The Effects Of Polygraph Tests On The United States...
While the courts have been slow to accept polygraphs, others have embraced them. Polygraph tests
have gained general acceptance in the scientific fields of psychology and psychophysiology and in the
areas of those disciplines devoted to credibility assessment. Psychophysiological credibility
assessment, commonly known as polygraph testing, has long passed the experimental stage.
The United States government has been, and continues to be, a heavy user of polygraph tests.
Numerous federal agencies use the polygraph to investigate criminal acts and to vet employees. Some
Federal agencies that use the polygraph include the following:
Federal Bureau of Investigation;
Secret Service;
Drug Enforcement Agency;
all of the Armed Services; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That begs the question of how accurate are juries at detecting truth and how accurate is eyewitness
testimony?
The DOD Polygraph Institute also teaches a course on how to offer polygraph results at trial. It has
been estimated that the Federal government employs about 500 polygraph examiners and spends
approximately $25 million per year on examiner salaries alone. These numbers have increased
dramatically since the establishment of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
When you look at how prevalent the use of the polygraph is within the United States government (and
the justice system) it is mind boggling that most courts are unwilling to consider the evidence as
credible. The Science of a Polygraph
In practice, virtually all polygraph instruments record measures from at least three physiological
systems that are controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Recordings are usually made of palmar
sweating (commonly known as the galvanic skin response or the electrodermal response), relative
blood pressure (obtained from an inflated cuff on the upper arm), and respiration (obtained from
volumetric sensors placed around the chest and/or abdomen). Some field polygraph instruments also
make measurements of peripheral vasomotor activity and monitor the subject s movements.
The basis of polygraphy or psychophysiological credibility assessment is a scientific theory that can
be and has been tested with the methods of science. Any conscious effort

Asbestos And Its Effects On Australia
Asbestos had been widely used in many industries around the world due to its versatility, strength, fire
resistant and insulating properties of the fibres. They are used in the manufacturing industry as vinyl
floor tiles, electrical components, gasket products, brake linings and disc pads. The three main type of
asbestos, white, blue and brown can also be found in cement sheeting and piping in the construction
industry. However, the use of asbestos in Australia and many other countries had been ban due to its
known health effects which is include pleural diseases, lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma.
Despite being banned in Australia nowadays, asbestos can still be found in most of older construction,
residential and commercial area as well as abandoned mining site. Studies show that the building
workers, specifically the plumbers, gas fitters, carpenters and electricians the highest risk of getting
mesothelioma, disease from asbestos fibres (Peto, J., Hodgson, J.T., Matthews, F.T., Jacqueline, R.,
1995). According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the number of mesotheliomas
cases are increasing and expected to reach 18000 in recent. Though the asbestos is known as
hazardous material, it can only affect the health if the asbestos fibres become airborne and are inhaled.
The primary route for the asbestos to enter the body is through the inhalation processes of the
contaminated air (Safework Australia, 2011). Unusually, small fibrous particles of

The Muscular Dystrophy Was First Discovered By Guillaume...
Duchenne muscular dystrophy was first discovered by Guillaume Benjamin Amand Duchenne in the
1860 s, but due to lack of medical knowledge little was known until the 1980 s. It was in 1986 that
researchers that were supported by the MDA, muscular dystrophy association, identified the particular
X chromosome that leads to DMD, Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Dystrophin is the protein that is
associated with the gene and was named in 1987.The DMD gene is the second largest gene to date,
and it produces dystrophin.(Genome, 2013) Lack of the protein Dystrophin in the muscle cells causes
them to weaken and become fragile. (MDA, 2015). DMD is an inherited disorder, but there are rare
cases where it can spontaneously appear in a child with no previous family history due to a random
mutation in moms X chromosome. DMD is a gender specific disease that only appears in males.
Females are carriers in their X Chromosome and they have the chance of passing the disease on to
their children, 50 50 to a girl and 50 50 to a boy. If the girl does receive the gene she becomes a
carrier. If the boy gets the gene then he has the disease. Males do not pass on the gene to their children
because they pass on the Y chromosome and the disease is X specific. Some female carriers have
indicators of being a carrier by having symptoms of cardiomyopathy, shortness of breath during
exercise, and muscle weakness in the back, arms, and legs. There have been very rare instances where
a girl has not received a

Rapa Nui Theory
Easter Island, or Rapa Nui as the island s natives would say, is a small remote island taking up
approximately 65 square miles of Chilean territory. Rapa Nui acquired the name Easter Island when a
dutch explorer, Jacob Roggeveen, and his voyagers came across the island by mistake while enroute
for a different island on Easter Sunday in 1722. This volcanic island is located over 2,000 miles off the
coast of Chile, but still remains part of the Polynesian Islands. Being founded by Polynesians, the
island soon became heavily influenced by Polynesian culture. Many myths and traditions carry out the
history of the island before Dutch explorers discovered Rapa Nui and conquered the land but some
things of Rapa Nui remain a mystery. However, one of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many theories are passed as myth for their outlandish spiritual explanations. For example, a myths
tells how the statues descended down from the heavens and once roamed the lands of Rapa Nui before
the first inhabitants had taken over. However, more logical and realistic speculations linger in the
minds of archaeologists and historians of today. The most plausible theory to date, after archaeologists
performed a demonstrative experiment, concludes that the Moai were built inside quarries dug into the
side of the Rano Raraku volcano.on the eastern edge of the island. They began as very large,
rectangular stone blocks, laying out flat with a base below them to hold them to the bedrock. In this
phase, a master carver and his crew of approximately 15 carvers would begin working on the face, just
barely carving the outline of the facial features with a pick known as a toki in Rapa Nui. After a full
outline of the face was roughly carved, the master carver and his team would then insert all the
definitive attributes that would differentiate the various chiefs. This juncture of the Moai construction
explains a suitable amount of knowledge to a small portion of how these statues were supposedly
formed, but what still remains is how could they have been stood up and placed onto their

The Role Of Sports For Athletes And Women Athletes
Marketisation and commoditisation provide leverage for powerful nations to assert their dominance
over their sport competitors by, for instance, buying their best athletes from the dominated countries
and sometimes offering those athletes citizenship. There are instances when international corporate
entities sponsor and own clubs in other countries, make all management decisions, and secure profits
which they return to their home countries thereby leaving host countries further impoverished
(Nauright 2012:54).The above global pattern has not favored most womens national and local teams
as most corporate entities prefer to sponsor national mens teams. Both the commodification and
corporatization of sport reduce especially womens ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Local leagues face serious challenges due to inability to raise funds as a result of reduced quality of
play resulting in poor stadium attendance that mean fewer facilities, and as indicated earlier, this lack
of facilities has a trickle down effect on accessibility of facilities for women in sports. Due to
globalisation, national teams go into a stage of dependent development an example is the English
soccer teams as a result of the presence of foreign players in the league system denying most of the
local clubs eventually has a negative effect the national team (Maguire 2013:200).
Globalisation has also impacted on local sport participation by way of administrative practices. For
example, Carter (2002) documents the rise of global administrative bodies (such as FIFA and OIC)
and FIVF (Vanderhoof 2011) that oversee and regulate various sports. Similarly, MacAloon (1984)
discusses how the modern Olympic movement highlights the diffusion of sports forms and
organisation across the globe. These organisations also continue empowering males (e.g., the amount
of money FIFA gives to mens soccer teams during the World Cups is greater than the amount they
give to womens teams). Such inequities sometimes serve as deterrents to female participants and
thereby compromise efforts to create equality between the sexes (Grainey 2012:23). The
internationalisation as well as the internationality of sports can

The Bluest Eye Research Paper
The rape of Pecola is a tragic occurrence. In The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison focuses heavily on the
topic of her rape. Morrison shows how the rape has affected Pecola by creating a powerful and
compelling tale, allowing the reader to connect with Pecola and better empathize with her. Morrison s
stylistic choices and use of powerful language make her story even more commanding and eye
catching and further the reader s understanding of Pecola s misery and their sympathy towards her.
Morrison uses word choice and sentence structure during the scene where Pecola is raped to
emphasize the disturbing nature of the action. Morrison gives the reader a window into Cholly s
thoughts right before he penetrates her. Morrison writes, He wanted to fuck her tenderly (Pp. 162 3).
The juxtaposition of the words fuck and tenderly create a striking and disgusting image that helps to
convey the true horror of the rape. Fuck is related to violence and cruelty while ... Show more content

For example, Morrison does this when describing the act of Cholly raping Pecola. She writes, We had
dropped our seeds in our own little plot of black dirt just as Pecola s father had dropped his seeds in
his own plot of black dirt (Page 6). Morrison compares Pecola to a plot of black dirt to show that
Cholly treats her like he would dirt, doing anything that he wants to it. By writing that Cholly had
dropped his seeds in his own plot of black dirt , Morrison causes the reader to more fully understand
the power and horror of the rape. This wording is extremely effective in showing how awful the rape
is, because it shows Pecola as being reduced to something as powerless and as meaningless as black
dirt instead of merely stating that she was raped. In addition, by showing how Pecola is objectified and
treated awfully instead of just saying that, Morrison is able to draw more sympathy from the

Second we analysis the macro economy of HK and the anticipated effect on Disney HK s operating
profits. As the tiger of Asia, Hong Kong has a free market economy low taxes, unrestricted capital
movement, stable HK$ linked to US$. What s more, HK s economy was based on services, tourism
and trading. According to data in Exhibit1, the number of visitors is 1570 times its local population in
1999, with an amount of 10.7 billion. Although we see the financial crisis had an impact on tourism,
but it recovered quickly from 11.7 billion in 1996 to 9.6 billion in 1998 then back to 10.7 billion in
1999. We anticipate a further recovery as the economy warm up. As a tourist resort, Hong Kong
Disneyland has high profit potential.
In a word, the relative exposure of credit risk is low.
* Syndicate risk
Hong Kong Disneyland asked for full underwriting. If the syndication is not successful under
subscription, Chase would end up holding too much loans and higher credit exposure to the project.
For example, if there is only one arranger and single stage general syndication, the max exposure of
Chase would be the total amount $HK 3.3 billion in an extreme case when nobody comes to commit
for the loan.
However, a senior HK government official underscored the government s commitment to the project
at Asia Pacific Loan Market Association Conference, there is a high potential of success syndication
since other banks observed the government s backing on this project.

