The Model Driven Development Paradigm
3. Model Driven Development Paradigm
In the last few years, the software development evolves in an important manner MDD is a group of
approaches, theories and methodological frameworks for industrialized software development.
The basic idea of this model is to transfer the development efforts from programming to the higher
level of abstraction, through use models such as primary artifacts and by transforming models into
source code or other artifacts .

Analysis and Design Phases Description
Software Engineering is the whole process of developing a software product from beginning to end
using an accepted methodology. One of the common and oldest methods is the Waterfall model which
sets a linear sequence of progression from Requirements gathering and analysis, design,
implementation, testing to maintenance (Philip L, Matthew, Nick, 2002).
Fig (1) the waterfall model of software development
The five common stages include
1. Analysis
At this stage the system requirements are collected and defined. Every existing systems can also be
evaluated and each inadequacy can be highlighted.
2. Design
A design specification is taken from requirements analysis, which plans are prepared related to
physical construction, hardware, operating systems, programming, communications and safety issues.
3. Build
Using the design specification, the system is developed and elements built. Additionally, the system
will also be tested and user training will happen.
4. Implement
The system is installed and implemented. That is, through any a gradual phased process or through a

How Are Hector And Achilles Alike
Achilles and Hector are similar in a few ways but are different in many more. Both men are renowned
warriors and some of the best fighters for their sides. And unfortunately, both men are fated to die.
Both men are human, although only barely in Achilles s case, who can only be wounded if hit in a
small spot on his heel. But despite these few similarities, Achilles and Hector are more different than
they are alike. Achilles let s himself be ruled by his emotions while Hector has a more steady and calm
temperament. Hector has a wife and a son and is capable of showing love towards others, Achilles on
the other hand only speaks to his mother when he needs something: revenge, or armor. One drastic
difference between the two men is an unfortunate character flaw that Achilles portrays constantly:
anger. In fact the first sentence of the Iliad clearly states that it is the story of Achilles s anger. Sing,
goddess, the anger of Peleus son Achilles and it s devastation. (I, 1 2) Throughout the story you
continuously see the products of his rage. He refuses to fight for Agamemnon because of the stealing
of Breisis, and instead invokes the power of Zeus so that the Greeks will lose against the Trojans until
his (Achilles s) honor has been restored. If perhaps he (Zeus) might be willing to help the Trojans, and
pin the Achaians against the ships and the water, dying, so that thus they may all have profit of their
own king, that Atreus son wide ruling Agamemnon may recognize

Japanese Weapons Research Paper
Japan: Under The Shoguns
Japanese swords were arguably the most innovative and technologically advanced swords of their
time. Blades were often forged with different profiles, different blade thicknesses, and varying
amounts of grind. The steel used is known as tamahagane or jewel steel . Tamahagane is produced
from iron sand, a source of iron ore.
The smelting process used is different from the modern process of making steel. A clay vessel about 1
m tall, 3.7 m long, and 1.2 m wide is constructed. This is known as a tatara. After the clay tub has set,
it is heated until dry. A charcoal fire is started. The fire will need to reach the correct temperature. At
this point you would add iron sand(satetsu). This will be layered in with more charcoal and more iron

Often ridden by higher ranked individuals in an army, horses were used by Samurai to break the
enemy line by charging at them and breaking apart their front line.
Samurai armour was a masterpiece of craftsmanship and a status symbol in Shogun Japan. These suits
were aesthetically designed to intimidate opponents and physically designed to protect against all
manner of attacks. Samurai armour crafting was a meticulous process, overseen by an armourer who
led a team of blacksmiths who worked with leather workers to create armour that would not only
protect its wearer, but incorporated elements of Japanese myths and folklore, and Samurai spirituality
Japanese armour is thought to have evolved from the armour used in ancient China and Korea. At this
time armour was primitive and was made of solid metals. It was around the 12th century when the
pinnacle of Japanese armour was reached. It was also the most iconic samurai armour. This armour
was called o yoroi. The six major components are the dō (chest armour), kabuto (helmet), menpo

Symptoms And Treatment Of Schizophrenia
The streets of many cities are homes for thousands of people with no homes, no money and seemingly
no lives. When seen talking to themselves or yelling at a wall, ordinary people cross the street or
simply look the other way. It never occurred to them that these crazies ate often very sick people with
the incurable disease schizophrenia. What they don t know also realize is that this disease could just as
likely be a friend, cousin, sister, or even them. Schizophrenia was first recognized by a Belgian,
Benoit A. Morel. He called it demence precoce and describes it as a condition in young people, similar
to the deterioration of the old, of arrested development. Morel noted the fact that it led to severe
emotional and intellectual deterioration (Collier s 389). Because of the age of occurrence, the name
was changed to precocious dementia, and changed again in 1911 to two Greek words: schizein(split)
and phren (mind) by Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler (Collier s 389). In 1896 and well into the 1900
s, psychologists predominantly believed in the theories of three men: German Dr. Emil Kraeplin, Dr.
Sigmund Freud of Austria, and U.S. Dr. John B. Watson (Long 49). Kraeplin systematically studied
the different conditions patients showed of the disease and classified them into four groups: paranoid,
hebephrenic, catatonic, and simple (Collier s 389). Freud brought about the theory that the illness
developed because of certain experiences in ones emotional life, particularly

Washington Square Quotes
Washington Square
In Putt s book Henry James: A Readers Guide, he speaks in a chapter about Washington Square.
Within this chapter he goes over the role that Catherine plays in the story. She ultimately chooses
spinsterhood, and not to defy her father, and to be the good daughter. The theme of avoidance o f
marriage, spinsterhood, is something that is focused on by James in much of his work (Putt 46). Putt
dwells on the fact that the father was a cruel man, and gives extraneously long quotes from James s
original text to make a small point. I think that this author would have been much more effective if he
would have narrowed down his thought in this chapter. Putt touches on a lot of things concerning
Washington Square, such as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Donald Hall s Afterword of Washington Square, he argues that in spite of the limited number of
characters and simplicity of plot, the novel still presents a complicated moral conflict. At the heart of
this conflict is Dr. Sloper, The moral force of this novel lies in the paradox of Dr. Sloper s wrong
rightness (224). This paradox, of course, assumes that Dr. Sloper is not only right about Morris
Townsend s intentions as primarily a fortune hunter who will bring unhappiness to Catherine, but also
that Dr. Sloper is wrong to deny his daughter an inheritance based on her intentions to marry Morris
Townsend. Assuming these two elements are present in the novel, the moral paradox indeed occurs
and Mr. Hall is correct in claiming that the book is not morally simple (224). However, Dr. Sloper
might not be completely right about Morris Townsend. And if he isn t right in assuming the worst for
Morris, then clearly Dr. Sloper is the one sided villain of the novel.
There is enough evidence in the text to assume that Morris Townsend has great interest in the fortune
of Catherine. He readily admits it. As Dr. Sloper inquires of Townsend s sister of the young man s
character, it seems that the marriage would be a mistake for Catherine. This issue is crucial to the
moral meaning of the book, for it makes us certain that Catherine s marriage to Morris

The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) currently uses a cogeneration facility that uses
methane gas to supply electricity and heat to the campus. Although the cogeneration facility saves
eight million dollars a year, the use of methane gas does not follow the goals of carbon neutrality
within the UC campuses ( Energy Management ). A non carbon producing, alternative source of
energy is needed to help reach this goal. By following the first solution from Bending the Curve, the
use of electric producing algae can replace the consumption of methane gas. Using electric producing
algae not only creates a carbon neutral way to produce energy, but it also removes carbon dioxide
from the atmosphere and purifies waste water (Gajda et al.). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Another problem that electric producing algae has is that it is still relatively expensive compared to
other sources of energy like solar. This process is currently using expensive catalyst like platinum, to
decrease price, a cheaper alternative is required (Lobato et al.). These three problems turn people away
from investing in electric producing algae because there are many alternatives that can have better
efficiency. However, with more efficient algae, it can provide more than just energy. Compare to other
sources of alternative energy, electric producing algae has the most benefits of them all. If UCSD is
completely dependent on electric producing algae, it would stop two million tons of carbon per year
per acre from polluting the atmosphere (Lane, Where are we with algae biofuel? ). Although other
sources of renewable energy would be able to do this, algae would be better in the long run. Through
photosynthesis, oxygen is created in exchange of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This will help
lower the overall concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere because algae can act as a sink for
carbon in the atmosphere. This process would result in a net negative production of carbon dioxide.
Not only algae can remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, it can also treat waste water. Algae
feeds off from the nutrient in the waste water and in exchange, human

