Character Analysis of Rose Rose holds the Maxson family together as if she was the glue of the
family. She treats everyone the same, whether they are kin to each other or not. She looks past the bad
things in order to stay positive. Rose always has something to eat laying around the kitchen for anyone
and everyone that is in the Maxson house even if they are not family. Rose, Troy s foil, brings out the
good in Troy, and she does her best to keep him from doing things he should not do. Rose keeps the
Maxson family together with her kind and loving heart. Rose is a very opionated lady, yet she gives
her opinion out of love. When Troy gripes at her about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Well come on...I ll make a batch of biscuits, (26). Rose steadily tries to be the best mother that she can
be for the Maxson family and not just take care of herself. She represents the primary care giver of the
Maxson household by cooking for everybody and bringing the whole family in together to eat. Okay,
Troy...you re right. I ll take care of your baby for you...cause...like you say...she s innocent...and you
can t visit the sins of the father upon the child. A motherless child has got a hard time, (79). By Rose
saying and doing this, it just proves how loving and tender hearted she is. Even though Rose is not the
child s mother, she still wants what is best for the baby. Stop that yelling. You gonna wake up Raynell.
I just got her to sleep, (80). This shows that Rose has fully accepted Raynell as her daughter. Rose
does not see Raynell as just Troy s daughter but also hers too. Rose says, talking about Lyons, Let the
boy have ten dollars, Troy, (19). This shows how loving and caring Rose acts towards Troy s son.
Rose and Troy clearly do not have enough money to be giving it out, but she encourages Troy to give
some to Lyons because she cares about everyone. Rose is a very good hearted person who uses all of
her characterisitcs to keep everyone in the family together and keep them in check. Rose does all she

Marketing Strategy Of Planet M
In terms of the marketing products and the services the brand Planet M is very successful in the Indian
context. As per the latest data concern, the company registered an annual footfall of more than 8.5
million people in their retail stores across India with a conversion rate of more than 40 per cent. In fact
it is one of the highest in the Indian retail sector. For the expansion of the retail market in India and the
growth of the market share of the company, they have adopted many marketing strategies, which can
be highlighted as:
Celebrity endorsement is one of the main strategies in the Planet M retail shops. The retail brands

This aspect not only deals with the store layout and the ambience created, but also with visual
merchandising. Visual merchandising is the orderly, systematic way of putting stock on display in the
retail store. Planet M presents the store as per the season and occasions like; on Diwali store is
decorated with candles and flowers, on Christmas store is decorated with stars, ribbons, balloons,
Christmas tree and on Independence Day and Republic Day store is decorated with green, orange, and
white balloons, etc. that attract the customers.
The support services that a retailer offers have become very important today. The credit policies and
the product returns policies need to be clearly marketed; buzzwords in the industry are adapted
quickly today and all these are aimed at enhancing customer service. In Planet M stores, the product
range is good and availability of the products is very easy. Planet M provides the low price compared
to the other retailers competing in the music merchandising. Planet M provides the good services to
their customer like; baggage counter, parking, product, help line, etc.
Another very popular marketing strategy adopted by Planet M in all the retail shops is the discounts
and sales. They offer discounts and sales in their product to attract the customers. Moreover there are
always surprise gifts and goodies with the purchase to encourage the customers.

The Skewed Monopoly Summary
As senior biology major Grace Avecilla rolled the dice over and over again and still ended up in jail,
she began to realize that the skewed Monopoly game she was playing was a good metaphor for
income inequality. Avecilla and almost 40 other students participated in Volunteer UCF and UCF
Alternative Break Program s event Oppression Monopoly on March 22, which simulated both income
inequality and equal opportunity. It was a part of Alternative Spring Break Program s Active Citizen
Week, which is a week of events that encourage students to do more in the community. It s one of my
favorite events of the season. It allows students to actually experience income inequality in a safe way
instead of just hearing about it, said Nicholas Shepard,

A New Form Of Leadership
Paul Ryan, current Speaker of the House, holds an antithetic leadership style to solve issues in the
future of congress. However, it is not a new form of leadership we have seen in politics. Paul Ryan is a
Republican and the Republicans do currently have power in the Senate and House of Representatives.
Clearly though, the Republican Party is divided and struggles to solve current issues in congress.
Currently this is due to collective action issues such as, the need for information, time, and
coordination currently in Republican Party. What Paul Ryan has done to solve these issues so far is,
unify republicans, and at the same time solve collective action issues and other problems thus far by
giving congressional committees the power to achieve these issues. The history of Congressional
power from 1890 to present day has varied from strong individuals, to strong committees. From 1890
to about 1910 the speaker would heavily influence the House of Representatives. Speakers had the
power to appoint the committees to chairs, and had control of legislative agenda s. But in 1910, a
revolt had happened against Speaker Joe Cannon. Power shifted to the committees whose leaders were
based on seniority. From the 1920 s to the 1970 s party influence was very weak and this was known
as the era of committee government. Beginning in the 1970 s preferences of the party and its members
became more similar. They did not have to be as concerned with the leader s preferences, because it

Chemical Compounds That Transmit Neural Signals From One...
3.3.1 Neurotransmitter indicators
Neurotransmitters are endogenous chemical compounds that transmit neural signals from one neuron
to another. Many neurotransmitters are amino acids, such as glutamate, glycine and GABA, or
biogenic amines, such as dopamine and serotonin, or even peptides and proteins, such as somatostatin
and substance P {Snyder 1979}. Binding of neurotransmitters may either inhibit or excite the
postsynaptic neurons. Among the numerous neurotransmitters, glutamate is the major excitatory
amino acid neurotransmitter in mammalian neural systems {Cotman 1986}. The first genetically
encoded neurotransmitter for glutamate was reported in 2005 {Okumoto, 2005 #292}. Upon binding
to glutamate, the indicator converts the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
IGluSnFR was engineered in vitro for maximized fluorescence response, and it could robustly detect
glutamate release events with sufficient SNR and kinetics for in vivo imaging in worms, zebrafish,
and mice {Marvin, 2013 #864}. Notably, bacteria express a variety of periplasmic binding proteins
including ones for GABA, acetylcholine, glycine and other small molecules that serve as
neurotransmitter in the brain . A design principle similar to that used for iGluSnFR may one day
produce a series of genetically encoded indicators for probing various neurotransmitters with spine
sized spatial resolution.
Instead of probing the neurotransmitters directly, one could probe the neurotransmitter binding events
by coupling it to a different optical readout using a multi component system. Nguyen et al. described a
multi component system, called cell based neurotransmitter fluorescent engineered reporters
(CNiFERs), to monitor in situ neurotransmitter receptor activation {Nguyen, 2010 #921}. CNiFERs
are engineered cultured cells that stably express an M1 acetylcholine receptor and the GECI TN XXL.
The system utilizes the GPCR cascade to convert receptor activity into a rise in cytosolic Ca2+ which
is reported by TN XXL. Nguyen et al. injected CNiFERs in the frontal cortex of the adult rat and used
CNiFERs to probe the change of cholinergic signaling induced by an atypical neuroleptic drug
{Nguyen, 2010 #921}. Substitution of the M1 receptor with other Cys loop receptors produced

The Destructive Sprawl of the Suburbia on the Environment...
The Destructive Sprawl of the Suburbia on the Environment Growing up in Northern Toronto, it had
never occurred to me that the neighbourhood I was living in was planned long before my neighbors or
I decided to move and build this a community. As I grew older and I started to notice new areas being
built I noticed that from afar those hundreds of houses were being built and organized in preparation
for hundreds of families. Personally, I am interested in the development of subdivisions and the
suburbs due to my family owning a property around the area of Lake Simcoe. It seems as though that
with every passing year it takes another few kilometers or minutes to escape the confines of the city

