SWOT Analysis Of UNIQLO
Introduction
First established in Hiroshima in 1984, UNIQLO is a major subsidiary of the Japanese retail
holding company. It offers stylish, fashionable and high quality apparel at a reasonable price.
The brand spread across the country and opened up to 100 stores by the year 1994. In September
2002, UNIQLO opened their first store in Shanghai, China and had opened 480 stores since.
Today, UNIQLO is described as one of the largest clothingretailer in the world. Hence, this report
will further discuss the company s strategic management, the marketing mix as well as the SWOT
analysis of the company.
SWOT Analysis
Strength
According to Tadashi Yanai, the chairman and CEO of UNIQLO, they are aiming China as their
biggest market. They have open a total of 480 stores in 65 locations including Hong Kong, Beijing,
Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shenyang, as well as placing their largest store in
Shanghai. Moreover, China is also the manufacturing center of the company, allowing a low cost of
production and management due to the low labor cost. It is believed that they exports about 450
million units of apparel a year.

Although this is the identity of UNIQLO, however this could be also a major drawback for

instance, about four years ago, UNIQLO sales started to decline and customers criticized products

Persuasive Essay On Risk Taking
My theme report looks at the issues of taking risks in order to overcome stereotypes, poor
decisions from the past, and the make progress in life. I learned from the theme study that if you
take risks and if you have the right personal qualities you can change your world personally, and
influence others positively. The four films I watched for this report were Les Intouchables,Life of
a King,12 years a slave and they all showed me the consequences of risktaking which were either
loss or great rewards in life.some of the results of risk taking I have discovered from these movies
are it can change your personality, leads to wealth and money, second chances in life and mostly you
take possession of something you once lost.
A significant connection across the texts is the positive consequences in life that come from
taking risks. The first similarity I see is that risk taking leads to happiness and earning a new life.
We see this in both 12 years a slave and The Hurricane. We see this positive consequence from risk
taking in life of a king where Eugene earns back love from his children and got his family back.
This positive outcome is similar to 12 years a slave when Solomon is returned (right at the end)
to his family. From the dialogue between Eugene and Katrina daughter we can see how desperate
and self accusatory Eugene is feeling about his son Marco being in prison when Katrina says I
wanted to come tell you in person. Marco s locked up. He s been in juvenile

The Virgin and The Gipsy Written by D.H. Lawrence Essay
The Virgin and The Gipsy Written by D.H. Lawrence
This novel is very intriguing and teaches lessons of morality, religion, and of life and death intended
for those with imagination and insight.
The author s style contributes deeply to the intrigue and true meaning to this novel. The author s
use of imagery makes tensions in the story vivid and emphatic. In this story there is a re occurring
tension between religion and desire. The tension between religion and desire is most clearly
demonstrated between the characters of Yvette and the rector. Yvette was brought up in a world of
religious conventions and beliefs, an environment of forgiveness, love, and morality. This world is
later realized to truly be a world of repression towards ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He wishes for her to be pure to her desires and emotions. Her wants and need to be seen or
recognized as a woman of flesh and blood, and not a symbol of innocence like the way her father
molded Lucille. Life and death are also described very well with imagery. Cynthia was described
as a sign of life, because she was true to her heart and her desires, while the matter was described
as a symbol of death. The contrast between Cynthia and the matter is very descriptive and
reflects the author s use of imagery very well. The narrator describes Cynthia as a great glow, a
flow of life ; #8230; ;like a sun in the home ; #8230; ; always associating her presence with
brightness #8230;.and glamour. ;(pgs.5 8). These descriptions of Cynthia give a sense of life and
warmth. The author created an image for the reader so wonderfully that when this glamorous
creature left; she took all life with her. The rector turned bitter and resentful because in the rector
s eyes Cynthia conveyed purity and freshness, when she left she took all her pure qualities with
her and she left behind a nettle ;, a toad ;, and a gross ; woman to take her place, the matter. In
contrast to Cynthia the matter appears to be destructive, ugly, nosy, and insignificant, the utmost
representation of death. It is when the matter comes to take over the lives of the Saywell s they all
move to the rectory. The rectory was described by the narrator to be dark, and never fresh. The
characters within the rectory

Essay about What Really Happened During the First...
There can be countless records of the same event, and while many times each record is different,
there are also incidents in which one needs to know every record to piece together what really
happened. The story of the first Thanksgiving takes place in 1621, and is generally known as a
meal that was shared between the Pilgrims and the Indians. For the Pilgrims, this was a harvest
festival, much like one they would have had in England. For the Indians, it was a show of
hospitality from the Pilgrims, similar to what they would expect from visiting another Indian tribe.
With being told only that, one can already see that there are already two very different histories of
the same event recorded. Of greater interest, perhaps, are the different... Show more content on

The History Channel s Desperate Crossing tells the story of the Pilgrims, their journey to
Plymouth, their horrible first year, and finally, the first Thanksgiving. Desperate Crossing follows
the accounts of both Winslow and Bradford fairly well, but begins to deviate slightly. They show
that the Pilgrims and Indians played games, drank, and raced, and competed together, some of
which are only vaguely and briefly alluded to by Winslow, and never by Bradford. The History
Channel also shows a much more tense situation than the impression given from Bradford and
Winslow. According to the History Channel, everything from Massasoitshowing up with his ninety
some men and the Pilgrims firing their arms is all a display of strength from both sides.
The History Channel obviously takes some liberties in their presentation of history. Winslow and
Bradford do not mention anything about the clothing worn, if there was any drinking involved,
if there was silverware, where the feasts were held, and many other seemingly trivial details.
Desperate Crossing makes some assumptions on what took place in 1621, but it does quote both
Winslow and Bradford word for word. While we re shown a picture that may or may not actually
represent what took place at the first Thanksgiving, at the very least, we re given Winslow s and
Bradford s descriptions of it. The History Channel used what was already known from the eye
witness accounts combined with what

Fanny in Jane Austen s Mansfield Park Essay

(MARY POOVEY) DO YOU AGREE WITH THIS READING OF FANNY amp;#8217;S ROLE
IN amp;#8216;MANSFIELD PARK amp;#8217;
Mansfield Park has sometimes been considered as atypical of Jane Austen as being solemn and
moralistic. Poor Fanny Price is brought up at Mansfield Park with her uncle and aunt. Where only
her cousin Edmund helps her with the difficulties she suffers from the rest of the family, and from
her own fearfulness and timidity. When the sophisticated Crawfords (Henry and Mary) visit the
Mansfield neighbourhood, the moral sense of each marriageable member of the Mansfield family
is tested in various ways, but Fanny emerges unscathed.

This may be moderated by the history of displacement Jane Austen has provided for Fanny: the
years of intimidation she has endured from Mrs Norris and her dependence on Edmund, whose
kindness comes with instructions for her of how she should behave.
Fanny has a disapproving attitude towards Mary. We are never sure whether this is due to Fanny
amp;#8217;s morals or her jealousy of the way Edmund is fixated with her.
As a result of Edmunds amp;#8217; coaching, Fanny amp;#8217;s moral attitudes in general are
over determined, so it is quite easy for us to think of her as modelling a amp;#8216;conduct manual

Reducing High School Dropouts
In the education system today, competition for scholarships and acceptance into college is
increasingly competitive. In order to access to these advantageous opportunities, students in high
school work diligently in order to maintain high grades. As a consequence, distractions, and even
worse, falling behind, can be disastrous. Many of these said distractions however, are fellow
students themselves. Just as many students strive for excellence, others barely pass for mediocracy,
and they drag diligent students down in their apathy of school. In order to remove these
distractions, it could be suggested that by lowering the high schooldropoutage, it would benefit
studious students by removing those who don t wish to be attending school.... Show more content on

These opponents sight many reasons and examples of why the high school age should not be
lowered. One of these reasons is that they do not believe that allowing a juvenile to decide such a
defining moment in their life without parental consent. As many high school drop outs potentially
earn a drastically lower salary than their high school diploma receiving counter parts, it is seen as
irresponsible to allow, what is essentially a child, to make such a devastating life

