Imperialism In Brave New World
figuratively. When such systems of oppressors and the oppressed arise, members of society begin to
question such ideologies. In the Heart of Darkness, Marlow explores the brutality that lies within the
endless inescapable power that is associated with imperialism. He sees past the materialistic aspects of
wealth and interprets the actual reality. This is especially clear when Marlow expresses that They were
dying slowly it was very clear. They were not enemies, they were not criminals, and they were nothing
earthly now nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation, lying confusedly in the greenish
gloom. (Conrad 31). Marlow recognizes that the slaves casted in chains were not of any threat nor
were they dangerous criminals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, his experience in the Congo made him feel that the entire journey was like a weary
pilgrimage amongst hints of nightmares (Conrad 79). Pilgrimage may sound light filled and blessed
with great intentions. However, the goal itself is not so righteous. It is more of an act of robbery,
violence, greed, and power than nobility. Whereas, In Brave New World, John the savage is a white
male who is set aside from both Civilization and the savage reservations. He was born from an actual
womb, which is prohibited by the state, but is also not physically similar to the those in the savage
reservations; therefore, he is excluded by both parties. When Bernard exposes John to the world state,
John feels a sense of disconnection which later drives him into utter madness. For instance, When
Helmholtz and Bernard find John in the bathroom throwing up, they hear John utter that he ate
civilization (Huxley 213) . Civilization had poisoned him; thus he cannot stand the inhume customs
that the new world offers. Although he despised the savage reservations, he misses the ability to act
human. John is left with the hope to recapture everything that civilization no longer has to offer,

Sacrifices In Medea
Medea is ancient tragedy tale that is the work of a famous Greek playwright known as Euripides. The
plot of the story revolves around Medea as she seeks revenge on her husband Jason for leaving her to
marry another woman, a Greek princess from Corinth. Feeling betrayed and greatly wronged Medea
embarks on a vengeful mission that in the end sees her killing his husband s new wife together with
her two children. It is clear that at the heart of Euripides s tragedy lies a string of extreme sacrifices
that stem from a passionate love affair. Medea is a woman of extreme emotion and behavior. She had a
passionate love for Jason; she sacrificed a lot to be with Jason, committing unspeakable acts. Her

Medea mourns O my father, my city, you I deserted; my brother I shamefully murdered (Euripides

to be a torment to others and herself to because her passion appears to be stronger than her reason.
Medea cries What do I gain from living any longer? (Euripides 83) Passion can be a great destructive
agent if it is stronger than reason. In Medea, it ends up being destructive not only to her peace but also
to her children, Creon, Creon s daughter, and Jason. Despite realizing the consequences of what she is
about to do, Medea is still unable to contain her passions, and she gives in to her passions request.
Through her monologue, we also see her two sided personality. Her maternal side almost convinces
her to save her children, but her passion for revenge proves to be strong. She says, I shall take my
children from the land why should I harm them to hurt their father (Euripides 13). Euripides through
Medea s character expresses his belief that passion is a two sided ideology. Medea s irrational passion
for revenge drives her to do the unimaginable. She says, Do I want to be laughed at for letting my
enemies off scot free (Euripides 49). Medea s character represents a fight between right and wrong,

In July of 2014, the most important events of in the history of financial market in the GCC (Gulf

direct foreign investment and CMA has drafted rules for Qualified Foreign Institutions. Its equity
market (Tadawul) valued around USD 530 billion and which will open an opportunity for the largest
global investment funds to inject their funds into one of the most lucrative emerging markets.
However, once the announcement hit the news, Tadawul market index hit the 10,000 point for the first
time in six years as the market react with optimism over the news. The Saudi Stock market was
limited to Saudi and GCC investors only and for those outside of the region, their only way of
investing is through swaps and mutual funds (Butt, 2014). However, different institutional investors

investors. Bassel Khatoun, the head of MENA equities at Franklin Templeton Investments said As the

Questions On Historical Criticisms Of Derivatives Essay
Introduction Derivatives tend to be an intricate topic in accounting. So to begin, a very basic
understanding of a derivative is that they are a binding contract between two or more parties. The
contract is for a future transaction of some underlying financial asset. The purpose for companies to
implement derivatives are to aid them in managing risk by using a type of financial forwards, futures,
options, or swaps. For example, a forward contract is when Company A believes Company B s stock
price will substantially increase over the next year. However, Company A does not have the resources
to purchase the stock today. Therefore, Company A and B enter a contract for delivery of 10,000
shares of Company B in one year at an agreed upon price. However, derivatives are incredibly more
exhaustive than the rudimentary illustration above.
Thus, this discussion will examine scholarly articles to provide insight on historical criticisms of
derivatives, why derivatives tend to be a more complicated accounting topic, implications for auditors
and analysts, how FASB is making attempts to simplify derivatives, and lastly, concluding remarks.
Historical Criticisms When FASB first released the exposure draft for derivatives, it received strong
criticisms. Dolde and Swieringa (1997), shortly after the exposure draft was released, listed some of
the major criticisms. Dolde and Swieringa (1997, 2) noted that, Many...believe that [derivative
standards] are too complex to be understandable,