The end of the war opened new avenues for the American public due to new innovations in technology
and organization (Marshall, 1979). Abraham Levitt, an American entrepreneur, established a
community in Nassau County, Long Island. Levitt converted former farmland into a suburban
community where thousands of individuals could find housing. Approximately, 17,000 houses were
built and sold or rented to middle income families (Naish, 2014). Among the American population,
there was a desire for individual freedom following World War II. One being able to attain a large
living space and accumulate material wealth became engrained in the American Dream. Many realized
that the suburbs and living in planned subdivisions of land was an affordable option. This led to the
growth of suburbia throughout the late 20th century. These same desires are what allow the suburbs to
flourish today. The US Census Bureau published in 2002 The Demographic Trends of the 20th
Century. In the 20th century, the American population grew from 76 million to 281 million, with 80%
of the 281 million living in urban areas. It is the suburbs that represented the largest degree of growth.
Suburbia houses over 50% of the American people (Hobbs et al., 2014).

Historical And Cultural Context In The Great Gatsby By F....
Contexts often help readers to understand and perceive the text the way it was intended by the author
to be perceived. When studying any piece of literature, it is important that there is a basic
understanding of historical and cultural contexts since it plays a crucial part in enhancing the reader s
interpretation or reading of the text. A reader s knowledge and understanding of historical and cultural
contexts can influence and enhance their interpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald s famous classic novel,
The Great Gatsby. A basic understanding of American historical and cultural contexts such as the
Prohibition era, the Jazz Age, Cornelius Vanderbilt and the American Dream, allows a reader to

Understanding the Prohibition era, the prosperity it brought, and it s effects on the American society
during the 1920s enhances my interpretation of The Great Gatsby. Having knowledge about the
Prohibition era allows me to experience the novel through a lens that shows how Fitzgerald portrayed
the 1920s as a time of decayed values. The Prohibition era, dated between mid 1920 to early 1933,
was period in American history when the manufacture, transportation and sale of intoxicating liquors
were banned and forbidden because of the increase in violence and illegal activities. During the
Prohibition, there was a sudden rise in capitalism through illegal sale and production of liquor, which
is known as bootlegging . The character of Jay Gatsby is an example of how Fitzgerald depicted the
decayed values of the 1920s. In the novel, Tom Buchanan accused Gatsby of having little stunts in his
drug stores , he was adamant that Gatsby sold grain alcohol over the counter arguing that its probably
where all of his wealth came from and picked him for a bootlegger (page 109).

Summary Of Saints By Nancy Scheper-Hughes
The typical Irish personality as seen through the ethnography of Nancy Scheper Hughes is similar
among the Irish population. The reason we see these similar traits among the Irish population is
because of the hardships that the people go through as they are raised from children to adults. Ireland
is known for their high rates of diagnosed mental illness. Through the author s fieldwork we are able
to learn about the personality traits found among the Irish. Nancy Scheper Hughes states that, the
Republic of Ireland has the highest hospitalization treatment rate for mental illness in the world
(Scheper Hughes 60). The book titled, Saints, Scholars, and Schizophrenics Mental Illness in Rural
Ireland, talks about the mental illness Schizophrenia and mentions reasons why the Irish population
has been diagnosed with so many cases. Scheper Hughes observes, Schizophrenia is the core problem
more than half of the patients are so diagnosed (Scheper Hughes 60). The reason behind these
diagnosed mental illnesses has a lot to do with the way the Irish are raised. Most of the Irish
population is raised in a similar way, which does not allow them to make decisions for themselves.
There are certain social and cultural values that Irish parents place upon their children, which may be
the reason why there are so many cases of mental illness seen throughout Ireland. One reason that may
affect these children is the pressure put on them by parents. In Irish culture at least one

ratio analysis Essay
Financial Ratios: What They MeanIn assessing the significance of various financial data, managers
often engage in ratio analysis, the process of determining and evaluating financial ratios. A financial
ratio is a relationship that indicates something about a company s activities, such as the ratio between
the company s current assets and current liabilities or between its accounts receivable and its annual
sales. The basic source for these ratios is the company s financial statements that contain figures on
assets, liabilities, profits, and losses. Ratios are only meaningful when compared with other
information.

The most common is the price earnings (P/E) ratio. It is published daily with the transactions of the
New York Stock Exchange, American Stock Exchange, and NASDAQ. These quotations show not
only the most recent price but also the highest and lowest price paid for the stock during the previous
fifty two weeks, the annual dividend, the dividend yield, the price/earnings ratio, the day s trading
volume, high and low prices for the day, the changes from the previous day s closing price.
The price to earnings (P/E) ratio is calculated by dividing the current market price per share by current
earnings per share. It represents a multiplier applied to current earnings to determine the value of a
share of the stock in the market. The price earnings ratio is influenced by the earnings and sales
growth of the company, the risk (or volatility in performance), the debt equity structure of the
company, the dividend policy, the quality of management, and a number of other factors. A company s
P/E ratio should be compared to those of other companies in the same industry. The following is a
listing of some of the ratios to be aware of in analyzing a company s balance sheet and income
statement.

Negative Impact On Graphic Design
In this day and age anything is possible, whereas just a few years ago all we had for creating graphics
were a pencil and paper. The fact that technology is evolving every second means that the way we
design, create and even advertise it is changed. Designer can go a long way, in many different
directions. Even though the innovations introduced have a major positive impact, they do have a
negative one as well. The fact that virtually anyone can use things like graphics tablets, graphics
software and online tutorials causes people to label themselves as graphics designers , and they re not
wrong. In the Digital Age anyone can call themselves that when buying Adobe and designing
something but in the real world they re actually not doing anything extra ordinary because anyone
with at least some creative skills can design, and the keep evolving technology makes it even easier to
DIY Do it yourself. It s becoming easier for amateurs to learn the skills that they need for basic design
. It has a bad impact on the creative industries because instead of asking a professional, you can ask a
friend or a person you know to design something for you, all for a really low price compared with
professional graphic designers. In the olden days it was a much bigger thing to be called a graphics
designer because in their age things like computers and especially computer programs weren t widely
available yet. Designers like Paula Scher, ... , ... , started their careers with handmade

In neither of these cases did the manufacturing departments expect to take all the output of the parts
and accessories farms. Soon both companies by selling such supplies to outsiders had greatly enlarged
their product line. Supplements are by no means the same as extensions. When British Aerospace
bought Rover, wondrous guff was babbled about the transfer of aerospace technology to car
manufacture. If any such transfer took place, it was totally insignificant. Similar false claims were
made by General Motors when it diversified into computer services and electronic defence systems by
buying, respectively, Electronic Data Services and Hughes Aircraft. Both buys, however, proved to be
enormous successes, earning GM large profits both from operations and from the billions eventually
made by spinning off the buys. This doesn t disprove the argument against diversification. It proves
something else: that GM is very good at this game (much better, in fact, than at making and selling
cars). There are businesses which specialise in diversifying, including one Warren Buffett s Berkshire