A Contemporary Performance Issue
Commuting is a perfect example of a contemporary performance issue, traffic congestion can steal
valuable time from employees personal lives (Wells par. 1). The typical employee is concerned with
the time lost in commuting to work and not spent at home with their family. The family could be
spouse, children, pets, parents, siblings etc....If your everyday lifestyle started with the concern and
time wasted just for commuting to and from work, you already started the day with a strike against
you. In the past, this was not an issue with the employer. The employer was concerned with what they

forms of transportation, says Judy Schober, HR director. Another plus: It tips the scale in our favor

? At Kaiser Permanente, 50 percent of the company s 2,600 headquarters staff in Oakland, Calif., now

manager of resource conservation. We created a financial disincentive for parking and driving alone,
while creating a financial incentive for using transit and car pooling, says Gerwig. The company
achieved this by eliminating parking leases and reducing employee parking subsidies at one Kaiser
complex in the downtown Oakland area. At the same time, it encouraged transit use through employee
transit subsidies of $15 per month. The result: Transit ridership went up, 14 percent fewer employees
drove to work alone and the company estimates it saved $570,400 in parking benefits (Wells par. 4).

In particular, small changes in inputs can result in large changes in the value of a company, given the
need to project cash flow to infinity. James Montier argues that, while the algebra of DCF is simple,
neat and compelling, the implementation becomes a minefield of problems . He cites, in particular,
problems with estimating cash flows and estimating discount rates. Despite the issues, DCF analysis is
very widely used and is perhaps the primary valuation tool amongst the financial analyst community.
2.2. Terminal Value
Terminal Value, in simple term, is the value of a company with an infinite row of constant future cash
flows.
To arrive at a total company value, or enterprise value, we simply have to take the present value of the
cash flows and the Terminal value, divide them by the discount rate and, finally, add up the results. If
we are discounting free cash flow of the firm at the weighted average cost of capital, this would give
the value of the firm, so it would be necessary to deduct net debt in order to arrive at the equity value.
In this report, simply use FCF in the year of 2011 to compare the value of the firm to the stock price in
the year end of 2011.
2.3. Weighted Average Cost of Capital
The Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC) is the discount rate used in a Discounted Cash Flow
(DCF) analysis to present value projected free cash flows and terminal value.

Leonardo And Eyck Similarities
The Renaissance was from the late fourteenth century to the late sixteenth century. The word
Renaissance means rebirth in French. In this period of the arts, the paintings dramatically improved.
The individuals changed from flat two dimensional people to three dimensional, life like figures.
During the Renaissance, there were many artists including Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Jan
van Eyck.
Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian painter who lived from 1452 to 1519. Although generally known as a
painter, Leonardo was also a superb inventor. He designed a rectangular parachute, crafted a silver
lyre, and sketched rapid firing cannons. Surprisingly, he recorded over five thousand pages of notes
from many different topics including anatomy and flight. Because he took such a great interest in
learning and experiments, Leonardo did not complete many paintings. Sadly, he completed less than
twenty works. His most famous painting was the Mona Lisa. Toward the end of his life, Leonardo da
Vinci later traveled to converse with French King Francis I, and da Vinci died there at the age of sixty
seven.
Michelangelo also was an Italian artist. He lived from 1475 to 1564. Because he preferred to work
alone, Michelangelo refused to have apprentices. Although one of his most famous works is the
ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, he preferred to sculpt. At age 23, ... Show more content on

Use of Fantasy in Langston Hughes s On the Road Essay
Use of Fantasy in Langston Hughes s On the Road
Langston Hughes s short story On the Road begins and ends realistically enough: his protagonist,
Sargeant, enters a strange town one winter s night during the Depression and finds himself without
shelter, as many did during this era. Hughes gives Sargeant the additional burden of being an African
American in the white part of town; therefore, he faces the perfectly plausible obstacles of shelters that
drew the color line and racist police officers who beat and imprison him. But despite the realistic
beginning and ending of the story, Hughes places an elaborate fantasy segment involving Sargeant
talking to a stone Christ who has broken off the cross in the story s middle. ... Show more content on

In the fantasized conversation, Christ confirms for Sargeant that people like those in the town have
kept him nailed to a cross for nearly two thousand years, and that he is glad that Sargeant has finally
liberated him. Christ s meaning here is clear: that many Christians have reduced him to merely a
symbol of suffering rather than having allowed the spirit of what he taught to roam freely. While they
may claim to revere Christ s image on the stone crucifix, the townspeople have completely failed to
heed Christ s message of brotherhood and love, as proven by their reaction to Sargeant s attempt to
enter their church. The white townspeople have proven as cold and unresponsive as the snow which
blankets their town. The newly liberated stone Christ may not know where to go next, but I m leavin
here, he tells Sargeant. Christ feels that going anyplace else would be preferable

Qualities of an Effective Teacher
What it means to be an effective teacher
Introduction
An effective teacher is someone who increases the understanding of a pupil. Effective teaching is the
ability of providing instructions to students of varying abilities while incorporating instructional
objectives and assessing the effective education form of students. In the evaluation of performance,
efficiency on the lesson plan and technique of delivery forms form part of the criteria taken into
consideration. The teacher s practices that ensure the higher level of assessment and active
participation are most successful. This outdo all the factors, such as size of the class, socioeconomic
conditions and gender (Sullivan 2001). The most significant aspect that gears a student to perform
well is the teachers details of classroom practices as demonstrated in one of the video links Pre
primary: Science Mini Beasts . They must have sufficient familiarity with the techniques and methods
associated with their career and must certify that the pupil learning must develop over the course of
the year (Sullivan 2001). Majorly presumed methods of quantifying teacher effectiveness include
pupils work, teacher s assessments, and lesson plans. An effective teacher employs creativity in the
classroom. It is both necessary to the student and teacher. Creativity involves qualities like
imagination, originality, and self expression. The teacher should encourage the use of imagination as
implied in the video footage. Imagination

Women And Hysteria In Jane Eyre
The first manifestation that will be examined in this chapter is hysteria. While there existed different
forms of hysteria, this section of the chapter will focus on the aspect that it was considered a disease
that affected women more than men due to their weakness and susceptibility to emotions. Several
publications were written about women and hysteria, or they were written geared toward women about
dealing with hysteria. Women were viewed as unable to control their bodies, being described as the
feebler sex and meek. Inasmuch, when struck with a hysterical paroxysm a medical term for an attack
or episode they were rendered helpless. As stated by Robert Brudenell Carter, a nineteenth century
physician and ophthalmic surgeon, based on the research conducted during this time, it was decided
that there were satisfactory reason[s] for the greater proclivity of the female sex to hysteria, and also
for the absolute rarity of its occurrence in man. Furthermore, even though hysteria affected both males
and females, in the nineteenth century it was seen as an illness that was prone to the female sex. This
view flooded into society and thus created the many public debates on the discourse of the illness,
along with the literary responses such as Jane Eyre.
With hysteria being a manifestation of mental illness, it also experienced multiple terms and
definitions. Only a few of these terms and definitions will be examined in this section; however, they

Compare And Contrast The Massachusetts Bay Colonies And...
Making empires was not the primary goal of the English colonies. The true goal was to build unique
and successful colonies. Those that did were rewarded. Massachusetts Bay and Chesapeake colonies
were both similar and different. The first colony to have been founded in the Chesapeake area was
Virginia, the first three ships sent out were Discovery, Godspeed, and Susan Constant. The first
attempt never quite flourished as it would with John Rolfe. Disease from water contamination caused
most of the deaths. John Winthrop founded the Massachusetts Bay colony and did not exactly make

