The Reforms Of Gaius Marius And The Aftereffects Of The...
The first century BC brought about a number of important changes for the Roman army. Most notably,
the reforms of Gaius Marius and the aftereffects of both the Social and Civil Wars altered the Roman
army as a whole. Bringing about both continuity and change, these events would help to shape the
nature, composition and character of the army of the Late Republic period and beyond. Change came
in the form of reforms brought about by Marius; the changing of the conscription of soldiers into the
Roman army would alter not only the formation of the army, but also its nature and character.
Furthermore, the granting of full citizenship to non Roman troops who fought for the Roman army
meant a blurring of a distinct Roman identity, or what it meant to be a Roman. However, despite these
aspects of change, continuity too came out of this period. The troops of the army post Marian reforms
developed strong patron client relationships with their generals that were not unlike the concept of the
paterfamilias that had existed since the beginnings of Rome. Furthermore, leadership of the army was
put into the hands of a select few, as it always had been, and these men would use the army as a means
to further their personal ambitions.
The largest of these changes to the Roman army were arguably the changes Gaius Marius made in the
conscription of soldiers. Conscription pre Marius took the form of the state issuing a property
requirement for soldiers who wished to join the army. These men

Dance Marathon
Last One Standing Various painters use their works of art as a representation of feelings. They include
symbols, figures, and expression to reveal their emotions through the form of art. Philip Evergood s
painting Dance Marathon illustrates the desperate times surrounding the Great Depression. In the
scene, dancers compete for a cash prize as they see who can dance the longest. He portrays the cruelty
of the time through this vulgar setting. The painting easily captures the viewer s attention mostly from
the use of color, figure, spatial effects, and other techniques created by the artist. The size of Dance
Marathon is not oversized, but it is relatively large and invites the spectator to look at the painting.
The perspective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Red appears to dominate the painting and serves as an eye catching color. The use of intensely
saturated colors draws the attention to the front couple. Additionally, the red color plays with the mind
of the onlooker without them thinking about it. It suggests deep passion, anger, and struggle. The artist
intends to relay his feelings about the event to the viewer. His outlook consists of disgust towards the
great depression that leaves many taken advantage of due to desperation.
The couple positioned in the front appears very large to make the painting 3 D. The relative size of the
dancers drastically shifts to create a window into the painting. The viewer can imagine being a part of
the event and watching the poverty stricken dancers. The angle that the painting is at appears to be
almost a bird s eye view. This adds to the effect of feeling as part of the audience. Spatial features are
also added with overlap making figures look even more distant. Almost everything can be seen all the
way to the back of the painting as the lighting in Dance Marathon spreads equally throughout the
painting. Many lamps hang from the ceiling to give it a sense of many sources of light and to
distribute the light evenly.
Dance Marathon as the title brings clear understanding to the artwork. Marathon means an event that
lasts longer than normal and requires great endurance. The audience recognizes that the people
struggle to move because

Highway Effectiveness And Regional Economic Growth
Applied Econometrics Professor Gary Rife Yongxin Shan 12/13/2016 Highway effectiveness and
regional economic growth Introduction The construction of transportation infrastructure to national
economic strength and efficiency is usually mentioned as a key to promoting development. We believe
that it provides a strong support for the both economics and social undertaking, so that it focuses on
where people live and where businesses locate. In other words, the decision of transportation
construction affect the land use patterns, the use of natural recourses, issues of urban sprawl, and the
overall life quality. Modern transportation is a comprehensive transportation system composed of five
modes of transportation, including highway, railway, waterway, aviation and pipeline. The road
transport is the most extensive and most popular one that has a leading role among all transportations,
especially the highway. Compare with the ordinary highway, the highway can increase the driving
speed by 50% and increase transport capacity 2 6 times. Also, it can reduce 1/3 car accident and
reduce 30% of fuel consumption. We can see that the development of the highway can effectively
promote the growth of the national economy, speed up the process of urbanization, improve people s
living quality. It plays an important role in the development of automobile and other related industries.
Also increase employment. In this case, the highway development has become a national traffic

Hip Hop Influence On American Culture
Hip hop music in today s world has grown immensely in the past 20 years, first spreading throughout
America and now to parts of Europe and Asia. However, this change was indeed a gradual one. What
began as a simple expression of dissatisfaction of inner city life has turned into a multimillion dollar
industry and thriving culture, with some of its leading artists being people of all walks of life. It began
around the 1970 s and 80 s as a means of overcoming the struggles of urban life in the Bronx, New
York City. More so than just music, Hip Hop is a culture with five elements or pillars all of which are
essential to what is the Hip Hop lifestyle . These five pillars are MCing (Rapping), DJing, Graffiti,
Breakdancing and Fashion. All of these cultural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These parties would consist of a DJ playing tracks that the MC would rap over and get the crowds

The spread of Hip Hop outside of the United States began in the mid 1980 s with groups like Public
Enemy and A Tribe Called Quest gaining significant popularity and thus touring overseas. This period
is known today as the Golden Age of Hip Hop. These acts would tour in parts of Europe and Asia and
bring the culture to other young people in urban areas of the world, and from there it would
hierarchically diffuse to more suburban neighborhoods. The first of which to truly adopt the culture
would be Latin America, with many of Hispanic descent also living in the same neighborhoods as
African Americans as well as the fact that those countries are located closest to the United States. In
the latter years however, Hip hop has begun to spread even faster with the dawn of the internet making

Essay about The Hindu Belief in Respect for All Living...
The Hindu Belief in Respect for All Living Creatures
In Hinduism, one of the fundamental beliefs is that all living creatures should be respected. This belief
comes from various principle and teachings within Hinduism.
Brahman is a very important concept in Hinduism and originates from the earliest scriptures. Priests of
the early Indian culture called the magical power of nature Brahman in their rituals with the brh root
meaning giving forth or growth and creation . Later on Brahman became known as the life giving
power of the universe. This power dwell in every corner of the universe and beyond as it is a