Reflective Essay On Astronomy
The last time I remember learning about astronomy formally was as far back as elementary school,
where we learned about the basics of our solar system s planets and other ideas about space commonly
known by most people. Having never studied astronomy at a higher level, going into this class felt
similar to traveling to a foreign country, or sailing in foreign waters, so to speak. Many of the concepts
and facts have been things I have had little to no prior knowledge of. But regardless of any of that, I
cannot express the importance of this area of study in my life. In the past I have read comments
online, as well as heard things in real life, about how some subjects have no value in being studied
unless one is majoring in them. While my major is not astronomy, much less even science, I still could
not disagree more with this sort of thought. I can relate to some of the concepts of astronomy on a
very deep and personal level, to the point where my psychological state is affected, and I will explain
these thoughts in detail later. While these areas of great interest have not yet been covered in the
course, I cannot say that I have not found all of the current topics fascinating. As one who has a deep
interest in mathematics, I found a few of the concepts rather thought provoking, and I will again this
later. I will lastly discuss what I thought of the material as a whole, what I got most out of it, and what
my experiences were during and after learning it. Out of everything

Darkness And Darkness In John Milton s Relation To Darkness
Perhaps, within one line, Milton describes the nature of all emitted light; that it must, if we are to call
it light, be considered in relation to darkness and that darkness must be considered in relation to light;
that a thing cannot be without its opposite, since any one member of an antithesis cannot exist without
a counter member, or an anti member; as a white horse cannot be compared to a black one without the
black one being present; A cannot be compared to B unless B is present; by extension, an antithesis
works by expressing two extremities of any one quality, the antithesis of white is black, since, if we
were to evaluate colour, white suggests the prescience of white and the absence of black, and vice
versa. But, to what degree is blackness said to exist in whiteness? Are they two separate qualities? Is
one merely the absence of the other? Is so, the true nature of the antithesis is of one existent thing to a
non existent thing. Suppose we are to compare lightness to darkness: if light is said to exist, as an
emission which illuminates darkness, then light can only be considered as something which
illuminates darkness, and thus can only be considered in relation to darkness; likewise, if we are to
call darkness that thing which covers light, it must be considered in relation to its opposite, which
supposes that both exist; but, if we suppose that both exist, than darkness cannot be the absence of
light but must rather be covering of it. We run into problems,

Explain The Five Key Points Made By The Speaker
1) What are 5 key points made by the speaker? Write a short paragraph for each one The first key
point that the author made is that there is a lot of people in the world that are non informed about what
was going on in the world. He says that people tends to think that things are becoming worst or didn t
change which is not true. He said that there is a need to communicate because the data of what
happening in the world is well aware. He compares the life expectancy and fertility rate of many
countries since 1960. He found out that they is a lot of countries that have improved in term of life
expectancy. As example China and India has improved and are moving toward better health care and
small families like develop countries. He also compared the income distribution in the world and
found out that there wasn t a gap between rich and poor anymore and that there were a lot of countries
that were in the middle and had 24% of the income. Looking at the graph, the actual distribution was
mounded shaped while it used to be a bump. He shows that it is dangerous to use average data because
there is a lot of differences between countries and that policy makers have to take that into
consideration while designing the laws for one region. He thinks that data should be used more often
and that organization should be will willing to release these information s and make it available to the
rest of the world. 2) Read the power point posted on Canvas entitled Politics in the developing

Wong Kar-Wai s Relationship with Genre

film industry, along with Wong s various international influences, in order to argue, Chungking

elements of film genre.
Contextualising genre within the Hong Kong film industry:
Of all the international film industries across the globe Hong Kong is certainly one that is synonyms
with genre cinema. Considering the commercial nature of its film industry, it seems only appropriate
that when discussing Hong Kong cinema as a whole, genre seems to be a frequent and integral part of
the conversation. The Hong Kong film industry was built to turn a profit and has become the dominant
figure in all of East Asian cinema, relying heavily on exporting its films to Mainland China and
Taiwan, as well as local box office sales. Ding Tzann Lii describes this relationship as one of marginal
imperialism and compares the Hong Kong industries hold over East Asia to that of Hollywood s over
the rest of the world. (1998: 125) However, with such a large demand for product Hong Kong has
struggled to produce enough films each year to maintain its industries growth. Production rapidly
became focused on making films quickly, cheaply and with the intention of being sold easily. The
industry became much like a factory, producing films in an assembly line fashion, often pushing films

A question we get very often on our forum is about MMA training videos. Our readers want to know
which is the best set of MMA training DVD s for them available, online or offline. Unfortunately, this
question is very hard to answer. I ll explain in a minute.
But first, let s have a quick look at what MMA is. MMA is short for Mixed Martial Arts. It s a fighting
sport with lots of fans and several shows like UFC, Bellator, M1 Global and Elite XC. UFC has
become so famous that it s even threatening boxing s supremacy in popularity rankings. MMA fighters
employ techniques, holds, grappling moves, submission techniques, kicks and punches from a wide
variety of martial arts and from Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ), Muay Thai and Krav Maga (the Israeli
Defense Force close quarters combat technique) amongst others. Maybe ... Show more content on

Most training videos will focus on one or two styles max. So the right set of training DVD s for you
may not be the same as the one for the next guy. Additionally, some people need training videos to
start to train and ultimately start fighting in a ring. Others want to learn self defense techniques from
the Mixed Martial Arts training DVD s. Others are looking to pick up a few quick pointers to help
them out should they ever get into a street or bar fight, yet others look at it as a preferred way of
working out (subdivided in acquiring body weight and cardio exercise). A minority even looks for
them just to show off with their friends...
Then there are training DVD s and videos for beginners, for intermediary fighters and a few that teach
advanced techniques. This is very important! Trying advanced techniques as a beginner might cause
serious injuries to yourself or your sparring partner. Some of the advanced techniques can cause death
when executed in the wrong way or with excessive force. We recommend that you try or train any new
technique always are very slow speed

African American Shortcomings In America
Of course, those Korean immigrants were only fighting for their own economic survival in America,
too. Yet the assertion was understandable: during the 1970s and 1980s, deindustrialization, which
brought unemployment to the middle class, would only exacerbate the conditions of Los Angeles most
impoverished. The few remaining jobs it left to the slums had been seized and hoarded by Korean
immigrants. In the reality of the situation, however, African Americans, despite their efforts and an
ongoing movement for civil rights, were simply incapable of achieving the same level of
entrepreneurial success of Korean Americans during this time period. The reasons for their
shortcomings in Koreatown, in addition to lacking higher education and professional job experience
many Korean immigrants had at their disposal, were primarily due to the deeply ingrained institution
of prejudice against African Americans. African Americans were helplessly vulnerable to racism
regardless of how hard they worked, they would struggle to compete with other minority groups.
Nevertheless, African Americans continued to criticize Korean Americans as they accumulated the
capital and social mobility necessary to move out of Koreatown. The neighborhood had proved itself a
valuable tool for Korean entrepreneurial ventures, but it still remained a poor urban slum. Besides
thriving Korean businesses, historians Nancy Abelmann and John Lie discovered that Koreatown was
home to the highest crime rate in all of Los Angeles, and a median household income which was half
the California state average and even lower than that of South Central Los Angeles. Other than to keep
families perpetually wary, the district s poor and dangerous conditions served to question Korean
businesses for their seemingly nonexistent contributions on the surrounding community. While Korean
merchants certainly could have helped raise Koreatown out of poverty, they instead escaped with their
families to wealthy suburbs as soon as they had acquired enough capital. These suburban homes might
have marked the first milestones for Korean immigrant families, but more importantly, they justified
African American claims of stolen economic opportunity and further developed

The House Of Bernarda Alba
Federico Garcia Lorca s The House of Bernarda Alba and Henrik Ibsen s A Doll s House both protest
against the confinement of women of their days. Although the Houses are set differently in Spain of
20th century and Norway of 19th century respectively, both the plays relate in illuminating their
respective female protagonists, Adela and Nora, as they eventually develop a sense of individuality
and self expression and emerge as free individuals from repression. The authors attempts allow the
reader audience to gain an insight into the social norms that each protagonist was pitted against. This

