Women During The Kenyan Emergency Of The 1950 s
In order to explain the significance of women during the Kenyan Emergency of the 1950 s,
Millicent Whitemore composed a powerful argument that highlighted the importance that women
played in the Mau Mau Movement against the British colonial government. By contrasting the
traditional views of women with the critical roles they played during the conflict, Whitemore
showed just how incredibly important women were in the Movement. With the use of an abundance
of sources and firsthand accounts, Whitemore created not only a credible and valid argument, but
also a more convincing and persuading one as well. As such, the author has developed and formed
an effective argument highlighting the importance of women during the Mau Mau movement with

The Political Landscape Of South Eastern Asia
Introduction: The political landscape of South Eastern Asia
The politics of South Eastern Asia in respect to the conflicts of India Pakistan Kashmir dispute
and the Korean Peninsula dispute, are really leftover cleavages by greater powers that occupied
/supported the respective regions. Hence like all leftover problems of the ages past, it is
complicated by nature. However as all actors seek to win the favor of great powers once more,
the regional power, China is facing a complicated problem, the problem of having to supporting an
ungrateful ally and supporting an ally that won t win, all involved in conflicts that can t be solved
in the foreseeable future. China, despite having a personal benefit and loss in both, really has no
idea what she is doing.
A rivalry of ideology: The conflict between North and South Korea
When we talk about the conflict between North and South Korea, we need to go back to the history
of Korean Warin 1950(), which is also a part of the Cold war. During this conflict, there were also
some international power interventions, the United States of America, USSR and PRC were all
get involved to some extend. On June 25, 1950, the troops of Communist Kim II Sung crossed the
dividing line and separate the Korean Peninsula into two separate parts between the South and the
North because of South Korea s constant defiance (). This is also considered as the beginning of
the Korean War as well as pulls the rivalry history of North and South Korea open.

Rudyard Kipling
The Legendary Life of Rudyard Kipling Rudyard Kipling was one of the greatest writers of all
time. He was a gifted writer and a huge celebrity, and has provided us with countless writings
that will continue to be enjoyed by future generations. There are two perspectives when it comes
to Kipling s canonization; those that believe based solely on his writing abilities think he should
be canonized, and those who saw him as an only an outspoken political figure do not. The
questions surrounding his use of a swastika show him to be a possible Nazi sympathizer and curve
his support of canonization. The purpose of this research paper is to provide the insight and the

They settled on the Balestier estate near Brattleboro, Vermont, in the United States, and began
four of the happiest years of Kipling s life. During this time he wrote some of his best work.
(Advameg) They soon had his first child, Josephine, who inspired him to write some of his most
renowned children s literature. The Jungle Book and Rikki Tikki Tavi were by far his most
popular works and are still read by children today. The Jungle Book, published in 1892, was
eventually made into a movie in 1942, and animated by Disney in the 1960 s (Liukkonen). It is
still quite a popular story among children today. The fascination of talking animals and a lost boy
s adventures still exists today. By the time he was 32, he was the highest paid novelist in the
world. Some people relate Kipling with the swastika. Kipling occasionally used the defamed
symbol on the bindings and covers of his books. These people view this as Kipling being a Nazi
sympathizer. This does not seem to be the case. The pre Nazi Swastika was a Hindu symbol of
good luck, which he learned through his father s knowledge of Indian art, but the suspicion still
remains to this day. (Walker) While in the United States, Josephine and Kipling both contracted
pneumonia. Caroline was unable to watch after them both and was forced to care for only one of
them. She chose to take Josephine to a nearby neighbor s house to be nursed back to

The Ethics of Crowdsourcing

Ethics of Crowdsourcing
Crowdsourcing ; Innovation or Exploitation?
Abstract
Crowdsourcing is the concept of mass collaboration of external outsourced tasks typically from an
institution to its community (Howe, 2005). This paper explores the two sides of crowd sourcing;
whether this net enabled community collaboration is accelerating innovation or exploiting the
laborers with menial tasks of little to no benefit through an analysis of Soylent, one of the latest
innovations in crowd sourcing using John Rawls Theory of Justice, the Veil of Ignorance, I aim to
demonstrate how can we all benefit from crowdsourcing and harness the true power of collective

In 1714, the British Government was stuck for a solution to what they called The Longitude
Problem which made sailing difficult and deadly (killing 1,000s of seamen every year) (Thomas,
2011). Inaccurate Longitude charts were causing sailors to be lost at sea, and in some cases people
starved. Seeking innovation, the British Government offered ВЈ20,000 for people to invent a
solution (ВЈ20,000 in 1714 is around $4.7 million dollars in 2010) (Thomas, 2011). Innovative
scientists and sailors came together to formulate information that is more accurate. This is possibly
the first ever example of crowdsourcing; thus, solving the problems for many sailors. The contest
was considered unsolvable by many. John Harrison, the son of a carpenter, won the Longitude
contest. Harrison invented the marine chronometer (i.e. an accurate, vacuum sealed pocket watch)
(Thomas, 2011). His knowledge and brilliance helped solve navigation in the 1700 s. The
aristocrats were hesitant to award Harrison the prize but eventually paid him the ВЈ20,000
(Thomas, 2011). This example of crowdsourcing is a great one because it highlights one of the
principles of crowdsourcing innovation and creativity can come from anywhere (Thomas, 2011). In
the early 18th century, being able to navigate accurately was the difference of returning home or
not. Getting lost on a transoceanic voyage did not just mean that a competing nation could

Infect Influenza Vaccines
When we hear the word virus, we usually think of something that makes us sick. A virus is an
ultramicroscopic infectious organism that, having no independent metabolic activity, can
replicate only within a cell of another host organism. A virus consists of a core of nucleic acid,
either RNA or DNA, surrounded by a coating of antigenic protein and sometimes a lipid layer
surrounds it as well. The viral genome provides the genetic code for replication, and the host cell
provides the necessary energy and raw materials. To fight viruses, we use vaccines. While some
may infect a broad range, other viruses can only infect certain kinds of cells. Vaccines are made of
inactive, dead or weakened viruscells or protein antigens that can no longer infect... Show more

According to Center for Disease Control (CDC), influenza viruses are divided into three types,
designated as A, B, and C. Influenza type C usually only causes either very mild symptoms or no
symptoms at all. Types A and B, however, are responsible for epidemics of respiratory illnesses
that can result in hospitalization, or even death. Influenza is constantly changing over time by
mutations. This continual change allows the virus to evade the antibodies that were meant to
kill it. A host infected with influenza virus develops antibodies against that virus; as the virus
changes, the first antibody no longer recognizes the newer virus and infection can occur because
the host does not recognize the new flu virus as a problem until the infection is well under way.
The first antibody developed may, in some instances, provide partial protection against infection
with a new influenza virus. According to Medicine Net.com, In 2009, almost all individuals had
no antibodies that could recognize the novel H1N1 virus immediately. It quickly spread
throughout the world so fast that the WHO declared this new flu strain (termed novel H1N1
influenza A swine flu). There are currently four main strains of influenza circulating worldwide.
Three of the viruses are type A, and one is type B. Type A viruses are divided into subtypes based
on the differences in two viral proteins called hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). The three
subtypes of influenza A are A(H1N1), A(H3N2), and A(H5N1). The reason for several strands of
type A are because of the two kinds of change influenza A

Hot Topic Essay
1. What makes Hot Topic so successful as a retailer? What makes them so popular with their
employees? How can they keep their success going? Hot Topic as a retailer is so successful
because their culture is based on a passion for a concept (Manning Curtis, 2015, p. 281). They
focus on what is hot at the moment and use people s passion for music as their driving force.
Having employees at an average age of 25 years, helps keep the store and its products young and

How Did Chinese Culture Influence The Wu Wang Dynasty
China is the most ancient nation in history and is considered the leading cultural focal point of East

and a systematic culture. In addition, China has created a powerful cultural existence throughout
their civilization. Chinahas battled and faced conflict of developing a more up to date cultural

Maximizing Performance Appraisal System Acceptance
Employee acceptance is a critical component of an effective performance appraisal system.(1)
Research in organizational behavior clearly demonstrates that employee attitudes influence
behavior,(2) and participant attitudes toward performance appraisal systems are no exception.(3)
The attitudes of system participants play a key role in both the short and long term success of a
performance appraisal system.(4) The goal of this research is to identify the characteristics of
municipal government performance appraisal systems that are associated with perceived employee
acceptance as reported by a national sample of municipal government personnel officials.

