Langston Hughes Identity
Search for Identity in the Poetry of Langston Hughes In exploring the problem of identity in Black
literature we find no simple or definite explanation. Nevertheless, it is generally accepted that it is
rooted in the reality of the discriminatory social system in America with its historic origins in the
institution of slavery. One can discern that this slavery system imposes a double burden on the Negro
through severe social and economic inequalities and through the heavy psychological consequences
suffered by the Negro who is forced to play an inferior role, 1 the latter relates to the low self estimate,
feeling of helplessness and basic identity conflict. Thus, in some form or the other, every Negro
American is confronted with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His own life influenced his art. Being born in a Negro family and at a time of racial discrimination
from his early childhood, he had to bear the ruthless behaviour of the whites. So, from the very
beginning of his life he faced many problems viz., racial discrimination, lack of identity in the society
and no actual or practical freedom of blacks etc. All this put a remarkable impact on his mind, on his
soul and made him a poet of blacks. A great votary of black art, Hughes inaugurated a distinct
movement of negritude which may be regarded as the soul of Harlem. Rising from his consciousness
of the colour of his skin and passing through various stages of identification with people and territory
of Africa and finally grounding it in the American Past, negritude in the poetry of Hughes evolves into
a definite and enduring concept expressive of definite vision.6 But he doesn t suffer from what W.E.B.
DuBois terms as double consciousness two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two
warring ideals in one dark body. 7 Langston Hughes in his essay on The Negro Artist and

Themes In Snowpiercer
Bong Joon ho s 2013 science fiction film, Snowpiercer, based in a graphic novel of the same name,
offers a look into a frozen future where the last of mankind lives on an evermoving locomotive. It s a
contemporary film focused around the theme of classism in society, driven by metaphors for where we
are and where we are going. With an almost mashup of Orwell meeting the 99%, the story focuses on
the inhabitants of the suppressed population of the train s tail section, led by Chris Evans Curtis,
revolting against the forward living. The film s narrative in relation to its theme is the focal point of
the film and it s main driving force. By using a linear narrative, Joon ho allows the story to move
forward as the characters move towards the front of train. With each decision Curtis makes, the
blocking of his movements is always in a forward motion. He is always looking forward because he
has a definite purpose and only second guesses in a scene (the only scene) where he looks forward and
backward toward two separate outcomes of one decision as the camera follows his head movement in

I hadn t seen Chris Evans outside of his Marvel ventures and was impressed by his ability to make his
heavily flawed character seem charismatic. It s easy to see why the tail sectioners choose to follow
him; he is the the one they deem smart and driven enough to lead them to their journey s end. I can t
tell if it s the way he meant the character to be portrayed and that s just Evan s natural charismatic
nature showing through but it adds a layer to the character that makes his decisions and emotions seem
more concrete. The rest of the cast does a great job of carrying out action beats in relation to the
workings of the class and machinery present in the film s screenplay. I do feel that some other
characters expositions are not layered enough to evoke any emotion and that does take away from the
film s

Women And Women In Giovanni Boccaccio And Francesco Barbaro
Giovanni Boccaccio and Francesco Barbaro provides for not only the men, but women in Italian
society their conventional opinion on the perfect example of how a wife should act and behave in
order to keep the domestic life at peace and whole. Through their story and most gracious outlook on a
woman s life, we can see what a marriage was life during this time. Based upon reading Boccaccio s
Decameron X, the story of the Count of Panago, Gualtieri and his peasant born wife, Griselda, as well
as Barbaro s On Wifely Duties, one may conclude that Barbaro would have considered Griselda a
good wife. In the story, Griselda endured the severe and unheard of trials that Gualtieri imposed upon
her and remained not only tearless but a happy face. From the presuming murder of their own children
to telling Griselda she will no longer be his wife, and be sent back to her poor, little house from where
she came, Griselda concealed her misery and unhappiness, with silence and no tears. Many ways in
her behavior indicates Griselda was the perfect wife during the Renaissance, according to Barbaro;
firstly, her obedience. Barbaro wrote that obedience to the husband was the most important component
in a marriage. In order that a wife does her duty and brings peace and harmony to her household, she
must agree to the first principle that she does not disagree with her husband on any point. Barbaro
implies stealthily that if a wife does not do her duty in agreeing and obeying her husband, she

Prince Edward Island Of Canada
Prince Edward Island is a five thousand, six hundred and sixty square kilometre island off the eastern
coast of Canada. When an island is part of a larger nation, and not provided with a physical connection
to the mainland, it is a dismembered limb from the functioning body of the country. The insularity is a
handicap, rather than a factor of uniqueness. Transportation from the island to the mainland has
typically been somewhat of an issue, as the Northumberland strait between the landmasses freezes
partially in winter, making travel difficult. The first peoples of the island, the Mi kmaq, would make
the crossing via canoe and carry the boat over the patches of ice. Once settlers inhabited the island it
became necessary to have constant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1775, the British Governor Walter Patterson persuaded the islanders to carry the mail to Nova
Scotia in the same way. These voyages became important to the colonies, since they proved that the
island was not isolated from the outside world for months each year. In the first few decades of the
nineteenth century, trips became a regular service with a captain and crew once per week. Although
regular, these trips remained dangerous and a major inconvenience. A canoe was replaced by an
iceboat with a captain and three crew. The sick and injured, as well as the women and children, would
be carried across the ice in the boat, but would have to pay twice as much. The trip from Cape
Traverse on PEI to the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick took at least a day, and passengers ran the
risk of catching frostbite and hypothermia. In a rare case a boat was stranded overnight during a
winter storm and a man was killed by extreme hypothermia. As time went by, safety procedures were
introduced. Boats were to be sent out in groups of three, and were required to carry compasses, axes,
food, and fire making materials. Because of these dangerous, uncomfortable, and awfully expensive
journeys, Prince Edward Island made government funded transportation a necessary requirement for
the island joining confederation.

The Album Ep By Jeff Buckley
Grace, the only album released by artist Jeff Buckley, due to his untimely death, contained a number
of his original songs as well as some covers. This album released in 1994, sold only modestly but was
warmly received by critics (Simon and Schuster, 2001), and gained Buckley immense respect as an
artist. His song Lover, you should ve come over was evidence that Buckley was a talented artist who
was not only an excellent performer but an excellent songwriter who could craft melodies and words
as well. Lover is essentially a soul ballad (Beviglia, 2014), with moments of intensity and moments of
release as well. Through analyzing this song one may begin to explore the song s virtual experience
also known as the story, or narrative of a musical work that is influenced by the artist perspective
(Sellnow, 2007), as well as the virtual time, and understand the overall message and congruency or
incongruences of the song. Lover by Jeff Buckley is a song with an interesting message due to its
hopeful lyrics and soulful tone and instrumentation, which create a congruent depiction of the
message. Jeff Buckley s song Lover You Should ve Come Over expresses a storyline through its
virtual experience of a protagonist beating all odds and seeking a resolution. Through the
incorporation of dramatic illusion and comic rhythm, this song additionally creates a virtual story with
feelings of suspense. Virtual experience is categorized into rhythm and illusion with