Female Serial Killer Essay
During the late 18 centuries, society became more aware of serial murders. At first, the term of serial
murder was only referred to men with specific causes and motives that influenced them to commit
such heinous crimes. The main motive to commit homicide was based on sexual fantasies. However,
years later, women did fall into this category of serial murders but defying the main motive that
characterized men serial killers. The misconceptions that that female serial killers do not exits and that
woman s nature does not let the to engaged in such bestial acts have been discarded. Based on

as midwife and employed all to educational and professional workers had commit homicide. Some of
those professional women are nurses, secretaries or work with infants. Based on research, women with
higher education such as college are most likely to engage on serial murders because they are in
constant interaction with defenses people. According to Schurman Kauflin (2000), states their studied
that nearly 1/3 of FSKs were nurse Harrison, et al (2015). This is one of the reasons why older and
people with ill are target by female serial killers because their lack of physical strength motivates
women to demand silent but dangerous power over them. White and Lester (2012) noted, women are
four times more likely than man to drug their victims, as it may be easier for them to subdue their
targets in this way (Harrison, et al (2015). Those women are known as the angels of death because
they used gentle and discrete means of murder such as lethal injections to carry out their execution.

Persuasive Essay On The American Dream
The phrase The American Dream is relatively old and has a long history, and although its ideas has
changed tremendously throughout the centuries, it still holds great meaning behind it. It not only
symbolizes financial success, but having the freedom to live independently. For some, living the
American Dream means having justice, material possession, or just pursuing everlasting happiness.
The new American Dream requires you to earn opportunity, and is has been more difficult for others
based on their social standing, ethnicity, and race to obtain; as opposed to the past American Dream
which involved optimism and hope for a better life. Each source clearly demonstrates the need for
determination and willpower to overcome barriers and obstacles of life.
In the early years of America, the concept of money and fame was not the American Dream. For the
Puritan minister, John Winthrop, the American Dream was love and unity, creating a utopian society
based on Christian ideals. Throughout A Model of Christian Charity, Winthrop quotes the Bible to
prove that the particular lifestyle of loving and giving is the only way to obtain such an outstanding
utopian society. In A Model of Christian Charity, Matthew 7:12: says, Whatsoever ye would that men
should to you , creating equality within the world (Winthrop, 25). Winthrop believed that if people
were to unite in love, they will be able to change the world in a more positive manner. Furthermore, he
believed the Lord created individuals such as the rich, poor, the powerful, and the weak to help each
other with each of their different strengths. In conclusion, it presented exactly how the Puritans should
treat one another as it would benefit the colonies overall survival. Not only did Winthrop want his
colony to survive, but wanted to set a good example to everyone else. This was his vision of the
perfect American Dream.
Benjamin Franklin demonstrates the possibilities of life in the New World through his own rise from
lower middle class as a youth to one of the most admired men in the world. The American Dream for
Franklin was to be self made and make America more remarkable. Franklin states, I had, on the whole,
abundant reason to be satisfied with my being

The Impact Of Political Machine On The City

U.S. Urban History
Essay: Urban America
Discuss the political machine and its operations in the city, 1865 1939 The political machine is very
powerful in the city and because of how powerful it is that urban United States was able to develop so
much and increase in power in the late 1800 s and early 1900 s. A political machine is system of
political organization based on patronage, the spoils system, and political ties. Sometimes political
machines have a boss and sometimes they may not have a boss, and always have a corps of workers
who depend on the patronage given by government contracts and jobs. Machine politics has existed in
many United States cities for a long time now, but are still in effect in some areas. The rapid growth of
American cities in the late 1800 s and early 1900 s created huge problems for the government that ran
the cities as in most cases in was very poorly structured and could not really give the people what they
needed. It is because of the inability of city government to provide these things to the people that there
was a rise in political machines. These political machines gained support from the population by
providing houses for people who needed them and by also offering people jobs that they desperately
needed. This gave the political machines a lot of power and support from there loyal followers. Voters
are often rewarded with patronage jobs. However, patronage can result in poorer service to the

Oryx And Crake Argumentative Essay
Genetic engineering or genetic enhancement refers to the transfer of genetic material intended to
modify nonpathological human traits (Hanna 1). These enhancements are used to modify human
embryos and during gene therapy. There are currently two different approaches to gene manipulation,
embryo elimination or genetic alteration. There is a choice of either disposing of an embryo because it
has a genetic defect or genetic alterations which are removing traits or enhancing them. Modifying
human embryos and gene therapy should only be used for medical reasons because it will reduce
health problems like birth defects or fatal incurable diseases thus eliminating the suffering and pain of
both the children and their parents.

These therapies have existed for a few diseases since 2012 and research is continuing. As this research

Organic Farming Vs Organic Food
Organic farming is the production of food without the use of synthetic chemicals or genetically
modified components (Better Health, 2017). Consumers and health experts have long debated whether
organic foods are more nutritious and safer than conventional food (Harvard Health, 2012). There is
contradicting evidence surrounding the issue, and many choose to eat organic foods as they believe
they have higher nutritional outcomes and less chemical residues than conventional foods. Others
believe that conventional foods are no worse for health than their organic counterparts.
Background
Organic food producers and farmers grow and produce their food without synthetic chemicals like
pesticides and fertilisers and do not use genetically modified (GM) components. Naturally occurring
pesticides such as pyrethrins, light oils, copper and sulphur are permitted in organic farming (Better
Health, 2017). Organic produce available in Australia include fruit and vegetables, dried legumes,
grains, meat and meat products, dairy foods, eggs, honey and some processed foods (Better Health,
2017). The term organic is not currently regulated under Australian law, which means that companies
and businesses are not required to follow specific regulations or a Standard in order to claim organic
on their products (Australian Organic, 2017).
Discussion
There is sufficient evidence that organic foods have higher nutritional outcomes than conventional
foods. According to a 2014 study led by Prof.

In 1921, Vyse had sent to the RA a number of models for consideration by the exhibition committee.
To his chagrin, he received rejection slips for all of his entries. Further exacerbating the situation, the

observed, the entire group roughly 18 cms high. It features a young apple cheeked Malcolm Parr

large turkey striding out, as though at a run. The right leg crooked and the left leg extended with claws
outspread. To provide further stabilising points of contact with the plinth, the lowered wings are in
touch with the grassy knoll of the base. Parr s displays finely detailed modelling, from the puffed out

initially covered with white tin glaze, afterwards he applied the enamel colours over this glaze, such as
the two decorative bands of blue across the spread feathers of the tail. The barred wings and lower

Today seemed like fun, but when I walked out of the restroom it was the complete opposite. As I was
tidying up, I waited for my cousin Jessica. I couldn t help but stare outside of the enormous, clear
windows of the mall where there was a gigantic water fountain, sparkly and clear. Waiting and staring,
I realized that none of my other relatives were near me and my sister was gone. They probably wanted
only me to stay with Jessica, I pondered, feeling like the victim because thinking of Jessica made me
throw up inside. When I went into the restroom, I yelled, Jessica! Are you in there? No one replied.
Where could she be? I started to crawl on the cold as ice floor that made me feel like I was in a freezer
room, to look for my cousin s shoes and legs. Jessica, the annoying, wild, teenage rebel, was probably
just hiding from me. Every time I passed a stall, I would say to myself, She s probably in the other
stall, until there were no more stalls. I could barely breathe. Panicking and sweating, I walked out of
the restroom and tried to think of places where my family could ve gone to. When I exited the
restroom and turned the corner, the hallway looked more like an abandoned ghost town. Fortunately,
anyone who passed by me didn t bother to care that I was alone. Then when I realized something, my