This sense of unfairness will be exacerbated if the employee perceives no opportunity to rebut
the information or present his or her views.(16) The task, therefore, becomes developing a
process that cultivates accurate and comprehensive information in a manner that is perceived by
employees as being fair. Leventhal and Greenberg discussed three broad principles that influence
perceived fairness in performance appraisal systems. First, employees should possess the ability
to correct or rebut inaccurate information. Second, that specific procedures should be introduced
to increase the accuracy of performance information (such as performance diaries, comprehensive
rater training, objective performance standards). Third, that procedural safeguards are present to
discourage biased ratings (appeal processes, evaluating the rater on how well they administer the
process). To fully operationalize these principles, a much greater voice and role for the employee
is necessary. What are the preferred means for accomplishing these goals? Employee Voice
Participation, goal setting and feedback are formal means for interjecting employee voice into the
appraisal process. The original definition of employee voice included only participation. Employee
voice is the employees ability to influence the decision making process.(18) Employee participation
is the most common means for operationalizing voice. Participation enables the ratee to express

Abstract
There is diversity of forms of government (Laundy, 1989) and different ways of classifying them
and as such, this paper sets out to discuss the budgetary powers of the legislature under different
forms of government, and the environment that informed the political structures. The paper

The expansion of budgetary control over the rest of the military and into non military areas during
the Eighteenth Century was slow and inconsistent. However, as Parliament became more
accustomed to allocating funds, some modern concepts and terminology began to develop. In 1733
Robert Walpole, Whig Prime Minister under George I, began referring to the inauguration of the
discussions on the Crown s proposed expenditures as the opening of the budget. This convention
continued, and gradually by 1800 this usage was universally accepted in England.
In France a conscious effort to make government rational was initiated. Following the lead of the
Philosophers during the Age of Reason, and eager to replace the medieval traditions of the ancient
regime, the French introduced sweeping changes to their government and society during the reign
of Napoleon.
As with the English, except with different motives, Napoleon s first concern was with mastering the
military budget. To obtain better information on, and to control expenditures, he established a
Corps des Comptes. The general who headed this corps became,

Six Steps In Conflict Resolution
Conflicts in intimate relationships subsist inevitable. Despite the degree to which individuals stand
alike, differences in opinions and beliefs will transpire. This chapter taught me that it does not stand
as the topic of disagreement that retains importance, but rather the way in which the couple resolves
the conflict. According the text, six steps exist to aid in conflict resolution; The steps are: (1)
clarifying the issue; (2) finding out what each person wants; (3) identifying various alternatives;
(4) deciding how to negotiate; (5) solidifying agreements; and (6) reviewing and renegotiating
(Olson, DeFrain, Skogrand, 2014, p. 154). Upon reading the descriptions and facts, I find these six
steps to rest highly effective and imperative to conflict resolution. When a disagreement emerges,
couples tend to play the blame game, ignore their parent s perspective, and explore for a quick
solution. While it stands evident that these behaviors do not persist effective, these six steps
provide a solution. Although I do find these six steps to exist accurate, I cannot guarantee how
realistic they stand. Just as any other process, to remain realistic, the steps require two individuals
who value their relationships and desire its continuation. This process requires individuals to not
only voice their opinion, but also to clarify, identify, and negotiate this issue at hand. These steps
will not occur with ease or speed, but they will sanction for the complete resolution of

Figurative Language And Symbolism In Sailing The Byzantium
Literature is always personal, always one man s vision of the world, one man s experience (W.B.
Yeats n.d.). Such perspicacity is evident in the works of William Butler Yeats, whose collection of
poetry, The Tower, reflects his fascination with mysticism and the days of yore. The poem Sailing
the Byzantium illustrates how William Butler Yeats
use of artistic diction and symbolism reveals the
parallels of ancient civilization and the cycle of life and communicates the dual themes of
obsolescence and perpetuity. Yeats elegy, details a metaphoric spiritual journey of renewal to the
holy city seeking intellectual refuge within an artifice of eternity (Yeats, Lines 16,24). His use of
figurative language elicits both the somber and nostalgic tones evident throughout the poem.
Metaphorically, the speaker emphasizes the theme of obsolescence by alluding to his own physical
limitations and concern for his own mortality living in a country unfit for old men among... Show

Modernist poet, William Butler Yeats, use of figurative language and symbolism expresses his

empyrean wisdom and intervention, he emerges from the gyre...an artifice of eternity (Line 19,

Ignorance, Ignorance And Ignorance
According to Mark Lilla s Ignorance and Bliss , The source of the proverb Ignorance is Bliss is a
poem by the 18th century English poet Thomas Gray, who wrote in passing: Where ignorance is
bliss/ Tis folly to be wise (Lilla). At the time the proverb was referring to the Enlightenment and
Christianity s glorification of blind faith, and its renunciation of both scientific reason and
philosophical inquiry; however, today, it can be interpreted as whether or not man has the ability to
maintain happinessin the midst of unhappiness. Is ignorancereally bliss? Can it serve as a way to
avoid anxieties, or would repression of issues only lead to more dissatisfaction? Webster s
dictionary defines ignorance as lack of knowledge, education, or awareness. However, it can
also be seen as a refusal to acknowledge information. Bliss is defined as complete happiness.
Does the idea of ignorance is bliss really hold true? Can happiness be a byproduct of a lack of
knowledge and awareness, or the flat out refusal to acknowledge? The people of Omelas seemed
to have achieved that. The townspeople of Omelas live in a prosperous Utopian town where
everyone is happy, but in order to maintain their way of life a child must be subjected to inhuman
treatment and suffering, They all know it is there, all the people of Omelas...[T]hey all understand
that their happiness...depends wholly on this child s abominable misery (Le Guin). How can they

What Women and Islam Have in Common Essay
What Women and Islam Have in Common
What do women and Islam have in common? Besides the stereotyped images that each suffers from
individually, the status of women in Islam is one of the most extremely misunderstood and
incorrectly portrayed things in western society. We can investigate why this is so later. First, a brief
introduction to the actual status of women in Islam is in order.
Before discussing issues pertinent to the social status of women, consider the original creation of
the woman as portrayed by the Quoran (the Islamic holy book) which does not subscribe to the
view that Eve was created from the crooked rib of Adam and thus is of inferior status: O
humankind, be conscious of your Sustainer who has created you out ... Show more content on

Islam has also ensured the woman s right to remarry pending a three month refrainment period.
As for social rights, Islam has always recognized the prominent role that women play in society.
They are given the freedom to pursue any profession including political positions. Both in the
past and present day, women in Islamic societies have reached political heights unparalleled in
the most advanced western nations. Even in the earliest day of Islam, Aysha, the daughter of the
prophet, lead an army of 30,000 soldiers. Currently, women lead two Islamic countries: Benazir
Bhutto has served as the prime minister of Pakistan since 1988 and has been a strong and
remarkable leader. Turkey is also headed by a Muslim woman, Tansu Ciller, who was elected the
prime minister in 1993. Here in the U.S., we still have never had a female president and the
outlook doesn t look too good either.
Those are just a few of the facts. Why then is Islam portrayed as a religion that oppresses women
and puts them in a position inferior to men? Part of that is certainly due to the stereotyped image
of how Islamic women are portrayed in western media as an extension of Islam bashing. A
prominent example is the movie Not Without My Daughter in which scores of false and fictitious
depictions were made of women in an Islamic country. It is also true, however, that in many so
called Islamic countries, women are not treated according to their God given rights. But this

Hospital physicians and staff must be educated on the necessary changes and the revised process

UP.01.03.01 requires a time out before the start of the procedure. The Site Identification and

Analysis Of Being Mortal
Being Mortal was an interesting book, it poses some very good questions, such as living
independent as a senior, which identifies the desire of most elderly people, to be able to have the
freedom to choose how and where they re going to live. As pictured in the book, some of the
facilities that seniors are living in do not encourage independent living, or freedom of choice.
Honestly, in some facilities people do die quicker, not from illness, but lost of purpose. As people
age, learning to except their limitations and physical changes may not be easy; trying to adjust

Should medicine intervene in the delay of a person dying when they have a terminal disease, or

that medicine exists to fight death and disease, and that is, of course, its most basic task. Death is

They learn to be patient, listen, and follow directions. Lastly, Simon Says helps the child exercise

Federal Bureau Of Investigations And The United Nations...
The following essay examines the definitions of organized crime from the Federal Bureau of
Investigations and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Furthermore, the research
examines how the two definitions relate to or are applicable to the Medellin Cartel of Columbia
led by Pablo Escobar. In addition, this essay provides an analysis of Columbia s social climate
during Escobar s reign and its contribution to his outlaw sense of social justice. Furthermore, this
essay inspects the real Escobar against his self image, how he signed his death warrant with the
CIA/DEA and how his weaknesses were discovered then used against him resulting in the collapse
of his organization and his expiration.

