WAVE POWER
• Wave power is power drawn from waves, captured and
converted into useful energy. The more stronger the waves,
the more it is capable to produce power.
• When wind blows across the sea surface, it transfers the
energy to the waves. Wave energy conversion is done with
the aid of WAVE ENERGY CONVERTERS. The captured
energy can then be used for electricity generation,
powering plants or pumping of water.

HOW WAVES FORM ?
• Differential warming of the earth causes pressure differences in the
atmosphere, which generate winds. As winds move across the surface
of water, they transfer some of their energy to the water and create
waves.
• A few factors that determine the strength of waves are:
Speed of wind: faster the wind, bigger is the wave.
Time of wind: longer the wind travels, larger the wave.
Distance of wind: farther the wind travels against the wave, bigger it
will be.

HISTORY
• The first known patent to use energy from ocean waves dates back to
1799 and was filed in Paris by Girard and his son.
• Modern scientific pursuit of wave energy was pioneered by Yoshio
Masuda's experiments in the 1940s.
• A renewed interest in wave energy was motivated by the Oil Crisis in
1973.
• In the 1980s, a few first-generation prototypes were tested at sea.
• In 2008, the first experimental wave farm was opened in Portugal.
November 2, 2017 514126025
ADVANTAGES OF WAVE ENERGY
• Renewable: The best thing about wave energy is that it will never run
out. Unlike fossil fuels, which are running out. The waves flow back
from the shore, but they always return.
• Environment friendly: No harmful byproducts such as gas, waste and
pollution.
• The energy is free - no fuel needed, no waste produced.
• Can produce a great deal of energy.
• It is a reliable source.
November 2, 2017 614126025
WAVE ENERGY CONVERTERS
• Wave Profile Devices (WPD): They turn the oscillating height of the
oceans surface into mechanical energy.
• Oscillating Water Columns (OWC): They convert the energy of the
waves into air pressure.
• Wave Capture Devices (WCD): They convert the energy of the waves
into potential energy.
November 2, 2017 714126025
WPD - POINT ABSORBERS
• The rise and fall of the wave height at
a single point caused by passing of
waves, is used to drive hydraulic or
electromechanical energy converters
to generate power.
• This mechanical energy drives an
electrical generator. The electrical
energy is fed down a single umbilical
cable to a junction on the sea bed. An
individual point absorber produce up
to 11 MW of electricity.
November 2, 2017 814126025
November 2, 2017 914126025
WPD - ATTENUATORS
• As the waves pass along the length of
the device, it causes the long
cylindrical body to sag downwards into
the troughs of the waves and arch
upwards when the waves crest is
passing.
• The segments flex at hinged joints as a
wave passes along the device. The
mechanical motion of the flexing is
converted to electrical energy using
hydraulic motors and generators. An
attenuator produce up to 1 MW of
electricity.

OSCILLATING WATER COLUMN
• The oscillating water column, is a
popular shoreline wave energy
device normally positioned onto
or near to rocks or cliffs which are
next to a deep sea bottom.
• They consist of a partly
submerged hollow chamber fixed
directly at the shoreline which
converts wave energy into air
pressure.
November 2, 2017 1314126025
OWC WORKING
• As the incident waves
enter and exit the
chamber, changes in
wave movement on the
opening cause the water
level within the
enclosure to oscillate up
and down acting like a
giant piston on the air
above the surface of the
water, pushing it back
and forth.
November 2, 2017 1414126025
OWC WORKING
• The wave motion inside the
chamber alternately compresses
and decompresses the air.
• As a result, an alternating stream
of high-velocity air is generated.
This airflow is driven through a
duct to a turbine generator that
is used to generate electricity.
• The energy generating capacity
of a single terminator device can
be up to 1.5 MW.
November 2, 2017 1514126025
WAVE CAPTURE DEVICE
November 2, 2017 16
• A wave capture device also known as a overtopping wave power
device, that captures the movements of the waves and converts
it into potential energy. Wave energy is converted into potential
energy by lifting the water up onto a higher level.
14126025
• As the waves hit the structure they flow up a ramp and over the top
into a raised water impoundment reservoir on the device in order to fill
it.
• Once captured, the potential energy of the trapped water in the
reservoir is extracted using gravity as the water returns to the sea via
turbine generator located at the bottom of the wave capture device.

