Ear Lab Report
Kristen Rodriguez
Speech 1
October 4, 2015 Outline
Introduction: *demonstrate a sound*
Describe the structure of the ear. The Pinna is a ridged cartilage flap covered by skin. The Meatus is
made up of skin and bone. The Tympanic Membrane, is a concave shaped layer of membrane with the
visual of a flattened cone (AAC). The hammer doesn t really live up to its name, it looks more like a
golf club. The Anvil resembles a snag tooth while the stirrup mirrors its name. The Cochlea is a
membrane covered spiral shaped tube. The Auditory nerve is made up of several tubes ending in
terminals.
How sound makes its way through the parts of the ear. Sound travels through the outer ear hitting the
Pinna, traveling through the Outer Ear Canal. Vibration ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Outer Ear: The Pinna gathers sound and sends it down the ear canal. The twists and folds of the pinna
enhance high frequency (pitched) sounds and also help us to determine the direction of the sound
source (AAC). Ear wax is developed by two thirds of the ear s external canal, the remaining is bone.
The Meatus or ear canal is a 2 3 cm of cartilage that strengthens the sound coming in. Middle Ear: The
Tympanic Membrane is hit by sound waves causing the eardrum to vibrate as such then transferring
that energy into mechanical energy. Out of the eardrum and onto three bones, Malleus which is
connected to the drum passing sounds on to the Incus that sits on top of the hammer and collects
vibrations. Ending with the Stapes which is responsible for compression of the waves so they can
travel through the inner ear. The Cochlea is home to many nerve cells that are capable of damaging
and are impossible to grow back. The Cochlea s frequency selectivity refers to the ability of the
auditory system to identify tonal components in complex sound. It largely depends on the filtering
ability of the cochlea and its tuning properties are determine by the amplification mechanisms of the
cochlear outer hair cells (BioMedical Engineering). The Auditory Nerve sends all electrical impulses
to the brain, starting the process of

Comparison Of Aldous Huxley s Nineteen Eighty-Four
George Orwell also took influence from authors who were active in his own lifetime, such as English
author Aldous Huxley. Orwell s novel Nineteen Eighty Four most commonly gets compared to Aldous
Huxley s novel Brave New World, which was originally published in 1932, seventeen years before
Orwell published his own anti totalitarian work. Comparable to Nineteen Eighty Four, Brave New
World is a dystopian novel in which a political agenda is discussed via a fabricated government.
However, while similarities can be drawn, the two differ in their content. In Brave New World, Huxley
s fictional society is controlled by drugs and efforts to distract its citizens who are immersed in a
world of technology that could only have been dreamed of at the ... Show more content on

In the same fashion that he took influence from the writings of other authors before him, authors in the
generations after him have done the same. Margaret Atwood, whose novel The Handmaid s Tale
(1985) has sparked political interest in its recent resurgence much as Orwell s works have, was
inspired by Orwell s ideologies, mainly those represented in Animal Farm. As previously mentioned,
Orwell is no novice at creating dystopian societies, a skill that Atwood, too, shows in The Handmaid s
Tale, the plot of which centers around the handmaids (women) being used strictly for reproductive
purposes. The more substantial influence, however, is the use of satire in literature. In Animal Farm,
Orwell created a politically satirical society of animals meant to represent the regime under Joseph
Stalin, whom he opposed. In The Handmaid s Tale, however, Atwood used satire for social justices
rather than a political agenda, though the two often coincide. Atwood takes a dystopian view of a
world in which women are used as objects to keep the population alive and uses it to make readers
understand why feminism is needed; if women are not allowed to choose what they are able to do with
their bodies, be it abortion or birth control, they will soon only be seen as a means of

Swimsuit Monologue
Stout bathers in baggy swimsuits tiptoe into the sea then launch themselves into the waves. A ship
hovers on the horizon, hardly seeming to move, spectral against the whitewashed sky. Everything
looks too real, too sharply defined and the colours are too bright, as if I m seeing them after waking
from a fever. The man who d found my clothes is standing with his back to me, watching the
swimmers. Hello, I say, and the he turns to face me. I recognise him; he d been selling tickets for a
boat trip out to the bay. Mikes effort to engage with him, his friendly all right, mate, had met with a
curt nod. Thanks for rescuing my clothes, I say, and tug at my wrinkled skirt, trying to cover my

Imagery In The Raven And My Mistress Eyes By William...
In The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe and My mistress eyes by William Shakespeare they both use strong
imagery. Imagery in both of these poems helps set the tone, theme, and helps convey their messages in
their poems. Shakespeare uses imagery as a way to compare his mistress to typical beauty standards
during the 1800s. My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun usually during this time when dedicating a
poem or writing a poem to a significant other they use strong hyperboles. Coral is far redder than her

Family Structure In Post-War Britian Essay
World War ǁ was a global military event, the most colossal conflict in history lasting from 1939 1945,
it involved most of the worlds nations including Great Britain. WWII had far reaching implications for
most of the world. The following essay will demonstrate the changes the UK family has undergone
since World War ǁ, the following essay will also throw light upon the changes in family types,
economic activities of women , power distribution, laws and sexuality with respect to disciplines of
sociology, economics, history and politics. Family used to be a single unit, consisting of a husband,
wife and children. This unit was widely thought as a group based on marriage and biological
parenthood as sharing a common residence and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
. More importance was given to the wife rather than the husband, as a companion and producer of
children The family shows both continuity and changes which can be seen by looking at nuclear
families and single parent families respectively. Before 1940s, marriage was considered an important
part of society and thought to be a social institution essential for order. Divorce and single parent
families were considered dreadful, sex outside marriage was not acceptable, it was a moral offense.
The tempo of divorces was very low, but this social behavior soon ended in the post war era. By
1960s, this was no longer the case, as women started to work. They became much more independent,
laws were changed and increase in divorces and cohabitation rates had shown that marriage was not
compulsory in one s life. Family structure has been changed and there is about one and a quarter
million single parents. A family making up to 19% of all families with children, the number of single
parents has almost doubled since the early 1970s. According to census 2001 report and labor force
survey, the rate of married couple (marriages) has decreased over the last ten years, (accounting for 71
per cent of families in 2006, compared with 76 per cent in 1996). In the same period, the proportion of
cohabiting couple increased to 14 per cent from 9 per cent. The proportion of lone parent families
increased by less than one per cent over this period, but the

