Essay On How Did The Roman Empire Divide
An Empire Divided When the massive civil conflict finally ended in 284. It was decided the
empire was too strained and large to be governed by one man in one city. It limited military
power. And created pockets where ambitious generals could become usurpers. No one wanted
another Crisis. The empire was split in two. The Western and Eastern Roman Empires, The West
contained Rome, and the provinces west of the Greek peninsula. The East, often called the
Byzantine Empire due to the name of its capital, with everything to the east. While this helped the
governing process of Rome it did lead to the downfall of the Western Empire. When the East split
away, Western Rome lost a significant part of its territory that generated money for the empire.
Most of Western Rome was agricultural with the exception of North Africa and western Hispania.
Both of which would later be taken over by the Vandals. Western Rome could not sustain itself
without the support of the Eastern Empire. Religious Tensions Both during the third century crisis
and after the split of the empire there were widespread persecutions of minority... Show more

Only attacking to regain lost territory. This was a good thing for the Roman military. But, it did
cripple the workhorse of the Roman economy. Slaves. Once the expansion ended, Rome stopped
receiving fresh slaves from the outside. When a slave died, you couldn t really replace them.
Less and less work was getting done in Rome. Its reliance on slavery to do almost all physical
labor made the Roman people themselves weak. They couldn t perform the same tasks to keep
money flowing. When The Vandals took Carthage and North Africa, they also took Rome s last
reliable source of income. The Vandals became pirates, raiding and sabotaging Roman trade
throughout the Mediterranean. By the time the Vandals sacked Rome in 455, in many senses the
West did not have its own economy.

The Election Of A Citizen Of The United States Of America
As a citizen of the United States of America, I am directly affected by every decision that my
representative government makes every day. In past presidential elections, I have not agreed with
some policies that certain Presidents have made, but I have never had the opportunity to have my
voice heard. The number of young voters in our society is horrendous, every year we have less
and less young people from the ages 18 24 that just don t want to vote. Most teens in America just
don t trust the government. This comes from the influence at home, friends, or things they read on
the news. The number of young voters is depleting every year. We need to make a change and show
them that they have a say in the Presidential electionand show them... Show more content on

This could take an effect on kids these days saying they don t trust the government just because
their parents or grandparents don t. Which causes the teens to not vote in the elections. The young
voters are not voting in presidential nor mid term elections. These number for mid term elections
are even worse. In 2010 the turnout of people aged 18 to 24 was just 21% (D.K.). I know not
many people participate in mid term elections, but these number for young voters is horrendous.
21 percent of all the population in the U.S. that s awful. I Second, the young people in our
society are not properly taught about politics and how the government works until they are in
college. In high school I was required to take a government course which taught how the
government works and what policies did. It was a very helpful course into how the government
functioned. The people who don t take this course or are well educated in politics don t have a
clue about what going on. One of the problems uneducated voters have is they don t know who
to vote for in the election. All high schools should require kids to take a course in which they are
learning about how the government works or operates. This will educate people more in who to
vote for and which candidates have the same morals as them. This past year, 38 percent of all
young voters from ages 18 24 voted in the 2012 election (Thom File). This is not a mid term

The Violence Of The Watts Riot
The 1960s was a time for change. It promoted on going expectations of equality for all races. This
proved to be difficult for minorities. In August of 1965, civil unrest broke out, which lead to six
day revolt called the Watts Riot. Nearly thirty years later another riot broke out which caused even
greater damage and left an even greater impact in our history, the Rodney KingRiots. Both of these
events share similar qualities and devastating damages, however, their meanings are much harder
to decipher from one another. These impactful events in our society demonstrate how much there
needs to change in our society, especially when dealing with minorities. The Watts riots began in
the summer of 1965, in a city in Los Angeles called Watts. It all began with the arrest of a young
African American by a white California Highway Patrol officer. Now, it was not because he was
arrested for already doing something illegal, it was for the way the policeofficer treated the
individual. According to Lacine Holland, an eyewitness to the arrest, the officer took him and
threw him in the car like a bag of laundry and kicked his feet in and slammed the door. (Flournoy)
This caused lots of unrest among the fellow residents of Watts. This was just the beginning of
years of pent up oppression for the minorities, which participated in the event. Similarly, in 1992,
the Rodney King riots also arose due to the acquittal of four Los Angeles Police Departmentofficers
for their brutal beating

It certainly can be argued that for every quality there is a sort of opposite, of course in many
instances there is an overlap. Considering tradition black and white culture, it s obvious that
some of the things we base these cultural values on are stereotypes at very best. However, the
foundation of black culture in America is in slavery, and the opposite in this instance with
reference to the white culture is in ownership of the African slaves, a kind of forced inequality.
Although the Emancipation Proclamation began a long fight for supposed freedom and equality
of all men, there is residual hatred and contempt even now. In the instance of age being a factor,
typically we look at our elders and bestow upon them the wisdom of the experience their years on
earth have granted them. Age can also lock in old or obsolete ideals. The youth of a society
oftentimes is regarded as more open minded and therefore more willing to roll with the punches
and adapt to the changing times. With reference to the older professor, Hughes makes a subtle
implication that the instructor will view the narrator s assignment as different, as he is the only
person of color in the entire class, saying, So will my page be colored that I write? ... Being me, it
will not be white. (Kennedy and Gioia, 980). In the final segment of Mr. Semansky s

An Analysis of Why Nations Fail
Descriptive
Why Nations Fail takes an in depth look into why some countries flourish and become rich
powerful nations while other countries are left in or reduced to poverty. Throughout this book
review I will discuss major arguments and theories used by the authors and how they directly
impact international development, keeping in mind that nations are only as strong as their political
and economical systems. Extractive institutions are used throughout this book to explain that the
upper class extracts resources and goods from the lower class. They don t allow growth or
competition, but rather they just exploit the rest of society into doing their labour. It s used to

The essence of institutional drift is a key factor of the 6th chapter. Countries such as Venice and
Ancient Rome are used to describe why so many nations fail, due of the extractiveness of their
governments. There was a short time when these countries had an inclusive system that was
working and helping them grow. But the elite became greedy and power hungry, which set them
on a downward hill to failure. Whereas, in England the opposite was happening where there was
a demand for property rights and change. The elite were too afraid of losing their power to not
agree and it is precisely why England is still one of the most powerful countries in the world.
Extractive institutions play a huge role in encouraging the elite to dismiss up incoming
technological advances that would work towards modernization and industrialization. World
inequality today exists because during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries some countries were
able to take advantage of the Industrial Revolution and the technologies and methods of
organizations that it brought while others were unable to do so. (271). Acemoglu and Robinson put
an emphasis on historical moments such as the industrial revolution which had a role in how
countries development played out some nations took what was dealt to them and used it in their
favor.
Extractive and Inclusive institution was the major theme of this book and analyzing why inequality
is still so apparent in most of the world.

Examples Of Hypocritical Flaws In The Great Gatsby
Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone... just remember that all the people in this world haven
t had the advantages that you ve had (Fitzgerald 1). In Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby, the
portrayal of the characters in the novel show them as hypocritical. This claim that can be shown
through examination of three of the main characters and their actions: Nick s honesty and
judgement, Tom s affair, and Gatsby s nobility. Each of these character s hypocritical flaws can be
reflected by someone in Fitzgerald s life, whether it be him or just someone participating in it. To
begin with, Nick hypocritical in the fact that he is a judgemental person and refuses to acknowledge
that like any average human, he is capable of judgement, yet continues... Show more content on

When being introduced to Gatsby at one of Gatsby s parties, Gatsby tells Tom that he already
knows Daisy to which Tom replies, I wonder where the devil [Gatsby] met Daisy... women run
around too much these days to suit me. They meet all kinds of crazy fish (Fitzgerald 103).
Herein lies his hypocrisy hypocrisy because while he judges Daisy for running around too much
, he himself, is running around with Myrtle, unbeknownst to Daisy. Later, while all riding into
the city together, Tom confronts Gatsby about Daisy in front of everyone saying, I suppose the
latest thing is to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife (Fitzgerald
130). Once again, this is hypocritical because he is so angry about Daisy having an affair with
Gatsby, however at this point he, once again, having an affair with Myrtle so there really is no
room for his complaints. Lastly, while fighting over Daisy s love against Gatsby, Tom says to
him, [what s] more, I love Daisy too... in my heart I love her all the time. (Fitzgerald 131).
Perhaps, if he really loved Daisy, he wouldn t have to go behind her back to secretly cheat on her.
Outside of the book, Tom represents Fitzgerald s stereotype of all the men who take the trophy
wives . They take their trophy wives for exactly the reason that they are trophy wives , prizes he
didn t believe debutante marrying fraternity boys could ever properly love a woman. The
unfortunate truth is, many people end up just as Tom did; Fitzgerald wrote Tom as an arrogant,
angry, burnt out football player who peaked in high school and is only rich through inheritance,
and sadly, Toms are not an uncommon sight, even in modern days. Tom is cheating and abusive
and only married his wife so he would show her off and is hypocritical with the anger he lets out on