Conceited Judgment and the Pitfall of Pride
In both of Flannery O Connor s short stories A Good Man is Hard to Find and Good Country People,
there is a central theme about the negative effects of trusting one s own judgment too readily, as well
as using religion to manipulate people. It is easy to see multiple connections to this theme in the two
short stories, although the specific events themselves are different. For instance, Hulga from Good
Country People believes her intelligence allows her to see people s true character, but she is ultimately
left alone full of despair when her faith in herself and her leg is ironically taken away. In the same
way, the unnamed grandmother in A Good Man is Hard to Find feels her morals and experience in life
allow her to judge other characters without fault. Therefore, the two short stories are similar to each
other because the plots, characters, and misuses of religion reflect the central theme of trust and
manipulation. Although the details of these two stories differ in many aspects, they share a similar plot
that follows a theme about people trusting their own judgments too easily. In Good Country People,
Hulga meets a Bible salesman, Manly Pointer, who seems to have an innocent aura around him. He
bored Mrs. Hopewell, Hulga s mother, but she couldn t be rude to him. He was just good country
people, you know (Good Country 445). However, her personal view of him is tragically incorrect.
Pointer persuades Hulga to go on a date with him, inviting Hulga out

Organizational Culture and Structure
Organizational Culture and Structure
The structure of an organization determines the allocation of roles, regulations, and responsibilities,
and therefore builds a basis for the culture in an organization. There is a constant relationship between
organizational structure and organizational culture that provides a theme within an organization. Both
can be difficult to clearly define and distinguish when analyzing an organization. Organization culture
is a perspective into the company s personality; it provides descriptive values, principals, traditions,
and a way of doing things that effect how members view the organization (Robbins, DeCenzo,

Stories of innovation inspire creativity and help build the strength of an organization s culture. A
strong organizational culture holds key values that are shared with all members. It is the responsibility
of leaders to uphold an organization s culture to ensure that there is a proper foundation that binds the
structure.
Organizational Structure Any organization should have its own operating structure in order to reach
success. Organizational structure is defined as a hierarchy of people that determine roles of authority,
communications, and the duties of an organization (Robbins et al., 2013). Organizations must organize
their structure to meet the needs of that particular organization, and assure that it resembles the values
instilled by the organizational culture. The development of culture through an organization is a natural
process that is dependent upon the instilled values of the leaders and members in the organization (O
Neil, 2011). Leaders can still influence the culture by sticking to their values and implementing a
strong and effective organizational structure. There are several models that organizations can utilize to
structure the elements within the organization.
The structure of an organization can be divided into two generic organization structure models. Below

Racial Profiling by Police is Not Justified Essay
Even the United States struggles with issues of racial discrimination despite being a society highly
based on immigrants and multicultural diversity. On one hand, people frown on treatment based on
race, whether that is on an individual or group level. On the other, people are tired and annoyed by the
seemingly constant call of discrimination. All of these feelings culminate into the debate pertaining to
the use of racial profiling. Likewise, there are some individuals that hold a certain level of acceptance
in regard to racial profiling. However, what is lost in the process because of that acceptance? There are
many components that need to be thought about in reference to the use of racial profiling. In addition,

In relation to the debate of racial profiling, Taylor and Whitney define racial profiling as the practice
of questioning blacks in disproportionate numbers in expectation that they are more likely than people
of other races to be criminals (Taylor Whitney, 2002). Statistics show that African Americans and
Hispanics commit more crime than Caucasians, with 90% of the 1.7 million interracial crimes
stemming from the hands of African American men. Even looking at these numbers, does that make it
okay for the police to arrest and interrogate these racial minorities at such a high frequency? Where
are these statistics coming from? How accurate are they? Does the media provide a skewed analysis of
these findings? These are the types of questions that need to be addressed in regard to evaluating the
validity of racial profiling.
The annual National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) has been the primary method for gathering
data and providing these staggering statistics. The NCVS provides information gathered from the
victim, which includes information on crimes that went unreported to the police. The Uniform Crime
Report (UCR) is also a valid reference for gathering crime information within the United States. The
UCR only has information regarding crimes that were reported to the police, as well as arrests. Both
forums are used by the FBI. In addition, researchers use this information for their research. Even

Aluminum Trailers Are A Great Option For Your Needs
Before you purchase a trailer, it is imperative to choose what material you d like the trailer to be made

