Symbolism in The Lord of The Flies
It is impossible to read William Golding s novel, The Lord of the Flies, without noticing the
symbolism that was present. A symbol can be a person, place, or thing that represents something
more than its literal meaning (Telgen 15) From butterflies to actual characters, you could sense that
this book contained symbolism. Although Lord of the Flies appears on the surface to be a mere
story about children abandoned on an island, William Golding uses symbolism to convey a deeper
meaning.
This novel had many accounts of symbolism. It also captured the keen interest of their instructors
in debating the merits and defeats of different characters and the hunting down of literary sources
and deeper symbolic meanings in the story (Telgen 2). Most of the events, characters, and objects
