They also need to raise the price point for a single transaction. This combination of higher margins
and higher price points increases the contribution the amount of money that goes to covering fixed and
operating costs generated from every transaction.
That s a tall order. But my experience leading businesses in Africa, India, and other emerging
economies shows that it can be done. In this article, I will show how to build a margin boosting
platform that can help companies solve the cost problems inherent in bringing needed products and
services to very poor markets. A few companies are already using aspects of a platform to improve
their profitability prospects, and S.C. Johnson, the householdproducts maker, has launched an
integrated margin boosting platform for selling insecticide in rural Ghana as part of an effort to reduce
malaria infection there. Initial results for that venture show the financials moving in the right
direction.

Financial Statement Analysis Of Jet Blue Airways...
Financial Statement Analysis Jet Blue Airways Corporation (JBLU)
Summary of the Company
Jet Blue Airways Corporation, a passenger transportation company that provides 93 destinations in 28
states in the United States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the U.S.
Virgin Islands, and 19 countries in the Caribbean and Latin America (Yahoo Finance). Jet Blue
Airways Corporation is based in Long Island City, New York.
Financial Ratio Analysis
After computing the current ratio of Jet Blue Airways, there was a decrease from 2014 of 0.62 to 0.60
in 2015. This was a result of an increase of current liabilities that superseded the increase of current
assets. The decrease in ratio between the respective years denote the inability for the company to pay
off its most recent debts within a short period of time. Jet Blue current ratio falls extremely below the
average among the airline industry of 0.81 (CSI Market). In 2015, Jet Blue Airways acid test ratio
showed a slight increase to 0.45 from its former 0.44 rate in 2014. Consequently, the company s
increased ability to pay off its debt with its most recent assets. Combined the acid test ratio and the
current ratio, shows that the even though Jet Blue had a decrease in the current ratio, is had a much
higher immediate liquidity status due to the fact of a 52% increase in short term investments. In
addition, Jet Blue Airways experienced a 9% increase from 43.7 to 47.2 in its ability to convert its
receivables

The Prelude Essay
In all of the poems, I have a deeper personal connection to the poem from The Prelude, Book
Thirteen, Line 142 et seq, especially from lines 18 30. To me, these lines mean that school only
teaches what is in a book, not about the world around us. In sense, we learn more outside of school
than inside of school. Before I attended Brooklyn Tech, I went to King Collegiate Charter. In the fifth
grade, the student population in my middle school is 100% African American, and the staff population
was 99.9% Caucasian. In 2010, in New York Times, my middle school was named the most
segregated school in New York City. As a result, I never was taught how to interact with different
races and cultures. The school never expose us to cultural diffusion. On my first day of Brooklyn
Tech, I was shocked by the huge amount of cultural and racial groups there. Then, I interacted with the

Biomagnification In Australia
It is known worldwide that Australia is home to many rich and vibrant marine ecosystems, however,
this could all soon be over. A silent killer is on our shores and is taking over many marine ecosystems
at a rapid rate. What is this silent killer you ask? Well it s none other than the process of
biomagnification! Now you may all be wondering what this actually is and why it is causing all of this
panic? Biomagnification is simply the increasing concentration of a substance, such as chemicals, in
the tissues of organisms at higher level within a food chain(R. K. Mehra, 2001, pp. 5335 5338).
Biomagnification occurs because the chemical is absorbed faster than it can be used or the organism
cannot break it for use (M. Barwick, 2003, pp. 471 502). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rain washes the pesticides that are used in our Australians households and then become run off in
drains and sewers. They then make their way into nearby water bodies, wether that be creeks, rivers or
even oceans and settle within the soil by sticking to small particles, including tiny living organisms
like phytoplankton (M. Barwick, 2003, pp. 471 502). Small fish consume these tiny organisms, which
may then be eaten by a larger organism and this continues until the top order consumer is reached. The
concentration that first began in the phytoplankton and has multiplied sufficiently as it moves along
the food chain. The amount of the pesticide has reached a highly toxic level in the top order predator,
whether that is birds or even humans. As a result of the biomagnification of pesticides and other
chemical the marine environment and the organisms that live within it are heavily affected. The build
up of heavy metals, for example, it interferes with the formation of red blood cells, creates liver and
kidney implications and forms reproductive defects in many organisms. This hinders an organism s
ability to survive and reproduce and can create a decline in species

Samuel Beckett¨s Novel Molloy and Its Particular Style,...
There s no question Samuel Beckett was deeply influenced by the avant garde style of fellow Irish
novelist James Joyce when writing Molloy. Both Beckett and Joyce allude to the classics (Dante s
Purgatorio and Homer s Odyssey, respectively) and both extensively employ interior monologue to
often similar effect. Even so, Beckett, ever aware of the shadow cast by his former mentor, also
attempted to eschew Joycean tendencies in his works, as demonstrated in Molloy. Here, not only does
Beckett entirely deny readers the luxury of context, he deconstructs the very fundamentals of novel
and narrative. Distinctly metafictional in form, Molloy self consciously underlines its own artificiality
and, on a universal level, that intrinsic to fiction itself. Like the titular allusion of Joyce s Ulysses, the
two protagonists in Molloy also embark on a voyage of sorts, albeit the nature of which is even more
so internalized. As a result, there s not much by way of plot or setting, which remain intentionally
hazy. Still, the novel moves, sometimes at a dizzying pace, in part to its frequent digressions and
elision of so many vital answers: Are Molloy and Moran the same character? Is it possible Molloy
may not even be a person altogether but rather an alter ego of Moran? Is Molloy a state of mind? What
exactly does it mean to be searching for Molloy ? These questions stem from the novel s vague
definition of physical space and time, leading some readers to interpret the novel s second

How To Write An Essay On A Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich
The book A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich has misery flowing from every nook and cranny, to the
point of exhaustion. But how could life really be like this? The answer to that is that the events in this
story are disturbingly accurate to real life. From before the beginning of World War II to years
following its end, camps known as Gulags existed for prisoners and political criminals. The
outstanding characteristics of these camps included extreme weather,
Reisz 2 poor sanitation and medical facilities (if any at all), meager food that was often already
spoiled, back breaking labor and guards that would strike a prisoner dead if it struck their fancy. Life
in these camps was not easy and left those who survived completely scarred and broken (Gulag).
These camps were instituted in the 1930 s and were a massive operation until the death of Stalin in
1953. At that point the number and size of camps were greatly reduced but they continued to operate
in that smaller scale until Gorbachev rose to power and put a stop to the injustice (Gulag). Obviously,
these camps are compared to to the Nazi concentration camps because they were started around the
same time and had similar basic points of emphasis. Anyone that had a different opinion or set of
personal beliefs was sent to these camps in an extremely similar way to the concentration camps. They
also both showed a similar level of inhuman brutality that could on be carried out by the most
heartless people (Gulag). As time went on, there became a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Intellectual Disability Definition
How has the label of Mental Retardation been used to discriminate against people and do you think
the term, Intellectual Disability would have a different connotation?
Society has a different intake in everything, as individual we are expected to do certain things, live
certain way, and be certain way. Occasionally, when we fail to live to these expectations we are often
excluded from certain groups and may not regarded as typical human beings. The term Mental
Retardation might be the perfect fit when it comes to describing the slow development of the brain;
however, this term has a bad connotation. In the early years the word retardation was used as a
replacement for word such as idiot, imbecile, morons and cretin (Hingston, 2011). Many