Significance Of The Reconstruction Era
As a nation, America has gone through many things including war and political changes. People in the
United States went through much throughout history. The people that once lead this country had
different intentions and targets. One moment in history that was very important and very influential
today is the Reconstruction Era. The Reconstruction Era was a time period that contains many
accomplishments, failures, leaders, and aims. There were many events in this era which made people
call it a failure and a success. In the year of 1865, right after the Civil War, Reconstruction began. The
Reconstruction Era was known as the time of repair after the civil war. At that time, the leader of the
nation was Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln wanted the south to join the Union so he freed the African
Americans. When looking at the Reconstruction Era, there are many events that make up this era such
as the reconstruction amendments, the freedman s bureau, and the Ku Klux Klan. During the
Reconstruction Era, congress passed three amendments which were the 13th, 14th, and 15th
amendments. The 13th abolished slavery, the 14th granted the African American males citizenship,
and the 15th gave the African Americans the right to vote. According to the thirteenth Amendment

Napoleon s Letters From An Italian Nobleman s Family
Acquiring insight into the personalities and feelings of any historical figure is a tricky thing. Often we
are left with secondary, and sometimes very biased, accounts of how individuals conducted
themselves in various situations in their lives. But luckily, we are sometimes left with vivid sources
penned by figures themselves, and that is what we have with Napoleon s letters. Through them we can
hope to gain a better and more well rounded look into the life one of the most loved, and reviled, men
in recent history.
To begin, let us take a look at Napoleon s letters to his immediate family. Letter 71 is addressed to his
sister Pauline, who in 1803 had married into an Italian nobleman s family. In this letter, Napoleon
expresses his love for his sister, and wishes her nothing but happiness, showing a tender and brotherly
side not often associated with the conquering emperor. But this letter is also no simple social call, but
a request that his sister make herself known and appreciated as a socialite in the city of Rome, seat of
the Papal States. This is a shrewd and clever move on his part, displaying an understanding of the
delicacies of statesmanship and foreign opinion.
In letter 109, a brief note penned in 1806 to his sister Elisa, Napoleon urges her to only allow dresses
of silk and batiste to be worn at the court of her husband in Italy. He insists that preference may be
given to the products of French industry , and is fully confident that such fashion will become

Jim Boeeney Case Study
After Thanksgiving, life was pretty great for Jim Boeheim s basketball team and Orange fans across

comeback against the Hoyas, Cuse did not look good in almost any respect during either game. Going
forward, there are three clear problems and the team now led by assistant coach and head coach
designate, Mike Hopkins, due to Boeheim s nine game suspension must focus on to break back into
the top 25 and pose a threat in the ACC.
1. Rebounding

Close outs
While the first two issues are blatant, this is slightly less obvious, but right now Syracuse is doing a
poor job of closing out on opposing players on the three point line as other teams zip the ball around
the arc to find the holes in Syracuse s 2 3 zone. Like most of Boeheim s teams, this team is long and
athletic, but is currently trusting their skills a little too much. When approaching potential shooters,
Orange players are charging out, leading too easy drive bys or passes into the lane and the vulnerable
spots in the 2 3. And even when the other team isn t moving the ball that fast, Syracuse is jumping at

Those are the three most apparent problems with this year s Orange team. With a game against

mourned for his presence but knew The cause is so important it becomes me at least to be silent (123).
Although Mary was a well respected woman throughout Connecticut, it was her job to lead her family

Mr. Silliman raised the question What shall I do my love? My late expensive absence has cost me a

He begins to look for advice from his knowledgeable wife about their problem of debt. He then

Management is the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals
(Bateman Schnell, 2003, p. 14). The four functions of management are planning, organizing, leading,

the four functions of management. This paper will focus on these three factors and their impact on

Organizing these meetings has gone from dependence on resource availability to selecting from a
variety of meeting options such as teleconferencing, web share meetings, and conference calls.
Technology has also impacted the means of leading a team. Projects are no longer initiated and
supervised on site. Today, a manager has the ability to run a project remotely thanks to advances such
as instant messaging, remote call forwarding, and wireless internet access. A project team leader can
receive a call, go online for answers, and electronically forward documentation to the team from a
remote location, or the comfort of his home. Perhaps the most effective impact technology has is how
quickly results can be measured when monitoring the success of a project. Once a project is complete,
tools such as shared databases allow each team member to monitor results real time, and apply

The State Of The Electoral College
Tyranny naturally arises out of democracy. These words from the Greek philosopher Plato summarize
the most fundamental concern of the delegates to the Constitutional Convention when they considered
what the best way to conduct presidential elections would be. While, in concept, democracy sounds
like the fairest form of government, in practice, it is less than ideal. Fear of tyranny of the majority
prompted discussion over how the president should be elected. The Founders chose the Electoral
College which incorporates democracy, federalism, and republicanism for presidential selection,
because it provided for the best balance of power. The Electoral College was the product of no small
amount of debate during the Constitutional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While he agreed that the sense of the people should operate in the choice of the [president], he made
clear the importance of afford[ing] as little opportunity as possible to tumult and disorder. This would
require the will of the people to be tempered by an intermediate body of electors. Not only would this
be a compromise between the competing ideas in the Constitutional Convention, it would prevent any
one group from having undue discretion when it came to electing the most powerful person in
government. Of these competing ideas, two are prominently reflected in the Electoral College. The
first is democracy, an idea largely advanced by Alexis de Tocqueville in Democracy in America.
Democracy, loosely defined as the direct representation of people in government, seems the most
logical way to conduct an election. The second is federalism. Understanding how this could become
problematic, the founders decided to include states in the election process. According to Federalist 68,
this would allow the people of each State [to] choose a number of persons as electors...who shall

Antidepressants Cause Birth Defects
The main argument being made is that some antidepressants can cause birth defects, the article
provides us with a study to help prove this. The study looked at data on more than 38,000 women who
had given birth in 1997 2009 and compared what the mother s antidepressants are and the child s
number of birth defects (Neighmond, 2015). One concept or idea that ties into child development is
epigenetics, where the environment influences or alters gene expression (Berk, 2018), which makes
me wonder if in some cases the child being exposed to an environment of a depressed mother, it may
cause some genes to alter. This also ties into the concept of passive gene environment, where parents
who are genetically related to the child set up the environment ... Show more content on

An example could be, if the mother or father is showing signs of depression, they may neglect to take
proper care for the child. Maybe because they are depressed, they may not focus all their time into the
child, rather focusing on their depression. A woman who avoids taking antidepressants during her
pregnancy to try and ensure her baby is born without defects could still have a child with some sort of
birth defect, other things can cause birth defects, such as current or prior drug use illegal or prescribed,
or in other cases that child is just genetically predisposed to it. Birth defects can happen due to genes
malfunctioning or even when there are problems with a chromosome (Berk, 2018). So, it is impossible
to say that a pregnant mother can avoid birth defects by not taking antidepressants. This idea is further
reinforced by Jennita Reefhuis in her abstract video when she cautions us that antidepressants are not
the only thing that can cause birth defects, other possibilities such as pre existing conditions in the
mother who takes antidepressants or other unknown influences may have a large impact on birth
defects as well (Reefhuis,