Both the original Puritans and Puritan Separatists escaped their home country for religious reasons.
The Puritans who came from Anglia, England to ultimately settle in Massachusetts Bay left because
they felt that the Church of England had not separated itself enough from its Catholic roots. One of the
Chesapeake colonies, ironically enough, was mainly founded on the religious persecution the people
of Massachusetts Bay had imposed upon them. Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams and
later became home to Anne Hutchinson, both showing motions of antinomianism. Maryland was
another colony in the Chesapeake region that was founded on religious purposes. The Quakers in
England were badly treated and often killed and martyred for their cause. Maryland became site of a

colonies were founded seemed to revolve around a common need for a better religious

James Langston Hughes Delusions Of Rivers

father James Hughes. Shortly following his birth, Hughes parents divorced which resulted in him
being raised mainly by his mother, his maternal grandmother and a childless couple named Reed. (
Langston Hughes ) Hughes moved frequently throughout his childhood, traveling to and living in
various states before graduating from high school in Cleveland Ohio. Shortly after graduating from
high school, Hughes took a trip to Mexico to see his father who moved there after he divorced his

And then I remembered that I had read about Abraham Lincoln going down the Mississippi as a young
man...He saw human beings bought and sold in the slave market there and he was so horrified by this
that he never forgot it ( Audio on The Negro Speaks of Rivers )
With this knowledge it is easy to see that the bosom [turning] all golden in the sunset symbolizes the
freeing of the slaves after the passing of Abe Lincoln s Emancipation Proclamation and the
metaphorical dawning of a new day that occurred thereafter for the negro people.
As one examines the symbolism of the rivers mentioned in the poem, it becomes easier to see
elements of Hughes style and his efforts to highlight the significance of the black soul . During the
Harlem Renaissance, a time of artistic revival in Harlem, black writers were faced with a dilemma.
Whites celebrated the supposedly primitive (that is, natural, basic, and uncivilized) qualities of black
culture because they were seen as rejuvenating a depleted, over civilized Western culture. (Hardy)
Consequently black writers during this time were faced with the choice of either adopting the
European forms of writing despite their limited access and experiential connection (Hardy) or be
labeled as primitive and simple. In The Negro Speaks of Rivers Hughes, in a way steals the thunder of
this simple stereotype. Through symbolism he shows the long lineage of the black race all the way
back to the Mesopotamian cultures and how it dwarfs any achievements of the United States one
hundred fifty year history.

Essay on Black Holes
Black Holes Every day we look out upon the night sky, wondering and dreaming of what lies beyond
our planet. The universe that we live in is so diverse and unique, and it interests us to learn about all
the variance that lies beyond our grasp. Within this marvel of wonders, our universe holds a mystery
that is very difficult to understand because of the complications that arise when trying to examine and
explore the principles of space. That mystery happens to be that of the ever elusive, black hole.
This essay will hopefully give you the knowledge and understanding of the concepts, properties, and
processes involved with the space phenomenon of the black hole. It will describe how a black hole is

What this means is that it is impossible to use the laws of physics to predict the structure of the region
after the Cauchy horizon. This breakdown of predictability has led physicists to hypothesize that a
singularity should form at the Cauchy horizon, forcing the evolution of the interior to stop at the
Cauchy horizon, rendering the idea of a region after it meaningless.
Recently this hypothesis was tested in a simple black hole model. A spherically symmetric black hole
with a point electric charge has the same essential features as a rotating black hole. It was shown in the
spherical model that the Cauchy horizon does develop a scalar curvature singularity. It was also found
that the mass of the black hole measured near the Cauchy horizon diverges exponentially as the
Cauchy horizon is approached. This led to this phenomena being dubbed mass inflation.
In order to understand what exactly a black hole is, we must first take a look at the basis for the cause
of a black hole. All black holes are formed from the gravitational collapse of a star, usually having a
great, massive, core. A star is created when huge, gigantic, gas clouds bind together due to attractive
forces and form a hot core, combined from all the energy of the two gas clouds. This energy produced
is so great when it first collides, that a nuclear reaction occurs and the gases within the star start to
burn continuously. The hydrogen gas is

The NBA Should Enforce a Hard Salary Cap
How many of you sports fans out there are sick of paying twenty five dollars for a lousy seat at an
NBA game? How many of you are sick of seeing the same teams in the finals every year? I m sure
there are thousands of you out there that feel this way, as do I. The way we can fix these problems is to
demand that the NBA enforce a hard salary cap. A hard salary cap would lower ticket prices, allow for
more teams to be more competitive and eliminate the possibility of any future lockouts. If the three
things listed above aren t met, it s hard to say if the NBA will survive at all. I want to see the NBA
survive, but not in the way things are being run now. A hard salary cap is the only way ... Show more

( 1 ) The players realize that they are eliminating their average fan and they don t care. We as fans
should not pay these outlandish ticket prices. A hard salary cap is the only thing that will lower
salaries and ticket prices. If ticket prices aren t lowered, I personally feel that the players can kiss their
pay checks goodbye. But what do other people think.
Some people believe that NBA arenas will fill up in spite of high ticket prices. Just last year Michael
Jordan made 33.14 million dollars while the whole Chicago Bulls salary cap was 26.9 million, and all
season long seats were filled. That means to some that no matter the amount, people will continue to
attend NBA games.
To the people that believe this, I must remind them of Major League Baseball and the situation that
they faced just a few years back. First, players salaries skyrocketed to obscene levels, alienating their
average fan. Next, the players couldn t decide how to divide up their millions. Finally, they quit
playing the game and their fans quit caring about Major League Baseball. Does any of this sound
familiar? This is exactly what s happening in the NBA right now. If it happened to the American
Pastime it can, and certainly will, happen to the NBA. Yet people, in spite of the lower ticket prices
provided by a hard salary cap, aren t convinced that a hard salary cap is a good idea. They feel that

Women s Liberation Movement Of The 1960s And 1970s
History 304 Casey Bryant Section 4 Module 11
The women s liberation movement (or feminism as it is now known) of the 1960s and 1970s touched
every home, business, and school (WA, 705). The movement even touched the sports and
entertainment industries, in fact, There are few areas of contemporary life untouched by feminism
(WA, 717). The word feminism in the early 1960 s wasn t often used and when it was it was used with
condescension or hatred. However, in the late sixties that changed thanks to a new group of women.
This new diverse group of women included the: young, old, heterosexual, lesbians, working class, and
even the privileged. This diverse group came together and collectively created the second wave of
feminism.
The current counterculture and social upheavals of the civil rights movement and the Vietnam war
caused this new feminism to emerge, signaling the beginning of a transforming era in women s history

Building a strong brand is vital for a firm to success. However, protecting the firm s brand is also
equally important. Without protection, firm s products and services could be imitated then sell from
competitors, leading confusion to customers and revenue lost. That is why it is essential for firms to
have their brand protected at early stage as that will secure their growing brand and protect them from
competition. Once firms establish trademark for their brand, they can fight infringement of their brand

What is Turnitin?
Turnitin is the software that AA Hamilton College uses to calculate the similarity of your assignment
to any other document submitted in the same system all over the world.
What happens when you submit an assignment on Turnitin?
You submit your assignment on Turnitin by submitting it on Livecampus on the assignment
submission link. Your assignment is then compared with all of the assignments for all the different
units submitted on Livecampus as well as assignments submitted by other students in other colleges
and books and documents all over the world. The report generated is not the final report. The final
report will only be generated after the final deadline which would mean that once the submission link
closes and once every student submitted assignments at AA Hamilton for the specific unit, only then
the final report will be generated. This means that if you have shared your assignment with anybody
and they have submitted part of it or the full assignment the initial report your friend got would ve
indicated the similarity, but your report would ve remained unchanged. This is because the report is
refreshed every time that you upload your assignment and then finally after the deadline. After the
deadline their plagiarism will be high as well as your own.