Why Did World War 1 Happen
World War one was one of the deadliest conflicts that most of the world was involved in. There were
many reasons why Europe went from peace to war so fast. There were many alliances around the
world to balance the power of Europe. Some examples were the triple alliance and the Triple Entente.
These alliances consisted of Germany, Austro Hungary, and Italy for the Triple alliance. The Triple
Entente consisted of Great Britain, France, and Russia. There are many other reasons why World War
1 happened, many factors that are going to be in this paper that I m writing. The main one that I
believe was the immediate cause of World War 1 was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
There were many nationalist ideas running around the world. Many new countries were forming in
declining and fragmenting empires. Europe was a bomb waiting to be detonated, the only problem is,
who s going to do it. Nationalism was especially high in Serbia. They wanted a bigger nation and
wanted to form their own empire. Many countries had minority Groups in their country and the
cultures were very different than what nations had. Serbia was going to take Bosnia, but Austria
annexed them outright. That spark was later lit when the Black Hand, a terrorist Group in Serbia,
wanted independence from their mother country, Austria Hungary. ... Show more content on

The Main Colonizers were Great Britain, France, Portugal, and the Netherlands. Germany wanted to
have Colonies too so they colonized Africa and parts of Indonesia. Imperialism was at its finest after
the Franco Prussian War. Great Britain and France feared that Germany would want more Colonies as
they didn t have much at all. Great Britain relied heavily on their colonies for their trade and economy
along with France. Germany wanted to expand its empire as it was a fairly new nation to begin with.
They were some competition between Great Britain and Germany, for trade and for

Difference Between Misdemeanors And Felonies
People understand the difference between right and wrong and that there are going to be consequences
for their actions. People also understand that a crime is doing something that is wrong or illegal that
there are punishments that fit the crime. However, there are also times when the punishment does not
fit the crime or is excessive. People that commit these crimes do so in hoping that they won t get
caught but when they do they know that they are going to have a punishment that fits the crime. This
paper is going to look at the difference between misdemeanors and felonies and the punishment that
go with the crimes, and the sentencing guidelines in which the courts are supposed to follow, and
process in which a criminal can request a sentence reduction, or appeal their current sentence.
People do things every day that they know are wrong, with little or no thought to the consequences.
There are consequences for things that we do wrong, whether it s a crime or not. Whether or not
people want to admit, they want to feel as if justice has been served, and often times in order for them
to feel this way they want the person to serve a lot of time in prison. We understand that justice needs
to be served, and that the person who committed the crime needs to face the consequences associated
with the crime, but what happens when their punishment is too excessive, or does not fit the crime in
which they committed. People go to jail and prisons every day, and some judges

Active Voice Vs. Passive Voice
Why is it important to write in an Active Voice vs. Passive Voice ?
I believe active voice is important because it allows us to write a lower grade level that our intended
audiences can understand and relate to. Active voice creates clear action it is less wordy, which is
direct to the reader or to the audience. Also, the writer uses a common and present language to connect
with the readers so they can better understand the written material. On the other hand, passive voice is
indirect and has weak verbs and may use present progressives which can be very confusing to the
reader. Passive voice is used when the writer does not know the audience. However, in the health care
field, it is important that you know your audiences not by personally,

The Heterogeneity Of India
All the convergent influences of the world run through this society:
Hindu,Moslem,Christian, secular;Stanlist, liberal,Maoist, democratic socialist, Gandhian. There is not a
thought that is being thought in the West or East that is not active in some Indian mind. E.P.Thompson
The singular thing about India is that you can only speak of it in the plural says Shashi Tharoor. Also,
Amartya Sen in his Magnum Opus The Argumentative Indians talks about the pluralist and tolerant
culture of India. The heterogeneity of India is ,beyond dispute, a source of immense pride for Indians.
Although is there a single definition which encapsulates what is meant by Indians; is can still, and
quite rightly, be disputed. This makes us unique among nations. India is a diverse not only in historical

Mad Love Character Analysis
The Batman Adventures Mad Love Deluxe Edition by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, is a graphic action
comic of the Joker trying to accomplish his ultimate goal of taking down Batman. Alongside the Joker
is Harley Quinn, who has falling for the Joker and is sick and tired of Batman getting in the way of her
and her Puddin (the Joker), and decides to take matters into her own hands. Scenes throughout the
graphic novel display the abusive relationship between the Joker and Harley and how she accepts to
be abused and mistreated because she loves him. Though the graphic novel is comical, it presents the
audience with images of male dominance and female submission, with the Joker and Harley.
In the first scene of the comic, the Joker and Harley are planning to kill the Police Commissioner, but
then Batman come in to save him. When Batman arrives Harley sprays him with some type of gas and
she becomes the dominant one in the scene, until the Joker gets angry and yells at her and starts
pulling her out of the room by her joker hat. Devor s statement of Such an alternative conception of
gender roles captures the hierarchical and competitive masculine thirst for power, which can, but need
not, lead to aggression... (390 91) is displayed in this scene. The Joker says I GIVE THE
PUNCHLINES AROUND HERE...GOT IT? to Harley after spraying Batman with the gas and saying
That s a real GASSER, huh, Mr.J? The Joker s thirst for power, especially with Batman, leads to
aggression because giving

Explain what happens to price and quantity of coffee when the following events occur:
1. An advertising campaign highlights scientific studies that find drinking coffee can help reduce
weight gain. a. What do you think would happen?
People will buy more coffee, drink more coffee, and research what coffee will help them lose more
weight. Case in point, does espresso assist in more weight loss then normal coffee? Espresso contains
more caffeine, so the thought process might be, that you can lose more weight by drinking espresso
than you would drinking your everyday run ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So, if that is the general consensus among the British then tea is about to be stock piled in tea drinking
countries because there is going to be a huge sale. I know there will not be enough tea drinkers in
these countries to keep the cost of tea at its current price. There are obese people all over the world
who want to lose weight and even skinny people want to stay skinny. As we have seen, when either
the demand or the supply curve shifts, the results are unambiguous; that is, we know what will happen
to both equilibrium price and equilibrium quantity, so long as we know whether demand or supply
increased or decrease. However, in practice, several events may occur at around the same time that
cause both the demand and supply curves to shift in the same direction or opposite directions (CITE).

