Carson Silent Spring Analysis
Carson s introduction to her Silent Spring portrays the utter destruction of the environment caused
by us humans disdain towards nature through our constant use of pesticides; therefore, she urges
her audience to recognize the significance of maintaining the health of our environment lest we
want to live in her bleak description of our future Earth. Carson opens up with the juxtaposition of
two worlds: one beautiful and untouched, and one deserted and barren. Her change in diction from
positive to malign illustrates the contrast, going from words like prosperous and beauty to blight,
death, and sickness. By showing the complete opposite sides of the spectrum, Carson exemplifies
how ruinous the use of pesticides is on the environment,

Women s Pain Perception in Childbirth
This is a study that focused on eighty three women and examined the effects of cultural and
educational influences on the pain in childbirth. The eighty three women are divided into Middle
Eastern women and Western women. The women ranged in ages from nineteen to thirty eight.
There were thirty people from the Western group and that consisted of women whose mothers
were born in Europe, the US or another English speaking country. There were fifty three women
from the Middle Eastern Group and that consisted of women whose mothers were born in Asia,
North African or another Middle Eastern countries. The women were classified by the cultures but
were also classified by their level education. Those who had twelve years or less of schooling were
in the low education group. Those women who had more than twelve years of schooling were in the
high education group. In the Western group sixty six percent were in the high education group.
While the Middle Eastern group only had thirty three point nine percent in the high education
group. In order to perform this study they recorded their information they received from the
procedure. The four measures were painperception, behavioral ratings, extroversion and the
Miller Behavioral Style Scale. Pain perception is a scale ranged from zero to one hundred that is
used to rate the labor pains. Behavioral ratings were used based on Meisles Iticksohn and was
rated from zero to four. A zero meant that no behavior was observed and a four meant

Review Of The Great White Man
Getting back to the idea of how music plays an important role in this film, however, we must see
how Schweitzer s authority is challenged. Schweitzer tries to drown out the African boy s
drumming with his organ, but the drumming persists. The African boy, Higginson argues, is trying
to invite Schweitzer to a musical dialogue. However, the Great White Man refuses to hear the
drum s musical offering; yet, the drum responds to the rhythm of the keyboard. The part where the
colonial powers influenced this boy is when Schweitzer gives this boy a trumpet to play instead of
the drum as a Christmas present. On a more positive note, Higginson argues that on the day that
Gabon achieves independence, the trumpet player frees himself from the Great... Show more content

Dieng, unable to read, signs contracts that he does not know for sure what exactly they entail. He
even needed to pay someone to read the letter from Abdou that said Abdou sent him a money order.
He also cannot cash in the money order without an identity card or something with [his] picture on
it . And in order to get an identity card, according to Sarah L. Lincoln in her article titled
Consumption and Dependency in Mandabi , he needs he needs a birth certificate, three photographs
and fifty cents. Another impact of colonialism is that cities like Dakar have no employment
opportunities. Abdou has gone to Paris and picks up a working class job as a street sweeper. He has
also gone to Paris in order to be educated in trade. He works all day and studies at night according
to Lincoln. This is just one example of many in which Africans see Europe as a land that has much
more opportunities. Even when Africans do live in European countries, they are not usually
thriving so much, as evident by the fact that Abdou is working a modest, low paying job and he
is not having a very nice time in Paris. Still, like many, he is willing to sacrifice his enjoyment for
a while in order to have a better future. Senegal has also adopted a credit system that exists in the
western world. According to Lincoln, Sembene argues that paying on credit can ruin a family
financially, which is shown by the end of the film when Dieng s and his family lose even their
house.

How Can Resourcing and Development “Add Value” in the...
According to Ann Marie E. McSwain, Assistant Professor at Lincoln University, leadership is
about capacity: the capacity of leaders to listen and observe, to use their expertise as a starting
point to encourage dialogue between all levels of decision making, to establish processes and
transparency in decision making, to articulate their own value and visions clearly but not impose
them. Leadership is about setting and not just reacting to agendas, identifying problems, and
initiating change that makes for substantial improvement rather than managing change. In the
modern workplace, a good leader can lead the team to success and vice versa. The importance of a
good leader in an organization cannot be doubted. However, one of the most... Show more content

The most obvious formation of entrepreneurship is to start a new business. Entrepreneurship means
that the business is run by an owner which call entrepreneur. Partnership is similar to
entrepreneurship other than the organization is managed by at least two or above owners. Limited
company means it is an organization which shareholders whose liability is limited by shares.
Entrepreneurship is usually some small business and has fewer employees than limited
organization which runs large business. If the business runs smooth and expand, entrepreneurship
can turn into a limited organization. After choosing the right method of people sourcing within an
organization, the organization can benefit from different kinds of advantages. With the right
practice of people sourcing method in the right size of organization, the organization will be
added value. Add value can mean contributing directly to organization goals and deliver business
objectives. Every organization has its goal and objective because these goals and objective can
help the organization to define business and drive itself to success. Since the organization s goal

Speech On Maggi

Maggi staged a comeback in 100 cities and towns with over 300 stockists, apart from being sold on
Snapdeal, hoping to regain the trust of its loyal clientele.
NEW DELHI: Factory fresh boxes of Maggi were propped up against the wall at the business centre
of Oberoi Hotel in the Capital, as Suresh Narayanan, chairman and MD of Nestle India, said:
Lijiye, muh Maggi kijiye (playing on the popular Indian saying Lijiye, muh meetha kijiye ).
It was just a matter of coincidence that Narayanan was re launching Maggi on Dhanteras, an

Regulated Power Supply Paper
(Moodle) Week 8 Regulated Power Supply (2015)
AC:
The Alternating current flows one way, then another way, continually reversing direction. It is
usually called an AC or Mains. With the UK mains supply about 230Volts and has a frequency of
50Hz Hertz which mean it will change the direction, and back again 50 times a second. Alternating
current is used in homes, transformers, and other places.
Rectifier:
Rectifier converts alternating current to direct current the process is known as rectification. The
rectifier is an electronic circuit. Rectifier diode lets the electrical current flow in only one
direction and is mainly used for power supply operations. They can handle higher current flow
than regular ones. The one that is located on switch mode power supply is 800 V and 1 Amp.
The diode 3 and 2 will act as open switches, diodes 1 and 4 will act as closed switches and will
start conducting the energy coming flowing thru.
Smoothing Capacitor:
The smoothing capacitor job is to convert the half wave or full wave output of the rectifier into
smooth DC. It is mostly used to remove ripple from the output of the direct current power supply.
On the Switch mode power supply paper sheet we have identified that the smoothing ... Show more

The transformer can work either way to decrease or increase the voltage. Transformer that
increase voltage is called step up transformer, and one that decrease voltage is set down.
Transformers only work if alternating current is given to the primary coil. If direct current was
supplied, there would be no current in the secondary coil. The transformer has two coil system
primary and secondary system. The magnetic force of the first set of wires causes the second set
to change the power. The one set is an incoming voltage which is usually thicker and the other one

National Security Vs Homeland Security
The difference between national security and homeland security seems to be ambiguous after
reading the question. However, Newman (2002) indicated that homeland security as a subset of
national security. From my perspective, homeland security, falls within the purview of a larger
capacity of national security. Both national securityand homeland security seeks to protect and
defend the nation s interest. One of the goals of national security is to thwart our enemies agenda
by preventing the enemies from threatening the United States, and its partners with weapons of
mass destruction, whereas one of the goals of homeland security is to Protect the United States
people, the critical infrastructure, and key resources (Caudle, 2009).

