The document summarizes audience feedback from a music video, digipack, and magazine advert created for a school project. Most audience members correctly identified the music video's genre as pop, noting its fast pace, bold colors, and editing in sync with the beat. All audience members saw a consistent theme of paint across the tasks. They also understood the narrative message of a controlling relationship in the music video based on the characters' behaviors. However, feedback indicated that the video's locations and costumes lacked the flashiness expected in the pop genre.
1. 3. What have you
learned from your
audience feedback?
2. Introduction
For this post, I will be assessing the audience feedback given to my music
video, digipack, and magazine advert, analysing the negatives and positives. I
have accomplished this study through creating questions for my audience to
answer after viewing my music video and then looking through my ancillary
tasks. The audience I have decided to present my productions to range from
15-18 year olds with a mixture of genders and races.
7. Question 1: What genre do you think
this music video belonged to?
I asked this question as I wanted to see if the codes and conventions of the pop genre that I
have encoded within my music video, has been correctly conveyed and presented to the
audience.
A majority (11 out of 15 participants)of the audience managed to recognise that the genre
of the music video was pop. They understood this through the use of the non-diegetic
music as it had a fast pace and beat. They noticed that the the editing was also parallel with
the beat which emphasised the pop genre. The use of light lighting and the bold and bright
colours helped with their decision as they associated this with the genre.
The minority of the group (4 out of 15 participants) thought that the music video belonged
to the hip-hop or dance-pop. The reason being is that the characters within the music video
were all black which is related with the hip-hop genre, as a majority of the cast within the
music videos and artists are black. Since there are segments within the song that do not
contain lyrics and contain very fast paced beats, the minority thought that the song was
from the dance-pop, as songs from that genre do not include a lot a lyrics and focuses
more on the music.
8. Question 2: Is there a consistent theme
within all the tasks?
I decided to ask this question as I wanted to see if my music video and
ancillary tasks have a clear continuity within them that connects them
together, as they should be.
Overall, the audience had seen a obvious theme/aspect with all my tasks, this
being the colours and paint. In the music video they noticed that the paint
played a strong role within the music video as it was shown many times
throughout. They also saw that the element had been carried to the ancillary
tasks through the bright colours incorporated on the front, back and CD of
the digipack and well as the explosion of colour on the magazine advert.
9. Question 3: Did you notice any messages
within the narrative of the music video?
I came up with this question as the music video is mainly narrative led and plays a strong
role conveying the message. I asked this question to see if the audience were able to
denote the message in the narrative.
The audience understood the message of a controlled relationship and domestic violence,
within the narrative. They saw this through the behaviour and performance of the two
characters. The female lead was very assertive and dominant (through her hand gestures
and body language) towards the male lead who, at the beginning and middle, was
submissive but at the end broke from the relationship (through him pushing her away).
They also stated that they saw through the cinematography, how the characters were being
portrayed. Close ups and high angles were used for the male lead to show how emotional
and vulnerable. Low angles and long shots were used for the female lead to encode her
power and strong presence.
10. Question 4: What features of the
ancillary tasks stand out to you?
Asking this question would give me a better insight to what is the best selling
point of my digipack and magazine advert, as well as if it has attracted my target
audience correctly.
Many of the participants (8 out of 15 participants) stated that the bursts of bright
colours of paint, was the first aspect of the tasks that drew their attention. The
vibrant nature gave off a positive feeling which they felt attracted to.
Some (5 out of 15 participants) preferred the white and black font in the style of a
paint brush as the stand out factor. The bold contrast of the white and black
colours against the multi-coloured backgrounds caught their attention first.
Others (2 out of 15 participants) did not see any features that stood out to them
as they felt that all of the tasks were too similar and overly flashy. There were not
any specific elements of each task that differentiated them as they all contained
the same aspects such as the brushes and the colours.
11. Question 5: Is there anything about the music
video that could fit more into the pop genre?
I asked this question to see any improvements that can be added to my music
video that can make it appear more within the pop genre, to attract a larger
audience.
All of the participants responded that the mise en scene was lacking in the codes
and conventions of the pop genre. They stated that a lot of the locations were
boring as they were all mainly in a house and a small office. The costumes were
basic black and white and did not stand out. The lighting, although sometimes
light, was mainly natural which seemed dull. The only aspect of the mise en scene
that was closely linked to pop was the different colours of paint used. Over all, the
participants found that the mise en scene was dreary, colourless, and mediocre.
12. Reflection
In conclusion, I have learnt through the investigation that I have, to an extent,
accomplished in attracting my target audience with my music video and
ancillary tasks, as well as meeting the codes and conventions of the pop
genre that is expected from the audience. There were positive responses
concerning the editing as it was greatly corresponding with the fast paced
music. A large negative from the participants was of the locations since they
did not fit the conventions of the pop genre, which usually big and flashy.