Analysis Of Editha By William Dean Howells And The Yellow...
Realism is the art of exposing the hardcore truth in a form of literature while keeping it creative
in its fashion. Realism, in itself is a type of literature I am the fondest of because although the
truth hurts sometimes, it will always be better than a sweet lie. Most of the literary realism I have
experienced has worked hand in hand with romantics as it exposes the truth behind marriages in
the 18th and 19th centuries. Two stories I have read that stood out the most to me on the grounds
of literary realism are: Editha by William Dean Howellsand The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte
Perkins Gilman.
Editha by William Dean Howells, will go down as one of many strong points of evidence when it
comes down to literary realism. This comes into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marriage was a major key as well because it showed how marriage was set up and how women
were domesticated and voices were silent. That was a real eye opener because woman didn t have
any rights and was basically to stay silent and do what they are told by their spouse.
In essence, literary realism is put in place to give its readers a real place of how life was or how
something occurs in the pass. The two stories that gave me a good depiction of what realism is
are: Editha by William Dean Howells, and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The
two stories put things in perspective when it comes to life in the nineteenth century and the
problems that came along with it. Which are so unfortunate in some cases but it gives us the
readers the raw truth.
There is a thing that occurs in stories that give you a since of humor while still giving you an
ultimate message. Mark Twain has become the connoisseur of this term and uses it in a very
unique way to show his readers that there can always be humor in your writing even when you
think it s impossible. The term is satire which in my own words mean putting humor and
information in way that makes you think. I have found this prominent in two of Mark Twain s
books: The Good Little Boy, and The Bad Little Boy. These stories give its readers satire

A Successful Man As A Self Made Man
The self made man is often portrayed as a story of rags to riches. A person who overcomes any
obstacle thrown at him/her and defies all odds. These stories incite a reaction in readers, often
leaving them in awe. How can a person become so successful, even though the universe is
seemingly against them? The truthMalcolm Gladwelluncovered in his novel Outliers is the people
at the top of the ladder did not have everything stacked against them. Gladwell says that there is
no such concept as a self made man. Successful people have been helped along the way by a
variety of reasons, such as how wealthy their family was, to their birth month. While I feel that
there is no such thing as a self made man because circumstance and motivation are a key factor in
how successful one becomes, I feel as if a person s luck has a lot to deal with them thriving in their
career.
In addition, throughout Outliers it becomes apparent that the circumstances people have been born
into assists them to surpass any competition. For example, technology legends such as Bill Gates,
Eric Schmidt, Vinod Khosla, and Steve Jobs were all born in a one year time span. What a crazy
coincidence that four of the most successful men in technology were all born so close to one
another. The truth is that certain opportunities arose for all of them in college: easy access to
computers. If they had been any older or younger, they would have missed on the opportunities to
use the new technology due to being stuck

The Purpose of Propaganda in Today s Society
Propaganda in today s society serves the same purpose as it did many years ago, and that purpose is
to promote a fitting solution to a problem or to sell an idea or item. There are various types of
propaganda in the world. The main way that propaganda is advertised would be the media.
Whether it be television, newspapers, radio etc . the promoter advertiser will always find a way to
promote their idea or product. You also have seven basic sections or types of propaganda; transfer,
testimonial, glittering generalities, plain folks, bandwagon, name calling and card stacking. Each
of these is used in propaganda whether it is current and modern art forms such as Nikeв„ў
commercials or from 100 years ago in political cartoons. Each of the seven types of propaganda
differs and is unique in their its own way. Propaganda is, has always been, and shall continue to
be, a huge part of the advertising world of society.
Transfer is a type of propaganda in which the media utilizes a person or object that people find
good natured or intriguing, and they associate the person or object with a product. In this form of
propaganda, symbols are constantly being utilized. Most political campaign promotion posters
contain the transfer category. Some ads such as icy hot and cleaning products use well known
people or well known people s names to promote their product. Take Shaquille O Neal s
commercials for the Icy Hot patches for example. People pay attention to the ad because they see

Closed Loop Essay
Abstract Closed loop feedback control approaches allow precise, real time control of neural
activity pattern to lock spiking activity to specific target spiking rate within neural network. This
approaches enable investigators to tune the internal brain state into a desired state, induce or
disrupt the related frequency of neural network in order to achieve a specific functionality. Here we
implement a continuous, precise closed loop feed back control to lock the firing rate at specific
targeted spiking activities in moto cortex of isoflurane anesthetized rats and in a computational
network level model. We found that controllability of neural activity strikingly varies as neural state
changes, furthermore we found it trade off between... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Why does a quiescent animal evoke a larger response and adaptation comparing to an active and
awake animal? There is a hypothesis that when cortex maintains the synchronized state in an
anesthetized and quiescent awake animal, synapses are often in resting state so they are electrically
less active. Therefore, they can save energy to perform other functions [26, 27]. Also, when the
cortex evokes a large response to the first stimulus in a high repetitive stimulus within
synchronization, it leaves less energy for response to other stimuli in the train therefore the
response would suppress stronger in synchronized than the desynchronized state. Despite apparent
complex state dependency of cortical response, investigators developed a simple excitable model to
predict subsequent sensory response using background ongoing activity prior to the presentation of
stimuli, they estimated the parameters of the model using spontaneous activity prior to the onset of
stimuli. Model dynamics was changed to reproduce different cortical states, a nonlinear, self
exciting system generated synchronized state and a linear system in reproduced desynchronized
states. response to an isolated unattended stimulus was quantitatively predicted on a trial by trial
basis using a simple dynamical system, it was shown that response is generated based on the same
dynamics as spontaneous activity [28]. Closed loop control systems A closed loop control system,
also refers to a self adjusting

The Distribution Of The Company Essay
The variation in the number of sales also interferes with the planning process within the company.
Future projections are made based on the prospected sales hence profits by the company. Due to
the fact that the sales of sportswear varies, the company cannot easily project its future growth as
well as predict the profits it will make in future (Plunkett, 2009).
In addition to this, the political and financial instability that is making headwinds in key worldwide
markets is also a contributing factor to the inability of the company to come up with precise
projections. It looks more Europe since it has identity with the company s EMEA direct business
where CSC has continuous exertions to revitalize the Columbia brand, and in South America
regarding import limitations and money obligations in key wholesaler markets. The other factor is
the continuous change in the exchange rates for the foreign currencies. This changes with time and
is quite irregular. This implies that no single firm can come up with its financial plan based on
accurate exchange rates. This has to be subjected to some approximations that could interfere with
the company budget in the long term basis. There exist many more factors that are to be put into
consideration. Apart from the ones that have been discussed.
Despite all these, the company expects to expand and increase its net income. There are some
factors that will contribute to the expansion. The first one is an increment in the number of sales by

metabolic pathways. I agree with Foster s first explanation of why we sleep. Sleep helps repair and

of chemicals throughout our bodies. Sleep can also heal the body physically. For example, it can

Newton s Laws of Motion
An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same
speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force (Newton s First Law).
To determine if a person should run or walk, you will have to understand the Second Law of
Motion. The second law states that force equals mass times acceleration. In order for a person
of a certain mass to accelerate, that person must use some force, so the force must overcome
gravity, friction, and be larger than the mass of the person trying to move (Newton s Second Law
of Motion). If you want to walk or run you will need a bigger force (В¶ 4). To walk is not as hard
as running, so less force is needed to succeed in doing it (Forester). This leads us to the third law
of motion, for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction (Newton s Third Law).
Another concept of Physics is moving water. For example, flushing the toilet, waterfalls
and dams. Flushing a toilet is a great example of transferring energy. Usually on most toilets
there is tan on the back of it filled with water. Water that is stored is a great example of potential
energy and no kinetic energy. Once toilet is flushed, it gives the water momentum. From
waterfalls and dams we can produce hydropower. It is a renewable energy source that converts
kinetic energy from falling water into electricity. From the water momentum pushes against the
turbine s blades to switch

Their Eyes Were Watching God By Zora Neale Hurston Essay
In Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, as well as in modern times, there are
many struggles surrounding gender, social class, and race. Throughout the entirety of this novel,
Hurston describes every aspect of Janie s life, in an attempt to show how young girls are
transformed into women. Hurston did not describe the physical transformation, but instead tackled
the much more complicated mental transformation. At the beginning of the novel, the reader is
greeted with a seemingly innocent little girl named Janie Crawford. She was stretched on her back
beneath the peartree soaking in the alto chant of the visiting bees, the gold of the sun and the
panting breath of the breeze (Hurston 16) That just screams innocence. This little girl is just like
a normal little girl, she is fanaticizing over the idea of being in love, and finding her prince
charming. While she was growing up, Janie did not have a very good example, or an example at
all, of what true love is. Janie never met her parents, and was raised by her Nanny , a womanwith
very old timer beliefs. Janie s nanny was very strict about these things as well, she wanted Janie
to be better than her peers, and have more material possessions than anybody else. This is a very
selfish way to raise a child up, but Nanny knew no better, she was just doing what she considered
best for Janie. The selfish beliefs that Nanny instilled in Janie were not what made Janie s life

After this controversy regarding certain ratings, people begin to ask, does the MPAA have any
certain biases? Here are the facts, according to George Gerbner (University of Pennsylvania, 1987),
violence of children s television shows (includes violent characters, victims and perpetrators of
violence) are double than that of prime time adult television shows. Back in 1961, Albert
Bandura conducted the Bobo Doll Experiment to study aggression in children. With Bandura s
developing Observational Learning theory (learning by observing). He carried out an experiment
with two groups of children, one who watched a film of an adult playing with a Bobo doll
violently, and one group that did not. The group that witness the violent behaviour were more
aggressive towards the doll as opposed to the other group of children. When children are young,
they are exposed to many different violent cartoons (The Roadrunner, Teenage Mutant Ninja
Turtles, Tom and Jerry, Dragon Ball Z, etc.) and thus effects the children when they grow older.
Children exposed to violent cartoons growing up are more likely to be aggressive, decreases

