The nervous system gathers information from inside and outside the body to monitor changes and determine if action is needed. It is classified as the central nervous system, comprising the brain and spinal cord, or the peripheral nervous system outside the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system contains the somatic nervous system and automatic nervous system, the latter consisting of the sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric nervous systems which activate muscles/glands through one or two neurons.