Compare And Contrast Abraham Lincoln And Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln and Julius Caeser were both politicians they are both similar in their own way
although they both come from different walks of life they both share similarities. Abraham Lincoln
served as the 16th president of the United States he was born in Hodgenville, KY in 1809 and he was
assassinated in April of 1865 Abraham Lincoln stood for rights of all people even though these two
men are quite different they stood for leadership and justice and equality. Julius Caeser was born on
July 13 100 B.C.E. he was a politician, and military leader Abraham Lincoln and Julius Caeser were
both rulers of their country they both had made a significant impact people admired them, they were
acknowledged as heroes of their countries. And shortly after they were both assassinated Abraham
Lincoln, and Julius Caeser left a legacy in which would carry on forever.
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States of America he was frequently referred to
as the The great emancipator and yet although he didn t publicly call for the emancipation of the entire
life. Lincoln established his public career by declaring that he was antislavery against slavery s
increasing but not for announcing immediate emancipation. However, the man who began as
antislavery eventually announced the emancipation proclamation in which freed all slaves in states
that were in rebellion. Abraham Lincoln actively supported the 13th amendment in which abolished

Social Order In Lord Of The Flies
Being born and raised in a society filled will social norms and customs, molds a sane and civil
individual. But what happens when one is thrown into a completely new environment with no sense of
order? All sanity is lost. One becomes barbaric and the main motive is survival. This is exemplified in
the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding in which a group of young boys become stranded on
an unoccupied island and is faced with the challenge of working together in order to survive.
However, the lack of social order within the environment brings out the evils within the boys resulting
in savagery and a complete loss of rationality. Boom. The sound of a plane carrying English
schoolboys crashes down onto an uninhabited island and bursts ... Show more content on

To celebrate their successful hunt, they hold a feast and invite the members from Ralph s group to join
them. At the feast, the boys are enjoying themselves. Meanwhile, Simon slips away into the forest and
runs into the pig s head on a stick which was an offering made by Jack to the beast. Simon discovers
that the beast was actually a man with a dispatched parachute. As he hurries to the feast to inform the
others about the beast s real identity, he is killed by the boys after being mistaken for the beast. Acting
like animals, the boys do not take the time to identify Simon and start attacking him claiming that he
is the beast. Simon was torn apart and killed brutally. The next day, the boys return to their own camps
on the island and reevaluate the events that occurred the previous day. Each of them had played a role
in their companion s death and there was no denying it. However, the two group of boys deal with
things their own way. Jack and two of his hunters raid Ralph s camp and steal Piggy s spectacles, the
only thing on the island that would create fire. When Ralph s band of boys head over to Jack s camp,
they are confronted by the hunters and the leaders of the two gangs fight. During the argument, Piggy
gets knocked off the mountain by a boulder and falls to his death, and Sam and Eric get captured.
Ralph escapes into the forest, fearing for his life. The boys are losing their sanity. Fighting for
complete power on the island, they are becoming belligerent towards each other. They are killing,
hunting, and looting from their companions with their rage and nobody really cares. The island is
becoming a dog eat dog warzone and the boys have completely lost their

Psychological Processes that May Be Involved in Obedience...
Psychological Processes that May Be Involved in Obedience to Authority Obedience is the following
of someone else s instructions or orders to do something. The instructions are usually from someone
who has authority such as a parent or teacher. Milgram proposed the agentic state theory; this is where
we act as an agent of someone who has authority, it means that we find it easy to deny personal
responsibility for our actions because we have just been following orders or doing our job. In 1950
Adorno expressed his beliefs that personality was a better explanation of obedience. Adorno believed
that some people have an Authoritarian Personality , this means that they are likely to be obedient yet

c) Briefly outline some of the procedures used in social influence research (theories and/or studies)
and evaluate whether these processes are ethical. Social influence has been investigated by a large
number of psychologists such as Asch, Zimbardo and Milgram. There have been many issues raised
by other psychologists as to whether the procedures that they used were ethically questionable. This
means that the research wasn t carried out in an ethical way and so they have caused themselves much
criticism. In 1951 Solomon Asch tried to find out if people would conform in highly unambiguous
situations. Asch did this by setting up a circumstance where seven people all sat looking at a display.
In turn they had to say out loud which one of three lines was the same length as line X . All but one of
the participants was a confederate of the experimenter, and on some vital trials the confederates were
asked to unanimously give the same wrong answer. The one genuine participant was the last to offer
their opinion on each trial. The performance of participants exposed to such group pressure was
compared to their performance in a control condition in which there were no confederates. Despite
Asch s findings he was criticised for the way that he carried out his experiment, Asch undertook this
study in 1950 s America, this was a time when conformity was high and doing your

Using Conditional Copula to Estimate Value Risk
Review: Using Conditional Copula to Estimate Value at Risk
ActSc 991 Project
Changwu (Allen) Chen April 14, 2014
1
1 Introduction
Value at Risk (VaR) plays a central role in risk management. By definition, VaR is the maximum
expected loss of a portfolio over a given time horizon with a certain confidence level. VaR can be seen
as a quantile on the lower tail of the distribution of portfolio returns. Although VaR is a simple
measure, it is not easily estimated.
There are several approaches for the estimation of VaR, such as historical simulations, the variance
covariance, and the Monte Carlo approaches. The first approach does not assume any underlying
distribution, whereas the last two approaches demand the joint distribution to be known, which
frequently assumed to be normal distribution. However, the deviation from normality could lead to an
inadequate VaR estimate. In this case, the portfolio could be either riskier than desired or
unnecessarily conservative.
The theory of copula is a powerful tool in modelling multivariate distributions be cause it does not
require the assumption of joint normality and it is a marginal free model. Copula have been broadly
used in the statistical literature. And due to its simplicity and convenience, one may be interested in its
application in the financial area.

Assess The Difference Between Post-Humanism And...
In my theme, there is including the concept of Post humanism and Trans humanism. There are some
difference between Post humanism and Trans humanism. Post human is the specie that no longer as a
human being which means it is beyond human such as alien. Nick Bostrum mention that Post human
would no longer be a human being, having been so significantly altered as to no longer represent the
human species. (Roden, 2015, p. 9) Underlying this worldview is a core belief that the human species
in its current form does not represent the end of our development, but rather its beginning. (Roden,
2015, p. 10). On the other word, it mean the humanism would come to an end and the new specie will
replace human and dominate the world. I may cause by the evolution ... Show more content on

We can see that, human will evolve according to their environment. However, under the big change of
the environment and the criminal affect, human body may have a great change due to the gene
mutation. Trans human is to strengthen or enhance their mental and physical by a scientific way. Nick
Bostrum defined trans humanism as the intellectual and cultural movement that affirms the possibility
and desirability of fundamentally improving the human condition through applied reason, especially
by using technology to eliminate aging and greatly enhance human intellectual, physical, and
psychological capacities. (Cole Turner, 2011, p. 11) On the other side, under the great change of the
environment, we may find different man made system to help us keep survive. We may have an
artificial life in the future. Steve and Veronika said that (Fuller Lipinska, 2014, p. 64) Transhumanism

Essay about HIstory of Astronomy and Neptune
Science is and has become a necessity to know just to keep up with the tremendous advancements of
today and tomorrow. Basic things, such as how the universe was suspected to be started or who
Ptolemy and Galileo were and what they did are just things that need to be known to fully understand
what is happening in the world around you. These things are what you need to know, if you re a

Johannes Kepler was born in 1571 and was one of the first strong believers of the heliocentric
planetary theory. He discovered the three laws of planetary motion. This German astronomer believed
in the Harmonices Mundi, or the Harmonies of the World. In his Harmonices Mundi he spoke of his
third law, which was about the relationship between the orbital periods and the distances of the planets
from the sun. He believed the sun regulates the velocity of the planets. This fact was a marking point
in Astronomy history. This left a path for Newton s theory of universal gravitation.
Galileo Galilei was a student at the University of Pisa. He studied medicine, though his real interests
were natural philosophy and mathematics. What he is mostly remembered for is his work on free fall,
his use of telescopes, and his employment of experimentation. In 1592, he became a professor of the
University of Padua. His job was to teach Euclid geometry and standard astronomy to medical
students. Instead he taught and lectured a more unconventional form of astronomy and natural
philosophy to his medical students. In a personal letter to Kepler sent in 1598, Galileo stated that he
was a Copernican, meaning he believed the teachings of