B2b And B2b Business Activities
Business to Consumer or B2C, electronic business activities that focus on retail transactions. An
example of a B2C company would be Starbucks. Business to Business or B2B, companies doing
direct business with each other instead of having consumers involved. A great example of a B2B
company would be the Intel Corporation. The Intel Corporation is an American Global technology
company, whom headquarters is located in Santa Clara, California. The overall marketinggoal for
both B2B and B2C companies is the same, increase the profit margin, but the marketing
strategies of the two types of companies will differ based on their company s needs. Both B2C
companies and B2B companies have similar qualities when it comes to their marketing plan. Both
types of companies believe in having a strong brand and having a strong positive image of their
companies. However, the companies will differ when it comes to the reasons why they feel that
having a strong brand will be important to the company. The B2C companies need to have a strong
brand in order to maintain and grow the amount of consumers and costumers they have by matching
the brand of their known products. Individual consumers can become attached to a certain company
solely based on their brand. When it comes to B2B companies having a strong brand will only help
other companies consider rather or not to make the purchase from Intel but the ultimate decision
comes down to many other business factors including how Intel will look

Essay Carl Jung and The Great Gatsby
Carl Jung and The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald s classic story about the shallow aristocracy of the 1920 s
American society, is the topic of much interpretation. This paper presents the proposition that the
Roaring Twenties were years dominated by an SP (part of CarlJung s archetypal psychology that
will later be explained in more depth) society and the characters in The Great Gatsby reflect and
were deeply affected by this fact. Daisy will be analyzed herein, as well as the effect that an SP
society had on her actions and development.

What is SP ? In Jungian terms it is basically the group of sensory people who are free with their
time, S and P being two of four letters that fully make up a persons temperament. According to
Jung, when the two characteristics are combined, the affected person is naturally playful and
careless. They live in the moment and have no time for rules and regulations. They are the
majority of the worlds entertainers, athletes, soldiers, etc. Where there is excitement, there are
SP s. Status and appearance are often important to SP s, yet not so much what is thought of
them by society. When I say that the 20 s were an SP era, I mean just that: the people were of
loose ethics and wanted to be free of responsibility. Of course this does not encompass everyone,
but it is the stereotype of the times, just as not all people were hippies in the 1960 s, the 60 s are
stereotypically the hippie era. Don t be afraid #8230;Taste everything #8230;Sometimes I think
we only half live over here. The Italians live all the way. 2 Thus a young Ernest Hemingway
expressed his creed after returning from Italy and his Red Cross experience during World War I.

times in which he wrote.

The Fall Of The House Of Usher Effect
Edgar Allan Poe once said that the artistry of narratives is in the ability to achieve a unity of
effect (Clement, lecture notes). In his narrative The Fall of the House of Usher, a man gets a
letter from an old friend who wants him to go to his family estate because he is sick. When he
arrives, he notices that his friend and his sister are not the only ones affected by illness. It is
obvious that the house is too. The illness leads to the death of the Ushers and also the destruction
of the house. In The Fall of the House of Usher, Poe makes death and decay, as well as overall
illness, his unity of effect. He creates this effect by using the different features of narratives. He
establishes this effect through his narrator, the setting of the story, and the events that affect the
characters. In this short narrative, there are many textual examples that enforce the effect of death,
decay, and illness. In the succeeding paragraphs, I will be analyzing the style, setting, narrator,
characters, and conflict of this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the early time periods where oral narratives were the only form of story, narratives existed to
teach a lesson or to illustrate a moral. In the medieval period, narratives were for entertainment. It
wasn t until the nineteenth century that tales became about truth. Narratives like The Fall of the
House of Usher aren t about teaching or entertaining. These narratives are about the message or
experience that is being created through writing. They are about presenting readers with an effect
that is made to be felt and thought about. In The Fall of the House of Usher readers are left with
the feeling of death, decay, and illness because of Poe s use of language, story world, narrator,

Examples Of High-Class Conflict In The Great Gatsby
The cynosures of the 1920s were people in the high class society . They had abundant amounts
of money, as well as bragging rights to do as they please. One of the most prominent themes in
The Great Gatsby is the social class conflicts in the 1920s. F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays this
through rich versus poor conflicts, as well as through Old Money versus New Money conflicts.
In this novel, rich are treated significantly different from the poor. The first time the reader really
sees this conflict is when Daisy makes fun of their butler. As if spreading gossip, Daisy bluntly
asks, Do you want to hear about the butler (Fitzgerald pg17)? She then goes on to explain that he

Tom is a rich man who lives in East Egg, whereas George is a poor man who lives at a gas station
in the Valley of Ashes. Since the rich only marry rich, and Gatsby was not available at the time,
Daisy Buchanan marries Tom and keeps her title as a rich individual. On the other end of things
Myrtle Wilson, who lives in the Valley of Ashes hates her life at the gas station , and wants more
for her life than a man who only faked his wealth to be with her (Sam January 17, 2013).
Because of this mishap, Myrtle strives to be with the prosperous Tom Buchanan throughout the
book, but no man would step down in class just to be with a woman at the social status that
Myrtle is at. As a result of the social status difference, Myrtle has no right to speak about Daisy
because she is so far below her. This issue becomes present at the end of chapter 3 when Myrtle,
out of spite and ignorance, begins to shout Daisy s name. Tom is the most dominant character
throughout the novel, and with one swift upward motion broke her nose with his open hand

Is there a specific image which can be attributed to the Troubles in Northern Ireland during the
late 1960s and 1970s? The poet Seamus Heaney answers that there is one particular image and it
is the image of a bog . In this essay, it shall examine as to why Seamus Heaney has used the
imagery of the bog as a symbol so that it can illustrate the political and also the religious troubles of
Northern Irelandduring the late 1960s and 1970s. In addition, it shall employ the use of four of
Seamus Heaneys poems: Bogland ; The Tollund Man ; Requiem of the Croppies and The

What is Asperger Syndrome you ask? It is a rare type of autism that affects about two out of 10,000
children. The definition of autism is a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized
by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language
and abstract concepts. It is sometimes difficult to identify an individual having Asperger syndrome
as it hardly shows any physiological effects, but the social impairment and difficulty these
individuals have, create significant delays in language and cognitive development. In this news

complete set of FI sets and their associations, it needs only to find FCI(frequent closed item) sets

as mining the full set of FI sets, but it will virtually reduce redundant rules to be generated and
expand both efficiency and effectiveness of mining By using CLOSET algorithm we can efficiently

Graduation is one of those awkward times in our lives when we are torn between letting go of

destination is but a speck of hope. Should we look back on what were the greatest twelve years
of our lives times filled with joy from the day we picked out our first schoolbags until the day we

LIFE? We have been impatiently waiting for this day, and now, all we want to do is hit pause,
rewind, and play. We want to slow it down and enjoy the last fleeting moments, but we can t stop
the clock from ticking it s time to let go and fly!
This long journey that began twelve years ago was a blank book, and we were all eager to fill the
pages. We will always look back on the days we spent from preschool to high schoolthose days
long ago, the world seemed so innocent; however, soon enough, we became aware that real life is
different, and we began to face some of the many experiences of adulthood. As the years passed,
we learned not to allow external circumstances to define us. That s right; our book was being
written on our own terms.