This is known as reincarnation. So if every thing in the universe, including living creatures, contains
an atman that has the essence of Brahman, Hindus should respect it. There are two stories that
represent this teaching from the Upanishads, which are Hindu scriptures:
A father tells his son to break a fig in half and asks the son what he sees. The son says that he sees
seeds and his father tells him to break one of them and tell him what he sees. The son says nothing.
The father says there is the subtle essence there although it cannot be seen and that the whole universe
is identified by that subtle essence.
The son then asks the father to teach him more. The father told him to place salt in a bowl of water
and come back to him in the morning, and it was done. Next day, the father told the son to find the salt
in the bowl but he couldn t because it had dissolved. The father then told the son to sip the water from
all sides and the son says that he can taste the salt from all areas. The father explains that it is in the
same way that you cannot see the subtle essence but it is there, identifying the whole universe.
Karma is the law of cause and effect and means action , so actions have consequences. This involves
the theory of reincarnation so selfish and evil actions will make the next life full of suffering whereas

Potatoes Are Graded In America Essay
From my research on how potatoes are graded in America, I have learned that the United States
Department of Agriculture (USDA) established and enforce the grading. The USDA has been
enforcing and updating the quality grading system for all foods since 1862. The last time the quality
grading system for potatoes was updated was in June of 2011. The system in place currently grades
potatoes on the following information: shape, firmness, appearance, size, color, and being free from:
soft rot, wet breakdown, blackheart, freezing, blight, scabs, rhizoctonia, and physical damage or
foreign matter. Although there are three grades for potatoes available for purchase due to the USDA s
grading scale, all potatoes sold in the US must fall into this scale. ... Show more content on

The grades of potatoes are U.S. No. 1, and U.S. Commercial, U.S. No. 2. All grades of potatoes are fit
for consumption, the only difference between them is how they appear, and if they are free of any of
the problems listed above. With that being said, there is a market for each of the different grades of
potatoes and different ways they can be used in the culinary field. The best potatoes available to be
purchased are the U.S. No. 1 grade, this is due to their top quality in the quality grading scale. These
potatoes are free of any imperfections and exceed in every aspect of the quality grading system. This
grade of potatoes is costs the most due to exceeding the grading system. Due to the set grade, these
potatoes can meet the required specification of even the strictest restaurant or individual, making them
the ideal choice of potatoes for quality. The U.S. Commercial grade potatoes, are similar to the U.S.
No. 1 potatoes, except they do not fully pass the necessary quality grading scale to be considered
ideal. This grade however, is used by both the average consumer and restaurants, as it this grade is less
expensive than the No. 1 grade. Commercial grade potatoes are the most commonly used potato in
restaurants across America, this is due to how inexpensive they are, for the quality they

Escalator
Design Statement:
Create an escalator system that uses significantly less energy than escalators currently in use.
Introduction:
Escalator Technology has not changed much over the past few decades. In fact, escalators have been
around for over one hundred years. In malls, train stations, and airports they are left on all day, and
waste energy. Energy efficient escalators already exist, however, in terms of cost and availability,
cheaper non energy efficient escalators are bought and used. Even when using new designs for
escalators, they can be made energy efficient and have a reduced cost. By using sensors, speed can be
reduced or even stopped when there are no passengers. Alternate forms of energy can be used, as well.
With new designs, however, the components sometimes are affected. When designing an escalator, the
choice of proper components must be made to ensure the completion of the design statement.
Therefore, to be able to design efficiently, one should understand the parts first. This paper addresses
the components of the escalator, and how they work to make it function.
Types of Components
In an escalator, the flat step, is an important component which allows passengers to stabilize
themselves. A flat step, is a step that is level with the preceding step. ... Show more content on

One design, for example, is the mat operated reversible design, in which the escalator only activates
automatically when a passenger boards the escalator. This design would require a pressure activated
switch to be built into the walkway or steps and should be able to control the motion of the escalator.
According to the mat design, photocells should be used as a secondary sensor to detect passengers. A
timing device would also have to built in. It should be able to shut down the escalator after a set
amount of time, following no detection of passengers(Zimmerman Deshpande,

The New Pitching Strategy From Napkin
Blog The New Pitching Strategy from Napkin to Mixpanel Like many people, I love whimsy, and the
notion that a multibillion startup idea could be scribbled on the back of a bar napkin has extraordinary
appeal. In fact, napkin ideas are part of the evolution of pitching startup companies. I find the napkin a
better starting point than cave drawings of the wheel or pictographs showing how to herd buffalo over
a cliff. From a practical standpoint, let s study the evolution of pitching tech ideas from the napkin to
the mixpanel. Pitches, like every other field of endeavor, are changing rapidly to reflect technology
and better communications. Toilet Tissue and Bar Napkins Whether it s toilet tissue, a placemat, bar
napkin or back of an envelope, great ideas don t succeed because of where they were first recorded but
because the ideas have merit. Pitching ideas has always been a challenge, no matter where they
originated, and pitches have changed substantially over the years. In the 19th century, hucksters and
literal snake oil salesmen often marketed their business ideas directly to clueless citizens who fell for a
variety of get rich quick schemes, magical cure alls and ownership stakes of fine engineering marvels
like the Brooklyn Bridge. As robber barons captured the industrial markets of the world, it became
increasingly important to know someone in business to pitch a new idea. The golden age of the deal