Fear of Polio in the 1950s Essay examples
Fear of Polio in the 1950s Paralytic poliomyelitis, polio , held a reign of terror over this nation
for decades. But unless you were born before 1955, polio may seem to be just another ephemeral
disease that has been nonexistent for years. Those born before 1955 remember having a great
fear of this horrible disease which crippled thousands of once active, healthy children. This
disease had no cure and no identified causes, which made it all the more terrifying. People did
everything that they had done in the past to prevent the spread of disease, such as quarantining
areas, but these tactics never seemed to work. Polio could not be contained. Many people did not
have the money to care for a family member with polio. This was one of the... Show more content

In an attempt to control the disease, bewildered health officials reinstituted the usual rules of
sanitation which they would later learn had worsened the threat of polio. They advised against
open drains and unscreened windows. Parents were instructed to keep their children well
bathed, well rested, well fed, and away from crowds. Bathing suits were locked away in closets,
and nobody went to the public pools. When polio struck, movie theaters were shut, camps and
schools were closed, drinking fountains were abandoned, draft inductions suspended, and
nonessential meetings were canceled until the epidemic appeared to be over for the time
being.[1] These precautions were harmless, but not particularly helpful. In the past, these
precautions proved very effective in stopping the spread of diseases such as influenza and
plague. For three decades now, people still did not know why they were getting their disease.
And for three decades now, doctors, epidemiologists, and laboratory researchers were trying to
figure out how the disease was spread.[2] Nobody has ever discovered completely how it is that
polio is spread. The best evidence suggests that the virus is excreted in the stool and passed
through hand to hand or hand to mouth contact by people who do not wash their hands properly or
often enough. It was during the first few years of the fifties and many years before then, that health

Social Motivation Of Social Ministry
Introduction Many churches have moved beyond the atonement only gospel to become socially
involved in their community in providing ministries such as, relief services, personal development
services and community development services. This strategy, of social involvement by the church
has been welcomed by many and has increased positive perception of the church and by extension
amplified the impact of the church. But, what is the motivation behind these social involvements
of the church. Is it something that they do in order to be more effective and relevant in sharing
the gospel? Or is it something they do because it is genetically linked to their faith? In this paper,
the writer will argue that in principle, social ministry should not be done as a means to make the
church relevant. That is, the motivation behind church based social interventions should not be
solely based on being relevant in order to be more effective in carrying out its mission, which is to
make disciples. The writer proposes that social ministry ought to be a natural outworking of the
church. As such, a church cannot be considered authentic if it is not involved in social ministry.
Self benefit Motivation If the church is motivated to be socially involved because of the need to
make the ministry of church relevant, in order to be more effective in carrying out its mission, then
the focus is not on the need of the person or community but, rather it is on the church achieving its
missional goal. In this

Manet s Bar At The Folies Bergere
Manet s Bar at the Folies BergГЁre, one of the most perplexing and mysterious paintings to exist,
holds deep meaning and reflects French social life in this era. This work of art illustrates a Parisian
nightclub, the Folies BergГЁre, which catered to a diverse set of acts including the circus and
ballet. It is here that the Barmaid works and where we see the interaction between her and the
gentleman. This is where an extremely important concept of the work appears perspective.
Throughout the years there have been numerous interpretations and claims concerning why Manet
painted the scene as he did, whether or not the perspective is accurate, and how all of the elements
including the mirror and woman come together. Another fascinating element that comes from this
scene is the social aspects of French life during this time. This element comes into play in the
relationship between the barmaid and the gentleman in the top hat, the woman s expression, and the
occupation of the woman. Although there are many enlightening interpretations of Manet s work,
there is one that is particularly strong. Manet s use of perspective and inclusion of social matters
both engages the viewer and leads them to ponder what it is exactly that they are viewing. A
reason this painting has sparked so much interest and analysis is the mind boggling perspective and
reflection. One of the first observations the viewer makes is that the barmaid and the barmaid s
reflection do not go together. Pullman

Capital Punishment Should Be Eliminated
Throughout the history of humanity, punishments have been in place for the wrongful acts of
citizens within governmental systems of all kinds. In America during the early days of the country,
the death penalty was a more viable solution than it appears today due to the quality of the prisons,
which couldn t sustain prisoners long term. (Von Drehle, 2015). Today, this is not an issue with
prisons that are provided both by the state and federal governments and that are fully capable of
holding offenders throughout the length of a life sentence (Von Drehle, 2015). However, many will
argue that capital punishmentshould be eliminated. Foes of the death penalty are split into two
groups with one that argues that capital punishment should and will cease based upon public
support, that it doesn t deter crime, and the current processes of executions are too costly and
problematic. The other will take a more humanitarian approach and claim that it is not the role of
the government to decide the fate of an individual, and that crimes punishable by death are not
justifiable. Determent, morals, severity of the crime, and revenge are among the many arguments
that are geared in favor of protecting a centuries old government system. These groups give more
pragmatic reasons as arguments. Currently, the United States is alone among other democracies by
not being in similar standing as western European countries, such as Germany and France, where
the death penalty has been completely

Example Of Behavior Modification
The behavior that I will be choosing to modify is the increase in studying. This is a behavior that
is extremely beneficial to me because I not only learn what I need to know, but I learn how
manage time better and how to set my priorities better. Studying is something I need to modify
because studying to me is something that is difficult to do, mainly because I feel it is like a
chore more than anything else. My mindset on studying is my biggest issue and is the biggest
reason studying is a behavior modification I need to increase. The most I want to study a day is
at least two hours for at least two classes, so a total of four hours a day of studying. Most of the
time when I study, I get sidetracked easily and end up using up time on something else rather than
studying. The antecedent of this behavior may be the problem, because I am not putting myself in
an environment where I can study the best or potentially learn the best. The consequence of that is
that I end up not studying affectively enough for my classes and not doing as good as I would