How Did Friedman Who Wrote The Bible Review
Who Wrote the Bible Review For many, the Hebrew bible is read and accepted without question. It
plays a significant role in the practice of many religions and yet not many dare to wonder who wrote
such sacred writings that would still be read to this very day. For generations, it was almost unheard of
to ask or even fathom the identity of the author. Richard Elliot Friedman, a biblical scholar and
graduate from Harvard University, explores, studies, and analyzes the bible to discover who wrote it.
Having earned a master degree in theology, B.A degree in Philosophy, and master degree in Hebrew
literature, Friedman proves to be a knowledgeable expert in his field of studies. From the years of
work he invested into, Friedman aims to provide convincing evidence that the book is written by four
persons through historical, archaeological, logical proof. Friedman s structure to prove that source J
and E were written by different authors was jointed together because they complimented each other in
their differences. Friedman believes that source J was written by a man in the southern kingdom of
Judah between the time of 848 B.C and 722 B.C while the author of source E was written in the
northern kingdom of Israel between 922 B.C. and 722 B.C. The narration of the stories and the time
period it was written in was used to support this idea. One of the stories he used was the story of the
twins. In the story, the younger brother, Jacob, gets his father

2.1 INTRODUCTION
The increase of electronic equipments has caused the increase in the nonlinear loads and due to these
loads power quality is being deteriorated. The supply voltage is distorted due to harmonic currents
drawn from the supply by nonlinear loads. Distorted currents and voltage cause the user s equipment
to not work properly, conductors will overheat and may decrease the efficiency and life of the
equipment. Usually a passive LC power filter is employed to wipe out the current harmonics ... Show

The parallel LC circuits create the very high impedance to the unwanted signal and a series circuit
forms very low impedance passage to ground at same frequency.
2.4 DISADVANTAGES OF PASSIVE FILTER
Following are the disadvantages of the passive filters:
Filter impedance should be smaller than the source impedance for mitigating the source current
harmonics and hence compensation characteristics depend on system impedance.
Overload condition can arise in the passive filter because of harmonics circulation arising from
nonlinear loads which are connected at the connection point of passive filters.
They are not recommended for the variable loads because their design is for some specific reactive
power and changing the load can detune the filter.
Resonances either in series or in parallel may appear in the system. [7]
Passive filters do not use active elements and hence signal gain is not provided by them.
Tuning of passive filters requires a lot of time and they are expensive when produced in large
quantities.
Passive filters higher than the 2nd order are complex and very difficult to design them.

Langstone Hughes Harlem
At first glance, the poem Harlem by Langstone Hughes appears to be just a simple poem about
thwarted dreams and desires. However, this poem is much more than what it first appears to be. This

faced by African Americans, during an era when racism played a large part in the average mindset of
society. The title of this poem is named after a predominantly African American neighborhood in
uptown Manhattan. This neighborhood acted as a sort of sanctuary for the African American people, in
a racist society. The people who lived in Harlem had far more opportunities to freely express
themselves and to escape segregation. Langstone Hughes s cleaver

The Family Of Victorian Literature And Culture
What do you see as the significant elements in representations of the family in Victorian literature and
culture?
Intro
There are many elements in representations of the family in Victorian literature and culture. In this
essay, through Bronte s Jane Eyre, Dickens Oliver Twist, and Gaskell s Mary Barton, I will be
focusing on family in relation to how society perceives and affects the individual in the family, how
and whether a family is formed through blood relation or situation, In the mid Victorian era, novelists
were prone to use their literature as a method of discovering and drawing attention to the conditions of
society, classes, industrialism and family ties. They bring their own individual experiences, and
portray it through realist and fictional novels.
Mary Barton
Although class struggle is most clearly seen in public confrontations, the family is the mechanism

school. He meets friends and makes adversaries. In battle school, out in space, Ender, the young boy is
a genius and is taught many tactics to destroy their prime enemy the buggers. He excels in school and

Another character that best show the theme life is a game is Bonzo. Bonzo is Ender s adversary. His
life was also a game because he is an enemy, he has the advantage and he dies. Bonzo hated Ender the
minute Ender stepped into Bonzo s platoon. Right then and there Bonzo became Ender s enemy. In
many combat games there is an enemy who is trying to make it more difficult. Bonzo who is an
enemy wanted Ender gone because Bonzo was jealous of Ender s winning streak. Bonzo hated him
and he was furious. On page 205, Crazy Tom questioned, That some of the older boys want to kill
you? This quote refers to Bonzo and other soldiers. They are Ender s enemy and they wanted to
annihilate him. Every enemy s goal is to destroy their victim and Bonzo tried with an advantage.
Advantage is also another reason why life is a game. While playing games somebody always has the
advantage. In this case Bonzo brought other soldiers to confront Ender. Page 207, bottom paragraph
describes how seven boys were watching Ender in the showers. This example demonstrates the
advantage that Bonzo has over Ender. Whether it is two against one or fighting soldiers without any
weapons. Advantage is a contributing factor in games and that portrays how Bonzo s life is a game.