Memoirs of Princess Dashkova
The Memoirs of Princess Dashkova Analysis Eloquent, brilliant, unorthodox, poise, and loyal all of
these unique characteristics allowed Dashkova to gain the highest regard among the members of the
elite society and more importantly, to earn the respect of Catherine the Great. Dashkova is a peculiar
female character. She s fully narcissistic, but at the same time, rejects her recognition and claims
herself as unworthy of the credits Catherine II had given her. In her autobiography The Memoirs of

In Dashkova s memoir, she gave credits to her large role in the plot of overthrowing Peter III;
however, Catherine disagreed. She rebutted that it was her plan of action after the death of the
Empress Elizabeth and the vision of the coup was established long ago. My initial observation of
Dashkova is her ability to be extraordinary despite her difficult upbringing. Her intelligence was
compelling to the Empress Catherine and the men that she had encountered during her traveling.
Dashkova portrayed herself as a strong, versatile woman, who s not only different from most of the
women during the time period, but can also outperform her male counterparts in various tasks (e.g.
surgery, debate, carpenting, etc.) (pg. 144). She surprised the readers at the first moment when she met
Prince Dashkov, a Moscow man. She fell in love with him and got married at the age of 16. The
proposal was informal and emotional unlike the traditional arrangement with its strict regulations. Just
5 years after, Prince Dashkov passed away, leaving Dashkova 2 children and his mountainous
gambling debt. In the most hopeless scenario, Dashkova managed to raise her 2 children and provided
her son a wonderful education while still remaining faithful to the Empress Catherine II. She declared,

What Is The Impact Of The Russian Economy
Russia, officially recognized as the Russian Federation, is the largest country in the world, spanning
over 17 million square kilometers of the globe. It is the 9th most populous country in the world, with a
population of nearly 144 million people. Nearly 200 national and/or ethnic groups are represented in
Russia, but 77.7% of the population identifies as Russian. The Russia we know today originates in the
12th century when the Principality of Muscovy was founded, and it grew to become the third largest

Russia s recent recession was caused by a combination of falling oil prices, international sanctions,
and structural limitations. The Russian economy is heavily reliant on its natural resource deposits, and
in particular, it is reliant on oil. A significant portion of the oil and energy sector is nationalized, and
petroleum (crude, refined, and gas) accounts for 54% of Russia s exports. Russia s heavy reliance on
oil makes it vulnerable to terms of trade shocks, and thus, when oil prices plunged 77% from June
2014 to January 2016, Russia entered a recession. Falling oil prices were further compounded by the
imposition of economic sanctions. Beginning in 2014, the United States and its European allies
imposed sanctions against Russia for its aggressive activity in Ukraine and subsequent annexation of
Crimea. These sanctions, among other things, limit the financing of six of Russia s largest banks and
four energy companies, cut into Russia s ability to produce oil, and discouraged exports to Russia. In
part because of these sanctions and in part because of its entrenched Soviet structures and institutions,
Russia s economy remains relatively closed; its current account balance amounts to a positive 3.5% of
its GDP. The double shock of falling oil prices and international sanctions spurred Russia s 2014
recession, but the Russian economy is expected to recover as oil prices

Global Warming And Climate Change
Attribution of recent climate change is the effort to scientifically ascertain mechanisms responsible for
recent changes observed in the Earth s climate, commonly known as global warming . The effort has
focused on changes observed during the period of instrumental temperature record, when records are
most reliable; particularly in the last 50 years, when human activity has grown fastest and
observations of the troposphere have become available. The dominant mechanisms are anthropogenic,
i.e., the result of human activity. They are: increasing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases
global changes to land surface, such as deforestation increasing atmospheric concentrations of
aerosols.
There are also natural mechanisms for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Between the start of the Industrial Revolution in 1750, and the year 2005, the increase in the
atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide led to a positive radiative forcing, averaged over the
Earth s surface area, of about 1.66 watts per square metre .
Climate feedbacks can either amplify or dampen the response of the climate to a given forcing.
In the absence of forcings imposed on it, the climate system will still show internal variability . This
internal variability is a result of complex interactions between components of the climate system, such
as the coupling between the atmosphere and ocean . An example of internal variability is the El Niño
Southern Oscillation.
Detection vs. attribution
Detection and attribution of climate signals, as well as its common sense meaning, has a more precise
definition within the climate change literature, as expressed by the IPCC. Detection of a climate signal
does not always imply significant attribution. The IPCC s Fourth Assessment Report says it is
extremely likely that human activities have exerted a substantial net warming influence on climate
since 1750, where extremely likely indicates a probability greater than 95%. is absorbed and emitted
naturally as part of the carbon cycle, through animal and plant respiration, volcanic eruptions, and
ocean atmosphere exchange.

These nets are illegal but still used quite often. A drift net is towed behind the boat and captures
anything that swims or floats into it. This often results in by catch, which is the unintentional capture
of certain species, such as bottlenose dolphins (Dolphin p. 2). Another damaging technique used is
long line fishing. Hundreds...of baited hooks can hang on one line. Bait can be squid, fish... The lines
can be set with anchors or left drifting with the current for 12 to 24 hours (Long Line para. 1). These
long lines are harmful to many different animals. Birds are often found on the lines, having drowned
while trying to eat the bait. Loggerhead turtles, which are endangered, are found also. Sharks are the
most common casualty of long lining. (Long Line para. 2). These are just a few of the consequences of
common fishing techniques. This Reduced Catch plan should have the ability to strike a balance
between the environmentalists and fisherman. Commercial fisherman will be able to keep fishing but
will have to reduce the size of their catches. Surely, they will not agree with the reduction in their
catch size but they cannot argue the necessity of replenishing the fish populations. It is summed up
best by marine biologist Sylvia Earle: ...what is not realized is that when the fish have gone, the way
of life will come to an end anyway. What s happening is not sustainable (National para. 9). In the long