Emerging Therapies For Sickle Cell Anemia
Emerging therapies for sickle cell anemia
Cesi Salmeron
Suny Rockland Community College
Abstract
Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is an inherited disorder that produces sickle or crescent shape red blood
cells. Thus, the mutated erythrocytes result in an inadequate supply of oxygen being transported
throughout the body. Research shows that among those affected the most with the sickle cell gene are
African Americans. In recent years, we have seen a decrease in mortality and morbidity rates as a
result of new approaches to treating the disease. The more we understand the pathophysiology of
sickle cell anemia, the more we learn about developing therapies for genetic disorders such as SCA. In
this paper, we will briefly discuss what sickle cell anemia is and possible treatments for people with
sickle cell anemia such as gene therapy and new drugs.
What is sickle cell anemia?
Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder. This missense mutation is
characterized by mutant beta globin subunits that tend to stick together (Cummings, 2014). As a result,
abnormally shaped red blood cells are produced by this disorder. The erythrocytes are sickle or
crescent shaped. Sickling occurs under hypoxic conditions, in which there is insufficient supply of
oxygen delivered throughout the body (Sun Xia, 2013). In order to inherit this monogenic disease, one
copy of the sickle globin gene from each parent must be passed on to the offspring (Ashley Koch,

Madonna Of The Goldfinch Essay
1. Composition is the organization, or arrangement, of forms in a work of art. When art historians
analyze composition, they focus on the overall arrangement and organizing design or structure of a
work of art. Madonna of the Goldfinch is a painting by Raphael. The three figures, the Madonna and
her two boys, are arranged in a triangular shape at the center of the painting. The artist emphasized
this by opening the clouds to show a patch of blue in the middle of the sky, and by situating delicate
trees around the figural group. This is a bilaterally symmetrical composition, because the Madonna is
at the center of the painting while the two boys are divided between the two sides of the triangular
shape approximately equidistant from the painting s center. On either side of an implied vertical line at
the center of the painting, known as an axis, there are equivalent forms on the left and right which are

The aspect of the case study of Rogier van der Weyden s Philadelphia Crucifixion that was especially
interesting to me was the cultural context. I found this to be the most interesting because, to me, the
cultural context is what gives immense meaning to a work of art. By knowing an artist s intended
audience, an artist s goals, the context of the time and place a work was created, and the background
and experiences of the artist, works of art are given much deeper meaning. This painting is not simply
a painting depicting the pain those closest to Jesus suffered as a result of his crucifixion; rather, this
painting is associated with extremely important moments in the life of the artist, such as his religious
pilgrimage to Rome in 1450 and the initiation of his eldest son as a Carthusian monk at around the
same time. The artist, whether this panel painting had been created as a donation to the chapel of St.
Catherine at Herrines or not, shows how the artist truly embraced his personal experiences and used
art to express his

Cyberpunk and Science Fiction Essay
Cyberpunk and Science Fiction Science fiction can be defined as a method of story telling that steps
outside of the box of life as we know it and into the realm of the impossible. Science fiction works are
often designed to be only truthful in the eyes of the author and the reader. However, there are times
when either a science fiction work parallels closely to the future of our world and therefore becomes a
possibility or life pursues a science fiction like ideal making the quest heroic in itself. The latter of the
two can describe the viewpoint of our growing cyberpunk culture and its belief that technology is the
end no matter what means be. The stories in the book Cyberpunk seems to focus on the life of a
hacker. The book ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Punks visualize new applications for our latest technology, no matter what the judgment may be
for that application (good vs. evil). These envisioned plans are realized in Cyberpunk. Each story
starts out with a young person who holds a vision. In each case, the Punk has a desire to find an
advantage gained by exploiting the technology. Aspirations were all fulfilled, from cheating telephone
companies to hacking into corporate offices and generally wreaking havoc on the cyberworld. To deal
with these villains, our government attempts to prevent any misuse of technology through the
enactment of laws prohibiting illegal actions. In addition, manufacturers and visionaries continuously
develop new products and technologies designed to prevent the hackers from getting the upper hand.
Despite these efforts however, as is the case in many science fiction works, it is the villains who set
the standard and the establishment fighting these villains is forced to follow. Science fiction villains
and hackers alike, seem to always be one step ahead of the law (see the latest and greatest computer
virus for a perfect example). Some science fiction novels are written with our world portrayed as a
technological graveyard in the not too distant future. However, it seems that we are accelerating our
rate of advancement by mimicking the events of these science

Sustainable Development, International Law, and Trade
Sustainable Development, International Law and the Impact of Trade
At a time when trade continues to expand into the global economy, issues such as climate change,
environmental protection and sustainable development are becoming increasingly important
considerations in the process. However, the question is whether these issues are being adequately
addressed by current International trade regulations, trade agreements and International law.
According to the Australia Government, sustainable development represents one of the greatest
challenges facing Australia s governments, industry, business and community in the coming years .1
What is Sustainable Development?
The most widely accepted definition of sustainable development is from the Brundtland report,
namely, Sustainable Development is development that meets the needs of the present, without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. 2 This statement contains two
main aspects, first that the present generation s needs are met (intra generational equity) but more
importantly, that it is not made more difficult for future generation to meet their needs (inter
generational equity). Since the report was published, sustainable development has become an integral
part of environmental policy and has been the subject of numerous conferences and summits including
and the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in 1992,3 the World
Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD,

The Term Illness By Elizabeth Gaskell
The term illness draws up several definitions in the Oxford English Dictionary. The meaning most
immediate to our present understanding would be a bad/unhealthy condition of the body and mind .
Another among the others now obsolete presents it as a bad moral quality, condition, or character.
Illness was often used as a measure of morality, with the perception that bad morals predisposed to
illness and could be contagious like a disease. Elizabeth Gaskell explored these issues of morality the
loss and redemption of in her English social novel, Ruth. Challenging the typical fallen woman
narrative, her sympathetic portrayal of the eponymous heroine caused a huge divide in opinion,
disrupting and questioning the traditional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The typical fallen woman narrative was weighed down by suffering, warranted as an inevitable
consequence of tainting of moral character. Dismissed as outcasts, a downward spiral would ensue
ultimately to suicide. Reform was available via female penitentiaries, quarantined as if contagious in
institutions away from society. Throughout Ruth, Gaskell suggests that more benefit would be derived
from rehabilitation within the community itself.
Since Victorian society operated under strict religious principles, causes of disease were often given
metaphysical explanations linked to immorality. The emergence of anti contagionist theory occurred
during the British cholera epidemic of 1831 to 1832. With this, Swenson claims a direct causal link
was affirmed: the filth of immorality not only generated fever, but immoral persons were predisposed
to it. Gaskell appears to conform to this convention; fever is a recurring theme to which characters are
subjected whenever moral ills are committed. However, beneath the surface, she also pushes against
this idea. The first question she confronts the reader with is whether the heroine is a truly immoral
figure. In contextualising Ruth fallen woman narrative, Gaskell explores Ruth s background for the
reader to gain a greater understanding of how she came to be seduced. Ruth is presented as innocent
and snow pure , childish and awkward . Orphaned at fifteen, she began an apprenticeship as a
seamstress under

wilderness area that is part of Pisgah National Forest. This unique slice of southern Appalachia is

The fire began as the result of an out of control campfire, and because of high wind and drought
conditions which resulted in low fuel moisture spread relatively quickly for an upland fire in the

Linville Gorge fire was mainly a surface fire, the fire burned 4,000 hectares of wilderness area, and
forced local management agencies to start paying more attention to upland ecosystems that were not
previously thought to be fire dependent. Considering the magnitude of the fire, it was fortunate that no
human lives or homes were lost in the inferno. Vegetative studies show that Mountain Laurel (Kalmia

Taxi Driver (1976) follows Travis Bickle s life in New York after being honorably discharged. The
film is a psychological thriller that deals with Travis Bickle s mental instability and desire to do
something meaningful with his life. The narrative centers around Travis loneliness and disconnect
from society. The inciting incident occurs when Travis notices Betsy for the first time. Travis becomes
obsessed with Betsy, who works in a presidential campaign office for Charles Palantine. His pursuit
for Betsy comes to a halt when he takes her out to a pornographic film, and Betsy understandably feels
very uncomfortable. Betsy starts to ignore Travis calls after this mishap, leading him to march into the
campaign office and have a public falling out with her. The falling out finishes off act one and spirals
Travis into planning an assassination on Palantine. Before Travis attempts the assassination, he meets
and underage prostitute, Iris, who is the twist/midpoint. Travis sees innocence in Iris, and tries to lead
her away from her pimp, Sport. Travis assassination attempt on Palantine is foiled when he is caught
reaching for his firearm. This act two crisis pushes him in a new direction, to go after Sport instead.
Travis shout out at Sport s brothel is the climax of the film. The dénouement follows, with Travis
being heralded as a hero in newspapers and Iris parents thanking Travis for saving Iris. Later, Betsy

Increase in current liabilities Substantial increase in current liabilities weakened the company s
liquidity position. Its current liabilities were US$2,063.94 million at the end of FY2010, a 48.09%

25.07% from US$1,770.02 million at the end of FY2009 to US$2,213.72 million at the end of
FY2010. Following this, the company s current ratio declined from 1.27 at the end of the FY2009 to

position, and it may find it difficult to meet its day to day obligations.