Abraham Lincoln Essay
Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln was the 16Th President of America. He was the first republican
that was elected as President. He ran for senate two times and lost both. When he was in office he was
mostly occupied with the states that broke away from the Union, who was named the Confederate
States of America. The first to break away was South Carolina followed by 6 other states before the
inauguration of Abraham Lincoln. And then four more at the beginning of the Civil War,Battle of Fort
Sumter. Lincoln was inaugurated into office in March of 1861. Lincoln was one of the reasons the pro

Lincoln had made the Emancipation Proclamation, which banned slavery to the CSA(Confederate
States of America)that didn t come back to the Union by Jan 1, 1863. It also named the states it
applied to. But it didn t name the boarder states of Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland and Delaware
because those states did not actually declare secession so they didn t free any slaves in those states at
the time. They also didn t name Tennessee because it was mostly back to the Union by then. Most
slaves where not let go immediately but the Act freed thousands of slaves.
Lincoln thought people would think that the Emancipation Proclamation would be only temporary due
to the war and be soon forgotten. So what Abraham did is he made the 13Th Amendment. The 13Th
Amendment stated that slavery was illegal to all states, and also that it is illegal to make people work
against their will to benefit themselves, which is called involuntary servitude.
The C.S.A collapsed when generals Robert E.Lee and Joesph E. Johnston surrendered their armies
over to the Union. Later the Union soldiers captured Jefferson Davis(The Confederate President) on
May of 1865. At almost the end of the war Lincoln had a very reasonable view on what the nation

The effects of Lead Nitrate contamination on the plant Brassica rapa

Teacher: Jennifer Kelly
Abstract
In my biology class we conducted an experiment to determine if there was a direct correlation
between the concentration of lead levels in soil and the effect it has on plant synthesis and plant
height. The specimen used in the experiment is a species of plant, Brassica rapa. Seeds of B. rapa were
careful planted within every cell of a cubical that was filled with six different concentrations of lead
which was our treatment group and the control was the cubical with no lead soil in it. Plant height and
temperature were recorded with a thermostat and a mm ruler. The results show that lead concentration
does not have a relationship with plant height except in concentration of 100 mg/kg and 2000 mg/kg.
During this three week experiment, the mean of over a hundred students plant heights were recorded
and all the student s plants showed similar results meaning lead nitrate concentrations in soil does not
affect the growth.
Keywords: Brassica Rapa; Lead nitrate Concentration

Violent Crime Research Paper
Violent Crime Research Paper
Nothing does more to tear our families apart than violent crime, guns, gangs, drugs, and the fear that
walks alongside those terrors. Violent crime and victim rights have become a major concern for most
citizens in the United States of America. Statistics indicate a decline in violent crimes in our country
and an increase in our national prison population. Released prisoners commit most violent crimes.
Gun control legislation, reform programs, victim rights awareness, and other programs are abundant in
our country, but do little to alleviate violent crime. In this paper I will try to present the liberal and
conservative views on this issue as well as my own views.
Violent crime is a complex problem and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This differential is in part due to a higher rate of violent crime in the U.S. and in part to more severe
criminal justice policies. The reasons why other industrialized nations have less violent crime than in
the U.S. is clearly not because they lock up more offenders and thereby reduce crime. We could debate
the various factors that contribute to our high level of violence but a failure to incarcerate is clearly
not one of them (Mauer 21 24).
In order to analyze the decline in crime in the 1990s in greater detail the project team examined the
relationship between imprisonment and crime at the state level from 1991 to 1998. The reason for
doing so is that national trends often obscure substantial variations among the states in the degree to
which imprisonment is utilized as a response to crime. During the seven year period, for example,
Texas led the nation with a 144% rise in its rate of incarceration. Maine increased its prison population
by just 2%. The national average increase in the rate of incarceration was 47% (Mauer 21 24). The
statistics are significant and they are gratifying. We must be honest, too many families, and too many
communities, still live in fear. Violent crimes may be at their lowest levels in a generation, but even a
single crime is one too many.
Even if statistics indicate a decline in violent crime, citizens are still concerned about becoming a
victim of a crime. Our children cannot

Essay On German Boy A Child In War
Book Reflection: German Boy: A Child in War
Overview
As the allies and the Soviets continually make ground against Nazi Germany, the realm in which the
term victims would be used equally makes deviations. This state lasted for more than a decade, but is
minutely appreciated by many particularly because many refute to perceive the people of Germany as
victims from any angle. After all, very few casualties were from this region when compared to those
that experienced the full extent of depravity in the hands of the Nazi Germany. The distinction
between the Nazi aspect of this country and the bit of it that did not hold such a burly conviction is an
issue many at the time were not interested appreciating; every German was viewed as a Nazi.
German Boy: A Child in War by Wolfgang Samuel is a book based on the true story of the plight of
the German people as the Third Reich crumbled in the 1940s. It tells of a side of the story that many
readers could not have found anywhere else as not many would tell it as Wolfgang has.

