The Most Convincing Approach Of Japan And China
Tyler Olsen
Dr. Kishida
HIST 110 02
21 October 2015
The Most Convincing Approach For many years Western nations in Europe and North America had
wanted to expand their trade with Japan and China; however, the people of the two Asian countries
believed that the Westerners were barbarians with useless goods and religious beliefs that would
challenge their traditions. Up until the 1800s, Japan and China had successfully restricted the
influence of Western nations within their countries. Their ability to remain isolated from Westerners,
however, quickly faded throughout the 1800s when the modernized Western nations grew more
powerful and demanding. Due to trying to stay isolated from Western ideas and religious beliefs,
Japan and China fell ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Feng Guifen s first good idea in his plan was to learn how to build better ships and guns from the
Westerners, or barbarians as he liked to call them. He realized that China was turning into a weak
country from being isolated from Western ideas. In the beginning of his article, Feng said that the
Chinese were inferior to the barbarians (Feng 357). By this time, China had already been
humiliatingly defeated by the British in the Opium War, which showed that China lacked a strong
military and advanced technology ( Plotting East Asia s Future 352). To remedy this, he proposed
hiring Westerners to teach intelligent Chinese how to build strong ships and effective guns (Feng 357).
Without having the military force or advanced weaponry and ships, China would be crushed again and
again like it was in the Opium War and the later Sino Japanese War, which is known as another
humiliating Chinese defeat (Tignor 659). To have a powerful nation at that time, a strong military with
weapons was needed. Feng knew that in order to gain the needed military strength, the Chinese were
going to have to learn from Westerners on how to build better ships and guns.
Two other authors also proposed reforming the military. For example, Ii Naosuke, one of the Japanese
writers, had the similar idea of learning from foreigners. In his case, he wanted to employ Dutchmen
as masters and mariners and put Japanese on board to study their guns, ships, and how they navigate

Elizabethan Food Dining Essay
Elizabethan Food Dining
For the well to do, eating during the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods was a fancy affair. A king or
queen when going abroad could expect banquet tables filled with hundreds of dishes for just one meal!
There was much pageantry and entertainment. At Leicester, Queen Elizabeth I (predecessor of King
James VI I) was greeted with a pageant of welcome displayed on a temporary bridge. There were
cages of live birds bitterns, curlews, hernshaws and godwits. One pillar held great silver bowls piled
with apples, pears, cherries, walnuts and filberts. Other pillars held ears of wheat, oats and barley,
gigantic bunches of red and white grapes, great livery pots of claret and white wine, sea fish in

Let Huswife be carver, let pottage be eat, a dishful each one with a morsel of meat.
Rich Elizabethans loved hospitality and had chronic guests. In following the old custome, they
gathered in the Great Hall where the host sat at the head of the table and guests were arranged in order
of importance. Food was prepared in vast quantities and what was left over went to servants. After the
servants ate, the remaining food was given to the poor who waited outside the rich men s gates

Illusion in Madame Butterfly Essay
Illusion in M. Butterfly In David Henry Hwang s play M. Butterfly we are introduced to Rene
Gallimard who has unknowingly been sexually involved with another man for twenty years. The idea
of mistaken gender within the play causes the reader to question how could one mistake his/her lover s
gender for so long? In Rene Gallimard s search for self identity he ignorantly chooses illusion over
reality. Hwang effectively uses the opera Madame Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini as a framework to
mold the main character, Rene Gallimard. Gallimard longs to be like the hero in Madame Butterfly,
Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton, who dominates and possesses a beautiful Asian woman. Within the
drama Gallimard concedes that he is not very attractive and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

As the drama progresses so does Gallimard and Song s relationship. Upon becoming intimate Song
exclaims, No...let me...keep my clothes. [. . .] Turn off the lights (761). Song s repeated modesty
should invoke curiosity within Gallimard but he chooses to overlook her strange requests. As the
readers, we too could find nothing wrong with her modesty at this point, but during the trial, revealing
facts are exposed. Song replies to the judge I suppose he might have wondered why I was always on
my stomach (780). Now that we have the details of their sexual relationship, it is quite clear that
Gallimard chooses illusion over reality in order to maintain his new identity. Gallimard becomes as
sick as his idol Pinkerton when talks about Song s reaction to his affair It was her tears and her silence
that excited me, every time I visited Renee (769). Another example of Gallimard s choice of illusion is
his belief that Song bore his child. Song claims she is pregnant and then runs away only to come back
several months later with a child. Gallimard never sees her pregnant yet he still chooses to turn his
back on reality and looks to illusion. In the end Gallimard confesses to his choice of illusion and
wishes to remain there because the reality is to ugly to face. When Song reveals her true gender
Gallimard confesses I knew all the time somewhere that my happiness was temporary, my love a
deception. But my mind kept the knowledge at bay (783). In