The Divine Command Theory In The Book Of John
The divine command theory states that an action s status as morally good is equivalent to
whether it is commanded by God. I do not think executing a criminal would ever be considered
morally permissible according to the divine command theory. I think this because in the Book of
John, Chapter 8, a woman is found guilty of adultery and is brought before Jesus. Jesus said Let he
who is without sin cast the first stone . Jesus is not condemning the sinner, but calls the sinner to
change. Killing would not be commanded by God, even if the criminal committed murder, the
equivalent would not equal execution of the murderer.
Utilitarianism is a theory that states the locus of right and wrong solely on the outcomes of
choosing one action over other

to produce custom made components for large gas and oil companies across the globe. The
company needs a design to set up their data network. A report is needed to be written where the
options for setting up their network will be outlined, including details of how all services will
be provided. Task 1: Physical Topology Diagram a)Chosen Topology:Network topologies are

4.Mesh Topology Among them Star Topology is more suitable for this network. b)Explanation of
Choosing Star Topology: In Bus Topologyall computers are attached to a single cable. So if any of
the connection breaks down, the entire network breaks down with it. It is difficult to move and
change since they are all link up together. It s difficult to troubleshoot (justfortest.tripod.com, n.d.).
In Ring topology, Data moves in a one way path only. It is expensive because multiple cables area
needed and difficult to reconfigure. Simply not fault tolerant because a single cable fault can bring
down the whole network (justfortest.tripod.com, n.d.). In Star Topology, each computer is

Burger On Milgram Experiment
In accordance to both of the articles on the Milgram experiment, although the experiment does
seem to a bit dramatized in terms of the results I do not believe such inferences do not lack any
sort of validity in a real life circumstance. Although it may seem that the conclusions may not be
as applicable in a real life situation or seen in such a clear and common manner, the outcome of
the study reveals how a person may act in a setting with social pressure. For instance, as illustrated
in the article, Replicating Milgram , Burger writes, ... the experimenter presumably had knowledge
about the procedure and had gone through many previous sessions, and so participants deferred to
his judgment .... this is often the case in real life examples

The Plight of The African Slave Essay
Introduction
Slavery was one of the darkest periods in African American history. Africans were taken from their
homes in West Africa and brought to America to work on plantations. However, slavery was not
something new as it existed in Africa before Europeans partook in it, but slavery in Africa was
very different from slavery in America. During their voyage through the Middle Passage many
slaves perished. Those who survived were sold and subjected to the harsh life on the plantations.
When this happened, their authentic cultures were drastically changed from the way of life in their
native homelands in Africa to life in the plantation society of the American colonies. In this essay, I
will attempt to show how the enslaved Africans ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Political System
Kings and queens had the authority in many villages such as in Venture s. Often times there were
more than one person in charge of the government. As in the case in Oludah Equiano s homeland,
there were no kings but chief and elders who ran the government of his village. According to
Equiano, for every transaction of the government, as far as my slender observation extended was
conducted by the chief or elders of the place (191). The political system also was consisted of
judges and senators in addition to the chiefs and elders. Surprisingly there were no jails and the
punishment depended on the crime committed. For example, according to Equaino, Adultery was
sometimes punished with slavery or death.... (191).
In America, the enslaved people had no political or judicial systems. They went from being kings
and chiefs to merely commoners under enslavement. They were two classes of

Sistine Chapel Challenges
The Sistine chapel was built between the years of 1475 and 1483 in Vatican City and is named
after the pope who had the chapel built, Sixtus IV. One of the most impressive things about the
Sistine chapel and one of the most famous works of art in history is Michelangelo s painting on
the ceiling of the chapel. The project was completed using fresco. In 1508 Michelangelowas
requested by PopeJulius II to repaint the chapel. The Chapel at the time was painted with a blue
sky and gold stars. Pope Julius II original request was to have the chapel painted with the twelve
Christian Apostles and when the project was completed Michelangelo had created more than 3,000
figures. The ceiling was created depicting nine stories from the bible s book of genesis, including

The first challenge and maybe the easiest for Michelangelo to overcome was the fact that he had
no experience painting with fresco and he considered himself a sculptor. The next challenge was
the sheer size of the painting at a whopping 14 meters by 40.5 meters. That is more than 132
square meters larger than a basketball court. Completing this large of painting was a monumental
task enough even without all the other challenges faced by Michelangelo. Michelangelo accepted
this commission regardless and would continue to face many more challenges over the next four
years. One of the most obvious challenges that stood in the way of completing this challenging
work of art was the fact that it was the ceiling that needed to be painted. A local townsman offered
to manufacture scaffolding for Michelangelo that would hang from the ceiling, but Michelangelo
refused because he did not want to leave holes in the ceiling from where the scaffolding would
have hung. Michelangelo then created his own scaffolding that could be held in place by brackets

Apollonian Influences
In the book The Birth of Tragedy, Neitchez identifies two ways of thinking that present themselves
in art. The first is Dionysian which is intoxication, instinctual, intuitive, pertaining to the sensation
of pleasure or pain, ending of all boundaries, excess, and second Apollonian, which is the dream
state, exhaustion of possibilities, creation, separation from the chaos of life. The one element of
Hip Hop with both Dionysian and Apollonian influences is Emcee which is the conveyer of the

The Fall of Russia Essay
After the collapse of the Soviet Union there were many different problems facing the new Russian
government. Through the use of reforms many of these issues were cured but not overnight. Boris
Yeltsin and his Prime Minister Yegor Gaidar implemented several policies while the economy was
not moving well. Then Vladimir Putinwould carry on reforms while making new ones or changing
existing policies. How would these amendments affect the economy after the collapse of the
Communist regime?
In 1992, Yeltsin launched an economic reform program developed by Acting Prime Minister Yegor
Gaidar. The program also known as shock therapy brought fundamental changes in the economy.

The temporary truce broke, however, broke down and Yeltsin declared emergency presidential rule;

Yeltsin. Yeltsin called together a constitutional convention to write a new constitution. He banned
eight political parties, fired several high ranking government officials who had failed to support
him, and suspended Russia s regional and town councils, many of which had sided with his

Yeltsin then issued a decree dissolving both the Supreme Soviet and the Congress of People s

Cronkhite discussed the King incident in depth and how the failures of the Loa Angeles Police

I think the arms for hostage ordeal in Iran should have led to a further investigation of the truth for

typical response from our government today. I do not believe that Reagan should not have been
impeached but should have been more transparent on the Iran Contra Scandal. This ordeal led to
further distrust in our government and made people question Reagan s authenticity about keeping
America safe. The sex scandal involving president Clinton showed that a president would go to

The Second Sex By Simone De Beauvoir Summary
In both the worlds of existential feminism and radical feminism, the housewife is separated a
degree below other women, as a figure deemed lesser, or even other, form women within the
feminist movement. In Simone de Beauvoir s 1949 novel The Second Sex, the housewife
embodies the feminine other, a woman who takes the reason men subjugated women, embraces
it, and then uses it to her advantage. She becomes the example of how women adapt and survive
in the patriarchy, and the women who sacrifices her autonomy to live in comfort and safety,
rather than attempt to reform society. Beauvoir makes the housewife the definition of the
feminine other to justify how women sacrifice their autonomy and ability to obtain
transcendence if they remain complacent in male society. What defines women as the other is
not found in the state of nature or social history but in her biology and the overbearing
consequences of her ability to become pregnant. In Beauvoir s work, Women are inherently
different from men in the biology and how omnipresent it is in their lives, and biology defines
women because at the time she wrote The Second Sex the consequences of sex permeated every
aspect of daily life. With birth control still difficult to obtain, the consequences of sex are at the
forefront of a women s mind, and if she wants to be sexually active, she must constantly consider
the impacts another life will have on her finances, her home, her relationships and her work, if she
is able to find it. A

Story of a Holocaust Survivor
I pray you never stand at any crossroads in your own lives, but if you do, if the darkness seems
so total, if you think there is no way out, remember, never ever give up. The darker the night, the
brighter the dawn, and when it gets really, really dark, this is when one sees the true brilliance of
the stars. These words were spoken by Gerda Klein, a Holocaust survivor. Her story is filled with
desperation and an overwhelming sense of hope. Gerda Weissmann was born in Bielsko,
Poland. Both of her parents and her older brother died during the Holocaust. She was somehow
able to survive the ghetto, deportation, slave labor camps and a three month death march. She
was rescued by an American soldier named Kurt Klein. She ended up marrying him and moving
to the United States. Her story is an example of a person who struggled with adversity but
searched for a reason to hope. She has used her remarkable survival as an inspiration for those
who have no reason to believe they can overcome struggles. She has a foundation named
Citizenship Counts which teaches students about their rights and the importance of their
citizenship. She has written many books about her experiences and her belief that hope will
help a person overcome darkness. She travels the world today telling people her story to increase
their knowledge of the Holocaust. Her story of survival serves of as an inspiration to people who