Jane, By Jane Eyre Essay
Throughout the first section of the novel, we are constantly reminded of the barriers in which Jane
is suppressed by. Through this figurative element we can come to terms with the development of
the character of Jane Eyre.
Jane is an intelligent, honest, plain featured young girl forced to contend with oppression,
inequality, and hardship. Although she meets with a series of individuals who threaten her
autonomy, Jane repeatedly succeeds at asserting herself and maintains her principles of justice,
human dignity, and morality. She also values intellectual and emotional fulfilment. Her strong
belief in gender and social equality challenges the Victorian prejudices against women and the poor.
The development of Jane s character is central to the novel. From the beginning, Jane possesses a
sense of self worth and dignity, a commitment to justice and principle, a trust in God, and a
passionate disposition. Her integrity is continually tested over the course of the novel, and Jane
must learn to balance the frequently conflicting aspects of herself as to find gratification.
After Jane s departure and emotional liberation from Gateshead, we are invited onto the next

of religious aspects. It is in the next chapter where we are introduced to two figurehead characters
in the path of Jane s development, Helen Burns and Maria Temple. In lesson, Helen informs Jane of

From 1678 to 1681 the idea of The Popish Plot took over conversation and became an obsession
in the country. The Plot, which this time was entirely fictional, was created to scare the country
into believing that Catholics where conspiring to dethrone Charles II like they had done in 1605
with the gunpowder plot. The cartoon shows parliament under one archway in session and Guy
Fawkes in the other with the gunpowder to blow up parliament. This false plot was designed to
create fear amongst the protestant community, it replicates the gunpowder plot of 1605, this print
and the idea of a second plot increased the division in society for Catholics, a significant impact on
the treatment of Catholics after the plot as even 80 years later the puritans still printed propaganda,
the cartoon also implies the shunning off know Catholics in society. This occurrence was one of
many replications of the plot, causing severe repercussions for Catholics.
Social division after the plot included Catholics going against each other; those connected with the

affected the sentencing of other Catholics who were included in the plot or in few cases only

The Cause Of The French Revolution
The Cause of the French Revolution
Throughout history, what remains true is that the people are the ones who start a revolution. And
when around 98% of a population is suffering to make a living, there is little hope for those in
power. Taxes levied only on the common folk, crippling wars that left France with huge debts, and
the careless spending of the upper classes ultimately lead to the start of the revolution. The main
political cause was that the King had too much power but weak foreign policy leads to economic
downturn. The main social cause was that French society was too imbalanced but it was truly
economic exploitation of the lower class. The French Revolution had many probable causes, all
linked together, but none as important and defining as the economic aspect.
There were social and political causes to the French Revolution but both derived from economic
cause. The imbalance of social classes was in part the root of the lower classes hatred towards
the upper class. But it was because the lower class had no mobility in French Society that people
started looking for change. Moving up in rank or position was nearly impossible and those with
power, always had the power. This proved to be troublesome as one s hard work would not reap any
benefits and would still have to pay heavy taxes to provide lavish lives for those in the upper
class. As Dr. Gail Bossenga states in his book, Origins of the French Revolution, perhaps the

Effects Of Sexting In Teenagers
Most teenagers see sexting or sending nudes as a normal teenager thing. One thing they don t know
is the risks they re running by sending inappropriate messages or pictures to another person. In
order to try and prevent sexting amongst teens, multiple laws have been enforced throughout the
years. These laws are there to protect and help teens understand the seriousness of sexting.
Sexting nude images of teens under the age of 18 is seen as child pornography and is illegal in the
United States. Most people believe that an offence only occurs if a young person is under
pressure to make and send an explicit image, or if a private photo sent to one person is
distributed more widely. But most young girls British Conservative Party politician, Sarah
Newton, speaks to see no problem in sending a provocative photo to their boyfriend for fun they
often tell her that teachers and their parents think the same . An underage teen sending a nude
image can land them big trouble and the same goes for the receiver. In a case between 19 year old
Russell Foster and his 14 year old girlfriend Amber, Russell faced four years in prison and was
registered as a sex offender. Even though Russell and Amber are now married, Russell s record
has made it hard for him to find work, and being a registered sex offender has limited where the
family can live.

Haim G. Ginott s Congruent Communication Model of Discipline
Congruent Communication Model of Discipline In 1971, Haim G. Ginott developed congruent
communication model that highlights the critical role of communication in discipline. Ginott
believes that the teacher is the influential element in the classroom and is like a parent that holds
the authority to make or break a students personality (Charles, 2011; Ginott, 1971).
Ginott s Key Ideas
1.Discipline: Discipline is a series of little successes.
2.Self Discipline: The most important element is a teacher s own self discipline.
3.Sane Messages: Address the situation not the students personality.
4.Congruent Communication: Teachers use congruent communication that is harmonious with
students own feelings.
5.Students Character: Teachers at their worst attack and label students characters.
6.Model Behavior: Teacher should model the behavior they expect to observe in their students.
7.Invite Cooperation: Inviting collaboration from students is greatly preferable to challenging it.
8.Express Anger: Teacher express anger but in appropriate ways.
9.Labeling the Disabling: Labeling students disables them.
10.Sarcasm: Sarcasm is almost always dangerous.
11.Perils of Praise: Avoid the perils of praise.
Congruent Communication
Congruent Communication means addresses situations, not students character or personality.
Ginott emphasized those teachers at their best, using congruent communication (Manning and
Bucher, 2001; Morris, 1996).

Sweeney Research Paper
Josh Sweeney Brings Sled Hockey to Portland
Sled hockey was invented in the early 1960s at the Stockholm rehabilitation center. A group of
Swedes wanted to continue to play hockey despite their disability. The game follows the ice
hockey rules with a few exceptions. The players sit on specially designed sleds that have two
hockey blades under them. Furthermore, each player uses two specially designed sticks with
metal pick on the ends. This helps the person propel themselves across the ice. Finally, the goalie
uses specially designed gloves with metal picks sewn to the back of each glove. This helps the
goalie to maneuver during the game. http://www.usahockey.com/sledhockey

Analysis of A P by John Updike
A P (supermarket) is a short story written by the hardworking and highly productive John Updike
and narrated in first person by a 19 year old protagonist and cashier named Sammy. It was
published in 1961 and is about Sammy s change of character and coming of age. Updike uses the
various shifts in tone, great attention to detail, and a great deal of symbolism to portray the
significant change. The opening sentence In walks three girls in nothing but bathing suits
(par.1) sets up the colloquial tone; it s as if Sammy was talking to a friend. As the story goes on,
the tone shifts from being informal to a little comical. He refers to the people in the checkout
lane as sheep and scared pigs in a chute. However, by the end the tone shifts yet again and
becomes heroic. The act of quitting a job (climax) in defiance of Lengel s (manager and
antagonist) unfair treatment of the girls is a strong indication of change in character. Sammy
hoped the girls would notice his act of heroism. Ironically, the girls do not hear him. Instead,
they head out forever disappearing from his life. Sammy s description of A P (setting) gives a
dull and conventional illustration. On the contrary, the description of the girls was sharp and
bright, characterizing him as a typical hormone driven teenager. He describes the first girl, Plaid
(nickname), as a chunky kid, with a good tan dressed in a bright green plaid two piece bathing suit
(par. 1). The second girl, Big Tall