The Life of Adoption In my English class I was asked to write about a circumstance, an obstacle, or a

Russian Culture Vs Cuban Culture
Russia is the largest country in the world with a population of 145.3 million people (Bradford, n.d). Its
culture is one that has changed with time but has kept its traditions and values, the country is one of
several others that has experienced both a communist and a capitalist society. Russian culture puts a
lot of emphasis in family and friends (Bradford, n.d). During communist Russia friends and family
had to help each other in order to survive the extreme poverty that they had to go through, during
those times collectivism was developed and eventually passed to younger generations (Bradford, n.d).
While is true that Russia today is very different from the days in which Communism was present
people tend to follow the tradition of their parent and grandparents.
Russian culture is defined by its ethnic diversity, religion, music, arts, and literature which are admired
and respected all over the world. The country currently has close 190 ethnic groups composed of
Tartar, Ukrainian, Bashkir, Chuvash, and Chechen descent (Bradford, n.d). These ethnic groups have

A Blended Profession Essay

To begin, we need to acknowledge that sport plays an important position in the lives of many people
around the world today. Sport is not confined to specific boundaries as there are many different fields
that sport may permeate itself into. These fields include the sporting and economic sectors, sport
sciences as well as the practical and athletic professionals who participate in these fields (Refacuk,

Honor-Shame Code in The Tale of the Heike Essay

Honor Shame Code in The Tale of Heike In The Tale of Heike, the way in which the Japanese viewed
defeat and dying is revealed to the reader through various incidents covered during the time of the
novel. To be defeated was shameful but to prevail was a way to gain respect and honor. The accounts
in Heike tell us that one could defeat an opponent by exiling him, insulting him, or even taking
revenge upon him. Because being defeated was shameful, warriors would kill themselves before being
killed by the opponent. If a warrior failed in his duty, suicide would be the necessary measure taken to
regain honor. Not only could suicide be a way to gain honor, it could also be a way to shame someone.

Munetaka was ordered by Yoshitsune to shoot the fan right square in the middle (420), but Munetaka
hesitated to accept the order saying, if I missed, we d never outlive the disgrace (420). Not able to
refuse the angered Yoshitsune, Munetaka preparing to shoot closed his eyes in silent prayer saying,
Let me hit the center of that fan! If I miss, I ll smash my bow and kill myself I ll never show my face
again (420). Munetaka knew that his failure would disgrace the Genji and his suicide would be the
only way of recompense. Heike also reveals that another way to defeat your enemy and another way
to be shamed by your enemy was through humiliation. Kiyomori often humiliated his enemies. He
exiled Naritsune, Yasuyori, and Shunkan to Kikai ga shima, a faraway island, because they were
conspiring against the Taira. Later, only Naritsune and Yasuyori were pardoned but Shunkan was not.

Qualitative Research Question 2
To answer Research Question 2, the researcher analyzed the responses of childcare staff on the SIS.
Wage and program quality data were collected from the Supplemental Information sheet (SIS) created
by the researcher (see Appendix B). Two levels of quality were: Level 1 corresponded to state
licensing such as acquiring a Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) license; Level 2
corresponded to accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children
(NAEYC). There were 132 total survey responses for program quality, out of which 30 (23%) were
not NAEYC accredited and 102 (77%) were NAECY accredited. The wage per hour ranged from a
low of $ 8.50 to a high of $ 42.00. The total mean wage per hour for programs (n=105) was $ 14.50
(SD = $ 5). The mean wage per hour for Level 1 quality programs, (n=23), was $ 16 (SD = $ 6.9) and

Quality childcare programs for non maternal care have become a routine experience for many families
in the United States during the last quarter of the 20th century (Belsky, 2006). Considerable increase
in wages and benefits were fundamental to improving early childcare program quality; otherwise,
efforts might lead to manipulation of childcare staff versus effectiveness of program quality (Boyd,

development training, higher education, and enhanced skills. Professional development lead to
increased wages and benefits; however, early childcare staff experienced wage stagnation or

Liquidated By Karen Ho Summary
In the book Liquidated: An Ethnography of Wall Street, Karen Ho describes the culture of Wall Street.
Karen Ho is an American anthropologist, who earned her undergrad and graduate degrees from
Stanford University and got her Ph.D. in anthropology from Princeton University. In 1997, during the
middle of Ho s Princeton education, she took a leave of absence to work in lower Manhattan and
observe the natural habitat for investment banking. Bankers Trust New York Corporation (also known
as BT) hired Ho to be part of the Management Consulting Group. After six months, Ho was fired due

Downsizing creates multiple consequences in the workplace such as: job insecurity, less loyal
workers, high levels of unemployment, and high turnover. Outside of the Wall Street market,
downsizing has not shown to increase productivity, and instead it accounts to many employers quitting
often because they can foresee these downsizes (Class Notes, 9/22/14). Yet, in Wall Street, these
downsizes have desensitized the workers to layoffs. In addition, contracts have not become legally
binding and there are now severance packages and outplacement services for these constantly
uprooted workers. Overall, Ho (2009) argues that it is the cultural understandings and organizational
incentives of investment banks that help contribute to the creation of both unstable, unsustainable
markets and jobs (p.

Essay on Bio Warfare
Biological warfare is war waged with deadly chemicals, biological agents, or radioactive materials
(CBR). They can be used to kill large amounts of people, destroy food, or just temporarily stun them
for a matter of time so troops can come in and torture them or do whatever troops led by an
manipulative tyrant who destroys everything. Using CBR, allowed you to kill everything and leave the
buildings standing instead of nuclear weapons which destroy everything, put fallout in the air, and
have radioactive materials wash into the ground and streams. Using deadly chemicals in war has been
going on since the early 1900 s during World War I (1914 1918). Chemicals such as tear gas, chlorine

The Hague Conference of 1899 made an attempt to outlaw projectiles carrying poison gases; the
agreement to this effect lasted only until W.W.I. In Geneva in 1925 a League of Nations protocol
against chemical and biological war was signed; it was not, however, ratified by the United States
until 1975. The treaty outlaws the first use of such weapons in warfare, but nations generally reserve
the right to use them in retaliation. Agreements totally banning chemical warfare have proved difficult
to achieve. A treaty totally banning biological warfare was drawn up by the Geneva Disarmament
Conference in 1971 and approved by the United Nations General Assembly. Some 80 nations signed
the Biological Weapons Convention, which the United States ratified in 1974. This treaty is unique
because it outlaws a whole class of weapons by most of the world. Its effectiveness, however, is still
questionable; progress in genetic engineering has also complicated this issue. At the Bush Gorbachev
summit in June 1990, a treaty was signed providing for both the United States and USSR to reduce
stockpiles of chemical weapons. In May 1991, 19 industrial nations including the United States