Paper On Anglo Saxons
So there was a big group of people who settled in Great Britain in the 5th century and that group was
called the Anglo Saxons . The Anglo Saxons negotiated with people that were from the Germanic
tribes. These people also made a trip to the island from continental Europe. They had descendants, and
homegrown British groups who accepted some aspects of the Anglo Saxon way and also the language
that they had (Anglo Saxon 1). In my opinion the Anglo s were kind of vulgar and uncivil towards the
Britain s because they did invade them and even went as far as taking over what was theirs like their
land. Anglo Saxons as you can see had some conflict with Great Britain. I m also sure that Great

Like todays time firearms have different grips and features. Firearms are still being made differently
today to please people who like different features. The different features are what make each firearm
so unique; also the different features can make the firearm shoot differently. For example, some
firearms may have a kick to them while some may not. Also some firearms can shoot and hit a target
that is further away than others.
Since the beginning of time for firearms they have been used in ways that they should not be. People
try to blame firearms for actions or tragedy s that take place in the world. Firearms are not to blame
for actions that take; whoever is pulling the trigger to the firearm is to blame for the action that has
taken place. America needs to take time to really reflect on the way a firearm can save a life just as
quick as it could take a life. It would be great if there were a rule that anyone who owned a firearm
would have to take a firearm safety course. Firearm safety is not practiced enough in America and
many are unaware of how quick an accident could take place. There are times when things happen that
shouldn t because of careless mistakes with firearms. One example while carrying a firearm in any
circumstance would be firearms should be unloaded when not in use (firearm). The reasoning behind
this is to simply keep everyone including yourself safe while carrying a firearm.

Benefits Of The Cobra Coverage

your coinsurance or out of pocket for the year you would not have to pay additional money out of your

extravagant parties. He never was in his own swimming pool, never cracked a book in his library.
Gatsby is so disconnected from his surroundings that he seems to be just another guest in his own
house. When Gatsby shows up at Nick s house one evening, Nick points to Gatsby s blazing mansion,
with all of its rooms illuminated, and remarks that it looks like the World s Fair.
Does it? He turned his eyes toward it absently.
I have been glancing into some of the rooms.
Let s go to Coney Island, old sport, In my car.
It s too late.
Well, suppose we take a plunge in the swimming pool?
I haven t made use of it all summer.
A few days later, when Gatsby realizes his five year dream of showing Daisy around his extraordinary
home, everything seems to be as new and unfamiliar to him as it does to his guests:
Sometimes, too, he stared around at his possessions in a dazed

Assignment On Social Identity Theory Essay
TATA INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES MUMBAI GROUP WORK ASSIGNMENT ON
SOCIAL IDENTITY THEORY Submitted to: Professor Vijay Raman Enrollment No.: M2015CF026
SOCIAL IDENTITY THEORY The Social Identity Theory was developed by Tajfel and Turner in
1979. The theory was originally developed to understand the psychological basis of intergroup
discrimination. Tajfel in 1971 attempted to identify the minimal conditions that would lead members
of one group to discriminate in favour of the in group to which they belonged and against another out
group. In simple words Social identity is a person s sense of who they are based on their group
membership. Later in 1979 Tajfel proposed that the groups (e.g. social class, family, company etc.)
which people belonged to were an important source of pride and self esteem. Groups give us a sense
of social identity: a sense of belonging to the social world. In order to increase our self image we
enhance the status of the group to which we belong. For example, TISS is a top ranked university in
India. We can also increase our self image by discriminating and holding prejudice views against the
out group (the group we don t belong to). For example, the other slightly lower ranked institutes.
Therefore we have divided students into them and us based through a process of social categorization.
This is known as in group (us) and out group (them). Social identity theory states that the in group will
discriminate against the out group to

Pseudomonas Research Papers
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for severe gram negative infections
in several body systems. While it rarely infects healthy individuals, this microorganism is responsible
for acute and chronic diseases in patients with compromised immune systems.1 3 Acute diseases
involve pneumonia,4 while chronic infections include cystic fibrosis,5,6 which are complicated and
can often be life threatening. Numerous factors enabling infections to occur, such as the biotoxins
released by this bacterium, are documented.7 9 However, little is known about which signals cause
Pseudomonas aeruginosa to acquire a pathogenic character. Monitoring the production of these signals
could provide further understanding about the opportunistic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Additionally, thin layer chromatography (TLC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)
are frequently employed approaches for detecting PYO.23,24 Although these chromatographic
methods generally yield good detection sensitivities, they require complex operation procedures and
expensive equipment. Unlike these conventional procedures, electrochemical approaches have
demonstrated to be low cost, rapid, sensitive and direct detection methods for pyocyanin, thus being
an increasingly popular alternative to the standard detection methods.7,25 27 Several studies have
successfully used various voltammetric techniques for the detection and quantification of pyocyanin
from Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains and from human fluid samples.3,7,25,26 Additionally, a recent
study reported an amperometric method for the selective detection and quantification of pyocyanin.28
Lastly, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) has been employed to examine pyocyanin at the
surface of biofilms in a spatially resolved fashion.29,30 However, none of the aforementioned
electrochemical techniques have demonstrated the use of an array based ultramicroelectrode (UMEs)