Sundiata Book Report
Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali was originally orally told by Djeli Mamoudou Kouyate, who then gave
the story to Djibril Tamsir Niane. Djibril was originally born in Guinea and was a descendent of

causes him to run away. Sundiata pursues the sorcerer and eventually kills him in a cave. After this
victory, Sundiata returns to Niane and founds the Mali Empire. Sundiata splits the empire into

Compare And Similarities Between Sherlock And Doctor Who
From England to the United States, BBC America has aired their highly regarded television shows in
our vast continent since 1935. BBC, standing for the British Broadcast Channel, has produced an
abundant amount of nominated television shows from Merlin to Downtown Abbey. However, BBC is
well known for capturing the hearts of teenage and middle age individuals from their nominated
television shows called Sherlock and Doctor Who. Airing on BBC America since the 1960s, Doctor
Who is the longest running television show on BBC America. On the other hand, from Arthur Conan
Doyle s The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes , comes a contemporary twist in the story and characters
of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson. By looking at the outer portions of the shows, one can
view them as polar opposites. However, both the British television shows share exceedingly similar
qualities in their plot and characteristics of the main leads and their companions in the show. Sharing
similar characteristics in the roles that they play, Sherlock Homes form Sherlock and The Doctor from
Doctor Who are both intelligent lonely men who fancy a sense of adventure. The Doctor and Sherlock

Music in Othello

the harmony is turned into discord. [Scene Summary]

Othello s occupation s gone! (3.3.345 357)
The music of war, including the thunder of the cannon, makes Othello feel alive, fully himself, but
without Desdemona s love he feels that he s nothing. [Scene Summary]
Shortly after Othello has berated Desdemona about the handkerchief, Cassio appears to once again ask
Desdemona to intervene on his behalf. She tells him that My advocation is not now in tune; / My lord
is not my lord; nor should I know him, / Were he in favour [appearance] as in humour [attitude] alter d
(3.4.123 125). In other words, now is not a good time to talk to Othello; he s not himself, and if his
appearance had changed as much as his attitude, she wouldn t recognize him. The phrase in tune is so
common (in Shakespeare s time as well as ours) that it may be a stretch to call it a musical image.
[Scene Summary]
At a moment when Iago is trying to build Othello s jealousy into a murderous rage, Othello begins to
think of what a beautiful, sweet woman Desdemona is. Iago tells him that he needs to put such
thoughts out of his mind, and Othello says, Hang her! I do but say what she is. So delicate with her
needle. An admirable musician! O, she will sing the savageness out of a bear (4.1.187 189). However,
it s not Desdemona s music, but Iago s words that win the battle for Othello s soul. Othello s mood
becomes ever more savage, and he plans the time, place, and manner of

Advertising And Advertising
Media has become a part of our everyday lives. From the first moment we wake up to the last moment
we go to sleep we are always exposed to media. Media usage and consumption has drastically
changed from a way to receive information to a bombardment of products and companies. Television,
radio, movies, and magazines are all examples of different mediums used for media transmittance.
The average person is exposed to more than 4000 advertisements each day (Colette, 2015). Media has
four key purposes that include the expression of an opinion, educating the audience, persuading
viewers to purchase the merchandise and to entertain in order to maintain the consumers interest.
Before this course, I never realized that companies use different strategies in order to attract viewers.

Ludwig Van Beethoven ( 1770-1827 )

How Does Steinbeck Use Nature In Of Mice And Men
Over the course of the novel, John Steinbeck beautifully describes nature through symbolism to help
the reader understand the striking, strong story line. For example, at the beginning of the story, he
gives us a description of the setting. Rabbits come out of the brush to sit on the sand in the evening,
and the damp flats are covered with the night tracks of coons , and with the spread pads of dogs from
the ranches, and with the split wedge tracks of the deer come to drink in dark. (1) When reading this
novel Steinbeck describes animals to show the characters actions. When describing the use of rabbits
hiding In the brush, the reader might seem bewildered why someone needs to be so descriptive about
nature in this book. It seems irrelevant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Post Modernism Research Paper
This paper answers the question: Are We in a Post Modern Age?
Post Modernism can be described as a particular style of thought. It is a concept that correlates the
emergence of new features and types of social life and economic order in a culture; often called
modernization, post industrial, consumer, media, or multinational capitalistic societies.
In Modernity, we have the sense or idea that the present is discontinuous with the past, that through a
process of social, technological, and cultural change (either through improvement, that is, progress, or
through decline) life in the present is fundamentally different from life in the past. This sense or idea
as a world view contrasts with what is commonly known as Tradition, which ... Show more content on

There are several societal factors that have indicated and resulted in the rise of Modernity. The origin
of Modernity may have its roots in several periods: the year 1436, with Gutenberg s adoption of
moveable type; or in 1520, and Luther s rebellion against Church authority; or 1648, and the end of
the Thirty Years War; while even still, it could have begun during the American or French Revolutions
of 1776 or 1789; or even the rise of Modernism in fine arts and literature.
How we ourselves are to feel about the prospects of Modernity depends on what we see as the heart
and core of the modern, and what key events in our eyes gave rise to the modern world.
Societal Responses to Modernity:
During the period of the 1500 s thru the 1900 s the framework and presuppositions about Nature and
Humanity were being progressively challenged and overturned by many scientific advances, until not
one, or very little of their elements were accepted by reasonably educated people. European society
was becoming known as traditional, hierarchical, corporate, and privileged. These features had

his writings Faulkner produced images that can be compared to Gothic castles such as the Sartoris
plantation house in Sartoris and Sanctuary; the ruins of the Old Frenchman s place in Sanctuary and
The Hamlet; the Compson house, in a state of dilapidation, in Absalom, Absalom! and The Sound and