Accounting And Financial Methods And Tools
Firm valuation relates to accounting in that it uses a combination of both accounting and financial
methods and tools. Some of the accounting tools used includes the valuation of firms assets, valuation
of a firm s profit and loss and also the valuation of a firm s obligations, which are liabilities. Just like
accounting, firm valuation process follows defined steps so as to arrive at the correct value of the firm
that is free from errors. There are five steps involved; preparation and planning, adjusting the financial
statements, choosing the business valuation methods, applying the selected valuation method and
finally reaching the firm valuation conclusion. (Candon, 78). On the first step, the most valuable thing
is to determine the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the determination of how and under what conditions of measuring the firm s value, the next step
is the gathering of relevant data and information that impacts the firm value. (Howard, 97). Such data
include; steady earnings above the industry norm, good marketing plans, skilled and motivated staff,
and well documented financial and accounting statements and well detailed business procedures that
are written down.
Some of the gathered data such as the firm s historical financial statements are adjusted so as to
prepare the inputs required for the firm s valuation methods and hence it leads us to the second step.
The main financial statements required for the firm s valuation are the income statement and the
balance sheet that are produced by the accounting process. This further shows the relationship
between firm valuation and accounting. The best way to value a firm with a historical approach would
be looking at the historical statements, income statement and balance sheet. Smaller firms should be
looked at the last three to five years while larger firms should have a longer period to check. Due to
the fact that, business owners have considerable discretion in how they use the firm s assets and also
what expenses and income they recognize, this rise the need to adjust the firm s historical records.
Constructing an accurate relationship between the required firm s assets and

The Environmental Impacts Of The Fishing Industry In Tanzania
Introduction
The actions of those who benefit most from capitalism, result in the release of toxic byproducts into
the environments of those they capitalize off of. The people of Tanzania and their natural resources are
a prime example of exploitation. They live in impoverish communities while planes gather Tanzanian
resources and flee to the affluent countries in Europe. Tanzania contributes to the flourishing of the
European economy while dwindling its own, its environmental health, and the health of its people.
Although commentators state the fishing industry is of great assistance to Tanzania, through job
provision, that is just a glorified farce needed by bureaucrats to feel less cruel while continuing to
contribute to an industry truly meant to gut Tanzania for its resources. The most noteworthy
environmental impacts, as a result of the fishing industry, are the various types of pollution and
degradation of the environment, more specifically the aquatic ecosystem. While many environmental
issues are uncovered as the result of exporting Nile Perch, environmental degradation and pollution
are causes for greatest concern.
Degradation of the ecosystem Lake Victoria was known as one of the greatest and largest lakes in
Africa. Although after understanding the outcomes of the fishing industry, in Tanzania, such a title
should be revoked. The lake had an abundant selection of fish calculating up to 400 species. The vast
amount of fishes each had a job. For example, the

Vo2max Jump Rope Experiment
This study examined the effects of jump rope training on maximal oxygen uptake (referred to as
VO2Max). Previous studies show that jumping rope can also be used to develop the coordination of
neuromuscular skills, muscle strength, and cardiovascular endurance. It burns calories and builds
strength in the upper and lower body (Duzgun, 2010, pg. 184). The researcher hypothesized that these
benefits of jump rope training would result in an increased VO2Max. Before testing, a single
participant took a treadmill VO2Max pretest. The participant followed a jump rope training schedule

The Roman Empire And The Byzantine Empire
The Byzantine Empire was the successor of the Roman Empire during the time period of Late
Antiquity and the Medieval Ages. The Byzantine Empire was also called Eastern Roman Empire, so
this proves that it was a continuation of the Roman Empire, but they were speaking Greek, and did not
forget about the Greek tradition. According to Browning, the physicians during the Byzantine Empire
like Oreibasios, who was the Emperor Julian s physician and friend , use the scientific and old version
of Greek medicine to treat patients, and this means that medical doctors did not forget about their
Greek roots. Starting from Basil I, a Byzantine Emperor between 867 and 886, the Byzantine Empire
entered its Golden Age, and according to Browning, Basil I established a very good Empire time that
would last two centuries with his precious energy and rules. After decades, this Golden Age began to
give place to decline because, according to Browning, within the eleventh century, the attitudes and
the thoughts that were primitive, spoilt, and lack of imagination of the future of the Empire began to
become strong among the aristocratic society, and this began to harm Byzantine s economic and
military power. This kind of harm to the centralized government of the Byzantine Empire did not
show itself as a poisonous snake till 1060 because the Empire could not function itself as usual.
Therefore, the enemies of the Byzantine Empire took an advantage of this weakness. Hungarians took

Santiago Dream On Meaning
Dream on by Aerosmith connects to Santiago and his recurring dream in the beginning of the story
starting on Page 6. Santiago deals with a recurring dream and he does not understand why he is having
it. This dream occurs every time Santiago sleeps under a sycamore tree that grows out of the ruins of a
church. In this dream a child tells Santiago to go after a treasure located by the Egyptian pyramids.
Santiago is confused by the message of the dream and goes to a gypsy woman to try and understand
the dream. She says that he should go to Egypt in pursuit of the treasure. This leads to Santiago
meeting a magical man who turns out to be the King of Salem. He says that going to Egypt is Santiago
s personal legend and he should set off for his journey tomorrow. This journey leads to Santiago
arriving in Tangier and a robber taking all of the money Santiago brought in his journey towards the
Egyptian pyramids. This leaves Santiago by himself as he now has to find a way to push through
adversity and get to his destination. Dream on is about following your dreams and aspirations in life
by following your journey. Dream until your dreams come true is a line highlighted in the song that
captures the purpose of following your dreams. It is about your want to be someone and to accomplish
what you are supposed to in life. Santiago s purpose is to follow his personal legend by following the

A Brief Description of the Concept of Courtly Love
For a brief description of the concept of courtly love , a few characteristics must be highlighted.
Courtly love appeared in Provence (southern France) in the eleventh century. It consists on the
expression of love in its most sincere, chivalric and noble form. It tended to be chaste and adulterous.
It was also secret and, in general, always took place between the members of the higher classes of
society. Andreas Capellanus defines it in The Art of Courtly Love as the pure love which binds
together the hearts of two lovers with every feeling of delight. This kind consists on the contemplation
of the mind and the affection of the heart; it goes as far as the kiss and the embrace and the modest
contact with the nude lover, omitting the final solace, for that is not permitted for those who wish to
love purely. [...] That is called mixed love which gets its effect from every delight of the flesh and
culminates in the final act of Venus (p.122). In Capellanus definition, it seems to me, that the previous
elements mentioned are placed out of the game of love, as long as we consider courtly love to be
expressed by the total submission of a young man towards his lady. The fulfilment of the souls in
courtly love can rarely be obtained, because there is no equality in the relationship of the individuals.
The lover s love is immanently pure, genuine in essence, but the beloved is usually characterized as
unachievable because her self is so perfect that there is not much the lover can