Animal Learning Assessment
After reviewing the behavior lectures, researching animal learning test and using my own personal
experience I would rank these animals in order of intelligence likewise.
1. Cats
2. Pigs
3. Dogs
4. Cattle
5. Horses
Cats excel across multiple facets of intelligence testing. Having the highest brain weight to body ratio
(1%), 8 common vocalizations, and over 15 complex vocalizations in which they use to communicate.
Yes, I do realize that they may not have preformed as well when it came to the maze test, coming in at
510 errors before success. Nevertheless, when you combine the results of all these test I find that cats
come out on top. From a performance standpoint they provide he most reliability and stamina across
multiple facets of testing criteria. In a very close ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, they lack luster when it comes to brain weight to body ratio (0.05%). This is probably
because of our own human interference, we have raised these animals to be fast growing and heavy
muscled. I have personally worked with pigs and I find them to be incredibly fast learners but for this
discussion I must side with the data and rank them second. In third comes dogs, they provide the least
errors in the maze test (300) and adequate brain to body weight ratio (0.50%). Although when I
research vocalizations online I find that they lack the numbers of the pig and the cat. In my research I
also found that in studies pigs have actually shown a greater learning of tricks and specific tasks than
that of the canine. Surprisingly dogs actually share the lowest number of erros in the maze test with
cattle, but their ability to produce more complex vocalizations and their higher brain to body weight
ratio gives them the upper hand so I leave cattle 4th. Despite these shortcomings I still prefer cattle
over horses in my final decision. Cattle have an average brain to body weight ratio (0.10%) while also
showing strength in the maze test, 300 errors before success. There is very little

Definition Of Craniovertebral Junction
The craniovertebral junction(CVJ) is a collective term that is referring to the occiput, first cervical
vertebra (atlas), second cervical vertebra (axis) and the supporting ligaments. It is a transition zone
between a mobile cranium and relatively rigid spinal column. It encloses the soft tissue structures of
the cervico medullary junction which includes the medulla oblongata, spinal cord, and lower cranial
nerves. This region is the most mobile part of the cervical spine and functions as a funnel that provides
the twin features of stability and motionThe stability and flexibility to this region is provided by the
bony as well as and ligamentous nature of atlantooccipital and atlantoaxial joints. Craniovertebral

Modern Day Revelation Research Paper
Revelation is of the basis of our church and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Without
revelation, the gospel would have never been restored to this earth. Through revelation,
especially in this modern day, the prophet Joseph Smith was able to restore the fullness of the
gospel. Heavenly Father has made it possible for us all to receive revelation and has given us all
of the tools to do so in these days. Understanding how and why we receive revelation and the
importance of modern day revelation helps us to see how much God truly loves us.
In the Bible Dictionary, revelation is described as being translated from a Greek word
apocalypse, whose meaning is to make known or uncover (p. 716). We, as members of The
Church of Jesus Christ ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is the
purpose of the Holy Ghost as a spiritual companion to lead us to do good. Section 45 of the
Doctrine and Covenants is a revelation given through Joseph Smith during a time when false
stories and reports were being circulated about the community, preventing people from
investigating the gospel. In verse 57 of this section the Lord reveals to Joseph, For they that are
RECEIVING REVELATION4
wise and have received the truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide, and have not
been deceived verily I say unto you, they shall not be hewn down and cast into the fire, but
shall abide the day. It is only wise for us to listen to the Holy Spirit, for it will direct us all
towards the right way.
The Holy Ghost is the way in which we can receive revelation; however, personal
revelations may come in several different ways. For example, they may be conveyed in dreams,
visions or inspiration. President Boyd K. Packer stated, Inspiration comes more as a feeling
than as a sound (p. 20). We must be in tune with our feelings in order to sense the answers

Revolution Without Social Change
A Revolution Without Social Media In Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted,
Malcolm Gladwell argues that social change like the change that was brought about by the Civil
Rights Movement from the 1960 s cannot be achieved through social media. Gladwell reasoning about
social change not being achieved through social media is because the way on how there is not a
centralized leadership structure, the fact that everyone has an equal say and how activist was once
defined by their causes, now they are defined by their tools, has a meaning on why social change
cannot be achieved because of social media. Neither strong nor weak ties, would bring a social
change, the more ties there, increased the number of high risk activism, the only component of an
established centralized leadership can fluctuate to create a social change. Gladwell argues that real life
activism is the result of strong ties among the persons involved, enabling them to come together and
be high risk activism towards social change. But depending on critical friends the more friends there
was, the better to join the protest against the cause to spread sit ins through the South without the use
of social media. Gladwell states these events in the early sixties became a civil rights war that
engulfed the south ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He states The world, we are told , is in the midst of a revolution. The new tools of social media have
reinvented social activism. Where activist were once defined by their causes, they are now defined by
their tool. (Gladwell 170 171), Gladwell compares the new tool social media as a reinvented social
activism. Another way Gladwell see it, is that because of social media the industry of activist that were
recognized through their tools, which is social media playing a big role into a big social

Gjb2 Protein In Gap Junction
Abstract Summary
Gap junctions are large channels which join two adjacent cells connecting their cytoplasm s allowing
direct cell to cell communication and interactions by the channeling of molecules. A gap junction is
composed of two hemichannels known as connexions, one located on the membrane of each of the
adjacent interacting cells. The binding of six connexin subunits is required for the formation of each of
the connexion hemichannels which then join together via hydrophobic interactions forming a pore
through which molecules such as metabolites, calcium and potassium ions as well as secondary
messengers (IP3, cAMP) are able to passively diffuse across between interacting cells. This mode of
cell to cell communication via the passage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Studies have been done on the crystal structure of the channel in particular structure of its pore
suggests its importance in the regulation of its size dependant permeability by trans junctional voltage
for specific ions and molecules between the connected adjacent cells. (Qu, Y., Dahl, G. , 2002 ; Maeda
et al. , 2009).The permeability is regulated at the funnel of the channels pores which is composed of 6
amino terminal alpha helices lining the channels walls. The funnel is located on the cytoplasmic side
of either cell which are narrower than the inside of the channel itself allowing for the selective
permeability of different sized molecules and ions by trans junctional voltage (Qu, Y., Dahl, G.). In the
case of deafness, some mutations resulting in abnormal connexin26 subunits result in a change in this
voltage of the gated channels which in turn alter the selective permeability of the formed connexion
gap channel. (Mese et al. ,

Persuasive Essay For Year Round Education
Vote YES! To Year Round Education Though school might be a pain to some students, their health and
learning abilities can be effectively productive with year round education, or YRE. In contrast to the
U.S., Japan uses a 220 day year round school calendar, and Japanese students consistently test higher
than students in the United States ( Year Round School ). Putting students in YRE can help them in the
long run when it comes down to maintaining knowledge for the real world. YRE generally operates on
a 180 day schedule that includes a reduced summer vacation and frequent short breaks throughout the
school year (Chittom et al.). Failing tests and quizzes after coming back from breaks are the last thing
anyone wants to happen.
While attending schools that use balanced scheduling, the breaks that are implemented throughout the
school year may be shorter, but you get a broad variety of breaks for various occasions. YRE, or the
balanced calendar, helps to minimize the months worth of learning loss that students tend to
experience during a typical summer break (Chittom et al.). The focus of implementing a year round
school calendar is a convenient way to ignore larger problems concerning the educational system that
are not easily solved. Among year round education you retain more knowledge, get more breaks
throughout the year, and score higher and your assessments. The student health and learning abilities
are key to having success while getting classes done. With that being said, one of the most beneficial
points of year round education is student capability.
Though student benefits can be a broad range of subject, there are enough pros to cancel out the
equilibrium of the cons. Students socialization skills would be more likely to increase due to the
amount of days in the year. In YRE the students may be divided up into tracks. Single track students
and staff will go on vacations at the same time. Multi track is where a certain group/track of students
or staff take a vacation while others are at school. Matthew Lynch, from Education Week, stated The
main benefit with dividing schools in multi track and single track is for those who need extra or
remedial help. Students would be able to go back onto the