Timed Writing #2 American author, Richelle Goodrich, said that Many times what we perceive as an
error or failure is actually a gift. Ms. Goodrich believes that mistakes should not be looked down on
because they actually help. Many people across the globe believe that mistakes make a person better
instead of worst. Yet, no matter how many times people heard this, they still question how mistakes
can help them. Like many, I believe that mistakes can help a person by correcting their thoughts or

Second New Deal Research Paper
Early in the year of 1929, the stock market crashed, leaving only panic and despair behind. Some
thought that it would only be a short time before everything was normal once again, but that was not
so. Hunger, death, and misery hung in the air, shrouding the dejected feeling that thrived everywhere
at that time. People dreamed of leaving this world of toil and trouble claiming that their home s in
heaven, I m going there (The Carter Family). Many gave up trying, and simply waited. After the
Election of 1933, President Roosevelt and his administration focused on the Great Depression and
trying to solve the problems of the nation s corroding economy and society. Their solutions, The First

Based on the Unemployment Statistics by Gene Smiley, we can see that the First New Deal did help
bring the unemployment rate down, as did the Second Deal. In fact, the total decrease during those
time periods was 11.5 percent. This is a great improvement, but it was not permanent. When the
Second New Deal ended after 1937, the unemployment rate skyrocketed once again, increasing from
9.1 percent to 12.3 percent (Smiley). The New Deal could never hold its own weight, so why could it
handle the collapsing economy as well? The answer is that it could not, not for a long period of time at
least. It would take 2 more years to bring the unemployment rate near where it was at the end of the
Second New Deal programs, and another year after that to bring the rate below the 9.1 percent in 1937
(Smiley). After the 5 years of work and struggle that the First and Second New Deals went through,
after 5 years of planning for success and stability in the years to come, the barrier collapsed, and that
work and time and effort and planning, all of it, was gone in an

Anselm Kiefer Was A German Artist Who Was Born Directly...
Anselm Kiefer was a German artist who was born directly after World War II. The art that Kiefer
created focused on a reconciliation with the shame and horror surrounding the holocaust, aimed aimed
to redefine what it meant to be German in a post Nazi World (Smith). The piece I studied is located at
the MoMa in San Francisco and is entitled Shulamite . Shulamite is a historical painting of a Nazi
Memorial Site, which Kiefer created it in 1983. In this painting, Kiefer transformed the architecture of
a site which was meant to honor Nazi heroes into a memorial for their victims. Kiefer uses some very
interesting aesthetic techniques to reflect the intense emotions of that time and to reflect the rage,
grief, and shame that Germans felt in response to the Holocaust. His intention was to reconcile with
the country s dark past through memorializing the persecuted while painting the country as no longer
representative of it s dark past.
The piece displays a cavernous interior with a series of dark arches that recede towards some
flickering flames. These huge bricks and arches make the hall resemble a sort of dungeon or a sort of
oven. The palette he used is limited to solely to shades of black, and brown. White paint is used to
outline the crevices and edges of the bricks. The windows are dark black, and the ceiling is pitched
black. The dimly lit piece seems to be an interior space solely lit by the series of small flames, and
these flames are placed at a

Social Marketing
Henderson (2001) also adds that:
Embracing CSR would inevitably have consequences that would raise the cost of doing business,
could well reduce revenues, and might also cause companies to sponsor low yielding investment
which they would otherwise have turned down.
In addition, organizations really motivated to apply and absorb CSR as a core value in its activities,
would have to undergo a deep and internal change in its business operations and culture (employees,
suppliers, offices) which represents a costly task and a time consuming mission. (Henderson, 2001)

cited in Comfort et al. 2007, pp.585) describe it as the convergence of branding and Corporate Social
Responsibility .
Lou and Bhattacharya (2009) maintain that CSR creates a level of Moral Capital , which then
translates into Relational wealth with different stakeholders. This is based on brand faith and
credibility with costumers, affective commitment among employees and regulators, trust among
suppliers and higher attractiveness for investors in general. Consequently it is important for
organizations, to understand that CSR initiatives need to be communicated and transmitted to its group
of interest. As Blomqvist and Posner (2004 cited in Comfort et al. 2007, pp.584) propose:
Companies are losing out because there is often little or no integration between CSR and Marketing
departments and their respective strategies and unless CSR becomes central to the Marketing director
s agenda, it will not have the desired effect and can potentially create a backlash.
Lou and Bhattacharya (2009) also add that companies investing in these CSR initiatives can develop
market based intangible assets like Customer loyalty, which can then reduce uncertainty about future
profits of the firm.

Becoming An Anesthesiologist
In the operating room, one of the most important jobs is that of an anesthesiologist. He or she is a
medical doctor who administers anesthesia, a drug used to reduce pain, to a patient during a surgical
procedure. An anesthesiologist is responsible for monitoring the patient before, during, and after the
surgical procedure to ensure the correct dosage of anesthesia is administered and to deal with any
allergic reactions to or complications with the drug. Before administering the drug, an anesthesiologist
must carefully review a patient s medical history and condition to find the correct dosage of anesthesia

Usually, wake up time is around 5:30 AM or earlier on a weekday with an arrival time at the hospital
of 6:00 AM. After entering the hospital, the doctor changes into his or her scrubs and flower cap and
grabs his OR (operating room) schedule. The anesthesiologist then heads to the operating room to
check all equipment and drugs for the day. This process takes about 20 40 minutes. At around 6:30
AM, there is a morning lecture where the doctor meets with the patient to talk about the anesthetic
plans as well as review the patient s medical history. Then the patient goes into the OR. During the
surgery, the doctor may take a fifteen minute break sometime in the morning. However, he or she must
always be easily accessible in the case of an emergency. There is also a lunch break in the afternoon,
but again, the doctor is on standby in case anything goes awry during the surgery. Most cases, the
surgery ends between 3:30 to 5 PM and a resident comes to take his spot after 5 PM. Before the doctor
leaves, he or she must check tomorrow s schedule and review patient s history. This takes about 30 45
minutes. During this time, the anesthesiologist also discusses the patient s conditions with other
members of the surgical team. Sometimes in the afternoon, the anesthesiologist will have to do some
teaching to instruct residents and medical school students. At around 5 6 PM, he or she is allowed to
head home for the day. However, sometimes, the anesthesiologist may be on call and have to come

The Invention Of Black Holes
Black Holes:
Introduction:
Without knowing the existence of black holes, we would still be stuck with many unanswered
questions concerning physics. The most important one would deal with the correctness of Einstein s
general relativity. When studying cosmology, various equations are used in order to explain the
different phenomena that it contains, which are derived from general relativity. With this theory
confirmed, all calculations appear more certain and confident. These objects are fairly important as
they are one of the least understood by humans because they depict laws of physics that appear
completely different from elsewhere in the universe, but, with study, can be more understood. Being
completely invisible, it becomes very difficult to observe and study them. However, astronomers
continue to develop different methods to do so. The question that remains is: What exactly is a black
hole? How do they work and abide to the laws of physics? Simple answer, black holes are regions in
space containing gravitational fields so strong that even light cannot escape them. As a result, they
absorb anything that comes close and becomes trapped by its grip. Black holes come in various forms
and sizes, which work differently depending on their properties. These properties, such as mass,
charge and angular momentum, help in defining black holes and it is using this that it is possible to
derive the math to understand them.