Nfl Turnoffs Research Paper
The NFL Playoffs attract millions of fans each year for each team. 12 franchises make it to the
postseason each year, and while everyone wants his or her favorite team will win it all, only one
team can. The worst, however, is when fans are sure their team has won, just to have it ripped away
from them. With that in mind, here are the top three most devastating losses in NFL playoff history:
3. New England Patriots vs Oakland Raiders, 2002 AFC Divisional Round the Brady Rule (The
Tuck Rule): As if Spygate weren t enough to mar the Patriots three Lombardi Trophies from the
turn of the century, there s also The Brady Rule. Brady drops back to pass in the late fourth
quarter in blizzard conditions with his team down to the Raiders the makings of a great
comeback, right? Not exactly. Charles Woodson came around on Brady s blindside, sacked
Brady, knocked the ball loose, and then watched as his teammates recovered it. The refs
reviewed it, decided that Brady needed a little help to win, and called upon an obscure rule in one
of the most controversial calls in NFL history, robbing the Raiders of a win. The rule has since
been abolished. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
New York Giants versus New England Patriots, Super Bowl XLII: And the Patriots make the list
once again, this time with a much different outcome. 16 0 in the regular season and 2 0 in the
playoffs for a grand record of 18 0 heading into the Super Bowl, the Patriots were eyeing
perfection. The Giants on the other hand barely snuck into their Wild Card slot. Easy win, right?
It was back and forth the whole game. Then, at the end, with the Patriots up 14 10, the Giants are
put into third long. Eli Manning takes the snap, gets grabbed by a few defensive linemen, breaks
free, and hurls the ball downfield, and David Tyree makes the best catch in NFL history. Plaxico
Burress s catch was just icing on the 18 1

Capitalism And Socialism And Capitalism
For more than a century capitalism and socialism have been contending to be the best economic
system. Socialism is a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the
means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community
as a whole. Capitalismis an economic and political system in which a country s trade and
industry that is controlled by private owners for profit. Capitalism is the heart and soul of
America s economy. A capitalist economy can take a person from rags to riches or from riches
to rags depending on the path that is taken by one s free will. This concept has made many
American citizens wonder if the capitalist path the path worth taking. There have been radicals
throughout the history of the U.S. who were not satisfied by the capitalist system as well as its
ideals. One of those radicals, Huey Long, a Democratic populist who was a senator of Louisiana
from 1932 1935, gave a speech entitled Share Our Wealth on February 23, 1934. The speech
supported the ideals of socialism by suggesting equal distribution of wealth throughout the nation.
Socialism may have its perks but capitalism is the best path to take since capitalism provides
society with more benefits through economic competition, prosperity, and a moral system that
promotes self interest. After World War I ended on November 11, 1918, American capitalism
started to change, especially when capitalism hit an economic climax during

The Pros And Cons Of Open Border Policy
Modern day America has put strict boundaries on immigration, but during the 18th and 19th
centuries, an open immigration policy was encouraged and accepted. The concept of America as
the land of dreamers and new beginnings is now lost due to recent border policies. An open border
policy should be implemented in America as it upholds the Constitution, benefits the domestic and
international economy, and maintains ethical standards for preserving human life.
Border restrictions and confinements on migration put the very principles of the constitution at
stake. Many proponents of closed borders utilize the Constitution s Foreign Commerce Clause ,
located in Article 1, to support their argument that Congress has been granted power over migration.
According to Ilya Somin, a law professor at George Mason University, the clause supposedly gives
Congress control over migration and border policies. Despite this supposition, the Foreign
Commerce Clause is merely the realization of its name: it only grants Congress power over
commerce between foreign entities. The term commerce implies economic transactions and
consequently the movement of commodities, in this case, international movement of commodities.
While manual labor can be considered a commodity, immigration itself is not only the movement of
manual labor. Immigration is the motion of hope and humanity, a movement in pursuit of the
American dream. This may be represented in manual labor, but immigration is not only that, it

Hypersexualized Images
Mental disorders and hypersexualized images. Regarding other influences and impacts of photo
manipulation on body images and beauty, Day (2014) states that the three most common mental
disorders caused by photo manipulation are eating disorder, depression and low self esteem.
Furthermore, she lists out several statistics and surveys that prove its negativity on human
beings: 80% of women feel worse about themselves after seeing a beauty ad and people as young
as thirteen begin to feel unsatisfied about their body and how they look. As shocking as it is, a
study included in Day s (2014) article states that adolescent girls are more afraid of gaining weight
than getting cancer, losing their parents or nuclear war. Photo manipulation also creates a
hypersexualized issue: A study done in 2011 by the journal Sexuality and Culture shows that 2%
of men and 61% of women are hypersexualized (Nelson, 2012, p.180). Retouched photos are
continuously used as sex sales and convey the wrong definition of sexy that is almost unreachable

Dreisbach (2012) includes a survey from Glamour revealing that among the people who have

and removing excessive body fats, men focus on toning their muscles and make them look leaner
(Dreisbach, 2012). A blogger from In The Frow (2015) expresses her thoughts regarding men who

Caregiving And The Issues Surrounding Care
Caregiving and the issues surrounding care giving for the elderly have been well researched in
the fields of family sociology and gerontology. However, most of these accounts are based on the
role which children play in taking care of their parents. However, little has been said about the
role of grandchildren as a resource for ailing grandparents. The role grandparents play in raising
grandchildren is also well researched but the reverse has not been studied significantly. According
to Barusch s thesis caring for the frail elderly; familysupport, services and care management the
role of grandchildren as caregivers for grandparents is not entirely clear. The thesis claims that
although grandchildren are willing to give care to ill grandparents, they are more likely to receive
aid than give it. Moreover, the thesis claims that grandchildren might be more demanding than
resourceful.
This paper will show that in the event of great need grandchildren may prove to be important
caregivers. It is universal that children take care of their parents in one way or another when they
reach old age; it is also universal that spouses take care of each other in old age. However, it
seems that caregiving for the elderly beyond the role of children depends on cultural contexts. In
collectivist cultures of Asia for instance, grandchildren and other extended family contribute heavily
in taking care of the elderly. In individualistic cultures of the West, caregiving roles are limited to

If I could write an Immigration Act for today it would state that immigration would be allowed but
also monitored, in order to control the population from getting out of hand. Also, anyone caught in
this country illegally, without papers of any sort, would be sent back to their country of origin and
would also be banned from trying to re enter the country, legally or not.
Character Representation
In the film that we watched in class, many of the characters portray or represent something in real
life. Starting off with the mice in the beginning of the movie or Fible s family. They represent a
major group of people who immigrated to this country during the time of immigration, the Jews.
The reason that they immigrate to America is because they are fleeing the cats, and supposedly
there are no cats in America. The reason that they are fleeing from the cats is because the cats
represent oppression and the Russians. The pigeons represent the French and they are building the
Statue of Liberty, in the beginning of the movie. Fible s mouse friend, Tony, is Italian, and the other
mouse friend, she is Irish.

Discrimination And Discrimination
America s prison incarceration rate has increased by over 600%. This outlandish statistic leaves
America with the largest incarceration rate in the world. (Pager 2003) As of right now, one third of
the population has a criminal record of some sort (Barraza 2016). The issue of incarceration doesn t
stop with alarming numbers, however. A damaging amount of stigma is attached to those that have
a criminal record. Having a record essentially becomes an automatic stamp of dismissal from
American society; you are barred from, or severely limited in your ability to, gain meaningful
employment, pay for higher education, or, in some cases, be banned from housing altogether. In
2016, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced that they would now be
expanding the protections of the Fair Housing Act to restrict the blanket denial of housing to those
with criminal records (2016). To better understand the content of this newer policy, the social
conditions that made it necessary, and the impact it can have on inequality, having an understanding
of sociological concepts such as approaches to community based discrimination, de facto
segregation, steering practices, total discrimination, and the benefits of integration is essential.
The Fair Housing Act of 1968 was passed to prevent the same discrimination we seem to be
suffocating in today. The purpose of the act was to make it unlawful to deny access to housing
based on the race, color, religion, or national origin (Yinger 1999). Later, the act would be
amended to included protected parties such as disabled people, for example. Almost 50 years
after the original act was signed into law, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development is making a change to expand, or at least specifically acknowledge and included,
those that have a criminal record. The press release made by a department representative
explicitly states, Under this standard, a facially neutral policy or practice that has a discriminatory
effect violates the Act if it is not supported by a legally sufficient justification. Thus, where a
policy or practice that restricts access to housing on the basis of criminal history has a disparate
impact on individuals of a particular race,