WAVE POWER IN INDIA
• India has a long coastline with the estuaries and gulfs. The identified
economic wave power potential in India is of the order of 8000-9000
MW with about 7000 MW in the Gulf Of Cambay and 1200 MW in the
Gulf Of Kachchh.
• Government Of India, Ministry Of New And Renewable Energy steps up
its effort to reach the objectives to contemplate its renewable energy
objectives by 2022.
• The country's first wave power generation project is coming up at
Durgaduani creek of the Sundarbans. The 3.75 MW capacity
Durgaduani creek wave energy project is a technology demonstration
project and will span over an area of 4.5 km.
November 2, 201714126025 18
ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
• The installation of the equipment can destroy habitats and coral of sea
life.
• It can kill water plants vital for the food chain and ecosystem.
• The placement of the machine is important because it can prevent the
fishing boats from going out to sea, so some species of fish could grow
to very large numbers.
BUT…… The devices can become almost like artificial reefs, creating a
place for new colonisation and most wave power plants are spread out
along the coastline, preventing erosion to cliffs.
November 2, 201714126025 19
CONCLUSION
• No land requirement.
• Runs on low operation cost.
• Produce electricity 24 h per day.
• Wave power is fairly new and will be used a lot in the future and will
help towards lowering CO2 emissions.
• Abundant and widely available.

  • 13. OSCILLATING WATER COLUMN • The oscillating water column, is a popular shoreline wave energy device normally positioned onto or near to rocks or cliffs which are next to a deep sea bottom. • They consist of a partly submerged hollow chamber fixed directly at the shoreline which converts wave energy into air pressure. • 14. OWC WORKING • As the incident waves enter and exit the chamber, changes in wave movement on the opening cause the water level within the enclosure to oscillate up and down acting like a giant piston on the air above the surface of the water, pushing it back and forth. • 15. OWC WORKING • The wave motion inside the chamber alternately compresses and decompresses the air. • As a result, an alternating stream of high-velocity air is generated. This airflow is driven through a duct to a turbine generator that is used to generate electricity. • The energy generating capacity of a single terminator device can be up to 1.5 MW. • 16. WAVE CAPTURE DEVICE November 2, 2017 16 • A wave capture device also known as a overtopping wave power device, that captures the movements of the waves and converts it into potential energy. Wave energy is converted into potential energy by lifting the water up onto a higher level. 14126025
  • 17. • As the waves hit the structure they flow up a ramp and over the top into a raised water impoundment reservoir on the device in order to fill it. • Once captured, the potential energy of the trapped water in the reservoir is extracted using gravity as the water returns to the sea via turbine generator located at the bottom of the wave capture device. • 18. WAVE POWER IN INDIA • India has a long coastline with the estuaries and gulfs. The identified economic wave power potential in India is of the order of 8000-9000 MW with about 7000 MW in the Gulf Of Cambay and 1200 MW in the Gulf Of Kachchh. • Government Of India, Ministry Of New And Renewable Energy steps up its effort to reach the objectives to contemplate its renewable energy objectives by 2022. • The country's first wave power generation project is coming up at Durgaduani creek of the Sundarbans. The 3.75 MW capacity Durgaduani creek wave energy project is a technology demonstration project and will span over an area of 4.5 km. November 2, 201714126025 18
  • 19. ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES • The installation of the equipment can destroy habitats and coral of sea life. • It can kill water plants vital for the food chain and ecosystem. • The placement of the machine is important because it can prevent the fishing boats from going out to sea, so some species of fish could grow to very large numbers. BUT…… The devices can become almost like artificial reefs, creating a place for new colonisation and most wave power plants are spread out along the coastline, preventing erosion to cliffs.