Unity of a Family Explored in The Grapes of Wrath Essay
Unity of a Family Explored in The Grapes of Wrath
One would say that on a literal level The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck is about the Joad family s
journey to California during The Dust Bowl. However, it is also about the unity of a family and the
concept of birth and death, both literal and abstract. Along with this, the idea of a family unit is
explored through these births and deaths.
As can be seen in The Grapes of Wrath, the Joads are a very tight knit family. Yet on their trip to
California, they experience many losses and additions to their family. In general, Steinbeck s novel
abides by the circle of life. When a birth occurs, a death follows, and when a death occurs, a birth
follows. However, in The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Chapter Thirteen, Grampa does die, as he was never truly the same once he left his land. This is
because the land goes back to Grampa s ancestry, and losing the land is like losing a family member.
This is the Joad family s first run in with death on their journey, yet Ma Joad still manages to keep the
family together.
Moreover, in Chapter Thirteen, as the Joad family continues on their journey, they meet the Wilson
family. The two families decide to carry on with their trip together. It is at this point that Steinbeck
follows the pattern of the circle of life. Steinbeck begins by writing about the rebirth of Tom Joad.
Next, Grampa dies. Following this, there is a birth for the Joads when they add the Wilson family to
their own. However, as previously stated, in order to represent the hardships of the journey, many
more deaths than births occur in the novel. In Chapter Eighteen alone, Noah leaves the family, the
Joads continue on without the Wilson family, and Granma dies. It may seem like these losses would
tear the family apart, but Ma Joad understands the concept of family, and tries her hardest to keep the
family as one unit. For example, Ma Joad sits up all night with Granma s dead body, jut so the family
can cross the border. The fambly hadda get acrost (312).

Civil Liberties And Civil Rights Essay
Civil Liberties and Civil Rights are two terms that are often used interchangeably in America. Since
the founding of our nation there has always been the debate of the limit of government and what rights
were guaranteed to each individual. Many of the architects of our government feared that national
government could one day become too powerful and begin to infringe on the individual rights of the
citizens. As a result, a Bill of Rights was added to our constitution. The Bill of Rights serves as a
guide of what the government cannot do. Civil Liberties simply establish precedent on what rights the
United States government cannot abridge on. Civil Rights, on the other hand applies to the rights of
individuals. Over the history of our nation the question of civil rights has found itself becoming a
pillar of our legal system and has been very instrumental in our quest to become a more perfect union .
In recent history one civil liberty that has caused a continual controversial debate is the second
amendment, in addition to how it applies to gun control measures that are being proposed in order to
decrease the level of mass shootings. The second amendment clearly defines the intention of
individuals to have the right to bear arms. In order to understand why gun control advocates have
failed to secure effective gun control legislation, we must explore the reasoning why the second
amendment is interpreted the way it is and should Americans be allowed to own guns? The

1517. Albert, the Archbishop of Mainz and Magdeburg, received a copy of the document the same

Virtual Reality is seen as a new technology that is starting to take off. However, that is not the case, as
virtual reality is older than the average college student. In 1957 a man named Morton Heilig invented
a device called the Sensorama . Morton Heilig s device, consisted [of] the following elements: A
viewing screen within an enclosed booth which displayed stereoscopic images. Oscillating fans. Audio
output (speakers). [and] Devices which emitted smells (Virtual Reality, 2016). Morton s device is
much different than what one expects when they hear virtual reality, but that is where the idea started
at. Now, when thinking of virtual reality, someone imagines a headset that hooks up to an electronic
device and encompasses the user into a virtual world. Well, the headset style device was invented in
1968 when Ivan Sutherland created a head unit; however, it was so heavy that it was meant to be
suspended and the user would place their head inside. The head unit connected to a computer and set
the user to that virtual world people have come to expect. In the 1980 s companies like NASA started
to dabble into the virtual reality to, research into new forms of human computer interaction (HCI)
(Virtual Reality, 2016), as well as other projects. With NASA starting to use the technology, the
popularity sky rocketed in the 1990 s. There was buzz surrounding what this new technology could
do, and people just kept feeding

American Involvement in Ww1
World War I (WWI), which was predominantly called the World War or the Great War from its
occurrence until 1939, and the First World War or World War I thereafter, was a major war centered in
Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. It involved all the world s
great powers, which were assembled in two opposing alliances: the Allies (centered on the Triple
Entente of the United Kingdom, France and Russia) and the Central Powers (originally centered on
the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria Hungary and Italy). These alliances both reorganized (Italy
fought for the Allies), and expanded as more nations entered the war. Ultimately more than 70 million

Anglo French trenches were only intended to be temporary before their forces broke through German
defenses. Both sides tried to break the stalemate using scientific and technological advances. On 22
April 1915 at the Second Battle of Ypres, the Germans (violating the Hague Convention) used
chlorine gas for the first time on the Western Front. Algerian troops retreated when gassed and a six
kilometer (four mile) hole opened in the Allied lines that the Germans quickly exploited, taking
Kitchener s Wood. Canadian soldiers closed the breach at the Second Battle of Ypres. At the Third
Battle of Ypres, Canadian and ANZAC troops took the village of Passchendaele. At the start of the
war, the German Empire had cruisers scattered across the globe, some of which were subsequently
used to attack Allied merchant shipping. The British Royal Navy systematically hunted them down,
though not without some embarrassment from its inability to protect Allied shipping. For example, the
German detached light cruiser SMS Emden, part of the East Asia squadron stationed at Tsingtao,
seized or destroyed 15 merchantmen, as well as sinking a Russian cruiser and a French destroyer.
However, most of the German East Asia squadron consisting of the armored cruisers Scharnhorst and

White Television History
The transition from radio to black and white television enlightened people since they were able to get
live footage of events Although television was first regarded by many as radio with pictures, public
reaction to the arrival of TV was strikingly different from that afforded the advent of radio
(Thompson). Television start was in 1948 to 1959 which was termed The Golden Age due to the fact
that there was advances in technology and was considered a period of higher quality Until the fall of
1948, regularly scheduled programming on the four networks the American Broadcasting Company
(ABC), the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS; later CBS Corporation), the National Broadcasting
Co. (NBC), and the DuMont Television Network, which folded in 1955 was scarce (Thompson).

formally sold as sets that came with an antenna and knobs to change the channels or raise the volume.
This time was one of innovation and there was no stopping what was to come Nevertheless, the age of

Lena Haloway Quotes
Lena Haloway is a 17 year old girl who was lied to her entire life; now she s going to get revenge.
Pandemonium, by Lauren Oliver, is a fiction book. It s a relatable story about a young girl trying to
get through her life. Pandemonium is a good book, but it is considered a young adult (Keller 3) book.
It doesn t stretch your mind as much as some teachers would like a summer book to do. Even though
this is a book for younger people, it is still a terrific choice for a summer read. Hatred is a high tower,
(Oliver 166). This quote from Pandemonium describes how this novel is relatable. Everyone feels
some type of hatred towards something in their lives. This book being relatable helps people today;
they may not be going through the exact same thing as Lena Haloway, mainly because this was a
futuristic book, and there is no such thing as the Wilds (Oliver 9) or a resistance (Oliver 196), but they
can see how she handled the hate. Thus, this book is relatable to many young girls because it is an
adolescent book. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Big Joe Turner s Miss Rhythm Speaks Out
Under the guidelines for covers Ruth Brown established in her article, Miss Rhythm Speaks Out , the
cover version of Shake Rattle and Roll from Billy Haley and the Comets would be considered
legitimate. Due to the racial hardships of the time period, you can say that Big Joe Turner didn t
receive the credit or attention he deserved for the originality of his version, and Billy Haley is
indebted to him for that, but Haley s version is just as valid under her guidelines. Ruth Brown wouldn
t view Haley s version as a bare faced duplicate with no artistic merit whatsoever because it isn t
exactly note for note Turner s version (Ruth Brown, p. 12). Haley s version moves at a much faster

Cover songs were more a measure of the racial differences in the United States. Back then, many
covers signified racial segregation. Like Ruth Brown says, many African American artists accepted the
fact that white American artists were going to take their original piece and make it their own. Today,
this would be a major issue and verge on the issue of copyright infringement. However, back then,
perhaps it had a positive impact on both the white and black artists white artists get to have success on
the performance they create while African American artists gained the extra exposure their song
needed at the time to get popular. While many of us today may not agree with this concept, American
society and the industry would have only properly functioned like this. Many times like in the case of
Shake Rattle and Roll , the covers aren t close to the original piece. Therefore, both the originals and
the covers were equally different versions of the same thing, so both artists deserved credit. However,
in the case of songs like A Little Bird Told Me by Paula Watson and the cover by Evelyn Knight, both
versions were the same song note for note. And even though this was considered fair game at the time,
it was truly unfair of Knight to use Watson s exact material, and the cover song should have not been
successful or even released. Racial inequality defined this era in