It was a part of Alternative Spring Break Program s Active Citizen Week, which is a week of events that encourage students to do more in the community. It s one of my favorite events of the season. • 5. A New Form Of Leadership Paul Ryan, current Speaker of the House, holds an antithetic leadership style to solve issues in the future of congress. However, it is not a new form of leadership we have seen in politics. Paul Ryan is a Republican and the Republicans do currently have power in the Senate and House of Representatives. Clearly though, the Republican Party is divided and struggles to solve current issues in congress. Currently this is due to collective action issues such as, the need for information, time, and coordination currently in Republican Party. What Paul Ryan has done to solve these issues so far is, unify republicans, and at the same time solve collective action issues and other problems thus far by giving congressional committees the power to achieve these issues. The history of Congressional power from 1890 to present day has varied from strong individuals, to strong committees. From 1890 to about 1910 the speaker would heavily influence the House of Representatives. Speakers had the power to appoint the committees to chairs, and had control of legislative agenda s. But in 1910, a revolt had happened against Speaker Joe Cannon. Power shifted to the committees whose leaders were based on seniority. From the 1920 s to the 1970 s party influence was very weak and this was known as the era of committee government. Beginning in the 1970 s preferences of the party and its members became more similar. They did not have to be as concerned with the leader s preferences, because it would ... Chemical Compounds That Transmit Neural Signals From One... 3.3.1 Neurotransmitter indicators Neurotransmitters are endogenous chemical compounds that transmit neural signals from one neuron to another. Binding of neurotransmitters may either inhibit or excite the postsynaptic neurons. Among the numerous neurotransmitters, glutamate is the major excitatory amino acid neurotransmitter in mammalian neural systems {Cotman 1986}. The first genetically encoded neurotransmitter for glutamate was reported in 2005 {Okumoto, 2005 #292}. Upon binding to glutamate, the indicator converts the ... Abraham Levitt, an American entrepreneur, established a community in Nassau County, Long Island. Levitt converted former farmland into a suburban community where thousands of individuals could find housing. Approximately, 17,000 houses were built and sold or rented to middle income families (Naish, 2014). Among the American population, there was a desire for individual freedom following World War II. One being able to attain a large living space and accumulate material wealth became engrained in the American Dream. Many realized that the suburbs and living in planned subdivisions of land was an affordable option. This led to the growth of suburbia throughout the late 20th century. These same desires are what allow the suburbs to flourish today. The US Census Bureau published in 2002 The Demographic Trends of the 20th Century. The Prohibition era, dated between mid 1920 to early 1933, was period in American history when the manufacture, transportation and sale of intoxicating liquors were banned and forbidden because of the increase in violence and illegal activities. During the Prohibition, there was a sudden rise in capitalism through illegal sale and production of liquor, which is known as bootlegging . The reason behind these diagnosed mental illnesses has a lot to do with the way the Irish are raised. Most of the Irish population is raised in a similar way, which does not allow them to make decisions for themselves. Many of the concepts and facts have been things I have had little to no prior knowledge of. But regardless of any of that, I cannot express the importance of this area of study in my life. Darkness And Darkness In John Milton s Relation To Darkness Perhaps, within one line, Milton describes the nature of all emitted light; that it must, if we are to call it light, be considered in relation to darkness and that darkness must be considered in relation to light; that a thing cannot be without its opposite, since any one member of an antithesis cannot exist without a counter member, or an anti member; as a white horse cannot be compared to a black one without the black one being present; A cannot be compared to B unless B is present; by extension, an antithesis works by expressing two extremities of any one quality, the antithesis of white is black, since, if we were to evaluate colour, white suggests the prescience of white and the absence of black, and vice versa. But, to what degree is blackness said to exist in whiteness? Are they two separate qualities? Is one merely the absence of the other? Is so, the true nature of the antithesis is of one existent thing to a non existent thing. Suppose we are to compare lightness to darkness: if light is said to exist, as an emission which illuminates darkness, then light can only be considered as something which illuminates darkness, and thus can only be considered in relation to darkness; likewise, if we are to call darkness that thing which covers light, it must be considered in relation to its opposite, which supposes that both exist; but, if we suppose that both exist, than darkness cannot be the absence of light but must rather be covering of it. • 22. African American Shortcomings In America Of course, those Korean immigrants were only fighting for their own economic survival in America, too. Yet the assertion was understandable: during the 1970s and 1980s, deindustrialization, which brought unemployment to the middle class, would only exacerbate the conditions of Los Angeles most impoverished. The few remaining jobs it left to the slums had been seized and hoarded by Korean immigrants. In the reality of the situation, however, African Americans, despite their efforts and an ongoing movement for civil rights, were simply incapable of achieving the same level of entrepreneurial success of Korean Americans during this time period. The reasons for their shortcomings in Koreatown, in addition to lacking higher education and professional job experience many Korean immigrants had at their disposal, were primarily due to the deeply ingrained institution of prejudice against African Americans. African Americans were helplessly vulnerable to racism regardless of how hard they worked, they would struggle to compete with other minority groups. Nevertheless, African Americans continued to criticize Korean Americans as they accumulated the capital and social mobility necessary to move out of Koreatown. The neighborhood had proved itself a valuable tool for Korean entrepreneurial ventures, but it still remained a poor urban slum. Besides thriving Korean businesses, historians Nancy Abelmann and John Lie discovered that Koreatown was home to the highest crime rate in all of Los Angeles, and a median household income which was half the California state average and even lower than that of South Central Los Angeles. Other than to keep families perpetually wary, the district s poor and dangerous conditions served to question Korean businesses for their seemingly nonexistent contributions on the surrounding community. While Korean merchants certainly could have helped raise Koreatown out of poverty, they instead escaped with their families to wealthy suburbs as soon as they had acquired enough capital. Persuasive Essay On The American Dream The phrase The American Dream is relatively old and has a long history, and although its ideas has changed tremendously throughout the centuries, it still holds great meaning behind it. It not only symbolizes financial success, but having the freedom to live independently. For some, living the American Dream means having justice, material possession, or just pursuing everlasting happiness. The new American Dream requires you to earn opportunity, and is has been more difficult for others based on their social standing, ethnicity, and race to obtain; as opposed to the past American Dream which involved optimism and hope for a better life. Each source clearly demonstrates the need for determination and willpower to overcome barriers and obstacles of life. In the early years of America, the concept of money and fame was not the American Dream. For the Puritan minister, John Winthrop, the American Dream was love and unity, creating a utopian society based on Christian ideals. Throughout A Model of Christian Charity, Winthrop quotes the Bible to prove that the particular lifestyle of loving and giving is the only way to obtain such an outstanding utopian society. In A Model of Christian Charity, Matthew 7:12: says, Whatsoever ye would that men should to you , creating equality within the world (Winthrop, 25). Winthrop believed that if people were to unite in love, they will be able to change the world in a more positive manner. Furthermore, he believed the Lord created individuals such as the rich, poor, the powerful, and the weak to help each other with each of their different strengths. In conclusion, it presented exactly how the Puritans should treat one another as it would benefit the colonies overall survival. Not only did Winthrop want his colony to survive, but wanted to set a good example to everyone else. This was his vision of the perfect American Dream. Benjamin Franklin demonstrates the possibilities of life in the New World through his own rise from lower middle class as a youth to one of the most admired men in the world. • 26. The Impact Of Political Machine On The City Summer Eldred Evans April 16, 2016 U.S. Urban History Essay: Urban America Discuss the political