Summary Of Four Children For Sale By Roland Barthes
Roland Barthes describes the punctum of a photograph as that accident which pricks me (but also
bruises me, is poignant to me) (Barthes 27). The punctum of a photo is not meant to be the focus
of the image. It is the detail that sparks interest. In the photograph 4 Children For Sale, credited to
Bettmann Corbis, the punctum for me is the sign or maybe the facial expressionsof the children or
the mother herself. I say for me because the punctum of a photo is not the same for every person.
Every person sees an image differently. Different things will be more prominent to different people
because the punctum is unique to the specific spectator.
However, I do not know exactly which detail acts as the punctum. According to Barthes, What I can
name cannot really prick me (51). The punctum does not necessarily have to be one detail though. If
the punctum is what stings at you, what ultimately bothers you, the punctum can be made up of
multiple pricks. Multiple subtle details that stop you and make you think of the photo in a new
light. Overall, the punctum is what makes you question and what engages you to the photo.
The sign is at least one of the sources of the punctum which can be described as what I add to the
photograph and what is nonetheless already there (55). The focus of the photograph should be the
children considering they are the ones being advertised and yet my attention is constantly drawn to
the actual sign and not simply its message. The sign is an anomaly

How Does Poe Create Tension In The Cask Of Amontillado
In The Cask of Amontillado, Poe uses the aspect of time as an element of tension and
foreshadowing to the story. The selection of time and place also plays an important role in the
story. The carnival gives Montresor a perfect opportunity to appear in disguise, to locate his
intoxicated companion and lure him into his vindictive trap. Carnivalis a time of happiness and
celebration for everyone, but in this tale, it is a time for revenge and death because by the end,
Fortunato is in precisely the opposite of a carnival atmosphere (Reynolds 105). Montresor states
that it is about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season (Poe 217)

I have been involved with the Sherwood Community Association (SCA) for approximately 6
years. Within the organization, I am responsible for representing the interests of nearly 5000
Sherwood residents, leading the efforts for corporate sponsorship and co leading a committee that
works with municipal and provincial representatives to provide aesthetic upgrades to the

levels of funding to better support our constituents and has helped obtain aesthetic upgrades to
more than an acre of community land. It has been an incredibly humbling experience to work

Many of the musicians during the 1980s have maintained staying power and are still popular
today. Other artists enjoyed a modicum of success during the decade and they are not even
widely recognized today, save for the television programs that strive to reunite the bands and
give exposure to artists of the time. Following is some descriptions and explanations of the
bands and interests that helped to change the face of music in the 80s. MTV, or Music
Television, may have been the single most influential entity in music industry during the 1980s .
Premiering in 1981, MTV gave bands and artists greater exposure for their music in a greater
and more widely popular medium. The first video ever played on MTV was aptly titled Video
Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles. Duran Duran is one of the more popular 80s bands that
enjoyed the exposure that MTV gave them, too. Many experts have said that MTV is what made
Duran Duran one of the most popular bands to come out of the 1980s era. New Wave and
Synthpop was another genre of music that came about during this era. This form held on to many
of the attributes of the popular Punk Rock genre coming out of the 1970s, but it had different
characteristics. While the Punk Rock of the 1970s was a retaliation against the government and the
establishment, the New Wave and Synthpop forms were meant to be anti corporation in a more

Discrimination: treating a person or group differently when the reason is not relevant (Kaye and

the harm it causes to the media/justice system create reverse discrimination, and affect college

Introduction
Life is a cycle of learning and the dissemination of what we ve learned. In each day of our lives
we learn something new to add to our list of skills and knowledge. When I first entered university,
I thought the writing courses were useless and just a waste of time since we all can write. Later,
however, I realized how those courses are beneficial in improving our critical thinking and
communication skills not only the style of writing.

look for relevant sources. I also found it very difficult to build an argument and track down
solutions. Now, on the other hand, I can differentiate between the sources that are valuable and...

Providing that, this course assisted me in thinking through my strengths and weaknesses. To start
with, I find it very easy to deliver an idea now, and communicate with the readers through
writing. Looking back through my essays, I noticed that at the beginning of this course my voice
was not present. Now, however, I learned how to set forth an argument, stand for it, and present it
using logical facts, keeping in mind that my voice should be there. Additionally, my grammar and
vocabulary has improved, as a result, it enhanced my writing and helped keep the readers focused.
I also use lot of transitional words to link my ideas and allow the essay to flow smoothly and
coherently. As for my weaknesses, I noted that I keep drifting away from the main idea. This
makes it very hard for the reader to grasp the purpose quickly. In addition, I take ages to write an
essay, and this frustrates me sometimes thus, I start loosing interest and influence. Altogether, I
think learning never ends, therefore, I ll keep trying to overcome my weaknesses and add more
skills to my writing strengths list.
Conclusion
As a final point, the 102 writing course helped me improve my writing skills tremendously. Our
professor used two techniques in class to help us develop our essays which are Peer reviews and
rubrics. Peer reviews gave me an insight of what other people think of what I wrote, and their

Southwest A Success Story Of Organizational Change
Southwest a Success Story in Organizational Change
Why is it that when organizations announce upcoming changes to their employees they are rarely
excited about it? You do not see them jovially discussing what is going to happen next, and/or how
these changes are going to make their organization better. No, none of this is happening. Most of
them are worried and wondering how these changes will affect them, and what their roles are going
to be. This mindset makes organizational change difficult. Society in general just does not like
change, nor are they comfortable with it.
Therefore, when an organization can successfully implement change, people notice and researchers
want to study them. They do this so they can formulate a change theory and teach it to other
organizations that are experiencing the same situation(s). One company that has continually
evolved, made changes, and has been successful at it is Southwest Airlines. How have Southwest
Airlines been so successful, what was their core strategy, and what part has their differentiation
strategy played in their success?
Air Southwest was incorporated on March 15, 1967 (1966 to 1971, 2016), at a time when price

A Comprehensive Analysis Of Online Gambling Essay
The cheap and accessible Internet combined with the growing confidence of consumers in online
commerce has enabled the increasing popularity of interactive gambling which is defined as online
and remote wagering and gaming through interactive media devices (Gainsbury, Russell, Hing,
Wood, Lubman Blacszczynski, 2015). In fact, despite its relatively new history, the industry has
significantly grown in the last few years, accounting for approximately 10% in the worldwide
gamblingindustry and been expected to steadily flourish in the foreseeable future (Global Betting
and Gaming Consultants, 2011). However, the rapid growth of interactive gambling outpacing the
laws and the complex nature of the Internet has given rise to a great number of concerns around the
negative aspects that it can bring to the economy and society (Gainsbury, 2012). A thorough and
critical understanding of these disadvantages is crucial, especially in a country, whereas people are
highly involved in gambling and increasingly participate in online gamblinglike Australia
(Gainsbury, 2012). Thus, this report aims to provide a comprehensive analysis into the
unfavourable aspects of online gambling in Australia and suggest solutions towards them. To