The world s largest earthquake occurred on May 22, 1960 near Valdivia, in southern Chile. It was a

Before the Great Chilean earthquake, three earthquakes stuck Chile which were a fore shock to the
main event and are known as the 1960 Concepción earthquakes ; the first earthquake struck on 21st
May 1960 it had a magnitude of 8.1 and lasted for about 35 seconds which destroyed a third of the

In fact, the Nazca plate continues to dive down below the continent and it s this constant slow
movement (with some occasional rapid shifts leading to big jolts) that creates earthquakes throughout

The Principle Of Respect For Patient Autonomy Essay
Over the past several decades, the principle of respect for patient autonomy has assumed a central
place in health care. Indeed, respect for the self determining decisions or interests of patients now is an
underlying consideration for most professional codes of practice and also patient codes of rights
(Cruess Cruess, 2008; MacLeod, Wilson Malpas, 2012). The dilemma now is that fear of losing
autonomy or dignity during the dying process could lead some patients to request a hastened death. In
a study investigating physician attitudes and behaviors when utilizing end of life decisions that
hastened death, researchers found physicians who would submit to a patient s request for an assisted
death stated that respect for the patient s autonomy was important in their decision making (Fried,
Stein, O Sullivan, Brock, Novack, 1993). Physicians who would not comply with a patient s request
for an assisted death agreed that respect for autonomy was significant but instead citing other factors
such as ethical and legal concerns (Fried et al., 1993).

Take a clean paper towel or coffee filter. Moisten it. Place 10 or 20 seeds onto it (10 is better). Fold the
seeds. If you use exactly ten seeds, you will find it much better to calculate the percentage of
germination after that. Here is why. If 5 out of 10 seeds germinate, then 50% of your seeds will grow
during the season. That s pretty risky. So you need more than 70% or else planting will not be worth
the effort. Ideally, 8 or 9 out of 10 seeds will sprout. However, if you get less than 70%, you had better
not put work into it at all. Buy new seeds for the upcoming planting season. Now, let s get back to the
topic. We reached a point where you fold the seeds. Then place them in a sandwich/zipper bag and zip
most of the way. Ideally, you will leave some room for the seeds to be able to breath. If you want to
test out several different seeds, write down the name of the plant on each bag to avoid errors when
identifying the seeds. Store the bag with seeds at room temperature (about 70 degrees Fahrenheit/21
degrees Celsius). Perhaps it is best to place it by a sunny window. Wait seven to ten days. During this

The Statue Of Liberty At Ellis Island
America is a melting pot of culture. The statue of liberty at Ellis Island has welcomed hundreds of
thousands of immigrants into this country since the early 1900s. Although the immigrant families
knew it was important to learn the American language and American culture, they also wanted to keep
alive their rich heritage and pass it onto their children. This was often a struggle as their children
attended American schools and picked up on the American culture ways quicker than their elder
parents. Often these children, especially the teenagers, would struggle with embarrassment over the
ways their family was different from other American families. One author who wrote about this
struggle was Amy Tan.

This was what inspired her to write stories about the relationships between Chinese women and their
Chinese American daughters. In the narrative Fish Cheeks , Amy Tan shares a story of young love
which reveals the conflict of shame and pride that she felt about her Chinese heritage.
The narrative begins by telling how a young Chinese girl has a crush on the minister s son, Robert
who is American. When the daughter finds out her parents have invited the minister and his family
over to eat, she starts to panic. All she could think was, What would Robert think of our shabby
Chinese Christmas? What would he think of our noisy Chinese relatives who lacked proper American
manners? What terrible disappointment would he feel upon seeing not a roasted turkey and sweet
potatoes but Chinese food? Here is where Amy Tan first hints at the shame she has about her culture.
She was already embarrassed before the dinner even happened. Tan continues to provide a vivid image
of the special meal her mother has prepared. For example she describes the fish as a slimy rock cod
with bulging eyes , and she makes the fish seem almost human as it pleads not to be dropped into the
hot oil. Tan uses a simile to describe the tofu. Tofu, which looked like stacked wedges of rubbery
white sponges. Tan compares the markings on the squid to a bicycle tire, so that one can imagine the
deep cuts made by the knife. She includes this description

4 Styles Of Humor Style
Humor is often considered as a powerful weapon, although it should be used with caution. There is
appropriate humor which dissipates tension; and inappropriate humor which provokes tension (Meeus
and Mahieu, 2009). A humor style is defined as the type of humor an individual typically practices
when interacting with others (Preeus and Sweeny, 2013). Martin et al. (2003) proposed a model of
humor styles comprising of four different styles of humor which are independent of each other. These
humor styles are based on whether humor is: used to enhance either the self or others, and adaptive
versus maladaptive for the self or others THE TWO ADAPTIVE STYLES OF HUMOR ARE: 1.

The maladaptive humor which is directed towards one s self in order to gain the approval of others is
referred to as self defeating humor. It involves attempts to amuse others at one s own expense by using
humor in a self disparaging way i. e. excessively critical and ridiculing of one s self. Individuals with
this humor style often allow themselves to be the butt of jokes, and laugh along when they are
disparaged by others, in the hopes of gaining others approval and acceptance. This humor style is used
to enhance relationships with others, but at the expense of positive feelings about self. It also involves
the use of humor as a form of defensive denial, to hide one s underlying negative feelings or avoid
dealing constructively with problems (Martin et. al., 2003, Martin, 2007). According to Yerlikaya
(2007), this humor style is used by an individual without considering the humor and his/her own
needs. An example which typifies this humor style is when an individual behaves happy and defies
his/her own feelings when