Nursing Home Perception Vs. Reality Essay
Nursing Home Perception vs. Reality
The Palace is located in the heart of the gables. It is one of the top notch awarded nursing home
facilities for seniors stated by many families. Currently being an employee at this facility, I am
learning the frightful stories of senior living. Even the Palace one of the most expensive,
awarded senior living is actually a terrible place for the elderly. Especially, working at the Front
Desk as the receptionist, I have seen firsthand how these poor seniors are forced into these
haunted luxurious homes. The marble of the building has been often a misleading reason for
placing their parent or grandparent in such terrible care. Most humans tend to judge by the
appearance of the nursing homes rather than further investigating any violations that the facilities
may have. From my own experience with my grandmother, I know it can be very difficult to take
care of a senior citizen, especially when they suffer from various conditions and are just not safe in
their home. Once adults become seniors, they require a lot of attention and assistance, which is
hard when running a whole household and a career. But placing your loved one in one of these
facilities can just shorten the amount of time they have to live. Also, it can be very expensive.
Lastly, nursing home makes seniors feel the lack of freedom. To begin with, many families decide
to place their loved ones under the care of a nursing home to receive some peace of mind. But are

Citizen Kane Is A Quarry For Filmmakers
As esteemed film director William Friedkin once said; Citizen Kane is a quarry for filmmakers .
It is undeniable that Citizen Kane is the epitome of the great American film. It was initially
released in 1941 and was met with great criticism . However, since its release many years ago it is
evident that the film made advancements in cinema techniques which were well ahead of its time .
The foremost reason Citizen Kaneis considered one of the great American films ever created is due
to the innovative film techniques that director Orson Wellesbrought to life .These techniques include
new methods for cinematography, lighting, and sound . The cinematography in Citizen Kane is
one of the primary reasons it is viewed as one of the most celebrated works in cinema. The
initiation of new approaches to cinematography is greatly credited to cinematographer Greg
Toland. Toland who was known for his work as director of photography for such films as Dead
End (1937), Wuthering Heights (1939) which he won an academy award for, The Grapes of Wrath
(1940), and many more. The collaboration between Welles and Toland broke the traditions of
atypical 1940 s film. Essentially, this meant that there should not be great attention to participation
of the camera. However, Welles and Toland attempted to attract as much attention to the camera as
possible, by using dramatic angles and unusual shots. As Martin Scorsese said; Welles was not
afraid to be self conscious with the camera . To

An Open Campus Lunch Program Essay
An open campus lunch program is when, during the lunch period, students are permitted to leave
campus and get lunch from local businesses or even home. At Urbana High School we currently
have four lunch shifts, during which students pack or buy lunches. I believe Frederick County
Public Schools should start an open campus lunchprogram for seniors because the schoollunches are
not healthy enough or appealing and do not have enough lunch options. The benefits that could
come from this program go beyond the happiness of the seniors, they will reach the classrooms,
staff members, and community.
The lunches served in Frederick County Schools, and Urbana High School in particular lack
nutritional value and are unappetizing. When interviewing Casey Ballow (a student who buys
lunch everyday) about whether the school lunches are nutrional she said The majority of students
walk out [of the lunch line] without the most nutritional part of their lunch . FCPS has made
snacks whole grain, which usually makes them less tasty. Packing a lunch is a hassle because it is
both time consuming and expensive, not to mention you cannot bring any warm foods. When
asked why Casey chooses to buy a lunch, despite getting soggy chicken patties and burnt french
fries she said Buying a lunch saves me time in morning . There is not a wide enough selection of
lunch foods for students.

Juvenile Punishment In The Juvenile Justice System
Breaking the cycle of recidivism among chronic and habitual juvenile offenders is one of the
major issues encountering the juvenile justice system. Millions of dollars are distributed each
year by state and county officials for custodial care, treatment, and rehabilitation for juvenile
offenders (Albert R. Roberts Michael J. Camasso, 1991). Analyses presume that punishment plays
a major role in shaping the behavior of people. This process includes children of all ages, students
in a school setting, employees in the work place, and citizens in the community (Cherrington,
2007). Punishment has been a part of society for many years and people are divided on the
punishment concept. Child rearing is viewed by some as a form of punishment and some states
just as California has debated that spanking is illegal (Cherrington, 2007). Spanking being a form
of punishment is viewed also an effective and timely way to alter behavior. Some studies reveal
without punishment homes, schools, and the communities will decay. The big question is if
punishment works and if it does works how can it be proven. Punishment and its effect have been
researched and studied through child rearing, work place management, and in the field of
criminology(Cherrington, 2007). An example of punishment in the work place would be placing an
employee on probation for excessive tardiness, grounding a teenager for not cleaning his or her
room, or sentencing a criminal offender to prisonfor committing a crime.

Evaluating Alice s Goals Of Pay Off Student Loan
Introduction Goals are vital in any financial planning process to be successful. For goals to be
truly useful, they must be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely ( Siegel Yacht,

the need to make or plan goals flexible that can easily adjust according to each situation. This
paper will use the S.M.A.R.T planning model to evaluate Alice s goals of; pay off student loan,

The Loss Of Helen Keller In Everyday Life
There are many privileges in daily life that people take for granted at most times. When an
average person wakes up in the morning to the sound of birds chirping and the sight of sunlight

do not have these seemingly insignificant gifts. Helen Keller was one of many people who had the
gift of seeing and hearingtaken away at a young age. She never had many experiences or

There are few basic life functions or daily activities that are affected by a loss of hearing. One of
the few is communication. A deaf person would not likely be able to communicate through simply
speaking, or if he or she did, she may not be easily understood because she cannot hear the sounds
she is making. Someone with severe hearing loss, or has lost their hearing altogether, would not be
able to enjoy music in the same way as someone that hears well. Someone who is hard of hearing
can learn sign language in order to communicate with any other person that understands sign
language. They could also hire an interpreter, who is able to relay spoken information to the deaf

communicating through sign language. A deaf person would not be able to listen to music

determine what note they are playing. A person s daily life would not change drastically if they

line, shape, form, pattern and colour and in second year when I was first introduced to these,
they never really made sense. Now it all makes complete sense, as when I m drawing I enter

Anyone Lived In A Pretty How Town Essay
In his poem, anyone lived in a pretty how town, E. E. Cummings describes the life lived by the
average joe, symbolized by protagonist anyone, in the average pretty how town setting.
Cummings asserts that children will be born and raised to all be the same, with no individuality,
then grow into busy adults who cared for anyone not at all, and perhaps one day get married, live
their lives, and die, still with nevers, or an unfulfilled bucket list. It is through the use of repetition,
foreshadowing, and figurative language that Cummings conveys a mood of sad inevitability as he
explains how this lifestyle repeats itself in cycles and how death will come to everyone, all while
they live their lives in a society that might be pretty, but which lacks any real sense of community
and individuality. Cummings uses repetition to point out how life goes on, and how each
generation repeats a cycle. For instance, throughout the poem, Cummings repeats the names... Show

all people, which Cummings uses to explain the first problem with the setting, which is how all
the people in it apparently don t care for anyone, except for maybe themselves. Cummings then
uses an extended metaphor to discuss the second problem. Sowed their isn t is a metaphor for the
people raising children, and reaped their same refers to how these children have all been raised to
conform to society so that they all end up the same. So in the end, the setting of Cummings poem is

barely get any clothing to wear, while all of them just get barely enough food to survive, He also
says that slaves have to lie half the time to avoid getting whipped and beaten.
This book gives us a real insight on how bad slavery was, how Douglass coped with it, and
eventually how he escapes from it later in the book. Douglass uses persuasive language to show
the true colors of slavery, and he uses his own experiences of being a slave himself to his
advantage by giving us accounts of his life as a slave. In this essay, I want to focus on the truth,
why slaves have to lie their way out of certain situations, and go more in depth of how Douglass
language is highly persuasive to the abolitionists of that time.
I want to focus on one specific part in this essay, a part that is very descriptive, persuasive, and
analyze deep into the text. The slave in this quote has no idea that the person they are talking to is
their actual master. It states:
The colonel, after ascertaining whom the slave belonged to,

Religion Is A Form Of Government
Democracy is a form of government, where a constitution guarantees basic personal and political
rights, fair and free elections, and independent courts of law. (Democracy 2004). Religion and
politics have been long viewed as partners for many and yet some find the relationship a struggle.
Religion usually pertains to an individual or a community of like minded members in the private
sector. An example of such a body of individuals includes church or social organizations. As part of
Western civilization, Americans typically embraced the separation of church and state as they
believe that religionhas no place in politics at all. Politics usually apply to the public sector where
individuals serve as members of a wider community such as... Show more content on