These two definitions relate to and are applicable to Escobar who organized and led the Medellin
cartel of Columbia. Escobar aligned himself with an extensive network of individuals each duty
bound to handle a majority of his affairs. This network was divided into subgroups, each delegated
to their special assigned category that included, but not limited to, finances, social, military,
personal, family, public, economic, political, law enforcement, and the media. These groups and
sub groups in return received an unlimited amount of resources to handle affairs and protection
from authorities or anyone attempting to interfere or disrupt their business. By creating several
branches to facilitate his organization, this permitted his growth in influence and dominance. Each
group separately handled his outlets which afforded him the opportunity to succeed in many ways,
but ultimately resulted in failure as he became a distracted, confused, and disoriented leader. His
organization was large, but through his own mistakes or missteps the organization was dismantled
further contributing to his expiration. The organization was largely controlled by money and
through violence. On a large scale, the organization stretched out from his country to other
countries that was well controlled allowing for enormous profits and great power. Escobar sought
compliance in every form and by any means necessary.

Charlie Strong Character Analysis
As the kick off to the college football season rapidly approaches, the start of a new era is ready
to get underway in Austin, Texas. The Longhorns finished the season 8 5 last year, with a rough
beginning that saw the firing of Defensive Coordinator Manny Diaz by the second game of the
season. The team came together midseason to put together a string of victories during conference
play, including a surprise upset of the 14 point favorite Oklahoma Sooners. The season ended on a
bad note with embarrassing losses to conference rivals Oklahoma State and Baylor and with an
awful performance in the Alamo Bowl against Oregon.
After 16 years of coaching the Longhorn football program, Head Coach Mack Brown, a man that
won it all in 2005 and nearly won it all again in 2009, gives up the reigns to Coach Charlie Strong.

Lamont Symphony Orchestra performed three beautiful sets of music that was conducted by
Ryan Kozak with Hisham Bravo Groover, Assistant Conductors and Lawrence Golan being the
Music Director and Conductor at Denver University on Thursday, November 17, 2016 in June
Swaner Concert Hall at 7:30pm. Kozak conducted all three of the of the pieces; Danse Macabre Op
40 by Camille Saint SaГ«ns (1835 to 1921), Isle of the Dead, Op. 29 by Sergei Rachmaninoff
which is my favorite out of all three pieces (1873 to 1943), and Symphony No. 5, Op. 107 by Felix
Mendelssohn (1809 to 1847). Walking into the concert hall I was flabbergasted. The size of the
room just amazed me and the stage was fantastic to say the least. Made me more excited for the
show to start! As I sat down in my seat I noticed all the types of people in the concert hall were
dressed in many different sets of attire. Elderly people were better dressed with their suits and
dresses and pant suits where the younger people in the concert hall were still nicely dressed but
were a little more casual. After what seemed like forever the lights finally began to go dim and I
knew the show was about to start. In the first piece, Saint SaГ«ns, setting of the poem, the solo
violin represents the devil who is playing his fiddle for the dance. The dance begins at the stroke
of midnight in a graveyard. The harp begins the work with 12 strokes,

Job Automation Advantages
One of the biggest controversies with the advancement of artificial intelligence is the debate on
job automation. Many people believe that artificial intelligence will advance to become better
than humans and replace humans in most jobs. The opposite belief is that AI will be used to
improve the standard of living and will be a tool to support humans, not replace them. Job
automation has many benefits such as performing more dangerous jobs and complete tasks that
humans do not desire to do. Even though job automation has benefits, there are many people who
believe robots will take over the job market and the unemployment rate will skyrocket. There are
multiple supporting factors for each side of the job automation debate, but the argument will never
be settled until AI is further advanced and utilized. The main key points of the side that support
the advancement of job automation is that AI will improve the standard of living, lower the prices
of products, and encourage people to get higher education. As job automation progresses, so does
the standard of living. The largest sector of the job industry that will be affected by job automation
is the service sector, manufacturing, and many other jobs that do not require higher education.
Since robots will replace these lower paying jobs that do not require much skill, the quality of life
will increase. One negative effect is that there are numerous people that hold these positions in the
lower paying industry that will lose

Religious Views On Abortion
Religious Views of Abortion Throughout many years, abortion has been a topic of wide discussion
and multiple different views. By definition abortion is the deliberate termination of a human
pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy . The two most
commonly used phrases or titles that people use to describe their view on abortionwould be: pro life
or pro choice . Those considered pro life believe that human life is created at the moment of
fertilization and is, thus, entitled to the same legal protections as any other human being (Crutcher,
2016). They believe that life is much more important especially in cases like abortion and
euthanasia. For those that are pro choice, believe that it is the choice... Show more content on

From their teachings to their mediation, it has always taught or practiced peace. Just like the
religions mentioned above, Hindus oppose abortion. Even from the Hindu scriptures mention
abortion, but it is more commonly referred to as garha batta also known as womb killing . In
India they have specific laws that state if the mother is in any harm or any risks that could cause
her life threatening issues during up to twenty weeks of her pregnancy, then abortion can be
performed. A Hindu believes in choosing and deciding the practice that will cause no harm to the
mother, unborn child, and to the society. The main teaching of Hinduism is ahisma or non violence.
Basically, Hindus believe that violence does not solve anything, which is very true. Abortion can be
seen as harm to the mother and of course to the fetus. Considering that is it practically murder,
you can definitely see the reason why they are opposed to it. Even the most historical and
inspirational Hindu Gandhi, who is a non violence activist, has said: It seems to me as clear as
daylight that abortion would be a crime . Looking back at the Hindu scriptures, it is very clear to
see that this issue has been mentioned before. A Hindu text has even compared abortion as similar
to killing a priest. Another text also said that committing abortion can be compared to killing one s
parents. There is an issue in India where the

There are two basic principles that a system can be...
There are two basic principles that a system can be approached by; the continuous matter or
modular approach and the discrete matter or lumped mass approach (Holroyd, 2007). Generally,
when a mass can be defined as a rigid body or, in other words, when a system have a finite
number of degrees of freedom, it is more efficient to be modeled as a discrete (lumped parameter
system). On the other hand, when a mass is non uniform or, in other words, when a system have an
infinite number of degrees of freedom (e.g. because it includes continuous elastic members), it is
best to be modeled as a continuous (distributed parameter system). Furthermore, there are hybrid
models which combine lumped and distributed parameters and provide more realistic... Show more

However, the behaviour and interaction of individual components of an electromechanical system
is not possible to be examined with lumped parameter models. Finally, lumped parameter models
require modifications in their whole lumped model when changes in any system component occur.
As already mentioned, distributed (modularized) models are solved by a set of partial differential
equations due to all the dependent variables consist of more than one independent variable.
However, these equations can be homogeneous or non homogenous (inhomogeneous) equations. In
practice, the solution of a homogeneous equation with the appropriate boundary conditions
illustrates the behavior of the system after it has been properly set in motion and then subject to no
further force. In addition to this, the solution depicts the trend of the system to vibrate at a number
of natural frequencies. On the contrary, the solution of a non homogeneous equation depicts the
behavior of the system to specific forces (Holroyd, 2007). The forced damped method can be used
for solving the non homogeneous equation of motion. According to this method, the steady state
response to exciting forces is calculated by transfer matrices. Moreover, this method uses fewer
elements than the lumped mass approach in order to create a realistic model. This method contains
terms which are dependent on frequency, thus it requires the

Memory Psychology
Memory
One of the human functions that is intriguing to me and makes people unique from each other is
human memory. I am finding that through experiences and what we remember from those
experiences, our brain develops and humans form their interpretation of the world and the things
around them based on their memory. Our favorite films and the ones we dislike the most are part
of the many things that we draw our conclusions from based on memory. Knowing this can help
me create more dynamic characters in my scripts because I can better form characters based on
their memory. Whether it be the style the cinematographer might have in his or her shot choice or
simply the action that is present on the screen, memory of these aspects allows me ... Show more

