woman begged the girls to not leave, for fear that the man she worked for would come to her

When I was born, I had two very large and dark birthmarks on my legs. My mom recalls the story
as thinking the birthmarks were dirt and attempting to scrub them off until she realized they
were part of my skin. I even recall one time being in a playground and as I was waiting to drink
from the water fountain, another little girl said let the brown girl go first . Throughout my life,
my skin color changes depending the season and how long I am in the sun. I ve always wanted
my skin to be darker even though my family viewed having darker skin as negative. My earliest
memories of ethnicity come from being in middle school. There were often ethnicity battles among
the different ethnic groups as to which group was the best. My schools often consisted of Puerto
Ricans, Dominicans, Mexicans, and other South American countries. We took pride in our