Identity In The Film Moonlight
Identity is transitional. Not one identity is held constant throughout one s life. Thus, the
intersectionality of one s identity conveys how complicated humans are. This complex nature of
humans is brought to life in the movie Moonlight. Directed by Barry Jenkins, this coming of age film
explores the many facets of identity in the main character, Chiron. Chiron is not the only fully thought
character; every named character parallels people of all walks of life. Through the intricacies of the
characters, stereotypes are presented and shattered. But, the film s central point is not to counter
stereotypes. Moonlight tells a story of reality where stereotypes are rooted in truth. Consequently,
Moonlight plays into a majority of stereotypes of class, race, gender, and sexual orientation. The first
set of stereotypes that all the characters back are those associated with class. Lower class people are
often affiliated with little to no savings, renting properties, and living in the inner city. In the first
chapter of the film, i. Little, Chiron runs into an abandoned apartment that is known as a crack hole.
This gives context into where Chiron lives: the inner city, and more closely related to the ghetto.
Chiron returns home to a barred window apartment complex. He is merely a child who has no control
over his home, so this situation speaks more upon his mother, Paula. After a few days of being
introduced, she sells the television set to use for drug money. To take a bath, Chiron heats the water on
the stove and uses dish soap. It is obvious that this family is a stereotypical low class family. In the
second chapter, ii. Chiron, Paula in a similar situation, but a smaller, more run down apartment
complex. She physically and emotionally abuses Chiron for money. This aspect ties into the
intersectionality of being a low class African American. The stereotype that correlates to this issue is
the crack victim. Paula s need for money stems from a need of crack. Her addiction has run her family
into the bleak stereotypes of low class. In chapter three, iii. Black, we are invited into the home of
Chiron s friend, Kevin. Kevin is similar to Paula in how he lives in a barred apartment complex, but
he has a steady

George Hobbes And Thomas Hobbes
Corruption, false votes, unearned donated money; law breaking, lies, and hypocrisy are just some of
the few factors that can be caused by a person s human nature and therefore cause political instability.
Nicollò Machiavelli and Thomas Hobbes, two philosophers from the sixteenth and seventeenth
century respectively, each have their own definitions of human nature and why human nature is
always going to be a conflict and therefore lead to political instability. Human nature is an important
concept to study when it comes to politics because if people know that there exists evil in man, such
as being selfish, we can learn how to control it in order to create political stability. Hobbes declares
that humans are selfish and only concerned ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To become enemies is the conclusion Hobbes says, and then the men will fight and attempt to harm
one another. Hobbes addresses such times as war.
According to Hobbes, (Curley 2012, 76) Whatsoever therefore is consequent to a time of war, where
every man is enemy to every man, the same consequent to the time wherein men live without other
security than what their own strength and their own invention shall furnish them withal. In such
condition there is no place for industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain: and consequently no
culture of the earth; no navigation, nor use of the commodities that may be imported by sea; no
commodious building; no instruments of moving and removing such things as require much force; no
knowledge of the face of the earth; no account of time; no arts; no letters; no society; and which is
worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty,
brutish, and short.
On the contrary, Machiavelli believes that man should look out for himself and no one else; he
believes that men are only concerned with their own self interest anyways. Human nature is a concept
that Machiavelli really mocks in a sense in that he sets guidelines in exactly what a prince needs to be
in order to be successful. He states that the prince should be the one and only sole authority, and he
must be trustworthy and cause fear in order to have

The Responses Of Animals And Plants
Viruses are biological agents that are extremely small and highly infectious. It possesses the ability in
infecting all cell types, from complex eukaryotes such as plants and animals, to microorganisms
including archaea and bacteria. [1] However, it could only rely on infecting a host cell for viral
replication, which when infecting a host cell it incorporates its genetic materials into the host cell
DNA and uses the host s cellular component for replication, such that the cell produces viral proteins
and genetic materials for assembling new viron instead of its usual products. [2]
Upon viral infection, a series of immune responses will be provoked in the host cell, which these
responses may vary in different life forms. The aim of this essay is to explore the antiviral responses
in animals and plants; comparing the responses mechanisms that are common in both parties, as well
as investigating their relative unique responses.
Introduction Viral infection in plants and animals
Some viruses could only infect certain or several species, while others is capable of infecting many.
The range of different types of cells that a virus could infect is regarded as its host range. Plant viruses
has a narrower host range such that they only replicate in living plant cells and fails to infect animal
cells. [3] On the other hand, while some animal viruses are known to be species specific, such as
smallpox virus that could only infect humans; there are also viruses that has a board host

The Holocaust In Maus I And Maus II By Art Spiegelman
Leaving 6 million Jews murdered in its wake, the Holocaust is one of the most devastating events to
ever occur in history. This horrific work of evil is a moment never to be forgotten, especially by those
who lived through the nightmare. With hundreds of stories that have been published about the
Holocaust by survivors and their relatives, this time in history is also a learning experience for modern
day people. By reading the sorrowful and melancholy tales of Holocaust victims, the people of today
grow wiser and more knowledgeable as to prevent something so heinous from reoccurring in the
future. However, what shocks many readers is one author s decision to depict his father s Holocaust
story in the form of a comic book. The comic book format used in both Maus I and Maus II by Art
Spiegelman is a new and innovative way to present the atrocities of the Holocaust because it makes
the dark concepts of the story easier to understand and opens opportunities for not only displaying, but
inspiring new insights among readers.
Without the assistance of images, it would be easy for readers to become confused or misunderstand
certain aspects of the story. As Vladek travels through the country and comes in contact with various
people, specifically those of diverse ethnicities, Spiegelman depicts them as different animals to
represent their nationalities. For example, when Vladek is crying in the concentration camp barracks, a
priest, whom Spiegelman draws as a pig, comforts him through