The way that I view a solution like this is taking the easy way out. It seems for no matter what
condition you are going through in this country, there is nobody to sit and help you through a
situation besides a bottle of pills. I don t know what should happen exactly as a solution, but if
we know that weaker emotion equals weaker memories than why can t a psychiatrist work with
patients in doing what they are hoping the pill can do? I m personally apathetic in this area of
study, but I feel strongly against the use of pills so regularly.
Flashbulb memories are a clear memory of an emotionally significant moment or event. This is
intriguing to me how this works, but it most certainly is true. I have talked with friends recently
that I grew up with through grade school and we had one of those moments where I started a
conversation off with, Remember that one time we were out on the playground and a guy was
walking around outside with a shotgun and we had to go inside on lockdown? Of course they all
remember that day and specific and minute things that happened during that time because of
flashbulb memory.
After reading the chapter on memory I have become more aware on how the mind remembers
things. I always told myself growing up that studying things I already knew was completely
pointless, but it turns out that you are still learning just by continuing to review. I am going to have

Photography And Its Effects On Impressionism
Photography and its Effects on Impressionism Dakota Saunders Rewind roughly back to the
1860 s. Several apprentice painters, namely Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley,
and FrГ©dГ©ric Bazille learned that they did not share the same views of the AcadГ©mie des
Beaux Arts. The Academy believed that mythological and historical scenes for painting was
vastly superior to that of still life and landscape scenes. The AcadГ©mie des Beaux Arts would
run an art show, the Salon de Paris, which was the only way for an artist during that time to gain
prestige, commissions, and of course money. The Salon would only accept paintings which
were in their approved style, which was based on the art of the old masters. Since the art of these
young painters did not conform to the standards put forth by the AcadГ©mie des Beaux Arts,
their art was mostly rejected until Emperor Napoleon III settled to allow the public to judge the
submitted art themselves. The Salon des RefusГ©s was created just for this purpose. The results
of the new Salon were such; While many viewers came only to laugh, the Salon des RefusГ©s
drew attention to the existence of a new tendency in art and attracted more visitors than the regular
Salon. (Denvir, pg. 194). Louis Leroy wrote a disparaging review on Monet s work, Impression,

Jim Heynen s What Happened During The Ice Storm
Janaya Prout
Quick and Calm
Jim Heynen describes, How beautiful! People said when things outside started to shine with ice.
But the freezing rain kept coming. The story, What Happened During the Ice Storm by Jim
Heynen, is about farm boys going to collect pheasants in the middle of a raging ice storm. Every
animal was safe except for the pheasants. They were frozen in place along the fence and could not
see anything through the ice. After a careful analysis of the story, the reader can understand the
theme, how people act in challenging situations, and human nature through imagery, diction, and
figurative language.
Heynen uses a lot of imagery throughout his story so people can visualize how the storm is
affecting the farm boys in the situation. The narrator explains, Things around them were shining
and dripping with icy rain (Heynen). The icy rain makes it more difficult to concentrate on how
to handle the situation. Upon their arrival to the fence, the boys can see how the storm has taken
a toll on the birds. The narrator states, Some of them lifted their heads and turned them from side
to side, but they were blindfolded with ice and didn t flush (Heynen). The birds could not see
anything due to ice covering their eyes. The pheasants were covered in a sheet of ice. As the reader

The author could have easily used plain words to tell the story, but he did not. To describe the

gives the illusion that the ice was hitting them in little sharp pieces. Heynen also uses gelatin
whites. Gelatin means translucent so Heynen says that it is see through whites. Last, he uses
clinging to show how the ice is sticking to their skin and is not coming off. As a result, Heynen

District 9 Movie Analysis
District 9 (Peter Jackson, 2009), a science п¬Ѓction п¬Ѓlm produced by Peter Jackson, is a rare

established via a mix of standard third person camera and documentary footage and takes place in
the present a twist from your regular science п¬Ѓction п¬Ѓlm which normally takes place in the
future. The п¬Ѓlm, about a colony of alien refugees forced by humans to live in a South African

those who are different from us. The metaphors of science п¬Ѓction are being used to portray the

This scene is indescribably chaotic. While operating alien weaponry, Wikis is leading Christopher
back to the mothership by protecting him through killing of any humans in their way. Wikus is the
п¬Ѓlm s hero.
The end of the п¬Ѓlm leaves us with questions unanswered. We dont know if Wikus will ever
п¬Ѓnd his way back to his old life as a human among other humans. The last scene shows Wikus
fully transformed into an alien, building a flower out of scrap metal. Is Wikus more at home now
than he has ever been as a human?
In producing District 9, Jackson s intention was to address racism as an ideology by forcing the
viewers to be the racist. At the beginning of the п¬Ѓlm, when we are introduced to the aliens that
reside in District 9, we immediately despise them. The Prawns themselves exhibit human like
characteristics (ie. two arms, two legs, stand up right) but also exhibit grotesque characteristics. The
aliens are п¬Ѓlthy,
violent and vulgar as we catch them consistently using foul language. They live in a slum that is
decaying, crumbling and full of garbage, not by choice, but forced by humans. The aliens are
ostracized and barred from most businesses and those humans who live in near proximity to the
aliens want more distance. They are the enemy. We are also introduced to the Nigerians who
barter with the Prawns for weaponry in exchange for cat food. The Nigerians have a witch doctor
who advises them to eat the aliens, which they do. We also learn

The Sunni-Shia Divide
Introduction
Islam is a monotheistic religion that started in Arabia (1). It was founded by the prophet
Muhammad and during the first century of its creation, it spread throughout Arabia and beyond
(12). Muslims believe that Muhammad saw visions of the angel Gabriel telling him the of the
wisdoms of God. Today, Islamis the second largest religion in the world and just like other major
world religions, there are divisions that exist in Islam. What must be the most significant division is
the division between the Sunnis and the Shiites.
What caused the split and their claims to legitimacy
Islam was founded by Muhammad and during his life, he was able to gain many followers, even
conquering the city of Mecca from which fled because of prosecution (1). Because of the zeal of

The centuries old Sunni Shia divide is exacerbated by contemporary concerns over power,
freedom and equality (8). Many Sunni countries are prejudiced against Shiites and at the same
time, are scared of Shiism spreading. Sunni dominated governments such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt,
and Jordan have worked to keep Shiites and Sunnis divided and specifically, to keep Shia
subjugated (8,9). For example, the government of Saudi has worked to build a network of
mosques, seminaries, schools, and writers that emphasize Sunni identity (8). In Algeria, the
minister of education dismissed teachers in the fear that they were spreading Shiism. The Sunni s
fear of Shia spreading that it controls even the potential of Shiism to spread makes the divide
even bigger and has caused anti Shia propaganda with renewed virulence (9,11). The prejudice that
Sunnis hold against Shiites is illustrated in this example. A man who was to give a guest lecture in
Pakistan on Sunni Shia relations told a group of Muslim professors, when asked, that he was
Christian. One of them replied, Well at least you re not Shia

The Importance Of A Parent s Involvement
The Importance of Child Development A child s success in life is directly linked to how they
developed as a child. There are many aspects that go into child development. Experiences,
environments, as well as how they reach developmental milestones play a huge role in the
overall shaping of the child. If a child is deprived of these important developments, their hope for
a normal, rewarding life is very slim. In my experience as a mother I have found that being
involved in helping my daughter reach her developmental goals has been very rewarding for the
both of us. The importance of a parent s involvement in reaching these milestones is almost
immeasurable. Simple things, such as stacking blocks with your child can have a dramatic effect
on their development. Months before I had my daughter I researched all kinds of methods and
activities to do with her to encourage her development. There are four major components of child
developmentthat are imperative to the child s future. Physical, emotional, social and cognitive
development are four types of development essential to a properly developed child. Physical
development is the foundation of basic physical skills such as walking, running, holding a pencil
and shaking hands. There are two main components of physical development that include fine
motor skillsand gross motor skills. An example of a fine motor skillis when a child learns how to tie
their shoe, or a baby picks up a small object with their fingers. I have

is longer than a certain amount of time. Although most states require a unanimous verdict, most
people disagree. In my opinion every verdict must be unanimous. There are various reasons why
verdicts should be unanimous. I believe that the main reason is when jurors give the wrong
verdict. In many criminal cases the verdict isn t always the right one. For example, in some cases
the accused is said to be innocent and in reality they are guilty.... Show more content on