Lines Written A Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey
During the eighteenth century, it was a time where people were obsessed with rationality and scientific
precision. In response to this, artists created a literary movement the Romantic period. This period was
not just about love stories; it was a social movement revolved around the concept of imagination.
Poets used imagination to escape the troubles going on in the real world. Two authors who used their
imagination during this time are William Wordsworth and John Keats. Both Wordsworth and
Coleridge use the imagination to escape their present reality. While Wordsworth s speaker in Lines
written a few miles above Tintern Abbey succeeds in making his present moment better, in Keats La
Belle Dame Sans Merci , the speaker gets trapped in a dangerous past. Even though they both used
imagination, the outcome of it was different.
Lines written a few miles above Tintern Abbey is about how we change over time and the realization
of it. The speaker in this compares the person he used to be and the person he became. The speaker,
remembers almost every detail from the past of Tintern Abbey that he used to visit. Wordsworth uses
imagination by describing everything the speaker remembers what he saw and heard. From the sound
of the mountain springs (3), this dark sycamore (10), and the hedge rows (14). These memories make

My Best Athlete, Musician, Songwriter, And Ceo Of Fizzle Co.
Take a moment and think about your favorite athlete, musician, performer, engineer, or any notable
person that you admire. These people are often revered as being the most gifted of our kind, and we
often place their successes on a pedestal far beyond our reach. It is a widely accepted excuse their
natural abilities have allowed them to reach their expert level of knowledge and achievement.
However, modern research is yielding more proof that innate characteristics have less to do with a
person s talent and that hard work is the primary push factor towards those achievements. All of those
accomplished people from various fields have one thing in common: deliberate practice, the primary
source of success.
Being an incredibly underutilized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They concluded that the amount of time spent in deliberate practice and effort put forth, predicted
advancing further rounds in final competition far better than any other kind of preparation (Duckworth
126), consequently proving that deliberate practice is key to success. Nevertheless, deliberate practice
is less about quantity and more about the quality of practice. Practicing to reach a certain quota of time
spent on the task or following the same routine will yield limited results, quickly leading to
frustration. Repetition of the same motions does not mean excellence; defining goals and honing in on
weaknesses are the only way to avoid stagnation in practice. Deliberate practice requires a willingness
to refine skills and put forth a full effort something Olympic swimmer Katie Ledecky has strived to do
her entire career. Her coach has described her as someone who willingly does more deliberate practice
than anyone he s ever met (Duckworth 136). She knows how deeply gratifying practice is when done
correctly, and has six Olympic medals to prove it. While expert performers may seem to have reached
a godlike level of achievement, their successes are only attained through the patience required for
deliberate practice.
Even the most daunting of challenges or unfair disadvantages can be overcome through the use of
deliberate practice. According to Ericsson s study, there are very few characteristics that would allow

Penalizing Profanity Promotes Use of It Essay
Penalizing Profanity Promotes Use of It
Profane language is used once every six minutes on network television shows, every two minutes on
premium cable shows, and every three minutes in major motion pictures, according to a new study by
the Centre for Media and Public Affairs¹.
Upon learning this information, one would make the assumption that profanity is another common
attribute to our daily lives, such as brushing our teeth. But what is profane language? Webster s
dictionary defines it as being the condition or quality of being profane abusive, vulgar, or irreverent
and the use of such language. However, although society is being exposed to this coarse language
repeatedly, many are still being penalized for using it in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Why? Because of the Toronto District School Board s Zero Tolerance ². However, the usage of
tobacco and alcohol is also liable to a 20 day suspension. Whether this was intended for or not, the
TDSB is promoting the image that usage of profane language is equivalent to that of tobacco and
alcohol. Its guidelines state that The Toronto District School Board is committed to providing a safe
learning and working environment for all students, staff and visitors to our schools . This statement
leads one to believe that the TDSB s mission is to keep its students safe by omitting and eliminating
safety hazards. Does a swearing person generate a safety hazard? The clear answer is no.
Some people have taken the usage of profane language as far as legal punishment. During an incident
in Standish, Michigan in August of 1998, a man was charged for using profane language, in
accordance to a 104 year old law, which forbids cussing in front of women and children. ³ The
incident began when 24 year old Timothy Boomer fell out of his canoe while heading down stream.
As he flopped in the water, he began yelling in the direction of his friends, inadvertently using
profanity as a means to attract their attention, as well as communicate urgency. Shortly following his
outburst, his friends learned of three sheriff s deputies on the riverbank staring at them with
binoculars. To their dismay, one of the deputies handed Boomer a misdemeanour citation. The charge:

Abstract Data Clustering is key point used in data processing algorithms for Data Mining. Clustering
is a data mining technique used to place data elements into related groups without advance knowledge
of the group definitions. Popular clustering techniques include k means clustering. Clustering is
imperative idea in data investigation and data mining applications. In last decade, K means has been
popular clustering algorithm because of its ease of use and simplicity. Now days, as data size is
continuously increasing, some researchers started working over distributed environment such as
MapReduce to get high performance for big data clustering.
Keywords: Clustering, Akka Clustering, K Means, Distributed Environment.

Walmart in China
Walmart in China
Introduction
Walmart, founded by Sam Walton in 1962, is the largest retail company in the world. The low cost
strategy and hence the Every Day Low Prices (EDLP) strategy allowed Walmart to outperform
competitors in the US. Besides having stores in the US, Walmart has also expanded its market
worldwide. Walmart s entry into China was not surprising, given its population and growth potential.
Nevertheless, Walmart China had been struggling with its sales volume. It was only ranked twentieth
in sales out of all the Chinese chain stores in 2005. Walmart s strategic move in the US does not seem
to be applicable in the Chinese market. Different factors in the Chinese market blunted the cost
advantage of Walmart. This paper ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The intensity of rivalry is quite high in the Chinese retailing industry. Not only does Walmart China
have to compete with all the foreign retailers like Carrefour and Tesco, but also with the local ones.
The local retailers pose an even bigger threat to Walmart owing to their well established network and
prime locations. Moreover, exposing to foreign competition allows the local retailers to imitate the
foreigners techniques and hence improve their own supply chain efficiency. Also, the fact that the
local retailers have entrenched customer, supplier and distribution bases, further intensified the rivalry
in the retailing industry. (Farhoomand, 2006)
Lastly, the presence of income disparity in China makes the national merchandising plan more
challenging. China s Gini coefficient of 0.4 suggested that income inequality is at an alarming level.
There are poor individuals that cannot even afford buying daily necessity while the affluent customers
are constantly looking for luxurious products (Farhoomand, 2006). Given this huge income disparity,
Walmart China has been finding it difficult to develop its cost leadership strategy as they cannot
standardize their products easily and have to provide different products that meet different customers
needs.
Strategic Approaches and recommendations
All the factors in the Chinese retailing industry show that the cost leadership strategy adopted in the
US Walmart might not be applicable in China.