Dependence of Man on the Environment

Dariush Azimi June 13, 2011 Revised June 21, 2011 When having to wonder how the environment is
fairing with all the global warming and climate changes on going in the world. There are more of the
renewable fuels to use like biofuels and biomass we have to wonder how all of this will affect the ever
changing of the environment. There are several different environmental problems of biofuels and
biomass in the world. We often wonder about the comparison of energy security by biofuels and
biomass combined together, because these items are being used for energy and the future of our
environmental issues and science. Most of the biofuels ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It seems crazy that it is how we get the crops and different things that can be turned into ethanol like
with corn is turned into gas for vehicles. With all the talk about how bioethanol can help the
environment there is also biodiesel and biomass in combination with the ethanol used for the
replacement of oil and gas companies. Some people don t think about how their actions can affect the
environment by biomass and biofuels to be replaced using energy and can also replace oil based fuels.
Biomass resources can be used to produce methanol. The pyroligneous acid obtained from wood
pyrolysis consists of about 50% methanol, acetone, phenols, and water (Demirbas and Gullu, 1998;
Gullu and Demirbas, 2001). As a renewable resource, biomass represents a potentially inexhaustible
supply of feedstock for methanol production. We need to keep making sure that we don t forget to
protect the environment. People don t realize that with bioenergy you can create biomass and biofuels
with power plants that supply electricity to the country. Many people don t realize that what they do

most newspapers. I grabbed the newspaper and began to read because of my interest in African

Gullah Or Sea Island Creole English
Background information about the African languages that contributed to Gullah.
Gullah (or Geechee or Sea Island Creole English) formed separately on the Sea Islands off the coast of
the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida throughout the 18th and 19th centuries among enslaved Western
Africans. They developed a language that combined grammatical, phonological, and lexical features
of the non standard English varieties spoken by white slaveholders and farmers in that region of the
United States along with those from numerous Western and Central African languages. According to
this view, Gullah developed separately, or distinctly, from African American English and varieties of
English spoken in the South.
Why was English first introduced?
English was first introduced in these sea islands and surrounding areas due to the large amount of
West African slaves that were taken from their home country that had many different dialects (Wolof,
Malinke, Mandinka, Bambara to name a few). Due to the difference in dialects a similar language was
needed for them communicate so English was used as it was a prevalent and accessible language
commonly spoken by slaveholders.
The Southern American English Variety.
Gullah developed from Southern American English. Which originated from a combination of
immigrants from the British Isles, who moved to the American South in the 17th and 18th centuries,
and from prior creole or post creole speech of African slaves.

The Service Sector Management Class
Interactive, collaborative conversations with customers are essential for gaining critical information
and insight about customers situations and enable salespeople to offer unique, added value solutions
for customers needs. (SELL4, Cengage Learning, 82) Communication skills, to me, is the main topic
within the Service Sector Management class. The reason I believe this is because in order to build
trust, sale, understand the buyer, etc. you must be able to talk to the customers. Trust based sales
communication is when you must talk with the customer rather than at them. It is a collaborative and
two way form of communication that allows buyers and sellers to better understand the need of
situations and working together to create the best responses for resolving the customer s needs. Trust
based communication is the sharing of importance between buying and selling individuals that result
from the interactive process of exchanging information and ideas. With this emphasis on establishing
understanding, communication is essential throughout each stage of the selling process. Effective
communication skills are needed to classify buying needs and to demonstrate to buyers how a
salesperson s planned solution can satisfy those needs better than competitors. The critical capabilities
for effective selling include questioning, listening, giving information, nonverbal communication, and
written communication skills. Although each of these skills are needed in everyday life, they

American Independent Film
There are many aspects we can cite from the film The Conversation, directed by Francis Ford
Coppola, that run parallel with the themes we find evident in other films that would be considered
American Independent films. Coppola s films work to bend the traditional rules of Hollywood
filmmaking. To begin, one aspect that American Independent films are usually void of is a very
distinct sense of closure. Often times, we find that these films don t give us the closure we need and
often times force the viewer to take an introspective view of the ending of the film. Many directors
employ methods which force the viewer to realize that the entire premise of the movie is completely
fictional and made up so that they must take aspects from their own life and connect them to the film.
In turn, this makes the film very subjective, affecting each viewer differently. ... Show more content

In the instance of The Conversation, the film is essentially just about a person who is trying to perform
their job but they are unaware of what is being done or what they are being used for. In the ending
scene of the film we can see that Coppola is working against the formation of closure, leaving us with
an ambiguous close to the film. This film also works deeply as a detective story. Traditionally, in
Coppola s films he captures the stages a person comes to know and accept himself through making
peace with their vices. In the case of The Conversation, the film is split into a time period spanning six
days, with each passing day Harry continues to his final descent into madness. It is evident that this
film captures a more personal side of Coppola, leaning away from the commerciality which can be
cited in some of his other

All these numbers are small in comparison with the deadliest creature in the world. According to

and they, therefore, avoid them like the plague. But for little sins, they do not worry much about. They

However, we must keep in mind that it is ultimately the customer s decision. We must never impede
upon the patients rights even if we may feel like it is in their best interests. As seasons change so does
people. We in the senior care industry see change often; As patients age and their conditions worsen.
Seeing so many patients go through their final stage of life we may become insensitive to the patient s
feelings. We must try to remain mindful of the sensitivity of their situation. The caregiver patient
relationship is one that requires trust. Kindness, genuine compassion and patience are the best ways to
build caregiver patient trust. We have realized that, that trust must be present for a patient to commit

providers support families as they go through periods of distress, uncertainty and change. Through the
specialized services that we in the senior care industry provide, we are able to lessen the negative
effects of these changes. Most of all, we bring understanding, comfort and fulfillment to our patients

Write An Essay About Patsy Mink
She sat at the back of the classroom, rapping the pencil against her teeth. For all her natural grace and
casual elegance, her eyes clearly burned with a fire so fierce it seemed to be growing brighter by the
minute. In short, Patsy Mink was thinking. Thoughts of Hawaiian nights filled her head, the soft
breeze and starry skies as vivid as ever, though what she was concentrating on were the voices in the
background. She had been young in this particular memory, though it was stirring enough to stick with
her. The noise was that of a political rally, with groups of people huddled together to shout and scream
for their favorite candidate. Patsy remembered thinking how important it all seemed, how involved
people had been, and such passion filled her now as a candidate for her high school s student
government. As she thought of that night more deeply, she suddenly found what she had been looking
for: an answer. Coalitions! That s how she would do it. Being a Japanese American, and a woman
nonetheless, would be a difficult obstacle to overcome as a student politician in post Pearl Harbor
America, but if she could appeal personally to specific groups, she might just be able to pull it off. ...