Knowledge In Society In the stories Harrison Bergeron and By the Waters of Babylon both present a
similar plot about society in the future. Both main characters, John and Harrison, question the beliefs
and knowledge in their society. For example, Harrison does not agree with the system of everyone
being equal; and John s journey to the Place of Gods lets him gain the knowledge and truth about
these places and people to help the people in his society understand. In the story, Harrison Bergeron,
one learns that the author, Kurt Vonnegut, does not like the way society is. He does not like how
people judge one another because one is not as attractive, or smarter, or funnier. He ... Show more

or a son of a priest and to search for metal, cross the river and look at the place that was once the Place

forbidden, I said, but it was my voice that spoke but not my spirit, (Benet, p. 292). My heart was
troubled about going east, yet I knew that I must go. (Benet, p. 293). John knows going to these places
is a sin, but for some reason he seems to knot agree with this. As the story progresses, John is now a
man and goes off into his journey. He searches for signs; his first sign was an eagle that went east.
John knows it is a sin to go east, but his gut is telling him he should go. However, he believes this was
a bad spirit trying to convince him to the wrong thing. His next sign were three deers, as well as a
white fawn, another sin. Then he sees a black panther which attacks the white fawn. This represents a

How Does Race Influence The Politics Of The 1960s
Jacob Garbison Professor Sean Trundle History 355 4 December 2014 Dog Whistle Politics of the
1960s On July 2, after signing the 1964 Civil Rights Act, President Lyndon B. Johnson reportedly said
to his staff, I think we just gave the South to the Republicans for your lifetime and mine. (Perlstein
365) He was wrong. Although he never lived to see it, Jimmy Carter won a Democratic South in 1976
but it was for the last time. Nonetheless, the party which had dominated the South for almost a century
had put it up for grabs with the stroke of a pen. The impact of racism on presidential politics during
the 60s is difficult to overstate. Race and racially coded language in particular played a profound role

Here, Wallace did something new. Gone were the overt references to white supremacy, segregation, or
even race. Instead, he positioned himself as a defender of the constitution against tyrannical
government overreach: I stand here today, as Governor of this sovereign State, and refuse to willingly
submit to illegal usurpation of power by the Central Government. [1] Wallace went on, giving voice to
the politics of the South in language that was palpable, even agreeable, to the North. The dramatic
Stand in the Door was all for show of course. Wallace stood aside, allowing three black students to
register for classes later that day, but the effects of the speech would have wide repercussions. Wallace
received nearly 100,000 telegrams in response to his speech from all across the country, an almost
unheard of number for a lowly Southern governor. More shocking still was that nearly all of them,
about 95%, were praising his bravery. (Lopez, 15) They all hate black people, all of them. Wallace
reportedly exclaimed, They re all afraid, all of them Great God! That s it! They re all Southern. The
whole US is Southern! (Lopez, 15) Wallace had discovered the dog whistle, a way to communicate
racial animosity without using explicit racism. This is a distinctly modern expression of racism which,
as Ian Haney Lopez says, [stimulates] the intended audience without overtly

Specific Gravity Research Paper
!!!What Is Specific Gravity? When we go out in the summer to enjoy the pools and the rivers, we
always have to make sure that all our equipment and safety measures are working and in place. When
we go to the river and get on our boats, we make sure the boat has no leaks and we have our safety
vest on. For young children who are still learning how to swim, we make sure they have their floaters
on or we swim with them in a swim ring to make sure they do not sink. Why is it that boats, and swim
rings float, as shown in the picture below? There are many factors that determine if an object will sink
or float in water, and one of these factors is what we call the specific gravity. [{Image src=

Solution: [{Image src= example3specificgravity.png alt= Example 3 Solution }] !!!Lesson Summary
The specific gravity of an object is the ratio between the density of an object to a reference object, in
our case, our reference object is water with a density of 1 g/mL or 1 g/cm^3. Because the density is
directly related to the mass, the specific gravity can also be determined from the ratios of the mass of
the object to the mass of water, or the weight of the object to the weight of water. The specific gravity
has no units and its value determines if the object will float or sink in water. If the specific gravity has
a value of greater than 1 , then the object sinks in water and if it is less than 1 , then the object floats in
water . The specific gravity is a very important factor in different industries. For instance, it helps ship
builders and boat builders in determining the best materials to build their vessels. It is also very
important in the jewelry business in determining if the stones and minerals are genuine. It is also
important in the environmental aspect when determining if there are oil spills or in identifying
unknown artifacts in

How Did Florence Contribute To The Renaissance
Italian city states were small independent cities between the 9th and 15th century that gradually grew
overtime. Important cities such as Florence, Genoa and Venice contributed to the Renaissance.
However, Florence was one of the most significant of them all. During this period, money from
wealthy groups such as the Medici family, was used to support famous artists who made this city
important as it is. It was to be said that Florence was the birthplace of the Renaissance, in other words
the start of a whole new dimension full of new ideas.
Leadership played an important role to help Florence gain importance. During the 15th to 18th
century, the Medici family was a major influence to Florence even though they were an uncrowned
monarch. The

the right ambiance. Choose one of the great ideas below for your graduation table decorations.

At each table, you can set up a chalkboard easel. You can purchase mini chalkboard easels at your
local craft store.
In order to make the chalkboard easels more festive, you can attach a mini diploma to each easel. All
you need to do is purchase a roll of parchment paper. Take the parchment paper and roll it up. Tie the

In order to stay with the graduation theme, purchase scrapbook paper in the school colors of your
graduate. If your graduate s school colors are darker, you can purchase cream colored paper to write
on. Take the cards and cut them out into card like shapes; if you have craft scissors that cut in fun
patterns, this is a great time to use them. If your graduate s colors are too dark to write on, cut out a
slightly smaller square and glue the lighter colored paper in the middle.
Once you have the cards assembled, use your most colorful pens and best handwriting to fill each card
up with one thing that your graduate has accomplished over the past four years. When you have filled
up all the cards, stick them on the photo holders and place them on the tables.
In order to make your table decorations a little more interactive, you can leave blank cards as well as
pens each table for guests to write down either an accomplishment they remember that your graduate
has achieved or a memory that they have with your graduate.
In order to make your table decorations for your graduation party both fun and interactive, choose one
of the two ideas listed above, or use both ideas at your party. The key is to keep the focus on the
person who you are celebrating, and make sure that the event is fun for