Evelina By Frances Burney Essay
One of the defining characteristics of 18th century England was the contrast between the city and
the country. The people who lived in the city were as partial and loyal to their own environment as
the people who were brought up in the countryside, and the two groups developed opinions about
each other that were often based on bias and misunderstanding. Frances Burney s novel
Evelinapresents a comparison of city life and country life from the point of view of city and
country dwellers, showing how the country and the city were viewed differently by residents of
both places.
In Evelina, the inhabitants of the countryside appreciate the calm and peaceful lifestyle they enjoy
there. Whenever the characters of Burney s novel find ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This statement shows the condescending attitude of city dwellers toward the supposedly less
refined tastes of the inhabitants of rural England, who are easily entertained by a simple play.
Madame Duval also comments several times that Evelina is a foolish, ignorant country girl (149)
showing that she believes that the term country girl is synonymous with ignorance and foolishness.
On another occasion, Madame Duval actually uses the word country as an adjective, considering
what a shame it was to see [Evelina] such a poor country, shame faced thing, when [she] ought to
be a fine lady (101). Here, the prejudiced lady essentially defines country as lowly or common,
implying that fine ladies do not come from the countryside but can only be found in the more
sophisticated realm of the city. A reputation of wealth and success is the most important thing to
these city dwellers, and in their opinion, that cannot be found in the country.
City life is also viewed differently by those who live in the city and those who live in the
country. Just like country people, residents of the city are partial to their own environment. From
a city dweller s point of view, London life is the best because it is exciting and active. While they
are in London, the members of Evelina s party attend the opera, the theater, a ball, or some other
public place nearly every night, taking their tea in a box where they can be seen and admired

Many people think they can show up at a U.S. embassy or border post, describe why they d make
a good addition to U.S. society, and be welcomed in. Unfortunately, this is the exact opposite of
how the U.S. immigration system works.
Instead, people who want to come to the U.S., whether temporarily or permanently, must determine
whether they fit into eligibility categories for either permanent residence (a green card) or for a
temporary stay ( nonimmigrant visa ).
Then they must submit an application in fact, often a series of applications to one or more of the

students, so attracted to the idea of constructing an anonymous identity through online social media
platforms, like Yik Yak? Online social networks have become increasingly populated arenas for
much of today s population, especially with regards to high school and college students. Networks
such as Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, Vine, Twitter, etc., enable users to create an identity and
present it to others by allowing them to share various aspects of their lives. Because individuals
select their own content, the resulting representation can be either a true or imaginative reflection
of the user. The attitudes, perspectives, behaviours and actions each individual chooses to present,
shape their identity within the social media universe. Like most other web based content, the
pursuit of authenticity is assumed to be at the heart of these social media networks, playing an
important role in our online interactions and our decisions about what web content we believe to be
reliable. But, what about when the network structure allows users to create, post, and interact with
anonymous identities? Anonymity eliminates the need decipher authenticity, however, it creates an

The Raped Girl s Father
Bones, she was diced bones rolled on black. The Raped Girl s Father is a disturbing poem about
a girl who is unluckily raped, and how this brings incredible anger and shame to her father. Written
by Bruce Dawe, it contains an inept use of thought, feeling and language. It is an absorbing
evocation of the girl s feelings and her horrendous suffering, and how her identity has changed as a
consequence of the rape for herself, her father and society.
In the first two lines, an aural image is employed to indicate a never ending anger in the girl s

The malevolent personification of darkness creates the sense that it symbolising her father, and
perhaps the rapist wants to hurt, cause fear and distress, and is a genuine danger to her.
So the girl lies in that darker dark , where there is simply no hope or relief of the grief that she is
feeling. What is this darker dark ? This concept causes the reader to assume she has given up and
is powerless; that this dark is completely evil, and damaging her. A victim, she lies in what she
believes will not cease. For every second of her father s brutal anger she feels his jaws rasp on the
naked bone. Another auditory image, this is an incredibly harsh sound that evokes disturbing
violence, a vicious sense of him biting and cutting into her. Furthermore, the girl feels pain to his
anger, right to her naked bone or her core. She is raw and exposed, and a disturbing impression of
death, violation and cruelty is conveyed. Because of the rape and the consequence of her father s
anger, she has lost all innocence and is utterly vulnerable.
In a crescendo of pain, devastation and hysteria, the girl mentions her terror in reliving the rape
when going through the justice system. Juxtaposed with the jaws rasp[ing] on the naked bone , the

Volcano Eruptions, Earthquakes, Hurricanes, Monsoons and much more. Global Warming has
affected us too. Lots of things effect on us, but it s not the effect it has, but how it affects our
ability to get over it. When a big tornado hits and kills a lot of people, what do we do? We let it
get a hold on us; fear takes over and we scramble for our only chance hope. We hide. So after a
big storm happens and lots of people are killed we still don t do the big thing. We don t help.
Some people like the Red Cross and other Organizations, help the people in need, but a lot of
people still stay in their cushy lives. They don t help them. If we can t help them over the
inevitable, than how can we help them with things we can

Benefits Of A Solid Waste
Beginning on October 20, I started carefully assessing my daily routine and documenting my
activities in regards to my production of solid waste, carbon emissions, and use of fresh water.
During those two weeks, I collected data and examined how I could help reduce my overall
ecological footprint and use of environmental resources through propositions, research, and online
calculations.
Solid Waste
Current Routine:
During the week, I begin my day by walking to Mean Greens cafeteria for breakfast. I am
provided with the dishes for my meal, which are all reusable and therefore I do not contribute
any waste in regards to those. I do however use multiple napkins during my meals. Often, I threw
away all the napkins I took, including the ones I did not use. I only used two of the five napkins
I got every meal. I also left food scraps on my plate, which were thrown away and contributed to
compost solid waste. I also go to Mean Greens cafeteria for lunch and dinner and have similar
habits when it comes to how much solid waste I produce during those meals. On average during
one week I throw out 30 napkins and an estimate of two pounds of food. Under circumstances
where I cannot make it to the cafeteria to eat and I need quick and easy access to food, I get fries
from Chik Fil A. This usually happens twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays before my
environmental science class. I get two large fries in a to go bag, which are all thrown away after I
am done eating. I drink three

The Dead By James Joyce Meaning
After reading The Dead by James Joyce, I came to the conclusion that the title of the short story
has a very deep meaning, both literally and figuratively. The reason for which I believe the title
has a literal meaning is that the author briefly mentions about some secondary characters, who
in one way or another, are part of the story but are no longer alive. Some of these characters are
the following: Pat Morkan (Brother of Kate and Julia), Ellen Morkan Conroy (Mother of
Gabriel), T.J Conroy (Member of the Dublin Port and Docks Board, and Father of Gabriel), Patrick
Morkan (Owner of a starch mill, and Father of Kate and Julia), and, especially, Michael Furey
(Gretta s first lover who died for the love of her). At the same time, I consider

Comparing Rousseau And Mill On Liberty Essay
The term civil or social liberties is one that garners a lot of attention and focus from both
Rousseau and Mill, although they tackle the subject from slightly different angles. Rousseau
believes that the fundamental problem facing people s capacity to leave the state of nature and
enter a society in which their liberty is protected is the ability to find a form of association that
defends and protects the person and goods of each associate with all the common force, and by
means of which each one, unitingwith all, nevertheless obeys only himself and remainsas free as
before (Rousseau 53). Man is forced to leave the state of nature because their resistance to the
obstacles faced is beginning to fail (Rousseau 52). Milldoes not... Show more content on

By joining civil society and becoming a part of the general will, man is enriching his actions with a
morality and rationality that was previously lacking. As he states in Book I, Chapter VIII, although
in this state he deprives himself of several advantages given to him by nature, he gains such great
ones...that changed him from a stupid, limited animal into an intelligent being and a man
(Rousseau 56). What man posses in nature is an unlimited physical freedom to pursue everything
that tempts him, although this is viewed by Rousseau as almost an enslavement towards one s own
instincts. In a civil state man is benefited by substituting justice for instinct in his behaviour and
giving his actions the morality they previously lacked (Rousseau 54). In acting in accordance with
the general will man is granted the most important form of all freedoms, civil freedom.
Freedom of individuality is seen as the essential form of freedom according to Mill. The freedom
of thought and speech, discussed in Chapter 2, do play a pivotal role in ensuring freedom,
however, they are viewed more as a means to an end rather than being something that should be
pursued for its own good. The freedom of individuality is essential for human progress and
development and it is only the cultivation of individuality which produces, or can produce, well
developed human beings (Mill 70). It is this stressed importance on the importance of