Dicore Case Study
1. External Analysis
In order to understand the environment of the mining industry and evaluate Dicore s competitors
and customers, this chapter will adopt some tools, such as PESTEL and Porter s five forces, to
analyze the external environment of Dicore International.
2.1. PESTEL Analysis
The PESTEL framework is often used to analyze the broad macro environment of an organization
(Johnson et al, 2014). Thus, it is used in this chapter to identify how the trend of drilling industry
can be affected by the political, economical, social, technological, ecological and legal factors.
2.2.1. Political Factors

Additionally, drilling sites are always located in inaccessible areas that cannot provide a
comfortable working condition. Therefore, it could contribute to a lower level of operational
productivity.
2.2.4. Technological Factors
The overall mining industry profits declining in 2013 came along with the declining of investment,
which may lead to a lack of funds in research and development in the mining industry, and slow
down the innovation process of drilling equipment to achieve faster and more accurate drilling.
Besides, better equipment can also address the issue raised by the bonus pay which often results in
damaging equipment or mineral.
2.2.5. Ecological Factors
The environmental regulations could impose the operating expenses of drilling, particularly in the
southwestern region. To be more specific, the drilling company has to take full responsibility to
reverse any damage that it may cause to the environment.
2.2.6. Legal Factors
More than one licence is required for a company to offer a full range of drilling services in
southwestern region. This may be a slow and complex process and may influence the company s
performance to some extent. Yet it is still much more stable than the rest of the factors that might
change the macro environment.

individuals; there will always be people in opposition to this practice. In America especially, it is
currently a very controversial topic. Those against involuntary commitment of the mentally
disordered argue that it is an extraordinary exercise of paternalism and the police power of the state
(Morse 58). More often than not, lawyers are the on the opposing side. This is because they are
aware of the actual laws regarding the subject. An argument that lawyers often present is that
involuntary commitment is a violation of personal rights. They argue that... Show more content on

Unlike most other mental health advocacy organizations in the world, MindFreedom is financially
independent from pharmaceutical companies, governments, religions, and mental health systems
(MindFreedom Fighting Back Against Human Rights Abuses in the Mental Health System 1). This
organization is comprised of those who have experienced involuntary psychiatric treatment; as well
as their family members and allies. The focus of this group is on human rights violations. Although
their arguments and objectives address involuntary commitment, they are not advocating for the
violent population. They believe that all people possess the same rights in regards to mental health
care, and that those rights include the ability to decline psychiatric treatment. However, their
website also states that There can be no doubt, to reiterate, that people in mental distress and crisis
can present challenges for those around them... (MindFreedom Fighting Back Against Human
Rights Abuses in the Mental Health System 3). The argument of this group is focused heavily on
the medication aspect of treatment. However, involuntary commitment can be performed without
forcing a patient to take medication. Often, medication is prescribed to help the patient, though it is
not a required aspect of treatment (Treatment Settings

In most cases, your hair is cut around shoulder length, either a little above, or slightly below. The
idea is to create a significant amount of depth to the appearance of your hair, something that the
hair stylist will do after the initial cut is made.
Popularity of Medium Length Layered Haircuts
One of the primary reasons that this type of haircut is so popular with women is because it s easy
to maintain. Women with long hairmay have to spend several hours washing their hair, drying it,
and getting it to a state of perfection. Although longer hair might provide a woman with more flair
and possibilities, long hair is more difficult to manage, and therefore medium length haircuts can
sometimes be preferable.
Women that cut their hair short might risk having a less feminine appearance. You need to have
the right facial shape in order to sport a shorter hairdo. The typical pixie cut that some women
prefer usually looks better with a more rounded face. However, in the end, it really comes down to
how much work you want to put into your hair. The medium length layered hairdo, therefore, is a
happy medium for those that want to have more style options, yet will have less hair to manage on

Non Satis Scire: To Know Is Not Enough
Elementary schools no longer require students to memorize multiplication tables. Learning how to
perform complex calculations using long division is passГ©. Many schools no longer teach
children cursive writing, and none teach, much less emphasize, the importance of good
penmanship. The advent of the age of technology is the cause...but is it to blame? Many people
might believe that by excluding some of the things that educators thought were important skills
fifty years ago, makes today s young adults ill educated. However, elementary students of the 1950

The amount of information that needed to be absorbed and applied in order to earn a doctorate in
1850 is nowhere near the volumes of information required to earn that same degree today.
Immediate access to information has started the idea of just in time learning (Collins and Halverson
14). This means that when one needs immediate information to accomplish a complex task, one can
receive the needed data at just the right time. Enthusiasts argue for just in time learning as the
counter to the school strategy of trying to teach everything one might need to know someday.
Many Americans spend 15 20 years in school learning things that they may or may not use later in
life. (Collins and Halverson 14) Not many Americans have ever required the date that Columbus
discovered America to enhance their lives. Since that kind of information is now available at the
touch of a button, why do educators still require children to memorize extraneous material? It
would be much more logical and efficient to teach children how to obtain that data, leaving more
space to memorize other more vital

Heathcliff Morally Ambiguous Character Analysis
A Morally Ambiguous Character A morally ambiguous character is a character who is conflicted
and uncertain in which course of action to ethically take during specific situations. In Emily
BrontГ« s Wuthering Heights, the character Heathcliff is the most morally ambiguous character in
the novel. Raised in in an environment where he was psychologically and physically deteriorated,
his motives and actions appear justifiable. His environment, motives, and actions showcase
Heathcliffs moral ambiguity. Mr. Earnshaw, the father figure at the Wuthering Heights
estates, upon
returning from a trip to Liverpool, has brought a young orphan boy in place of the gifts he
promised his children. Despite Mr. Earnshaw s kind heart, the family refuses to accept the boy.
Wuthering Height s maid, Ellen Nelly Dean, narrating the family s history to Lockwood, tells
him the family s first impressions and their treatment of the boy. She states, they entirely refused
to have it in bed with them, or even in their room; and I had no more sense, so I put it on the
landing of the stairs, hoping it might he gone on the morrow (BrontГ« 40). Both children are
upset at Heathcliff for have crushing the gifts their father has promised to bring back to them.
Neither let him room with them, resulting in Heathcliff sleeping on the floor outside of Mr.
Earnshaw s room for the first night of his arrival. Aside from being an orphan, this was
Heathcliff s first experience with rejection at Wuthering Heights. Not only did the children
dislike Heathcliff for have ruining their gifts, but the adults did not appreciate his arrival either.
Nelly claims she hopes it might be he gone on the morrow (BrontГ« 40). In addition to wishing
the boy would disappear, she refers to Heathcliff as not the pronoun he, but with the word it,
degrading him to a thing as opposed to a human being. Nelly then descripes Mrs. Earnshaw s
opinion on the boy, Mrs. Earnshaw was ready to fling it out of doors: she did fly up, asking how
he could fashion to bring that gipsy brat into the house, when they had their own bairns to feed
and fend for?, (BrontГ« 39). She is just as welcoming as the children and maid, Nelly, are. She
refers to him as a derogatory, gypsy boy,

a minor part of the book but it helped Harry do a lot of things, like win his quidditch matches. At
this time also, Sirius invites Harry to live with him since he is now a free man. Harry is excited to