The Importance Of Collecting Student Loans
When it comes to debt, the most relentless creditor to have is the federal government. Student loans
that are not paid in a timely manner will be forwarded to a collection department or agency. The
government utilizes private collection agencies to collect these back loans on their behalf, and they
forward delinquent loans to these services very quickly. The problem in now dealing with a collection
agency is that your credit score will suffer if your student loan stays in delinquent status. The best
option is to be proactive and call the agency to work out a payment plan to get back on track.

People have different views about whether governments should introduce a maximum wage. While in
some ways it may seem reasonable to allow people to earn as much as companies are willing to pay, I
personally believe that employee remuneration should be capped at a certain level. There are various
reasons why it might be considered beneficial to allow people to be paid extremely high salaries. If
companies offer excellent pay packages, they can attract the most talented people in their fields to
work for them. For example, technology companies like Google are able to employ the best
programmers because of the huge sums that they are willing to pay. Furthermore, these well paid
employees are likely to be highly motivated to work hard and therefore

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Essay
Although Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz had no formal training as a mathematician, his contributions to
the field of mathematics are still evident today. His results and work laid the groundwork for more
thorough and rigorous treatments of calculus that would come later from various mathematicians. One
of his most enduring legacies is the notations he used for calculus, which are still used around the
world. Outside of mathematics Gottfried Leibniz made contributions to the fields of philosophy, law,
and politics.
Gottfried Leibniz was born to Friedrich Leibniz and Catharina Schmuck on July 1st, 1646 in Leipzig,

his third degree from the University of Leipzig. In 1666 while trying to pursue his doctorate in Law
Leibniz was forced to leave the University of Leipzig due to political differences between himself and
his fellow students and faculty members (EGS, 2010). Gottfried continued his pursuit of a Doctorate
in law at the University of Altdorf, which he received in November of 1666. Also in 1666 Gottfried
published his first book, On the Art of Combinations (EGS, 2010). In it he argued that all our ideas are
compounded from a very small number of simple ideas, which form the alphabet of human thought.
Complex ideas proceed from these simple ideas by a uniform and symmetrical combination,
analogous to arithmetical multiplication. (Rational, 2010)

customers who had to deal with the delays on the initial happening will be provided an entire free

well. What else can an airline company do, errors happen and some may be out of the company s

Analysis Of A Lesson Before Dying
I agree with the statement, At the end of A Lesson Before Dying, desolation prevails over consolation,
because the last chapters of A Lesson Before Dying had a negative and depressing tone. According to
Sidney deRogers, He didn t pay any close attention to the black truck with the gray tarpaulin cover,
but he would tell the people at the Rainbow Club that he did feel a cold chill when the truck went by.
Basically, Sidney is saying that he felt that something was awry, or that something wrong or evil was
in that truck. The whole town knew what was happening that day and everyone had an opinion,
whether that opinion was indifferent, uneasy, or disgusted/sickened by what was going to happen on
that day. Grant says that It was a nice day. Blue sky. Not a cloud, but there was an overlying notion of
sorrow and fear that laid over everyone in the quarter. One could argue that the end of A Lesson
Before Dying prevailed with consolation rather than desolation since according to Paul, He was the
strongest man in that crowded room, Grant Wiggins. Paul s point is that Jefferson died a man as a
result of Grant. Despite what someone might say, I still consider this argument to be wrong
considering that Grant is still upset because Jefferson did not have a Jury of his peers; everyone on
that jury was white and had no concern for Jefferson s life. At the end, it seems to me that Grant feels
alone since he has spent much of the past six months with Jefferson. He developed a strong

Probation Vs Parole
Before discussing the differences between probation and parole, it is helpful to have an understanding
of their definitions. After learning the definitions, we can discuss the difference between the two legal
definitions. So, what is probation? And, what is parole? What is probation? Probation refers to
conditions when a criminal serves a sentence in the community and must adhere to specific
conditions. Probation is a form of criminal sentence without actually serving time. This sentence is
usually given to first time offenders and for nonviolent crimes. When a criminal receives probation,
instead of pronouncing the sentence and sending them straight to prison or jail, the judge gives them
an opportunity to show that he or she wants to rehabilitate himself or herself. As long as a criminal
abides by the terms of probation, the defendant remains free. Being on probation means one has to

For example, one of the amazing characteristics of holograms is that every part of a hologram is a
smaller version of the whole. Or put another way, if you cut a holographic waveform printed image
into four pieces and point the laser at each one you will not see four quarter segments of the
holographic image. You will see four quarter sized versions of the whole hologram. Every part of a
hologram is a smaller version of the whole.
So maybe our body is just a hologram therefore every part of the body is a smaller version of the
whole. This explains why reflexology, acupuncture and other forms of alternative healing can find
areas in different parts of the body, hand, ear, foot, or suchlike, that affect different organs and the

Chaos Theory Essay
Missing Figures
CHAOS
The word chaos, an enigmatic part of the vernacular, means a state without order, or the opposite of
cosmos, an ordered state. Mathematical chaos is instability and unpredictability, often seen in nature
due to its sensitivity to the random disturbances that commonly occur. This is known as determinism;
previous events heavily influence future events, and small changes eventually lead to larger variations.
Philosophically, chaos theory implies that everything is connected; our past actions impact our future.
Though chaotic evolution is irregular, there are rules behind its apparent disorder that are used to
study it. Studying chaos may enrich our lives and help us understand more of our world.