How do they impact each other?
According to Wikipedia 2014, Religion is an organized collection of beliefs, cultural systems, and
world views that relate humanity to an order of existence. It is also the most intensive and
comprehensive method of valuing that is experienced by humankind . Religion is often difficult to
identify or define because it overlaps on many different boundaries in human experience. This
complex phenomenon has led many theorists to attempt to form a cohesive definition, however,
every theory has its limitations thus making this task utterly impossible to complete. Religion can
also resolve matters on the private and public sector such as issues regarding life and death, love
and sex, authority and freedom. Although religious traditions often challenge each other, they also
offer individuals with a sense of security and direction. It can also dictate those who are in power
versus those who are not, and often provides validation for imbalances in social, economic, and
political power, as well as structure for advancement and revolutionary change.
According to Fairlax 2014, Politics is the art or science of government or governing, especially the
governing of a political entity, such as a nation, and the administration and control of its internal
and external affairs , the debate or conflict among individuals or parties having or hoping to

Theories Of Discovering Periodic Trends
Discovering Periodic Trends Introduction For years, many scientists put together several different
lists of the elements based on theories about the properties of these elements but the first official
periodic table was assembled by Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869. Later, due to modern communication
abilities, scientists modified Mendeleev s periodic table to make it more organized and easier to
understand. The current version was organized in a way that scientists could easily identify trends
like density, melting/boiling points, ionization energy, electronegativity, and atomic mass.
Experimental Data on the properties of elements 1 through 36 were recorded and formatted on an
Excel sheet. This data was converted into a series of graphs in... Show more content on

They learned that the density of an element increase from top to bottom and inward towards the
transitions metals. They also learned that the boiling and melting point trends are similar in
pattern with the density trend. They learned that the ionization energy decreases top to bottom
and increases left to right. They also learned that the electronegativity trend is similar in pattern
to the ionization energy trend except it does not affect any of the noble gases except for Xeon.
Lastly, they learned that the atomic radius increases top to bottom and decreases left to right.
This research lab is very reliable because the sources where the information was gathered was
credible and they all agreed with each other. The information gained from this lab is of high
significance because it is fundamental to the understanding of all chemistry. Of course there were
a lot of cases in which there were occasional hiccups in the general periodic trends. These are due
to the specific nature of those elements and it might be a good idea next time to highlight those
outlying values in a different color on the graph and provide an explanation underneath as to why
the highlighted element does not follow the rule of that specific

European Integration Through The Decades Essay
In its historical context discuss why and how the EU was set up and the advantages and
disadvantages of membership.
Europe was a politically and fragile continent after the Second World War that claimed millions of
lives. It is in that background, that the first steps to European integration were taken with the
establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). The celebrated Schuman Plan,
laid the foundation for the first real supra national economy in the world, that is, the ECSC. The
European integration continued through the decades with the establishment of the European
Economic Community (ECC) and the European Union (EU). In the recent period, the EU has come
under intense questioning with the economic crisis in Europe starting 2007. The recent Brexit vote
has put further questions on the future of the EU. This essay considers the process of European
integration through the decades and also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the union.
The Second World War resulted in economic devastation; however, it is remarkable how fast
Europe recovered after the war and economists do refer to this period as the Golden Age of
European economic growth . Despite the economic recovery in Europe, there were few areas of
discord, one of these being the French favouring a Customs Union and the English wanting a Free
Trade Area. Moreover, there was distrust between France and Germany, which impacted the initial
years of integration . Nevertheless, the European

Peter V. North Carolina Case Analysis
In the case of Peter v. North Carolina, we the jury find Michael Peterson not guilty of first
degree murder of his wife Katherine Peterson. The information that was presented in this case
does not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Michael was motivated by an act of malice when he
had decided to take away the life of a loved one. Because of this occurence, Michael is currently
facing another trial in order to see if he is guilty for a crime he did not commit. As a jury, we cannot
condone the act of putting an innocent bystander in a position to be imprisoned if he is not
condemned of the charges that is handed down from court. Convicting Michael as a murderer in
this case would take away the freedom that he deserves and distort the peaceful atmosphere that
surrounds his family.
Keeping this in mind, we need to come to an understanding that being in a jury carries a lot of
weight because a decision we make will bring forth life changing consequences. The prosecutors in
this case believe that Katherine was beaten by Michael in an act of malice. In an effort to support
their case, they have presented evidence that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The evidence that was presented from the defense in this case carries a significant amount of
weight that helped to draw us to the conclusion that Michael is innocent and that the event was just
an unfortunate accident. As a jury, we reviewed the defenses owl theory, their take on the peterson
s financial situation, and their explanation of a possible burglary occurring in the home during the
time of the incident. We found the evidence to be very compelling, effective, and notable in its
defense of Michael Peterson. Going forward, we will try to use the information obtained to prove

Ross explains that he understands that forensic psychology is a relatively new specialty area.
However, he added that working juvenile cases, domestic violence cases, and screening cases
gave him a much broader and clear perspective of the field. In addition, he stated that working
closely with law enforcement specialists and psychologists allowed him to gain more perspective.
Both lawyers and forensic psychologists assist law enforcement professionals in investigating and
solving crime (Baker De Long, 2009). Ross states that many legal issues that tangles with
psychological nature spawns from questions of human behaviors and mental states and processes
of human beings. Ross explains that these past works enabled him to appreciate the area of
forensic psychology. He further states some of the tactics and skills that this discipline provides.
Forensic psychology furnishes his skills to determine the competency of a criminal defendant, the
extent to which an eyewitness is reliable, psychological defenses a criminal defendant can rely on,
and how much discretion should judges have in sentencing. Ross explains the new approach that
this field offers and how it may use scientific research and empirical knowledge to handle these
issues. (Counselor Ross was very general when answering). First Deputy Prosecutor is generally
responsible for overlooking other deputy prosecutors.

Importance Of College Education Essay
Linda Jiang Student Essay Question #1: Why is a college education important to you? 300 500
words each
A college education is important to me because it opens my future for better opportunities within
the medical field. Currently, a pharmacist is a profession that I am the most interested in because I
enjoy chemistry, the meticulous, and well organized work that they are known for. A college
education will teach me the skills to become a pharmacist, provide me with hands on experiences
in this career, and give me ample resources to find a job in the most enjoyable career path. Even
if I choose to pursue a different career, a college education will most definitely prepare me for the
career as long as I am willing to study and work hard. In the competitive world that we live in,
even a low paying job can be difficult to procure, not to mention how scarce high paying jobs
and reasonable working conditions are. A college education makes it easier to get high paying
jobs and stand out in job applications. College graduates have an edge and a larger variety of
jobs to choose from. Even if through the college education I do not find what I enjoy doing, the
professors, people I would have met, and activities that I would have participated in, will most
likely give me a larger insight on what I want to do as a career.
In addition to opening my future to better opportunities, there are also two other reasons why a
college education is important to me. The first reason is that I

Victory of the North
22 March 2013
Victory of the North
There are many causes that led to the victory of the North, as well as many effects that follow their
victory. Three important causes that led to the victory of the North are economic growth, secession,
and the election of President Abraham Lincoln. Three important effects that followed the victory of
the Northern States in the American Civil Warare emancipation, a new financial system, and
political freedom.
The Civil War of America has been discussed as the first modern war of the new industrial age.

such mass destruction and deadly force. America had not yet seen casualties of this magnitude to ...