Rockefeller was in fact a villain, he is also thought of as a hero to the Gilded Age because of the few
good acts he did. During the Gilded Age, oil was very expensive and difficult to acquire.Overall, only
the wealthy and well privileged had much access to it, but Standard Oil developed the world s largest
oil refineries and drove down the cost of refining oil, (World Book, Rockefeller). With Rockefeller as
the head of the company, he was able to expand access of oil to those who didn t have as much money
and produce large amounts of oil for little cost. With his new ideas and methods, he was able to cut
down oil cost and produce more of it more efficiently and quicker than that of the past. Due to
becoming one of the wealthiest individuals in the United States, Rockefeller had a substantial amount
of money and He gave away about $540 million during his lifetime. He gave most of his money to the
public through foundations he established himself and through other organizations, (World Book,

these generous donations from Rockefeller. They are still functioning today and Rockefellers impact
on them has never been forgotten. As a result, John D. Rockefeller was thought of to be a hero rather

Essay about Architects as Managers of Change in Croatia
Architects as Managers of Change in Croatia
Transition in a social sense is a change from one system into another. Globally, the modernist
paradigm changed to the post modern with the disappearance of central authorities, universal dogmas
and foundational ethics. The post modern world introduced fragmentation, instability, indeterminacy
and insecurity. Architectural responses to these conditions occurred as a semantic nightmare of the
post modern discourse and/or the attempted completion of the modern project .
In Croatia, transition occurred as a quantum leap from the Socialist, one party, state controlled market
system, into a capitalist, parliamentary democratic, free market system. In 1989, with the fall of the

The Principles Of The Us Electoral System
In this paper, we will consider the principles of the US electoral system. We will discuss the historical
aspect of the presidential elections and respond to the following questions: Is the election of the
President of the United States a result of a direct democracy or a representative democracy? Who was
eligible to vote for the president in the 1790 s? We will also find out the purpose of the Electoral
College and discuss principles of its work.
The electoral system of the United States is based on the principle of equality of all residents of the
states and a rigid filter of the candidates (instead of the usual majority principle). In 1787, at the
Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia fathers of the nation were considering various options of
the American electoral system.
The first option is the election of the President by the Congress members. It was rejected because this
method would cause a serious disagreement between the members of the Congress and reduce its
efficiency; also it could generate intrigue and corruption in the Congress.
The second option is the election of the President by the legislatures of the states. It was rejected
because of the possible weakening of central bodies of the USA executive power.
The third option is direct election of the president of the United States by citizens. It was rejected,
because in such a case, the populous states would determine the outcome of elections, and the role of
the rest would be kept to a minimum.

Evolution of Cognitive Psychology
Evolution of Cognitive Psychology
Cognitive psychology is defined as the scientific study of mental processes (Riegler Riegler 2008, p.

During this time period, attention to the study of how internal states, such as thoughts, feelings, and

21). Human beings process information in a similar way. The creation of the computer was a great
advantage in the field as well. Scientists found that the human mind and a computer shared many
features in input, information processing, and organization.
Another reason in the emergence in cognitive psychology was the S R approach. The S R approach of
learning language was devised by B.F. Skinner; which was a behaviorist approach. Skinner argued
that even complex ability like language could be captured in purely S R terms (Riegler Riegler 2008,
p. 20). Noam Chomsky criticized Skinner s analysis regarding the S R approach claiming it to appear
to be scientific. Chomsky felt that language was grasped in the mind, thus, popularized cognitive
psychology. Overall, behaviorism was unreliable in the explanation of language.
Impact of the Decline of Behaviorism on Cognitive Psychology
The decline of behaviorism enabled the presence of cognitive psychology. Critics of behaviorism
believed that the failure was to address factors such as free will, internal thoughts, and other methods
of learning (Cherry, 2010). Behaviorists introduced the emphasis on scientific method, therefore,
opening the door to cognitive psychology. According to Riegler Riegler (2008) the failure of the S R
approach, coupled with the promise and excitement

Santa Gertrudis Cattle Research Paper
What does one think of when they see cattle at the local county fair? Do they classify them as a red

more diverse than black and white. To begin with, Santa Gertrudis cattle are a tropical beef breed of

understanding the depth of Marjane s thoughts as a child. She is very different from the rest of the

Panselectionism Vs Pluralism
I am reminded of learning that when air rushes out of a flat tire, it isn t being squeezed out, it is merely
not being completely contained and the kinetics of matter in the gas phase are sufficient to allow the
tire to deflate to equilibrium with the atmosphere. At first this seemed like a linguistic matter and
mostly irrelevant. For most people it is a completely irrelevant nuance, but not for physicists and
chemists who are using the principles of effusion to separate isotopes of radioactive uranium.
Similarly, while a discussion regarding the difference between panselectionism and pluralism will
sedate most readers into a state of drooling submission, the critique issued by Gould and Lewontin

Several alternatives to panselectionism are presented and are generally all a variation on the neutral
theory of molecular evolution (printing should pend inquiry regarding the lack of credit to Motoo
Kimura for development of said theory). This hypothesis proposes that random genetic drift plays a
dominant role in genetic evolution with selection playing a minor supporting role. In the section titled
Telling Stories, the authors criticize scientists who ignore and/or marginalize the more likely
explanation of neutral theory in favor of the archaic approach of justifying every identifiable
characteristic of an organism as beneficial and inventing an often completely untestable hypothesis for
its utility. I heartily agree with this objection I have long felt that the field of evolutionary biology is
weakened every time the phrase over millions of years is uttered (and it is uttered far beyond the point
of cliché), and every time a biologist duplicitously represents that selection happens without values
and judgment (of course), and then proceeds to describe the various features in terms of survival value
and utility. As the authors point out, the mere existence of a good fit between organism and
environment is insufficient evidence for inferring the action of natural selection (593). Finally, the
authors invoke Darwin himself in order to remind readers that He was patently pluralist and bristled at
being portrayed as a panselectionist although as Gould and Lewontin note, we do not now regard all
of Darwin s subsidiary mechanisms as significant or even valid

The fiduciary administration is the responsibility of the trustee for managing the trust property. The
trustee has all of the powers over trust property that a legally competent, unmarried individual has

The question we must ask ourselves is what exactly the Profession of Arms is and what is our role as
Human Resource Sergeants (HR Sergeants) what is it that we bring to the fight, what s our
contribution to the Army s overall objective. As we emerge from years of war, from constant back to
back deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, we find ourselves in an era of persistent conflicts where we
find ourselves embroiled in conflicts all around the world. In a world that seems more dangerous
today than it was yesterday it is important we remain vigilant and remain capable of fighting and
winning our nations wars. We must never forget the ethics instilled upon us by the Army. We must
hold fast to our Army Values to which our profession is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Human Resource Professionals our core competencies our very profession places us at the very
heart of the profession of arms. HR Soldiers impact Soldiers careers every day. The Balancing Role of
the Professional s Leader: Balancing the role of the Professional Leader has been an ongoing issue for
the Army since the latter decades of the 19th century when the U.S. Army was professionalized. The
Army has struggled with the matter of balancing a force as massive as the Army. When out of balance
the Army does not have the capability to send Soldiers where they are needed. During the Second War
in Iraq it was obvious that the Army was not upholding this balance, junior leaders in the Army were
fighting against a counterinsurgency campaign that they were ill prepared to handle due to a lack of
necessary experience and equipment. Army leaders must balance the link between the Army s culture
and it s climate and institutional practices. When there is a proper balance it has a huge impact on the
mindset of the Army s Soldiers. Their actions or inactions impacts the five key attributes of the
profession, and the four fields of expertise, and have long term effects on the Army s culture and
climate. These actions influence Soldiers perceptions that they are serving professional who have
answered the call of service to the republic, it is important that Soldiers understand that their role is a
calling and not just a job. The Army