The Effect Of Paced Breathing On Insomnia And Vagal...
Sleep can be effected in a number of ways whether it is by the environment, your thoughts, or
your pre sleep routine, there are multiple factors involved. Many people have their own
techniques that work well for them and some doctors have recommendations of their own. The
purpose of this paper is to investigate and show the effectiveness of paced breathing and
breathing techniques on sleep, this will take into account peer reviewed research, course and
lecture materials. In a study used to determine the efficacy of paced breathing on insomnia and
vagal activity 14 people with self reported insomnia (SRI) and 14 people who reported to be
good sleepers (GS) were utilized to test the hypotheses that paced breathing would aid those
with insomnia in falling asleep (Tsai, Kuo, Lee, Yang, 2014). The study measured variables such
as sleep quality, sleep effectiveness, Heart rate variability, and cardiac vagal tone. For the
individuals to be allowed in the SRI group they had to have difficulty falling asleep, staying
asleep, or trouble with waking up too early and not being able to go back to sleep more than 3
times per week, for 6 continuous months. All subjects of the study had to be between 20 25
years old and have a BMI within the normal range for their height and weight (18.5 24.5 Kg/m^).
The subjects all had regular times that they went to bed and woke up and none reported having
any history of sleep disorders such as sleep apneaor periodic limb movement, substance abuse,

Is Technology Good Or Bad
Leslie Zuniga
College English
Spindler
December 13, 2017
Is Technology Good or Bad For Us? Technology has been around for a very long time now. In
some way or another, it s been a part of people s lives nowadays whether it s cell phones, tv,
computers, tablets, we all own one or more of these things. Digital electronics started between
the late 1950 s and 1970 s. According to Forbes, the first document which included the discussion
of building a computer was on June 30, 1945. Back in the day, technology wasn t as popular or
used as it is now. It amazes me to see how much it has grown. From box Tv s to flat screen tvs to
smart tv s that can connect to other online sites such as youtube, and Netflix. Phones have gone
from house phones, to flip phones, to smartphones. It s hard to believe sometimes how far
technology has grown. Technology overall, is good for high school, college students. It helps
them in many ways one is being able to do research online. My question has always been whether
technology is good or bad for younger generations by Dr. Manny Alvarez. As said by him, nearly
every modern parent has given a tablet or smartphone to a child for entertainment. By entertainment,
he means letting them watch movies, and cartoons. Almost every parent that I know has done this
at least once. A lot has to do with the baby being grumpy and parents using technology as an
entertainment for them to not cry. Alvarez does state that parents allowing their children to use

Compare And Contrast Poseidon And Hades
It all started when Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades were fighting over the amount of power they
wanted to have. Zeus believed that he was the most worthy because he was the god of the sky and
weather. Zeus also believed he should be the most powerful because of his lightning bolt, this was
his weapon. Poseidon wasn t too thrilled that Zeuswas power hungry because Poseidon believed that
being the godof the sea and earthquakes. Poseidon also had a trident as a weapon. The third god
was Hadesand he also believed that he should be the one in charge. Hades was the god of the
underworld. All three gods were very powerful and also very power hungry. All three gods
decided that they would play games to decide who would receive the most power. They decided

Essay On When Cutting Access To Health Care
Introduction The article, When Cutting Access to Health Care, There Is a Price to pay in the New
York Times and written by Eduardo Porter highlights the health crisis that is being experienced in
the United States. This has contributed to the low economies due to low productivity since the sick
people cannot work. The article states that in a research conducted by experts, the United Statesis
ranked as having the highest mortality rate (Porter, 2017). Conditions such as heart diseases,
diabetes, and infectious diseases also top in the list. Early deaths have become the norm in
teenagers and young adults, due to health conditions related to obesity, chronic diseases, sexually
transmitted diseases, and hypertension among others.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There has been little progress on funding research programs that aim at necessitating on preventive
measures in preventing the chronic diseases. Most are sponsored by private organizations that
promote healthcare. Therefore, there is the need for a change in the budget to promote good health
of the citizens.
Impacts on the Possible Amendment of the Constitution I believe amending the constitution so
that it meets a balanced federal budget would bring positive effects. For instance, it would help
in solving the persistent problem of the increasing deficits and federal debt. Otherwise, the future
generation would suffer the repercussions since they would have to take part in paying the debt.
This could also limit the chances of the future policymakers to engage in corrupt malpractices
and irresponsible fiscal policies which would instead ensure that there is accountability. The
federal government would also be forced to take quick actions to respond to emergencies and
economic recessions (Brazier, et al., 2017). I also believe that the opposing parties would have to
comply with the passed legislation to meet the Constitution s requirement. However, the only set
back in my view would be the political pressure that would be exerted on the lawmakers especially
the opponents. They would be forced to gimmick the budget to meet the balanced expectation. This
would make them work because the law requires them to do so and not because of their willingness
in doing

Discourse Community Project Paper
Discourse Community Project A discourse community is a community that shares the same
discourses or values or goals as their community. An example of this would be a sports team or
organization. Players of these specific teams all work together to achieve a common goal; to win.
These players have a coach that is a powerful leader and that individual makes them strive to be the
best players they can be. Moreover, it is important for each player to have trust in each other and to
form bonds. They do this through communication. This is an important trait for them because if the
players do not trust their own teammates, there will be no unity. I myself can vouch for these
statements because I was once a part of many teams for multiple years. I was a part of sports
teams throughout my entire adolescence leading all the way to high school. When I had
experiences with my club teams, I came to realize just how important common connections and
goals were for a team to be prosperous and successful. When a team establishes trust and
friendships, they can truly work together as a whole. Often times the teams I was a part of lacked
in this area of bonding. Some of the girls on my soccer team would bicker behind others back and
would also try to compete for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For discourse communities, social media can also act as a bonding experience. For example, there
is an app called GroupMe which allows multiple people in a group to all communicate and send
messages simultaneously. Individuals in this discourse community can talk, chat, and like
comments and it is a way in which a team can stay connected and informed. For example, if
someone forgot something they might have needed in a game, they can use this application to send
a message to all of their teammates at the same time. Through the conversation of new information
this group can always stay informed and ready for whatever they must face

The Diamond Buddhist Of Buddhism
It is apparent that not too many Westerners understand how complex Buddhism truly is. Buddhism
has various traditions with different perceptions of Buddha s teachings and rituals. Buddhism is
practiced by all different types of people, not just monks or people who reside in the East. The
Diamond Buddhist Way Center in Chicago helps display how diverse the Buddhist community is
by providing a more western and contemporary style of Buddhism. The center is located at 4722 N
Malden St, Chicago, IL 60640. The center is part of an international non profit group of over 600
lay centers. The center follows the Vajrayana traditions which can be translated from Sanskrit as the

The head teacher was a western lay member of the center. He had a career outside of his sessions
at the center as well as a family. He wore jeans and a sweater. All the other members of the group
were also western working lay people who wore common American articles of clothing.
The setting of the center was different when compared to the older Buddhist traditions practiced in
temples. The setting was contemporary and western while Buddhist temples and centers that are
more influenced by eastern culture will tend to be located in older buildings with donated furniture.
All the members wore casual clothes and were treated as equals while in Theravada and Mahayana
traditions. The lay people always paid their respects to the monks and nuns of the monasteries by
bowing and giving offerings. The Vajrayana tradition promotes the idea that enlightenment could
be attained by means of the things of this world itself, by means of one s own body, one s own
speech, one s own mind (Strong 206).
The first part of the service was the introduction to the center. Our teacher told us the story of
Gautama Buddha and the history of the center. The organization was founded by Lama Ole Nydahl
who is a Danish Lama (Tibetan Dharma teacher). Lama Ole was the first western student under the
16th Karmapa (His Holiness). The 16th Karmapa told Lama Ole that Buddhism is dying in the east
but, Buddhism has potential to grow in the west because westerners are thinkers.

