Zika is spread mostly through the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes and can be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus. While Zika infection is usually mild and short-lived for most people, it poses risks for pregnant women as it can cause microcephaly and other birth defects if contracted during pregnancy. There is currently no vaccine or treatment for Zika.