Consequences Of Unisciplined Children In The Veldt By Ray...
Consequences of undisciplined children Many people have witnessed a toddler having a meltdown in
public only to have a parent sooth them by giving in to the child s demand. Although sometimes this
can be a beneficial parenting technique, if a parent over indulges a child too often, then that child can
become spoiled. However in The Veldt , Ray Bradbury challenges the idea of satisfying children; he
suggests through his tragic tale of the spoiled and undisciplined children Wendy and Peter, that over
indulged kids will be taught to not value their family. Through the use of spoiling kids, harms of
technology, and conflict, Ray Bradbury shows children need to be disciplined in order to be well
rounded individuals. Bradbury uses spoiling Wendy and Peter to show they weren t well rounded, by
emphasizing that they were over indulged in materialistic wants. When parents Lydia and George
were talking, Lydia explained, They re insufferable let s admit it. They come and go when they like;
they treat us as if we were offspring. They re spoiled and we re spoiled. The description of how the
parents feel provides the reader with a better understanding that even the parents can no longer control
Wendy and Peter s disrespectful ways caused by their mistakes of spoiling the children. Bradbury
establishes the kids as so over indulged that even Lydia and George could not discipline the children if
they put their minds to it. Towards the end of the story we see that not being able to

Attraction In Cross-Sex Relationships Essay
Can you be friends with someone you like? The dynamic of cross sex friendships is an interesting area
of study and one of which has little data. Moreover, research on this narrow subject is rather limited
and comes from fairly old studies. The idea that men and women cannot be just friends, is due to the
idea that there must be some aspect of physical and or romantic involved. As Reeder discussed
traditional societal norms and expectations of male female relationships have played a role in how we
view cross sex friendships today. The literature on cross sex friendships has explored the role of
attraction and the impact it has on the dynamics of cross sex relationships. This literature review will
investigate the role of attraction on cross sex relationships and whether attraction hinders being friends
with someone you like. Further, exploring the various common themes among the literature on
attraction in cross sex friendships: the definition of attraction is subjective and there are different types
of attraction, attraction tends to confuse the definition of the relationship, men perceive attraction
more than women and lastly, attraction indeed is a challenge but not necessarily detrimental. It is
hypothesized that attraction creates a significant challenge for those involved in a cross sex
relationship. Therefore, once attraction becomes an issue in the relationship, the possibility of the
relationship lasting is questionable. The following five studies support the

The Consequences Of The European Colonization Of Native...
European Colonization was rapidly expanded after Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer arrived
in the Americas. The start of the Colonization is dated to 1492. The European Colonization of the
Americas was a tragedy because, the Native Americans were living a peaceful life and the arrival of
Europeans has led to the devastation of indigenous communities through diseases, violence and
dispossession. The most harmful consequences of the European Settlement to the Native Americans
was the transfer of diseases. Europeans brought diseases such as small pox, measles and influenza.
This had destructive consequences for native Americans who could not fight these diseases as they did
not possess immunity. They had no time to recover from these epidemic diseases and started dying
quickly. Small pox spread from tribe to tribe along the trade routes. Thus, within a century, diseases
have reduced indigenous populations by as much as 95% making matters worse. The Epidemic took
years to exhaust itself and may have killed 90% of the people in coastal New England. This made a
huge difference to American History. (Mann, 1491) The drastic death of so many Native Americans
decimated the supply of labors who were working under the Europeans in the Americas. One of the
reasons for death was that most Native Americans were not experienced for many bacterial diseases
so, they had little or no knowledge on how to combat them. The practice where family and friends
gathered with the shaman at

The French Revolution In Haiti
Haiti splits the island of Hispaniola with its neighbor, the Dominican Republic in the Greater Antilles
of the Caribbean Sea. Established by Spain in 1492, control of Haiti was ceded to the French and the
island began to flourish under its new rulers. The slave trade played an enormous part of the country s
history, at the time accounting for nearly a third of the entire slave trade across the Atlantic. Controlled
for years by the French, Haiti then called Saint Domingue was the Pearl of the Antilles, one of the
richest islands in France s empire. In the 1780s, Haiti exported 60% of all the coffee and 40% of all
the sugar consumed in Europe: more than all of Britain s West Indian colonies combined, (Henley,
2010). It wasn t until nearly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to the ongoing French Revolution back at home, the war ended in 1803. The French simply could
not afford to be fighting two wars at once. On January 1, 1804, the first, and only, country born of a
slave revolt, was born. However, this was not the end of French involvement. France demanded 150
million francs in reparations for the war in order to be recognized as a republic. Von Tunzelmann, a
contributor to the article by Henley, said that ...Haiti was paying reparations to France from 1825 until
1947. It took out huge loans from American, German and French banks. By 1900, Haiti was spending
about 80% of its national budget on loan repayments. By the time the original reparations and interest
were paid off, the place was basically destitute and trapped in a spiral of debt, (Henley, 2010). Tired of
dealing with a failed government, another revolution began in 1911. This revolution led to a long
period of US occupation. Following failed dictators, regimes, and governments, François ¬ Papa Doc
Duvalier became the leader of Haiti in 1957. His regime was one of darkness, death, and oppression,
considered one of the worst in the history of the

Wes Anderson Research Paper
They re many renowned filmmakers these days. You have Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Quentin
Tarantino, Ridley Scott, James Cameron, and this list goes on and on. Though these filmmakers are at
the top of the food chain in their respective works, some of their works aren t all distinguishable.
Every year Hollywood produces many films that all look the same. What I mean to say is: when you
watch a movie made by one of the figures mentioned above, you can t always tie that movie to them.
Oh that s a Steven Spielberg movie isn t a given all the time. The reason I say this is because there s
one prominent filmmaker that you can always tie movies to, Wes Anderson. When you watch one of
Anderson s films, you immediately know he was the director behind the piece. The real question is:
how can you know? What makes him stand out from the rest? The answer? His stylistic technique.
Wes Anderson s stylistic technique is unique. He repeatedly uses the same characters in his films, he
emphasizes and contrasts when it comes to his use of color, all of his films have similar themes, his
use of symmetry is present everywhere, and he uses music to fit ... Show more content on

Whether it be The Grand Budapest Hotel, or The Life Aquatic, Anderson loves to compose his shots
with perfect symmtery, which allows for his images to appear satisfyingly inviting, and box like.
Though directors are taught to avoid symmetry due to it s stage y nature, Anderson consistently
organizes the elements in his frame so that the most important element is smack in the middle, which
is a major component in making his films distinct. Wes Anderson acquired this trait from his
inspiration, Stanley Kubrick. Stanley Kubrick, just like Wes Anderson, would compose most of his
shots using one point perspective. The use of symmetry is what allows Anderson s films to look
different from other films made by other

Sentimentality Of William Tavener Analysis
In Sentimentality of William Tavener the events of the plot are ordered in chronological order with
brief flashbacks. The story is about a family who lives in the middle of nowhere. The kids of the
family work hard on the farm every day and the mother believes that they should have a break to go to
the circus. The husband and wife did not have a very loving relationship, so the mother was always
defensive on the topic of her sons: the main cause of the majority of their disagreements. The mother
went into detail on how much fun her experience was as a child. The husband corrects her on one of
the animals that she had mistaken for something else. They then got into the discussion of certain
elements of the circus. The topic of the circus soon changed to more recent, topics. The husband and
wife connected again and the mother announced that the boys could go to the fair. She took into
consideration how the father would feel and took up for him by saying that he earned his money by ...

