory,” said an official of
LHC.
The judge has ordered Lakhvi to submit
two surety bonds worth Rs 1 million each
for his release.
Earlier, Lakhvi had filed a petition in the
Lahore High court challenging his deten-
tion.
Lakhvi’s counsel had argued that the for-
mer LeT commander can’t be held in
detention beyond 90 days without pre-
senting him before the LHC review board.
“A provincial review board (comprising
judges of the high court) should be con-
stituted to take up this matter,” Lakhvi’s
counsel Raja Rizwan Abbasi said.

After convicting Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on all 30 counts in
2013 Boston marathon bombing case, the 12-member
jury in Massachusetts will now decide whether the 21-
year-old bomber would be awarded death penalty or he
would spend the rest of his life in jail.
The jury will now start hearing evidence to decide
Dzhokar’s fate, who reportedly fidgeted and stood with
his hands folded and gaze fixed down as the charges
were being read.
Reacting to the verdict, Dzhokar’s mother Zubeidat
Tsarnaeva, in a note sent to a family friend, reiterated
that her son was innocent while America was “the terror-
ist”, reported the Vocativ.
Vocativ also found the bomber’s mother’s note posted
on a Russian social networking site. The note written in
Russian translated to, “I will never forget it. May god
bless those who helped my son. The terrorists are the
Americans and everyone knows it. My son is the best of
the best”. Dzhokhar along with his brother Tamerlan
Tsarnaev staged the deadly pressure cooker bomb
attack at Boston marathon on April 15, 2013 that left 3
people dead and over 260 injured out of which over a
dozen lost limbs. Also police officer Sean Collier was
killed later in the shootout as both the brothers attempt-
ed to flee. Dzhokhar has been found guilty on all 30
counts, 17 of which carry death penalty.

India has ended its mas-

Canada and UK from the
strife-torn Yemen and

It has also evacuated the

“The total no. of Indians

11. New Delhi: One serious,
but often overlooked,
flaw of science educa-
tion in India is the state
of syllabi — nobody
seems to have talked
about it. Simply put, we
have to teach our stu-
dents nationally impor-
tant elements of sci-
ence, as well as the his-
tory of Indian science.
Consider existing syllabi
of microbiology or infec-
tious/communicable dis-
eases across Indian uni-
versities; diseases that
are endemic to the
Indian subcontinent are
not included, while that
of US and Europe are
included — which is of
little practical signifi-
cance to Indian stu-
dents.
What is the point of
teaching diseases like
Rocky Mountain spotted
fever, Chagas disease or
“human African sleeping
sickness”, which are not
reported from India?
While malaria, rabies
and dengue can be
occasionally spotted in
syllabi of some universi-
ties, most of the com-
mon endemic diseases
prevalent in the Indian
subcontinent, including
Ascariasis, Trichuriasis,
S t r o n g y l o i d i a s i s ,
Toxocariasis, Lymphatic
filariasis, Trachoma,
Visceral leishmaniasis,
Japanese encephalitis,
C h i k u n g u n y a ,
Leptospirosis, and
Amebiasis are altogeth-
er missing in syllabi of
most of the universities,
including that of the
medical colleges.
This would mean stu-
dents passing out of
those courses are utterly
ignorant of the local
problems pertinent to
them — an issue of
great significance in the
country’s didactic policy.
These exact diseases
are globally known as
neglected tropical dis-
eases — neglected by
the West for the obvious
reason that these dis-
eases are not found
there. But is it not ironi-
cal that these are even
neglected in their home.

Bangalore: High Court has asked
the CID and the state government
how the messages exchanged
between DK Ravi and a woman

death got 'leaked' to the media.
The high Court on Monday asked
the CID and the state government
how the messages exchanged
between IAS officer DK Ravi and
a woman batchmate before the
former's death got 'leaked' to the
media Justice S Abdul Nazeer
said: "The mobile phone and the
documents are in your custody
and also kept in a sealed cover.
You are the custodian of all mate-
rial. Recently, I saw those mes-
sages being shown word to word
on a Kannada channel... I have
seen them when you presented it
to the court. How did they (media)
get those which are in your cus-
tody and have been kept in a
sealed cover? Who leaked that?"
He asked the question immedi-
ately when the court took up fur-
ther hearing of a petition filed by
Sudhir Reddy, husband of the
woman IAS officer, seeking pro-
tection of the right to privacy for
himself and his family.
the final hearing and judgement
for the plea filed by women IAS
officer DK Ravi's batchmate hus-
band.
The Karnataka High Court today
disposed of a petition seeking
restrictions on publication of any
interim report or making any public
statement pertaining to investiga-
tion being conducted by CID into
the mysterious death of an upright
IAS officer.
The petition was filed by Sudhir
Reddy, husband of a woman IAS
officer, a batchmate of 35-year old
D K Ravi who was found hanging
from a fan at his apartment here
on March 16, with police calling it
prima facie a case of suicide.
Disposing of the plea, Justice
Abdul Nazeer noted that the state
government had given in writing
that it would not make any state-
ment in relation to the investiga-
tion as the case has been handed
over to CBI for inquiry, thus los-
ing its jurisdiction.
The judge also directed the High
Court Registry to hand over the
sealed investigation material to
CBI. “This court directs the reg-
istry to hand over the sealed
material to CBI, not unseal it. Let
me be clear,” he added.
Facing public outcry over the
death of Ravi under mysterious
circumstances, government had
handed over the case to CBI after
claims that he did not commit sui-
cide.
The High Court had on March 24
directed Reddy to file objections
to the government’s plea.
The government had filed objec-
tions to the petition filed by
Reddy, seeking restrictions on
publication of any interim report
or making any public statement
pertaining to investigation being
conducted by the government
through CID. The government
had sought vacation of restraint
on publishing or making public the
interim report pertaining to the
investigation carried out by CID
into the death of Ravi.