Emanation Of Churches In The 10th Century
At the height of the 10th century, great invasions which had continually threatened the West for the
previous seven centuries had come to a cease, and religious construction began to boom. During the
10th Century in Rome, Emperor Otto I followed the example of Charlemagne in claiming the
foundation of a stable order based on the Christian faith. Though still troubled, the tenth century
became a pivotal period for religious construction. Leading into the 11th century, the crusades were
launched to free the Holy Places in Palestine from Islam, which furthered the boost of building more
churches in Western Europe and to the development of a mature Romanesque style (Kostoff 296). The

Analysis of Three Books About Gorbachev
The history of the Soviet Union is complicated and fascinating. In the course of only seventy years
this country has seen the development of the totally new system of state, economic growth, the growth
of hopes for the brighter future , and then the sudden and expected by no one collapse of the whole
system leading to chaos, wars, and confusion. One period is especially important in order to realize
how did things finally started to change after the seventy years of blindly pursuing the dream of
communism which left the Soviet Union in a very bad economical and moral state, and this period is

This influence lasted for years and the fact that Gorbachev has become
westernized in his appearance, manners, dress and the image he projects of tolerance and cordial
behavior, all the small signs which mark him as different from the usual Komsomol and Party boss , is
according to Medvedev due to a great extent to the fact that Mlynar was Gorbachev s roommate
(Medvedev, 1986, p. 43).
Although the first part of the book is certainly interesting and important I would like to concentrate on
the second part of the book since it is directly deals with the subject that interests me most, that is the
years when Gorbachev was in power and the development of the new course in the Soviet life called
perestroika. From just reading the first paragraph it is obvious that the author approves of the new
leader. Medvedev writes: For the first time in
Soviet history, the leadership succession has meant more than the arrival of a new leader and the
possibility of the implementation of the new policies. The
Gorbachev succession marks the appearance of a new political generation which differs from the old
guard in style, knowledge and historical vision....Gorbachev represents a younger post war political
generation, a generation which started its professional Party or state career during the more liberal
Krushchev era (p. 165). Medvedev quotes some of the very enthusiastic
Western newspaper comments which called Gorbachev a bright, incisive,

Social Darwinism Book Report
Social Darwinism is the theory of evolution applied to human society. Social Darwinism was a term
formed in the late 19th century to describe the idea that humans, like plants and animals, compete in a
struggle for existence. The theory of evolution came about in 1859, when Charles Darwin, an English
naturalist and geologist, published a book called, On the Origin of Species. The book talks about
Darwin s theory of evolution by natural selection and survival of the fittest. Darwin believed that
organisms change over time as a result of changes in physical or behavioral traits. One of Darwin s
main points in his book was, Survival of the fittest. This refers to an animal s ability to survive and

Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan, and Henry Ford. These were just a few business men that
followed the idea of Social Darwinism. In the late 1820 s, Cornelius Vanderbilt went into business on
his own, building steamships in the New York area, eventually becoming one of the largest steamship
operators. In the 1860 s, the railroad industry was entering a period of great expansion, so he shifted
his attention to make railroad transportation more efficient. Vanderbilt s goal was to control the steel
industry. He bought out competitors and suppliers, giving him total power to set the cost of his product
to what he wanted. Vanderbilt used the idea of Social Darwinism when he transferred from working
the shipping to railroad business. He knew that if he kept his shipping business, it wouldn t be as
profitable later on. That s why he invested his money, focus, and time into building a successful
railroad industry. At a young age, John D. Rockefeller acted much like a young businessman, selling
candy to local children and supporting his family. In 1870, Rockefeller established the Standard Oil
Company of Ohio. He eventually controlled 90 percent of the refining business. With his large profits,
he drove his competitors out of business by selling the oil cheaper than what it cost to produce the oil.
After taking total control, he raised the price of oil to make his money back. In 1873, Andrew
Carnegie entered the steel business and by 1899, the Carnegie Steel Company manufactured more
steel than all the factories in Great Britain. Carnegie s success was to searching for ways to make
better products more cheaply and hired chemists to improve the quality of the steel. He used a vertical
integration which he bought out his suppliers, giving him total power of the cost and quality of his
product. Carnegie was greatly influenced by Herbert Spencer s, Social Darwinism. Spencer believed

them try to maintain this positive image for their audience. The inspiration for many hip hop artist
today, Tupac Shakur is a prime example of one who was able to pull himself out of a dark place.
Throughout his life, Tupac has faced many obstacles, the largest being his family. Associating with the
Black Panther several members Shakur s family has dealt with the law. His godparents killing a state
trooper and teacher and stepfather wanted on the FBI s Most Wanted. Although not entirely similar,
Michael Jackson also had vast amounts of obstacles in his life. From a young age, Jackson had utilized
his talents with his brothers to from the band the Jackson 5. Allegedly, he would often be overworked
by his father to push for more popularity for the boys. This lack of a childhood contributed to him
putting sums of money in his theme park and even being accused of being a pedophile for the degree
in which he was around children. Regardless, both had one thing in common. They fought. Unlike the
people stated before, these people decided that they did not want to become their obstacles. They did
not want to become the people who were a bad influence on them. As a result, they decided to do
everything they could.