Examples Of Moral Truths In Hamlet
Hamlet moral truths Hamlet has shown there are many moral truths that we can pattern our life after.
He has had a difficult life but he has taught many things that we can add to our life and in this essay,
you will see some of those moral truths. Neither a borrower or nor a lender be. For loan oft loses both
itself and friend. And borrowing dulleth edge of husbandry. This above all, to thine own self be true.
And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man. (page 22 Hamlet) He
teaches hear that we do not borrow or lend what we have if we do the we may lose a friend. It can
cause problems with you and your friend. Hence, what does it mean to be true to yourself? Can you
fudge really, what you are saying or do you have to be completely honest with everyone. Including

What Is The True Meaning Of Billie Holiday s Song Strange...
The author of strange fruit was Abel Meeropol. He was an english teacher, and social activist located
in New York. He grew up when lynching and racism heavily existed. The origin of his poem Strange
Fruit came from him seeing a photograph of someone being graphically lynched. The image
reminisced through his head, which eventually lead him to writing his poem.
Billie Holiday was known for her beautiful voice and lyrics to her songs.
After listening to the song Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday, produced by Abel
Meeropol, it gave me a depressed type of feeling. Her voice it gave the lyrics such a dramatic mood by
the way she sung the words. She drug her words to make the listener feel the pain behind the lyrics.

Them hanging from trees, dripping in blood because they have been wrongly done by whites. The
most important things about this song to me, were that they disguised the true meaning behind the
words. It was not directly said they were talking about lynching, but when someone listened closely,
they would have been able to tell, especially at that time. Also, the fact that Billie Holiday sang the
song, was very important.
Her voice, and way of making music sound, gives off the exact mood/tone that is felt by the idea of
lynching. Lastly, the end of the song, the lyrics is one of the most important pieces. To refer to the
whites/racists as crows, and let it be known they are scavengers was very iconic. This means, people
know they are up to no good, but they have so much power and authority, that just like crows, they can
fly away , or not be persecuted for their actions. Life during the time this song was published, was
very difficult for African Americans. Whites could still treat them however they wanted to, and get
away with their actions. Although, work was being done behind the scenes, a lot of African Americans
still struggled with their rights within the United

Ineffective Argument in Jessica Statsky s Essay, Children...
Jessica Statsky, in her essay, Children need to Play, Not Compete attempts to refute the common belief
that organized sports are good for children. She sees organized sports not as healthy pass times for
children, but as onerous tasks that children do not truly enjoy. She also notes that not only are
organized sports not enjoyable for children, they may cause irreparable harm to the children, both
emotionally and physically. In her thesis statement, Statsky states, When overzealous parents and
coaches impose adult standards on children s sports, the result can be activities that are neither
satisfying nor beneficial to children (627). While this statement is strong, her defense of it is weak.
One of the assumptions Statsky makes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Children who play these games want to win. Winning may not be the most important reason for
playing a game, but children do not play to lose, either. They are elated when they win and either
somber, angry or good humored when they lose, just as adults are. Statsky then makes another faulty
assumption. She writes Winning and losing may be an inevitable part of adult life, but they should not
be part of childhood (Statsky 629). This assumes that winning and losing are already not part of
childhood. What child has ever gotten to full adulthood without ever knowing the disappointment of
loss or the joy of winning? To assume that children are psychologically incapable of handling
competition and the occasional inevitable loss is to severely underestimate children s abilities. Statsky
also uses the all too common phenomenon of the overzealous parent or coach to support her thesis.
She cites examples of parental brawls and coaches who rely on intimidation rather than good coaching
to push their teams to victory (Statsky 629 30). Statsky seems to be saying that parents and coaches
can behave in an obnoxious and even violent manner when they are part of organized sports for
children, and that this behavior is yet another indication that organized sports are not suitable for
children (629 30). This is a post hoc, ergo propter hoc fallacy. Though undoubtedly distressing for the
children involved in these games, adult misbehavior is not an indication

to increase the number of quality professionals. The changing market is in need of professionals who
are both knowledgeable and talented enough to deliver care to the underserved community of this
great country. Saint Francis University, is addressing this need by providing education to qualified
students to enable them to become future leaders. Saint Francis s addresses this national shortage by
advancing students problem solving skills and clinical knowledge, all the while maintaining a focus on
serving the community. My core values include servant leadership which means in everything I want
to do I want to be serving those around me. I have come to the conclusion, the only way to serve the
community in the fullest capacity is to first become educated on the needs of the community. To gain
understanding of what is required to serve this world, I took time volunteering in a nursing home as
therapy aide and working at podiatrist office. Although these experiences can be limiting, the
information gained in serving people is invaluable. Working with people to meet basic needs has
shown me the importance of humbly approaching all scenarios and patients. I realize our personal
growth should never slow down and we should never stop learning. I have been gifted with the ability

Theme Of Bravery In IM Not Scared
The film Life is Beautiful directed by Roberto Benigni and Niccolò Ammaniti s film I m not Scared
explore the theme of bravery of their protagonists in their comparatively dissimilar settings. The 1997
Italian film Life is Beautiful follows the life of a charming man who uses his humor to win over the
woman of his dreams and bravely save his family from the tragedy in Italy during the Second World
War. Also set in the late 1970s in rural southern Italy, the film I m not Scared encompasses
imprisonment and the developing friendship of Michele and Filippo who is kidnapped for ransom.
Filippo is chained up and hungry when Michelle discovers him in a pit near an abandoned house and
he helps the boy out. Bravery is prominently explored in both texts through dialogue, colour, and
setting.
Benigni and Ammaniti present bravery through the dialogue presented by the protagonists Guido and
Michele. The dialogue that Guido speaks reveals plenty about his personality and nature and gives the
audience a firm understanding of his character. The beginning of the film presents a lot of humor and
the audience is introduced to a fairytale like story. Guido constantly uses his wit and comedic nature to
impress his lover Dora, and often on their encounters he enthusiastically exclaims Buongiorno
Princess! By referring to Dora as a princess illustrates that Guido believes she is perfect and seeing as
he repeatedly says this phrase also conveys his ability to appear when least expected. Despite the
transition in the film to a completely different setting and situation, dialogue plays a key role in
communicating to the audience Guido s ability to lift the hopes and provide ongoing love and sacrifice
for those around him. When Guido and son Joshua are separated from Dora at the concentration camp
they shout Buongiorno Princess! into the microphone. A reaction shot is then used to show Dora s
familiarity with these words and her understanding that her husband and son are alive. The use of this
common greeting is effective in this film because it conveys that despite the sudden change of lifestyle
for Guido and his family, Guido s personality ensures his humor and devotion are expressed until the
very end of the film which shows