machine and its operations in the city, 1865 1939 The political machine is very powerful in the city and because of how powerful it is that urban United States was able to develop so much and increase in power in the late 1800 s and early 1900 s. A political machine is system of political organization based on patronage, the spoils system, and political ties. Sometimes political machines have a boss and sometimes they may not have a boss, and always have a corps of workers who depend on the patronage given by government contracts and jobs. Machine politics has existed in many United States cities for a long time now, but are still in effect in some areas. The rapid growth of American cities in the late 1800 s and early 1900 s created huge problems for the government that ran the cities as in most cases in was very poorly structured and could not really give the people what they needed. It is because of the inability of city government to provide these things to the people that there was a rise in political machines. These political machines gained support from the population by providing houses for people who needed them and by also offering people jobs that they desperately needed. This gave the political machines a lot of power and support from there loyal followers. Voters are often rewarded with patronage jobs. However, patronage can result in poorer service to the ... • 27. Oryx And Crake Argumentative Essay Genetic engineering or genetic enhancement refers to the transfer of genetic material intended to modify nonpathological human traits (Hanna 1). These enhancements are used to modify human embryos and during gene therapy. There are currently two different approaches to gene manipulation, embryo elimination or genetic alteration. There is a choice of either disposing of an embryo because it has a genetic defect or genetic alterations which are removing traits or enhancing them. Modifying human embryos and gene therapy should only be used for medical reasons because it will reduce health problems like birth defects or fatal incurable diseases thus eliminating the suffering and pain of both the children and their parents. Gene modification techniques using genetically modified DNA can modify a faulty gene and thus eliminate a disease like cystic fibrosis which is caused by one faulty gene. This falls within the criteria of health related gene therapy. However, if it becomes possible for athletes to use gene therapy to increase production of oxygen carrying red blood cells the resulting change is not medically necessary but begins to modify someone to improve athletic performance or build a super race. • 28. Organic Farming Vs Organic Food Organic farming is the production of food without the use of synthetic chemicals or genetically modified components (Better Health, 2017). Consumers and health experts have long debated whether organic foods are more nutritious and safer than conventional food (Harvard Health, 2012). There is contradicting evidence surrounding the issue, and many choose to eat organic foods as they believe they have higher nutritional outcomes and less chemical residues than conventional foods. Others believe that conventional foods are no worse for health than their organic counterparts. Background Organic food producers and farmers grow and produce their food without synthetic chemicals like pesticides and fertilisers and do not use genetically modified (GM) components. Naturally occurring pesticides such as pyrethrins, light oils, copper and sulphur are permitted in organic farming (Better Health, 2017). Organic produce available in Australia include fruit and vegetables, dried legumes, grains, meat and meat products, dairy foods, eggs, honey and some processed foods (Better Health, 2017). The term organic is not currently regulated under Australian law, which means that companies and businesses are not required to follow specific regulations or a Standard in order to claim organic on their products (Australian Organic, 2017). Discussion There is sufficient evidence that organic foods have higher nutritional outcomes than conventional foods. According to a 2014 study led by Prof. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. Descriptive Essay About Alone Alone Today seemed like fun, but when I walked out of the restroom it was the complete opposite. As I was tidying up, I waited for my cousin Jessica. I couldn t help but stare outside of the enormous, clear windows of the mall where there was a gigantic water fountain, sparkly and clear. Waiting and staring, I realized that none of my other relatives were near me and my sister was gone. They probably wanted only me to stay with Jessica, I pondered, feeling like the victim because thinking of Jessica made me throw up inside. When I went into the restroom, I yelled, Jessica! Are you in there? No one replied. Where could she be? I started to crawl on the cold as ice floor that made me feel like I was in a freezer room, to look for my cousin s shoes and legs. Jessica, the annoying, wild, teenage rebel, was probably just hiding from me. Every time I passed a stall, I would say to myself, She s probably in the other stall, until there were no more stalls. I could barely breathe. Panicking and sweating, I walked out of the restroom and tried to think of places where my family could ve gone to. When I exited the restroom and turned the corner, the hallway looked more like an abandoned ghost town. Fortunately, anyone who passed by me didn t bother to care that I was alone. Often we are left with secondary, and sometimes very biased, accounts of how individuals conducted themselves in various situations in their lives. But luckily, we are sometimes left with vivid sources penned by figures themselves, and that is what we have with Napoleon s letters. Through them we can hope to gain a better and more well rounded look into the life one of the most loved, and reviled, men in recent history. To begin, let us take a look at Napoleon s letters to his immediate family. Letter 71 is addressed to his sister Pauline, who in 1803 had married into an Italian nobleman s family. In this letter, Napoleon expresses his love for his sister, and wishes her nothing but happiness, showing a tender and brotherly side not often associated with the conquering emperor. But this letter is also no simple social call, but a request that his sister make herself known and appreciated as a socialite in the city of Rome, seat of the Papal States. This is a shrewd and clever move on his part, displaying an understanding of the delicacies of statesmanship and foreign opinion. In letter 109, a brief note penned in 1806 to his sister Elisa, Napoleon urges her to only allow dresses of silk and batiste to be worn at the court of her husband in Italy. These words from the Greek philosopher Plato summarize the most fundamental concern of the delegates to the Constitutional Convention when they considered what the best way to conduct presidential elections would be. While, in concept, democracy sounds like the fairest form of government, in practice, it is less than ideal. Fear of tyranny of the majority prompted discussion over how the president should be elected. Not only would this be a compromise between the competing ideas in the Constitutional Convention, it would prevent any one group from having undue discretion when it came to electing the most powerful person in government. Of these competing ideas, two are prominently reflected in the Electoral College. The first is democracy, an idea largely advanced by Alexis de Tocqueville in Democracy in America. Democracy, loosely defined as the direct representation of people in government, seems the most logical way to conduct an election. The second is federalism. Understanding how this could become problematic, the founders decided to include states in the election process. According to Federalist 68, this would allow the people of each State [to] choose a number of persons as electors...who shall assemble...and vote for some fit person as President. The study looked at data on more than 38,000 women who had given birth in 1997 2009 and compared what the mother s antidepressants are and the child s number of birth defects (Neighmond, 2015). One concept or idea that ties into child development is epigenetics, where the environment influences or alters gene expression (Berk, 2018), which makes me wonder if in some cases the child being exposed to an environment of a depressed mother, it may cause some genes to alter. This also ties into the concept of passive gene environment, where parents who are genetically related to the child set up the environment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Maybe because they are depressed, they may not focus all their time into the child, rather focusing on their depression. Birth defects can happen due to genes malfunctioning or even when there are problems with a chromosome (Berk, 2018). So, it is impossible to say that a pregnant mother can avoid birth defects by not taking antidepressants. This idea is further reinforced by Jennita Reefhuis in her abstract video when she cautions us that antidepressants are not the only thing that can cause birth defects, other possibilities such as pre existing conditions in the mother who takes antidepressants or other unknown influences may have a large impact on birth defects as well (Reefhuis, ... The binding of six connexin subunits is required for the formation of each of the connexion hemichannels which then join together via hydrophobic interactions forming a pore through which molecules such as metabolites, calcium and potassium ions as well as secondary messengers (IP3, cAMP) are able to passively diffuse across between interacting cells.