Machiavelli s ideal virtuous leader must have the ability to avoid fortune, ability to use one s own

Machiavelli s example of Hannibal in The Prince teaches us that having virtue or being virtuous is to

maintains his army unified to gain and remain in power. Machiavelli also rates Hannibal highly on the

Information Technology Systems, Their Performance And Risk...
According to Richard Brisebois, Greg Boyd, and Ziad Shadid, IT Governance focuses specifically on
information technology systems, their performance and risk management. The primary goals of IT
Governance are to assure that the investments in IT generate business value, and to mitigate the risks
that are associated with IT. This can be done by implementing an organizational structure with well
defined roles for the responsibility of information, business processes, applications, and infrastructure.
(Brisebois, Boyd, and Shadid, n.d.). IM/IT priorities recently changed to concentrate on the integration
of systems across several facilities, computerization of patient records and improve decision support
for clinicians and managers. The IT Governance Institute business models developed an in depth value

Lymphangiomas Recently physicians at Lucile Packard Children s Hospital at Stanford found a
potential treatment to Lymphangiomas. Lymphangiomas is the overgrowth of the lymph channels,
which can cause airway constriction, and other aspects to the heart and lung function. The lymphatic
systems function is to filter out pathogens in the blood. Vessels of the lymphatics are a one way
system allowing fluids to come in but not to flow out. The issue lies in when these lymph vessels
swell or begin to back up. In the case of lymphangiomas, these channels swell and get abnormally
large. At Stanford, a common drug used for erectile dysfunction called sildenafil has been found to
treat symptoms of lymphangiomas. The topic that is now up for debate is that if the use of sildenafil or
commonly known Viagra should be used as a treatment for lymphangiomas in children and infants.
The aftermath of using sildenafil has many effects that can be consider positive. Sildenafil has and is
being used to treat erectile dysfunction, which is due to not enough blood, pumped to the penis or
there being a blockage in blood being pumped to the penis. Sildenafil is also being used to treat high
blood pressure in the lung. By looking at this information, individuals can see that sildenafil has the ...

Due to such low numbers of people who has used this drug as treatment, the medical field cannot
agree yet that this is truly effective treatment. When comes to use of Sildenafil physicians has found
that it comes with a few side effects. Nausea, Headaches, Runny nose, and Fever are all side effects of
this drug. Even though Sildenafil could be treatment lymphangiomas, physicians need to look at the
long term of effect of using this drug. In treating one problem have we created other problem(s). Is
this really the best choice or should we search for a different

Oppression In Lee Strobel s The Case For Faith
The Case for Faith, was written by Lee Strobel who at the time was an outspoken atheist. Strobel set
out on a mission to disprove the Christian faith. Along the way, as he gathered information he was
slowly convinced that there was truth to the religion. In result of his findings Strobel published three
books to help explain his findings. In this book he discusses objections that arise in the minds of
believers. Strobel discusses eight different objection, thoroughly explains them, and provides deep
information to help resolve these objections. Some of the issues that he touched on are tilled; Since
Evil and Suffering Exist, A Loving God Cannot, A Loving God Would Never Torture People in Hell,
and I Still Have Doubts, So I Can t Be a Christian. Within each obligation Strobel includes Bible
verses and professional explanations on objection at hand. The most beneficial sections are those
where he gives simple analogies that can benefit anybody no matter where one is in the faith journey.
The three parts that benefited me the most are; Since Miracles Contradict Science, They Cannot be
True, It s Offensive to Claim Jesus is the Only Way to God, and Church History is Littered with
Oppression and Violence. While there is so much information in each ... Show more content on

Most notable, Objection number eight is far shorter than most other sections. I feel more detail about
the types of doubt one might experience would add great value to section. Many people lack
confidence when it come to expressing their faith, and this would have been a perfect section to
discuss this. The second problem is in the way that the book is organized. It is written and organised
like a textbook and I found it hard to focus and read at times. I do not know how the book could be
organized differently and not take away from the information that is given throughout the

Exploring the Schema Theory of Learning Essay
Theories of Learning
Schema Theory
Overview: Schema Theory is part of the cognitive theories of learning module and deals with how the
brain processes new knowledge (Chalmers, 2003). Schemata are packets of prior knowledge that have
been stored in a learner s memory. Each learner has developed schemata that are based on prior
experience and knowledge. Learners seek to connect new information with prior knowledge and use
generalizations to assist in organization of information. Schema Theory is focused on conceptual
learning and states that knowledge seeks organization in order to develop meaning (Anderson, 1984).
Contributors: Major contributors to Schema Theory include Frederic Bartlett, Jean Piaget, Richard C.
Anderson, Marvin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This meaning is interrelated to prior knowledge and/or experience. Without a schema to which an
event can be assimilated, learning is slow and uncertain (Anderson, 1984, pg. 5). Knowledge that does
is not easily connected with previous schemata may undergo a form of schema evolution or be
discarded (Rumelhart Norman, 1980). Thus, development of new schemata or expanding of existing
schemata relies heavily on a learner s prior knowledge.
Application: Schema Theory s application in the learning environment can be seen in a variety of
ways in the learning environment. Schema Theory relies heavily on building connections to prior
learning. Therefore, it is crucial to employ teaching to expand learner s general knowledge and
concepts in order to provide a base for schematic connections. Teachers can be seen reminding
students of what they already know in order to build on previous knowledge and help make
connections to new ideas. However, teachers must understand that not all learner s schemata are the
same. A method of instruction that has its roots in Schema Theory and is often used in learning
environments is concept mapping. Concept mapping allows students to build on their previous
knowledge by connecting a cluster of concepts to a memory that is already encoded. Another way
teachers often tap into schemata theory is by focusing on skill based learning rather than rote
memorization. By

Essay on Importance of Nothing in Shakespeare s King Lear
Importance of Nothing in William Shakespeare s King Lear
The Tragedy of King Lear has many important themes. One major theme concerns nothing. The main
focus around the discussion of nothing is that nothing is a many things. Nothing is what binds
everything.
The first mention of nothing is when King Lear asks his daughters to profess how much they love him.
The eldest daughters shower compliments upon him tickling his ears. Yet the Lear s favorite daughter
Cordelia will only speak the truth. When asked what she can say to gain her a portion of land better
than her sisters, she replies, Nothing, my Lord (1.1. ) He exclaims, Nothing! (1.1. ) and she responds,
Nothing (1.1. ). Lear s answers, Nothing will come of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then he asks Lear, Can you make no use of nothing, nuncle (1.4. )? This question should prod Lear to
think of his earlier mistake of making a big ordeal out of Cordelia s nothing. Ironically he responds,
nothing can be made out of nothing (1.4. ), echoing what he said to Cordelia in 1.1. The Fool then tells
Kent to tell him so much the rent of his land comes to (1.4. ). The answer to this, of course, would be
nothing. The King has given all his land to Goneril and Regan.
After Goneril walks into the room, he tells Lear thou art an O without a figure (1.4. ). An O without a
figure would be a zero. Thus the Fool tells Lear that he is nothing. He continues by saying
straightforwardly, I am a Fool, thou art nothing
(1.4. ). Remarks like this provide ample opportunity for Goneril to rebuke Lear for having an all licens
d Fool (1.4. ). In addition, the Fool calls Lear a sheal d peascod (1.4. ). This is another way of saying
he is empty. He is nothing.
These remarks provide a theme continuing throughout the story. The main theme is that nothing is
what binds everything together. If Cordelia had not responded nothing then the King would be happy.
He would have moved in with Cordelia and she would have supported him. Moreover, Cordelia would
have kept her portion and would have married the Duke Burgundy. Thus, her nothing changed
everything.
In addition, this nothing gives the play comic relief. The Fool