Accredited programme requirements were created from the Criminal Justice Act 2003 but in order to
understand how this came to be it is significant that the history and political context of the probation
service is understood.
The Probation of Offenders Act was established in 1907 and under this act the release if offenders into
the community under the control of probation officers were made official. The primary aim of the
probation was made clear under this act which was to advise, assist and befriend and it continued that
way until 1970 s. During this period it transformed into an agency concerned with casework,
diagnosis, and rehabilitation rather than the influence of personal character, psychological

However, research carried out in the 1990 s as part of what works movement identified that the most
successful sentences were those that attempted to change, not only the offender s behaviour but also
their attitude towards their offending (Hollin, 2007). This catalysed the push towards cognitive
behavioural approaches and by 1999 one especially important development was the establishment of
the Correctional Services Accreditation Panel, which quality assured probation and prison
programmes for rehabilitating offending. This technique brought an emphasis of individual
responsibility of an offender (Mair,2004). A criticism of this was the lack of attention of sociological
factors that can influence criminal behaviour.
Responsibility of offenders can be considered to have arose as part of the Just Deserts in which is
fundamental to it rational in two ways. First, the need to sentence individuals for the crime committed
rather than sociological or behavioural issue that may have been a factor in the offender committing
the crime. Secondly, under the concept of proportionality in which the sentence is proportionate to the
crime. At this point a very subtle difference in sentencing had an impact on the way probation was
viewed because non custodial sentences became recognised as an alternative to prison rather than an
alternative to punishment (Worrall, 2006). Thus, probation was regarded as a punishment in its own
right which is

The Death Of An Idol. A Day Like Any Other, A High School
The Death of an Idol
A day like any other, a high school student, Karissa Rider, tried to catch up on some much needed
sleep before her first period began. Too groggy to realize the effect of this event, she overheard the
gossip of the day. The previous day April 5, 1994, something happened that would change the life of
every music fan alive. Kurt Cobain, lead singer of the popular grunge band, Nirvana, had overdosed
on heroin and shot himself.
Cobain was only twenty seven when he committed suicide(Johnson). Frontman of Nirvana, what most
consider to be the greatest grunge band of all time, Cobain was a very important figure in the music
industry in the nineties and onward. He made several strides to push music further and change the ...

that both were widely recognized artists who changed the industry with their different stunning styles
that captured the hearts of many. Prince s recent death had affected Karissa similar to the way Cobain
might have if she was a bigger fan at the time of his death. The effect of Cobain s death truly set in
Karissa s mind thanks to a coworker who cared very much for the singer. A young high schoolkid,
Karissa valued having money so, during her junior year she worked a two jobs at the same time. Her
first job at a nursing home and her second at Jack In the Box, this is where she would finally realize
Cobain was more than just a regular old singer, although she would not fully appreciate his art and
abilities for years to come.
Rider describes a boy named Robert. Robert was one of her co workers at Jack In the Box, the only
difference, this boy was in love with Kurt Cobain. At the time Rider did not care much for Cobain and
could not truly see the effect he had until she saw Robert. Robert was so devastated by Cobain s death
he d acted as if, in Karissa s words, his own brother had died . Karissa

WHAT IS MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY?
Have you ever wondered what that little flower symbol is on your camera? Who said you had to be a
professional photographer to take extremely close photos? The Macro mode will surprise you with its
incredible features. Taking photos so extremely close to an object is like entering a different world in
photography. Macro photos bare a real uniqueness that no other genre of photography can show. The

The first lens creates the image and the second enlarges the object.
Tripod
Having a tripod is important in macro photography because it helps keep the camera stable while
being so close. This helps prevent the picture turning out blurry or unfocused.
7 steps on how to capture that perfect Macro shot
MACRO MODE
1. You will need to turn your camera on to macro mode . There should be a small symbol that looks
like a tulip flower on the settings that will switch it to macro. Doing this will change the zoom and
allow you to capture images at its actual size.
STABILITY
2. Set your tripod up in a position that is stable and not moveable. Macro photography requires no
camera movement and a lot of focus. The closer you get to the object, the more it will shake while
trying to take the picture. To avoid this, make sure your tripod is sturdy and will not shake.
LIGHTING
3. If there is not enough natural lighting or you re in a dark room, you will need to use flash or you can
make your own artificial lighting. You can create a golden effect by using gold tinfoil to reflect onto
the object. Natural lighting is always going to be a better option rather than using flash or artificial

Why Is Social Exchange Theory Important

would you say have left your life, even if they were extremely close to you at some point? It s a fact
that not all friendships last forever. One thing I ll always ask myself is, why is it that we stay

Social exchange theory studies the reciprocal action between two parties by looking at the costs and

Having a tumultuous background, the Native American history in itself should be respected, but there
seems to be a nuisance doing so. In the 1830 s, after removal policy failed to prevail, not only did
individual Indians remain, but native communities also struggled over the next century and a half to
carve out a place for themselves in the South (Perdue 3). Native American s were challenged to find a
place in the idealistic society, but their ritualistic culture was not fit for the United States. Further on,
they dealt with poverty, discrimination, and violence against their community. The history of
discrimination against the Native American community has been very controversial. For over 129
years, discrimination has been widely noticed specifically in the sport community. From the racial slur
of redskins or the identification of the Native American like in the Cleveland Indians baseball team,

Human Dominion and Separation from Nature
Other than Native American works, most of the works read for the class seemed to stem from or at
least were influenced by some vein of Christian thinking. This can t be helped because the western
world has been influenced by Christianity for centuries, and the foundational values still recognized in
this country in particular are protestant, even if they re not blatantly proclaiming the faith. In fact, we
even read through a few chapters of the Bible because the common theme and justification of human
dominion over nature stems from the primary story of the Bible in Genesis. This theme is often a
subject of great sadness or annoyance for nature writers like Wordsworth and Mary Oliver; while
authors like John Muir and Bill McKibben, whom do profess to the Christian faith, still see nature as
something spiritual because dominion means not just given authority, but also given the responsibility
for its protection. The first chapter of Genesis establishes humanity s place in God s creation. Verse 26
in particular; Then God said, Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let
them have dominion over the fish of the sea...and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.
The entire verse basically gives human authority over every genus on the planet, putting us at the top
of the food chain as it were (though in the Garden humans were forbade to eat meat). A lot of people
seem to see this verse as one of the causes of the human superiority

1920s And 1950s Similarities
The 1920s and 1950s both starts out different and ends on different circumstances. The 1920s started
out with a wrongful lawsuit and ended with and economic shutdown. The 1950s started out with
fighting in wars against communism and ended with and economic growth. Both eras were a lesson
for society. The 1920s and 1950s has many differences and similarities between each other. The 1920s
was a time of economic growth, inventions, and spending money. During the 1920s, America was
renamed as new society and new standard of living (Foner, 773). Little did society know was that the
1920s was the reason for the Great Depression in the 1929. This time era had a rough start because
there was a prohibition on manufacturing and selling alcohol (Foner, 742). There also an awakening of
what America was really like for the immigrants, for example, the convictions of two Italians,
Bartolomeo Vanzetti and Nicola Sacco. Vanzetti and Sacco were accused of partaking in an armed
robbery and murder of a security guard (Foner, 768). This raises about the corruption of the
government, and how it destabilized basic American freedom because these men were seen as threats
to the American Life (Foner, 769). There were no evidence against Sacco and Vanzetti, yet they still
got the death penalty (Foner, 769). The 1920s were also famous for the Jazz Age and Roaring

