Question 7
1. Looking back at your preliminary
task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to
the full product?
By Brandon Joseph-Fulgence
2. Research and Planning
• Research and Planning benefitted me from
when I did my preliminary task, I only looked
at one magazine to help my production. I took
into consideration the layout of the products
and mixed a vast amount of techniques
including photography, audience feedback and
social groups represented.

• I looked at other aspects
too such as how the photos
are laid out and the Mise-en
scene of them such as
props, costumes and
positioning. I also got an
insight into how various
magazines of a similar genre
to mine are set out. Instead
of looking at one magazine,
I looked at variety which
increased my knowledge of
what types of aspects
should be included in my
products.
• Another key factor from the
preliminary task that I
learned from these mistakes
by recording audience
feedback on my products.
This enabled me to see how
they would react to my
product which outlines the
advantages and
disadvantages. I also
outlined my production
process and explained in
detail what I was doing with
my products.
4. Time Management
• I think that I managed my time a lot more efficiently for my main task than
my preliminary task. This was mainly because for my main task I had more
things to think about due to adhering to my target audience.
• I had to think about much more elements to think about for example, the
shot I was going to use, color scheme, props, lighting, composition of my
model and the genre of my magazine.
• Time management for my preliminary task was a minor problem. The
models intended to be used for my photo shoots originally were unable to
fulfill this as our free time in and outside college differed greatly. I
overcame this by rearranging my models who were free when I was which
allowed me to carry on with the production of my products.
• For the production of my coursework, I made sure beforehand the models
I assigned could fulfill my requests which made my time management
easier.
7. Construction
• My finals products in comparison to my preliminary
products are much more in detailed in terms of layout and
pictures. Looking at the fonts I used for my preliminary
task, they seem really basic and plain which made the
whole product unprofessional. However, on my final
product I used fonts which met my conventions of my
magazine, I also researched into fonts to use. I created a
detailed analysis outlining the strengths and weaknesses of
specific fonts which I felt represented the forms and
conventions. I took inspirations from XXL and Vibe when
researching fonts for my own magazine I did this to help
make my magazine fit the forms and conventions of these
professional magazines as my magazine intends to have a
similar target audience.

• For my front cover, I felt that the photography
for my music magazine was much more
prepared and organized as I used the three
point lighting set up which was missing when
producing the photography for my preliminary
task. The professionalism for my magazine
was important as I planned the shots both
effectively and efficiently by taking positioning
and lighting into account whereas in
preliminary task I didn’t.
9. Continued again…
• The layout of my final products in comparison to my
prelim products differ greatly. The layout of my final
products were based around the photography,
especially for the front cover as I positioned the mast
head, sell lines and other features bad on the
positioning of the image.
• When looking at the colors I used for my final products,
in comparison to the preliminary task they differ
because I took into account that the colors I used was
relevant to my audience which made the product
appear more organised and professional to the
audience.