Indian Nationalism
IIndian nationalism
Indian nationalism refers to the many underlying forces that molded the Indian independence
movement, and strongly continue to influence the politics of India, as well as being the heart of many
contrasting ideologies that have caused ethnic and religious conflict in Indian society. Indian
nationalism often imbibes the consciousness of Indians that prior to 1947, India embodied the broader
Indian subcontinent and influenced a part of Asia, known as Greater India.
National consciousness in India
India has been unified under many emperors and governments in history. Ancient texts mention India
under emperor Bharata and Akhand Bharat, these regions roughly form the entities of modern day
greater India. Mauryan ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More than just Indian
Indian nationalism is as much a diverse blend of nationalistic sentiments as its people are ethnically
and religiously diverse. Thus the most influential undercurrents are more than just Indian in nature.
The most controversial and emotionally charged fiber in the fabric of Indian nationalism is religion.
Religion forms a major, and in many cases, the central element of Indian life. Ethnic communities are
diverse in terms of linguistics, social traditions and history across India.
Hindu Rashtra
An important influence upon Hindu consciousness arises from the time of Islamic empires in India,
during which many Hindu temples were destroyed and Hindus forcibly converted to Islam, and
millions of Hindus killed by Muslim invaders. Entering the 20th century, Hindus formed over 75% of
the population and thus unsurprisingly the backbone and platform of the nationalist movement.
Modern Hindu thinking desired to unite Hindu society across the boundaries of caste, lingustic groups
and ethnicity. In 1925, K.B. Hedgewar founded the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in Nagpur,
Maharashtra, which grew into the largest civil organization in the country, and more potent,
mainstream base of Hindu nationalism.
Vinayak Damodar Savarkar coined the term Hindutva for his ideology that described India as a Hindu
Rashtra, a Hindu nation. This ideology has become the

Three Personal Goals
Zandria Drakeford Professor Alexander English 101 20 January 2015 Three Personal Goals I Have at
This Time As we are in a New Year, I have set many personal goals that I would like to accomplish to
become a better individual. I have always been a person who set goals, whether they are long term or
short term, I always have them. I like to set goals for myself because goals give me guidance
throughout life. Now that a new year has approached, I am focusing on three main goals that I would
like to achieve at this time. Those three goals include managing my time better, to keep maintaining a
healthy lifestyle, and to continue to remain focus this upcoming semester. Managing my time better is
one of my personal goals at this time because time management has always been a challenge for me. I
would like to manage more of my time in studying especially because I tend to get distracted easily. If
I applied myself more in studying than I could definitely accomplish more and have a better
understanding of the material. Trying to balance a social life and schoolwork is another issue, where I
could manage my time differently. I find myself wanting to socialize with family and friends more
than applying myself to my schoolwork and that sometimes interfere with ... Show more content on

foods, and watched my calorie intake per day. Deciding to live a healthier lifestyle has changed my
life because I have gain more self confidence and have a positive reflection of myself. Therefore,