Sparta And Kallipolis An Analysis Of The Ideal Citizen

Writing Assignment 1: Sparta and Kallipolis an analysis of the ideal citizen
Over the course of history there have been several attempts at defining what it means to be the ideal
person, and by extension how to create an ideal society. In doing so, several characteristics are
generally defined, some of which are courage, moderation and self control. The concept of courage
has been fluid in its meaning but has been highly valued across ancient Greece. In this paper I will be
observing two societies and the ideals that they hold for generating better people, as well as what
values they would want to instil. One city is theoretical, and one real: Kallipolis, Socrates economic
city, the city that would essentially be the opposite of Athens if it were established, and Sparta.
Archidamus was a Spartan king who presided over a nation that prized military success and courage,
specifically andreas, or manly courage, above all else. In the beginning of Thucydides History of the
Peloponnesian war we find him trying to convince the Spartan war council not to wage war against
Athens. Spartans were concerned for their reputation as Corcyrans had been mocking them and their
apparent cowardice because of their inability to make quick decisions. King Archidamus argued that

Comparison of US Bill of Rights and The Canadian Charter...
BACKGROUND OF THE BILL OF RIGHTS
The United States Bill of Rights came into being as a result of a promise made by the Fathers of
Confederation to the states during the struggle for ratification of the Constitution in 1787 88. A great
number of the states made as a condition for their ratification, the addition of amendments, which
would guarantee citizens protection of their rights against the central government. Thus, we have a
rather interesting situation in which the entrenchment of a bill of rights in the American Constitution
was done by the virtual demand of the states, they themselves fearing a central government which was
not legally constrained and restricted as far as its powers were concerned.
The resulting Bill of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The entrenchment of rights in the Canadian Constitution comes after long experience with a system of
parliamentary supremacy. The American judicial tradition of treating the written constitution as
fundamental law cannot have an instant Canadian counterpart. Thus, it does not follow that the
Canadian courts will necessarily claim a role comparable to that of courts in the United States, nor is it
clear that the representative bodies in Canada would tolerate such a judicial assertion of power.
Opposition by government bodies to the Charter have already occurred in Canada, where the Parti
Quebecois government of Quebec invoked the notwithstanding the Canadian Charter of Rights and
Freedoms clause for the purpose of protecting their language laws from attack under the charter. This
report will attempt to note some of the common and distinctive features of the text of the two
constitutions as well as to how they differ.
Three major classes of rights are protected by both the Canadian and United States constitutions.
Freedom of expression, religion, and assembly are safeguarded in part I section 2 of the Canadian
Constitution Act, 1982, and in the First Amendment of the American Constitution. The Legal Rights
listed in sections 7 14 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, protecting criminal suspects
and defendants by various procedural safeguards, are paralleled by American rights to have counsel

Honor as the Theme in Homer’s The Iliad Essay
There are different forms and examples of exemplary and classic literature which have been deemed
as significant works that are highly esteemed worldwide. These examples of literature would awe the
world with how much literary skill they entailed when they were composed and written: attention to
details as to formation of characters, the most crafty of plots, the most eloquent speeches and lines, the
most astounding of twists of scenes, and most of all, the most universal and meaningful of themes.
The theme of any literary work is what makes it great as it should be able to encompass the immense
diversity of the world and as it would be able to transcend the boundaries of religion, age, race,
gender, etc. Two examples of this great and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While this circumstance may be easy enough to understand, such setting or background in the plot
actually entails more history: Even before Paris was born, a prophecy was carried out that the
handsome prince would cause the destruction of Troy; thus, King Priam and his queen banished the
baby to be raised in the wilderness. Later on, as a shepherd, he encountered the three goddesses, Hera,
Pallas Athene, and Aphrodite, and set the motion of what would be the war that extinguished the
Trojan line Paris was to decide who is the most beautiful of the goddesses. Each goddess tried to bribe
him with promises of power, riches, fame, and glory, but it was Aphrodite who succeeded in the end as
she promised Paris that he can have the most beautiful mortal, Helen. This simple arrangement would
then serve as the catalyst of a war that would kill thousands of Trojans and Greeks as soon it is
revealed that Paris has stolen Helen and the gods and goddesses of Olympus have each taken sides on
the war which would further complicate the lives of the people of Troy and Greece. (Buck Jr. , 11 12)
The Iliad opens in the predicament of the Greeks who have somehow incurred the wrath of the gods. It
is here that Agamemnon, supreme commander of the Grecian army, demand that Achilles give up his
prize (Briseis) to replace his own prize (Chrysies) which he has to give up to appease the gods.

Arguments Against School Uniforms
District 230 should not mandate a school uniform policy because of the following: school uniforms go
against our rights, raise questions of equality, and they rely on anti democratic principles. (MP1)To
start, school uniforms go against rights in the first amendment like: freedom of religion, and freedom
of speech. (EV)Robson states in his Viewpoint, ¨Symbols or words on clothes are most likely to clear
the speech hurdle; they will then be evaluated against the disruption standard articulated by the
Supreme Court in the watershed case Tinker vs. Des Moines Independent Community School District.
Tinker involved students wearing black armbands to protest the war in Vietnam. Borrowing from civil
rights cases, the court decided for the protesters: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(CO)Likewise, If district d230 decided to make uniforms required, then history may repeat itself, and
our speech rights may be censored as students due to the uniform dress code. (MP2)Furthermore, I
disagree the d230 uniform policy because they raise questions of equality. (EV)Robson also states in
his Viewpoint, ¨School dress codes also raise questions of equality. Gender specific guidelines for hair,
jewelry and cosmetics are being tested, especially by transgender students. Bans on saggy pants or
Afro puffs are applied to all students but can be seen as racially biased. Outlawing sweat pants or
frayed garments might well have a disproportionate effect, depending on a family s economic status,
although this argument would be more persuasive to a school board making policy than to a court
applying constitutional doctrine¨ (Robson). (AN)Schools are putting gender specific guidelines on
things like hair, jewelry, and cosmetics. Schools are also putting bans on things like afros, and saggy
pants, which can be seen as racial discrimination. (CO)If district d230 decided to mandate uniforms,