They continued to adopt a constitution of their own. Then they chose Jefferson Davis from the
state of Mississippi to be their president.
The first effect of the North s victory over the South is emancipation. Even though slaves were
technically freed through contraband , Lincoln continued to persist that this fights intent is to save
the Union, not to free the slaves. But, before eighteen sixty two, Lincoln considered emancipation
as being the next step necessary to win the war. On July twenty second eighteen sixty two, Lincoln
unveiled a draft of the Emancipation Proclamation to his cabinet. It proposed emancipation of all
slaves in rebel areas on January 1st, eighteen sixty three. The Secretary of State William H. Seward
agreed with Lincoln s initial draft, but he warned President Lincoln to wait till the Union had won a
major victory before introducing the proclamation to the public. In eighteen sixty two President
Lincoln got his opportunity to do so, when the Union was victorious in the Battle of Antietam. On
September twenty second President Lincoln officially issued the Emancipation Proclamation to the
public. The Proclamation warned the Confederate states that if they did not surrender by January
first, eighteen sixty three, their slaves would be freed.
The second effect of the North s victory over the South is a new financial system. The American

Human Intelligence In The Internet Era. Nowadays, If A
Human Intelligence in the Internet Era Nowadays, if a young adult hears a new terminology,
instead of going to a library and looking it up in an encyclopedia as what his or her parents would
have done, he or she will pull out his or her smartphone and google it. Thanks to Google and all
other commercial Internet companies, we are closer to all kinds of information, both useful and
useless, than any other time in human history. In Nicholas Carr s article Is Google Making Us
Stupid? , he admits how the immediate access to the rich store of online information benefits him
largely as a writer (Carr, 589). While enjoying this positive influence of the Net, however, he brings

Overall, as Carr has suggested, we should be aware of the changes in our reading and thinking
behaviors that the Internet causes, try to keep thinking in the deep and perceptive way and
cherish the ambiguity of our human intelligence. In the article, Carr expresses his concerns
about the Internet, but he is not completely negative about it or against it; he writes ahead that
the Internet has been a godsend to him as a writer (Carr, 589). What he tries to do is to remind
us that there are another possible perspective and guideline when we judge and criticize the
Internet. After describing all his concerns about the Internet and human intelligence, Carr writes
that maybe he is just a worrywart and there s a countertendency to expect the worst of every new
tool or machine and refers to the example of Socrates and Squarciafico (Carr, 595). He shows his
acknowledgment of the opportunities the Net brings us and his understanding of the reasonability
of possible disagreement with him. You should be skeptical of my skepticism, he writes (Carr,
596). He expects us to be skeptical of his argument, because he wants us to think more about both
pros and cons of the Net. He does not try to deny the Internet or convince us not to use it. Instead,
he puts forward the other side of the case to let us have forethought from a different perspective
and to be more critical when judging the Internet. When we agree on the bright side of the Internet,

John Stewart Daily Show Analysis
Not a Laughing Matter: The Negative Effects of Satirical News When Jon Stewart announced his

Edward Murrow, who are famed for not only their voices that reached out to the nation but also

Analysis Of The Movie Ava
Ava had found herself in more than a few situations that had left her cheeks bright red with
embarrassment and shame, but this topped all of them by far. It was bad enough that her
bronzed, nubile body was marred by the grime and dirt that seemed to infest every spot upon the
floor of the locker room. In fact, it was bad enough that her rival, who had just beat and
humiliated her in front of an audience, was now being pleased by Ava s tongue. However, the
worst part of it all, as she lay there with her tongue tween Aida s folds and her breasts being toyed
with like they were stress balls, was that she was enjoying it.
Despite just how terrible and messed up all of it was, Ava couldn t help but feel her arousal

What she had not really counted on was the extensive experience of her opponent, which was not
wholly known to her, or simply just how easy her plan was to decipher.
So, instead of really resisting her opponent, all Ava was doing was playing exactly into the Valkyrie
s hands. And it was to this end that when Aida began to hurl obscenities and threats like alms to a
beggar, she quickened her pace. If everything went according to plan, Aida would flow between
orgasms until the entire experience began to hurt and exhaust rather than pleasure.
Aida moaned out as she began to finish once more, her whole body twitching and writhing
against the admittedly talented tongue of the girl below her. It was always somewhat
astonishing to her just how easy it was to use her conquered foes. She played them like a fiddle,
and Ava was no different. The dumb brunette was, as her phone displayed, just another in a long
line girls who had been reduced to unabashed sluts. The whole idea reminded Aida that one
picture of her foe s humiliation was hardly enough to remind her of just how complete the
process had been. As she teetered over the edge of her second orgasm she grabbed a fistful of her
conquered foe s hair, pulling her back just enough to encapsulate her mouth as she commanded
Smile! before snapping a picture and returning Ava to her place. Looking at the photo, she was
pleased at how easily Ava had given in, a wide grin on the

How Religion Has Influenced The Life Of A Nun
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another? (Jn
13:35)What is a committed religious life for being a Catholic sister or nun. Catholic sister and nuns
have a different variation of lifestyle, ministries and callings. All community has its own peculiar
identity and flavor, this is because there are no two association, as there is no two nuns that are the
same. As we watch movies about nuns we sometimes predict sisters and nuns to be living a highly
ordered life which is unchanging in structure which is repetitive in context. But the truth is that
there may be some regular customs and practices, a day in Catholic sister and nunlife as it is
diverse, especially as the Holy Spirit is in charge.
As a day in a life of nuns are constructed around service within the chapel because by joining a
convent or nunnery, nuns have to make a choice to devote their life to God. Religion has influenced
the life of a nun. A lot of convents do have its own particular daily timetable for a nun as many do
the following similarly:
the first day of services 02.00: Matins Laud
After Matins Laud, nuns would go back to bed and would get up again at first light. She then
would go and wash and have a breakfast which consist of bread and beer. This is because of the
boiling process involved in the making of beer.( it was a lot less dangerous to drink beer than water.)