  • 2. Ear Lab Report Kristen Rodriguez Speech 1 October 4, 2015 Outline Introduction: *demonstrate a sound* Describe the structure of the ear. The Pinna is a ridged cartilage flap covered by skin. The Meatus is made up of skin and bone. The Tympanic Membrane, is a concave shaped layer of membrane with the visual of a flattened cone (AAC). The hammer doesn t really live up to its name, it looks more like a golf club. The Anvil resembles a snag tooth while the stirrup mirrors its name. The Cochlea is a membrane covered spiral shaped tube. The Auditory nerve is made up of several tubes ending in terminals. How sound makes its way through the parts of the ear. Sound travels through the outer ear hitting the Pinna, traveling through the Outer Ear Canal. Vibration ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Outer Ear: The Pinna gathers sound and sends it down the ear canal. The twists and folds of the pinna enhance high frequency (pitched) sounds and also help us to determine the direction of the sound source (AAC). Ear wax is developed by two thirds of the ear s external canal, the remaining is bone. The Meatus or ear canal is a 2 3 cm of cartilage that strengthens the sound coming in. Middle Ear: The Tympanic Membrane is hit by sound waves causing the eardrum to vibrate as such then transferring that energy into mechanical energy. Out of the eardrum and onto three bones, Malleus which is connected to the drum passing sounds on to the Incus that sits on top of the hammer and collects vibrations. Ending with the Stapes which is responsible for compression of the waves so they can travel through the inner ear. The Cochlea is home to many nerve cells that are capable of damaging and are impossible to grow back. The Cochlea s frequency selectivity refers to the ability of the auditory system to identify tonal components in complex sound. It largely depends on the filtering ability of the cochlea and its tuning properties are determine by the amplification mechanisms of the cochlear outer hair cells (BioMedical Engineering). The Auditory Nerve sends all electrical impulses to the brain, starting the process of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Comparison Of Aldous Huxley s Nineteen Eighty-Four George Orwell also took influence from authors who were active in his own lifetime, such as English author Aldous Huxley. Orwell s novel Nineteen Eighty Four most commonly gets compared to Aldous Huxley s novel Brave New World, which was originally published in 1932, seventeen years before Orwell published his own anti totalitarian work. Comparable to Nineteen Eighty Four, Brave New World is a dystopian novel in which a political agenda is discussed via a fabricated government. However, while similarities can be drawn, the two differ in their content. In Brave New World, Huxley s fictional society is controlled by drugs and efforts to distract its citizens who are immersed in a world of technology that could only have been dreamed of at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the same fashion that he took influence from the writings of other authors before him, authors in the generations after him have done the same. Margaret Atwood, whose novel The Handmaid s Tale (1985) has sparked political interest in its recent resurgence much as Orwell s works have, was inspired by Orwell s ideologies, mainly those represented in Animal Farm. As previously mentioned, Orwell is no novice at creating dystopian societies, a skill that Atwood, too, shows in The Handmaid s Tale, the plot of which centers around the handmaids (women) being used strictly for reproductive purposes. The more substantial influence, however, is the use of satire in literature. In Animal Farm, Orwell created a politically satirical society of animals meant to represent the regime under Joseph Stalin, whom he opposed. In The Handmaid s Tale, however, Atwood used satire for social justices rather than a political agenda, though the two often coincide. Atwood takes a dystopian view of a world in which women are used as objects to keep the population alive and uses it to make readers understand why feminism is needed; if women are not allowed to choose what they are able to do with their bodies, be it abortion or birth control, they will soon only be seen as a means of ... The following essay will demonstrate the changes the UK family has undergone since World War ǁ, the following essay will also throw light upon the changes in family types, economic activities of women , power distribution, laws and sexuality with respect to disciplines of sociology, economics, history and politics. More importance was given to the wife rather than the husband, as a companion and producer of children The family shows both continuity and changes which can be seen by looking at nuclear families and single parent families respectively. Before 1940s, marriage was considered an important part of society and thought to be a social institution essential for order. Divorce and single parent families were considered dreadful, sex outside marriage was not acceptable, it was a moral offense. The tempo of divorces was very low, but this social behavior soon ended in the post war era. By 1960s, this was no longer the case, as women started to work. They became much more independent, laws were changed and increase in divorces and cohabitation rates had shown that marriage was not compulsory in one s life. Family structure has been changed and there is about one and a quarter million single parents. A family making up to 19% of all families with children, the number of single parents has almost doubled since the early 1970s. According to census 2001 report and labor force survey, the rate of married couple (marriages) has decreased over the last ten years, (accounting for 71 per cent of families in 2006, compared with 76 per cent in 1996). There were many alliances around the world to balance the power of Europe. Some examples were the triple alliance and the Triple Entente. These alliances consisted of Germany, Austro Hungary, and Italy for the Triple alliance. The Triple Entente consisted of Great Britain, France, and Russia. There are many other reasons why World War 1 happened, many factors that are going to be in this paper that I m writing. The main one that I believe was the immediate cause of World War 1 was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. There were many nationalist ideas running around the world. Many new countries were forming in declining and fragmenting empires. Europe was a bomb waiting to be detonated, the only problem is, who s going to do it. Nationalism was especially high in Serbia. They wanted a bigger nation and wanted to form their own empire. Many countries had minority Groups in their country and the cultures were very different than what nations had. People also understand that a crime is doing something that is wrong or illegal that there are punishments that fit the crime. However, there are also times when the punishment does not fit the crime or is excessive. People that commit these crimes do so in hoping that they won t get caught but when they do they know that they are going to have a punishment that fits the crime. This paper is going to look at the difference between misdemeanors and felonies and the punishment that go with the crimes, and the sentencing guidelines in which the courts are supposed to follow, and process in which a criminal can request a sentence reduction, or appeal their current sentence. People do things every day that they know are wrong, with little or no thought to the consequences. There are consequences for things that we do wrong, whether it s a crime or not. Whether or not people want to admit, they want to feel as if justice has been served, and often times in order for them to feel this way they want the person to serve a lot of time in prison. • 9. Active Voice Vs. Passive Voice Why is it important to write in an Active Voice vs. Passive Voice ? I believe active voice is important because it allows us to write a lower grade level that our intended audiences can understand and relate to. Active voice creates clear action it is less wordy, which is direct to the reader or to the audience. Also, the writer uses a common and present language to connect with the readers so they can better understand the written material. On the other hand, passive voice is indirect and has weak verbs and may use present progressives which can be very confusing to the reader. Passive voice is used when the writer does not know the audience. However, in the health care field, it is important that you know your audiences not by personally, ... It is a concept that correlates the emergence of new features and types of social life and economic order in a culture; often called modernization, post industrial, consumer, media, or multinational capitalistic societies. In Modernity, we have the sense or idea that the present is discontinuous with the past, that through a process of social, technological, and cultural change (either through improvement, that is, progress, or through decline) life in the present is fundamentally different from life in the past. Indeed, respect for the self determining decisions or interests of patients now is an underlying consideration for most professional codes of practice and also patient codes of rights (Cruess Cruess, 2008; MacLeod, Wilson Malpas, 2012). The dilemma now is that fear of losing autonomy or dignity during the dying process could lead some patients to request a hastened death. In a study investigating physician attitudes and behaviors when utilizing end