Internal And External Conflicts In The Time Of The Doves
Mercè Rodoreda s immersive novel, The Time of the Doves, presents numerous realistic conflicts and
their effects on an ordinary citizen. Natalia, the protagonist, is challenged with several internal and
external conflicts that range from an inability to express herself to a war fueled famine. Rodoreda uses
personal experience, as well as knowledge of the typical female role during the Spanish Civil War to
add a personal outlook on the conflicts she presents. Natalia s internal conflicts are compelling, and
can be applied to a large portion of women, in the past and today. As for the external conflict, Natalia s
sufferings with the effects of war can be applied on a cultural level to most of Spain, during the Civil
war, and universally to any war struck country.
Throughout the novel Natalia is challenged with several internal conflicts, many of which originate
from external conflict with her husband, Quimet. Natalia is a meek, mild, young woman in the
beginning of the novel, It was hard for me to say no if someone asked me to do something (15).
Quimet juxtaposes Natalia s personality in almost every way, he is obsessive, possessive, and
controlling, ...and said if I wanted to be his wife I had to start liking everything he liked (22). Quimet
persuades her to marry him and leave her fiancé, Pere. He often challenges Natalia s confidence and
persuades her to do and agree to things she is uncomfortable with, creating internal conflicts for
Natalia s inability to protest or decline. For instance, Natalia does not want Quimet to build the
dovecote and raise the doves, but does not possess the adequate confidence to voice her opinion.
Natalia is generally unable to convey her feelings of rage and discontent to the other characters, she
often remarks on her difficulty to verbally express herself to the audience.
Many factors of Natalia s life also create external conflict, most prominently the famine caused by the
war, she struggles to keep her children fed and is plagued with guilt, I had two mouths to feed and
nothing to put in them. I can t describe how sad it was (134). Natalia is eventually forced to make
drastic decisions to try to spare her children, including sending her son, Antoni, to a children s