Analysis Of Of Mice And Men
In both of the novels, prejudice, in all its forms, is a key theme throughout; especially in the relation to
the destruction of the innocent. In Lee s To Kill A Mockingbird, the innocent characters (or
mockingbirds ) are generally characters who are misunderstood by the harsh society in 1930s
America. This ranges from a lack of understanding or knowledge about mental illness in the case of
Boo Radley, to pure racism in the case of Tom Robinson. In Of Mice And Men, there is a bigger focus
on sexism, but again the lack of understanding towards people with mental illnesses is repeated, this
time, in the case of Lennie. These themes of prejudice set up both novels from the very beginning and
run throughout until the inevitable destruction of all who are discriminated against.
Both novels open in a natural, almost idealistic environment. To Kill A Mockingbird is begun in the
town of Maycomb, where the citizens are described as being in no hurry, for there was nowhere to go,
nothing to buy, and no money to buy it with. This would have been typical of the time the novel is set
in, as during the great depression there was indeed, no money. The fact that the people are in no hurry
could imply that they have nothing interesting going on, so no reason to hurry in any way, which
could, in turn, become foreshadowing, as though later in the novel they may have a reason to. This
could then represent them as being innocent, as they seem to be naive as to their surroundings and

Disadvantages And Disadvantages Of Deep Water Running
Introduction
This technical report will analyse existing evaluations of deep water running whilst also exploring the
advantages and disadvantages of deep water running.
Deep Water Running or Aqua Running is the replication of a running style where the subject is
submerged up to the neck in water and is unable to touch the ground (Masumoto et al 2017). It is used
by elite athletes in a variety of situations: as a rehabilitation technique, allowing the athlete to maintain
their cardiovascular fitness whilst injured, as a form of active recovery, increasing heart rate helping to
increase blood flow to muscles, and also in addition to a regular training programme, allowing more
cardiovascular training without excess strain on joints and muscles from the impact forces of running.
A flotation belt is normally used to carry out deep water training in order to copy the style used by the
runner on land (Kilgore).
The use of deep water running is advantageous to an athlete, less pressure is placed upon their joints
and spine allowing them to increase training volume without increasing the risk of injury. Meanwhile
the recovery process from the athletes major training sessions can also be sped up by deep water
running allowing the athlete to train under less fatigue in future sessions.
Deep water running can however provide some disadvantages to an athlete who uses it. To achieve the
same benefits from a training session they must work at a greater perceived effort. The use of deep