Financial Statements And The Financial Position Of A Firm...
Introduction
The overall purpose of financial statements is the provision of relevant and concise information about
the financial position of a firm or other business enterprise. Financial statements allow a manager or
analyst to make informed judgments regarding the proven and likely future performance of a firm
prior to the making of important investment decisions (Bernstein and Wild, 2000).
Purpose of the Income Statement
According to Melicher and Norton (2014), the primary purpose of the income statement is to provide a
concise report of the revenues generated and expenses incurred by a business entity over a defined
time period typically a quarter or a year. Importantly, the revenues and expenses referred to in the
income ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This will often include advertising costs, the salaries and commissions earned by the sales force, and
general accounting costs such as for the preparation of financial records and statements (Melicher and
Norton, 2014).
The final type of expenses listed on a typical income statement is depreciation. This refers to the
estimates made on the reduction in value of key production and other assets over the period covered
by the income statement. This is regarded as a non cash expense and is often applied to items such as
plant and equipment, vehicle or aircraft fleets, and some types of real property (Melicher and Norton,
2014).
Purpose of the Balance Sheet
According to Melicher and Norton (2014), the primary purpose of the balance sheet is to summarize a
company s overall financial position at a fixed point in time typically the conclusion of a quarter or
year. A balance sheet is differentiated from an income statement in that the former is, effectively, a
snapshot of a business s financial position while an income statement provides a reflection of financial
performance over time. At its most basic, the balance sheet provides details on the firm s assets,
liabilities, and its shareholders equity as at a specific date.
Major Types of Assets
There are two major categories of assets listed on a typical balance sheet current assets, and property
and equipment (sometimes referred to as fixed assets).

The Article Subjective Social Status And Positive...
The article Subjective Social Status and Positive indicators of Well Being Among Emerging Adult
College Students by, Dr. Zorotovich, Dr. Johnson, and R. Linn state that social status can affect life
satisfaction and overall well being in college students. Although students from wealthier families
perceived themselves and their families as higher than some in social class, the students from
wealthier families might also view themselves as privileged in comparison to students from families
with less wealth. These students may feel more successful and may feel more capable of achieving
their goals. Furthermore, subjective social status and objective social status might both play an equal
role in well being, opposed to only subjective social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, life satisfaction has a positive effect on social skills and self esteem. Alternatively, life
satisfaction can negatively lead to substance abuse, drinking and driving, and possible mental health
issues such as anxiety and depression. From this study, the results show s us that the higher level of
education of the parents the higher perceived social status.
However, the study showed that parental education had no effect on the student s life satisfaction, but
it did show that perceived family and personal social status did have a positive effect. Furthermore,
individual subjective happiness is not affected by the parental education levels, but once again
perceived family status did. Previous research has consistently linked economic resources and human
capital to positive and negative health outcomes across their life span (Zorotovich 630). Dr.
Zorotovich et al look at more factors than just that of income level, and how these factors could
maximize well being, and takes into account how social status of a person and their family members
can also affect well being. They found that people and their families perceived social status had a large
impact on the individual s life satisfaction and happiness, but people with a greater perceived social
status of themselves and their families had reported greater levels of happiness and life satisfaction.

Peyton Approved Summary
Recently an operating budget was created for Peyton Approved, a pet supplies manufacturer. The
company s operating budget is a projected forecast for the quarter July through September 2015. The
budget includes specific calculations of the sales, production, manufacturing (raw materials, direct
labor, and factory overhead), selling, and general and administrative operations. After actual activity
was recorded and compared to the operating budget for Peyton Approved, variances were found that
caused unfavorable results in the company s total direct labor and total direct materials accounts.
These variances need to be analyzed and investigated so corrective actions can be taken.
A thorough review of the budget variance report indicates a few ... Show more content on

This occurrence could have been caused by the company hiring workers with less skill resulting in a
decrease in total wages paid out. This is also a controllable variance (Accounting Tools, n.d.) so
managers will have the opportunity to adjust the cost of labor as they see fit. Also, the budgeted cost
of labor may have been set too high in the first place causing the total cost to be overstated
(Accounting Simplified, n.d.). It s also important to look into whether or not actual figures are being
reported as oppose to purposely recording favorable values (Nobles, Mattison, Matsumura, Horngren,
2014). The variance in the labor efficiency may be a direct reflection of the use of less skilled workers.
The employees used more time (hours) than expected and the result yielded an unfavorable outcome.
If the workers are not experienced enough to complete a task efficiently more hours will be used to
compensate production demands. Other causes could be attributed to the condition of the equipment
and/or poor supervision (Accounting for Management, n.d.). Faulty equipment could play a role in
slowing down production and supervisors must step in immediately to remedy any issues that may
cause a noticeable change in budgeted expectations. In the future, Peyton Approved should consider
hiring employees that match the skill level required to perform as expected. They should also do an
evaluation to determine the conditions of their equipment (Garcia, n.d.) and advise production
managers on the proper procedures to motivate their workers to achieve company goals. Upon
examination of the material variance, it s noted that there were no direct material cost variances. The
explanation is simple; Peyton Approved was spot on when they priced their parts. There was no gain
nor loss connected to direct materials. Unfortunately, the materials were not used efficiently so the

