Diversity and Ecosystem Health: Protist Survival in Acidic Habitats
Abstract:
In this lab, we studied the health and response of a protist community in an
environmental change. The objective of this lab was to study and learn about how
variables, such as a more acidic environment, impact the community in a habitat.
Furthermore, it was also to learn about how diversity is quantified. To test this, we
added protist communities to habitats of different pH levels, from 7 to 4, and let
them live there for a week. We then studied the results and investigated which
protists lived better in which environments. We discovered that at a pH of 7, the
neutral pH of spring water, protists were able to live. As the pH was decreased,
however, protists began to die off and could not survive in such acidic conditions.
We also noticed that the lower the pH, the lower the diversity because fewer types
of protists could survive. We can use this information to see how acidic conditions
in nature such as those caused by acid rain can affect communities. We now know
that an acidic environment can be extremely harmful to a community and so we
should be more cautious of acid rain. If acidic conditions are bad for protists, it is
quite possible that they are unfavorable for humans as well.

Liberalism is a theory where the rule of law is based on principles of equality and
freedom. The first principles for this theory came from the classical liberalism while
the latter principles known are more obvious in social liberalism. The first liberals
embraced a wide range of practices depending on their point of views of these
philosophies, but in general, they supported ideas and behaviors such as freedom
of speech, of the press, of religion, civil rights, secular governments and democratic
societies. Of course this is very easy to understand and explain nowadays, after so
many authors have struggled to defined what liberalism really is and seeks. Using

paper will analyze the implication of rights for each theory and how they can be

life and their ignorance created a world worse than the blind man s.
Unknown to the prisoners in the cave an elevated causeway crosses through the

President James K. Polk, who believed the United States had a manifest destiny to

world. Through a semester abroad I hope to learn more about the world as well as
how CS is growing overseas. Father NicolГЎs addressed how technology has
increased the stresses access to information as fast as possible, over the quality of the
information.
Both through technology as my chosen field but also away from the world of zeros
and ones.
Although Father NicolГЎs is describing technology as the driving force behind the
globalization of superficiality, I want my experience abroad to increase how I use my
information to expand my depth of thought and imagination and use my computer
skills to help others do so too. Father NicolГЎs mentions a pedagogy of Ignatian
contemplation, how Ignatius asked us to look at all our senses when responding to a
new experience. I can employ this method to my new experiences while studying
abroad, in my studies toward my major and in exposure to another culture. Father
NicolГЎs is reminding us to stop and smell the roses when experiencing new things,
to take time to connect with others and our present surroundings. I fully intend