Farenheit 451- Lit By Ray Bradbury
Fahrenheit 451 Lit. Critique
The title of the book I read was Fahrenheit 451. The book was written by Ray Bradbury and was
published in 1951. This book is about a dystopian America where there is extreme censorship and any
media (mainly books) that questions the government is burned by a branch called the Firemen. The
main character whose name is Guy Montag is a fireman who begins to realize that what he s doing is
wrong after meeting a young girl named Clarisse. As the book goes on it is revealed that Montag had
been stashing books in his vents for a long time and tried to show them to his wife, but she doesn t
want anything to do with it. His wife Mildred towards the end of the book actually ends up reporting
him to the Firemen, when she does this Montag is at work and shows up on the call to witness his wife
get into a taxi and leave him. Then to throw salt in the wound the Fireman Captain Beatty forces
Montag to burn his own house to the ground before being arrested for possession of illegal media, but
after Montag burns the house he turns on Beatty burning him with the flamethrower and knocking out
the other two firemen before fleeing. After having finished reading it I thought that this book was
really good, it kept my attention the whole time and had a big surprise at the end. (The full ending is
not included in the summary.) This book also has many sad moments that let you relate to the
protagonist.
My favorite character in this book is Guy Montag. The reason that

Involuntary Outpatient Commitment Essay
Involuntary Outpatient Commitment In 1955, over 559,000 individuals resided in inpatient psychiatric
hospitals. By 1995, however, the number had drastically diminished to 69,000, (National Health
Policy Forum, 2000). This drastic reduction was largely due to the discovery of antipsychotic
medications in the 1950s, and the deinstitutionalization movement of the 1960s, wherein several
thousands of mentally ill individuals were released from psychiatric institutions to return to their
communities for treatment. Mental health centers (MHCs) were conceptualized during
deinstitutionalization to provide treatment to these newly released mentally ill persons in their
communities. Although efforts were well intended, the MHCs failed to serve the ... Show more

The Olmstead Act requires public agencies to provide services in the most integrated setting
appropriate to the needs of qualified individuals with disabilities. Further, the act mandates that states
place qualified individuals with mental illnesses in community settings, rather than in institutions.
Being placed under IOC is contingent upon whether or not such placement is appropriate, affected
persons do not oppose such placement, and the state can reasonably accommodate the placement,
taking into account resources available to the state and needs of others with disabilities, (The Center
for an Accessible Society, 1999). In conclusion, the Olmstead Act provided for the legal groundwork
to both provide and enforce IOC. Research has shown IOC to be more effective when combined with
additional components. Examples of these components include psychiatric advance directives,
Assertive Case Management (ACM), representative payees, conditional release,
conservatorship/guardianship, and mental health courts. Psychiatric advance directives are legal
documents that permit mentally ill individuals to authorize and specify treatment in anticipation of
future periods of mental incapacity. ACM consists of mental health teams that actively assist with

The Gas Leak Tragedy Of Bhopal
The Gas Leak Tragedy of Bhopal, India is considered the worst industrial disaster in history.
Originally, the Bhopal pesticide plants were to be some of the best and most beautiful plants which
would have huge production capabilities. However, in 1984 there was a massive leak of methyl
isocyanate (MIC) which spread out to local communities and has negatively affected the health of
hundreds of thousands of people. The reason why the pesticide plant was created was for the Green
Revolution in the 1960 s. Traditional farming methods in India were changing to high yield seed
varieties which needed more fertilizers and pesticides (Eckerman, 2005), to meet the increasing food
demand. Pesticide production was originally sourced in Europe, however because of new knowledge
and protests from environmental activists, it became restricted. (Eckerman, 2005, pg. 24).
Consequently, pesticide production was outsourced to India because of fewer regulations and cheaper
labor (Kovel, 2002). The pesticide that the Bhopal plants created was Carbaryl, and this pesticide
serves as a neurotoxin that controls pests such as moths, beetles, ants, mosquitoes, ticks and
cockroaches (National Pesticide Information Center, 2003). The chemicals inside the pesticide are a
Cholinesterase Inhibitor, which inhibits the cholinesterase enzyme from degrading acetylcholin,
eventually leading to interference in the host s nervous system (Gilbert, 2014, ¶ 3).

The Philosophical View Of Empiricism
Today in society, many people are free to follow which ever philosophical view that they feel is right
for them. Each philosophical view has a different set of beliefs, and many philosophers went through
great lengths to prove that the philosophical view of their choice was the best one. In this paper I will
be talking about two philosophical theories. The first one is called Empiricism, and it was made
famous by a philosopher named David Hume. Empiricism states that our knowledge should come
from sensory experience, impressions, and observation. The other philosophical view I will be taking
about is called Rationalism. Many people who don t agree with empiricism lean more towards

With thoughts, your mind thinks about certain feelings, but you don t experience them first hand. With
impression, you experience things such as hearing, seeing, and feeling first hand, instead of just
thinking about them. For example, an impression can be used to describe a man who is in fit of anger ,
and a man who is thinking about anger, but not actually in a fit of anger would be considered to be a
thought. A thought can also be considered as an idea. Hume describe ideas as being less vivacious than
impressions . He feels that impressions are drawn from memory or imagination, thus causing them to
be less lively and vivid. Our mind consist of many complex ideas, and according to Hume these ideas
are the things that influence our imagination. He claims that complex ideas are combined into one big
idea, thus resulting to a single idea. For example, when we think of a golden mountain, our mind use
the memories we have of the color gold, and the memories we have of a mountain, and combine the
two into a single image of a golden mountain. Another example is our idea of God. When we think of
the supremely good and intelligent nature of God, we are doing nothing more than, comparing his
goodness to the goodness of a human beings. Hume claims that we can only have knowledge of things
that we have experienced before. Since a blind man can t see, his knowledge of the colors will be very
limited. The only way

Migration And Racial Tension Of Australia
Migration and racial tension
I believe that the two topics that I have chosen relate to each other in many ways. The racial tension
came from the migrating races to Australia, and the issues that the Australians of the time had with the
new people . The migration occurred because there was a growing business in a new country, there
were more opportunities for trade and everyone wanted to try their luck on the gold fields. I found the
migrating story s from the Chinese to be more of an interesting theme. This is the same with the racial
tension, the mass groups of Chinese were the main targets with the racism.
Most migrants that came to Australia to grab a share of the gold rush, left behind family and home. In
traditional Chinese culture this was particularly difficult for them to come from a parent s heavy
focused family system, to an alien country to live.
The Chinese people that came to Australia were typically men brining there family over with them to
work for an income that would be big enough to support them. The wife however was left at home to
forfill the role of looking after her in laws in this time. The family would have to work for them
aswell, and send a percentage of there profit over.
As the population of chinses immergents started to climb, they were starting to become apart of
population statistics. If you were Chinese by birth and you were outside NSW, the governments of the
other states took advantage of you and made you pay a special reentry

Alexander The Great s Influence On The World
Alexander the Great Occasionally history shows that the world does not have many people that could
be entered in the history. And Alexander the Great was one of these people. During his childhood
Alexander had great teachers who taught him how to use and how to choose great politics, diplomacy
and, how to win the war if that day would come. For many years Alexander the Great studied how to
control everything and how to be ready to do anything that might be needed. At the age of sixteen he
had to become a king of big kingdom, because his father, Philip, was in the war with Byzantium.
Many people believed in Alexander because they knew that he was different from other children in his
age, he did not care about bodily pleasures or anything like that, however, he had infinitely ambition
which created him a good leader. Alexander strengthened his position in the power, he tamed people
that were trying to make a revolution to take power in their hands. To get support from wealthy and
other people in Alexander s kingdom, he canceled taxes, and killed other people that might claim for
the king s position. Alexander was a great leader, and had plans to enter the war not only with some
kingdoms, but to capture and control all kingdoms and all lands, to have the great power without a
trace. Alexander the Great ruled his kingdom as a king that had tunneled his skills and had a good deal
of experience in the past. He was thankful that his father, Philip, gave him the best teachers

The Disocial Model Of Disability
1.1 Outline the history and development of the medical, social and psychosocial models of disability
The medical model of disability With the Age of Enlightenment in the 18th century there came a more
scientific understanding of the causes of disability and with it a sense of confidence in
medical science s ability to cure, or rehabilitate disabled people. Some disabled people were deemed
incurable and placed in long stay institutions and special schools. A notion of normality was based on
assessments of disability against normality (what a person can t do, instead of what a person can do.)
This does not take away the very necessary role of medical science in keeping many disabled people
alive/reducing pain and discomfort. The medical model sees disabled people as the problem. They
need to be adapted to fit into the world as it is. If this isn t possible, then they should have only their
basic needs met. The emphasis is on dependence. The disability is focused on, rather than the needs of
the person. The power to change disabled people appeared to lie with in the medical profession, with
talk of cures, normalisation and science. Often, disabled people s lives are handed over to these
professionals. Their decisions affect where disabled people go to school/what support they get/where
they live/if they can work. The Disability Movement points out how the built environment/society
imposes limitations on disabled people. Medical model thinking would say

Non-Surgical Hair Replacement Pros And Cons
If you are a man and have already lost a large portion of the hair on your head, then you may just not
feel like yourself anymore. While others may tell you that you still look attractive with less hair, in the
end, it is how you feel about your own appearance that counts. If you just don t like how you look now
that you have hair loss, then there are several ways that you can obtain a full head of hair and finally
feel like yourself again. Here are two quick options and their pros and cons.
1. Surgical Hair Replacement
Surgical hair replacement is a medical procedure where a surgeon first cuts off a strip of your scalp
from an area where hair is still abundant. The surgeon then takes donor active hair follicles from the
strip of hair and transplants them to areas of your scalp where hair no longer grows on its own. This
technique is often called a hair transplant .