  • 2. Essay On How Did The Roman Empire Divide An Empire Divided When the massive civil conflict finally ended in 284. It was decided the empire was too strained and large to be governed by one man in one city. It limited military power. And created pockets where ambitious generals could become usurpers. No one wanted another Crisis. The empire was split in two. The Western and Eastern Roman Empires, The West contained Rome, and the provinces west of the Greek peninsula. The East, often called the Byzantine Empire due to the name of its capital, with everything to the east. While this helped the governing process of Rome it did lead to the downfall of the Western Empire. When the East split away, Western Rome lost a significant part of its territory that generated money for the empire. Most of Western Rome was agricultural with the exception of North Africa and western Hispania. Both of which would later be taken over by the Vandals. Western Rome could not sustain itself without the support of the Eastern Empire. Only attacking to regain lost territory. This was a good thing for the Roman military. But, it did cripple the workhorse of the Roman economy. Slaves. Once the expansion ended, Rome stopped receiving fresh slaves from the outside. When a slave died, you couldn t really replace them. Less and less work was getting done in Rome. Its reliance on slavery to do almost all physical labor made the Roman people themselves weak. They couldn t perform the same tasks to keep money flowing. When The Vandals took Carthage and North Africa, they also took Rome s last reliable source of income. The Vandals became pirates, raiding and sabotaging Roman trade throughout the Mediterranean. By the time the Vandals sacked Rome in 455, in many senses the West did not have its own economy. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Election Of A Citizen Of The United States Of America As a citizen of the United States of America, I am directly affected by every decision that my representative government makes every day. In past presidential elections, I have not agreed with some policies that certain Presidents have made, but I have never had the opportunity to have my voice heard. The number of young voters in our society is horrendous, every year we have less and less young people from the ages 18 24 that just don t want to vote. Most teens in America just don t trust the government. This comes from the influence at home, friends, or things they read on the news. The number of young voters is depleting every year. We need to make a change and show them that they have a say in the Presidential electionand show them... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This could take an effect on kids these days saying they don t trust the government just because their parents or grandparents don t. Which causes the teens to not vote in the elections. The young voters are not voting in presidential nor mid term elections. These number for mid term elections are even worse. In 2010 the turnout of people aged 18 to 24 was just 21% (D.K.). I know not many people participate in mid term elections, but these number for young voters is horrendous. 21 percent of all the population in the U.S. that s awful. I Second, the young people in our society are not properly taught about politics and how the government works until they are in college. In high school I was required to take a government course which taught how the government works and what policies did. It was a very helpful course into how the government functioned. The people who don t take this course or are well educated in politics don t have a clue about what going on. One of the problems uneducated voters have is they don t know who to vote for in the election. All high schools should require kids to take a course in which they are learning about how the government works or operates. This will educate people more in who to vote for and which candidates have the same morals as them. This past year, 38 percent of all young voters from ages 18 24 voted in the 2012 election (Thom File). This is not a mid term ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Violence Of The Watts Riot The 1960s was a time for change. It promoted on going expectations of equality for all races. This proved to be difficult for minorities. In August of 1965, civil unrest broke out, which lead to six day revolt called the Watts Riot. Nearly thirty years later another riot broke out which caused even greater damage and left an even greater impact in our history, the Rodney KingRiots. Both of these events share similar qualities and devastating damages, however, their meanings are much harder to decipher from one another. These impactful events in our society demonstrate how much there needs to change in our society, especially when dealing with minorities. The Watts riots began in the summer of 1965, in a city in Los Angeles called Watts. It all began with the arrest of a young African American by a white California Highway Patrol officer. Now, it was not because he was arrested for already doing something illegal, it was for the way the policeofficer treated the individual. According to Lacine Holland, an eyewitness to the arrest, the officer took him and threw him in the car like a bag of laundry and kicked his feet in and slammed the door. (Flournoy) This caused lots of unrest among the fellow residents of Watts. This was just the beginning of years of pent up oppression for the minorities, which participated in the event. Similarly, in 1992, the Rodney King riots also arose due to the acquittal of four Los Angeles Police Departmentofficers for their brutal beating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It certainly can be argued that for every quality there is a sort of opposite, of course in many instances there is an overlap. Considering tradition black and white culture, it s obvious that some of the things we base these cultural values on are stereotypes at very best. However, the foundation of black culture in America is in slavery, and the opposite in this instance with reference to the white culture is in ownership of the African slaves, a kind of forced inequality. Although the Emancipation Proclamation began a long fight for supposed freedom and equality of all men, there is residual hatred and contempt even now. In the instance of age being a factor, typically we look at our elders and bestow upon them the wisdom of the experience their years on earth have granted them. Age can also lock in old or obsolete ideals. The youth of a society oftentimes is regarded as more open minded and therefore more willing to roll with the punches and adapt to the changing times. An Analysis of Why Nations Fail Descriptive Why Nations Fail takes an in depth look into why some countries flourish and become rich powerful nations while other countries are left in or reduced to poverty. Throughout this book review I will discuss major arguments and theories used by the authors and how they directly impact international development, keeping in mind that nations are only as strong as their political and economical systems. Extractive institutions are used throughout this book to explain that the upper class extracts resources and goods from the lower class. They don t allow growth or competition, but rather they just exploit the rest of society into doing their labour. It s used to please a few, rather than the majority, and can still be seen in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The essence of institutional drift is a key factor of the 6th chapter. Countries such as Venice and Ancient Rome are used to describe why so many nations fail, due of the extractiveness of their governments. There was a short time when these countries had an inclusive system that was working and helping them grow. But the elite became greedy and power hungry, which set them on a downward hill to failure. Whereas, in England the opposite was happening where there was a demand for property rights and change. The elite were too afraid of losing their power to not agree and it is precisely why England is still one of the most powerful countries in the world. Extractive institutions play a huge role in encouraging the elite to dismiss up incoming technological advances that would work towards modernization and industrialization. World inequality today exists because during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries some countries were able to take advantage of the Industrial Revolution and the technologies and methods of organizations that it brought while others were unable to do so. (271). Acemoglu and Robinson put an emphasis on historical moments such as the industrial revolution which had a role in how countries development played out some nations took what was dealt to them and used it in their favor. Extractive and Inclusive institution was the major theme of this book and analyzing why inequality is still so apparent in most of the world. Critical Why Nations ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Examples Of Hypocritical Flaws In The Great Gatsby Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone... just remember that all the people in this world haven t had the advantages that you ve had (Fitzgerald 1). In Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby, the portrayal of the characters in the novel show them as hypocritical. This claim that can be shown through examination of three of the main characters and their actions: Nick s honesty and judgement, Tom s affair, and Gatsby s nobility. Each of these character s hypocritical flaws can be reflected by someone in Fitzgerald s life, whether it be him or just someone participating in it. Herein lies his hypocrisy hypocrisy because while he judges Daisy for running around too much , he himself, is running around with Myrtle, unbeknownst to Daisy. Later, while all riding into the city together, Tom confronts Gatsby about Daisy in front of everyone saying, I suppose the latest thing is to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife (Fitzgerald 130). Once again, this is hypocritical because he is so angry about Daisy having an affair with Gatsby, however at this point he, once again, having an affair with Myrtle so there really is no room for his complaints. Lastly, while fighting over Daisy s love against Gatsby, Tom says to him, [what s] more, I love Daisy too... in my heart I love her all the time. (Fitzgerald 131). Perhaps, if he really loved Daisy, he wouldn t have to go behind her back to secretly cheat on her. Outside of the book, Tom represents Fitzgerald s stereotype of all the men who take the trophy wives . They take their trophy wives for exactly the reason that they are trophy wives , prizes he didn t believe debutante marrying fraternity boys could ever properly love a woman. The unfortunate truth is, many people end up just as Tom did; Fitzgerald wrote Tom as an arrogant, angry, burnt out football player who peaked in high school and is only rich through inheritance, and sadly, Toms are not an uncommon sight, even in modern days. Business to Business or B2B, companies doing direct business with each other instead of having consumers involved. A great example of a B2B company would be the Intel Corporation. The Intel Corporation is an American Global technology company, whom headquarters is located in Santa Clara, California. The overall marketinggoal for both B2B and B2C companies is the same, increase the profit margin, but the marketing strategies of the two types of companies will differ based on their company s needs. Both B2C companies and B2B companies have similar qualities when it comes to their marketing plan. Both types of companies believe in having a strong brand and having a strong positive image of their companies. However, the companies will differ when it comes to the reasons why they feel that having a strong brand will be important to the company. The B2C companies need to have a strong brand in order to maintain and grow the amount of consumers and costumers they have by matching the brand of their known products. Individual consumers can become attached to a certain company solely based on their brand. When it comes to B2B companies having a strong brand will only help other companies consider rather or not to make the purchase from Intel but the ultimate decision comes down to many other business factors including how Intel will look ... • 11. Essay Carl Jung and The Great Gatsby Carl Jung and The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald s classic story about the shallow aristocracy of the 1920 s American society, is the topic of much interpretation. This paper presents the proposition that the Roaring Twenties were years dominated by an SP (part of CarlJung s archetypal psychology that will later be explained in more depth) society and the characters in The Great Gatsby reflect and were deeply affected by this fact. Daisy will be analyzed herein, as well as the effect that an SP society had on her actions and development. The human psyche has been the basis of study for millennia. In Jungian terms it is basically the group of sensory people who are free with their time, S and P being two of four letters that fully make up a persons temperament. According to Jung, when the two characteristics are combined, the affected person is naturally playful and careless. They live in the moment and have no time for rules and regulations. They are the majority of the worlds entertainers, athletes, soldiers, etc. Where there is excitement, there are SP s. Status and appearance are often important to SP s, yet not so much what is thought of them by society. When I say that the 20 s were an SP era, I mean