WHAT I HAVE LEARNT
FROM MY AUDIENCE
FEEDBACK…
■ I asked some people ranging from 16 to 22 to analysis my products through a series of
questions. I aimed to ask people of my target audience (female teenagers) and people
who weren’t my target audience…
■ Here are the results…
QUESTION 1:WHAT GENREWOULDYOU
CATEGORISETHESETHREE PRODUCTS
AS?■ 100% of my audience answered that my products are within the genre of indie/alternative. This proves that
the mise en scene and dark colours of my products have been successful as being identified as
indie/alternative.
■ 75% of males said that my products classified as indie-pop. As males this would make sense as they would
view the pink colours as too ‘girly’ for their liking.
■ 50% of females said that the products came under the category as rock. This would be because of the dark
colours and the monochromatic mise en scene.
■ The other 50% of females got my genre spot on.They were able to identify the genre through the “use of
guitars” and “the post production animation”. These females were archetypes of who I was aiming my
products at.They came under my target audience’s demographics: artistic female students. This proves that
the semiotic signifiers within the texts work with the desired effects I aimed for (dark colours etc).
■ These answers show how the same products can create different meanings for different people. From this I
have learnt that the connotations of my texts have different meanings for other people depending on their
demographics.
QUESTION 2:WOULDYOU BUYTHESE
PRODUCTS?WHY?
■ All 100% said that they would buy the products all for the same reason. They found the
imagery attractive. This means that I was succeeded on the mise en scene of my products
with the contrast of the monochromatic tones against the pink aesthetics.
■ A third said that “there is a lot of attention to detail” as a positive. I think that this is
important because if I did not add detail to my products then they might have been seen as
boring.
■ Another third said that it “seems like the kind of music I listen to”.This comment
emphasises how important it is to get you're target audience right. It is so important that
producers aim for an audience that listen to the same type of music that they produce in
order to make successful sales. If I gave these products to someone who wasn’t in my
target demographic than they probably would have said no to willing to buy my products.
■ A third said that “the pink on the magazine stands out”.This links to the attraction
comments – if nothing in my products stood out than people would be reluctant to
consider buying them.
QUESTION 3: ISTHERE ANYTHINGYOU
PARTICULARLY LIKE ABOUTTHESE
PRODUCTS?
■ 100% of answers particularly liked different aspects of the products for different reasons.
■ 30% of people particularly liked the animatics of the video because it added style. Even though this
30% weren’t quite within my target audience demographic (with a third of them not being female),
they are still young and interested in vibrant and stylish things. The colour clearly attracted them in a
different way to which I intended it (which is okay because everyone interprets everything
differently).
■ 40% particularly liked the contrast of the monochromatic tones to the bright pink on the poster.
These comments proved that my contrast of colour has worked and has clearly complimented the
artist.
■ One third particularly liked the continuation of the smoke flare imagery. I'm glad that some people of
my target audience likes the smoke because when I was using this idea I was aware that not many
existing artists had used it. I was not challenging conventions I was just expanding the boundaries of
the conventions and my ideas have worked on at least on third of my audience.
QUESTION 4: DOTHEY ALL LINK WITH
EACHOTHER/CANYOUTELLTHESE
PRODUCTS GOTOGETHER AS ONE?
■ 100% of people said that they saw synergy throughout my products through the use of
imagery and two of them noticed synergy through the use of font styles. Imagery is the
most important thing that must have synergy due to the fact that it is the spine of the
advertisement.Without imagery products are very weak.
■ 50% saw synergy through font styles and colour. I managed to keep a contrast of
monochromatic colours and the pastol pink consistent throughout all three of my products.
■ 10% saw consistency through the “atmospheric trees”.This is a very artsy observation and
proves that my products are within an abstractive theme and are aesthetically pleasing
especially for young art students.
■ 80% recognised the imagery on the digipak and the poster from the music video. This
shows clear synergy throughout the three products.
QUESTION 5: WOULDYOU CHANGE
ANYTHING ABOUTTHE PRODUCTS? IF SO,
WHAT?
■ 80% of people mentioned adding more pink to the digipak. 100% of people mentioned
improvements for my digipak.
■ 20% mentioned that I should change the black background behind the CD as it does not go
with the rest of the imagery. It would make sense for me to add a more abstract
background behind the CDs to further stabilise the synergy.
■ 40% thought that some more pink could be added to the CD front cover. Having more pink
on the digipak would make the details included stand out more and the contrast of colours
would be more prominent.
■ 20% suggested adding the animatics to my ancillaries. This is a very good idea however
having the drawings on non moving images may take a sense of professionality away from
the products. This suggestion will be considered as it wouldn’t hurt to try.