The other result is that the criminal continues to commit crimes. This is a very big issue if the
criminal was accused for murder. If a murderer was set free, they might want to kill other people.
In other cases, the accused is said to be guilty, and in reality they are innocent. In this case there
could also be two results. If the accused was said to be guilty, they have to serve their time.
Depending on how bad the crime was, the accused might go to jail forever. In some parts of the
world, the criminal might get the death penalty. Maybe ten years later, someone might go back
to the case and prove that the criminal wasn t guilty. If someone disproved the guilty verdict,
they might release the criminal. Even if they release the victim, they still had to suffer through
years of prison. On the other hand, if the criminal received the death penalty, there is no way of
bring said person back to life. In the case of Twelve Angry Men the nineteen year old boy was
said to be innocent. Juror number eight says that the boy is innocent and gives a variety of
reasons. He states, He s nineteen years old. Since the boy was innocent he had to be set free. If we
were guilty, then it

Ecotourism, Tourism, and Development in Mexico Essay
Ecotourism, Tourism, and Development in Mexico
The issue of growth in the travel industry how much, how fast, what kind is crucial to the future of
communities, local lifestyles and cultures, and the natural environment. There are a variety of
instabilities and inequities associated with the expansion of tourism. If the social costs of infinite
growth (human consequences of ecological pollution, centralized concentration of power,
inequitable income distribution) are as high as they appear to be, our current social systems cannot
support such growth indefinitely. Tourism remains a passive luxury for thousands of travelers. This
must change (Rethinking Tourism and Ecotravel by Deborah McLaren, 1998, p. 6).
In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While these activities are most intimately tied to the environment, it is important to recognize that
any tourist activity necessarily impacts the environment, and any development that supports
tourism and travel has environmental consequences. We found that the ocean, reef, fish, beach,
mangroves, jungle, ancient and contemporary Mayan culture, and drinking water are all being
drastically effected. We will examine the problems and what can be done to increase
environmentally ethical (eco)tourism, which could be considered tourism that focuses on
experiencing and learning about the nonhuman and human aspects of a place while critically
examining the effects of one s individual actions and the combined effects of one s role as part of a
group.
Our study area stretched from Cancun (the northeast tip of the Yucatan Peninsula) southward along
the Carribean coast as far south as Akumal (although development has went far beyond there.
Cancun is a city of 455,000 or more people and is the second largest (behind Merida) on the
Peninsula. Most of the development and jobs in Cancun (and the rest of the coast) is in direct
support of tourism, from the airport to the restaurants, from the hotels to the street vendors. The
town of Puerto Morelos, where we spent most of our time, is twenty minutes south of Cancun and
has turned into a quiet

Bildungsroman In A Separate Peace
The quintessential element behind John Knowles s A Separate Peace is one of complex growth
through a personal journey, acknowledged as a bildungsroman. A bildungsroman is a story of
formation, where the main character or characters face their demons. In other words, the novel
follows a coming of age tale where a journey of maturity whether emotional, psychological, or
social involves many events leading to the final personal analysis of which the main character
accepts. These concepts were highly present within the storyline of A Separate Peace, and they
follow the development of the main character, Gene Forrester. Throughout the conflicts that
occurred, Gene slowly transitioned into a new mindset that can be dissected in order to
understand the cause of his life altering experiences. As he arrived to the Devon school, an all
boys private academy in New Hampshire, Gene began a new chapter in his life. He sought out for
new friends, a new academic lifestyle, and an apprenticeship to life in preparation for the future. At
this point, the journey of spiritual reflection had begun. Phineas nicknamed Finny ... Show more

Soon enough, Finny introduced another example of his daring charisma; the Super Suicide
Society of the Summer Session. The ritual of this new club involved the gesture of jumping off
of a tree branch in a river. The members were recruited by Finny, who established this society
after jumping off of the branch for the first time, followed by Gene, who had been dared by
Phineas to attempt this. Having completed this ritual many times during the session, it became
second nature every time the group of boys got together. Gene could tell that Finny absolutely
loved it. No matter what Gene was doing which was mostly homework Finny had insisted on his
company down to the river. Gene became irked by this, day after

The Spherical Image as the Central Paradox in...
The Spherical Image as the Central Paradox in Valediction: for Weeping
In John Donne s A Valediction: for Weeping, the speaker consoles his lover before leaving on a sea
voyage and begs her not to cry. Crying, the speaker tells his lover this poem at the docks before he
boards his ship going abroad. Donne uses a spherical image as the central metaphor in his poem.
When Donne uses irony, paradox, and hyperbole including the use of round images such as: coins,
globes, and tears he strengthens the spherical conceit. By comparing two seeming opposites like
tears and love as his conceit, Donne uses the spherical image as the central paradox in A
Valediction: Of Weeping.
Donne opens the poem with the speaker ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fruit and the emblem are round images describing their tears, the emblem symbolizes both
the literal round image and the lover s face (the tear bears her emblem or face). As the tear
bearing her image falls, the speaker fears the ending of their love if she cries, as the speaker
states: So thou and I are nothing then, when on a diverse shore (9). In the second stanza, the
speaker tries to convince her that they are still together, even when they are separated, and begs her
not to weep.
The second stanza opens with a ball image forming out of nothing into a globe. A worker can
take a round ball . . .and quickly make that, which was nothing, all (12). The globe and their love
represent all, because the globe represents all of the entire world, where as, the love
encompasses all of their individual worlds or spheres. They, the lovers, have their own worlds, and
like in The Good Morrow their two worlds become one, where the power of love binds the two
hemispheres (in The Good Morrow ) or globes (in A Valediction:

Japanese Internment Camps Dbq Essay
More than 110,000 Japanese Americans living on the west coast of the United States were forced
and placed into internment camp. Many believe that the internment camps were necessary for
national defense. Conversely, I believe that the actions taken place at time of war were unnecessary
and racist acts. Throughout this paper, I will discuss how and why the removal of the Japanese
Americans was uncalled for and harsh, while addressing the counterpoint. The first reason I believe
that the Internment camps were despotic is that for other war like situations, no actions this harsh
were taken. In paragraph two of the second article it says, War makes for harsh measures, notes the
historian Cary McWilliams, but we cannot justify the evacuation even as a war measure. No such
measure was taken against German or Italian nationals. This quote shows that the internment camps
were brutal and unnecessary, as the Germans and Italians had no such measures even close as
severe as the Japanese Americans. On no degree were the consequences fair to the Japanese
Americans as other nationals did not experience such astringent ramifications.... Show more content

In paragraph three of the second article, it says, In fact, more than 25,000 Japanese Americans
served in armed forces during World War II, and the all Japanese American 442nd combat team
inflicted more casualties and received more decorations than any other comparable army unit. This
shows that the Japanese Americans were actually defending America and fighting for the country
rather than disseminating confidential information to the enemies. Due to the help and support
given by the Japanese Americans, the Americans should have been more considerate in their
decisions made at war

Nicole Brown-Simpson Case Study
On June 13, 1994 Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were found stabbed to death
outside the Simpson home. The murders would start a chain reaction into what would be known as
the Trial of the Century and become the most watched trial on national television. The prosecution
chose to file this case in Los Angeles instead of Santa Monica, where the crimewas committed, due
to a poll that was taken where Caucasians believed Simpson was guilty and African Americans
believed he was not guilty. Three months after the murders the jury pool started with 250 potential
jurors with the judge, the prosecuting and defending lawyers and OJ himself.
Potential jurors had to complete a 79 page questionnaire answering questions such as How do you
feel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These questions were used to see if any of these potential jurors were prejudiced against the case,
their own personal opinions were put into play. In order for the jury to be selected, jurors could
not have any personal opinions against the defendant or the case itself. It was found out that
African American females didn t like Nicole Brown Simpson and might be on edge around the
prosecutor, who was a female. After many tests and even reviews of the jurors (body language,
their answers during the questionnaires, etc.) the twelve jurors were selected on November 3; they
were 8 African Americans, 2 Hispanics, 1 half Caucasian, half Native American and a Caucasian
female along with 15 alternates for backups.
I think the voir dire was very helpful in this particular case. The judge believed that many jurors
were lying just to be a part of the case and even insisted on having the potential jurors take a
polygraph test. One of the lawyers thought that this might be offensive to some so they chose not
to. Having OJ Simpson within reach during the voir dire was really helpful because that way the
lawyers can judge how a person will act or behave during the trial. The lawyers quickly found out
that African American women didn t like Nicole Brown Simpson because they thought she was
using her husband for money and