  • 3. How Are Hector And Achilles Alike Achilles and Hector are similar in a few ways but are different in many more. Both men are renowned warriors and some of the best fighters for their sides. And unfortunately, both men are fated to die. Both men are human, although only barely in Achilles s case, who can only be wounded if hit in a small spot on his heel. But despite these few similarities, Achilles and Hector are more different than they are alike. Achilles let s himself be ruled by his emotions while Hector has a more steady and calm temperament. Hector has a wife and a son and is capable of showing love towards others, Achilles on the other hand only speaks to his mother when he needs something: revenge, or armor. One drastic difference between the two men is an unfortunate character flaw that Achilles portrays constantly: anger. In fact the first sentence of the Iliad clearly states that it is the story of Achilles s anger. Sing, goddess, the anger of Peleus son Achilles and it s devastation. (I, 1 2) Throughout the story you continuously see the products of his rage. He refuses to fight for Agamemnon because of the stealing of Breisis, and instead invokes the power of Zeus so that the Greeks will lose against the Trojans until his (Achilles s) honor has been restored. • 6. Symptoms And Treatment Of Schizophrenia The streets of many cities are homes for thousands of people with no homes, no money and seemingly no lives. When seen talking to themselves or yelling at a wall, ordinary people cross the street or simply look the other way. It never occurred to them that these crazies ate often very sick people with the incurable disease schizophrenia. What they don t know also realize is that this disease could just as likely be a friend, cousin, sister, or even them. Schizophrenia was first recognized by a Belgian, Benoit A. Morel. He called it demence precoce and describes it as a condition in young people, similar to the deterioration of the old, of arrested development. Morel noted the fact that it led to severe emotional and intellectual deterioration (Collier s 389). Because of the age of occurrence, the name was changed to precocious dementia, and changed again in 1911 to two Greek words: schizein(split) and phren (mind) by Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler (Collier s 389). In 1896 and well into the 1900 s, psychologists predominantly believed in the theories of three men: German Dr. Emil Kraeplin, Dr. Sigmund Freud of Austria, and U.S. Dr. John B. Watson (Long 49). Kraeplin systematically studied the different conditions patients showed of the disease and classified them into four groups: paranoid, hebephrenic, catatonic, and simple (Collier s 389). Within this chapter he goes over the role that Catherine plays in the story. She ultimately chooses spinsterhood, and not to defy her father, and to be the good daughter. The theme of avoidance o f marriage, spinsterhood, is something that is focused on by James in much of his work (Putt 46). Putt dwells on the fact that the father was a cruel man, and gives extraneously long quotes from James s original text to make a small point. I think that this author would have been much more effective if he would have narrowed down his thought in this chapter. Putt touches on a lot of things concerning Washington Square, such as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Donald Hall s Afterword of Washington Square, he argues that in spite of the limited number of characters and simplicity of plot, the novel still presents a complicated moral conflict. At the heart of this conflict is Dr. Sloper, The moral force of this novel lies in the paradox of Dr. Sloper s wrong rightness (224). This paradox, of course, assumes that Dr. Sloper is not only right about Morris Townsend s intentions as primarily a fortune hunter who will bring unhappiness to Catherine, but also that Dr. Sloper is wrong to deny his daughter an inheritance based on her intentions to marry Morris Townsend. Assuming these two elements are present in the novel, the moral paradox indeed occurs and Mr. Hall is correct in claiming that the book is not morally simple (224). However, Dr. Sloper might not be completely right about Morris Townsend. And if he isn t right in assuming the worst for Morris, then clearly Dr. Sloper is the one sided villain of the novel. There is enough evidence in the text to assume that Morris Townsend has great interest in the fortune of Catherine. He readily admits it. As Dr. Sloper inquires of Townsend s sister of the young man s character, it seems that the marriage would be a mistake for Catherine. This issue is crucial to the moral meaning of the book, for it makes us certain that Catherine s marriage to Morris ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although the cogeneration facility saves eight million dollars a year, the use of methane gas does not follow the goals of carbon neutrality within the UC campuses ( Energy Management ). A non carbon producing, alternative source of energy is needed to help reach this goal. By following the first solution from Bending the Curve, the use of electric producing algae can replace the consumption of methane gas. Using electric producing algae not only creates a carbon neutral way to produce energy, but it also removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and purifies waste water (Gajda et al.). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another problem that electric producing algae has is that it is still relatively expensive compared to other sources of energy like solar. This process is currently using expensive catalyst like platinum, to decrease price, a cheaper alternative is required (Lobato et al.). These three problems turn people away from investing in electric producing algae because there are many alternatives that can have better efficiency. However, with more efficient algae, it can provide more than just energy. Compare to other sources of alternative energy, electric producing algae has the most benefits of them all. If UCSD is completely dependent on electric producing algae, it would stop two million tons of carbon per year per acre from polluting the atmosphere (Lane, Where are we with algae biofuel? ). Although other sources of renewable energy would be able to do this, algae would be better in the long run. Through photosynthesis, oxygen is created in exchange of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This will help lower the overall concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere because algae can act as a sink for carbon in the atmosphere. This process would result in a net negative production of carbon dioxide. Not only algae can remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, it can also treat waste water. In particular, small changes in inputs can result in large changes in the value of a company, given the need to project cash flow to infinity. James Montier argues that, while the algebra of DCF is simple, neat and compelling, the implementation becomes a minefield of problems . He cites, in particular, problems with estimating cash flows and estimating discount rates. Despite the issues, DCF analysis is very widely used and is perhaps the primary valuation tool amongst the financial analyst community. 2.2. Terminal Value Terminal Value, in simple term, is the value of a company with an infinite row of constant future cash flows. To arrive at a total company value, or enterprise value, we simply have to take the present value of the cash flows and the Terminal value, divide them by the discount rate and, finally, add up the results. If we are discounting free cash flow of the firm at the weighted average cost of capital, this would give the value of the firm, so it would be necessary to deduct net debt in order to arrive at the equity value. In this report, simply use FCF in the year of 2011 to compare the value of the firm to the stock price in the year end of 2011. 2.3. Weighted Average Cost of Capital The Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC) is the discount rate used in a Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis to present value projected free cash flows and terminal value.