One night, he ran a weather sequence a second time halfway through the regular process in order to
save time. When he came back to look at the computer s output, he saw that the second run had
diverged partway through and looked completely different (Figure 1), simply because he had inputted
a value to three decimal places instead of six.
Fig 1: Lorenz s two weather runs.
According to the present scientific convention, such a small change of one part in a thousand in initial
values should have been inconsequential. Lorenz called this vast change the butterfly effect. He stated
that an event so small as the flap of a butterfly s wings could completely alter a system such as the
atmosphere. Over a long enough period of time, a much larger event would be affected immense storm
that would have happened not happening, or vice versa. However, Lorenz published his paper
discussing this phenomenon in a meteorology journal, and consequently, chaos theory was not
immediately recognized as a new branch of mathematics.
Chaos has an underlying order to it. As Poincaré demonstrated, sometimes simple mathematical
equations result in much more chaotic outcomes. Disorder can often be found in the behavior of
difference equations, which model a quantity at some time. In this iterative process, which is truly
deterministic, the value of the term xn+1 is dependent on the value of xn. For example, if we have the
simple difference equation 3

Reflection Paper On Terrorism
Reflection Paper on Terrorism
It is ironic that the U.S. and Saudi Arabia continue to sign historic agreements meant to confront
current and emerging threats coming from terrorist financing the latter is one of the biggest state
sponsors of terrorism. The creative responses that they create continue to formalize cooperation
between them to counter terrorist financing. However, this is a lose lose partnership since donors in
Saudi Arabia continue to fund Sunni terrorist groups across the world. The U.S. has to understand that
the state s passivity toward terrorist groups is critical to their success as any form of deliberate
assistance they access. The U.S. cannot proclaim to be the world leader in fighting terrorism yet the
government continues to be the ultimate state sponsor of those who fund terrorism (Casaca Wolf,
2017). According to Chossudovsky (2013), groups such as the House of Saud have been supported by
the U.S. government in the past in full knowledge that the Saudi monarchy funds Al Qaeda. The U.S.
government should be viewed as a State sponsor of Terrorism given its reluctance to evaluate its
relationship with Saudi Arabia.
Earlier in 2017, President Trump gave an executive order to ban entry from a number of Middle

The Use Of Deere s Rqd For Estimating On Situ Deformation...
In the 1960 s several attempts were made to use Deere s RQD for estimating in situ deformation

been derived for simple joint geometries derived a mathematical procedure to calculate the
deformation modulus of an equivalent continuum for a randomly jointed rock mass. However, these
simple expressions are inadequate as they assume the discontinuities are dispersed in a regular manner
that is not realistic for practical purposes.
The deformation of the rock mass can be quantified by using the following equations evaluated by

values of the UCS tests per estimated strength class are lower than the averages of the estimated
values. A quite good correlation is found for the averages per unit (Fig. 6(c)).
The standard deviation of the UCS values per unit is for most units considerably higher than the

A conditioned emotional response is seen in classical conditioning after a conditioned stimulus has
been paired with an emotion producing unconditioned stimulus. In other words it is an emotional
response that has been classically conditioned to occur to learned stimuli. Watson and Rayner created
this for the first time with little Albert when he was about eight months and twenty six days. They

began to cry. The next time they tested a conditioned emotional response was when little Albert was at