In this article, I will show how to build a margin boosting platform that can help companies solve the cost problems inherent in bringing needed products and services to very poor markets. A few companies are already using aspects of a platform to improve their profitability prospects, and S.C. • 7. Biomagnification In Australia It is known worldwide that Australia is home to many rich and vibrant marine ecosystems, however, this could all soon be over. A silent killer is on our shores and is taking over many marine ecosystems at a rapid rate. What is this silent killer you ask? Well it s none other than the process of biomagnification! Now you may all be wondering what this actually is and why it is causing all of this panic? Biomagnification is simply the increasing concentration of a substance, such as chemicals, in the tissues of organisms at higher level within a food chain(R. K. Mehra, 2001, pp. 5335 5338). Biomagnification occurs because the chemical is absorbed faster than it can be used or the organism cannot break it for use (M. Barwick, 2003, pp. 471 502). ... They then make their way into nearby water bodies, wether that be creeks, rivers or even oceans and settle within the soil by sticking to small particles, including tiny living organisms like phytoplankton (M. Barwick, 2003, pp. 471 502). Small fish consume these tiny organisms, which may then be eaten by a larger organism and this continues until the top order consumer is reached. The concentration that first began in the phytoplankton and has multiplied sufficiently as it moves along the food chain. The amount of the pesticide has reached a highly toxic level in the top order predator, whether that is birds or even humans. As a result of the biomagnification of pesticides and other chemical the marine environment and the organisms that live within it are heavily affected. The build up of heavy metals, for example, it interferes with the formation of red blood cells, creates liver and kidney implications and forms reproductive defects in many organisms. • 8. Samuel Beckett¨s Novel Molloy and Its Particular Style,... There s no question Samuel Beckett was deeply influenced by the avant garde style of fellow Irish novelist James Joyce when writing Molloy. Both Beckett and Joyce allude to the classics (Dante s Purgatorio and Homer s Odyssey, respectively) and both extensively employ interior monologue to often similar effect. Even so, Beckett, ever aware of the shadow cast by his former mentor, also attempted to eschew Joycean tendencies in his works, as demonstrated in Molloy. Here, not only does Beckett entirely deny readers the luxury of context, he deconstructs the very fundamentals of novel and narrative. Distinctly metafictional in form, Molloy self consciously underlines its own artificiality and, on a universal level, that intrinsic to fiction itself. Like the titular allusion of Joyce s Ulysses, the two protagonists in Molloy also embark on a voyage of sorts, albeit the nature of which is even more so internalized. As a result, there s not much by way of plot or setting, which remain intentionally hazy. Still, the novel moves, sometimes at a dizzying pace, in part to its frequent digressions and elision of so many vital answers: Are Molloy and Moran the same character? Is it possible Molloy may not even be a person altogether but rather an alter ego of Moran? Is Molloy a state of mind? What exactly does it mean to be searching for Molloy ? These questions stem from the novel s vague definition of physical space and time, leading some readers to interpret the novel s second ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. How To Write An Essay On A Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich The book A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich has misery flowing from every nook and cranny, to the point of exhaustion. But how could life really be like this? The answer to that is that the events in this story are disturbingly accurate to real life. From before the beginning of World War II to years following its end, camps known as Gulags existed for prisoners and political criminals. The outstanding characteristics of these camps included extreme weather, Reisz 2 poor sanitation and medical facilities (if any at all), meager food that was often already spoiled, back breaking labor and guards that would strike a prisoner dead if it struck their fancy. Life in these camps was not easy and left those who survived completely scarred and broken (Gulag). These camps were instituted in the 1930 s and were a massive operation until the death of Stalin in 1953. At that point the number and size of camps were greatly reduced but they continued to operate in that smaller scale until Gorbachev rose to power and put a stop to the injustice (Gulag). Obviously, these camps are compared to to the Nazi concentration camps because they were started around the same time and had similar basic points of emphasis. Anyone that had a different opinion or set of personal beliefs was sent to these camps in an extremely similar way to the concentration camps. They also both showed a similar level of inhuman brutality that could on be carried out by the most heartless people (Gulag). As time went on, there became a ... Some of the gathered data such as the firm s historical financial statements are adjusted so as to prepare the inputs required for the firm s valuation methods and hence it leads us to the second step. The main financial statements required for the firm s valuation are the income statement and the balance sheet that are produced by the accounting process. This further shows the relationship between firm valuation and accounting. The best way to value a firm with a historical approach would be looking at the historical statements, income statement and balance sheet. Smaller firms should be looked at the last three to five years while larger firms should have a longer period to check. Due to the fact that, business owners have considerable discretion in how they use the firm s assets and also what expenses and income they recognize, this rise the need to adjust the firm s historical records. • 12. The Environmental Impacts Of The Fishing Industry In Tanzania Introduction The actions of those who benefit most from capitalism, result in the release of toxic byproducts into the environments of those they capitalize off of. The people of Tanzania and their natural resources are a prime example of exploitation. They live in impoverish communities while planes gather Tanzanian resources and flee to the affluent countries in Europe. Tanzania contributes to the flourishing of the European economy while dwindling its own, its environmental health, and the health of its people. Although commentators state the fishing industry is of great assistance to Tanzania, through job provision, that is just a glorified farce needed by bureaucrats to feel less cruel while continuing to contribute to an industry truly meant to gut Tanzania for its resources. The most noteworthy environmental impacts, as a result of the fishing industry, are the various types of pollution and degradation of the environment, more specifically the aquatic ecosystem. While many environmental issues are uncovered as the result of exporting Nile Perch, environmental degradation and pollution are causes for greatest concern. Degradation of the ecosystem Lake Victoria was known as one of the greatest and largest lakes in Africa. Although after understanding the outcomes of the fishing industry, in Tanzania, such a title should be revoked. The lake had an abundant selection of fish calculating up to 400 species. The Byzantine Empire was also called Eastern Roman Empire, so this proves that it was a continuation of the Roman Empire, but they were speaking Greek, and did not forget about the Greek tradition. According to Browning, the physicians during the Byzantine Empire like Oreibasios, who was the Emperor Julian s physician and friend , use the scientific and old version of Greek medicine to treat patients, and this means that medical doctors did not forget about their Greek roots. Starting from Basil I, a Byzantine Emperor between 867 and 886, the Byzantine Empire entered its Golden Age, and according to Browning, Basil I established a very good Empire time that would last two centuries with his precious energy and rules. • 21. A Brief Description of the Concept of Courtly Love For a brief description of the concept of courtly love , a few characteristics must be highlighted. Courtly love appeared in Provence (southern France) in the eleventh century. It consists on the expression of love in its most sincere, chivalric and noble form. It tended to be chaste and adulterous. It was also secret and, in general, always took place between the members of the higher classes of society. Andreas Capellanus defines it in The Art of Courtly Love as the pure love which binds together the hearts of two lovers with every feeling of delight. This kind consists on the contemplation of the mind and the affection of the heart; it goes as far as the kiss and the embrace and the modest contact with the nude lover, omitting the final solace, for that is not permitted for those who wish to love purely. [...] That is called mixed love which gets its effect from every delight of the flesh and culminates in the final act of Venus (p.122). In Capellanus definition, it seems to me, that the previous elements mentioned are placed out of the game of love, as long as we consider courtly love to be expressed by the total submission of a young man towards his lady. The fulfilment of the souls in courtly love can rarely be obtained, because there is no equality in the relationship of the individuals. The lover s love is immanently pure, genuine in essence, but the beloved is usually characterized as unachievable because her self is so perfect that there is not much the lover can ... Also, the fact that Billie Holiday sang the song, was very important. Her voice, and way of making music sound, gives off the exact mood/tone that is felt by the idea of lynching. Lastly, the end of the song, the lyrics is one of the most important pieces. To refer to the whites/racists as crows, and let it be known they are scavengers was very iconic. • 26. Ineffective Argument in Jessica Statsky s Essay, Children... Jessica Statsky, in her essay, Children need to Play, Not Compete attempts to refute the common belief that organized sports are good for children. She sees organized sports not as healthy pass times for children, but as onerous tasks that children do not truly enjoy. She also notes that not only are organized sports not enjoyable for children, they may cause irreparable harm to the children, both emotionally and physically. In her thesis statement, Statsky states, When overzealous parents and coaches impose adult standards on children s sports, the result can be activities that are neither satisfying nor beneficial to children (627). Winning may not be the most important reason for playing a game, but children do not play to lose, either. They are elated when they win and either somber, angry or good humored when they lose, just as adults are. Statsky then makes another faulty assumption. She writes Winning and losing may be an inevitable part of adult life, but they should not be part of childhood (Statsky 629). This assumes that winning and losing are already not part of childhood. What child has ever gotten to full adulthood without ever knowing the disappointment of loss or the joy of winning? To assume that children are psychologically incapable of handling competition and the occasional inevitable loss is to severely underestimate children s abilities. Statsky also uses the all too common phenomenon of the overzealous parent or coach to support her thesis. She cites examples of parental brawls and coaches who rely on intimidation rather than good coaching to push their teams to victory (Statsky 629 30). Statsky seems to be saying that parents and coaches can behave in an obnoxious and even violent manner when they are part of organized sports for children, and that this behavior is yet another indication that organized sports are not suitable for children (629 30). • 29. Theme Of Bravery In IM Not Scared The film Life is Beautiful directed by Roberto Benigni and Niccolò Ammaniti s film I m not Scared explore the theme of bravery of their protagonists in their comparatively dissimilar settings. The 1997 Italian film Life is Beautiful follows the life of a charming man who uses his humor to win over the woman of his dreams and bravely save his family from the tragedy in Italy during the Second World War. Also set in the late 1970s in rural southern Italy, the film I m not Scared encompasses imprisonment and the developing friendship of Michele and Filippo who is