We teach in 2016 so why do many of our classrooms look like they’re from the 1950s? Concepts from engineering can help to modernize our teaching methods and classroom style. This presentation covers tools for improving technology integration, collaboration, creativity, inquiry, justification for answers, writing for reflection, problem solving, hands-on learning, the role of the teacher as a facilitator, and transparent assessment.

In order to maintain a legacy of innovation, Mountain Heights Academy developed a professional development program for teachers called The OER Passport. The OER Passport course trains teachers and students on OER use, reuse, licensing, creation, and sharing by completing the following tasks. The first three tasks lay a solid foundation and provide teachers with the tools to complete the last three tasks which focus on the use, reuse, production, and innovative teaching practices.

The communication revolution (thanks Internet) means we can both give and display badges on a grander scale than ever before. This creates unique opportunities from a global perspective. Leaders, instructors and others can award recognition via digital badges regardless of their location. For example, if you were looking to create an organization devoted to bringing inclusion to schools all over the world and wanted to grant credit and/or recognize achievements, digital badges and its borderless distribution and collection system is the answer.
My school is currently in a beta test stage for using badges with students and we would like to share our experiences so far. This workshop will cover some of the ins and outs of using badges in and outside of the classroom.

In preparation for these expectations becoming policy in 2015, we hired graduate interns to review every taught module (over 3000) and create reports about how well they meet the expectations.
During this session we will explain how the minimum expectations were developed. We will describe the review process, highlighting challenges faced and providing recommendations for others. We will share some high level findings of the reviews and example anonymised reports at different levels (e.g module, departmental, faculty). Finally we will explain how we are using the reviews to inform staff development and the feedback we have gotten on the reviews so far.

As colleges increase their online course offerings, so does the need to train faculty to transition to the online format. Also, with a number of these online courses being taught by adjuncts who work full time or teach elsewhere, perhaps the biggest challenge is finding the time to complete the training. How do we cover the points they need to know in the little time they have? And how do we make the training relevant or meaningful to those who have had previous training elsewhere?
At American International College, we sought to address these challenges by using a competency-based badge system to support our training program for faculty teaching online. Faculty complete tasks to demonstrate their mastery of Blackboard skills, online pedagogy and AIC policies and procedures, with each set of tasks leading to a badge. Faculty who already have experience in these areas can demonstrate their competencies in alternate methods to earn their badges. This presentation will provide an overview of AIC’s redeveloped training program for faculty teaching online. We will address considerations of structure and implementation, as well as the benefits for full- and part-time faculty.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