New Delhi: As government and
different stakeholders have been
trying to device ways to save
rivers in the city from getting pol-
luted, Indian Institute of
Technology (IIT) Delhi scholars
have come up with a technology
that can easily absorb toxic ele-
ments and allow only treated water
to get discharged into the river.
Unlike the present available tech-
nology, this material uses cheap
nano materials that are readily
available. Using starch and other
chemicals, the material can be
either coated in the pipes of the
factories that release effluents or
can be placed it as a gauge at the
pipe's openings.
"Starch as you know is very cheap
and very small amount of it is used
to make this material. As per the
experiment we have done this
material absorb 95% of the toxic
metals, which will help a lot in sav-
ing the aquatic life," said Arabinda
Baruah, research scholar from
Department of Chemistry IIT-D.
According to the research schol-
ars, this would be a very useful in
polymer, textile and the leather
factories.
This project will be displayed dur-
ing the IIT-Open House-- an annu-
al event of the institute which
showcases innovative project on
April 18.
While one project looks at clean-
ing the rivers, the other project
called "immuno magnetic cell cap-
ture" will help in the healthcare
sector, making diagnosis of
typhoid faster and cheaper.
At present it takes 72 hours to
determine whether a person is suf-
fering from typhoid, this device
developed at IIT-D will help diag-
nostic possible in just six hours.
"Bacterial infections like cholera,
diarrhoeal disease are major
cause of death due to lack of clean
water and sanitation.
Existing methods does not make
possible diagnostic easy, because
of which many people consume
antibiotics easily available but our
device will detect infection early
and also reduce cost," said
Ravikrishnan Elangovan, assistant
professor from the department of
bio-chemical engineering and
biotechnology. Developed with the
help of two other professors from
different department and PhD
scholars, it is a portable device
which will detect infection by test-
ing stool and blood.

New Delhi: India is likely to miss the exports target of
USD 340 billion set for 2014-15, falling short of the
mark by almost 8 percent at around USD 314 billion, a
top official said. According to Directorate General of
Foreign Trade (DGFT) Pravir Kumar, it appears “diffi-
cult” to achieve the USD 340 billion merchandise
exports target.
Asked about the quantum of total merchandise exports
the Commerce Ministry expects for the current fiscal,
Kumar said: “Almost at par with the last year. Last year,
we were at USD 314 billion, so around that only.”
He was speaking on the sidelines of a function organ-
ised by exporters body Federation of Indian Export
Organisations (FIEO).
During 2013-14, total value of exports stood at USD
465.90 billion, with merchandise and services account-
ing for USD 314.40 billion and USD 151.5 billion,
respectively.
The target for total exports for 2014-15 is USD 500 bil-
lion, with merchandise and services expected to be at
USD 340 billion and USD 160 billion, respectively.

Pune: Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram
Rajan said banking sector will see major
changes in the coming years with the entry
of new players, including a postal bank
possibly, while public sector lenders will be
the biggest "change agents".
"The banking sector is set to undergo
great changes in the next few years. We
are going to have a whole set of new insti-
tutions, payments banks, small finance
banks, and we are going to possibly have
postal bank. The existing institutions are
going to change tremendously. Public sec-
tor banks are going to be a tremendous
change agent," Rajan said.
The governor, who was addressing the
students of National Institute of Bank
Management on its 11th convocation, also
said the change will be witnessed mostly
in the social banking. "Most banks will do
work with the social sector because that is
where new business is to be obtained."
Rajan also said that "between these banks
there are so many different opportunities
that are going to arise, for example the
derivatives markets are going to be much
more vibrant".
"Information technology used by the
banks, by the banking correspondents and
the clients is going to be made different
from what it was in the past," Rajan said,
adding "but there will be many opportuni-
ties outside of the derivatives and the IT
sector."
Last December, RBI received 40 applica-
tions for payment banks and 31 applica-
tions for small banks. Recently, India Post
also applied for a payment bank licence.
On April 1 last year, RBI allowed IDFC and
micro-lender Bandhan to enter the bank-
ing business, and promised on-tap
licences going forward. Chief economic
adviser Arvind Subramanian said on this
occasion that the international environ-
ment is relatively benign towards India.
Rajan said, banking sector will See Big Changes in Next Few Years

Delhi/NCR: ASMS School
of Fashion observed 4th
April as the day for “Green
Fashion” under the bless-
ings of Mr. Sandeep

try always explains what
you absolutely have to
wear, from a top to buy
those pants, pair that dress
with those boots and a bag
to be carried along with.
However, a conventional
cotton takes a third of a
pound of chemical to make
just a T-Shirt. The students
of ASMS School of

have given simple rea-
sons why stocking your
closet with eco-friendly
clothing choices--from
organic cotton to your
grandmother's 1950's
Chanel--makes a differ-
ence. Ms. Prakhi and Ms.

dents of BSC. Fashion