  • 2. Imperialism In Brave New World figuratively. When such systems of oppressors and the oppressed arise, members of society begin to question such ideologies. In the Heart of Darkness, Marlow explores the brutality that lies within the endless inescapable power that is associated with imperialism. He sees past the materialistic aspects of wealth and interprets the actual reality. This is especially clear when Marlow expresses that They were dying slowly it was very clear. They were not enemies, they were not criminals, and they were nothing earthly now nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation, lying confusedly in the greenish gloom. (Conrad 31). Marlow recognizes that the slaves casted in chains were not of any threat nor were they dangerous criminals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, his experience in the Congo made him feel that the entire journey was like a weary pilgrimage amongst hints of nightmares (Conrad 79). Pilgrimage may sound light filled and blessed with great intentions. However, the goal itself is not so righteous. It is more of an act of robbery, violence, greed, and power than nobility. Whereas, In Brave New World, John the savage is a white male who is set aside from both Civilization and the savage reservations. He was born from an actual womb, which is prohibited by the state, but is also not physically similar to the those in the savage reservations; therefore, he is excluded by both parties. When Bernard exposes John to the world state, John feels a sense of disconnection which later drives him into utter madness. For instance, When Helmholtz and Bernard find John in the bathroom throwing up, they hear John utter that he ate civilization (Huxley 213) . Civilization had poisoned him; thus he cannot stand the inhume customs that the new world offers. Although he despised the savage reservations, he misses the ability to act human. John is left with the hope to recapture everything that civilization no longer has to offer, including religion, actual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is clear that at the heart of Euripides s tragedy lies a string of extreme sacrifices that stem from a passionate love affair. Medea is a woman of extreme emotion and behavior. She is bound to be a torment to others and herself to because her passion appears to be stronger than her reason. Medea cries What do I gain from living any longer? (Euripides 83) Passion can be a great destructive agent if it is stronger than reason. In Medea, it ends up being destructive not only to her peace but also to her children, Creon, Creon s daughter, and Jason. Despite realizing the consequences of what she is about to do, Medea is still unable to contain her passions, and she gives in to her passions request. Through her monologue, we also see her two sided personality. Her maternal side almost convinces her to save her children, but her passion for revenge proves to be strong. She says, I shall take my children from the land why should I harm them to hurt their father (Euripides 13). Euripides through Medea s character expresses his belief that passion is a two sided ideology. Medea s irrational passion for revenge drives her to do the unimaginable. She says, Do I want to be laughed at for letting my enemies off scot free (Euripides 49). Medea s character represents a fight between right and wrong, mother ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Questions On Historical Criticisms Of Derivatives Essay Introduction Derivatives tend to be an intricate topic in accounting. So to begin, a very basic understanding of a derivative is that they are a binding contract between two or more parties. The contract is for a future transaction of some underlying financial asset. The purpose for companies to implement derivatives are to aid them in managing risk by using a type of financial forwards, futures, options, or swaps. For example, a forward contract is when Company A believes Company B s stock price will substantially increase over the next year. However, Company A does not have the resources to purchase the stock today. Therefore, Company A and B enter a contract for delivery of 10,000 shares of Company B in one year at an agreed upon price. However, derivatives are incredibly more exhaustive than the rudimentary illustration above. Thus, this discussion will examine scholarly articles to provide insight on historical criticisms of derivatives, why derivatives tend to be a more complicated accounting topic, implications for auditors and analysts, how FASB is making attempts to simplify derivatives, and lastly, concluding remarks. Historical Criticisms When FASB first released the exposure draft for derivatives, it received strong criticisms. Dolde and Swieringa (1997), shortly after the exposure draft was released, listed some of the major criticisms. Dolde and Swieringa (1997, 2) noted that, Many...believe that [derivative standards] are too complex to be understandable, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Conceited Judgment and the Pitfall of Pride In both of Flannery O Connor s short stories A Good Man is Hard to Find and Good Country People, there is a central theme about the negative effects of trusting one s own judgment too readily, as well as using religion to manipulate people. It is easy to see multiple connections to this theme in the two short stories, although the specific events themselves are different. For instance, Hulga from Good Country People believes her intelligence allows her to see people s true character, but she is ultimately left alone full of despair when her faith in herself and her leg is ironically taken away. In the same way, the unnamed grandmother in A Good Man is Hard to Find feels her morals and experience in life allow her to judge other characters without fault. Therefore, the two short stories are similar to each other because the plots, characters, and misuses of religion reflect the central theme of trust and manipulation. Although the details of these two stories differ in many aspects, they share a similar plot that follows a theme about people trusting their own judgments too easily. In Good Country People, Hulga meets a Bible salesman, Manly