Outsourced
PART A
Intentional marketing: International marketing is the process of planning and under taking
transactions across national boundaries that involve exchange. Outsourcing is a film directed by
Jeff coat. A comedy talks of conflict between cultures and the romantic era. It revolves around the
American Indian culture. In the film, you can see the characters deal with the issue of outsourcing
by exploring the differences between the American and Indian culture. In dealing with the
current trend of outsourcing, outsourcing captures not only the lives of the new India, but also
from the newly globalized world and the importance of understanding between cultures. It also
does a wonderful job of presenting the beauty of India s cultural and slip for many Americans to
travel to such a different and exotic cultures and experiencing culture shock.. So, here goes a
little inspiration from the film. Cultural shock and personal experiences major pass in the film
was based largely on the experiences of John himself during his time abroad. It deals with the
issue of outsourcing as well. Otherwise, it would have been very easy for filmmakers to fall back
to the stereotypes while pinning and shoot this film. Instead, they did a very impressive job of
capturing a good and realistic snapshot of

Theme Of The Poem 1958 By Gwendolyn Mcewen
In the poem 1958, Gwendolyn MacEwen describes the high school environment as it would have
been in the late 1950 s. Popular fads among the teenagers during this era are explored in detail. The
prevailing theme throughout the text pertains to the idea of belonging. The poem focuses primarily
on the desire teenagers have to fit in. Throughout this response I will explore the ways in which
this poem differs and relates to the high schoolenvironment today. Secondly I will analyze the
connections between this poem and a modern day movie. Lastly, I will express the ways in
which my personal experiences relate to the central message in the poem. Several elements of
the high school environment during the late 1950 s still exist today. The author mentions that,
those guys spoke in crazy cryptic monosyllables . This statement is still relevant today; however
teenage boys now speak in a form of speech referred to as gangster slang . Typical words include
sup or peace which are used to express phrases such as how are you? or see you later. In the poem
McEwen says that, those girls said nothing and were mean and cracked gum . Mean girls still
continue to grace the school hallways glaring at those more vulnerable. These girls tend to be the
masterminds behind vicious rumours that spread like wildfire throughout the school. McEwen
mentions that the boys learned shop and the girls sewed shaky seams in the dresses they would
never wear. This statement

The Effects Of Different Types Of Carbon Taxes On The...
Introduction
This paper examines the effects of different types of carbon taxes on the market share of different
electricity generation technologies, particularly between renewable and fossil fuel generators. The
Global Change Assessment Model (GCAM) was used for this analysis because it includes detailed
representations of the technologies in the electricity sector. Given a constraint on emissions or a
certain carbon tax, GCAM will determine the least cost methods of supplying energy in different
sectors. We found that the share of low carbon generation will increase as the carbon tax increases
and the share of renewables generally increases with the implementation of a carbon tax.
Additionally, the timing of renewable market share ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
GCAM is a dynamic recursive model that utilizes a solution algorithm that is based on a market
equilibrium. It consists of three core modules: a) Energy, b) Agriculture and land use, and c) Model
for Assessment of Greenhouse gas Induced Climate Change (MAGICC). Regional population and
labor productivity growth assumptions drive the energy and land use systems employing numerous
technology options (JGCRI, n.d.). The GDP is a simple labor productivity model with an energy
GDP feedback elasticity (JGCRI, 2014). Technology change is modeled using an autonomous
energy efficiency index (AEEI) parameter.
The choice of generation mix of technologies in GCAM is based on a logit model, which includes
the relative cost, logit exponents, and share weights of each technology. The logit approach controls
the distribution of market share between technologies or fuels in response to price changes as
represented by equation (1).
(1) Share(i) =swi .Ci iswi .Ci where Ciis the cost of the ith technology, swiis the share weight of ith
technology and is the logit exponent. A high valued logit exponent means that technology s market
shares are more responsive to changes in costs. The share weights are calibrated parameters based

The Death Of The Khmer Rouge Party Leader, Pol Pot Seized...
From the time humans began to exist in this world, hatred seemed to be a superior attribute that
one comes accustomed to. This inevitable emotion has the ability to provoke people to engage in
acts without thinking; but it is the acts that are premeditated that should be be classified as evil
and brutal. This appalling endeavor is known as genocide, the deliberate destruction of a particular
national, racial or religious group. Between the years of 1975 and 1979, the Khmer Rougeparty
leader, Pol Pot seized power of Cambodiaand forced civilians of urban regions into rural lands for
labor in order to build his own agrarian utopia. Over the course of these four years, the
Cambodians and other minor ethnic groups suffered through labor camps, starvation, and torture
which all led up to their demise. As a result of these mass killings, the country s population
depleted by over 20 percent in just a few years. The country went through hardship during and
even before the genocide began including wars, torment, and considerable numbers of deaths.
Cambodia is a country located within Southeast Asia and is bordered by the countries of Thailand,
Laos, and Vietnam. After being a French protectorate for nearly a century, on 9 November 1953,
Cambodia regained its full independence. The population was over seven million and the country
was ruled by a monarch with Prince Sihanouk as Head of State. However, this happiness was short