just that: the people were of loose ethics and wanted to be free of responsibility. Of course this does not encompass everyone, but it is the stereotype of the times, just as not all people were hippies in the 1960 s, the 60 s are stereotypically the hippie era. • 13. The Fall Of The House Of Usher Effect Edgar Allan Poe once said that the artistry of narratives is in the ability to achieve a unity of effect (Clement, lecture notes). In his narrative The Fall of the House of Usher, a man gets a letter from an old friend who wants him to go to his family estate because he is sick. When he arrives, he notices that his friend and his sister are not the only ones affected by illness. It is obvious that the house is too. The illness leads to the death of the Ushers and also the destruction of the house. In The Fall of the House of Usher, Poe makes death and decay, as well as overall illness, his unity of effect. He creates this effect by using the different features of narratives. He establishes this effect through his narrator, the setting of the story, and the events that affect the characters. In this short narrative, there are many textual examples that enforce the effect of death, decay, and illness. They had abundant amounts of money, as well as bragging rights to do as they please. One of the most prominent themes in The Great Gatsby is the social class conflicts in the 1920s. F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays this through rich versus poor conflicts, as well as through Old Money versus New Money conflicts. In this novel, rich are treated significantly different from the poor. The first time the reader really sees this conflict is when Daisy makes fun of their butler. As if spreading gossip, Daisy bluntly asks, Do you want to hear about the butler (Fitzgerald pg17)? On the other end of things Myrtle Wilson, who lives in the Valley of Ashes hates her life at the gas station , and wants more for her life than a man who only faked his wealth to be with her (Sam January 17, 2013). Because of this mishap, Myrtle strives to be with the prosperous Tom Buchanan throughout the book, but no man would step down in class just to be with a woman at the social status that Myrtle is at. As a result of the social status difference, Myrtle has no right to speak about Daisy because she is so far below her. This issue becomes present at the end of chapter 3 when Myrtle, out of spite and ignorance, begins to shout Daisy s name. Tom is the most dominant character throughout the novel, and with one swift upward motion broke her nose with his open hand (Fitzgerald pg41). Graduation is one of those awkward times in our lives when we are torn between letting go of our safe haven where we have many a cherished memory and anticipating a new path where the destination is but a speck of hope. Should we look back on what were the greatest twelve years of our lives times filled with joy from the day we picked out our first schoolbags until the day we emptied our lockers for the last time? This long journey that began twelve years ago was a blank book, and we were all eager to fill the pages. We will always look back on the days we spent from preschool to high schoolthose days long ago, the world seemed so innocent; however, soon enough, we became aware that real life is different, and we began to face some of the many experiences of adulthood. Capitalismis an economic and political system in which a country s trade and industry that is controlled by private owners for profit. Capitalism is the heart and soul of America s economy. A capitalist economy can take a person from rags to riches or from riches to rags depending on the path that is taken by one s free will. The speech supported the ideals of socialism by suggesting equal distribution of wealth throughout the nation. The Pros And Cons Of Open Border Policy Modern day America has put strict boundaries on immigration, but during the 18th and 19th centuries, an open immigration policy was encouraged and accepted. The concept of America as the land of dreamers and new beginnings is now lost due to recent border policies. An open border policy should be implemented in America as it upholds the Constitution, benefits the domestic and international economy, and maintains ethical standards for preserving human life. Border restrictions and confinements on migration put the very principles of the constitution at stake. Many proponents of closed borders utilize the Constitution s Foreign Commerce Clause , located in Article 1, to support their argument that Congress has been granted power over migration. According to Ilya Somin, a law professor at George Mason University, the clause supposedly gives Congress control over migration and border policies. Despite this supposition, the Foreign Commerce Clause is merely the realization of its name: it only grants Congress power over commerce between foreign entities. The term commerce implies economic transactions and consequently the movement of commodities, in this case, international movement of commodities. While manual labor can be considered a commodity, immigration itself is not only the movement of manual labor. Immigration is the motion of hope and humanity, a movement in pursuit of the American dream. This may be represented in manual labor, but immigration is not only that, it ... However, most of these accounts are based on the role which children play in taking care of their parents. However, little has been said about the role of grandchildren as a resource for ailing grandparents. The role grandparents play in raising grandchildren is also well researched but the reverse has not been studied significantly. According to Barusch s thesis caring for the frail elderly; familysupport, services and care management the role of grandchildren as caregivers for grandparents is not entirely clear. The thesis claims that although grandchildren are willing to give care to ill grandparents, they are more likely to receive aid than give it. Moreover, the thesis claims that grandchildren might be more demanding than resourceful. This paper will show that in the event of great need grandchildren may prove to be important caregivers. It is universal that children take care of their parents in one way or another when they reach old age; it is also universal that spouses take care of each other in old age. However, it seems that caregiving for the elderly beyond the role of children depends on cultural contexts. In collectivist cultures of Asia for instance, grandchildren and other extended family contribute heavily in taking care of the elderly. • 29. Discrimination And Discrimination America s prison incarceration rate has increased by over 600%. This outlandish statistic leaves America with the largest incarceration rate in the world. (Pager 2003) As of right now, one third of the population has a criminal record of some sort (Barraza 2016). The issue of incarceration doesn t stop with alarming numbers, however. A damaging amount of stigma is attached to those that have a criminal record. Having a record essentially becomes an automatic stamp of dismissal from American society; you are barred from, or severely limited in your ability to, gain meaningful employment, pay for higher education, or, in some cases, be banned from housing altogether. In 2016, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced that they would now be expanding the protections of the Fair Housing Act to restrict the blanket denial of housing to those with criminal records (2016). To better understand the content of this newer policy, the social conditions that made it necessary, and the impact it can have on inequality, having an understanding of sociological concepts such as approaches to community based discrimination, de facto segregation, steering practices, total discrimination, and the benefits of integration is essential. The Fair Housing Act of 1968 was passed to prevent the same discrimination we seem to be suffocating in today. The purpose of the act was to make it unlawful to deny access to housing based on the race, color, religion, or national origin (Yinger 1999). Later, the act would be amended to included protected parties such as disabled people, for example. Almost 50 years after the original act was signed into law, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is making a change to expand, or at least specifically acknowledge and included, those that have a criminal record. The press release made by a department representative explicitly states, Under this standard, a facially neutral policy or practice that has a discriminatory effect violates the Act if it is not supported by a legally sufficient justification. Thus, where a policy or practice that restricts access to housing on the basis of criminal history has a disparate impact on individuals of a particular race, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Punishment has been a part of society for many years and people are divided on the punishment concept. Child rearing is viewed by some as a form of punishment and some states just as California has debated that spanking is illegal (Cherrington, 2007). Spanking being a form of punishment is viewed also an effective and timely way to alter behavior. Some studies reveal without punishment homes, schools, and the communities will decay. The big question is if punishment works and if it does works how can it be proven. Punishment and its effect have been researched and studied through child rearing, work place management, and in the field of criminology(Cherrington, 2007). An example of punishment in the work place would be placing an employee on probation for excessive tardiness, grounding a teenager for not cleaning his or her room, or sentencing a criminal offender to prisonfor committing a crime. ... For goals to be truly useful, they must be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely ( Siegel Yacht, 2009). As personal circumstances change and the economy as a whole also changes, there is the need to make or plan goals flexible that can easily adjust according to each situation. This paper will use the S.M.A.R.T planning model to evaluate Alice s goals of; pay off student loan, buy a house and save for children s education, accumulate assets, retire, and travel around the world in a sailboat. • 40. Anyone Lived In A Pretty How Town Essay In his poem, anyone lived in a pretty how town, E. E. Cummings asserts that children will be born and raised to all be the same, with no individuality, then grow into busy adults who cared for anyone not at all, and perhaps one day get married, live their lives, and die, still with nevers, or an unfulfilled bucket list. It is through the use of repetition, foreshadowing, and figurative language that Cummings conveys a mood of sad inevitability as he explains how this lifestyle repeats itself in cycles and how death will come to everyone, all while they live their lives in a society that might be pretty, but which lacks any real sense of community and individuality. In the book Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass written by himself, Douglass writes about his experiences as a slave in the 1800 s. In the beginning of the book, he explains that he does not know his age because most slaves are not allowed to know their age. Douglass recalls the memory of his aunt getting tied and whipped until she was covered in blood at a very young age. He reveals to us that slaves only get extremely limited allowances throughout a year. Children barely get any clothing to wear, while all of them just get barely enough food to survive, He also says that slaves have to lie half the time to avoid getting whipped and beaten. This book gives us a real insight on how bad slavery was, how Douglass coped with it, and eventually how he escapes from it later in the book. Douglass uses persuasive language to show the true colors of slavery, and he uses his own experiences of being a slave himself to his advantage by giving us accounts of his life as a slave. In this essay, I want to focus on the truth, why slaves have to lie their way out of certain situations, and go more in depth of how Douglass language is highly persuasive to the abolitionists of that time. I want to focus on one specific part in this essay, a part that is very descriptive, persuasive, and analyze deep into the text. Religion is often difficult to identify or define because it overlaps on many different boundaries in human experience. This complex phenomenon has led many theorists to attempt to form a cohesive definition, however, every theory has its limitations thus making this task utterly impossible to complete. Religion can also resolve matters on the private and public sector such as issues regarding life and death, love and sex, authority and freedom. The current version was organized in a way that scientists could easily identify trends like density, melting/boiling points, ionization energy, electronegativity, and atomic mass. It was bad enough that her bronzed, nubile body was marred by the grime and dirt that seemed to infest every spot upon the floor of the locker room. Looking at the photo, she was pleased at how easily Ava had given in, a wide grin on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As a day in a life of nuns are constructed around service within the chapel because by joining a convent or nunnery, nuns have to make a choice to devote their life to God. Religion has influenced the life of a nun. A lot of convents do have its own particular daily timetable for a nun as many do the following similarly: the first day of services 02.00: Matins Laud After Matins Laud, nuns would go back to bed and would get up again at first light.