things, and now they had as much to say to each other as people who meet after a long separation. By
sticking pieces of their childhood and personal lives in the middle of the story, you can see how and
why the two end up bonding over their memories. In paragraph 25, the wife warns the kids, And you
better be careful of that, an don t waste it. Your father works hard for his money. This piece contradicts
the description of his wife in paragraph 19. Paragraph 19 provides the background that says, In her
desire to indulge her boys she had unconsciously assumed a defensive and almost hostile attitude
towards her husband. The wife went from defending her boys with everything that she had to

The purpose of exams is to determine your current level of course knowledge. Exams are not devised
to reward hard work or effort, though hard work and effort generally contribute to greater course
knowledge and, thus, better exam grades.
Participation 5% of your final grade Participation will be based on a random day I choose to take
attendance and involvement in class. I may include attitude and personal interest in the course and
course materials, and partaking in optional voluntary essay assignments given throughout the semester
as part of the participation 5%. It looks like this: 1% attendance and 4% optional essay or voluntary
participation during class. Many students opt for the essay credit in which case I will expect APA style
with appropriate university student quality with proper grammar and spelling. I will also provide a
CIVILITY bonus for showing respect in abstaining from inappropriate internet use during lectures.
Missing an Exam: Make up exams will be provided only for serious medical or compassionate

Examples Of Conformity In The Giver
We all know what it feels like, to go to a new school and the excitement that follows. Then you go in
the building and suddenly the mood changes, everyone is staring at you. The excitement is only
distant memories and it makes you uncomfortable and you might even hate the school on first sight. If
conformity is put into place, then everyone will be happier and safer. I think conformity helps our
society by creating a more harmonized, safer, and a more balanced community.
Conformity is better than individualism as in the communities are safer. The novel The Giver by Lois
Lowry tells us about their conformitized community. Jonas, on page 63, says to the reader that the
community is extremely protective of every one in the community and that

Saki s The Interlopers vs. Callaghan s All the Years of Her Life
In the story The Interlopers, Saki writes about
two families that have been feuding for generations. He writes about how interlopers
stop them from rivaling, and eventually bring the two of them to be friends
only minutes before they are eaten by wolves. He does this by using dramatic
irony. Through the character s words he tells us what the two will do when
they get back to town now that they are friends. This leads you to believe
that the feud is over and everything is all right. The author then, however,
allows the characters to be eaten by wolves; contrary to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Alfred is confronted by Mr. Carr, the store clerk, and is caught. Mr. Carr
then calls Alfred s mother, Mrs. Higgins, to stop by because Alfred is in trouble.
Mrs. Higgins arrives and Mr. Carr makes clear to her the situation. She asks
Alfred if it is true that he stole the items, and he confesses so she takes
him home. Alfred sees his mother s pain, and causes him to think some and
mature. He acts more grown up afterwards, and there is no iron
y in the resolution
of this story. Callaghan achieves his purpose of showing that situations that
require acting grown up can cause you to mature in your thinking.
In
both stories, the main characters are significantly changed due to circumstances
and situations that they face. In the story The Interlopers, the two men were
fierce enemies because of the feud that had been going on in their family.
By the end they have pity for each other, put aside their differences and
become friends. In All the Years of Her Life, Alfred is changed in the way
that he has matured. He realizes that his petty thefts and childish antics
deeply hurt his mother; embarrass her because he sees her crying