As one examines the symbolism of the rivers mentioned in the poem, it becomes easier to see elements of Hughes style and his efforts to highlight the significance of the black soul . During the Harlem Renaissance, a time of artistic revival in Harlem, black writers were faced with a dilemma. Whites celebrated the supposedly primitive (that is, natural, basic, and uncivilized) qualities of black culture because they were seen as rejuvenating a depleted, over civilized Western culture. What this means is that it is impossible to use the laws of physics to predict the structure of the region after the Cauchy horizon. This breakdown of predictability has led physicists to hypothesize that a singularity should form at the Cauchy horizon, forcing the evolution of the interior to stop at the Cauchy horizon, rendering the idea of a region after it meaningless. Recently this hypothesis was tested in a simple black hole model. A spherically symmetric black hole with a point electric charge has the same essential features as a rotating black hole. It was shown in the spherical model that the Cauchy horizon does develop a scalar curvature singularity. It was also found that the mass of the black hole measured near the Cauchy horizon diverges exponentially as the Cauchy horizon is approached. This led to this phenomena being dubbed mass inflation. In order to understand what exactly a black hole is, we must first take a look at the basis for the cause of a black hole. All black holes are formed from the gravitational collapse of a star, usually having a great, massive, core. A star is created when huge, gigantic, gas clouds bind together due to attractive forces and form a hot core, combined from all the energy of the two gas clouds. This energy produced is so great when it first collides, that a nuclear reaction occurs and the gases within the star start to burn continuously. The hydrogen gas is ... Without protection, firm s products and services could be imitated then sell from competitors, leading confusion to customers and revenue lost. That is why it is essential for firms to have their brand protected at early stage as that will secure their growing brand and protect them from competition. Once firms establish trademark for their brand, they can fight infringement of their brand through the court system like the case of Pepperidge Farm vs. Trader Joe s for the Milano cookie imitation. • 27. Emerging Therapies For Sickle Cell Anemia Emerging therapies for sickle cell anemia Cesi Salmeron Suny Rockland Community College Abstract Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is an inherited disorder that produces sickle or crescent shape red blood cells. Thus, the mutated erythrocytes result in an inadequate supply of oxygen being transported throughout the body. Research shows that among those affected the most with the sickle cell gene are African Americans. In recent years, we have seen a decrease in mortality and morbidity rates as a result of new approaches to treating the disease. The more we understand the pathophysiology of sickle cell anemia, the more we learn about developing therapies for genetic disorders such as SCA. In this paper, we will briefly discuss what sickle cell anemia is and possible treatments for people with sickle cell anemia such as gene therapy and new drugs. What is sickle cell anemia? Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder. This missense mutation is characterized by mutant beta globin subunits that tend to stick together (Cummings, 2014). As a result, abnormally shaped red blood cells are produced by this disorder. The erythrocytes are sickle or crescent shaped. Sickling occurs under hypoxic conditions, in which there is insufficient supply of oxygen delivered throughout the body (Sun Xia, 2013). In order to inherit this monogenic disease, one copy of the sickle globin gene from each parent must be passed on to the offspring (Ashley Koch, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Madonna Of The Goldfinch Essay 1. Composition is the organization, or arrangement, of forms in a work of art. When art historians analyze composition, they focus on the overall arrangement and organizing design or structure of a work of art. Madonna of the Goldfinch is a painting by Raphael. The three figures, the Madonna and her two boys, are arranged in a triangular shape at the center of the painting. The artist emphasized this by opening the clouds to show a patch of blue in the middle of the sky, and by situating delicate trees around the figural group. This is a bilaterally symmetrical composition, because the Madonna is at the center of the painting while the two boys are divided between the two sides of the triangular shape approximately equidistant from the painting s center. On either side of an implied vertical line at the center of the painting, known as an axis, there are equivalent forms on the left and right which are balanced and complimented in a ... By knowing an artist s intended audience, an artist s goals, the context of the time and place a work was created, and the background and experiences of the artist, works of art are given much deeper meaning. This painting is not simply a painting depicting the pain those closest to Jesus suffered as a result of his crucifixion; rather, this painting is associated with extremely important moments in the life of the artist, such as his religious pilgrimage to Rome in 1450 and the initiation of his eldest son as a Carthusian monk at around the same time. The artist, whether this panel painting had been created as a donation to the chapel of St. Catherine at Herrines or not, shows how the artist truly embraced his personal experiences and used art to express his ... Science fiction works are often designed to be only truthful in the eyes of the author and the reader. However, there are times when either a science fiction work parallels closely to the future of our world and therefore becomes a possibility or life pursues a science fiction like ideal making the quest heroic in itself. Aspirations were all fulfilled, from cheating telephone companies to hacking into corporate offices and generally wreaking havoc on the cyberworld. To deal with these villains, our government attempts to prevent any misuse of technology through the enactment of laws prohibiting illegal actions. In addition, manufacturers and visionaries continuously develop new products and technologies designed to prevent the hackers from getting the upper hand. The most widely accepted definition of sustainable development is from the Brundtland report, namely, Sustainable Development is development that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. 2 This statement contains two main aspects, first that the present generation s needs are met (intra generational equity) but more importantly, that it is not made more difficult for future generation to meet their needs (inter generational equity). The meaning most immediate to our present understanding would be a bad/unhealthy condition of the body and mind . Another among the others now obsolete presents it as a bad moral quality, condition, or character. Illness was often used as a measure of morality, with the perception that bad morals predisposed to illness and could be contagious like a disease. Elizabeth Gaskell explored these issues of morality the loss and redemption of in her English social novel, Ruth. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The typical fallen woman narrative was weighed down by suffering, warranted as an inevitable consequence of tainting of moral character. Dismissed as outcasts, a downward spiral would ensue ultimately to suicide. Reform was available via female penitentiaries, quarantined as if contagious in institutions away from society. Throughout Ruth, Gaskell suggests that more benefit would be derived from rehabilitation within the community itself. Since Victorian society operated under strict religious principles, causes of disease were often given metaphysical explanations linked to immorality. The emergence of anti contagionist theory occurred during the British cholera epidemic of 1831 to 1832. With this, Swenson claims a direct causal link was affirmed: the filth of immorality not only generated fever, but immoral persons were predisposed to it. Gaskell appears to conform to this convention; fever is a recurring theme to which characters are subjected whenever moral ills are committed. However, beneath the surface, she also pushes against this idea. The first question she confronts the reader with is whether the heroine is a truly immoral figure. In contextualising Ruth fallen woman narrative, Gaskell explores Ruth s background for the reader to gain a greater understanding of how she came to be seduced. Exploring the Schema Theory of Learning Essay Theories of Learning Schema Theory Overview: Schema Theory is part of the cognitive theories of learning module and deals with how the brain processes new knowledge (Chalmers, 2003). Schemata are packets of prior knowledge that have been stored in a learner s memory. Each learner has developed schemata that are based on prior experience and knowledge. Learners seek to connect new information with prior knowledge and use generalizations to assist in organization of information. Schema Theory is focused on conceptual learning and states that knowledge seeks organization in order to develop meaning (Anderson, 1984). Knowledge that does is not easily connected with previous schemata may undergo a form of schema evolution or be discarded (Rumelhart Norman, 1980). Thus, development of new schemata or expanding of existing schemata relies heavily on a learner s prior knowledge. Application: Schema Theory s application in the learning environment can be seen in a variety of ways in the learning environment. Schema Theory relies heavily on building connections to prior learning. Therefore, it is crucial to employ teaching to expand learner s general knowledge and concepts in order to provide a base for schematic connections. Teachers can be seen reminding students of what they already know in order to build on previous knowledge and help make connections to new ideas. However, teachers must understand that not all learner s schemata are the same. A method of instruction that has its roots in Schema Theory and is often used in learning environments is concept mapping. The answer to this, of course, would be nothing. The King has given all his land to Goneril and Regan. After Goneril walks into the room, he tells Lear thou art an O without a figure (1.4. ). This is another way of saying he is empty. He is nothing. These remarks provide a theme continuing throughout the story. The main theme is that nothing is what binds everything together. If Cordelia had not responded nothing then the King would be happy. He would have moved in with Cordelia and she would have supported him. Moreover, Cordelia would have kept her portion and would have married the Duke Burgundy. Thus, her nothing changed everything. In addition, this nothing gives the play comic relief. The Fool ... • 46. Financial Statements And The Financial Position Of A Firm... Introduction The overall purpose of financial statements is the provision of relevant and concise information about the financial position of a firm or other business enterprise. Financial statements allow a manager or analyst to make informed judgments regarding the proven and likely future performance of a firm prior to the making of important investment decisions (Bernstein and Wild, 2000). Purpose of the Income Statement According to Melicher and Norton (2014), the primary purpose of the income statement is to provide a concise report of the revenues generated and expenses incurred by a business entity over a defined time period typically a quarter or a year. Importantly, the revenues and expenses referred to in the income ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This will often include advertising costs, the salaries and commissions earned by the sales force, and general accounting costs such as for the preparation of financial records and statements (Melicher and Norton, 2014). The final type of expenses listed on a typical income statement is depreciation. This refers to the estimates made on the reduction in value of key production and other assets over the period covered by the income statement. This is regarded as a non cash expense and is often applied to items such as plant and equipment, vehicle or aircraft fleets, and some types of real property (Melicher and Norton, 2014). Purpose of the Balance Sheet According to Melicher and Norton (2014), the primary purpose of the balance sheet is to summarize a company s overall financial position at a fixed point in time typically the conclusion of a quarter or year. A balance sheet is differentiated from an income statement in that the former is, effectively, a snapshot of a business s financial position while an income statement provides a reflection of financial performance over time. At its most basic, the balance sheet provides details on the firm s assets, liabilities, and its shareholders equity as at a specific date. Major Types of Assets There are two major categories of assets listed on a typical balance sheet current assets, and property and equipment (sometimes referred to as fixed assets). ... The article Subjective Social Status and Positive indicators of Well Being Among Emerging Adult College Students by, Dr. Zorotovich, Dr. Johnson, and R. Linn state that social status can affect life satisfaction and overall well being in college students. Although students from wealthier families perceived themselves and their families as higher than some in social class, the students from wealthier families might also view themselves as privileged in comparison to students from families with less wealth. These students may feel more successful and may feel more capable of achieving their goals. Furthermore, subjective social status and objective social status might both play an equal role in well being, opposed to only subjective social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, life satisfaction has a positive effect on social skills and self esteem. However, the study showed that parental education had no effect on the student s life satisfaction, but it did show that perceived family and personal social status did have a positive effect. Furthermore, individual subjective happiness is not affected by the parental education levels, but once again perceived family status did. Previous research has consistently linked economic resources and human capital to positive and negative health outcomes across their life span (Zorotovich 630). Dr. Zorotovich et al look at more factors than just that of income level, and how these factors could maximize well being, and takes into account how social status of a person and their family members can also affect well being. • 48. Peyton Approved Summary Recently an operating budget was created for Peyton Approved, a pet supplies manufacturer. The company s operating budget is a projected forecast for the quarter July through September 2015. The budget includes specific calculations of the sales, production, manufacturing (raw materials, direct labor, and factory overhead), selling, and general and administrative operations. After actual activity was recorded and compared to the operating budget for Peyton Approved, variances were found that caused unfavorable results in the company s total direct labor and total direct materials accounts. These variances need to be analyzed and investigated so corrective actions can be taken. A thorough review of the budget variance report indicates a few ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This occurrence could have been caused by the company hiring workers with less skill resulting in a decrease in total wages paid out. This is also a controllable variance (Accounting Tools, n.d.) so managers will have the opportunity to adjust the cost of labor as they see fit. Also, the budgeted cost of labor may have been set too high in the first place causing the total cost to be overstated (Accounting Simplified, n.d.). It s also important to look into whether or not actual figures are being reported as oppose to purposely recording favorable values (Nobles, Mattison, Matsumura, Horngren, 2014). The variance in the labor efficiency may be a direct reflection of the use of less skilled workers. The employees used more time (hours) than expected and the result yielded an unfavorable outcome. If the workers are not experienced enough to complete a task efficiently more hours will be used to compensate production demands. Other causes could be attributed to the condition of the equipment and/or poor supervision (Accounting for Management, n.d.). Faulty equipment could play a role in slowing down production and supervisors must step in immediately to remedy any issues that may cause a noticeable change in budgeted expectations. In the future, Peyton Approved should consider hiring employees that match the skill level required to perform as expected. They should also do an evaluation to determine the conditions of their equipment (Garcia, n.d.) and advise production managers on the proper procedures to motivate their workers to achieve company goals. Upon examination of the material variance, it s noted that there were no direct material cost variances. The explanation is simple; Peyton Approved was spot on when they priced their parts. There was no gain nor loss connected to direct materials. Unfortunately, the materials were not used efficiently so the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
