The Creature in the Lagoon
If only Jacqueline and I had listened to our parents and not ventured into the lagoon, Elaine thought.
Elaine and Jacqueline were growing up in a condominium facing Lake Ontario in downtown Toronto
on Queen s Quay Boulevard. Their parents, Dennis and Roberta, were both lawyers. Elaine was
fourteen and Jacqueline was sixteen. The lagoon in question was located at Hanlon s Point, next to the
Toronto Islands.
Dennis and Roberta had always warned Elaine and Jacqueline to stay away from the lagoon.
The lagoon is not safe, Dennis cautioned. It is private property, owned by the Harbour Commission.
Why? asked Elaine.
Because the lagoon contains an amphibious creature, Roberta answered. It is built like a man, but it
looks like a fish. It stands upright with what looks like legs, but it is scaly and has sharp teeth like a
shark and claws instead of hands.
The parents warnings seemed silly to Elaine and Jacqueline. Both girls thought it would be fun to
explore the lagoon.
One day, Elaine and Jacqueline were watching on television an old movie called The Lagoon
Creature. The so called creature, the mysterious man fish, was half amphibious, half human, and
resembled the creature their mother had told them about. Elaine was squirming with fear, although
Jacqueline was laughing.
Do you actually believe in these creatures? Elaine asked Jacqueline.
No, I don t, Jacqueline answered. The story on TV is made up, just like our parents keep telling us
there is a man built like a fish in the lagoon. Our friends from school walk around the lagoon all the
time. I have never heard stories from them about an amphibious creature. They would laugh at this
story.
The next day, it just so happened that Dennis and Roberta were relaxing around the condominium s
swimming pool. Elaine and Jacqueline decided to go down to Eaton s Centre, but as they left their
condominium building to get the Harbourfront bus to Union Station, they decided to take the bus in
the opposite direction to the lagoon, which was located near the Toronto Islands.
No sooner had the girls reached the lagoon than they saw something enormous splashing in it.

To determine the metabolic rate of a goldfish two different methods can be applied, direct or indirect
calorimetry. Direct calorimetry analyzes the exothermic reaction when ATP is produced by measuring
the amount of heat that is released. Meanwhile, indirect calorimetry measures the amount of carbon
dioxide or oxygen because both are components of aerobic respiration, a process which repeatedly
supplies more ATP to match the demands of metabolic rate of an organism. Evidently, metabolic rate
is the cumulative sum of energy used by all the cells. Most of this energy comes from regulating
homeostasis, locomotion and thermoregulation. On the other hand, ectotherms like goldfish have a
slight difference in their metabolic rates because their internal temperature directly correlates with the
temperature of their environment. For this reason, ectotherms use less energy because they do not
need to worry about thermoregulation, maintaining constant body temperature. However, temperature,
size, amount of light and stimulus are factors that can affect metabolism of goldfish. Thus, this
experiment will measure the metabolic rate of goldfish through in direct calorimetry. Furthermore, the
amount of oxygen in the chamber reveals the amount of cellular respiration of the organism. While
also, test the effects of decreasing oxygen, and later increasing the heat on the metabolic rate of

Upon investigating the bones Schmerling did not recognize them as a distinct species (Sawyer et al.
2007).The first true Neanderthal was discovered in the Neander Valley, near Dusseldorf in 1856 by a
group of miners who were blasting out a cave in the area. When the crew uncovered archaic bones
they contacted a local schoolteacher, Johann Karl Fuhlrott. Fuhlrott was the first to recognize the