The Issue Of India Is Illiteracy
Abstract The most significant issue in India is Illiteracy. Literacy along with awareness among
the masses will enable the curb of social evils. Movies have the power to reach massive
audiences, which is why they should, and do, matter so much to society. Only bookish
knowledge is not sufficient to change the society. Gone are the days when we were followers. In
21st century we have to be trendsetter. Every person has his new story. We have to visualize
ourselves. We need to recognize us. This is happened only in cinema. All of life s riddles are
answered in the movies Key words: literacy, trendsetter, recognize, visualize 1. Introduction India
has faced and still facing many social, political and economic issues. However every social
problem is inter related. The most significant issue in India is Illiteracy. Literacy along with
awareness among the masses will enable the curb of social evils. Only by educating the masses,
can there be change and progress in the country. Cinema as the most popular media can directly
influence the masses by making them see the world around them in an artistic way and think
positively and act proactively. Indian cinema which is now a century old has recently undergone a
change and is fast emerging as a delightful medium of instruction, and motivational. Recently many
films have been produced that aim at exploiting and utilizing creativity for educating the people. I
have divided the role of cinema on social welfare under four heads;

The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test Countercultures
Counterculture can be described as a way of life and a set of attitudes that is opposed to the social
norm. In the 1960s, the counterculture started to form to allow those citizens that were unhappy
with the time period to show their disgust with the norm. While many protests going on during this
time period were for equality, peace, and love, the counterculturewas focused more on psychedelics
and sex. The counterculture wanted to become noticed to share their knowledge with others. Ken
Kesey, the main character from the novel The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe, was the
starter of the counterculture. Readers can infer that the dress, popular music, and drugs and thus

Before the 1960s, drug use was typically only found through jazz musicians and some minority
s. The drugs that were used were marijuana, heroine, and cocaine (Ragen 76). However, the FBI
created LSD to help Vietnam veterans with PTSD. Ken Kesey then started using it and
discovered this new experience from the drugs. The drugs created an enlightened vision of the
world. Thus creating the LSD and hallucinogen craze. This phenomenon brought thousands of
teenagers, into San Francisco for a life based on LSD and the psychedelic thing, (Wolfe 11).
Some people saw the LSD movement as the future, considering that thousands of people moved
just to take part in it. However, others only saw this as a current fantasy . They are, if not
playing the cops and robbers game, playing at being outlaws. The state s arbitrary drug laws, like
ordinary standards of dress and decorum, simply give them what they need most: a convention
to flout in order to validate their outlawry, (Ragen 98). Stating this made it seem as if the Merry
Pranksters were posing as rebels. Ken Kesey did end up living back in Oregon, with his wife and
kids. The same spot he started in. The psychedelic era did end, but drug use, however, is still apart
of society today, and the counterculture is to thank for

Comparing The Creation Stories Of Ancient Israelite Views...
Compare and contrast the creation stories in Enuma Elish and in Genesis. In particular, assess
what this comparative work tells us about ancient Israelite views of God and God s creative work.
Genesis 1, the first chapter in the bible, is easily the most well known creation story to come out
of the Ancient Near East. However, that does not mean that it was the only creation story to come
out of that period. The Babylonian epic, the Enuma Elish was one such story. It is in essence a
history of the Babylonian gods, and in particular, one god, Marduk. It was ultimately written to
justify his rise to power as the head of the Babylonian pantheon of gods. This was done in order
to support Babylon s claim to pre eminence above all the other cities in the country (Heidel 1963,
p. 14). Despite emerging from the same period, the two texts are starkly different. The former
portrays an all powerful, transcendent, monotheistic God, while the latter describes a polytheistic
hierarchy of gods who reach their ends through violence and conflict. The differences between the
Enuma Elish and Genesis 1 are so vast and endless that there is no real reason to discuss about
their literary dependence or mythological similarities (EOR, p. 2811). Rather, the Enuma Elish is
better enlisted as a tool of comparison in order to highlight the utterly different and radical nature of
the ancient Israelite religion as compared to the common religious beliefs circulating the Near East.