kidnapped for ransom. Filippo is chained up and hungry when Michelle discovers him in a pit near an abandoned house and he helps the boy out. Bravery is prominently explored in both texts through dialogue, colour, and setting. Benigni and Ammaniti present bravery through the dialogue presented by the protagonists Guido and Michele. The dialogue that Guido speaks reveals plenty about his personality and nature and gives the audience a firm understanding of his character. The beginning of the film presents a lot of humor and the audience is introduced to a fairytale like story. Guido constantly uses his wit and comedic nature to impress his lover Dora, and often on their encounters he enthusiastically exclaims Buongiorno Princess! By referring to Dora as a princess illustrates that Guido believes she is perfect and seeing as he repeatedly says this phrase also conveys his ability to appear when least expected. Despite the transition in the film to a completely different setting and situation, dialogue plays a key role in communicating to the audience Guido s ability to lift the hopes and provide ongoing love and sacrifice for those around him. When Guido and son Joshua are separated from Dora at the concentration camp they shout Buongiorno Princess! into the microphone. A reaction shot is then used to show Dora s familiarity with these words and her understanding that her husband and son are alive. The use of this common greeting is effective in this film because it conveys that despite the sudden change of lifestyle for Guido and his family, Guido s personality ensures his humor and devotion are expressed until the very end of the film which shows ... This technique brought an emphasis of individual responsibility of an offender (Mair,2004). A criticism of this was the lack of attention of sociological factors that can influence criminal behaviour. First, the need to sentence individuals for the crime committed rather than sociological or behavioural issue that may have been a factor in the offender committing the crime. Secondly, under the concept of proportionality in which the sentence is proportionate to the crime. Human Dominion and Separation from Nature Other than Native American works, most of the works read for the class seemed to stem from or at least were influenced by some vein of Christian thinking. This can t be helped because the western world has been influenced by Christianity for centuries, and the foundational values still recognized in this country in particular are protestant, even if they re not blatantly proclaiming the faith. In fact, we even read through a few chapters of the Bible because the common theme and justification of human dominion over nature stems from the primary story of the Bible in Genesis. This theme is often a subject of great sadness or annoyance for nature writers like Wordsworth and Mary Oliver; while authors like John Muir and Bill McKibben, whom do profess to the Christian faith, still see nature as something spiritual because dominion means not just given authority, but also given the responsibility for its protection. The first chapter of Genesis establishes humanity s place in God s creation. For them the speaker stands out for apparently all wrong reasons and she is an outsider to them, in their midst she is an alien. So the speaker sits scratching throughout her lonely nights. It can be interpreted as she is scratching a desperate plea a message on a piece of paper. But if we infer the deeper meaning it can also mean that she is scratching because she is feeling uneasy, she is scratching over the scab of division and the label that she is a minority. She is scratching over the scab of people treating her minority over her skin colour. A page doesn t fight back , according to me this is the most powerful line in the whole poem. By page here she is referring to a minority person like herself. The speaker hopes that whatever she has spoken so far shoots through the thick layer of stereotypes the community has set and the noise of repression of the community. So whole carrying on with this life of hers, the speaker comes across a person who is stranger to her yet there is something about the person that makes her feel like she knows him or her. • 42. Sparta And Kallipolis An Analysis Of The Ideal Citizen Name: Safia Abdale Student number: 1001343539 Due: 4/11/2015 Word count: 1291 Writing Assignment 1: Sparta and Kallipolis an analysis of the ideal citizen Over the course of history there have been several attempts at defining what it means to be the ideal person, and by extension how to create an ideal society. In doing so, several characteristics are generally defined, some of which are courage, moderation and self control. The concept of courage has been fluid in its meaning but has been highly valued across ancient Greece. In this paper I will be observing two societies and the ideals that they hold for generating better people, as well as what values they would want to instil. One city is theoretical, and one real: Kallipolis, Socrates economic city, the city that would essentially be the opposite of Athens if it were established, and Sparta. Archidamus was a Spartan king who presided over a nation that prized military success and courage, specifically andreas, or manly courage, above all else. In the beginning of Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian war we find him trying to convince the Spartan war council not to wage war against Athens. Spartans were concerned for their reputation as Corcyrans had been mocking them and their apparent cowardice because of their inability to make quick decisions. King Archidamus argued that succumbing to the idea that war would be a good idea, and that Spartan victory was undoubtable was ignorant and would end up harming ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Comparison of US Bill of Rights and The Canadian Charter... BACKGROUND OF THE BILL OF RIGHTS The United States Bill of Rights came into being as a result of a promise made by the Fathers of Confederation to the states during the struggle for ratification of the Constitution in 1787 88. A great number of the states made as a condition for their ratification, the addition of amendments, which would guarantee citizens protection of their rights against the central government. Thus, we have a rather interesting situation in which the entrenchment of a bill of rights in the American Constitution was done by the virtual demand of the states, they themselves fearing a central government which was not legally constrained and restricted as far as its powers were concerned. The resulting Bill of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The entrenchment of rights in the Canadian Constitution comes after long experience with a system of parliamentary supremacy. The American judicial tradition of treating the written constitution as fundamental law cannot have an instant Canadian counterpart. Thus, it does not follow that the Canadian courts will necessarily claim a role comparable to that of courts in the United States, nor is it clear that the representative bodies in Canada would tolerate such a judicial assertion of power. Opposition by government bodies to the Charter have already occurred in Canada, where the Parti Quebecois government of Quebec invoked the notwithstanding the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms clause for the purpose of protecting their language laws from attack under the charter. This report will attempt to note some of the common and distinctive features of the text of the two constitutions as well as to how they differ. Three major classes of rights are protected by both the Canadian and United States constitutions. Freedom of expression, religion, and assembly are safeguarded in part I section 2 of the Canadian Constitution Act, 1982, and in the First Amendment of the American Constitution. The Legal Rights listed in sections 7 14 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, protecting criminal suspects and defendants by various procedural safeguards, are paralleled by American rights to have counsel against ... Honor as the Theme in Homer’s The Iliad Essay There are different forms and examples of exemplary and classic literature which have been deemed as significant works that are highly esteemed worldwide. These examples of literature would awe the world with how much literary skill they entailed when they were composed and written: attention to details as to formation of characters, the most crafty of plots, the most eloquent speeches and lines, the most astounding of twists of scenes, and most of all, the most universal and meaningful of themes. The theme of any literary work is what makes it great as it should be able to encompass the immense diversity of the world and as it would be able to transcend the boundaries of religion, age, race, gender, etc. Two examples of this great and ... Later on, as a shepherd, he encountered the three goddesses, Hera, Pallas Athene, and Aphrodite, and set the motion of what would be the war that extinguished the Trojan line Paris was to decide who is the most beautiful of the goddesses. Each goddess tried to bribe him with promises of power, riches, fame, and glory, but it was Aphrodite who succeeded in the end as she promised Paris that he can have the most beautiful mortal, Helen. This simple arrangement would then serve as the catalyst of a war that would kill thousands of Trojans and Greeks as soon it is revealed that Paris has stolen Helen and the gods and goddesses of Olympus have each taken sides on the war which would further complicate the lives of the people of Troy and Greece. Arguments Against School Uniforms District 230 should not mandate a school uniform policy because of the following: school uniforms go against our rights, raise questions of equality, and they rely on anti democratic principles. (EV)Robson states in his Viewpoint, ¨Symbols or words on clothes are most likely to clear the speech hurdle; they will then be evaluated against the disruption standard articulated by the Supreme Court in the watershed case Tinker vs. Des Moines Independent Community School District. Bans on saggy pants or Afro puffs are applied to all students but can be seen as racially biased. Outlawing sweat pants or frayed garments might well have a disproportionate effect, depending on a family s economic status, although this argument would be more persuasive to a school board making policy than to a court applying constitutional doctrine¨ (Robson). • 48. Internal And External Conflicts In The Time Of The Doves Mercè Rodoreda s immersive novel, The Time of the Doves, presents numerous realistic conflicts and their effects on an ordinary citizen. Natalia, the protagonist, is challenged with several internal and external conflicts that range from an inability to express herself to a war fueled famine. Rodoreda uses personal experience, as well as knowledge of the typical female role during the Spanish Civil War to add a personal outlook on the conflicts she presents. Natalia s internal conflicts are compelling, and can be applied to a large portion of women, in the past and today. As for the external conflict, Natalia s sufferings with the effects of war can be applied on a cultural level to most of Spain, during the Civil war, and universally to any war struck country. Throughout the novel Natalia is challenged with several internal conflicts, many of which originate from external conflict with her husband, Quimet. Natalia is a meek, mild, young woman in the beginning of the novel, It was hard for me to say no if someone asked me to do something (15). Quimet juxtaposes Natalia s personality in almost every way, he is obsessive, possessive, and controlling, ...and said if I wanted to be his wife I had to start liking everything he liked (22). Quimet persuades her to marry him and leave her fiancé, Pere. He often challenges Natalia s confidence and persuades her to do and agree to things she is uncomfortable with, creating internal conflicts for Natalia s inability to protest or decline. For instance, Natalia does not want Quimet to build the dovecote and raise the doves, but does not possess the adequate confidence to voice her opinion. Natalia is generally unable to convey her feelings of rage and discontent to the other characters, she often remarks on her difficulty to verbally express herself to the audience. Many factors of Natalia s life also create external conflict, most prominently the famine caused by the war, she struggles to keep her children fed and is plagued with guilt, I had two mouths to feed and nothing to put in them. I can t describe how sad it was (134). Natalia is eventually forced to make drastic decisions to try to spare her children, including sending her son, Antoni, to a children s ...