  • 2. Women During The Kenyan Emergency Of The 1950 s In order to explain the significance of women during the Kenyan Emergency of the 1950 s, Millicent Whitemore composed a powerful argument that highlighted the importance that women played in the Mau Mau Movement against the British colonial government. By contrasting the traditional views of women with the critical roles they played during the conflict, Whitemore showed just how incredibly important women were in the Movement. With the use of an abundance of sources and firsthand accounts, Whitemore created not only a credible and valid argument, but also a more convincing and persuading one as well. As such, the author has developed and formed an effective argument highlighting the importance of women during the Mau Mau movement with the strong ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hence like all leftover problems of the ages past, it is complicated by nature. A rivalry of ideology: The conflict between North and South Korea When we talk about the conflict between North and South Korea, we need to go back to the history of Korean Warin 1950(), which is also a part of the Cold war. During this conflict, there were also some international power interventions, the United States of America, USSR and PRC were all get involved to some extend. • 4. Rudyard Kipling The Legendary Life of Rudyard Kipling Rudyard Kipling was one of the greatest writers of all time. He was a gifted writer and a huge celebrity, and has provided us with countless writings that will continue to be enjoyed by future generations. There are two perspectives when it comes to Kipling s canonization; those that believe based solely on his writing abilities think he should be canonized, and those who saw him as an only an outspoken political figure do not. The questions surrounding his use of a swastika show him to be a possible Nazi sympathizer and curve his support of canonization. They settled on the Balestier estate near Brattleboro, Vermont, in the United States, and began four of the happiest years of Kipling s life. During this time he wrote some of his best work. (Advameg) They soon had his first child, Josephine, who inspired him to write some of his most renowned children s literature. The Jungle Book and Rikki Tikki Tavi were by far his most popular works and are still read by children today. The Jungle Book, published in 1892, was eventually made into a movie in 1942, and animated by Disney in the 1960 s (Liukkonen). It is still quite a popular story among children today. The fascination of talking animals and a lost boy s adventures still exists today. By the time he was 32, he was the highest paid novelist in the world. Some people relate Kipling with the swastika. Kipling occasionally used the defamed symbol on the bindings and covers of his books. These people view this as Kipling being a Nazi sympathizer. This does not seem to be the case. The pre Nazi Swastika was a Hindu symbol of good luck, which he learned through his father s knowledge of Indian art, but the suspicion still remains to this day. (Walker) While in the United States, Josephine and Kipling both contracted pneumonia. Caroline was unable to watch after them both and was forced to care for only one of them. • 5. The Ethics of Crowdsourcing Stephanie Lee Ethics of Crowdsourcing Crowdsourcing ; Innovation or Exploitation? Abstract Crowdsourcing is the concept of mass collaboration of external outsourced tasks typically from an institution to its community (Howe, 2005). This paper explores the two sides of crowd sourcing; whether this net enabled community collaboration is accelerating innovation or exploiting the laborers with menial tasks of little to no benefit through an analysis of Soylent, one of the latest innovations in crowd sourcing using John Rawls Theory of Justice, the Veil of Ignorance, I aim to demonstrate how can we all benefit from crowdsourcing and harness the true power of collective intelligence and mass collaboration just by maintaining a fine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1714, the British Government was stuck for a solution to what they called The Longitude Problem which made sailing difficult and deadly (killing 1,000s of seamen every year) (Thomas, 2011). Inaccurate Longitude charts were causing sailors to be lost at sea, and in some cases people starved. Seeking innovation, the British Government offered ВЈ20,000 for people to invent a solution (ВЈ20,000 in 1714 is around $4.7 million dollars in 2010) (Thomas, 2011). Innovative scientists and sailors came together to formulate information that is more accurate. This is possibly the first ever example of crowdsourcing; thus, solving the problems for many sailors. The contest was considered unsolvable by many. John Harrison, the son of a carpenter, won the Longitude contest. Harrison invented the marine chronometer (i.e. an accurate, vacuum sealed pocket watch) (Thomas, 2011). His knowledge and brilliance helped solve navigation in the 1700 s. The aristocrats were hesitant to award Harrison the prize but eventually paid him the ВЈ20,000 (Thomas, 2011). This example of crowdsourcing is a great one because it highlights one of the principles of crowdsourcing innovation and creativity can come from anywhere (Thomas, 2011). In the early 18th century, being able to navigate accurately was the difference of returning home or not. Getting lost on a transoceanic voyage did not just mean that a competing nation could ... • 7. Infect Influenza Vaccines When we hear the word virus, we usually think of something that makes us sick. A virus is an ultramicroscopic infectious organism that, having no independent metabolic activity, can replicate only within a cell of another host organism. A virus consists of a core of nucleic acid, either RNA or DNA, surrounded by a coating of antigenic protein and sometimes a lipid layer surrounds it as well. The viral genome provides the genetic code for replication, and the host cell provides the necessary energy and raw materials. To fight viruses, we use vaccines. While some may infect a broad range, other viruses can only infect certain kinds of cells. Vaccines are made of inactive, dead or weakened viruscells or protein antigens that can no longer infect... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Center for Disease Control (CDC), influenza viruses are divided into three types, designated as A, B, and C. Influenza type C usually only causes either very mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. Types A and B, however, are responsible for epidemics of respiratory illnesses that can result in hospitalization, or even death. Influenza is constantly changing over time by mutations. This continual change allows the virus to evade the antibodies that were meant to kill it. A host infected with influenza virus develops antibodies against that virus; as the virus changes, the first antibody no longer recognizes the newer virus and infection can occur because the host does not recognize the new flu virus as a problem until the infection is well under way. The first antibody developed may, in some instances, provide partial protection against infection with a new influenza virus. According to Medicine Net.com, In 2009, almost all individuals had no antibodies that could recognize the novel H1N1 virus immediately. It quickly spread throughout the world so fast that the WHO declared this new flu strain (termed novel H1N1 influenza A swine flu). There are currently four main strains of influenza circulating worldwide. Three of the viruses are type A, and one is type B. Type A viruses are divided into subtypes based on the differences in two viral proteins called hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). The three subtypes of influenza A are A(H1N1), A(H3N2), and A(H5N1). The reason for several strands of type A are because of the two kinds of change influenza A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This sense of unfairness will be exacerbated if the employee perceives no opportunity to rebut the information or present his or her views.(16) The task, therefore, becomes developing a process that cultivates accurate and comprehensive information in a manner that is perceived by employees as being fair. Leventhal and Greenberg discussed three broad principles that influence perceived fairness in performance appraisal systems. First, employees should possess the ability to correct or rebut inaccurate information. Second, that specific procedures should be introduced to increase the accuracy of performance information (such as performance diaries, comprehensive rater training, objective performance standards). Third, that procedural safeguards are present to discourage biased ratings (appeal processes, evaluating the rater on how well they administer the process). To fully operationalize these principles, a much greater voice and role for the employee is necessary. What are the preferred means for accomplishing these goals? Employee Voice Participation, goal setting and feedback are formal means for interjecting employee voice into the appraisal process. However, as Parliament became more accustomed to allocating funds, some modern concepts and terminology began to develop. In 1733 Robert Walpole, Whig Prime Minister under George I, began referring to the inauguration of the discussions on the Crown s proposed expenditures as the opening of the budget. This convention continued, and gradually by 1800 this usage was universally accepted in England. In France a conscious effort to make government rational was initiated. Following the lead of the Philosophers during the Age of Reason, and eager to replace the medieval traditions of the ancient regime, the French introduced sweeping changes to their government and society during the reign of Napoleon. • 13. Six Steps In Conflict Resolution Conflicts in intimate relationships subsist inevitable. Despite the degree to which individuals stand alike, differences in opinions and beliefs will transpire. This chapter taught me that it does not stand as the topic of disagreement that retains importance, but rather the way in which the couple resolves the conflict. According the text, six steps exist to aid in conflict resolution; The steps are: (1) clarifying the issue; (2) finding out what each person wants; (3) identifying various alternatives; (4) deciding how to negotiate; (5) solidifying agreements; and (6) reviewing and renegotiating (Olson, DeFrain, Skogrand, 2014, p. 154). Upon reading the descriptions and facts, I find these six steps to rest highly effective and imperative to conflict resolution. When a disagreement emerges, couples tend to play the blame game, ignore their parent s perspective, and explore for a quick solution. While it stands evident that these behaviors do not persist effective, these six steps provide a solution. Although I do find these six steps to exist accurate, I cannot guarantee how realistic they stand. • 14. Figurative Language And Symbolism In Sailing The Byzantium Literature is always personal, always one man s vision of the world, one man s experience (W.B. Yeats n.d.). Such perspicacity is evident in the works of William Butler Yeats, whose collection of poetry, The Tower, reflects his fascination with mysticism and the days of yore. The poem Sailing the Byzantium illustrates how William Butler Yeats use of artistic diction and symbolism reveals the parallels of ancient civilization and the cycle of life and communicates the dual themes of obsolescence and perpetuity. Yeats elegy, details a metaphoric spiritual journey of renewal to the holy city seeking intellectual refuge within an artifice of eternity (Yeats, Lines 16,24). His use of figurative language elicits both the somber and nostalgic tones evident throughout the poem. Metaphorically, the speaker emphasizes the theme of obsolescence by alluding to his own physical limitations and concern for his own mortality living in a country unfit for old men among... • 15. Ignorance, Ignorance And Ignorance According to Mark Lilla s Ignorance and Bliss , The source of the proverb Ignorance is Bliss is a poem by the 18th century English poet Thomas Gray, who wrote in passing: Where ignorance is bliss/ Tis folly to be wise (Lilla). At the time the proverb was referring to the Enlightenment and Christianity s glorification of blind faith, and its renunciation of both scientific reason and philosophical inquiry; however, today, it can be interpreted as whether or not man has the ability to maintain happinessin the midst of unhappiness. Is ignorancereally bliss? Can it serve as a way to avoid anxieties, or would repression of issues only lead to more dissatisfaction? Webster s dictionary defines ignorance as lack of knowledge, education, or awareness. However, it can also be seen as a refusal to acknowledge information. Bliss is defined as complete happiness. Does the idea of ignorance is bliss really hold true? Can happiness be a byproduct of a lack of knowledge and awareness, or the flat out refusal to acknowledge? The people of Omelas seemed to have achieved that. The townspeople of Omelas live in a prosperous Utopian town where everyone is happy, but in order to maintain their way of life a child must be subjected to inhuman treatment and suffering, They all know it is there, all the people of Omelas...