The Steps Of The Empire State Building
I was too hurt to act rationally, and without saying anything, I left the Observatory and started
running down the steps of the Empire State Building. The more I thought about Lori sleeping with
some maggot, named Randy, the angrier I became and faster I ran down the steps.
Setting a new record for getting from the Observatory of the Empire State Building to the ground
floor without jumping, I stormed through the crowds and returned to the Port Authority. I arrived
there just in time to catch the 11:30 bus to Wilkes Barre.
The tension of a big city, awaiting the signal to party, was apparent as the Greyhound bus pulled
out of New York City. Before long, the bus passed through the Lincoln Tunnel and was speeding
through New Jersey. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I had grown more nervous since my encounter with Lori than I had ever been before in my life.
One night after supper, I just happened to notice a sculpture Lori gave me a few years earlier. It
was a copy of Rodin s sculpture, The Hand of God.
I took the sculpture from the shelf and began to study it. I was overcome by the beauty of the
large hand holding a jagged stone, on one side of which the figure of two lovers had been sculpted.
After I studied the sculpture and attempted to return it to its shelf, it slipped out of my hands and
fell to the floor, breaking into a number of pieces. Hearing the sculpture falling to the floor, my
father came into the parlor and asked me what happened.
Seeing the sculpture broken into a number of different pieces, I told him, I broke The Hand of God.
After I thought about what I just said, I realized my words could have been easily misinterpreted
as the idle boast of someone claiming to have inflicted harm on God, rather than a statement of fact
about the accidental fumbling of a sculpture. As I stared at the broken sculpture on the floor, I
began to wonder if there wasn t some strange symbolism in the event.
I began to think of Lori as a gift from God and my leaving her as a rejection of God s gift. For the
rest of the night, all I could think about was the broken sculpture.
When I finally realized it was futile trying to sleep, I went back into the parlor and attempted to
repair the sculpture. I was amazed

The Effects Of Drought And Its Effects On The Environment
Since we moved into the 21st century, the condition of global environment is one of the most
popular topics, and it created many controversies. Those topics are wide ranged, from the natural
disasters like earthquake, tornado or volcano eruption; to the man made disasters like nuclear war
or air / water / sound pollutions. As a student, I too am interested and have some concerns for the
planet that we are living in. Among the disasters, droughtis the one that I want to learn more about
it. So what is drought? Drought is described as a period of time when the water supply is
decreasing, and the length of the drought might occur in months or even years (basicplant). It
occurs in virtually all climatic zones and its characteristics may be different in certain regions.
According to The Ojos Negros Research Group, the characteristics of the drought are scarcity of
water, low precipitation, and mostly occurred in dry season . Other climatic factors like high wind
/temperature and low relative humidity (The Ojos Negros Research Group) are usually related
with the drought. Drought can be put into four categories based on the regions, needs, and
disciplinary approaches. The first type of drought is called Meteorological drought; it is defined on
the basis degree of dryness [compare to a normal/average amount], and the duration of the dry
period (National Drought Mitigation Center). Agricultural drought is the second type and it is
similar to the Meteorological drought, but