Pointer, who seems to have an innocent aura around him. He bored Mrs. Hopewell, Hulga s mother, but she couldn t be rude to him. He was just good country people, you know (Good Country 445). However, her personal view of him is tragically incorrect. Pointer persuades Hulga to go on a date with him, inviting Hulga out ... Organizational Culture and Structure Organizational Culture and Structure The structure of an organization determines the allocation of roles, regulations, and responsibilities, and therefore builds a basis for the culture in an organization. There is a constant relationship between organizational structure and organizational culture that provides a theme within an organization. Both can be difficult to clearly define and distinguish when analyzing an organization. A strong organizational culture holds key values that are shared with all members. It is the responsibility of leaders to uphold an organization s culture to ensure that there is a proper foundation that binds the structure. Organizational Structure Any organization should have its own operating structure in order to reach success. Organizational structure is defined as a hierarchy of people that determine roles of authority, communications, and the duties of an organization (Robbins et al., 2013). Organizations must organize their structure to meet the needs of that particular organization, and assure that it resembles the values instilled by the organizational culture. The development of culture through an organization is a natural process that is dependent upon the instilled values of the leaders and members in the organization (O Neil, 2011). Leaders can still influence the culture by sticking to their values and implementing a strong and effective organizational structure. Racial Profiling by Police is Not Justified Essay Even the United States struggles with issues of racial discrimination despite being a society highly based on immigrants and multicultural diversity. On one hand, people frown on treatment based on race, whether that is on an individual or group level. On the other, people are tired and annoyed by the seemingly constant call of discrimination. All of these feelings culminate into the debate pertaining to the use of racial profiling. Likewise, there are some individuals that hold a certain level of acceptance in regard to racial profiling. However, what is lost in the process because of that acceptance? There are many components that need to be thought about in reference to the use of racial profiling. In addition, it can be viewed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In relation to the debate of racial profiling, Taylor and Whitney define racial profiling as the practice of questioning blacks in disproportionate numbers in expectation that they are more likely than people of other races to be criminals (Taylor Whitney, 2002). Statistics show that African Americans and Hispanics commit more crime than Caucasians, with 90% of the 1.7 million interracial crimes stemming from the hands of African American men. Even looking at these numbers, does that make it okay for the police to arrest and interrogate these racial minorities at such a high frequency? Where are these statistics coming from? How accurate are they? Does the media provide a skewed analysis of these findings? These are the types of questions that need to be addressed in regard to evaluating the validity of racial profiling. The annual National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) has been the primary method for gathering data and providing these staggering statistics. The NCVS provides information gathered from the victim, which includes information on crimes that went unreported to the police. The Uniform Crime Report (UCR) is also a valid reference for gathering crime information within the United States. The UCR only has information regarding crimes that were reported to the police, as well as arrests. Both forums are used by the FBI. In addition, researchers use this information for their research. It plays a significant role in the practice of many religions and yet not many dare to wonder who wrote such sacred writings that would still be read to this very day. For generations, it was almost unheard of to ask or even fathom the identity of the author. Richard Elliot Friedman, a biblical scholar and graduate from Harvard University, explores, studies, and analyzes the bible to discover who wrote it. Having earned a master degree in theology, B.A degree in Philosophy, and master degree in Hebrew literature, Friedman proves to be a knowledgeable expert in his field of studies. From the years of work he invested into, Friedman aims to provide convincing evidence that the book is written by four persons through historical, archaeological, logical proof. Friedman s structure to prove that source J and E were written by different authors was jointed together because they complimented each other in their differences. Friedman believes that source J was written by a man in the southern kingdom of Judah between the time of 848 B.C and 722 B.C while the author of source E was written in the northern kingdom of Israel between 922 B.C. and 722 B.C. The parallel LC circuits create the very high impedance to the unwanted signal and a series circuit forms very low impedance passage to ground at same frequency. 