Nonsurgical Hair Replacement
While there have been non surgical ways to replace hair for a while, such as toupees or hair growth
medications, none lasted long or were proven to work very well. However, true non surgical hair
replacement is a great technique to replace your hair that is relatively affordable and works.
Nonsurgical hair replacement first involves a custom made hair system being produced for you. This
system is made of a a polymer and/or mesh base that is measured to fit your scalp perfectly. Polymer
bases are more durable and less expensive, but mesh ones keep your scalp cooler, so this decision can
be a tough one.
Then, human or synthetic hair is chosen to match your natural hair perfectly. Human hair is the most
natural looking and feeling, but today s synthetic hair can also look and feel very natural when made
well. Synthetic hair is more affordable than human hair. The hair is then attached to the base made for
your scalp in a very natural pattern to mimic how your original hair looked, and the base can then be
adhered to your scalp by you or a

This essay starts by capturing the attention of the audience by surprises, that first shocks and then
causes the readers to think critically about what he is really saying. Not only about his morals and
values, but also about his motivations and policies explaining his proposal. Firstly, Swift persuades
and informs the reader with his attempt to find out a fair cheap, and easy method for taking the

argues, by using economic reasoning as well as a self righteous moral stance to find a way to turn this

his conclusion is that implementation of this project will help solve Irelands social, political, and
economic problems more so than any other proposals. This work is a satirical hyperbole which was
meant to mock the heartless attitudes toward the poor, as well as the British policies toward the Irish
in general. While Swift was an astute economic thinker, and the grim irony of this piece of his own

and unemployment was increasing by the day Germany look for radical change and it was Adolf
Hitler. Behind him his cult of personality. he formed it using propaganda showing Germany a picture
of a perfect life with where you have a happy wife at home and the men work and the children are
perfect giving Germany a sense of nationalism. He sometimes would use propaganda portray that
Hitler was larger than life and his ideas of politics and to impose his own beliefs in anti semitism to

Abolishment In Frankenstein
Despite how extravagantly different the creation scene is in Shelley s novel compared to what is
presented on screen, there is little to say on the subject. As already mentioned in the introduction, the
tradition of exuberant, showy creation scenes didn t begin with the original textit{Frankenstein}
(1931), but with the 1910 edition, where it lends half of its runtime to the conjuration of the monster.
Each iteration of Frankenstein thereafter copies this extravagant method of portraying the creation
scene, and as they do so, knowledge of Shelley s minimal description is lost. First, we must explore
why her version of events isn t inclusive of the embellishment and indulgence on screen.

In Shelley s text, the scene consists of a few ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet he acknowledges that this moment is not one to celebrate, and thus compensates for this using
other methods, turning the showy scene from a contradiction to a juxtaposition that emphasises the
monstrosity of not only the monster, but Victor s actions in creating it: First, the monster lunges from a
great copper sarcophagus filled with water to make it a kind of womb. After he lands sprawling in the
spill tank under it, Victor lifts him up, vainly tries to show him how to walk, then ties him standing to
a set of chains. But when the struggling creature is struck by a falling piece of wood and shortly goes
limp, Victor concludes that he himself has killed this luckless heir to massive birth defects. and that
this evil must be destroyed...forever. footcite{James Heffernan, Looking at the Monster: Frankenstein
and Film pp.143} This departure from the novel highlights Victor as a more paternal figure than the
text implies, making a point of the undercurrent of dread the scene should evoke, yet contrivedly
conveying Victor s repulsion at the creature in this scene, Victor is less repulsed by the creature, as
Shelley s text strongly emphasises, but more toward his own actions. It is only when Victor wakes up
to the sight of the lumbering creature in the next scene does he cry out No! . This decision creates a
confusing tone where it could initially be misconstrued by the audience that Branagh s Victor is
merely startled by the presence of a monster he had presumed dead, muddling up the message of
Victor s regret and of the repercussions of rebirth that Shelley intends on

A Comparing Theme Of Frankenstein And Northanger Abbey
Theme of Frankenstein and Northanger Abbey
Have you ever thought that Frankenstein and Northanger Abbey can have the same theme? They
might be two different stories but, still be connected somehow. Frankenstein Victor Frankenstein took
his love of books to the fullest. After going to college, he took his learning to make a monster.
Northanger Abbey Catherine Morland was a teenager that did not have a lot of friends but she loves to
read Gothic novels. These stories has the same similarities but still has a different understanding over
the story. They both lost their best friends. They also has family that only connects with them only
sometimes.
Victor had a friend named Henry. After a friendless monster killed him, Victor, then became friendless
too. I saw the lifeless form of Henry Clerval stretched before me. (Shelly 223) The monster killed
Henry because Victor promises to make the monster a partner. At the last moment, Victor decided to
not finish the partner. Then Victor destroys the partner and the monster gets really mad. After you read
that part of the story you should always keep in mind to always keep your promise. If you don t
something bad might happen. Henry was the only main friend to take care of Victor when he got sick.
He was his family when his main family was absent. The next paragraph is going to connect with
Catherine losing her friend Isabella but, it is not as painful as Victor. Catherine had a best friend
named Isabella. After a lot of

White Tailed Deer Article Summary
In the journal article White Tailed Deer as Keystone Species within Forest Habitats of Virginia the
authors, William J. McShea and John H. Rappole, go in depth to how white tailed Deer affect the
abundance and distribution of vertebrate species in Virginia. The authors hypothesized that White
Tailed Deer influence the arrangement of winged creatures and warm blooded animals indirectly
through changing of the natural surroundings and specifically through the utilization of shared
nourishment sorts. The authors tested this hypothesis by testing four different areas in Virginia within
the Shenandoah National Park, the National Zoo s Conservation and the Research Center in Front

John F Kennedy s Assassination
On the tragic day of November 22nd, 1963, John Fitzgerald Kennedy s assassination, America stopped
and stood still. This tragic day in American history will never be forgotten. John Fitzgerald Kennedy
had high hopes in the United States for different amounts of things. The 35th and youngest president
to this day of the United States was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald, other conspiracies say that the CIA,
Lyndon B. Johnson or the Mafia could have done it too.
John Fitzgerald Biography

He was in the hospital for a month. In 1936 John graduated from Choate, a boarding school in
Connecticut. In an election year in which Republicans gained control of both Houses of Congress;
Kennedy nevertheless won a narrow victory, giving him considerable clout within the Democratic
Party. According to one of his aides, the decisive factor in Kennedy s victory was his personality.
Shortly after his election, Kennedy met a beautiful young woman named Jacqueline Bouvier at a
dinner party and, in his own words, leaned across the asparagus and asked her for a date. They were
married on September 12, 1953. Jack and Jackie Kennedy had three children: Caroline Kennedy, John
F. Kennedy Jr. and Patrick Kennedy.
John Kennedy s Presidency
John Kennedy became the youngest man to be elected as the U.S president. On November 8, 1960, he
narrowly beat Richard Nixon, who was the vice president to become the 35th U.S president. John
Kennedy chose Lyndon Johnson, who was the Senate majority leader as his running mate, and later on
to become the vice president. During his inauguration on January 20, 1961, John Kennedy inspired
Americans to become active citizen members by stating, Ask what not your country can do for you,
but what you can do for your country (Collins 5). The greatest achievement during his three year term
as U.S

Poverty In Guatemala
Poverty in Guatemala
Well over 50 percent of the population in Guatemala lives on incomes that are below the poverty line.
(Orphan Outreach) This is a reality that I was able to experience on my mission trip to Guatemala. The
issue of poverty was evident through the homes people lived in, the clothes they wore, and where they
were attending school during the day. This is one of many problems that are faced in the country of
Guatemala. When looking at the amount of poverty in Guatemala, it is important to consider the
effects of poverty, its moral implications, the ways we can respond, and the benefits of helping. Sixty
percent of the population in Guatemala is illiterate. This is largely due to the low quality of education.
Only 40 percent of children find themselves able to finish schooling because their families are unable
to afford it. (Mayan Families) Instead of going to school, these children can be found at home working
and helping to earn a living for their family. It is not only the kids unable to go to school facing
problems; those attending school are facing problems as well. The schools that these children are
attending are not helping them very much because the teachers do not have access to the training and
resources that they need. Only 1 out of every 10 schools has access to books (Cooperative for
Education). The rest of them are unable to get them because they do not have the access or money that
they need. This factor is leading to the large