  • 2. Carson Silent Spring Analysis Carson s introduction to her Silent Spring portrays the utter destruction of the environment caused by us humans disdain towards nature through our constant use of pesticides; therefore, she urges her audience to recognize the significance of maintaining the health of our environment lest we want to live in her bleak description of our future Earth. Carson opens up with the juxtaposition of two worlds: one beautiful and untouched, and one deserted and barren. Her change in diction from positive to malign illustrates the contrast, going from words like prosperous and beauty to blight, death, and sickness. By showing the complete opposite sides of the spectrum, Carson exemplifies how ruinous the use of pesticides is on the environment, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Women s Pain Perception in Childbirth This is a study that focused on eighty three women and examined the effects of cultural and educational influences on the pain in childbirth. The eighty three women are divided into Middle Eastern women and Western women. The women ranged in ages from nineteen to thirty eight. There were thirty people from the Western group and that consisted of women whose mothers were born in Europe, the US or another English speaking country. There were fifty three women from the Middle Eastern Group and that consisted of women whose mothers were born in Asia, North African or another Middle Eastern countries. The women were classified by the cultures but were also classified by their level education. Those who had twelve years or less of schooling were in the low education group. Those women who had more than twelve years of schooling were in the high education group. In the Western group sixty six percent were in the high education group. While the Middle Eastern group only had thirty three point nine percent in the high education group. In order to perform this study they recorded their information they received from the procedure. The four measures were painperception, behavioral ratings, extroversion and the Miller Behavioral Style Scale. Pain perception is a scale ranged from zero to one hundred that is used to rate the labor pains. Behavioral ratings were used based on Meisles Iticksohn and was rated from zero to four. • 4. Review Of The Great White Man Getting back to the idea of how music plays an important role in this film, however, we must see how Schweitzer s authority is challenged. Schweitzer tries to drown out the African boy s drumming with his organ, but the drumming persists. The African boy, Higginson argues, is trying to invite Schweitzer to a musical dialogue. However, the Great White Man refuses to hear the drum s musical offering; yet, the drum responds to the rhythm of the keyboard. The part where the colonial powers influenced this boy is when Schweitzer gives this boy a trumpet to play instead of the drum as a Christmas present. On a more positive note, Higginson argues that on the day that Gabon achieves independence, the trumpet player frees himself from the Great... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lincoln in her article titled Consumption and Dependency in Mandabi , he needs he needs a birth certificate, three photographs and fifty cents. Another impact of colonialism is that cities like Dakar have no employment opportunities. Abdou has gone to Paris and picks up a working class job as a street sweeper. He has also gone to Paris in order to be educated in trade. He works all day and studies at night according to Lincoln. This is just one example of many in which Africans see Europe as a land that has much more opportunities. Even when Africans do live in European countries, they are not usually thriving so much, as evident by the fact that Abdou is working a modest, low paying job and he is not having a very nice time in Paris. Still, like many, he is willing to sacrifice his enjoyment for a while in order to have a better future. Senegal has also adopted a credit system that exists in the western world. According to Lincoln, Sembene argues that paying on credit can ruin a family financially, which is shown by the end of the film when Dieng s and his family lose even their house. ... • 5. How Can Resourcing and Development “Add Value” in the... According to Ann Marie E. McSwain, Assistant Professor at Lincoln University, leadership is about capacity: the capacity of leaders to listen and observe, to use their expertise as a starting point to encourage dialogue between all levels of decision making, to establish processes and transparency in decision making, to articulate their own value and visions clearly but not impose them. Leadership is about setting and not just reacting to agendas, identifying problems, and initiating change that makes for substantial improvement rather than managing change. In the modern workplace, a good leader can lead the team to success and vice versa. The importance of a good leader in an organization cannot be doubted. However, one of the most... It is usually called an AC or Mains. With the UK mains supply about 230Volts and has a frequency of 50Hz Hertz which mean it will change the direction, and back again 50 times a second. Alternating current is used in homes, transformers, and other places. Rectifier: Rectifier converts alternating current to direct current the process is known as rectification. The rectifier is an electronic circuit. Rectifier diode lets the electrical current flow in only one direction and is mainly used for power supply operations. They can handle higher current flow than regular ones. The one that is located on switch mode power supply is 800 V and 1 Amp. The diode 3 and 2 will act as open switches, diodes 1 and 4 will act as closed switches and will start conducting the energy coming flowing thru. Smoothing Capacitor: The smoothing capacitor job is to convert the half wave or full wave output of the rectifier into smooth DC. It is mostly used to remove ripple from the output of the direct current power supply. On the Switch mode power supply paper sheet we have identified that the smoothing ... However, Newman (2002) indicated that homeland security as a subset of national security. From my perspective, homeland security, falls within the purview of a larger capacity of national security. Both national securityand homeland security seeks to protect and defend the nation s interest. One of the goals of national security is to thwart our enemies agenda by preventing the enemies from threatening the United States, and its partners with weapons of mass destruction, whereas one of the goals of homeland security is to Protect the United States people, the critical infrastructure, and key resources (Caudle, 2009). • 11. Fear of Polio in the 1950s Essay examples Fear of Polio in the 1950s Paralytic poliomyelitis, polio , held a reign of terror over this nation for decades. But unless you were born before 1955, polio may seem to be just another ephemeral disease that has been nonexistent for years. Those born before 1955 remember having a great fear of this horrible disease which crippled thousands of once active, healthy children. This disease had no cure and no identified causes, which made it all the more terrifying. People did everything that they had done in the past to prevent the spread of disease, such as quarantining areas, but these tactics never seemed to work. Polio could not be contained. Many people did not have the money to care for a family member with polio. This was one of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In an attempt to control the disease, bewildered health officials reinstituted the usual rules of sanitation which they would later learn had worsened the threat of polio. They advised against open drains and unscreened windows. Parents were instructed to keep their children well bathed, well rested, well fed, and away from crowds. Bathing suits were locked away in closets, and nobody went to the public pools. When polio struck, movie theaters were shut, camps and schools were closed, drinking fountains were abandoned, draft inductions suspended, and nonessential meetings were canceled until the epidemic appeared to be over for the time being.[1] These precautions were harmless, but not particularly helpful. In the past, these precautions proved very effective in stopping the spread of diseases such as influenza and plague. For three decades now, people still did not know why they were getting their disease. And for three decades now, doctors, epidemiologists, and laboratory researchers were trying to figure out how the disease was spread.[2] Nobody has ever discovered completely how it is that polio is spread. The best evidence suggests that the virus is excreted in the stool and passed through hand to hand or hand to mouth contact by people who do not wash their hands properly or often enough. • 12. Social Motivation Of Social Ministry Introduction Many churches have moved beyond the atonement only gospel to become socially involved in their community in providing ministries such as, relief services, personal development services and community development services. This strategy, of social involvement by the church has been welcomed by many and has increased positive perception of the church and by extension amplified the impact of the church. But, what is the motivation behind these social involvements of the church. Is it something that they do in order to be more effective and relevant in sharing the gospel? Or is it something they do because it is genetically linked to their faith? In this paper, the writer will argue that in principle, social ministry should not be done as a means to make the church relevant. That is, the motivation behind church based social interventions should not be solely based on being relevant in order to be more effective in carrying out its mission, which is to make disciples. The writer proposes that social ministry ought to be a natural outworking of the church. As such, a church cannot be considered authentic if it is not involved in social ministry. Self benefit Motivation If the church is motivated to be socially involved because of the need to make the ministry of church relevant, in order to be more effective in carrying out its mission, then the focus is not on the need of the person or community but, rather it is on the church achieving its missional goal. • 13. Manet s Bar At The Folies Bergere Manet s Bar at the Folies BergГЁre, one of the most perplexing and mysterious paintings to exist, holds deep meaning and reflects French social life in this era. This work of art illustrates a Parisian nightclub, the Folies BergГЁre, which catered to a diverse set of acts including the circus and ballet. It is here that the Barmaid works and where we see the interaction between her and the gentleman. This is where an extremely important concept of the work appears perspective. Throughout the years there have been numerous interpretations and claims concerning why Manet painted the scene as he did, whether or not the perspective is accurate, and how all of the elements including the mirror and woman come together. Another fascinating element