  • 2. Langston Hughes Identity Search for Identity in the Poetry of Langston Hughes In exploring the problem of identity in Black literature we find no simple or definite explanation. Nevertheless, it is generally accepted that it is rooted in the reality of the discriminatory social system in America with its historic origins in the institution of slavery. One can discern that this slavery system imposes a double burden on the Negro through severe social and economic inequalities and through the heavy psychological consequences suffered by the Negro who is forced to play an inferior role, 1 the latter relates to the low self estimate, feeling of helplessness and basic identity conflict. Thus, in some form or the other, every Negro American is confronted with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His own life influenced his art. Being born in a Negro family and at a time of racial discrimination from his early childhood, he had to bear the ruthless behaviour of the whites. So, from the very beginning of his life he faced many problems viz., racial discrimination, lack of identity in the society and no actual or practical freedom of blacks etc. All this put a remarkable impact on his mind, on his soul and made him a poet of blacks. A great votary of black art, Hughes inaugurated a distinct movement of negritude which may be regarded as the soul of Harlem. Rising from his consciousness of the colour of his skin and passing through various stages of identification with people and territory of Africa and finally grounding it in the American Past, negritude in the poetry of Hughes evolves into a definite and enduring concept expressive of definite vision.6 But he doesn t suffer from what W.E.B. DuBois terms as double consciousness two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body. 7 Langston Hughes in his essay on The Negro Artist and ... • 3. Themes In Snowpiercer Bong Joon ho s 2013 science fiction film, Snowpiercer, based in a graphic novel of the same name, offers a look into a frozen future where the last of mankind lives on an evermoving locomotive. It s a contemporary film focused around the theme of classism in society, driven by metaphors for where we are and where we are going. With an almost mashup of Orwell meeting the 99%, the story focuses on the inhabitants of the suppressed population of the train s tail section, led by Chris Evans Curtis, revolting against the forward living. The film s narrative in relation to its theme is the focal point of the film and it s main driving force. By using a linear narrative, Joon ho allows the story to move forward as the characters move towards the front of train. With each decision Curtis makes, the blocking of his movements is always in a forward motion. He is always looking forward because he has a definite purpose and only second guesses in a scene (the only scene) where he looks forward and backward toward two separate outcomes of one decision as the camera follows his head movement in a left and right ... It s easy to see why the tail sectioners choose to follow him; he is the the one they deem smart and driven enough to lead them to their journey s end. I can t tell if it s the way he meant the character to be portrayed and that s just Evan s natural charismatic nature showing through but it adds a layer to the character that makes his decisions and emotions seem more concrete. The rest of the cast does a great job of carrying out action beats in relation to the workings of the class and machinery present in the film s screenplay. • 5. Women And Women In Giovanni Boccaccio And Francesco Barbaro Giovanni Boccaccio and Francesco Barbaro provides for not only the men, but women in Italian society their conventional opinion on the perfect example of how a wife should act and behave in order to keep the domestic life at peace and whole. Through their story and most gracious outlook on a woman s life, we can see what a marriage was life during this time. Based upon reading Boccaccio s Decameron X, the story of the Count of Panago, Gualtieri and his peasant born wife, Griselda, as well as Barbaro s On Wifely Duties, one may conclude that Barbaro would have considered Griselda a good wife. In the story, Griselda endured the severe and unheard of trials that Gualtieri imposed upon her and remained not only tearless but a happy face. From the presuming murder of their own children to telling Griselda she will no longer be his wife, and be sent back to her poor, little house from where she came, Griselda concealed her misery and unhappiness, with silence and no tears. Many ways in her behavior indicates Griselda was the perfect wife during the Renaissance, according to Barbaro; firstly, her obedience. Barbaro wrote that obedience to the husband was the most important component in a marriage. In order that a wife does her duty and brings peace and harmony to her household, she must agree to the first principle that she does not disagree with her husband on any point. Barbaro implies stealthily that if a wife does not do her duty in agreeing and obeying her husband, she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Prince Edward Island Of Canada Prince Edward Island is a five thousand, six hundred and sixty square kilometre island off the eastern coast of Canada. When an island is part of a larger nation, and not provided with a physical connection to the mainland, it is a dismembered limb from the functioning body of the country. The insularity is a handicap, rather than a factor of uniqueness. Transportation from the island to the mainland has typically been somewhat of an issue, as the Northumberland strait between the landmasses freezes partially in winter, making travel difficult. The first peoples of the island, the Mi kmaq, would make the crossing via canoe and carry the boat over the patches of ice. Once settlers inhabited the island it became necessary to have constant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1775, the British Governor Walter Patterson persuaded the islanders to carry the mail to Nova Scotia in the same way. These voyages became important to the colonies, since they proved that the island was not isolated from the outside world for months each year. In the first few decades of the nineteenth century, trips became a regular service with a captain and crew once per week. Although regular, these trips remained dangerous and a major inconvenience. A canoe was replaced by an iceboat with a captain and three crew. The sick and injured, as well as the women and children, would be carried across the ice in the boat, but would have to pay twice as much. The trip from Cape Traverse on PEI to the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick took at least a day, and passengers ran the risk of catching frostbite and hypothermia. In a rare case a boat was stranded overnight during a winter storm and a man was killed by extreme hypothermia. As time went by, safety procedures were introduced. Boats were to be sent out in groups of three, and were required to carry compasses, axes, food, and fire making materials. Because of these dangerous, uncomfortable, and awfully expensive journeys, Prince Edward Island made government funded transportation a necessary requirement for the island joining confederation. This album released in 1994, sold only modestly but was warmly received by critics (Simon and Schuster, 2001), and gained Buckley immense respect as an artist. His song Lover, you should ve come over was evidence that Buckley was a talented artist who was not only an excellent performer but an excellent songwriter who could craft melodies and words as well. Lover is essentially a soul ballad (Beviglia, 2014), with moments of intensity and moments of release as well. Through analyzing this song one may begin to explore the song s virtual experience also known as the story, or narrative of a musical work that is influenced by the artist perspective (Sellnow, 2007), as well as the virtual time, and understand the overall message and congruency or incongruences of the song. Lover by Jeff Buckley is a song with an interesting message due to its hopeful lyrics and soulful tone and instrumentation, which create a congruent depiction of the message. Jeff Buckley s song Lover You Should ve Come Over expresses a storyline through its virtual experience of a protagonist beating all odds and seeking a resolution. Through the incorporation of dramatic illusion and comic rhythm, this song additionally creates a virtual story with feelings of suspense. Psychological Processes that May Be Involved in Obedience to Authority Obedience is the following of someone else s instructions or orders to do something. The instructions are usually from someone who has authority such as a parent or teacher. Milgram proposed the agentic state theory; this is where we act as an agent of someone who has authority, it means that we find it easy to deny personal responsibility for our actions because we have just been following orders or doing our job. In 1950 Adorno expressed his beliefs that personality was a better explanation of obedience. Social influence has been investigated by a large number of psychologists such as Asch, Zimbardo and Milgram. There have been many issues raised by other psychologists as to whether the procedures that they used were ethically questionable. This means that the research wasn t carried out in an ethical way and so they have caused themselves much criticism. In 1951 Solomon Asch tried to find out if people would conform in highly unambiguous situations. Asch did this by setting up a circumstance where seven people all sat looking at a display. In turn they had to say out loud which one of three lines was the same length as line X . All but one of the participants was a confederate of the experimenter, and on some vital trials the confederates were asked to unanimously give the same wrong answer. The one genuine participant was the last to offer their opinion on each trial. The performance of participants exposed to such group pressure was compared to their performance in a control condition in which there were no confederates. Despite Asch s findings he was criticised for the way that he carried out his experiment, Asch undertook this study in 1950 s America, this was a time when conformity was high and doing your ... • 11. Using Conditional Copula to Estimate Value Risk Review: Using Conditional Copula to Estimate Value at Risk ActSc 991 Project Changwu (Allen) Chen April 14, 2014 1 1 Introduction Value at Risk (VaR) plays a central role in risk management. By definition, VaR is the maximum expected loss of a portfolio over a given time horizon with a certain confidence level. VaR can be seen as a quantile on the lower tail of the distribution of portfolio returns. Although VaR is a simple measure, it is not easily estimated. There are several approaches for the estimation of VaR, such as historical simulations, the variance covariance, and the Monte Carlo approaches. The first approach does not assume any underlying distribution, whereas the last two approaches demand the joint distribution to be known, which frequently assumed to be normal distribution. However, the deviation from normality could lead to an inadequate VaR estimate. In this case, the portfolio could be either riskier than desired or unnecessarily conservative. The theory of copula is a powerful tool in modelling multivariate distributions be cause it does not require the assumption of joint normality and it is a marginal free model. Copula have been broadly used in the statistical literature. And due to its simplicity and convenience, one may be interested in its application in the financial area. In this paper I will first give a brief summary of the paper written by Helder Parra Palaro and Luiz Koodi Hotta [1]. Then I will discuss the key results presented in the paper ... Honor-Shame Code in The Tale of the Heike Essay 11/28/12 HIST485 Honor Shame Code in The Tale of Heike In The Tale of Heike, the way in which the Japanese viewed defeat and dying is revealed to the reader through various incidents covered during the time of the novel. To be defeated was shameful but to prevail was a way to gain respect and honor. The accounts in Heike tell us that one could defeat an opponent by exiling him, insulting him, or even taking revenge upon him. Because being defeated was shameful, warriors would kill themselves before being killed by the opponent. If a warrior failed in his duty, suicide would be the necessary measure taken to regain honor. Not only could suicide be a way to gain honor, it could also be a way to shame someone. If you prohibit your enemy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If I miss, I ll smash my bow and kill myself I ll never show my face again (420). Munetaka knew that his failure would disgrace the Genji and his suicide would