The Literary Modernism Time Period
The literary modernism time period was a movement in literature that started in the early 1890s and
was very eventful. During this era there were many considerable events taking place such as The
Great War (also known as World War One ), which started in 1914. This War lasted for four years and
finally ended in 1918, but its effects lasted much longer. The financial instability of Europe and death
caused by this First World War gave people a sense of patriotism that unified them. It made people
think of not only the society as a whole, but themselves as individuals ( Modernism. ). This new
individualist mindset made people think more about their thoughts and actions than they had ever
previously done before. Because individuals thought ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Whistleblowers Research Paper
It is popularly believed, even by presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, that whistleblowers only break
promises of the nation, and release critically secret information to the everyday public. Many believe
that they should be punished for this violation of secrecy. Yet, perhaps what they release could be
saving the country and government. Secrets in government of war and finances can be detrimental to
the health of the United States of America from the spread of conspiracy theories and due to the fact
that the government, which should be protecting the people, is sneaking behind citizen s backs and
making their own worldwide decisions. Whistleblowers are needed to create a prosperous and stable
country if our government is going to be this corrupt with their secrets.
Corruption with government secrets is a main topic as to why whistleblowers are needed. There is a
fine line between what the government needs to hold and what the government should share, but it is
popularly believed that the government needs to release more so it can actually feel like the people get
their own say. Whistleblowers don t just believe that there are huge amounts of secrets that need to be
released, but they only say what must be said. Edward Snowden was a technical assistant who worked
for the NSA and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even the Whistleblower Protection Act was about government workers who planned to release
information due to the fact that it s a corrupt idea to hold secret must go through a process with the
government to work out the problem which probably wouldn t draw anyone to not illegally sell
information. The IG for Department of Justice Michael Horowitz claimed that all whistleblowers want
to do is release information that they will think help the country to know. So far, the this has been the
case, and many supporters have come out to say that the revealed secret holds use at how the
government was being corrupt for holding on to