that comes from this scene is the social aspects of French life during this time. This element comes into play in the relationship between the barmaid and the gentleman in the top hat, the woman s expression, and the occupation of the woman. Although there are many enlightening interpretations of Manet s work, there is one that is particularly strong. Manet s use of perspective and inclusion of social matters both engages the viewer and leads them to ponder what it is exactly that they are viewing. A reason this painting has sparked so much interest and analysis is the mind boggling perspective and reflection. One of the first observations the viewer makes is that the barmaid and the barmaid s reflection do not go together. Pullman ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Capital Punishment Should Be Eliminated Throughout the history of humanity, punishments have been in place for the wrongful acts of citizens within governmental systems of all kinds. In America during the early days of the country, the death penalty was a more viable solution than it appears today due to the quality of the prisons, which couldn t sustain prisoners long term. (Von Drehle, 2015). Today, this is not an issue with prisons that are provided both by the state and federal governments and that are fully capable of holding offenders throughout the length of a life sentence (Von Drehle, 2015). However, many will argue that capital punishmentshould be eliminated. Foes of the death penalty are split into two groups with one that argues that capital punishment should and will cease based upon public support, that it doesn t deter crime, and the current processes of executions are too costly and problematic. The other will take a more humanitarian approach and claim that it is not the role of the government to decide the fate of an individual, and that crimes punishable by death are not justifiable. Determent, morals, severity of the crime, and revenge are among the many arguments that are geared in favor of protecting a centuries old government system. These groups give more pragmatic reasons as arguments. Currently, the United States is alone among other democracies by not being in similar standing as western European countries, such as Germany and France, where the death penalty has been completely ... This is a behavior that is extremely beneficial to me because I not only learn what I need to know, but I learn how manage time better and how to set my priorities better. Studying is something I need to modify because studying to me is something that is difficult to do, mainly because I feel it is like a chore more than anything else. My mindset on studying is my biggest issue and is the biggest reason studying is a behavior modification I need to increase. The most I want to study a day is at least two hours for at least two classes, so a total of four hours a day of studying. Most of the time when I study, I get sidetracked easily and end up using up time on something else rather than studying. The antecedent of this behavior may be the problem, because I am not putting myself in an environment where I can study the best or potentially learn the best. The consequence of that is that I end up not studying affectively enough for my classes and not doing as good as I would have liked to.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And when around 98% of a population is suffering to make a living, there is little hope for those in power. Taxes levied only on the common folk, crippling wars that left France with huge debts, and the careless spending of the upper classes ultimately lead to the start of the revolution. The main political cause was that the King had too much power but weak foreign policy leads to economic downturn. The main social cause was that French society was too imbalanced but it was truly economic exploitation of the lower class. The French Revolution had many probable causes, all linked together, but none as important and defining as the economic aspect. There were social and political causes to the French Revolution but both derived from economic cause. The imbalance of social classes was in part the root of the lower classes hatred towards the upper class. But it was because the lower class had no mobility in French Society that people started looking for change. Moving up in rank or position was nearly impossible and those with power, always had the power. This proved to be troublesome as one s hard work would not reap any benefits and would still have to pay heavy taxes to provide lavish lives for those in the upper class. • 26. Analysis of A P by John Updike A P (supermarket) is a short story written by the hardworking and highly productive John Updike and narrated in first person by a 19 year old protagonist and cashier named Sammy. It was published in 1961 and is about Sammy s change of character and coming of age. Updike uses the various shifts in tone, great attention to detail, and a great deal of symbolism to portray the significant change. The opening sentence In walks three girls in nothing but bathing suits (par.1) sets up the colloquial tone; it s as if Sammy was talking to a friend. As the story goes on, the tone shifts from being informal to a little comical. He refers to the people in the checkout lane as sheep and scared pigs in a chute. However, by the end the tone shifts yet again and becomes heroic. The act of quitting a job (climax) in defiance of Lengel s (manager and antagonist) unfair treatment of the girls is a strong indication of change in character. Sammy hoped the girls would notice his act of heroism. Ironically, the girls do not hear him. Instead, they head out forever disappearing from his life. Sammy s description of A P (setting) gives a dull and conventional illustration. On the contrary, the description of the girls was sharp and bright, characterizing him as a typical hormone driven teenager. He describes the first girl, Plaid (nickname), as a chunky kid, with a good tan dressed in a bright green plaid two piece bathing suit (par. 1). The second girl, Big Tall ... Summary Of Four Children For Sale By Roland Barthes Roland Barthes describes the punctum of a photograph as that accident which pricks me (but also bruises me, is poignant to me) (Barthes 27). The punctum of a photo is not meant to be the focus of the image. It is the detail that sparks interest. In the photograph 4 Children For Sale, credited to Bettmann Corbis, the punctum for me is the sign or maybe the facial expressionsof the children or the mother herself. I say for me because the punctum of a photo is not the same for every person. Every person sees an image differently. Different things will be more prominent to different people because the punctum is unique to the specific spectator. However, I do not know exactly which detail acts as the punctum. According to Barthes, What I can name cannot really prick me (51). The punctum does not necessarily have to be one detail though. If the punctum is what stings at you, what ultimately bothers you, the punctum can be made up of multiple pricks. Multiple subtle details that stop you and make you think of the photo in a new light. Overall, the punctum is what makes you question and what engages you to the photo. The sign is at least one of the sources of the punctum which can be described as what I add to the photograph and what is nonetheless already there (55). The focus of the photograph should be the children considering they are the ones being advertised and yet my attention is constantly drawn to the actual sign and not simply its message. Southwest A Success Story Of Organizational Change Southwest a Success Story in Organizational Change Why is it that when organizations announce upcoming changes to their employees they are rarely excited about it? You do not see them jovially discussing what is going to happen next, and/or how these changes are going to make their organization better. No, none of this is happening. Most of them are worried and wondering how these changes will affect them, and what their roles are going to be. This mindset makes organizational change difficult. Society in general just does not like change, nor are they comfortable with it. Therefore, when an organization can successfully implement change, people notice and researchers want to study them. They do this so they can formulate a change theory and teach it to other organizations that are experiencing the same situation(s). One company that has continually evolved, made changes, and has been successful at it is Southwest Airlines. How have Southwest Airlines been so successful, what was their core strategy, and what part has their differentiation strategy played in their success? Air Southwest was incorporated on March 15, 1967 (1966 to 1971, 2016), at a time when price competition from interstate competitors was ferocious (Heskett Sasser, 2013, p. 3). • 39. A Comprehensive Analysis Of Online Gambling Essay The cheap and accessible Internet combined with the growing confidence of consumers in online commerce has enabled the increasing popularity of interactive gambling which is defined as online and remote wagering and gaming through interactive media devices (Gainsbury, Russell, Hing, Wood, Lubman Blacszczynski, 2015). In fact, despite its relatively new history, the industry has significantly grown in the last few years, accounting for approximately 10% in the worldwide gamblingindustry and been expected to steadily flourish in the foreseeable future (Global Betting and Gaming Consultants, 2011). However, the rapid growth of interactive gambling outpacing the laws and the complex nature of the Internet has given rise to a great number of concerns around the negative aspects that it can bring to the economy and society (Gainsbury, 2012). A thorough and critical understanding of these disadvantages is crucial, especially in a country, whereas people are highly involved in gambling and increasingly participate in online gamblinglike Australia (Gainsbury, 2012). Thus, this report aims to provide a comprehensive analysis into the unfavourable aspects of online gambling in Australia and suggest solutions towards them. To achieve this, the report has three main objectives: 1.Provide a general and informative background about the online gambling in Australia 2.Analyse the negative impacts of online gambling on the economy and society 3.Discuss a set of recommendations to ... Besides, better equipment can also address the issue raised by the bonus pay which often results in damaging equipment or mineral. 2.2.5. Ecological Factors The environmental regulations could impose the operating expenses of drilling, particularly in the southwestern region. To be more specific, the drilling company has to take full responsibility to reverse any damage that it may cause to the environment. 2.2.6. Legal Factors More than one licence is required for a company to offer a full range of drilling services in southwestern region. This may be a slow and complex process and may influence the company s performance to some extent. Yet it is still much more stable than the rest of the factors that might change the macro environment.