2.4 DISADVANTAGES OF PASSIVE FILTER Following are the disadvantages of the passive filters: Filter impedance should be smaller than the source impedance for mitigating the source current harmonics and hence compensation characteristics depend on system impedance. Overload condition can arise in the passive filter because of harmonics circulation arising from nonlinear loads which are connected at the connection point of passive filters. They are not recommended for the variable loads because their design is for some specific reactive power and changing the load can detune the filter. Resonances either in series or in parallel may appear in the system. [7] Passive filters do not use active elements and hence signal gain is not provided by them. Tuning of passive filters requires a lot of time and they are expensive when produced in large quantities. Passive filters higher than the 2nd order are complex and very difficult to design them. ... • 22. The Family Of Victorian Literature And Culture What do you see as the significant elements in representations of the family in Victorian literature and culture? Intro There are many elements in representations of the family in Victorian literature and culture. In this essay, through Bronte s Jane Eyre, Dickens Oliver Twist, and Gaskell s Mary Barton, I will be focusing on family in relation to how society perceives and affects the individual in the family, how and whether a family is formed through blood relation or situation, In the mid Victorian era, novelists were prone to use their literature as a method of discovering and drawing attention to the conditions of society, classes, industrialism and family ties. They bring their own individual experiences, and portray it through realist and fictional novels. Mary Barton Although class struggle is most clearly seen in public confrontations, the family is the mechanism which reproduces class attitudes, and parent child relationships, as worked out in the extraneous sections of this novel, demonstrate how the personal becomes the political. If we approach the novel through the ethics of family, therefore, we do not detract from its value as an exploration of class relations, but instead of seeing it as an industrial novel flawed by political naivety and superfluous sub plots, we can see it as an attempt to understand the interaction of class and gender. In particular, its opposed class based images of fatherhood prompt us to re think the political concept of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They also didn t name Tennessee because it was mostly back to the Union by then. Most slaves where not let go immediately but the Act freed thousands of slaves. Lincoln thought people would think that the Emancipation Proclamation would be only temporary due to the war and be soon forgotten. So what Abraham did is he made the 13Th Amendment. The 13Th Amendment stated that slavery was illegal to all states, and also that it is illegal to make people work against their will to benefit themselves, which is called involuntary servitude. The C.S.A collapsed when generals Robert E.Lee and Joesph E. Johnston surrendered their armies over to the Union. The specimen used in the experiment is a species of plant, Brassica rapa. Seeds of B. rapa were careful planted within every cell of a cubical that was filled with six different concentrations of lead which was our treatment group and the control was the cubical with no lead soil in it. Plant height and temperature were recorded with a thermostat and a mm ruler. This differential is in part due to a higher rate of violent crime in the U.S. and in part to more severe criminal justice policies. The reasons why other industrialized nations have less violent crime than in the U.S. is clearly not because they lock up more offenders and thereby reduce crime. We could debate the various factors that contribute to our high level of violence but a failure to incarcerate is clearly not one of them (Mauer 21 24). In order to analyze the decline in crime in the 1990s in greater detail the project team examined the relationship between imprisonment and crime at the state level from 1991 to 1998. The reason for doing so is that national trends often obscure substantial variations among the states in the degree to which imprisonment is utilized as a response to crime. During the seven year period, for example, Texas led the nation with a 144% rise in its rate of incarceration. Maine increased its prison population by just 2%. The national average increase in the rate of incarceration was 47% (Mauer 21 24). The statistics are significant and they are gratifying. We must be honest, too many families, and too many communities, still live in fear. Violent crimes may be at their lowest levels in a generation, but even a single crime is one too many. • 41. Social Darwinism Book Report Social Darwinism is the theory of evolution applied to human society. The theory of evolution came about in 1859, when Charles Darwin, an English naturalist and geologist, published a book called, On the Origin of Species. The book talks about Darwin s theory of evolution by natural selection and survival of the fittest. These were just a few business men that followed the idea of Social Darwinism. In the late 1820 s, Cornelius Vanderbilt went into business on his own, building steamships in the New York area, eventually becoming one of the largest steamship operators. In the 1860 s, the railroad industry was entering a period of great expansion, so he shifted his attention to make railroad transportation more efficient. Vanderbilt s goal was to control the steel industry. He bought out competitors and suppliers, giving him total power to set the cost of his product to what he wanted. Vanderbilt used the idea of Social Darwinism when he transferred from working the shipping to railroad business. He knew that if he kept his shipping business, it wouldn t be as profitable later on. That s why he invested his money, focus, and time into building a successful railroad industry. At a young age, John D. Rockefeller acted much like a young businessman, selling candy to local children and supporting his family. In 1870, Rockefeller established the Standard Oil Company of Ohio. He eventually controlled 90 percent of the refining business. With his large profits, he drove his competitors out of business by selling the oil cheaper than what it cost to produce the oil. After taking total control, he raised the price of oil to make his money back. In 1873, Andrew Carnegie entered the steel business and by 1899, the Carnegie Steel Company manufactured more steel than all the factories in Great Britain. Carnegie s success was to searching for ways to make better products more cheaply and hired chemists to improve the quality of the steel. He used a vertical integration which he bought out his suppliers, giving him total power of the cost and quality of his product. Carnegie was greatly influenced by Herbert Spencer s, Social Darwinism. Spencer believed that the poor were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
