ways. They have similar tones with different executions, Both convey the theme of loss though one
feels more like a story and the other more like a speech, and both were written in the aftermath of a

Why Canadian Prohibition Failed
Canada experimented with banning alcohol during the early 20th century. The movement grew out of
the earlier Temperance Movement, which steadily grew in popularity during the mind 19th century.
There are four reasons why prohibition ultimately failed in Canada: (1) it was not really enforced; (2)
it was not truly effective; (3) a shift in popular thought; (4) and loss of public support. (Idea of

This motive was to follow into Canada s age of prohibition, thus it is important to mention why the
CTA failed. After the CTA was passed alcohol transactions reduced very little (Citation Warsh). The
Royal Commission on the Effects of the Liquor Traffic in 1895 noted that: The Scott Act [the CTA],
although in force over a large portion of the Province [New Brunswick], is in reality not enforced in
most of the countries, and... in almost every part of the province [New Brunswick] a plentiful supply
is to be had by those who desire to get it.(Citation on 145)
Meaning, that something must have been going on in New Brunswick for there to be such blatant
disregard for the law, but what was it? Well, in the city of Moncton, New Brunswick there is a good
example of the problem like minded law enforcement and crooked bureaucrats. The city of Moncton
used the CTA to issue prohibitory law concerning alcohol in 1879. At this time, like elsewhere in New
Brunswick, liquor trade was still inexistence. In Moncton s case, though the bureaucrats were accused
of allowing the trade to occur so that they could make money, for the city and maybe for themselves,
off the fines for liquor violations. This came to a head in 1881 when a bootlegger was fined based off
the cities prohibition law. The bootlegger, eventually, petitioned New Brunswick s Supreme Court.