of life decisions that hastened death, researchers found physicians who would submit to a patient s request for an assisted death stated that respect for the patient s autonomy was important in their decision making (Fried, Stein, O Sullivan, Brock, Novack, 1993). • 41. Lines Written A Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey During the eighteenth century, it was a time where people were obsessed with rationality and scientific precision. In response to this, artists created a literary movement the Romantic period. This period was not just about love stories; it was a social movement revolved around the concept of imagination. Poets used imagination to escape the troubles going on in the real world. Two authors who used their imagination during this time are William Wordsworth and John Keats. Both Wordsworth and Coleridge use the imagination to escape their present reality. While Wordsworth s speaker in Lines written a few miles above Tintern Abbey succeeds in making his present moment better, in Keats La Belle Dame Sans Merci , the speaker gets trapped in a dangerous past. Even though they both used imagination, the outcome of it was different. Lines written a few miles above Tintern Abbey is about how we change over time and the realization of it. The speaker in this compares the person he used to be and the person he became. The speaker, remembers almost every detail from the past of Tintern Abbey that he used to visit. Wordsworth uses imagination by describing everything the speaker remembers what he saw and heard. From the sound of the mountain springs (3), this dark sycamore (10), and the hedge rows (14). These memories make him realize he has been cooped up in the city. The speaker claims these memories kept him sane while living in the din/ Of towns and cities (25 26). ... These people are often revered as being the most gifted of our kind, and we often place their successes on a pedestal far beyond our reach. It is a widely accepted excuse their natural abilities have allowed them to reach their expert level of knowledge and achievement. However, modern research is yielding more proof that innate characteristics have less to do with a person s talent and that hard work is the primary push factor towards those achievements. All of those accomplished people from various fields have one thing in common: deliberate practice, the primary source of success. Being an incredibly underutilized ... They concluded that the amount of time spent in deliberate practice and effort put forth, predicted advancing further rounds in final competition far better than any other kind of preparation (Duckworth 126), consequently proving that deliberate practice is key to success. Nevertheless, deliberate practice is less about quantity and more about the quality of practice. Practicing to reach a certain quota of time spent on the task or following the same routine will yield limited results, quickly leading to frustration. Repetition of the same motions does not mean excellence; defining goals and honing in on weaknesses are the only way to avoid stagnation in practice. Deliberate practice requires a willingness to refine skills and put forth a full effort something Olympic swimmer Katie Ledecky has strived to do her entire career. Her coach has described her as someone who willingly does more deliberate practice than anyone he s ever met (Duckworth 136). She knows how deeply gratifying practice is when done correctly, and has six Olympic medals to prove it. While expert performers may seem to have reached a godlike level of achievement, their successes are only attained through the patience required for deliberate practice. Even the most daunting of challenges or unfair disadvantages can be overcome through the use of deliberate practice. Penalizing Profanity Promotes Use of It Essay Penalizing Profanity Promotes Use of It Profane language is used once every six minutes on network television shows, every two minutes on premium cable shows, and every three minutes in major motion pictures, according to a new study by the Centre for Media and Public Affairs¹. Upon learning this information, one would make the assumption that profanity is another common attribute to our daily lives, such as brushing our teeth. But what is profane language? Webster s dictionary defines it as being the condition or quality of being profane abusive, vulgar, or irreverent and the use of such language. Because of the Toronto District School Board s Zero Tolerance ². However, the usage of tobacco and alcohol is also liable to a 20 day suspension. Whether this was intended for or not, the TDSB is promoting the image that usage of profane language is equivalent to that of tobacco and alcohol. Its guidelines state that The Toronto District School Board is committed to providing a safe learning and working environment for all students, staff and visitors to our schools . This statement leads one to believe that the TDSB s mission is to keep its students safe by omitting and eliminating safety hazards. Does a swearing person generate a safety hazard? The clear answer is no. Some people have taken the usage of profane language as far as legal punishment. During an incident in Standish, Michigan in August of 1998, a man was charged for using profane language, in accordance to a 104 year old law, which forbids cussing in front of women and children. ³ The incident began when 24 year old Timothy Boomer fell out of his canoe while heading down stream. As he flopped in the water, he began yelling in the direction of his friends, inadvertently using profanity as a means to attract their attention, as well as communicate urgency. Shortly following his outburst, his friends learned of three sheriff s deputies on the riverbank staring at them with binoculars. To their dismay, one of the deputies handed Boomer a misdemeanour citation. The charge: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 46. Walmart in China Walmart in China Introduction Walmart, founded by Sam Walton in 1962, is the largest retail company in the world. The low cost strategy and hence the Every Day Low Prices (EDLP) strategy allowed Walmart to outperform competitors in the US. Besides having stores in the US, Walmart has also expanded its market worldwide. Walmart s entry into China was not surprising, given its population and growth potential. Nevertheless, Walmart China had been struggling with its sales volume. It was only ranked twentieth in sales out of all the Chinese chain stores in 2005. Walmart s strategic move in the US does not seem to be applicable in the Chinese market. Different factors in the Chinese market blunted the cost advantage of Walmart. This paper ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The intensity of rivalry is quite high in the Chinese retailing industry. Not only does Walmart China have to compete with all the foreign retailers like Carrefour and Tesco, but also with the local ones. The local retailers pose an even bigger threat to Walmart owing to their well established network and prime locations. Moreover, exposing to foreign competition allows the local retailers to imitate the foreigners techniques and hence improve their own supply chain efficiency. Also, the fact that the local retailers have entrenched customer, supplier and distribution bases, further intensified the rivalry in the retailing industry. (Farhoomand, 2006) Lastly, the presence of income disparity in China makes the national merchandising plan more challenging. China s Gini coefficient of 0.4 suggested that income inequality is at an alarming level. There are poor individuals that cannot even afford buying daily necessity while the affluent customers are constantly looking for luxurious products (Farhoomand, 2006). Given this huge income disparity, Walmart China has been finding it difficult to develop its cost leadership strategy as they cannot standardize their products easily and have to provide different products that meet different customers needs. Strategic Approaches and recommendations All the factors in the Chinese retailing industry show that the cost leadership strategy adopted in the US Walmart might not be applicable in China. ... Indian nationalism often imbibes the consciousness of Indians that prior to 1947, India embodied the broader Indian subcontinent and influenced a part of Asia, known as Greater India. More than just Indian Indian nationalism is as much a diverse blend of nationalistic sentiments as its people are ethnically and religiously diverse. Thus the most influential undercurrents are more than just Indian in nature. The most controversial and emotionally charged fiber in the fabric of Indian nationalism is religion. Religion forms a major, and in many cases, the central element of Indian life. Ethnic communities are diverse in terms of linguistics, social traditions and history across India. Hindu Rashtra An important influence upon Hindu consciousness arises from the time of Islamic empires in India, during which many Hindu temples were destroyed and Hindus forcibly converted to Islam, and millions of Hindus killed by Muslim invaders. Entering the 20th century, Hindus formed over 75% of the population and thus unsurprisingly the backbone and platform of the nationalist movement. Modern Hindu thinking desired to unite Hindu society across the boundaries of caste, lingustic groups and ethnicity. In 1925, K.B. Hedgewar founded the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in Nagpur, Maharashtra, which grew into the largest civil organization in the country, and more potent, mainstream base of Hindu nationalism.