  • 3. Persuasive Essay On Risk Taking My theme report looks at the issues of taking risks in order to overcome stereotypes, poor decisions from the past, and the make progress in life. I learned from the theme study that if you take risks and if you have the right personal qualities you can change your world personally, and influence others positively. The four films I watched for this report were Les Intouchables,Life of a King,12 years a slave and they all showed me the consequences of risktaking which were either loss or great rewards in life.some of the results of risk taking I have discovered from these movies are it can change your personality, leads to wealth and money, second chances in life and mostly you take possession of something you once lost. A significant connection across the texts is the positive consequences in life that come from taking risks. The first similarity I see is that risk taking leads to happiness and earning a new life. We see this in both 12 years a slave and The Hurricane. We see this positive consequence from risk taking in life of a king where Eugene earns back love from his children and got his family back. This positive outcome is similar to 12 years a slave when Solomon is returned (right at the end) to his family. From the dialogue between Eugene and Katrina daughter we can see how desperate and self accusatory Eugene is feeling about his son Marco being in prison when Katrina says I wanted to come tell you in person. Marco s locked up. He s been in juvenile ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Virgin and The Gipsy Written by D.H. Lawrence Essay The Virgin and The Gipsy Written by D.H. Lawrence This novel is very intriguing and teaches lessons of morality, religion, and of life and death intended for those with imagination and insight. The author s style contributes deeply to the intrigue and true meaning to this novel. The author s use of imagery makes tensions in the story vivid and emphatic. In this story there is a re occurring tension between religion and desire. The tension between religion and desire is most clearly demonstrated between the characters of Yvette and the rector. Yvette was brought up in a world of religious conventions and beliefs, an environment of forgiveness, love, and morality. This world is later realized to truly be a world of repression towards ... Her wants and need to be seen or recognized as a woman of flesh and blood, and not a symbol of innocence like the way her father molded Lucille. Life and death are also described very well with imagery. Cynthia was described as a sign of life, because she was true to her heart and her desires, while the matter was described as a symbol of death. The contrast between Cynthia and the matter is very descriptive and reflects the author s use of imagery very well. The narrator describes Cynthia as a great glow, a flow of life ; #8230; ;like a sun in the home ; #8230; ; always associating her presence with brightness #8230;.and glamour. ;(pgs.5 8). These descriptions of Cynthia give a sense of life and warmth. The author created an image for the reader so wonderfully that when this glamorous creature left; she took all life with her. The rector turned bitter and resentful because in the rector s eyes Cynthia conveyed purity and freshness, when she left she took all her pure qualities with her and she left behind a nettle ;, a toad ;, and a gross ; woman to take her place, the matter. In contrast to Cynthia the matter appears to be destructive, ugly, nosy, and insignificant, the utmost representation of death. It is when the matter comes to take over the lives of the Saywell s they all move to the rectory. The rectory was described by the narrator to be dark, and never fresh. • 5. Essay about What Really Happened During the First... There can be countless records of the same event, and while many times each record is different, there are also incidents in which one needs to know every record to piece together what really happened. The story of the first Thanksgiving takes place in 1621, and is generally known as a meal that was shared between the Pilgrims and the Indians. For the Pilgrims, this was a harvest festival, much like one they would have had in England. For the Indians, it was a show of hospitality from the Pilgrims, similar to what they would expect from visiting another Indian tribe. With being told only that, one can already see that there are already two very different histories of the same event recorded. Of greater interest, perhaps, are the different... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The History Channel s Desperate Crossing tells the story of the Pilgrims, their journey to Plymouth, their horrible first year, and finally, the first Thanksgiving. Desperate Crossing follows the accounts of both Winslow and Bradford fairly well, but begins to deviate slightly. They show that the Pilgrims and Indians played games, drank, and raced, and competed together, some of which are only vaguely and briefly alluded to by Winslow, and never by Bradford. The History Channel also shows a much more tense situation than the impression given from Bradford and Winslow. According to the History Channel, everything from Massasoitshowing up with his ninety some men and the Pilgrims firing their arms is all a display of strength from both sides. The History Channel obviously takes some liberties in their presentation of history. Winslow and Bradford do not mention anything about the clothing worn, if there was any drinking involved, if there was silverware, where the feasts were held, and many other seemingly trivial details. Desperate Crossing makes some assumptions on what took place in 1621, but it does quote both Winslow and Bradford word for word. While we re shown a picture that may or may not actually represent what took place at the first Thanksgiving, at the very least, we re given Winslow s and Bradford s descriptions of it. The History Channel used what was already known from the eye witness accounts combined with what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Fanny in Jane Austen s Mansfield Park Essay amp;#8220;FANNY EMERGES VICTORIOUS SIMPLY BECAUSE THE OTHERS FALTER ; (MARY POOVEY) DO YOU AGREE WITH THIS READING OF FANNY amp;#8217;S ROLE IN amp;#8216;MANSFIELD PARK amp;#8217; Mansfield Park has sometimes been considered as atypical of Jane Austen as being solemn and moralistic. Poor Fanny Price is brought up at Mansfield Park with her uncle and aunt. Where only her cousin Edmund helps her with the difficulties she suffers from the rest of the family, and from her own fearfulness and timidity. When the sophisticated Crawfords (Henry and Mary) visit the Mansfield neighbourhood, the moral sense of each marriageable member of the Mansfield family is tested in various ways, but Fanny emerges unscathed. This may be moderated by the history of displacement Jane Austen has provided for Fanny: the years of intimidation she has endured from Mrs Norris and her dependence on Edmund, whose kindness comes with instructions for her of how she should behave. As a result of Edmunds amp;#8217; coaching, Fanny amp;#8217;s moral attitudes in general are over determined, so it is quite easy for us to think of her as modelling a amp;#8216;conduct manual amp;#8217;. In order to access to these advantageous opportunities, students in high school work diligently in order to maintain high grades. As a consequence, distractions, and even worse, falling behind, can be disastrous. Many of these said distractions however, are fellow students themselves. Just as many students strive for excellence, others barely pass for mediocracy, and they drag diligent students down in their apathy of school. • 8. Analysis Of Editha By William Dean Howells And The Yellow... Realism is the art of exposing the hardcore truth in a form of literature while keeping it creative in its fashion. Realism, in itself is a type of literature I am the fondest of because although the truth hurts sometimes, it will always be better than a sweet lie. Most of the literary realism I have experienced has worked hand in hand with romantics as it exposes the truth behind marriages in the 18th and 19th centuries. Two stories I have read that stood out the most to me on the grounds of literary realism are: Editha by William Dean Howellsand The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Editha by William Dean Howells, will go down as one of many strong points of evidence when it comes down to literary realism. This comes into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Marriage was a major key as well because it showed how marriage was set up and how women were domesticated and voices were silent. That was a real eye opener because woman didn t have any rights and was basically to stay silent and do what they are told by their spouse. In essence, literary realism is put in place to give its readers a real place of how life was or how something occurs in the pass. The two stories that gave me a good depiction of what realism is are: Editha by William Dean Howells, and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The two stories put things in perspective when it comes to life in the nineteenth century and the problems that came along with it. Which are so unfortunate in some cases but it gives us the readers the raw truth. There is a thing that occurs in stories that give you a since of humor while still giving you an ultimate message. Mark Twain has become the connoisseur of this term and uses it in a very unique way to show his readers that there can always be humor in your writing even when you think it s impossible. The term is satire which in my own words mean putting humor and information in way that makes you think. I have found this prominent in two of Mark Twain s books: The Good Little Boy, and The Bad Little Boy. These stories give its readers satire ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. A Successful Man As A Self Made Man The self made man is often portrayed as a story of rags to riches. A person who overcomes any obstacle thrown at him/her and defies all odds. These stories incite a reaction in readers, often leaving them in awe. How can a person become so successful, even though the universe is seemingly against them? The truthMalcolm Gladwelluncovered in his novel Outliers is the people at the top of the ladder did not have everything stacked against them. Gladwell says that there is no such concept as a self made man. Successful people have been helped along the way by a variety of reasons, such as how wealthy their family was, to their birth month. While I feel that there is no such thing as a self made man because circumstance and motivation are a key factor in how successful one becomes, I feel as if a person s luck has a lot to deal with them thriving in their career. In addition, throughout Outliers it becomes apparent that the circumstances people have been born into assists them to surpass any competition. For example, technology legends such as Bill Gates, Eric Schmidt, Vinod Khosla, and Steve Jobs were all born in a one year time span. What a crazy coincidence that four of the most successful men in technology were all born so close to one another. • 11. The Purpose of Propaganda in Today s Society Propaganda in today s society serves the same purpose as it did many years ago, and that purpose is to promote a fitting solution to a problem or to sell an idea or item. There are various types of propaganda in the world. The main way that propaganda is advertised would be the media. Whether it be television, newspapers, radio etc . the promoter advertiser will always find a way to promote their idea or product. You also have seven basic sections or types of propaganda; transfer, testimonial, glittering generalities, plain folks, bandwagon, name calling and card stacking. Each of these is used in propaganda whether it is current and modern art forms such as Nikeв„ў commercials or from 100 years ago in political cartoons. Each of the seven types of propaganda differs and is unique in their its own way. Propaganda is, has always been, and shall continue to be, a huge part of the advertising world of society. Transfer is a type of propaganda in which the media utilizes a person or object that people find good natured or intriguing, and they associate the person or object with a product. In this form of propaganda, symbols are constantly being utilized. Most political campaign promotion posters contain the transfer category. Some ads such as icy hot and cleaning products use well known people or well known people s names to promote their product. Take Shaquille O Neal s commercials for the Icy Hot patches for example. Closed Loop Essay Abstract Closed loop feedback control approaches allow precise, real time control of neural activity pattern to lock spiking activity to specific target spiking rate within neural network. This approaches enable investigators to tune the internal brain state into a desired state, induce or disrupt the related frequency of neural network in order to achieve a specific functionality. Here we implement a continuous, precise closed loop feed back control to lock the firing rate at specific targeted spiking activities in moto cortex of isoflurane anesthetized rats and in a computational network level model. We found that controllability of neural activity strikingly varies as neural state changes, furthermore we found it trade off between... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Why does a quiescent animal evoke a larger response and adaptation comparing to an active and awake animal? There is a hypothesis that when cortex maintains the synchronized state in an anesthetized and quiescent awake animal, synapses are often in resting state so they are electrically less active. Therefore, they can save energy to perform other functions [26, 27]. Also, when the cortex evokes a large response to the first stimulus in a high repetitive stimulus within synchronization, it leaves less energy for response to other stimuli in the train therefore the response would suppress stronger in synchronized than the desynchronized state. Despite apparent complex state dependency of cortical response, investigators developed a simple excitable model to predict subsequent sensory response using background ongoing activity prior to the presentation of stimuli, they estimated the parameters of the model using spontaneous activity prior to the onset of stimuli. Model dynamics was changed to reproduce different cortical states, a nonlinear, self exciting system generated synchronized state and a linear system in reproduced desynchronized states. response to an isolated unattended stimulus was quantitatively predicted on a trial by trial basis using a simple dynamical system, it was shown that response is generated based on the same dynamics as spontaneous activity [28]. Future projections are made based on the prospected sales hence profits by the company. Due to the fact that the sales of sportswear varies, the company cannot easily project its future growth as well as predict the profits it will make in future (Plunkett, 2009). In addition to this, the political and financial instability that is making headwinds in key worldwide markets is also a contributing factor to the inability of the company to come up with precise projections. It looks more Europe since it has identity with the company s EMEA direct business where CSC has continuous exertions to revitalize the Columbia brand, and in South America regarding import limitations and money obligations in key wholesaler markets. The other factor is the continuous change in the exchange rates for the foreign currencies. This changes with time and is quite irregular. This implies that no single firm can come up with its financial plan based on accurate exchange rates. This has to be subjected to some approximations that could interfere with the company budget in the long term basis. There exist many more factors that are to be put into consideration. I agree with Foster s first explanation of why we sleep. • 16. Newton s Laws of Motion An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force (Newton s First Law). To determine if a person should run or walk, you will have to understand the Second Law of Motion. The second law states that force equals mass times acceleration. In order for a person of a certain mass to accelerate, that person must use some force, so the force must overcome gravity, friction, and be larger than the mass of the person trying to move (Newton s Second Law of Motion). If you want to walk or run you will need a bigger force (В¶ 4). To walk is not as hard as running, so less force is needed to succeed in doing it (Forester). This leads us to the third law of motion, for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction (Newton s Third Law). Another concept of Physics is moving water. For example, flushing the toilet, waterfalls and dams. Flushing a toilet is a great example of transferring energy. Usually on most toilets there is tan on the back of it filled with water. Water that is stored is a great example of potential energy and no kinetic energy. Once toilet is flushed, it gives the water momentum. From waterfalls and dams we can produce hydropower. It is a renewable energy source that converts kinetic energy from falling water into electricity. From the water momentum pushes against the turbine s blades to switch ... • 17. Their Eyes Were Watching God By Zora Neale Hurston Essay In Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, as well as in modern times, there are many struggles surrounding gender, social class, and race. Throughout the entirety of this novel, Hurston describes every aspect of Janie s life, in an attempt to show how young girls are transformed into women. Hurston did not describe the physical transformation, but instead tackled the much more complicated mental transformation. At the beginning of the novel, the reader is greeted with a seemingly innocent little girl named Janie Crawford. She was stretched on her back beneath the peartree soaking in the alto chant of the visiting bees, the gold of the sun and the panting breath of the breeze (Hurston 16) That just screams innocence. This little girl is just like a normal little girl, she is fanaticizing over the idea of being in love, and finding her prince charming. While she was growing up, Janie did not have a very good example, or an example at all, of what true love is. Janie never met her parents, and was raised by her Nanny , a womanwith very old timer beliefs. Janie s nanny was very strict about these things as well, she wanted Janie to be better than her peers, and have more material possessions than anybody else. This is a very selfish way to raise a child up, but Nanny knew no better, she was just doing what she considered best for Janie. I do not think executing a criminal would ever be considered morally permissible according to the divine command theory. The Second Sex By Simone De Beauvoir Summary In both the worlds of existential feminism and radical feminism, the housewife is separated a degree below other women, as a figure deemed lesser, or even other, form women within the feminist movement. In Simone de Beauvoir s 1949 novel The Second Sex, the housewife embodies the feminine other, a woman who takes the reason men subjugated women, embraces it, and then uses it to her advantage. She becomes the example of how women adapt and survive in the patriarchy, and the women who sacrifices her autonomy to live in comfort and safety, rather than attempt to reform society. Beauvoir makes the housewife the definition of the feminine other to justify how women sacrifice their autonomy and ability to obtain transcendence if they remain complacent in male society. What defines women as the other is not found in the state of nature or social history but in her biology and the overbearing consequences of her ability to become pregnant. In Beauvoir s work, Women are inherently different from men in the biology and how omnipresent it is in their lives, and biology defines women because at the time she wrote The Second Sex the consequences of sex permeated every aspect of daily life. With birth control still difficult to obtain, the consequences of sex are at the forefront of a women s mind, and if she wants to be sexually active, she must constantly consider the impacts another life will have on her finances, her home, her relationships and her work, if she is able to find it. Each year, the State Department selects 110,000 applicants from all qualified entries. However, once 50,000 immigrant visas are issued, or the fiscal year ends, the lottery is closed. Immigrant visas are not available for people whose country of origin sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the last five years. Many people think they can show up at a U.S. embassy or border post, describe why they d make a good addition to U.S. society, and be welcomed in. Unfortunately, this is the exact opposite of how the U.S. immigration system works. Instead, people who want to come to the U.S., whether temporarily or permanently, must determine whether they fit into eligibility categories for either permanent residence (a green card) or for a temporary stay ( nonimmigrant visa ). Then they must submit an application in fact, often a series of applications to one or more of the U.S. agencies responsible for carrying out the immigration laws. These include U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), which has offices across the United States, and the U.S. Department of State (DOS), which manages consulates and embassies around the world. The Raped Girl s Father is a disturbing poem about a girl who is unluckily raped, and how this brings incredible anger and shame to her father. Written by Bruce Dawe, it contains an inept use of thought, feeling and language. It is an absorbing evocation of the girl s feelings and her horrendous suffering, and how her identity has changed as a consequence of the rape for herself, her father and society. In the first two lines, an aural image is employed to indicate a never ending anger in the girl s father. So the girl lies in that darker dark , where there is simply no hope or relief of the grief that she is feeling. What is this darker dark ? This concept causes the reader to assume she has given up and is powerless; that this dark is completely evil, and damaging her. A victim, she lies in what she believes will not cease. For every second of her father s brutal anger she feels his jaws rasp on the naked bone. Another auditory image, this is an incredibly harsh sound that evokes disturbing violence, a vicious sense of him biting and cutting into her. Furthermore, the girl feels pain to his anger, right to her naked bone or her core. She is raw and exposed, and a disturbing impression of death, violation and cruelty is conveyed. Because of the rape and the consequence of her father s anger, she has lost all innocence and is utterly vulnerable. In a crescendo of pain, devastation and hysteria, the girl mentions her terror in reliving the rape when going through the justice system. During those two weeks, I collected data and examined how I could help reduce my overall ecological footprint and use of environmental resources through propositions, research, and online calculations. Solid Waste Current Routine: During the week, I begin my day by walking to Mean Greens cafeteria for breakfast. I am provided with the dishes for my meal, which are all reusable and therefore I do not contribute any waste in regards to those. I do however use multiple napkins during my meals. Often, I threw away all the napkins I took, including the ones I did not use. I only used two of the five napkins I got every meal. I also left food scraps on my plate, which were thrown away and contributed to compost solid waste. I also go to Mean Greens cafeteria for lunch and dinner and have similar habits when it comes to how much solid waste I produce during those meals. Comparing Rousseau And Mill On Liberty Essay The term civil or social liberties is one that garners a lot of attention and focus from both Rousseau and Mill, although they tackle the subject from slightly different angles. Rousseau believes that the fundamental problem facing people s capacity to leave the state of nature and enter a society in which their liberty is protected is the ability to find a form of association that defends and protects the person and goods of each associate with all the common force, and by means of which each one, unitingwith all, nevertheless obeys only himself and remainsas free as before (Rousseau 53). As he states in Book I, Chapter VIII, although in this state he deprives himself of several advantages given to him by nature, he gains such great ones...that changed him from a stupid, limited animal into an intelligent being and a man (Rousseau 56). What man posses in nature is an unlimited physical freedom to pursue everything that tempts him, although this is viewed by Rousseau as almost an enslavement towards one s own instincts. In a civil state man is benefited by substituting justice for instinct in his behaviour and giving his actions the morality they previously lacked (Rousseau 54). In acting in accordance with the general will man is granted the most important form of all freedoms, civil freedom. Freedom of individuality is seen as the essential form of freedom according to Mill. The freedom of thought and speech, discussed in Chapter 2, do play a pivotal role in ensuring freedom, however, they are viewed more as a means to an end rather than being something that should be pursued for its own good. The freedom of individuality is essential for human progress and development and it is only the cultivation of individuality which produces, or can produce, well developed human beings (Mill 70). Sleep can be effected in a number of ways whether it is by the environment, your thoughts, or your pre sleep routine, there are multiple factors involved. Many people have their own techniques that work well for them and some doctors have recommendations of their own. The purpose of this paper is to investigate and show the effectiveness of paced breathing and breathing techniques on sleep, this will take into account peer reviewed research, course and lecture materials. In a study used to determine the efficacy of paced breathing on insomnia and vagal activity 14 people with self reported insomnia (SRI) and 14 people who reported to be good sleepers (GS) were utilized to test the hypotheses that paced breathing would aid those with insomnia in falling asleep (Tsai, Kuo, Lee, Yang, 2014). The study measured variables such as sleep quality, sleep effectiveness, Heart rate variability, and cardiac vagal tone. For the individuals to be allowed in the SRI group they had to have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or trouble with waking up too early and not being able to go back to sleep more than 3 times per week, for 6 continuous months. All subjects of the study had to be between 20 25 years old and have a BMI within the normal range for their height and weight (18.5 24.5 Kg/m^). From box Tv s to flat screen tvs to smart tv s that can connect to other online sites such as youtube, and Netflix. Phones have gone from house phones, to flip phones, to smartphones. It s hard to believe sometimes how far technology has grown. Technology overall, is good for high school, college students. It helps them in many ways one is being able to do research online. My question has always been whether technology is good or bad for younger generations by Dr. Manny Alvarez. Impacts on the Possible Amendment of the Constitution I believe amending the constitution so that it meets a balanced federal budget would bring positive effects. For instance, it would help in solving the persistent problem of the increasing deficits and federal debt. Otherwise, the future generation would suffer the repercussions since they would have to take part in paying the debt. This could also limit the chances of the future policymakers to engage in corrupt malpractices and irresponsible fiscal policies which would instead ensure that there is accountability. The federal government would also be forced to take quick actions to respond to emergencies and economic recessions (Brazier, et al., 2017). I also believe that the opposing parties would have to comply with the passed legislation to meet the Constitution s requirement. However, the only set back in my view would be the political pressure that would be exerted on the lawmakers especially the opponents. They would be forced to gimmick the budget to meet the balanced expectation. This would make them work because the law requires them to do so and not because of their willingness in doing ... An example of this would be a sports team or organization. Players of these specific teams all work together to achieve a common goal; to win. These players have a coach that is a powerful leader and that individual makes them strive to be the best players they can be. Moreover, it is important for each player to have trust in each other and to form bonds. They do this through communication. This is an important trait for them because if the players do not trust their own teammates, there will be no unity. I myself can vouch for these statements because I was once a part of many teams for multiple years. I was a part of sports teams throughout my entire adolescence leading all the way to high school. When I had experiences with my club teams, I came to realize just how important common connections and goals were for a team to be prosperous and successful. In particular, assess what this comparative work tells us about ancient Israelite views of God and God s creative work. Genesis 1, the first chapter in the bible, is easily the most well known creation story to come out of the Ancient Near East. However, that does not mean that it was the only creation story to come out of that period. The Babylonian epic, the Enuma Elish was one such story. It is in essence a history of the Babylonian gods, and in particular, one god, Marduk. It was ultimately written to justify his rise to power as the head of the Babylonian pantheon of gods. This was done in order to support Babylon s claim to pre eminence above all the other cities in the country (Heidel 1963, p. 14). Despite emerging from the same period, the two texts are starkly different. The former portrays an all powerful, transcendent, monotheistic God, while the latter describes a polytheistic hierarchy of gods who reach their ends through violence and conflict. The differences between the Enuma Elish and Genesis 1 are so vast and endless that there is no real reason to discuss about their literary dependence or mythological similarities (EOR, p. 2811). Rather, the Enuma Elish is better enlisted as a tool of comparison in order to highlight the utterly different and radical nature of the ancient Israelite religion as compared to the common religious beliefs circulating the Near East.