  • 2. The Most Convincing Approach Of Japan And China Tyler Olsen Dr. Kishida HIST 110 02 21 October 2015 The Most Convincing Approach For many years Western nations in Europe and North America had wanted to expand their trade with Japan and China; however, the people of the two Asian countries believed that the Westerners were barbarians with useless goods and religious beliefs that would challenge their traditions. Up until the 1800s, Japan and China had successfully restricted the influence of Western nations within their countries. Their ability to remain isolated from Westerners, however, quickly faded throughout the 1800s when the modernized Western nations grew more powerful and demanding. Due to trying to stay isolated from Western ideas and religious beliefs, Japan and China fell ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Feng Guifen s first good idea in his plan was to learn how to build better ships and guns from the Westerners, or barbarians as he liked to call them. He realized that China was turning into a weak country from being isolated from Western ideas. In the beginning of his article, Feng said that the Chinese were inferior to the barbarians (Feng 357). By this time, China had already been humiliatingly defeated by the British in the Opium War, which showed that China lacked a strong military and advanced technology ( Plotting East Asia s Future 352). To remedy this, he proposed hiring Westerners to teach intelligent Chinese how to build strong ships and effective guns (Feng 357). Without having the military force or advanced weaponry and ships, China would be crushed again and again like it was in the Opium War and the later Sino Japanese War, which is known as another humiliating Chinese defeat (Tignor 659). To have a powerful nation at that time, a strong military with weapons was needed. Feng knew that in order to gain the needed military strength, the Chinese were going to have to learn from Westerners on how to build better ships and guns. Two other authors also proposed reforming the military. For example, Ii Naosuke, one of the Japanese writers, had the similar idea of learning from foreigners. In his case, he wanted to employ Dutchmen as masters and mariners and put Japanese on board to study their guns, ships, and how they navigate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Elizabethan Food Dining Essay Elizabethan Food Dining For the well to do, eating during the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods was a fancy affair. A king or queen when going abroad could expect banquet tables filled with hundreds of dishes for just one meal! There was much pageantry and entertainment. At Leicester, Queen Elizabeth I (predecessor of King James VI I) was greeted with a pageant of welcome displayed on a temporary bridge. There were cages of live birds bitterns, curlews, hernshaws and godwits. One pillar held great silver bowls piled with apples, pears, cherries, walnuts and filberts. • 4. Illusion in Madame Butterfly Essay Illusion in M. Butterfly In David Henry Hwang s play M. Butterfly we are introduced to Rene Gallimard who has unknowingly been sexually involved with another man for twenty years. The idea of mistaken gender within the play causes the reader to question how could one mistake his/her lover s gender for so long? In Rene Gallimard s search for self identity he ignorantly chooses illusion over reality. Hwang effectively uses the opera Madame Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini as a framework to mold the main character, Rene Gallimard. Gallimard longs to be like the hero in Madame Butterfly, Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton, who dominates and possesses a beautiful Asian woman. Within the drama Gallimard concedes that he is not very attractive and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the drama progresses so does Gallimard and Song s relationship. Upon becoming intimate Song exclaims, No...let me...keep my clothes. [. . .] Turn off the lights (761). Song s repeated modesty should invoke curiosity within Gallimard but he chooses to overlook her strange requests. As the readers, we too could find nothing wrong with her modesty at this point, but during the trial, revealing facts are exposed. Song replies to the judge I suppose he might have wondered why I was always on my stomach (780). Now that we have the details of their sexual relationship, it is quite clear that Gallimard chooses illusion over reality in order to maintain his new identity. Gallimard becomes as sick as his idol Pinkerton when talks about Song s reaction to his affair It was her tears and her silence that excited me, every time I visited Renee (769). Another example of Gallimard s choice of illusion is his belief that Song bore his child. Song claims she is pregnant and then runs away only to come back several months later with a child. Gallimard never sees her pregnant yet he still chooses to turn his back on reality and looks to illusion. In the end Gallimard confesses to his choice of illusion and wishes to remain there because the reality is to ugly to face. When Song reveals her true gender Gallimard confesses I knew all the time somewhere that my happiness was temporary, my love a deception. But my mind kept the knowledge at bay (783). In ... • 5. Identity In The Film Moonlight Identity is transitional. Not one identity is held constant throughout one s life. Thus, the intersectionality of one s identity conveys how complicated humans are. This complex nature of humans is brought to life in the movie Moonlight. Directed by Barry Jenkins, this coming of age film explores the many facets of identity in the main character, Chiron. Chiron is not the only fully thought character; every named character parallels people of all walks of life. Through the intricacies of the characters, stereotypes are presented and shattered. But, the film s central point is not to counter stereotypes. Moonlight tells a story of reality where stereotypes are rooted in truth. Consequently, Moonlight plays into a majority of stereotypes of class, race, gender, and sexual orientation. The first set of stereotypes that all the characters back are those associated with class. Lower class people are often affiliated with little to no savings, renting properties, and living in the inner city. In the first chapter of the film, i. Little, Chiron runs into an abandoned apartment that is known as a crack hole. This gives context into where Chiron lives: the inner city, and more closely related to the ghetto. Chiron returns home to a barred window apartment complex. He is merely a child who has no control over his home, so this situation speaks more upon his mother, Paula. After a few days of being introduced, she sells the television set to use for drug money. To take a bath, Chiron heats the water on the stove and uses dish soap. It is obvious that this family is a stereotypical low class family. In the second chapter, ii. Chiron, Paula in a similar situation, but a smaller, more run down apartment complex. She physically and emotionally abuses Chiron for money. This aspect ties into the intersectionality of being a low class African American. The stereotype that correlates to this issue is the crack victim. Paula s need for money stems from a need of crack. Her addiction has run her family into the bleak stereotypes of low class. In chapter three, iii. Black, we are invited into the home of Chiron s friend, Kevin. Kevin is similar to Paula in how he lives in a barred apartment complex, but he has a steady ... George Hobbes And Thomas Hobbes Corruption, false votes, unearned donated money; law breaking, lies, and hypocrisy are just some of the few factors that can be caused by a person s human nature and therefore cause political instability. Nicollò Machiavelli and Thomas Hobbes, two philosophers from the sixteenth and seventeenth century respectively, each have their own definitions of human nature and why human nature is always going to be a conflict and therefore lead to political instability. Human nature is an important concept to study when it comes to politics because if people know that there exists evil in man, such as being selfish, we can learn how to control it in order to create political stability. Hobbes declares that humans are selfish and only concerned ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To become enemies is the conclusion Hobbes says, and then the men will fight and attempt to harm one another. Hobbes addresses such times as war. According to Hobbes, (Curley 2012, 76) Whatsoever therefore is consequent to a time of war, where every man is enemy to every man, the same consequent to the time wherein men live without other security than what their own strength and their own invention shall furnish them withal. In such condition there is no place for industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain: and consequently no culture of the earth; no navigation, nor use of the commodities that may be imported by sea; no commodious building; no instruments of moving and removing such things as require much force; no knowledge of the face of the earth; no account of time; no arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. On the contrary, Machiavelli believes that man should look out for himself and no one else; he believes that men are only concerned with their own self interest anyways. Human nature is a concept that Machiavelli really mocks in a sense in that he sets guidelines in exactly what a prince needs to be in order to be successful. He states that the prince should be the one and only sole authority, and he must be trustworthy and cause fear in order to have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