  • 2. The Reforms Of Gaius Marius And The Aftereffects Of The... The first century BC brought about a number of important changes for the Roman army. Most notably, the reforms of Gaius Marius and the aftereffects of both the Social and Civil Wars altered the Roman army as a whole. Bringing about both continuity and change, these events would help to shape the nature, composition and character of the army of the Late Republic period and beyond. Change came in the form of reforms brought about by Marius; the changing of the conscription of soldiers into the Roman army would alter not only the formation of the army, but also its nature and character. Furthermore, the granting of full citizenship to non Roman troops who fought for the Roman army meant a blurring of a distinct Roman identity, or what it meant to be a Roman. However, despite these aspects of change, continuity too came out of this period. The troops of the army post Marian reforms developed strong patron client relationships with their generals that were not unlike the concept of the paterfamilias that had existed since the beginnings of Rome. Furthermore, leadership of the army was put into the hands of a select few, as it always had been, and these men would use the army as a means to further their personal ambitions. The largest of these changes to the Roman army were arguably the changes Gaius Marius made in the conscription of soldiers. Conscription pre Marius took the form of the state issuing a property requirement for soldiers who wished to join the army. These men ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Dance Marathon Last One Standing Various painters use their works of art as a representation of feelings. They include symbols, figures, and expression to reveal their emotions through the form of art. Philip Evergood s painting Dance Marathon illustrates the desperate times surrounding the Great Depression. In the scene, dancers compete for a cash prize as they see who can dance the longest. He portrays the cruelty of the time through this vulgar setting. The painting easily captures the viewer s attention mostly from the use of color, figure, spatial effects, and other techniques created by the artist. The size of Dance Marathon is not oversized, but it is relatively large and invites the spectator to look at the painting. The perspective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Red appears to dominate the painting and serves as an eye catching color. The use of intensely saturated colors draws the attention to the front couple. Additionally, the red color plays with the mind of the onlooker without them thinking about it. It suggests deep passion, anger, and struggle. The artist intends to relay his feelings about the event to the viewer. His outlook consists of disgust towards the great depression that leaves many taken advantage of due to desperation. The couple positioned in the front appears very large to make the painting 3 D. The relative size of the dancers drastically shifts to create a window into the painting. The viewer can imagine being a part of the event and watching the poverty stricken dancers. The angle that the painting is at appears to be almost a bird s eye view. This adds to the effect of feeling as part of the audience. Spatial features are also added with overlap making figures look even more distant. Almost everything can be seen all the way to the back of the painting as the lighting in Dance Marathon spreads equally throughout the painting. Many lamps hang from the ceiling to give it a sense of many sources of light and to distribute the light evenly. Dance Marathon as the title brings clear understanding to the artwork. The Hindu Belief in Respect for All Living Creatures In Hinduism, one of the fundamental beliefs is that all living creatures should be respected. This belief comes from various principle and teachings within Hinduism. Brahman is a very important concept in Hinduism and originates from the earliest scriptures. Priests of the early Indian culture called the magical power of nature Brahman in their rituals with the brh root meaning giving forth or growth and creation . This is known as reincarnation. So if every thing in the universe, including living creatures, contains an atman that has the essence of Brahman, Hindus should respect it. There are two stories that represent this teaching from the Upanishads, which are Hindu scriptures: A father tells his son to break a fig in half and asks the son what he sees. The son says that he sees seeds and his father tells him to break one of them and tell him what he sees. The son says nothing. The father says there is the subtle essence there although it cannot be seen and that the whole universe is identified by that subtle essence. The son then asks the father to teach him more. The father told him to place salt in a bowl of water and come back to him in the morning, and it was done. Next day, the father told the son to find the salt in the bowl but he couldn t because it had dissolved. The father then told the son to sip the water from all sides and the son says that he can taste the salt from all areas. • 9. Potatoes Are Graded In America Essay From my research on how potatoes are graded in America, I have learned that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) established and enforce the grading. The USDA has been enforcing and updating the quality grading system for all foods since 1862. The last time the quality grading system for potatoes was updated was in June of 2011. The system in place currently grades potatoes on the following information: shape, firmness, appearance, size, color, and being free from: soft rot, wet breakdown, blackheart, freezing, blight, scabs, rhizoctonia, and physical damage or foreign matter. With that being said, there is a market for each of the different grades of potatoes and different ways they can be used in the culinary field. The best potatoes available to be purchased are the U.S. No. 1 grade, this is due to their top quality in the quality grading scale. • 10. Escalator Design Statement: Create an escalator system that uses significantly less energy than escalators currently in use. Introduction: Escalator Technology has not changed much over the past few decades. In fact, escalators have been around for over one hundred years. In malls, train stations, and airports they are left on all day, and waste energy. Energy efficient escalators already exist, however, in terms of cost and availability, cheaper non energy efficient escalators are bought and used. Even when using new designs for escalators, they can be made energy efficient and have a reduced cost. By using sensors, speed can be reduced or even stopped when there are no passengers. Alternate forms of energy can be used, as well. With new designs, however, the components sometimes are affected. When designing an escalator, the choice of proper components must be made to ensure the completion of the design statement. Therefore, to be able to design efficiently, one should understand the parts first. This paper addresses the components of the escalator, and how they work to make it function. The New Pitching Strategy From Napkin Blog The New Pitching Strategy from Napkin to Mixpanel Like many people, I love whimsy, and the notion that a multibillion startup idea could be scribbled on the back of a bar napkin has extraordinary appeal. In fact, napkin ideas are part of the evolution of pitching startup companies. I find the napkin a better starting point than cave drawings of the wheel or pictographs showing how to herd buffalo over a cliff. From a practical standpoint, let s study the evolution of pitching tech ideas from the napkin to the mixpanel. Pitches, like every other field of endeavor, are changing rapidly to reflect technology and better communications. In the 19th century, hucksters and literal snake oil salesmen often marketed their business ideas directly to clueless citizens who fell for a variety of get rich quick schemes, magical cure alls and ownership stakes of fine engineering marvels like the Brooklyn Bridge. Dashkova is a peculiar female character. She s fully narcissistic, but at the same time, rejects her recognition and claims herself as unworthy of the credits Catherine II had given her. In her autobiography The Memoirs of Princess Dashkova, Dashkova justifies her role as a noble woman, her early life contribution in helping Catherine rise to the throne, and the frugal life she bore as a widow and a mother of two. In Dashkova s memoir, she gave credits to her large role in the plot of overthrowing Peter III; however, Catherine disagreed. She rebutted that it was her plan of action after the death of the Empress Elizabeth and the vision of the coup was established long ago. My initial observation of Dashkova is her ability to be extraordinary despite her difficult upbringing. Her intelligence was compelling to the Empress Catherine and the men that she had encountered during her traveling. Dashkova portrayed herself as a strong, versatile woman, who s not only different from most of the women during the time period, but can also outperform her male counterparts in various tasks (e.g. surgery, debate, carpenting, etc.) (pg. 144). She surprised the readers at the first moment when she met Prince Dashkov, a Moscow man. She fell in love with him and got married at the age of 16. The proposal was informal and emotional unlike the traditional arrangement with its strict regulations. Just 5 years after, Prince Dashkov passed away, leaving Dashkova 2 children and his mountainous gambling debt. In the most hopeless scenario, Dashkova