[T]hey all understand that their happiness...depends wholly on this child s abominable misery (Le Guin). • 16. What Women and Islam Have in Common Essay What Women and Islam Have in Common What do women and Islam have in common? Besides the stereotyped images that each suffers from individually, the status of women in Islam is one of the most extremely misunderstood and incorrectly portrayed things in western society. We can investigate why this is so later. First, a brief introduction to the actual status of women in Islam is in order. Before discussing issues pertinent to the social status of women, consider the original creation of the woman as portrayed by the Quoran (the Islamic holy book) which does not subscribe to the view that Eve was created from the crooked rib of Adam and thus is of inferior status: O humankind, be conscious of your Sustainer who has created you out ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Islam has also ensured the woman s right to remarry pending a three month refrainment period. As for social rights, Islam has always recognized the prominent role that women play in society. They are given the freedom to pursue any profession including political positions. Both in the past and present day, women in Islamic societies have reached political heights unparalleled in the most advanced western nations. Even in the earliest day of Islam, Aysha, the daughter of the prophet, lead an army of 30,000 soldiers. Currently, women lead two Islamic countries: Benazir Bhutto has served as the prime minister of Pakistan since 1988 and has been a strong and remarkable leader. Turkey is also headed by a Muslim woman, Tansu Ciller, who was elected the prime minister in 1993. Here in the U.S., we still have never had a female president and the outlook doesn t look too good either. Those are just a few of the facts. Why then is Islam portrayed as a religion that oppresses women and puts them in a position inferior to men? Part of that is certainly due to the stereotyped image of how Islamic women are portrayed in western media as an extension of Islam bashing. A prominent example is the movie Not Without My Daughter in which scores of false and fictitious depictions were made of women in an Islamic country. It is also true, however, that in many so called Islamic countries, women are not treated according to their God given rights. But this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many people believe that artificial intelligence will advance to become better than humans and replace humans in most jobs. The opposite belief is that AI will be used to improve the standard of living and will be a tool to support humans, not replace them. Job automation has many benefits such as performing more dangerous jobs and complete tasks that humans do not desire to do. Even though job automation has benefits, there are many people who believe robots will take over the job market and the unemployment rate will skyrocket. There are multiple supporting factors for each side of the job automation debate, but the argument will never be settled until AI is further advanced and utilized. The main key points of the side that support the advancement of job automation is that AI will improve the standard of living, lower the prices of products, and encourage people to get higher education. As job automation progresses, so does the standard of living. The largest sector of the job industry that will be affected by job automation is the service sector, manufacturing, and many other jobs that do not require higher education. There are two basic principles that a system can be approached by; the continuous matter or modular approach and the discrete matter or lumped mass approach (Holroyd, 2007). Generally, when a mass can be defined as a rigid body or, in other words, when a system have a finite number of degrees of freedom, it is more efficient to be modeled as a discrete (lumped parameter system). On the other hand, when a mass is non uniform or, in other words, when a system have an infinite number of degrees of freedom (e.g. because it includes continuous elastic members), it is best to be modeled as a continuous (distributed parameter system). However, the behaviour and interaction of individual components of an electromechanical system is not possible to be examined with lumped parameter models. Finally, lumped parameter models require modifications in their whole lumped model when changes in any system component occur. As already mentioned, distributed (modularized) models are solved by a set of partial differential equations due to all the dependent variables consist of more than one independent variable. However, these equations can be homogeneous or non homogenous (inhomogeneous) equations. In practice, the solution of a homogeneous equation with the appropriate boundary conditions illustrates the behavior of the system after it has been properly set in motion and then subject to no further force. In addition to this, the solution depicts the trend of the system to vibrate at a number of natural frequencies. On the contrary, the solution of a non homogeneous equation depicts the behavior of the system to specific forces (Holroyd, 2007). The forced damped method can be used for solving the non homogeneous equation of motion. According to this method, the steady state response to exciting forces is calculated by transfer matrices. Moreover, this method uses fewer elements than the lumped mass approach in order to create a realistic model. This method contains terms which are dependent on frequency, thus it requires the ... Several apprentice painters, namely Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, and FrГ©dГ©ric Bazille learned that they did not share the same views of the AcadГ©mie des Beaux Arts. The Academy believed that mythological and historical scenes for painting was vastly superior to that of still life and landscape scenes. The AcadГ©mie des Beaux Arts would run an art show, the Salon de Paris, which was the only way for an artist during that time to gain prestige, commissions, and of course money. The Salon would only accept paintings which were in their approved style, which was based on the art of the old masters. Since the art of these young painters did not conform to the standards put forth by the AcadГ©mie des Beaux Arts, their art was mostly rejected until Emperor Napoleon III settled to allow the public to judge the submitted art themselves. The Salon des RefusГ©s was created just for this purpose. The results of the new Salon were such; While many viewers came only to laugh, the Salon des RefusГ©s drew attention to the existence of a new tendency in art and attracted more visitors than the regular Salon. (Denvir, pg. 194). Louis Leroy wrote a disparaging review on Monet s work, Impression, Sunrise . He suggested that Monet s painting was a sketch, and it could not be called a finished work. This was where the Impressionists acquired their name. Yet even though their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But the freezing rain kept coming. The story, What Happened During the Ice Storm by Jim Heynen, is about farm boys going to collect pheasants in the middle of a raging ice storm. Every animal was safe except for the pheasants. They were frozen in place along the fence and could not see anything through the ice. After a careful analysis of the story, the reader can understand the theme, how people act in challenging situations, and human nature through imagery, diction, and figurative language. Heynen uses a lot of imagery throughout his story so people can visualize how the storm is affecting the farm boys in the situation. The narrator explains, Things around them were shining and dripping with icy rain (Heynen). The icy rain makes it more difficult to concentrate on how to handle the situation. Upon their arrival to the fence, the boys can see how the storm has taken a toll on the birds. The narrator states, Some of them lifted their heads and turned them from side to side, but they were blindfolded with ice and didn t flush (Heynen). District 9 Movie Analysis District 9 (Peter Jackson, 2009), a science п¬Ѓction п¬Ѓlm produced by Peter Jackson, is a rare gem unlike the many sci п¬Ѓ movies which have been released in our time. The story is established via a mix of standard third person camera and documentary footage and takes place in the present a twist from your regular science п¬Ѓction п¬Ѓlm which normally takes place in the future. The п¬Ѓlm, about a colony of alien refugees forced by humans to live in a South African slum, is an example of social satire by presenting a critique of the injustice with which we treat those who are different from us. In producing District 9, Jackson s intention was to address racism as an ideology by forcing the viewers to be the racist. At the beginning of the п¬Ѓlm, when we are introduced to the aliens that reside in District 9, we immediately despise them. The Prawns themselves exhibit human like characteristics (ie. two arms, two legs, stand up right) but also exhibit grotesque characteristics. The aliens are п¬Ѓlthy, violent and vulgar as we catch them consistently using foul language. They live in a slum that is decaying, crumbling and full of garbage, not by choice, but forced by humans. The aliens are ostracized and barred from most businesses and those humans who live in near proximity to the aliens want more distance. They are the enemy. The centuries old Sunni Shia divide is exacerbated by contemporary concerns over power, freedom and equality (8). Many Sunni countries are prejudiced against Shiites and at the same time, are scared of Shiism spreading. Sunni dominated governments such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan have worked to keep Shiites and Sunnis divided and specifically, to keep Shia subjugated (8,9). For example, the government of Saudi has worked to build a network of mosques, seminaries, schools, and writers that emphasize Sunni identity (8). In Algeria, the minister of education dismissed teachers in the fear that they were spreading Shiism. The Sunni s fear of Shia spreading that it controls even the potential of Shiism to spread makes the divide even bigger and has caused anti Shia propaganda with renewed virulence (9,11). The prejudice that Sunnis hold against Shiites is illustrated in this example. • 38. The Importance Of A Parent s Involvement The Importance of Child Development A child s success in life is directly linked to how they developed as a child. There are many aspects that go into child development. Experiences, environments, as well as how they reach developmental milestones play a huge role in the overall shaping of the child. If a child is deprived of these important developments, their hope for a normal, rewarding life is very slim. In my experience as a mother I have found that being involved in helping my daughter reach her developmental goals has been very rewarding for the both of us. The importance of a parent s involvement in reaching these milestones is almost immeasurable. Simple things, such as stacking blocks with your child can have a dramatic effect on their development. Months before I had my daughter I researched all kinds of methods and activities to do with her to encourage her development. There are four major components of child developmentthat are imperative to the child s future. Physical, emotional, social and cognitive development are four types of development essential to a properly developed child. Physical development is the foundation of basic physical skills such as walking, running, holding a pencil and shaking hands. A bildungsroman is a story of formation, where the main character or characters face their demons. These concepts were highly present within the storyline of A Separate Peace, and they follow the development of the main character, Gene Forrester. Throughout the conflicts that occurred, Gene slowly transitioned into a new mindset that can be dissected in order to understand the cause of his life altering experiences. As he arrived to the Devon school, an all boys private academy in New Hampshire, Gene began a new chapter in his life. Many believe that the internment camps were necessary for national defense. Conversely, I believe that the actions taken place at time of war were unnecessary and racist acts. Throughout this paper, I will discuss how and why the removal of the Japanese Americans was uncalled for and harsh, while addressing the counterpoint. The first reason I believe that the Internment camps were despotic is that for other war like situations, no actions this harsh were taken. In paragraph two of the second article it says, War makes for harsh measures, notes the historian Cary McWilliams, but we cannot justify the evacuation even as a war measure. No such measure was taken against German or Italian nationals. Popular fads among the teenagers during this era are explored in detail. The prevailing theme throughout the text pertains to the idea of belonging. The poem focuses primarily on the desire teenagers have to fit in. Throughout this response I will explore the ways in which this poem differs and relates to the high schoolenvironment today. Secondly I will analyze the connections between this poem and a modern day movie. Lastly, I will express the ways in which my personal experiences relate to the central message in the poem.