  • 2. The Effects Of Polygraph Tests On The United States... While the courts have been slow to accept polygraphs, others have embraced them. Polygraph tests have gained general acceptance in the scientific fields of psychology and psychophysiology and in the areas of those disciplines devoted to credibility assessment. Psychophysiological credibility assessment, commonly known as polygraph testing, has long passed the experimental stage. The United States government has been, and continues to be, a heavy user of polygraph tests. Numerous federal agencies use the polygraph to investigate criminal acts and to vet employees. Some Federal agencies that use the polygraph include the following: Federal Bureau of Investigation; Secret Service; Drug Enforcement Agency; all of the Armed Services; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That begs the question of how accurate are juries at detecting truth and how accurate is eyewitness testimony? The DOD Polygraph Institute also teaches a course on how to offer polygraph results at trial. It has been estimated that the Federal government employs about 500 polygraph examiners and spends approximately $25 million per year on examiner salaries alone. These numbers have increased dramatically since the establishment of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. When you look at how prevalent the use of the polygraph is within the United States government (and the justice system) it is mind boggling that most courts are unwilling to consider the evidence as credible. The Science of a Polygraph In practice, virtually all polygraph instruments record measures from at least three physiological systems that are controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Recordings are usually made of palmar sweating (commonly known as the galvanic skin response or the electrodermal response), relative blood pressure (obtained from an inflated cuff on the upper arm), and respiration (obtained from volumetric sensors placed around the chest and/or abdomen). Some field polygraph instruments also make measurements of peripheral vasomotor activity and monitor the subject s movements. The basis of polygraphy or psychophysiological credibility assessment is a scientific theory that can be and has been tested with the methods of science. Any conscious effort ... • 3. Asbestos And Its Effects On Australia Asbestos had been widely used in many industries around the world due to its versatility, strength, fire resistant and insulating properties of the fibres. They are used in the manufacturing industry as vinyl floor tiles, electrical components, gasket products, brake linings and disc pads. The three main type of asbestos, white, blue and brown can also be found in cement sheeting and piping in the construction industry. However, the use of asbestos in Australia and many other countries had been ban due to its known health effects which is include pleural diseases, lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma. Despite being banned in Australia nowadays, asbestos can still be found in most of older construction, residential and commercial area as well as abandoned mining site. Studies show that the building workers, specifically the plumbers, gas fitters, carpenters and electricians the highest risk of getting mesothelioma, disease from asbestos fibres (Peto, J., Hodgson, J.T., Matthews, F.T., Jacqueline, R., 1995). According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the number of mesotheliomas cases are increasing and expected to reach 18000 in recent. Though the asbestos is known as hazardous material, it can only affect the health if the asbestos fibres become airborne and are inhaled. The primary route for the asbestos to enter the body is through the inhalation processes of the contaminated air (Safework Australia, 2011). Unusually, small fibrous particles of ... • 4. The Muscular Dystrophy Was First Discovered By Guillaume... Duchenne muscular dystrophy was first discovered by Guillaume Benjamin Amand Duchenne in the 1860 s, but due to lack of medical knowledge little was known until the 1980 s. It was in 1986 that researchers that were supported by the MDA, muscular dystrophy association, identified the particular X chromosome that leads to DMD, Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Dystrophin is the protein that is associated with the gene and was named in 1987.The DMD gene is the second largest gene to date, and it produces dystrophin.(Genome, 2013) Lack of the protein Dystrophin in the muscle cells causes them to weaken and become fragile. (MDA, 2015). DMD is an inherited disorder, but there are rare cases where it can spontaneously appear in a child with no previous family history due to a random mutation in moms X chromosome. DMD is a gender specific disease that only appears in males. Females are carriers in their X Chromosome and they have the chance of passing the disease on to their children, 50 50 to a girl and 50 50 to a boy. If the girl does receive the gene she becomes a carrier. If the boy gets the gene then he has the disease. Males do not pass on the gene to their children because they pass on the Y chromosome and the disease is X specific. Some female carriers have indicators of being a carrier by having symptoms of cardiomyopathy, shortness of breath during exercise, and muscle weakness in the back, arms, and legs. There have been very rare instances where a girl has not received a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Rapa Nui Theory Easter Island, or Rapa Nui as the island s natives would say, is a small remote island taking up approximately 65 square miles of Chilean territory. Rapa Nui acquired the name Easter Island when a dutch explorer, Jacob Roggeveen, and his voyagers came across the island by mistake while enroute for a different island on Easter Sunday in 1722. This volcanic island is located over 2,000 miles off the coast of Chile, but still remains part of the Polynesian Islands. Being founded by Polynesians, the island soon became heavily influenced by Polynesian culture. Many myths and traditions carry out the history of the island before Dutch explorers discovered Rapa Nui and conquered the land but some things of Rapa Nui remain a mystery. However, one of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many theories are passed as myth for their outlandish spiritual explanations. For example, a myths tells how the statues descended down from the heavens and once roamed the lands of Rapa Nui before the first inhabitants had taken over. However, more logical and realistic speculations linger in the minds of archaeologists and historians of today. The most plausible theory to date, after archaeologists performed a demonstrative experiment, concludes that the Moai were built inside quarries dug into the side of the Rano Raraku volcano.on the eastern edge of the island. They began as very large, rectangular stone blocks, laying out flat with a base below them to hold them to the bedrock. In this phase, a master carver and his crew of approximately 15 carvers would begin working on the face, just barely carving the outline of the facial features with a pick known as a toki in Rapa Nui. After a full outline of the face was roughly carved, the master carver and his team would then insert all the definitive attributes that would differentiate the various chiefs. This juncture of the Moai construction explains a suitable amount of knowledge to a small portion of how these statues were supposedly formed, but what still remains is how could they have been stood up and placed onto their ... The Role Of Sports For Athletes And Women Athletes Marketisation and commoditisation provide leverage for powerful nations to assert their dominance over their sport competitors by, for instance, buying their best athletes from the dominated countries and sometimes offering those athletes citizenship. There are instances when international corporate entities sponsor and own clubs in other countries, make all management decisions, and secure profits which they return to their home countries thereby leaving host countries further impoverished (Nauright 2012:54).The above global pattern has not favored most womens national and local teams as most corporate entities prefer to sponsor national mens teams. Local leagues face serious challenges due to inability to raise funds as a result of reduced quality of play resulting in poor stadium attendance that mean fewer facilities, and as indicated earlier, this lack of facilities has a trickle down effect on accessibility of facilities for women in sports. Due to globalisation, national teams go into a stage of dependent development an example is the English soccer teams as a result of the presence of foreign players in the league system denying most of the local clubs eventually has a negative effect the national team (Maguire 2013:200). Globalisation has also impacted on local sport participation by way of administrative practices. For example, Carter (2002) documents the rise of global administrative bodies (such as FIFA and OIC) and FIVF (Vanderhoof 2011) that oversee and regulate various sports. Similarly, MacAloon (1984) discusses how the modern Olympic movement highlights the diffusion of sports forms and organisation across the globe. These organisations also continue empowering males (e.g., the amount of money FIFA gives to mens soccer teams during the World Cups is greater than the amount they give to womens teams). Such inequities sometimes serve as deterrents to female participants and thereby compromise efforts to create equality between the sexes (Grainey 2012:23). • 7. The Bluest Eye Research Paper The rape of Pecola is a tragic occurrence. In The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison focuses heavily on the topic of her rape. Morrison shows how the rape has affected Pecola by creating a powerful and compelling tale, allowing the reader to connect with Pecola and better empathize with her. Morrison s stylistic choices and use of powerful language make her story even more commanding and eye catching and further the reader s understanding of Pecola s misery and their sympathy towards her. Morrison uses word choice and sentence structure during the scene where Pecola is raped to emphasize the disturbing nature of the action. Morrison gives the reader a window into Cholly s thoughts right before he penetrates her. Morrison writes, He wanted to fuck her tenderly (Pp. 162 3). The juxtaposition of the words fuck and tenderly create a striking and disgusting image that helps to convey the true horror of the rape. Fuck is related to violence and cruelty while ... Morrison compares Pecola to a plot of black dirt to show that Cholly treats her like he would dirt, doing anything that he wants to it. By writing that Cholly had dropped his seeds in his own plot of black dirt , Morrison causes the reader to more fully understand the power and horror of the rape. This wording is extremely effective in showing how awful the rape is, because it shows Pecola as being reduced to something as powerless and as meaningless as black dirt instead of merely stating that she was raped. In addition, by showing how Pecola is objectified and treated awfully instead of just saying that, Morrison is able to draw more sympathy from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Based on the Unemployment Statistics by Gene Smiley, we can see that the First New Deal did help bring the unemployment rate down, as did the Second Deal. In fact, the total decrease during those time periods was 11.5 percent. This is a great improvement, but it was not permanent. When the Second New Deal ended after 1937, the unemployment rate skyrocketed once again, increasing from 9.1 percent to 12.3 percent (Smiley). The New Deal could never hold its own weight, so why could it handle the collapsing economy as well? The answer is that it could not, not for a long period of time at least. It would take 2 more years to bring the unemployment rate near where it was at the end of the Second New Deal programs, and another year after that to bring the rate below the 9.1 percent in 1937 (Smiley). The art that Kiefer created focused on a reconciliation with the shame and horror surrounding the holocaust, aimed aimed to redefine what it meant to be German in a post Nazi World (Smith). The piece I studied is located at the MoMa in San Francisco and is entitled Shulamite . Shulamite is a historical painting of a Nazi Memorial Site, which Kiefer created it in 1983. In this painting, Kiefer transformed the architecture of a site which was meant to honor Nazi heroes into a memorial for their victims. Kiefer uses some very interesting aesthetic techniques to reflect the intense emotions of that time and to reflect the rage, grief, and shame that Germans felt in response to the Holocaust. His intention was to reconcile with the country s dark past through memorializing the persecuted while painting the country as no longer representative of it s dark past. The piece displays a cavernous interior with a series of dark arches that recede towards some flickering flames. These huge bricks and arches make the hall resemble a sort of dungeon or a sort of oven. The palette he used is limited to solely to shades of black, and brown. White paint is used to outline the crevices and edges of the bricks. The windows are dark black, and the ceiling is pitched black. Social Marketing Henderson (2001) also adds that: Embracing CSR would inevitably have consequences that would raise the cost of doing business, could well reduce revenues, and might also cause companies to sponsor low yielding investment which they would otherwise have turned down. In addition, organizations really motivated to apply and absorb CSR as a core value in its activities, would have to undergo a deep and internal change in its business operations and culture (employees, suppliers, offices) which represents a costly task and a time consuming mission. Blumenthal and Bergstrom (2003 cited in Comfort et al. 2007, pp.585) describe it as the convergence of branding and Corporate Social Responsibility . Lou and Bhattacharya (2009) maintain that CSR creates a level of Moral Capital , which then translates into Relational wealth with different stakeholders. This is based on brand faith and credibility with costumers, affective commitment among employees and regulators, trust among suppliers and higher attractiveness for investors in general. Consequently it is important for organizations, to understand that CSR initiatives need to be communicated and transmitted to its group of interest. As Blomqvist and Posner (2004 cited in Comfort et al. 2007, pp.584) propose: Companies are losing out because there is often little or no integration between CSR and Marketing departments and their respective strategies and unless CSR becomes central to the Marketing director s agenda, it will not have the desired effect and can potentially create a backlash. • 17. The Invention Of Black Holes Black Holes: Introduction: Without knowing the existence of black holes, we would still be stuck with many unanswered questions concerning physics. The most important one would deal with the correctness of Einstein s general relativity. When studying cosmology, various equations are used in order to explain the different phenomena that it contains, which are derived from general relativity. With this theory confirmed, all calculations appear more certain and confident. These objects are fairly important as they are one of the least understood by humans because they depict laws of physics that appear completely different from elsewhere in the universe, but, with study, can be more understood. Being completely invisible, it becomes very difficult to observe and study them. However, astronomers continue to develop different methods to do so. The question that remains is: What exactly is a black hole? How do they work and abide to the laws of physics? Simple answer, black holes are regions in space containing gravitational fields so strong that even light cannot escape them. As a result, they absorb anything that comes close and becomes trapped by its grip. Black holes come in various forms and sizes, which work differently depending on their properties. These properties, such as mass, charge and angular momentum, help in defining black holes and it is using this that it is possible to derive the math to understand them. Unity of a Family Explored in The Grapes of Wrath Essay Unity of a Family Explored in The Grapes of Wrath One would say that on a literal level The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck is about the Joad family s journey to California during The Dust Bowl. However, it is also about the unity of a family and the concept of birth and death, both literal and abstract. Along with this, the idea of a family unit is explored through these