[1] However, it could only rely on infecting a host cell for viral replication, which when infecting a host cell it incorporates its genetic materials into the host cell DNA and uses the host s cellular component for replication, such that the cell produces viral proteins and genetic materials for assembling new viron instead of its usual products. [2] Upon viral infection, a series of immune responses will be provoked in the host cell, which these responses may vary in different life forms. The aim of this essay is to explore the antiviral responses in animals and plants; comparing the responses mechanisms that are common in both parties, as well as investigating their relative unique responses. Introduction Viral infection in plants and animals Some viruses could only infect certain or several species, while others is capable of infecting many. The range of different types of cells that a virus could infect is regarded as its host range. Plant viruses has a narrower host range such that they only replicate in living plant cells and fails to infect animal cells. [3] On the other hand, while some animal viruses are known to be species specific, such as smallpox virus that could only infect humans; there are also viruses that has a board host ... • 8. The Holocaust In Maus I And Maus II By Art Spiegelman Leaving 6 million Jews murdered in its wake, the Holocaust is one of the most devastating events to ever occur in history. This horrific work of evil is a moment never to be forgotten, especially by those who lived through the nightmare. With hundreds of stories that have been published about the Holocaust by survivors and their relatives, this time in history is also a learning experience for modern day people. By reading the sorrowful and melancholy tales of Holocaust victims, the people of today grow wiser and more knowledgeable as to prevent something so heinous from reoccurring in the future. However, what shocks many readers is one author s decision to depict his father s Holocaust story in the form of a comic book. The comic book format used in both Maus I and Maus II by Art Spiegelman is a new and innovative way to present the atrocities of the Holocaust because it makes the dark concepts of the story easier to understand and opens opportunities for not only displaying, but inspiring new insights among readers. Without the assistance of images, it would be easy for readers to become confused or misunderstand certain aspects of the story. As Vladek travels through the country and comes in contact with various people, specifically those of diverse ethnicities, Spiegelman depicts them as different animals to represent their nationalities. For example, when Vladek is crying in the concentration camp barracks, a priest, whom Spiegelman draws as a pig, comforts him through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Gullah Or Sea Island Creole English Background information about the African languages that contributed to Gullah. Gullah (or Geechee or Sea Island Creole English) formed separately on the Sea Islands off the coast of the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida throughout the 18th and 19th centuries among enslaved Western Africans. They developed a language that combined grammatical, phonological, and lexical features of the non standard English varieties spoken by white slaveholders and farmers in that region of the United States along with those from numerous Western and Central African languages. According to this view, Gullah developed separately, or distinctly, from African American English and varieties of English spoken in the South. Why was English first introduced? English was first introduced in these sea islands and surrounding areas due to the large amount of West African slaves that were taken from their home country that had many different dialects (Wolof, Malinke, Mandinka, Bambara to name a few). Due to the difference in dialects a similar language was needed for them communicate so English was used as it was a prevalent and accessible language commonly spoken by slaveholders. The Southern American English Variety. Gullah developed from Southern American English. • 12. The Service Sector Management Class Interactive, collaborative conversations with customers are essential for gaining critical information and insight about customers situations and enable salespeople to offer unique, added value solutions for customers needs. (SELL4, Cengage Learning, 82) Communication skills, to me, is the main topic within the Service Sector Management class. The reason I believe this is because in order to build trust, sale, understand the buyer, etc. you must be able to talk to the customers. Trust based sales communication is when you must talk with the customer rather than at them. It is a collaborative and two way form of communication that allows buyers and sellers to better understand the need of situations and working together to create the best responses for resolving the customer s needs. Trust based communication is the sharing of importance between buying and selling individuals that result from the interactive process of exchanging information and ideas. With this emphasis on establishing understanding, communication is essential throughout each stage of the selling process. Effective communication skills are needed to classify buying needs and to demonstrate to buyers how a salesperson s planned solution can satisfy those needs better than competitors. The critical capabilities for effective selling include questioning, listening, giving information, nonverbal communication, and written communication skills. • 13. American Independent Film There are many aspects we can cite from the film The Conversation, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, that run parallel with the themes we find evident in other films that would be considered American Independent films. Coppola s films work to bend the traditional rules of Hollywood filmmaking. To begin, one aspect that American Independent films are usually void of is a very distinct sense of closure. Often times, we find that these films don t give us the closure we need and often times force the viewer to take an introspective view of the ending of the film. Many directors employ methods which force the viewer to realize that the entire premise of the movie is completely fictional and made up so that they must take aspects from their own life and connect them to the film. In turn, this makes the film very subjective, affecting each viewer differently. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Traditionally, in Coppola s films he captures the stages a person comes to know and accept himself through making peace with their vices. In the case of The Conversation, the film is split into a time period spanning six days, with each passing day Harry continues to his final descent into madness. On September 11 2001, Lauren Manning s life was changed forever. Though previously she had learned the importance of perseverance and faith, on that day, she finally knew what it meant and how truly important it was. On this tragic day, Lauren prayed to die because of the insane amount of pain she was experiencing, but chose to fight for the sake of her beloved husband and son instead. Even though Manning had not died, more than 80% of her body was burned and she now faced the challenge of embracing her altered life. Throughout her struggles, Lauren clung to her inner strength and faith to pass this test of human endurance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lauren was extremely lucky and she realized how lucky she was to have such amazing guardians who gave her endless hope and support. Who knows if she could have made it without her loved ones. Looking back at her injury, Lauren notes, My guardians my husband, my parents, and my doctors and nurses helped to prevent death from stealing me, but only by the narrowest margin (Manning 91). Also, in a recent New York Times article, Elizabeth Pope says, Loneliness is