be the only way of recompense. Heike also reveals that another way to defeat your enemy and another way to be shamed by your enemy was through humiliation. Kiyomori often humiliated his enemies. He exiled Naritsune, Yasuyori, and Shunkan to Kikai ga shima, a faraway island, because they were conspiring against the Taira. Later, only Naritsune and Yasuyori were pardoned but Shunkan was not. This was Kiyomori s revenge on Shunkan because Kiyomori had given Shunkan his job and still had the nerve to betray him (290 291). Through exile, Kiyomori shamed Naritsune, Yasuyori, and Shunkan by denying them the opportunity to commit suicide but sentencing them to death by starvation. Insults were another way to shame your enemy. Nakatsuma passive aggressively denies Munemori the chance to ride Konoshita, his horse, by saying the horse was tired from having been overridden (306). Outside of the Wall Street market, downsizing has not shown to increase productivity, and instead it accounts to many employers quitting often because they can foresee these downsizes (Class Notes, 9/22/14). Yet, in Wall Street, these downsizes have desensitized the workers to layoffs. In addition, contracts have not become legally binding and there are now severance packages and outplacement services for these constantly uprooted workers. A treaty totally banning biological warfare was drawn up by the Geneva Disarmament Conference in 1971 and approved by the United Nations General Assembly. Who was eligible to vote for the president in the 1790 s? We will also find out the purpose of the Electoral College and discuss principles of its work. The electoral system of the United States is based on the principle of equality of all residents of the states and a rigid filter of the candidates (instead of the usual majority principle). In 1787, at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia fathers of the nation were considering various options of the American electoral system. The first option is the election of the President by the Congress members. It was rejected because this method would cause a serious disagreement between the members of the Congress and reduce its efficiency; also it could generate intrigue and corruption in the Congress. Scientists found that the human mind and a computer shared many features in input, information processing, and organization. Skinner argued that even complex ability like language could be captured in purely S R terms (Riegler Riegler 2008, p. 20). In the section titled Telling Stories, the authors criticize scientists who ignore and/or marginalize the more likely explanation of neutral theory in favor of the archaic approach of justifying every identifiable characteristic of an organism as beneficial and inventing an often completely untestable hypothesis for its utility. The Issue Of Ministry At The Church For Katie, having grown up at the church where she served for six years, her investment is deep in the holistic potential of ministry, but the most painful conflict she experienced was the complications due to the ongoing friendships and boss relationships when conflict was not resolved properly. One of the biggest conflicts she had was when she had started to date someone that her boss could foresee red flags (because he mentored the young man as well), but didn t intervene because the boss didn t know how to speak to her both as a boss and as a friend to Katie. Katie had been very close to her boss and saw him as a father figure. Sadly, her boss chose to be passive in his sentiments and gossiped to numerous people before ever talking ... For her situation, Katie learned what she can expect of this individual, while also believing that it is possible, given different personalities or healthy self awareness, to find that balance of boss and friend. Katie believes that some of the factors that could benefit this dynamic being possible is clear communication and expectations between both parties that more things can be discussable if framed within who they are speaking as (ie. as your boss, I wanted to discuss how my expectations of you were not met in this way , or as your friend, this is something I ve noticed ). Being able to discuss requires us to be able to have critical and important conversations without demonizing the messenger/person and being able to talk about what needs to be talked about. If this value is partnered with great humility on both sides to listen to one another and be open to where each could be missing something or be wrong, we could flourish. Modern Day Case Study: Gregory Gregory was on staff as a teaching and young adult pastor at a large, Mid western church. The church was reaching out to young families in the suburbs and it was a very busy season in ministry. There were issues in this church that gave him pause regarding the health of the leadership structure, but the church was growing very quickly. As so often happens in successful churches, growth covered over a multitude of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Army has struggled with the matter of balancing a force as massive as the Army. When out of balance the Army does not have the capability to send Soldiers where they are needed. • 39. Consequences Of Unisciplined Children In The Veldt By Ray... Consequences of undisciplined children Many people have witnessed a toddler having a meltdown in public only to have a parent sooth them by giving in to the child s demand. Although sometimes this can be a beneficial parenting technique, if a parent over indulges a child too often, then that child can become spoiled. However in The Veldt , Ray Bradbury challenges the idea of satisfying children; he suggests through his tragic tale of the spoiled and undisciplined children Wendy and Peter, that over indulged kids will be taught to not value their family. Through the use of spoiling kids, harms of technology, and conflict, Ray Bradbury shows children need to be disciplined in order to be well rounded individuals. Bradbury uses spoiling Wendy and Peter to show they weren t well rounded, by emphasizing that they were over indulged in materialistic wants. When parents Lydia and George were talking, Lydia explained, They re insufferable let s admit it. They come and go when they like; they treat us as if we were offspring. They re spoiled and we re spoiled. The description of how the parents feel provides the reader with a better understanding that even the parents can no longer control Wendy and Peter s disrespectful ways caused by their mistakes of spoiling the children. Bradbury establishes the kids as so over indulged that even Lydia and George could not discipline the children if they put their minds to it. Towards the end of the story we see that not being able to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Attraction In Cross-Sex Relationships Essay Can you be friends with someone you like? The dynamic of cross sex friendships is an interesting area of study and one of which has little data. Moreover, research on this narrow subject is rather limited and comes from fairly old studies. The idea that men and women cannot be just friends, is due to the idea that there must be some aspect of physical and or romantic involved. As Reeder discussed traditional societal norms and expectations of male female relationships have played a role in how we view cross sex friendships today. The literature on cross sex friendships has explored the role of attraction and the impact it has on the dynamics of cross sex relationships. This literature review will investigate the role of attraction on cross sex relationships and whether attraction hinders being friends with someone you like. Further, exploring the various common themes among the literature on attraction in cross sex friendships: the definition of attraction is subjective and there are different types of attraction, attraction tends to confuse the definition of the relationship, men perceive attraction more than women and lastly, attraction indeed is a challenge but not necessarily detrimental. It is hypothesized that attraction creates a significant challenge for those involved in a cross sex relationship. Therefore, once attraction becomes an issue in the relationship, the possibility of the relationship lasting is questionable. The following five studies support the ... • 41. The Consequences Of The European Colonization Of Native... European Colonization was rapidly expanded after Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer arrived in the Americas. The start of the Colonization is dated to 1492. The European Colonization of the Americas was a tragedy because, the Native Americans were living a peaceful life and the arrival of Europeans has led to the devastation of indigenous communities through diseases, violence and dispossession. The most harmful consequences of the European Settlement to the Native Americans was the transfer of diseases. Europeans brought diseases such as small pox, measles and influenza. This had destructive consequences for native Americans who could not fight these diseases as they did not possess immunity. They had no time to recover from these epidemic diseases and started dying quickly. Small pox spread from tribe to tribe along the trade routes. Thus, within a century, diseases have reduced indigenous populations by as much as 95% making matters worse. The Epidemic took years to exhaust itself and may have killed 90% of the people in coastal New England. This made a huge difference to American History. (Mann, 1491) The drastic death of so many Native Americans decimated the supply of labors who were working under the Europeans in the Americas. One of the reasons for death was that most Native Americans were not experienced for many bacterial diseases so, they had little or no knowledge on how to combat them. France demanded 150 million francs in reparations for the war in order to be recognized as a republic. Von Tunzelmann, a contributor to the article by Henley, said that ...Haiti was paying reparations to France from 1825 until 1947. It took out huge loans from American, German and French banks. By 1900, Haiti was spending about 80% of its national budget on loan repayments. By the time the original reparations and interest were paid off, the place was basically destitute and trapped in a spiral of debt, (Henley, 2010). • 43. Wes Anderson Research Paper They re many renowned filmmakers these days. You have Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Ridley Scott, James Cameron, and this list goes on and on. Though these filmmakers are at the top of the food chain in their respective works, some of their works aren t all distinguishable. Every year Hollywood produces many films that all look the same. What I mean to say is: when you watch a movie made by one of the figures mentioned above, you can t always tie that movie to them. Oh that s a Steven Spielberg movie isn t a given all the time. The reason I say this is because there s one prominent filmmaker that you can always tie movies to, Wes Anderson. When you watch one of Anderson s films, you immediately know he was the director behind the piece. The real question is: how can you know? What makes him stand out from the rest? The answer? His stylistic technique. Wes Anderson s stylistic technique is unique. The story is about a family who lives in the middle of nowhere. The kids of the family work hard on the farm every day and the mother believes that they should have a break to go to the circus. The husband and wife did not have a very loving relationship, so the mother was always defensive on the topic of her sons: the main cause of the majority of their disagreements. The mother went into detail on how much fun her experience was as a child. The husband corrects her on one of the animals that she had mistaken for something else. They then got into the discussion of certain elements of the circus. The topic of the circus soon changed to more recent, topics. Then you go in the building and suddenly the mood changes, everyone is staring at you. The excitement is only distant memories and it makes you uncomfortable and you might even hate the school on first sight. If conformity is put into place, then everyone will be happier and safer. I think conformity helps our society by creating a more harmonized, safer, and a more balanced community. Conformity is better than individualism as in the communities are safer. The novel The Giver by Lois Lowry tells us about their conformitized community. He writes about how interlopers stop them from rivaling, and eventually bring the two of them to be friends only minutes before they are eaten by wolves. He does this by using dramatic irony. Through the character s words he tells us what the two will do when they get back to town now that they are friends. This leads you to believe that the feud is over and everything is all right.