births and deaths. As can be seen in The Grapes of Wrath, the Joads are a very tight knit family. Yet on their trip to California, they experience many losses and additions to their family. In general, Steinbeck s novel abides by the circle of life. When a birth occurs, a death follows, and when a death occurs, a birth follows. However, in The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Chapter Thirteen, Grampa does die, as he was never truly the same once he left his land. This is because the land goes back to Grampa s ancestry, and losing the land is like losing a family member. This is the Joad family s first run in with death on their journey, yet Ma Joad still manages to keep the family together. Moreover, in Chapter Thirteen, as the Joad family continues on their journey, they meet the Wilson family. The two families decide to carry on with their trip together. It is at this point that Steinbeck follows the pattern of the circle of life. Steinbeck begins by writing about the rebirth of Tom Joad. Next, Grampa dies. Following this, there is a birth for the Joads when they add the Wilson family to their own. However, as previously stated, in order to represent the hardships of the journey, many more deaths than births occur in the novel. In Chapter Eighteen alone, Noah leaves the family, the Joads continue on without the Wilson family, and Granma dies. • 20. Civil Liberties And Civil Rights Essay Civil Liberties and Civil Rights are two terms that are often used interchangeably in America. Since the founding of our nation there has always been the debate of the limit of government and what rights were guaranteed to each individual. Many of the architects of our government feared that national government could one day become too powerful and begin to infringe on the individual rights of the citizens. As a result, a Bill of Rights was added to our constitution. The Bill of Rights serves as a guide of what the government cannot do. Civil Liberties simply establish precedent on what rights the United States government cannot abridge on. Civil Rights, on the other hand applies to the rights of individuals. Over the history of our nation the question of civil rights has found itself becoming a pillar of our legal system and has been very instrumental in our quest to become a more perfect union . In recent history one civil liberty that has caused a continual controversial debate is the second amendment, in addition to how it applies to gun control measures that are being proposed in order to decrease the level of mass shootings. The second amendment clearly defines the intention of individuals to have the right to bear arms. In order to understand why gun control advocates have failed to secure effective gun control legislation, we must explore the reasoning why the second amendment is interpreted the way it is and should Americans be allowed to own guns? However, that is not the case, as virtual reality is older than the average college student. In 1957 a man named Morton Heilig invented a device called the Sensorama . Morton Heilig s device, consisted [of] the following elements: A viewing screen within an enclosed booth which displayed stereoscopic images. Oscillating fans. Audio output (speakers). [and] Devices which emitted smells (Virtual Reality, 2016). Morton s device is much different than what one expects when they hear virtual reality, but that is where the idea started at. Now, when thinking of virtual reality, someone imagines a headset that hooks up to an electronic device and encompasses the user into a virtual world. Well, the headset style device was invented in 1968 when Ivan Sutherland created a head unit; however, it was so heavy that it was meant to be suspended and the user would place their head inside. The head unit connected to a computer and set the user to that virtual world people have come to expect. In the 1980 s companies like NASA started to dabble into the virtual reality to, research into new forms of human computer interaction (HCI) (Virtual Reality, 2016), as well as other projects. It s a relatable story about a young girl trying to get through her life. Pandemonium is a good book, but it is considered a young adult (Keller 3) book. It doesn t stretch your mind as much as some teachers would like a summer book to do. Even though this is a book for younger people, it is still a terrific choice for a summer read. Hatred is a high tower, (Oliver 166). This quote from Pandemonium describes how this novel is relatable. Everyone feels some type of hatred towards something in their lives. This book being relatable helps people today; they may not be going through the exact same thing as Lena Haloway, mainly because this was a futuristic book, and there is no such thing as the Wilds (Oliver 9) or a resistance (Oliver 196), but they can see how she handled the hate. This book is about a dystopian America where there is extreme censorship and any media (mainly books) that questions the government is burned by a branch called the Firemen. The main character whose name is Guy Montag is a fireman who begins to realize that what he s doing is wrong after meeting a young girl named Clarisse. As the book goes on it is revealed that Montag had been stashing books in his vents for a long time and tried to show them to his wife, but she doesn t want anything to do with it. His wife Mildred towards the end of the book actually ends up reporting him to the Firemen, when she does this Montag is at work and shows up on the call to witness his wife get into a taxi and leave him. Then to throw salt in the wound the Fireman Captain Beatty forces Montag to burn his own house to the ground before being arrested for possession of illegal media, but after Montag burns the house he turns on Beatty burning him with the flamethrower and knocking out the other two firemen before fleeing. By 1995, however, the number had drastically diminished to 69,000, (National Health Policy Forum, 2000). This drastic reduction was largely due to the discovery of antipsychotic medications in the 1950s, and the deinstitutionalization movement of the 1960s, wherein several thousands of mentally ill individuals were released from psychiatric institutions to return to their communities for treatment. • 30. The Gas Leak Tragedy Of Bhopal The Gas Leak Tragedy of Bhopal, India is considered the worst industrial disaster in history. Originally, the Bhopal pesticide plants were to be some of the best and most beautiful plants which would have huge production capabilities. However, in 1984 there was a massive leak of methyl isocyanate (MIC) which spread out to local communities and has negatively affected the health of hundreds of thousands of people. The reason why the pesticide plant was created was for the Green Revolution in the 1960 s. Traditional farming methods in India were changing to high yield seed varieties which needed more fertilizers and pesticides (Eckerman, 2005), to meet the increasing food demand. Pesticide production was originally sourced in Europe, however because of new knowledge and protests from environmental activists, it became restricted. (Eckerman, 2005, pg. 24). Consequently, pesticide production was outsourced to India because of fewer regulations and cheaper labor (Kovel, 2002). The pesticide that the Bhopal plants created was Carbaryl, and this pesticide serves as a neurotoxin that controls pests such as moths, beetles, ants, mosquitoes, ticks and cockroaches (National Pesticide Information Center, 2003). The chemicals inside the pesticide are a Cholinesterase Inhibitor, which inhibits the cholinesterase enzyme from degrading acetylcholin, eventually leading to interference in the host s nervous system (Gilbert, 2014, ¶ 3). A thought can also be considered as an idea. Hume describe ideas as being less vivacious than impressions . He feels that impressions are drawn from memory or imagination, thus causing them to be less lively and vivid. Our mind consist of many complex ideas, and according to Hume these ideas are the things that influence our imagination. He claims that complex ideas are combined into one big idea, thus resulting to a single idea. For example, when we think of a golden mountain, our mind use the memories we have of the color gold, and the memories we have of a mountain, and combine the two into a single image of a golden mountain. Another example is our idea of God. When we think of the supremely good and intelligent nature of God, we are doing nothing more than, comparing his goodness to the goodness of a human beings. The racial tension came from the migrating races to Australia, and the issues that the Australians of the time had with the new people . The migration occurred because there was a growing business in a new country, there were more opportunities for trade and everyone wanted to try their luck on the gold fields. I found the migrating story s from the Chinese to be more of an interesting theme. This is the same with the racial tension, the mass groups of Chinese were the main targets with the racism. Most migrants that came to Australia to grab a share of the gold rush, left behind family and home. In traditional Chinese culture this was particularly difficult for them to come from a parent s heavy focused family system, to an alien country to live. The Chinese people that came to Australia were typically men brining there family over with them to work for an income that would be big enough to support them. The wife however was left at home to forfill the role of looking after her in laws in this time. The family would have to work for them aswell, and send a percentage of there profit over. The Disocial Model Of Disability 1.1 Outline the history and development of the medical, social and psychosocial models of disability The medical model of disability With the Age of Enlightenment in the 18th century there came a more scientific understanding of the causes of disability and with it a sense of confidence in medical science s ability to cure, or rehabilitate disabled people. Some disabled people were deemed incurable and placed in long stay institutions and special schools. A notion of normality was based on assessments of disability against normality (what a person can t do, instead of what a person can do.) This does not take away the very necessary role of medical science in keeping many disabled people alive/reducing pain and discomfort. The medical model sees disabled people as the problem. They need to be adapted to fit into the world as it is. If this isn t possible, then they should have only their basic needs met. The emphasis is on dependence. The disability is focused on, rather than the needs of the person. The power to change disabled people appeared to lie with in the medical profession, with talk of cures, normalisation and science. Often, disabled people s lives are handed over to these professionals. Their decisions affect where disabled people go to school/what support they get/where they live/if they can work. Nonsurgical hair replacement first involves a custom made hair system being produced for you. This system is made of a a polymer and/or mesh base that is measured to fit your scalp perfectly. Polymer bases are more durable and less expensive, but mesh ones keep your scalp cooler, so this decision can be a tough one. Human hair is the most natural looking and feeling, but today s synthetic hair can also look and feel very natural when made well. Synthetic hair is more affordable than human hair. The hair is then attached to the base made for your scalp in a very natural pattern to mimic how your original hair looked, and the base can then be adhered to your scalp by you or a ... • 41. Swift s Proposal This essay starts by capturing the attention of the audience by surprises, that first shocks and then causes the readers to think critically about what he is really saying. Not only about his morals and values, but also about his motivations and policies explaining his proposal. Firstly, Swift persuades and informs the reader with his attempt to find out a fair cheap, and easy method for taking the starving children of Ireland and to make them sound and useful members of the commonwealth. Swift argues, by using economic reasoning as well as a self righteous moral stance to find a way to turn this problem into a solution. His proposal, in short, is to fatten up the undernourished children and feed them to Ireland s wealth. Children of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 43. Abolishment In Frankenstein Despite how extravagantly different the creation scene is in Shelley s novel compared to what is presented on screen, there is little to say on the subject. As already mentioned in the introduction, the tradition of exuberant, showy creation scenes didn t begin with the original textit{Frankenstein} (1931), but with the 1910 edition, where it lends half of its runtime to the conjuration of the monster. Each iteration of Frankenstein thereafter copies this extravagant method of portraying the creation scene, and as they do so, knowledge of Shelley s minimal description is lost. First, we must explore why her version of events isn t inclusive of the embellishment and indulgence on screen. In Shelley s text, the scene consists of a few ... Yet he acknowledges that this moment is not one to celebrate, and thus compensates for this using other methods, turning the showy scene from a contradiction to a juxtaposition that emphasises the monstrosity of not only the monster, but Victor s actions in creating it: First, the monster lunges from a great copper sarcophagus filled with water to make it a kind of womb. After he lands sprawling in the spill tank under it, Victor lifts him up, vainly tries to show him how to walk, then ties him standing to a set of chains. But when the struggling creature is struck by a falling piece of wood and shortly goes limp, Victor concludes that he himself has killed this luckless heir to massive birth defects. and that this evil must be destroyed...forever. footcite{James Heffernan, Looking at the Monster: Frankenstein and Film pp.143} This departure from the novel highlights Victor as a more paternal figure than the text implies, making a point of the undercurrent of dread the scene should evoke, yet contrivedly conveying Victor s repulsion at the creature in this scene, Victor is less repulsed by the creature, as Shelley s text strongly emphasises, but more toward his own actions. It is only when Victor wakes up to the sight of the lumbering creature in the next scene does he cry out No! . This decision creates a confusing tone where it could initially be misconstrued by the audience that Branagh s Victor is merely startled by the presence of a monster he had presumed dead, muddling up the message of Victor s regret and of the repercussions of rebirth that Shelley intends on ... • 47. Poverty In Guatemala Poverty in Guatemala Well over 50 percent of the population in Guatemala lives on incomes that are below the poverty line. (Orphan Outreach) This is a reality that I was able to experience on my mission trip to Guatemala. The issue of poverty was evident through the homes people lived in, the clothes they wore, and where they were attending school during the day. This is one of many problems that are faced in the country of Guatemala. When looking at the amount of poverty in Guatemala, it is important to consider the effects of poverty, its moral implications, the ways we can respond, and the benefits of helping. Sixty percent of the population in Guatemala is illiterate. This is largely due to the low quality of education. Only 40 percent of children find themselves able to finish schooling because their families are unable to afford it. (Mayan Families) Instead of going to school, these children can be found at home working and helping to earn a living for their family. It is not only the kids unable to go to school facing problems; those attending school are facing problems as well. The schools that these children are attending are not helping them very much because the teachers do not have access to the training and resources that they need. Many believe that they should be punished for this violation of secrecy. Yet, perhaps what they release could be saving the country and government. Secrets in government of war and finances can be detrimental to the health of the United States of America from the spread of conspiracy theories and due to the fact that the government, which should be protecting the people, is sneaking behind citizen s backs and making their own worldwide decisions. Corruption with government secrets is a main topic as to why whistleblowers are needed. There is a fine line between what the government needs to hold and what the government should share, but it is popularly believed that the government needs to release more so it can actually feel like the people get their own say.