a risk factor for functional decline and early death in adults over age 60, according to a University of California, San Francisco study published in July. More than 43 percent of the 1,604 participants reported that they often felt left out or isolated or lacked companionship. These are two examples that highlight how companionship is essential for one to survive. When one is going through difficult times such as injuries or illnesses, they need a friend or family member to be there with them. These reasons are not black and white, and have a multitude of contributing factors, cause and effect, and influences. The causation of the modern slave trade is outlined in chapters three, four, and five of the text: Human Trafficking: Interdisciplinary Perspectives, written by Mary C. Burke. Chapter three, titled, Sociological Perspective: Underlying Causes relates sociology to the concept of human trafficking to better understand the culture behind the slave trade, including political and economic characteristics. • 33. Probation Vs Parole Before discussing the differences between probation and parole, it is helpful to have an understanding of their definitions. After learning the definitions, we can discuss the difference between the two legal definitions. So, what is probation? And, what is parole? What is probation? Probation refers to conditions when a criminal serves a sentence in the community and must adhere to specific conditions. Probation is a form of criminal sentence without actually serving time. This sentence is usually given to first time offenders and for nonviolent crimes. When a criminal receives probation, instead of pronouncing the sentence and sending them straight to prison or jail, the judge gives them an opportunity to show that he or she wants to rehabilitate himself or herself. As long as a criminal abides by the terms of probation, the defendant remains free. Being on probation means one has to report to a probation officer, refrain from using drugs and alcohol, maintain a job, and cannot commit any crimes while on probation. A defendant might have to ... Or put another way, if you cut a holographic waveform printed image into four pieces and point the laser at each one you will not see four quarter segments of the holographic image. You will see four quarter sized versions of the whole hologram. Every part of a hologram is a smaller version of the whole. So maybe our body is just a hologram therefore every part of the body is a smaller version of the whole. This explains why reflexology, acupuncture and other forms of alternative healing can find areas in different parts of the body, hand, ear, foot, or suchlike, that affect different organs and the processes of the whole body. We are living in a giant hologram, and everything we see around us is merely a projection of a two dimensional surface. • 35. Chaos Theory Essay Missing Figures CHAOS The word chaos, an enigmatic part of the vernacular, means a state without order, or the opposite of cosmos, an ordered state. Mathematical chaos is instability and unpredictability, often seen in nature due to its sensitivity to the random disturbances that commonly occur. This is known as determinism; previous events heavily influence future events, and small changes eventually lead to larger variations. Philosophically, chaos theory implies that everything is connected; our past actions impact our future. Though chaotic evolution is irregular, there are rules behind its apparent disorder that are used to study it. Studying chaos may enrich our lives and help us understand more of our world. Though chaos ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One night, he ran a weather sequence a second time halfway through the regular process in order to save time. When he came back to look at the computer s output, he saw that the second run had diverged partway through and looked completely different (Figure 1), simply because he had inputted a value to three decimal places instead of six. Fig 1: Lorenz s two weather runs. According to the present scientific convention, such a small change of one part in a thousand in initial values should have been inconsequential. Lorenz called this vast change the butterfly effect. He stated that an event so small as the flap of a butterfly s wings could completely alter a system such as the atmosphere. Over a long enough period of time, a much larger event would be affected immense storm that would have happened not happening, or vice versa. However, Lorenz published his paper discussing this phenomenon in a meteorology journal, and consequently, chaos theory was not immediately recognized as a new branch of mathematics. Chaos has an underlying order to it. As Poincaré demonstrated, sometimes simple mathematical equations result in much more chaotic outcomes. Disorder can often be found in the behavior of difference equations, which model a quantity at some time. In this iterative process, which is truly deterministic, the value of the term xn+1 is dependent on the value of xn. For example, if we have the simple difference equation 3 , or ... • 37. Reflection Paper On Terrorism Reflection Paper on Terrorism It is ironic that the U.S. and Saudi Arabia continue to sign historic agreements meant to confront current and emerging threats coming from terrorist financing the latter is one of the biggest state sponsors of terrorism. The creative responses that they create continue to formalize cooperation between them to counter terrorist financing. However, this is a lose lose partnership since donors in Saudi Arabia continue to fund Sunni terrorist groups across the world. The U.S. has to understand that the state s passivity toward terrorist groups is critical to their success as any form of deliberate assistance they access. The U.S. cannot proclaim to be the world leader in fighting terrorism yet the government continues to be the ultimate state sponsor of those who fund terrorism (Casaca Wolf, 2017). According to Chossudovsky (2013), groups such as the House of Saud have been supported by the U.S. government in the past in full knowledge that the Saudi monarchy funds Al Qaeda. The U.S. government should be viewed as a State sponsor of Terrorism given its reluctance to evaluate its relationship with Saudi Arabia. Earlier in 2017, President Trump gave an executive order to ban entry from a number of Middle Eastern nations in order to protect the Americans from terrorism by foreign nationals who come to the U.S. But one of the most outstanding aspects of the list is that Saudi Arabia was conspicuously missing. In the 1960 s several attempts were made to use Deere s RQD for estimating in situ deformation modulus, but this approach is seldom used today (Deere 1988). Some theoretical expressions have been derived for simple joint geometries derived a mathematical procedure to calculate the deformation modulus of an equivalent continuum for a randomly jointed rock mass. However, these simple expressions are inadequate as they assume the discontinuities are dispersed in a regular manner that is not realistic for practical purposes. The deformation of the rock mass can be quantified by using the following equations evaluated by Deere and Miller (1966) as indicated in the table below. In Fig. 6(c) the averages of estimated and UCS values are shown per unit. In Fig. 4.1 no differentiation is made for the direction of the measurements. Fig. 6(a) shows that the scatter is wide and consequently only low or no correlation can be seen. In Fig. 6(b) is clearly visible that the differences between UCS and estimated values do not show a normal distribution for lower strength values. The distribution is skewed to higher values, e.g. the UCS values are higher than the estimated values. For high strength values the distribution of the differences is more normal but the average values of the UCS tests per estimated strength class are lower than the averages of the estimated values. A quite good correlation is found for the averages per unit (Fig. 6(c)).