managed to raise her 2 children and provided her son a wonderful education while still remaining faithful to the Empress Catherine II. She declared, My own poverty affected me not at all (pg. 149). Ironically, as a member of the aristocratic class, she wore nothing but the oldest clothes (pg. 64). According to Dashkova s ... Nearly 200 national and/or ethnic groups are represented in Russia, but 77.7% of the population identifies as Russian. Russia s recent recession was caused by a combination of falling oil prices, international sanctions, and structural limitations. The Russian economy is heavily reliant on its natural resource deposits, and in particular, it is reliant on oil. A significant portion of the oil and energy sector is nationalized, and petroleum (crude, refined, and gas) accounts for 54% of Russia s exports. Russia s heavy reliance on oil makes it vulnerable to terms of trade shocks, and thus, when oil prices plunged 77% from June 2014 to January 2016, Russia entered a recession. Falling oil prices were further compounded by the imposition of economic sanctions. Beginning in 2014, the United States and its European allies imposed sanctions against Russia for its aggressive activity in Ukraine and subsequent annexation of Crimea. These sanctions, among other things, limit the financing of six of Russia s largest banks and four energy companies, cut into Russia s ability to produce oil, and discouraged exports to Russia. In part because of these sanctions and in part because of its entrenched Soviet structures and institutions, Russia s economy remains relatively closed; its current account balance amounts to a positive 3.5% of its GDP. The double shock of falling oil prices and international sanctions spurred Russia s 2014 recession, but the Russian economy is expected to recover as oil prices ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Global Warming And Climate Change Attribution of recent climate change is the effort to scientifically ascertain mechanisms responsible for recent changes observed in the Earth s climate, commonly known as global warming . The effort has focused on changes observed during the period of instrumental temperature record, when records are most reliable; particularly in the last 50 years, when human activity has grown fastest and observations of the troposphere have become available. The dominant mechanisms are anthropogenic, i.e., the result of human activity. Between the start of the Industrial Revolution in 1750, and the year 2005, the increase in the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide led to a positive radiative forcing, averaged over the Earth s surface area, of about 1.66 watts per square metre . Climate feedbacks can either amplify or dampen the response of the climate to a given forcing. In the absence of forcings imposed on it, the climate system will still show internal variability . This internal variability is a result of complex interactions between components of the climate system, such as the coupling between the atmosphere and ocean . An example of internal variability is the El Niño Southern Oscillation. Detection vs. attribution Detection and attribution of climate signals, as well as its common sense meaning, has a more precise definition within the climate change literature, as expressed by the IPCC. Detection of a climate signal does not always imply significant attribution. The IPCC s Fourth Assessment Report says it is extremely likely that human activities have exerted a substantial net warming influence on climate since 1750, where extremely likely indicates a probability greater than 95%. is absorbed and emitted naturally as part of the carbon cycle, through animal and plant respiration, volcanic eruptions, and ocean atmosphere exchange. Hundreds...of baited hooks can hang on one line. Bait can be squid, fish... The lines can be set with anchors or left drifting with the current for 12 to 24 hours (Long Line para. 1). Sharks are the most common casualty of long lining. (Long Line para. 2). These are just a few of the consequences of common fishing techniques. This Reduced Catch plan should have the ability to strike a balance between the environmentalists and fisherman. Assignment On Social Identity Theory Essay TATA INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES MUMBAI GROUP WORK ASSIGNMENT ON SOCIAL IDENTITY THEORY Submitted to: Professor Vijay Raman Enrollment No.: M2015CF026 SOCIAL IDENTITY THEORY The Social Identity Theory was developed by Tajfel and Turner in 1979. The theory was originally developed to understand the psychological basis of intergroup discrimination. Tajfel in 1971 attempted to identify the minimal conditions that would lead members of one group to discriminate in favour of the in group to which they belonged and against another out group. In simple words Social identity is a person s sense of who they are based on their group membership. Later in 1979 Tajfel proposed that the groups (e.g. social class, family, company etc.) which people belonged to were an important source of pride and self esteem. Groups give us a sense of social identity: a sense of belonging to the social world. In order to increase our self image we enhance the status of the group to which we belong. For example, TISS is a top ranked university in India. We can also increase our self image by discriminating and holding prejudice views against the out group (the group we don t belong to). For example, the other slightly lower ranked institutes. Therefore we have divided students into them and us based through a process of social categorization. This is known as in group (us) and out group (them). Social identity theory states that the in group will discriminate against the out group to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Because the density is directly related to the mass, the specific gravity can also be determined from the ratios of the mass of the object to the mass of water, or the weight of the object to the weight of water. The specific gravity has no units and its value determines if the object will float or sink in water. If the specific gravity has a value of greater than 1 , then the object sinks in water and if it is less than 1 , then the object floats in water . The specific gravity is a very important factor in different industries. For instance, it helps ship builders and boat builders in determining the best materials to build their vessels. It is also very important in the jewelry business in determining if the stones and minerals are genuine. • 31. Analysis Of Of Mice And Men In both of the novels, prejudice, in all its forms, is a key theme throughout; especially in the relation to the destruction of the innocent. In Lee s To Kill A Mockingbird, the innocent characters (or mockingbirds ) are generally characters who are misunderstood by the harsh society in 1930s America. This ranges from a lack of understanding or knowledge about mental illness in the case of Boo Radley, to pure racism in the case of Tom Robinson. In Of Mice And Men, there is a bigger focus on sexism, but again the lack of understanding towards people with mental illnesses is repeated, this time, in the case of Lennie. These themes of prejudice set up both novels from the very beginning and run throughout until the inevitable destruction of all who are discriminated against. Both novels open in a natural, almost idealistic environment. To Kill A Mockingbird is begun in the town of Maycomb, where the citizens are described as being in no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy, and no money to buy it with. This would have been typical of the time the novel is set in, as during the great depression there was indeed, no money. The fact that the people are in no hurry could imply that they have nothing interesting going on, so no reason to hurry in any way, which could, in turn, become foreshadowing, as though later in the novel they may have a reason to. This could then represent them as being innocent, as they seem to be naive as to their surroundings and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Disadvantages And Disadvantages Of Deep Water Running Introduction This technical report will analyse existing evaluations of deep water running whilst also exploring the advantages and disadvantages of deep water running. Deep Water Running or Aqua Running is the replication of a running style where the subject is submerged up to the neck in water and is unable to touch the ground (Masumoto et al 2017). It is used by elite athletes in a variety of situations: as a rehabilitation technique, allowing the athlete to maintain their cardiovascular fitness whilst injured, as a form of active recovery, increasing heart rate helping to increase blood flow to muscles, and also in addition to a regular training programme, allowing more cardiovascular training without excess strain on joints and muscles from the impact forces of running. A flotation belt is normally used to carry out deep water training in order to copy the style used by the runner on land (Kilgore). The use of deep water running is advantageous to an athlete, less pressure is placed upon their joints and spine allowing them to increase training volume without increasing the risk of injury. Meanwhile the recovery process from the athletes major training sessions can also be sped up by deep water running allowing the athlete to train under less fatigue in future sessions. Deep water running can however provide some disadvantages to an athlete who uses it. To achieve the same benefits from a training session they must work at a greater perceived effort.
